Introducing the Formica® 2022 SurfaceSet® Collection

Inspired by nature and the beauty of handcrafted processes, the SurfaceSet® 2022 Collection marks a new era of commercial design. Design Story:
Design Story:
1.Birchbark
2.Paperfold
The natural world gives us an endless selection of beautiful visuals to inspire us in our daily lives and enable us to craft biophilic designs that provide a sense of comfort and renewal. The new Birchbark Formica® Laminate pattern was created through the ultimate creative process: taking a walk in nature.
A counterpoint to today’s digital world, paper is an everyday surface that takes us back to childhood delights: We’ve all crumpled paper and flattened it back out to see what magic might emerge.
In fact, nature is a key element of the Safe Haven theme, one of the driving design forces behind the Formica® High Pressure Laminate (HPL) SurfaceSet® 2022 commercial introduction. This innovative collection includes a panoply of surfaces that offer the reassurance of nature, allowing us to feel safe in uncertain times.
Introducing the Formica® DecoMetal® 2022 Collection The 2022 DecoMetal® Laminates Collection includes seven trend-worthy metal options for elevating commercial spaces. This introduction by Formica Corporation enhances the existing collection with more painted solid metals as well as woven textured and hand-rubbed metals in warm light tones, brass, copper and black. As the luxe trend with a nod to Art Deco styling continues in hospitality, retail and other elegant interiors, these new additions expand the options of metal surfacing.
View the Gallery at formica.com/DM2022
In creating the Paperfold series, hand-crumpled paper became the original manuscript for the design, adding wonderful authenticity by marrying two laminate making processes: Formica® solid colour décor papers and printing. This innovative series embodies the New Order trend of focusing on simple, recognizable materials like paper making within the Formica® High Pressure Laminate (HPL) SurfaceSet® 2022 collection.

EX ÆQUO
REVAMPING A DISTRICT Located in the new D’Estimauville eco-district of Quebec City, the new CNESST headquarters is the centerpiece of the industrial sector’s revitalization strategy, contributing to the makeover of Avenue D’Estimauville and Boulevard Sainte-Anne.
36 | INTÉRIEURS 87
Grandiose, impressive, dizzying in some ways, the space unfolds around an eight-storey atrium that leaves no one indifferent.
COUNTERING THE SILO EFFECT Made of wood and glass, this majestic atrium ensures omnipresent visual contact with the outside and a decompartmentalization of administrative offices, countering the silo effect. Here, the variety of spaces offered to employees revolves around a palette of soft colors, soft surfaces and wood. A WINTER GARDEN A generous Winter Garden democratizing the most privileged space of the building, the CNESST head office’s atrium, is intended to be a place of gathering and rejuvenation of the highest quality. Brilliant! LONG LIVE THE INTERACTION Acting as an obligatory passage, enter the wonderful winter garden! It provokes positive meetings and fruitful exchanges between employees, thus fostering the feeling of belonging to a great team and the pride of working for an organization whose primary mission is the health of people at work. EQUITY & AVANT-GARDE Here, all the institutional offices are laid out in such a way as to limit closed offices and democratize natural light. The open areas are found on the periphery of the floors and the closed offices are concentrated in the center of each of them. The client also wanted to integrate spaces reserved for management and the board of directors. A large round table combined with the huge windows offers a panoramic view of Île d’Orléans and the splendid city of Quebec.
38 | INTÉRIEURS 87
Like a painting by a grand master, the facade featuring aluminum produced in Quebec stands in all elegance.
ALUMINUM ART BEFORE THE ATRIUM In this promising project that redefines an unloved district of the national capital, the facades are treated with elegance. Aluminum, a material produced in Quebec, is used as the exterior cladding. These facades integrate the interior side, since the visible atrium ensures contact with the exterior, creating a bright and energizing space for all employees. THE EVENING SHOW In the evening, this illuminated facade rises to the dimensions of a work of art. In addition to wood and wood veneer, the finishes used in this Arte project offer a warm and luminous corporate atmosphere, in a minimalist style that blends harmoniously with the subtle integration of the client’s corporate colors of green. THE GREEN AXIS OF THE ECO-DISTRICT It should be noted that the layout proposed by the consortium of architects for this institutional client promotes generous interaction with the green axis which structures the eco-district. Thanks to the entrance forecourt and the employee terrace, the green axis is widened to create an additional public space. IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK Let’s admire this triangular wooden structure for a moment. Warm and welcoming, this innovative use of wood demonstrates the CNESST’s commitment to sustainable development and occupational health, supported by initiatives to obtain LEED and WELL certifications.
STAIRS TO DANCE OFF OF The stairs make you want to break out in dance. The elegant finish of the ramps and its satin gray is reassuring. They lead to benevolent spaces with astonishing perspectives and possibilities for warm contacts. GREEN TODAY, GREEN TOMORROW The atrium exposes a warm wood structure and contributes to providing the ecological character sought both for the building and the neighborhood. A GRAND MODEL TO FOLLOW This project by the Coarchitecture and LEMAYMICHAUD consortium is a very large-scale example that will have to be repeated in order to continue to beautify neighborhoods such as this one in Quebec City and to enrich the quality of life at work for talents devoted to their professions.
JURY’S KUDO « This massive project is a strong statement of alternative solutions and sustainability principles with applied innovation to the community it serves. Not to mention, the atrium and staircases are spectacular! »

EX ÆQUO
Social Housing Extraordinaire!
The basis of this new social housing residential building, set in Cornellà de Llobregat in Barcelona, Spain, are a matrix of communicating rooms that eliminates corridors and guarantee optimum use of the floor plan. 85/5/4 Designed by the creative tandem Marta Peris and Jose Toral of PERIS+TORAL ARQUITECTES, the project consists of 85 social housing units laid out on five levels and divided in four group corners. BASQUE COUNTRY TIMBER To enable the industrialization of elements, improved quality of construction and a major reduction of deadlines and C02 emissions, a total of 8,300 m2 of zero kilometer timber from the Basque Country was used and brought to the 10,000 m2 surface area. A FOUR-WAY COURTYARD The building is organized around a courtyard that articulates a sequence of intermediate spaces. On the ground floor, a porch opens up upon the city. Creating a doorway to the building and filtering the relationship between public space and the courtyard, it acts as a small plaza for the community. Instead of entering directly and independently from the outer façade to each lobby of the building, four vertical communication shafts located at all four corners of the courtyard invite occupants to converge and meet in the plaza, this safe space from a gender perspective. A RING OF OUTDOOR SPACES Access to each and every unit goes through one of the four stairways while private terraces that make up the ring of outdoor spaces overlook the most welcoming courtyard.

The 85 housing units are divided into four groups and laid out on five floors, with a total of 18 units per floor.
A MATRIX OF COMMUNICATING SPACES The building’s general floor plan is a matrix of communicating rooms. There are no less than 114 spaces per floor, for a total of 543 interconnected spaces in the building, all of similar dimensions, eliminating both private and community corridors to make the maximum use of the floor space. Common and service areas are laid out in the central ring, while the rest of the rooms, of undifferentiated use and size, are set up along the complex’s façade and accommodate different forms of occupation. The rooms’ surface area of 13 sq. meters and generous proportions allow widespaced corners to facilitate the occupants’ appropriation of space. AN OUTER-RING TERRACE Another terrace in the outer ring completes the spatial sequence. A symmetric row of spaces are thus interconnected by large openings and permeable to fresh air, outside gaze and city movement.
JURY’S KUDO « Crisp, clean, innovative and refreshingly well organized! A special nod to the project’s adaptability to social housing and wonderful use of mass timber elements that speak to acknowledge sustainability issues.»
HOME SWEET HOME Of the 85 units, some are laid out around the communication shafts, ensuring that each space is cross-ventilated and faces two directions. Each apartment consists of five or six modules, depending on whether they host two or three bedrooms. The apartments’ inclusive open-plan kitchen is located in the central room, acting as a space to come together while replacing corridors and making domestic work visible and counter-perceiving traditional gender roles. WOOD WORK The rooms’ size offers flexibility based on ambiguity of use and functional indeterminacy and ensures an optimal setting for the wooden architectural elements of the structure. In order to achieve the economic viability required in such a social housing project, the volume of wood required per square meter of construction was optimized, representing 0.24 m3 per square meter of built surface area. Bravo!

A State-of-the-Art Skating Rink
Sitting on the site of the former Gaétan Boucher outdoor ice rink and annexed to Sainte-Foy’s Sports Center, Québec City’s state-of-the-art skating sports installation required a sensitive approach that would promote community appropriation and user comfort.
A VERY FIRST OF ITS GENRE Designed by Lemay & Ardoises Architecture, the project contains Québec’s very first fully covered 400-meter ice rink as well as two Olympic skating rinks surrounded by a three-lane-wide and 465-meter-long athletics track. FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION Sober and assumed, the exterior refers to the country’s nordicity and the ice’s reflection. The volume rises to reveal 360-degree window paneling allowing users to constantly be connected with the outside world and elements. Although form follows function, it also follows the site’s topography. Imposing, its shell’s scale echoes that of the nearby highway, seen through the site’s preserved embankments. ON A HUMAN SCALE Inside, the rink incorporates a towering multimedia strip which conceals the building’s inner mechanics while lifting the bleachers. Covered in wood, this gesture contributes to bringing the project back to a human scale and directing the gaze outwards. The spaces are delicately detailed. HIGH-SPEED SKATING Sober and assumed, the building’s envelope transposes the richness of the inner movement while exuding a skater’s dynamism, balance and speed.

Built in a clearing in Saint-Donat, Québec, this bright cottage is a reminder that home design goes far beyond aesthetics. It holds an exceptional opportunity to create spaces inspired by their occupants, their pasts and their personalities.
CHILDHOOD ORCHARD & BOREAL FOREST Inspired by the dense boreal forest that shrouds the flat terrain as well as by the client's nostalgia for the orchard of his childhood, ACDF Architecture designed a home centered around a solitary apple tree standing proudly in the middle of a modest courtyard. BLACK LIMITS & BRIGHT LIGHT The volumetric concept of the country house revolves around three components. Two horizontal planes, clad in black aluminum panels, define the horizontal limits of the structure. In the center of it all, an opening allows an apple tree to grow strongly and frames the views towards the sky and the treetops while letting light penetrate the heart of the house from dawn to dusk. 1-2-3 GO! Three wooden volumes were inserted between the horizontal planes. One of the boxes hosts the children's bedrooms and bathroom, while the second box houses the garage and utility spaces. The third box frames the master suite, consisting of a bedroom, private living room, and bathroom. A HAPPY ENDING Obviously, all the rooms maintain strong visual connections with the outdoor natural setting as well as with the interior spaces of the house, visible from the open central courtyard where this solitary apple tree stands tall.

Stroke of Genius
It took three years to finalize the University of Montreal’s MIL Campus Sciences Complex. It is the largest Canadian university project. A feat of architectural excellence. SHAPING INTERACTIONS Designed by the consortium Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architectes_Lemay_NFOE Architectes, this major project required a bold architectural response to create a place of synergy that supports innovation. Thus, the design of the interior spaces borrows an architectural language which integrates openness, amplitude and transparency and shapes a place conducive to exchanges and interconnection. MOUNT ROYAL TRIBUTE Paying tribute to the UDM, the project echoes its emblematic nearby mountains. A piece of Mount Royal is thus housed and unfolds in the form of an interior garden, located in the heart of the campus and surrounded by its library, in which mountain species of trees were planted. AVANT-GARDE The MIL campus is one of the most avant-garde university sites in North America, both for its ultramodern Science Complex and for its eco-responsible character. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Many strategies were incorporated including LED lighting, zoning of spaces to allow for air recovery, envelope performance maximized through lab and in situ (UL) testing, 53% reduction in energy consumption compared to a reference building, as well as the use of FSC-certified wood and materials with recycled content. Here is an eco-responsible and innovative design, made with grace and nobility.

A Never-Ending Scenery
In the heart of the Québécois forest, the Maison du cap floats and delicately overlooks the wilderness. Designed like an island on an island, the house is organized around a huge wooden terrace which opens onto the luscious nature surrounding it. IMAGINATIVE Rectangular in plan, the house offers unusual proportions in elevation contrasting nicely with the slender verticality of the neighboring trees. The traditional doublesloped roof is revisited in a way that inverts its proportions. To this end, the owners like to repeat that the amazed shape obtained reminds them of the nearby mountain they are most fond of. INGENIOUS Due to the high altitude and its four-sided exposure, the grounds of the house are constantly swept by strong winds. Atelier Pierre Thibault imagined semipermeable walls of openwork lattices to protect the many terraces without hindering the visual breakthroughs and the supply of light, while echoing the tight rhythm of the surrounding tree trunks.
ECONOMIC Here, the interior spaces benefit from generous windows without the thermal efficiency of the house being compromised. HARMONIOUS In this simple yet daring project, the surrounding forest and the architecture work of art become one. The selection of the exterior cladding is a good illustration of this voluntary sobriety. Covered entirely in wood, the house blends poetically into the landscape like a shadow that has delicately slipped through the trees.

Marvelously Made in Montreal
Montauk Sofa’s brand new flagship store located on Saint-Laurent Boulevard — this iconic cultural corridor affectionately called Montreal’s Main — represents a pleasant and unconventional environment, just like the unique and pleasant creations of the Montreal luxury furniture brand.
AT THE HEART OF THE COMPETITION The space needed to showcase an elegant environment in order to present the Montreal-made highend furniture. The solution? Open and well-lit exhibition halls laid out on four floors and easy and continuous circulation through the multi-leveled exhibition spaces.
AND THEN, THERE WAS LIGHT The rear space’s backlighting adds a touch of privacy to a space that could otherwise be colder. On the ground floor, as well as on the upper floors, the skillful play of the ceiling energizes the space without competing with the primary objective, that of showcasing the furniture of the prestigious brand.
INSPIRED Cohlmeyer Architecture splits the existing building in order to provide a green space between the original facade and the new facade of the exhibition space. An oasis of greenery welcomes visitors in while allowing maximum natural light to enter the interior spaces.
LITTLE EXTRAS A hidden stainless steel water wall separates the elevation from the facade and is uncovered by following the water runoff. Here, each exhibition floor, including the basement, hollowed out to provide the desired ceiling height, offers views of the green garden. Marvelous!

The Vibrancy of Two Volumes
The building that houses creative agency lg2’s new head offices surprises and impresses with its two interlocking volumes, enriching, in turn, the architectural, natural and landscape heritage that surrounds it.
TWO VOLUMES The first volume, with its black, rich and glossy materiality, reflects the surrounding components, amplifying the public space and providing an interaction between the building and the movement of passers-by.
runs a monumental staircase with the air of bleachers which creates a strong link and identity. As for the flexible and airy interior layouts, they adapt brilliantly to the new reality of hybrid work in unassigned positions.
The second volume, with its textured materiality and deep, warm charcoal color, blends harmoniously with the glossy appearance. The installation of the masonry modules vertically brings, here, a contemporary and audacious touch to the building.
HEAVEN FOR ALL The roof terrace, accessible from the cafeteria on the third level, is a truly elevated landscaped space that offers unique views of the city.
VIBRANCY THROUGH THE WINDOW The glass-windowed main entrance reveals the interior like a showcase. Inside, a skylight naturally illuminates the heart of the agency. Under the latter,
A GLANCE TO THE PAST Beyond a place of work, the offices designed by Provencher_Roy are intended to be a living environment where the agency’s talents feel happy and at home, where they experience pleasure in the wake of the industrial past of the famous Angus workshops.

Morning Has Broken…
The Aurora Lodge sits on over 200,000 square meters of private and protected land. Facing west, the house was built in the distant and sumptuous Norwegian Alps of Lyngen.
TOTAL INTIMACY The orientation and design of the lodge allowed for absolute privacy, with the rising sun only entering the lodge after 10 a.m. The house faces the shore and hosts a private sauna on the other side of the cove, discreetly positioned for intimacy, while enjoying spectacular views of the ocean that unfolds before.
WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM FRIENDS Combined with the limited logistical means and the desire to create a minimal footprint and a carbon-neutral project, this is a hybrid prefabrication of the Polar Life Haus factory in Finland. Traditional features such as a breathable building envelope have been developed whilst ensuring an amply insulated living space.
IN PEACE WITH NATURE Here, respect and harmony with nature were vital. Thus, the main building extends over the natural plateau, just behind a single row of trees. High ceilings and glass walls invite the sky and the landscape into the lodge seamlessly.
ACCOUNTABILITY Snorre Stinessen Architecture insists: The concrete used for the lodge floors is locally sourced. Being in the Arctic North, it goes without saying that the building is, of course, extremely well insulated. Here, all the constructions are based on the principles of the natural breathing of materials, like a traditional log building.

CITIZENS COMMITTED & IN CONTROL Hometown to pioneer rock and roll figure Buddy Holly and known as the original live music capital of the country, the city had lost its heart after two 1970 tornadoes destroyed the downtown core. The city’s performance venue was left in disrepair. Enter a group of citizens wanting to reinvigorate the city’s cultural dynamics and architecture team Diamond Schmitt, Parkhill, MWM Architects. REFLECTING THE STATE’S HERITAGE The design draws influences from West Texas’ landscape. Horizontal striations running along the building’s envelope reflect the prismatic and layered rock formations of the state’s canyons. As per the building’s colors, they echo the desert plains, soil and sky, while its shapes and angles are abstractions of arroyos and other landforms. THE SILVER LINING Targeting a LEED Silver certification, the building’s façade applies various shading approaches to counter the region’s extreme temperature fluctuations. A long overhang, angled concrete fins, and deep-set ribbon windows act as architectural drapery to cool the building and filter light without obstructing the vistas surrounding the Hall.

NAUTICA, SEAGULLS & SEAPLANES The residential tower’s south and west facade sunshades are iconic, giving both practicality and a unique identity to the building. The origami-like solid plate steel galvanized and shop-painted white deeply angled V-shaped screens were inspired by their nautical surroundings—seagulls and seaplanes in the adjacent harbour and hang gliders that take flight from nearby Grouse Mountain. THE GOLDEN TICKET The living units frame the spectacular water and mountain views of Vancouver. On-site add-ons include multi-purpose spaces, a common roof deck and urban agricultural plots. Supplementing the solar shading on the south and west elevations, features added for a LEED Gold certification include stormwater management, high performance double-glazed curtain window wall, operable windows for natural ventilation, concrete with recycled content and personalized thermal control. A golden ticket, indeed!

Set in the outskirts of popular retreat destination Valle de Bravo near Mexico City, this exquisite country house was designed to make the most of its extensive natural surroundings.
LET THE LIGHT SHINE IN! The space comes alive when light hits the stonework, piercing through the massive picture windows that delimit the rooms’ enclosure from the outside world while offering uninterrupted views onto the forest scenery. Opened fully by day, these windows serve to connect the outdoor and indoor living quarters seamlessly. INSIDE & OUT While the exteriors predominantly feature stonework, the interiors showcase these same stone walls left exposed, black ironwork features, poured concrete flooring, wood of various hues and a curated art selection that give the home a contemporary and innovative twist.

Belgium Beer Time Bliss
After having lived at the rhythm of the capital, a young couple set their sights on a quiet neighborhood with trees in the heart of the Belgian countryside.
DISCONNECTING BY RECONNECTING Living in tune with life’s simple pleasure was the red thread of this architectural reflection by Open Architectes. The house sits on a long and gently sloping plot. It follows the relief and opens wide towards the nearby grove, creating an optimal connection with its surrounding nature. GARDEN SIDE While the office and the guest bedroom are set up at the front of the house, in relation to the street, the high-ceiling living room is located at the back to enjoy the view of the garden. As for the master bedroom, it is placed above on the mezzanine and enclosed in a glass box to gain perspective towards the green space and the morning rays while maintaining privacy. HIGH TECH, PURE & SIMPLE The envelope developed is energetically efficient thanks to its prefabricated wood structure in the workshop and injected with cellulose, its complement of wood fiber panels, its triple-glazed frames and its green roof. NEITHER HOT NOR COLD As for thermal efficiency, the house bypasses the need for a conventional heating system. Believe it or not, only a pellet stove is needed to make chilly winter eves pleasant. And to avoid overheating on hot summer days, the lot’s large trees and an overhanging house roof guarantee sufficient shade to counter the sun’s most hot rays. Brilliant!

The Gastown Child Care Centre is an innovative response to an intriguing concept proposed by the City of Vancouver to develop child care centers atop underutilized parkades in the downtown core.
ABOVE CAR TRAFFIC & PARKING The compelling concept designed by Acton Ostry Architects required an equally creative design and construction response. The innovative solution laid forward features twinned, prefabricated child care facilities located at the rooftop level of two parkades, separated by an alley and connected with a series of vehicular and pedestrian bridges.
BRIGHT & BOLD COLORS The buildings are clad with rusty-red-hued panels while bright yellow storage sheds enliven the outdoor play areas that are further animated with bold and colorful imaginative play opportunities such as a multi-colored tricycle court that most anyone, young and old, would love to race around on.
EASY BEING GREEN To support Vancouver’s ambitious Greenest City goals, the project is designed to achieve both Passive House and LEED Gold certification, with a focus on net zero energy and low-carbon fuel sources.
FACING THE PORT Both buildings are oriented toward the spectacular Northshore Mountains and Burrard Inlet with views of rail yards, marine traffic, float planes and the Port of Vancouver’s ins and outs. The architectural expression is both playful and contemporary, and is in perfect tune with the existing parkades and the surrounding built context of the highly active and historic Gastown hood.

CLEAR REFERENCES Covering 43,000 m2, the departures and arrivals building is comprised of two distinct volumes. The first is defined by its wooden ceiling, the second, by its blue color. FLY FREE BIRD, FLY! For years, architects have sought to create references to the world of flight by playing with the lightness of terminal roof designs. Here, the departure hall ceiling designed by ALA Architects plays with the concept of lightness, but combines it with extreme weight. The plasticity of the overall shape gives the impression that the ceiling is floating in the air. The flowing shapes of the spruce planks, resembling contour lines, make them an inverted version of a three-dimensional topographic map, directing passengers’ thoughts to the sky above the runway.
ARRIVE TO A SURPRISE On the lower level, passengers exiting customs are greeted by a nature diorama. This free-form installation with trees, shrubs and stones in a large planter combines the characteristics of Finnish nature with the art of Japanese gardens. Peering through the diamond-shaped opening above the diorama, passengers see both the wooden ceiling of the departures hall and the blue sky through the large skylight. Welcome to Helsinki!
Photo : Tuomas Uusheimo
THE BLUE OF THE SKY Upon entering the departures hall, passengers are greeted by a blue area immediately behind the check-in kiosks. A color that soothes. A good choice for a terminal where passenger stress can sometimes be off the charts.

Lost & Found City Greenery
A COMMUNITY-BUILDING VISION Encompassing eight city blocks, fostering an ambitious community-building vision guided by fifteen years of planning, it has become one of Canada’s largest mixed-use projects. THE DESIGN NARRATIVE The design narrative begins with the creation of a 9-acre public park, accessible to all, that drapes over new retail space in an undulating landscape. New retail street walls define the perimeter and high street, knitting together the surrounding urban fabric. Sculpted into the landscapes are retail gallerias, plazas and public amenities which emerge and define the edges of the park. SKIN & SKELETON From this foundation, office and residential towers terrace upward, capped by iconic towers marking gateways. A design vocabulary of skin and skeleton builds on this, using the draped park as a key element and reinterpreting the towers as emerging from the landscape, adorned with their own skins. As per its bones, a.k.a. the tower slabs, they are seen along the edges where skins are pulled back revealing deep balconies and retail storefronts. NATURE & TOPOGRAPHY When originally built, the pre-existing mall had destroyed one of the last old-growth forest parks in Vancouver. This inspired a desire to replace this lost green space within the new development. The result is a modern street-oriented urban experience, incorporating nature and topography.
Leveraging the potential of a 28-acre site in Vancouver’s city center, the Oakridge Redevelopment promises to be a groundbreaking cultural and civic hub.

The garden house in the city
Christos Pavlou Architecture

Cyprus City Garden
Photos : Unseen Views
Bringing nature back to the city is not a new idea, but it is a growing imperative for cities like Nicosia in Cyprus. Erasure of the borders between the private domain and the public domain and nature at the heart of architecture.
THE PROJECT’S KEY ELEMENT Such a garden house helps to promote, conserve and expand the existing public landscape and also seeks to enhance the city’s biodiversity by raising a series of private gardens. Here, greenery surrounds the house and, by dividing its mass into two rectangular cubes, part of the vegetation is directed into the heart of the house to become a green courtyard. Additionally, green terraces on the first floor continue the garden theme. A PROTAGONIST GARDEN The garden, in the center of it all, becomes the protagonist of the house and the rest of the areas are organized and anchored around it. The result is an enchanting whole that brings the user closer to nature.
A HOME FOR THE BEES The integration of green intervals in the house includes the planting of gardens on 60% of the surface of the land, the use of green terraces on the first floor, the development of bee-friendly landscaping and more than fifty varieties of native wildflowers. A REVOLUTION This proposal by Christos Pavlou Architecture revolutionizes the traditional typology of the urban private house by eliminating all the limits of the house and thus making it more public. A domestication of the neighborhood that provides effortless access to Le Corbusier’s three “essentials of joy”, sunlight, air and greenery.

Geneva’s Théâtre de la Nouvelle Comédie is much more than a simple theater hall. This “factory of artistic expression” brings together, and under one roof, all the professions of live events.
A THEATER WITHIN A CITY Designed by FRES ARCHITECTES, Laurent Gravier and Sara Martín Cámara, the new building had to be hyper-functional while displaying a unique architectural profile that gives the building its own identity. LIKE ORIGAMI Conceived in the continuity of the European theater, the large theater hall displays a frontal stage-room relationship. The envelope of the Italian-style hall is made of a folded and faceted panels which accommodate all the necessary acoustic and light devices. A METAMORPHOSING PROFILE While classic theaters distinguish the stage cage as the central element of the building's composition, the crenelated profile characteristic of this project brilliantly and modernly expresses the multiplicity of activities present in the new theater. Discreet and neutral by day, the architecture expresses the character of a place of creation and production. A CITY WITHIN A THEATER Generous and transparent, the hall space creates links between the interior and the exterior and expresses the theater’s openness upon the city. In the evening, the hall’s facades are lit in red staging the volume in the cityscape and inviting the spectator in for the show. After all, in the words of Jean Villar: “When designing a theater hall, the scenography begins on the sidewalk since that is where the evening starts”.

An Exquisite Endeavor to Perfection

What started off as a very simple modernized remodel of an Italian villa in California beautifully progressed into an immaculately and meticulously curated work of art.
A MOVING TARGET The ever-changing moving target of the house’s design made it challenging for L.A. Architectural Designer Otoniel Solis to stay on the tip of his toes at every more, constantly improving the whole with a true attention to detail. As the house got cleaner, the client felt enticed to increase the scope of the project. The result is a luxury home as breathtaking as the surrounding Californian sea, mountains and skyline. SYMMETRY-LOVER With a client most fond of symmetry but existing conditions that were nothing but symmetrical, material connections were designed to arrive flush with one another. They align in such a way that creates a virtual grid and a perfectly balanced composition. ONE BY ONE Interiors were brilliantly rearranged to maximize the hosts’ entertainment program such ranging from movie-watching on the silver screen or full-scale parties held inside or by the pool. While only a few were originally planned to be removed, one by one, villa columns were torn down. By the end, the entire house spanned from one end to the other, allowing completely unobstructed views upon the spectacular scenery and views. THE WIND BENEATH THE WINGS The architecture talents chose to allude to the house’s imposing and extended flat roof as if it were its wings. It creates a floating effect, as if the masterpiece was taken flight, touching the ground only at the tip of its extremities. Splendid!

One Breach, Two Volumes & Endless Bliss
Here, the house layout is strategically separated into two distinct one-level volumes, linked by an adjoining breach that serves as a passage and terrace. DEEP INTO THE WOODS In the heart of the Eastern Townships woods, the country house’s lot is characterized by a hilly landscape. At its highest point, the property is topped with a bedrock on which the new construction sits, strongly anchored. TWO VOLUMES, TWO FUNCTIONS While the main volume hosts the living and sleeping spaces, the second volume contains the functional areas such as a workshop and a guest loft. Shared living quarters face the Mount Orford on the North side of the lot to offer exceptional views in every nature’s season.
THE ILLUSION OF A SPLIT Designed by _NATUREHUMAINE, the house is kept to its most elementary shape. The two buildings entities are divided by an exterior passage cladded in the same wood as the overall envelope. It gives the illusion that a natural phenomenon has split an initial entity into two distinct parts. A BRILLIANTLY FRAMED PANORAMA Magnified by the floating sensation of the house’s anchoring at the edge of the sloping lot, the views are simply exceptional. The viewpoints are treated both as picture frames onto the nature and as wide panoramic glazed apertures overlooking the undulating landscape profile. A SELF-AFFIRMED MINIMALISM Inside the house, white painted walls and ceilings, diamond polished concrete floors as well as a lack of conventional baseboards are some of the minimalist characteristics that serve to reinforce the simplicity and purity of the space.

A Fabulous Whiff of Pine
Nestled in a domain of the emblematic Mont-Tremblant with a seducing elevation of 932 meters, La Cédrière is anchored on its site, in perfect harmony with the roundabout before it and the woods in the back.
CREATING INTIMACY The unevenness on the land’s limits forced the establishment of the house in the heart of it all, establishing, by the same occasion, the intimacy and the privacy of the residence. WOOD FOREVER & ALWAYS Here, the wooden slats that make up the facades act, sometimes, as a protective screen, and other times, as a frame open to the landscape. The cedar wood blinders participate in the project’s kinetics. Sometimes transparent, sometimes opaque, the contrasting composition of the facades brings a dynamic reading that anchors the building to its surrounding landscape. A ROMANTIC INTERIOR Inside, the bay windows that fully inhabit the surface of the walls blur the boundaries between the seasonal landscapes and the inhabited interiors. The plan revolves around two dark objects, the staircase and the fireplace. They create a liaison amongst the space, allowing partial division of uses and participating in the expression of the double height of the house’s compact plan. MIRROR, MIRROR Emphasizing the space’s fluidity, glass partitions and imposing mirrors use their reflections to let its surrounding landscape in, over the full depth of the residence. Brilliant! The whole is imbued with the master skills of Blanchette Architectes.

A Mile-End Love Story
Photos : Maxime Brouillet
In order to live a retirement to take full advantage of urban life, two sisters unite and reinvent the duplex house with love, simplicity and imagination.
BAGELS & ARCADE FIRE The story unfolds in Montreal’s trendiest neighborhood, the made famous for its bagel joints and emergence of musical talents such as Arcade Fire Mile-End. PUZZLE-MAKING SKILLS La Shed Architecture was presented with the challenge of renovating and expanding this duplex to create a quality living environment that promotes cohabitation. Thus one of the sisters occupies the ground floor and the basement with her husband, while the other sister takes up residence on the first floor. Bingo! A STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN A monumental staircase unites all levels and living quarters while submerging the house with light. At the very top of it all, a shared space to meet and mingle makes family gatherings a piece of pie and an adjacent terrace turns enjoying sunsets into a daily pleasure.
A GEM, A JEWEL, A HOME In keeping with the language of the front facade, the rear wall replays the textured appearance of split stone by crossing its bricks diagonally. Fine steel rods slipped into the exposed cavities of the bricks form a weave with the railings of the terraces, amplifying the textile aesthetics of the facade. Here, the openings’ regularity, symmetry and verticality contribute to the classic character of the place. Here is a successful marriage between classic and contemporary architecture which magnifies the quality of the living space for two sisters and their shared family.

A Clever Nod to Jacques Cartier’s Ships
The fauna, flora and the river can be rediscovered thanks to this cyclopedestrian footbridge which spreads out above the Saint-Charles river and where Jacques Cartier’s ships had docked to spend the harsh winter of 1536.
ASYMMETRIC, LIGHTWEIGHT & DELICATE Lightweight and delicate, the asymmetrical architectural concept imagined by ABCP architecture consists of a fully suspended structure of steel cables and cylindrical stringers that support a cross-laminated timber deck. Its masts fill an identifying function that symbolically references explorer Jacques Cartier’s ships. IN SYMBIOSIS WITH FAUNA & FLORA Respectful of its natural site and surrounding environment, here is a seamless integration of an urban infrastructure into the natural environment and urban fabric. SHOWCASING WOOD & NATURE The use of wood presented a challenge as to how to create a flexible and delicate structure in appearance, despite its structural need for strength and stability. The pathway surface is composed of prefabricated wood panels laid in a herringbone pattern that provides a dynamic graphic effect when lit come nightfall. A FOUR-SEASON BELVEDERE Suspended under the main bridge, a lower footbridge features a lookout for the exclusive use of pedestrians and provides intimate contact with the river’s flora and fauna, as well as an exceptional view of the main bridge’s exposed wooden structure. It connects both the pedestrian and bike paths through an intricate set of inclined planes.

A Masterpiece of Mountain & River

This vacay tiny house, nestled on the mountainside of Les Éboulements pays homage to the exceptional landscape of the Charlevoix region… a masterpiece of mountain and river.
A MARTINI & A FEW PENCIL STROKES Repère Boréal’s most recent eco-habitat imagined by visionary brothers Jonathan and Simon Galarneau revisits a classic. Redesigned in the shape of a diamond with purposeful bold angles and straight lines that echo trees has landed upon les Éboulements to calmly gaze at the river. ABOVE THE TREE LINE Perched at more than 10 meters among the trees, the eco-tree-cabin deploys its space amongst the majestic nature while leaving a minimal imprint on the ground. A series of white metal birch trees blend in with the forest to anchor the mini-chalet. In the lower branches, a swing built from a restored chairlift pays tribute to the ski mountains nearby.
BETWEEN EARTH & SKY, LAND & WATER In this sanctuary of peace, guests are invited to settle down and satisfy their desire for beauty. The walnut and the brass of the handles, in desired dissonance with the light cherry wood walls, the underlining of the repeated silences in the angle of the ventilation slots and the voluptuous curves of the doors and the furniture… everything, inside and out, was imagined to harmonize with the sublimity of nature surrounding.

The Bold & Beautiful
Located a few steps from Place Ville Marie, 1000 de la Gauchetière and the Sunlife Building, the residential tower that is 1228 Mansfield benefits from a most emblematic built environment. JURY’S KUDO « This development project promises residential units with a meticulously thought out design. Simply exceptional! A unique location and an unparalleled architecture for the Montreal of tomorrow!»
IT’S NOBLE! Nineteen stories high, this neoclassical tower will house 248 units. The Stanstead stone exterior fascinates. There are architectural reminders of the famous Loews Theater, which contributed to the Montreal cultural scene for decades before fading away and closing. The Mansfield will thus be erected in symbiosis with a location rich in history. Alleluia! IT’S IN! In the spirit of the times, comings and goings will be contactless, thanks to a smartphone application. This means that the air quality will be impeccable in common areas. Nothing less!
IT’S CURRENT! Designed for an active life in the city, the Mansfield will house three conference rooms that will be available to telecommuters. IT’S SMART! BRIVIA GROUP, in partnership with the Tianqing Investment Group and in close collaboration with the architectural firm Béïque Legault Thuot Architectes, is also adding a pedestrian walkway in the extension of rue Cathcart. This means that Dorchester Square and Philipps Square will finally be connected, and by heated sidewalks… a blessing! Kampai!

Griffintown, Reborn!
Photos : Primer pour Prével
Located near the Lachine Canal, here is a project that resolutely carries a vision of promoting the urban requalification of a booming sector, the Griffintown district of Pointe-Saint-Charles.
AT THE HEART OF THE ACTION At the turn of the 2000s, the successive phases of the Lowney project made it possible to revitalize the Griffintown District. Continuing this momentum, real estate developer Prével puts the Quartier Général in orbit in the sector’s west end. Close to all these commercial, collective or cultural centers that contribute to the rebirth of the district, the project sits in the “eye of the storm”, at the heart of the action and of a healthy urban hood. CLOSE TO THE CANAL Using the Lachine Canal as a backdrop, the project revolves around a volume parallel to William Street, an urban strategy employed when deploying other projects along this axis of river communication. The project is inspired by a surrounding commercial presence by dedicating the entire ground floor facing William Street to this use, as well as part of the same level facing Richmond Street. HISTORY & INNOVATION True to the leader’s approach to real estate development, this project is inspired by the industrial constructions of a former working-class district which is one of the oldest in the city. HERITAGE & URBAN FABRIC Well integrated into the surrounding urban fabric, the Quartier Général project takes advantage of the public space and highlights the historical layouts that have always structured the sector.

For Amphibians & Humans
The City of Terrebonne wanted to provide the site with reception facilities to ensure that the site’s frequentation by curious visitors and ornithologists would be in line with the park's protected area status.
RESIDENT BIRDS, FISH & AMPHIBIANS The Ruisseau de Feu conservation park project is one of the most important restoration projects in Quebec. It is a migration site for many bird species and a spawning ground for fish and amphibians that frequent the Rivière des Prairies. A RESPECTED NATURAL HABITAT Imagined by Projet Paysage, the development project aims to preserve the natural habitats present and to improve the use of the environment by wildlife by offering a quality habitat to the species that cohabit here. ORNITHOLOGISTS & PHOTOGRAPHERS WELCOME Frequented by ornithologists and photographers as much as by the population for recreational purposes, the City of Terrebonne wanted to provide the site with reception facilities and develop marked trails and walkways and build both a shelter allowing site interpretation and an observation tower covering the swamp, the marsh and the river banks. A PUNCTUATED ROUTE The discovery trail is punctuated with interpretive steles to enrich and become aware of the places. A place to discover!
JURY’S KUDO « This quite exceptional project gives dignity to the park and offers a unifying and generous reception building at the height of the majestic nature to be explored. Its strength lies in the harmony created between the architectural elements and the surrounding forest. Wonderful! »

Industrial Garden of Eden
This splendid garden is located on former farmland in a pristine valley in the mountains, north of Longyan City, in China. Natural springs and the overflow of the mountain reservoir flow through the center of the mega industrial campus.
A CUSTOMER IN THE FIELD The customer Longking specializes in industrial environmental protection equipment and research. A CASE OF SPECIES To create this romantic and colorful landscaping, BAM used the environmental technologies developed in-house. Thus, wastewater from the office tower is treated using the plant’s integrated wastewater treatment unit and then filtered through man-made and natural wetlands before being introduced into the landscape’s water system. DETAILS THAT ADD UP Details add up to create an ecological and sustainable whole. This eloquent example says it all. Longking genetically engineers rice varieties that remove heavy metals from the topsoil. A conical tent structure invites itself to the site to prevent animals from entering the area of the ground containing heavy metals. FANCY A GREEN TEA? Here, the landscape functions as a showcase for people to better understand the underlying natural processes on which we depend. A bamboo hatshaped tea house pavilion, sports fields and daybeds laid under a linear trellis offer production line workers, researchers and company personnel the opportunity to create a new form of recreational engagement while appropriating the various ecological processes and technologies that they develop in their days’ work.

Experiencing Nature’s Luxury
Photo : Maha
For this prestigious and emblematic landscaping project, the Chinese architects worked in close collaboration with famous Indonesian hotelier Adrian Zecha.
SHUFFLING THE CARDS The site occupies Chaoyang Park’s northern edge near the Old Prince’s Palace in Beijing. At the time of the garden’s design, the site’s architecture was a mixture of four occupied residential towers, five unoccupied towers, a club and several classical Chinese and Roman gatehouses in various states of functionality. REIMAGINING A PARK For the landscape design, the architects took into account a beautiful woodland and weaved together disparate aspects of the site, into a seamless series of gardens, functional spaces and circulation routes. Existing landscape spaces mingling with new landscapes, conflicting styles, periods and cultural references are smoothed with the minimalist landscape approach of Ballistic Architecture Machine (BAM). Photo : Banye
THE PRINCIPLES OF CREATION A garden is not built in a day, it must grow. Luxury in the landscape is measured over time. When we look at a majestic or luxurious landscape, we see time itself. We see years of growth, years of maintenance, and seasonal progressions.

A Remarkable Space-Time Bubble
Photos : Marc Cramer
This multihyphenate concept resulted from a transdisciplinary collaboration between architecture, landscape architecture, branding and graphic design. The result is a vast redevelopment of a portion of Expo 67’s emblematic site in Montreal. ECHOING THE PAST’S AVANT-GARDISM The series of grandiose gestures put forward by Lemay echoes the avant-garde architecture of the time, creating a place of wonder in the heart of Parc Jean-Drapeau. MAKING SHAPES TALK The language of forms reveals the quality of the built and natural environment as well as the historical aspect and the genius of the place. The backbone of the site, its main walkway, creates a visual and thematic link between the Biosphere, the metro station entrance and Calder’s Three Discs sculpture. A PLACE FOR ART The project also includes the enhancement of three works of art that will be installed in various
areas of the site. Unobstructed views of the riverbanks and the river guide visitors through a space-time bubble inspired by the spirit of innovation and openness rightly associated with Expo 67. THE NOSTALGIA OF THE LAND Wishing to increase the biodiversity and the presence of native species of the site, representative landscaping treatments, adapted to the environments and uses and a strategy for the conservation of natural resources were put in place. Creating landscaped atmospheres that are inspired by the character of the place, the new Espace67 captures the spirit of the time and the picturesque character of Frederick Gage Todd’s original landscape design.

Creating a Healthy Ecosystem
Photo : WAA_Antoine Crépeau
Alas, a wetland transformed at the beginning of the millennium into an artificial pond was invaded by undesirable plants which transformed it into a colonized and closed marsh. The mission, here? To revive the Montreal Botanical’s Garden’s pond into a healthy one.
Photo : WAA_Ziad Haddad
Photo : WAA_Vincent Asselin
AT WORK! The perimeter of the pond was therefore lightly enlarged in order to better connect it to its immediate environment, and its bathymetry was greatly modified to ensure favorable banks for the establishment of aquatic plants and areas of open water. The perimeter is surrounded by a submerged gabion path to be taken during maintenance operations.
Photo : Céline Paradis-JBM
ECOLOGICAL MORPHOLOGY Several factors essential to the health of water bodies were considered by WAA+ in the concept of this new pond, such as oxygen rates, sunlight exposure and prevailing winds, the presence of thriving aquatic grass beds, and the optimal ratio of aquatic plants to open water. Together, these factors will condition the composition and morphology of the entire layout.
Assisting banks, densely populated with various native plants, in their filtration role, are floating and vegetated coconut fiber rafts and islands.
NAMASTE Offering places to sit in contemplation of nature, universally accessible welcoming ramps and cozy platforms dress up the space. Frédéric Back would be quite proud.
Photo : WAA_Ziad Haddad
MARRIAGE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT The planting also sculpts the landscape thanks to the mobility of the vegetated islands that animate the painting. As for the pond’s upstream waterfall, it enhances the soundscape magically and supplies the pond with fresh, filtered water. Amen!

How To Make a Luscious Garden Quilt
This Tudor-inspired cottage home offers a lush and invigorating canvas of rich textures. Its series of spaces, each offering a distinct atmosphere, weaves a vibrant and coherent grid that welcomes a variety of uses.
SYMMETRY & HARMONY Immersive, the approach to the house brings guests through a stunning contemporary entrance parterre where symmetry and chromatic harmony temper the abundant aerial blooms of pink astilbes, liatris and hydrangeas. A graphic alignment of stepping-stone that intersects the brickwork contributes to the rhythmic configuration of textures. GREEN ROOM A clever outdoor setting adjacent to the kitchen is formalized in front of the house, highlighting its existing crabapple tree and framed by the light foliage of a native serviceberry hedge that screens parked cars. OUTDOOR LIVING In the rear yard, a convivial living room provides soothing views and the warmth of a fire table. A refined dining room, set on natural stone paving, is conveniently sited directly outside the kitchen door. An intimate hidden garden screened by a row of Japanese maples is revealed on axis with the door and features as its focal point, a family heirloom fountain. STANDING THE TEST OF TIME The garden is enchanted by mature maples, birches and spruce trees that already formed a pleasant border, hornbeams, Japanese maples, serviceberries, eastern redbuds, yews and a wide variety of perennials brilliantly incorporated in the spirit of English cottage gardens. This harmonious quilt of durable materials and plant textures created by Robitaille Curtis magnifies the property’s elegance and promises to stand the test of time.

In the Midst of a Forest
In designing this dreamy landscape, the vision was to kneel before nature’s majestic nature and embrace its geography to magnify and beautify it. UNDER THE CREATIVE LENS The embrace of the site’s topography and the conservation of key Quebec forest environment elements such as trees and stones support the intention and create a place of experience that juggles brilliantly between the wooded cover and the landscaped garden. THE MATERIALS THAT ENTER THE DANCE The choice of materials was studied to weave a link between the context of insertion and the architecture which blends in gently. The same goes for the layout lines, which relax the further they move away from the house in order to dialogue with the organic atmosphere of the forest and to offer a walk that crisscrosses the site.
A TOUCH OF NIGHT BLUE IN THE PANORAMA An infinity-type swimming pool highlights the wooded canopy which is reflected in the water. Acting as the backyard’s focal point, it offers a visual spectacle upon entry and contributes to the relaxation area ambiance, adjoining the house. IN ORGANIC HARMONY Here, ornamental and native plants cohabit beautifully in the landscape design imagined by Vertige paysage. Together, they form a green ensemble well mastered by man, yet wonderfully authentic. Namaste!

Taming Nature’s Wild Side
This Lac Saint-Joseph residence in the Capitale-Nationale is located in a green setting where you can admire, from one surprise to the next, the landscaping created for an athletic, to say the least. THE STARTING LINE From the outset, EVOQ Architecture de paysage took care to give guidelines for the layout of the house, according to the enhancement of the natural landscape and outdoor spaces. The approach was based on a careful evaluation of the views to preserve and those to hide in order to optimize the near and distant perspectives of the residence. A GREENERY SETTING Once arrived on site, the green setting integrates the wooded area, the monumental trees and the low plantations, and directs our gaze towards the house’s wonderful. The landscape architect also proposed a paving with clear geometric shapes, and tones reminiscent of those of the house punctuated by portions of perfectly mown lawn.
A REINVENTED SPORTING FIELD A large sports area is set up on the garage’s roof hidden in the land’s topography. The client can choose to indulge in basketball, hockey or tennis there, day and night, and even enjoy music blasting out of its integrated sound system! TREES IN THE FRONT ROW The landscaping project’s objective was to minimize the felling of trees as much as possible. Mission accomplished! Other large trees have also been added to harmonize with the current wooded area and preserve customer intimacy. Alleluia!

A Walkway of Waves Receding
At the threshold of a high tower surrounded by dense residential development, lives a green and inviting place for the community. Here is an elegant sculpture garden that reinforces the distinctive character of a prestigious Île-des-Sœurs address. THE VALLEY IN ALL ITS BEAUTY Designed to showcase the famous artist Linda Covit’s sculptures as much as the ecosystems of the Laurentian Valley, the forecourt of the Evolo X Tower welcomes residents and visitors with elegance and freshness. Winding paths lined with organically sculpted embankments direct walkers to the entrance. THE WATERS OF THE ST. LAWRENCE The sculpture’s motifs echo the ripple effect of the St. Lawrence waters, which runs along the site, As for the plant palette chosen by RobitailleCurtis, it recalls the promontories and coastal meadows’ natural ecosystems.
EVOLO X’ S FOUR SEASONS While crabapple, serviceberry, hawthorn, narcissus and squill offer the first spring flowers, salvia, thistle and echinacea brighten up the supple carpet of grass in summer. When fall comes, the red maples warm up while the junipers, spruces and scarlet twigs of the dogwood trees enliven the white of winter. SPOTLIGHT ON ART On the ground, cobblestones give the impression of waves receding from the shore, while accentuating the effect of chiaroscuro in the space, prolonged, in the evening, by carefully planned dramatic lighting.

Space is Everything This creative triforce knew how to push its reflection on human existence and perceptions until they came up with a concept of paradoxical evolution. Space is Everything is an artist’s journey to visually and physically render the mystery of human experience.
AN UNDERGROUND PARKING Here, the backdrop is this indoor and underground car park, this separate and independent space, disconnected from the outside world. Soundless and dark, hidden under the cosmopolitan center of the city, here is a space of self-expression that has remained silent, unloved and waiting.
ENTER THE VOID CYRCLE, LNDMRK and Lune Rouge unite in this adventure. A vortex of light and color is introduced into it, creating a place where we can physically enter a moment in which our reality becomes empty and offers us physical and dimensional transport through it all.
FOR AN INFORMED PUBLIC The entrance to the car park warns the viewer of what awaits him: he must drop all logical conception and surrender to space. So be it! DIVE INTO THE DREAM The disconnect from the real world of this physical experience begins as the garage door closes behind the driver, guiding the viewer’s car through the subterranean levels of space. By plunging into the underground and doing tabula rasa, we thus explore the dream landscape and experience an intense curiosity and a feeling of wonder.
JURY’S KUDO « A completely harmonious and surprising art integration in a parking, nonetheless! Here is a successful appropriation of space that creates a new dimension. Art transforms an anonymous environment into a welcoming and fun place! Well done!»

Oklahoma City’s new convention center’s art installation creates a new common language for this city on a plain under a vast sky. Enter Virtual Sky, a synergy of fixed and fluid elements, a layering of form and light and of movement captured in real time. HI-TECH SKY The suspended structure, imagined by California’s Narduli Studio, spans the two glass public atriums. Within each, anodized titanium forms create an environment inspired by the sky’s movement. Their reflective surfaces respond to light and shadow, reconceptualizing the beauty and changeability of the sky through technology. COLOR SHIFTS The palette evokes the subtle shifts of color one experiences throughout the day and as seasons change. Within this field of color, a grid of 60,000 points of light connected to a stream of Oklahoma City Data Portals traces weather patterns in real time. Each point of light is individually addressable, allowing for a canvas of infinite visual possibilities.

DIGITAL SIMULACRUM Together, the suspended titanium and light structure create an immersive visual experience, a digital simulacrum that parallels the complexity of the ongoing natural phenomena of the vast, changeable, majestic sky that is so much a part of this city. DAY & NIGHT From the street, Virtual Sky plays with the ever-changing reflections of the Convention Center curtain wall. In the evening, the animated movement of color is experienced inside and out. THE SYMBOLIC OF RED In this architectural design, red refers to the Quartier des Spectacles’ cultural institutions’ brand where it stands to host, notably, the headquarters of the National Film Board. RED, RED… LINE! The red wall of the northern part of the island folds inwards before touching the ground, increasing the lightness and transparency of the ground floor in a floating impression. Located in the cultural hub of the city, Îlot Balmoral becomes a central point and a major player in its environment. And since pictures are worth a thousand words, the work of Stéphane Brügger photographer tells it all! A PLACE TO SHINE The opening splits the building into two distinct blocks and reveals a full-height atrium. These daylight photographs are a reminder of the extent to which sun rays penetrate to the very depths of the building and illuminate the footbridges which connect the two volumes. LIGHTNESS & TRANSPARENCY The red graphic scar allows natural light to penetrate the heart of the building and to showcase the two volumes’ surprising angles. All the lightness and transparency of the volumes are felt in the shots of this project which revisits the world of the arts thanks to a modern and assumed architectural language.

Germain, You Dazzle My Heart!
Le Germain Montreal Hotel innovates once again my displaying an impressive permanent mural on its front facade, a vertical rainbow adding joy and bedazzlement to the downtown concrete world.
ART & HOSPITALITY Signed by Canadian artist Michelle Hoogveld, this large-scale project is the result of a collaboration with Mural. A COLORFUL PREMIERE Hotel guests now have an extraordinary experience waiting for them somewhere over the rainbow mural. The work brings an unexpected splash of color and a wonderfully disconcerting cheerfulness to downtown Montreal. The visual artist designed an original work specifically imagined for the building. Her idea was to create a sectional color gradient in which each of the sections would transition to the next. PUTTING HER HEART INTO HER ART "Dazzle My Heart" is not only a major artistic project, it was also a logistical feat. Suspended from the Le Germain Montréal’s roof, the muralist applied more than eighty different colors to create this 171-foot-high mural, reaching the 17th floor of the hotel. The result is a polychome, variegated and colourful facelift and a “razzle dazzle”- patterned black-and-white side profile that gave the artwork its name. LOVE AT SECOND GLANCE “The work has a hidden heart in it, but it is well hidden!”, admits the artist. It, however, is paramount to the concept. “My art always comes back to the emotional reaction we have with the colors.” What can we say, except… love is in the air!

AURÈLE CARDINAL
Humanist, Visionary, Innovative & Commanding! By Madeleine Champagne
The visionary and humanist architect and urban planner Aurèle Cardinal is known for co-founding Cardinal-Hardy back in the 1980s and now partners with a son and daughter at the head of Humà Design + Architecture. He is this year’s GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN life achievement award nominee. Through his involvement and his passion, Aurèle has truly marked the urban landscape by rebuilding the bridges between the past, the present and the future of the city. PICTURE-PERFECT
Aurèle. A first name of Greek origin. It comes from “aurum”, and means “morning”… when and where it all begins… And, for Aurèle Cardinal, the eldest of five children, life begins on a farm in Saint-Laurent, with 25 beautiful cows and a three-day-a-week run to the Jean-Talon market to deliver fresh produce. A GRADUATE DESTINY
Already, as a youngster, he enjoyed patching up old farm buildings. Could it be at this moment that his search for authenticity was born and from there that comes his classical rationalism which aims to return to the essential form? Perhaps!
Later in life, Aurèle Cardinal did his classical course at the College de Saint-Laurent under the Fathers of Sainte-Croix, who, with their sensitivity to arts and fondness of theater, created fertile ground to guide his future. As a matter of fact, it was in a Latin class, when a friend spoke of architecture to him that the seed was sown - pun on his childhood farm days, intended! Who could have claimed that this farmer’s son, who did not speak a word of English, would subsequently be accepted at McGill University where he would obtain his bachelor’s degree in architecture (1965–1970) and move on to a master’s degree in urban planning (Université de Montréal, 1975). THE WORK OF A LIFETIME
Both architect and urban planner, Aurèle Cardinal took on to change the face of Montreal through numerous interventions in complex urban environments. His mission has always remained on target: to restore the city to human culture. This is how, deeply rooted in the sensitivity of the time, his vocabulary transcends the image. Another way of putting in would be by borrowing Aurèle’s own words. “Each project is a piece of the city that restores the bridges between what has been and what will be our urban reality”.

THE OLD PORT OF MONTREAL, 1992
The dialogue that Aurèle has been able to re-establish with the city over the course of his career has allowed him to sign and design major projects at the center of his work. Namely, we are referring to major projects such as the lighting plan for Old Montreal, the lock repair of the Lachine Canal, the Place d’Armes, the Cité du multimedia, the entrance to the Bonaventure highway and the Notre-Dame bridge, and more! In the redevelopment of the Old Port, the river motivated all of Aurèle Cardinal’s interventions. The existing buildings were kept in order to respect the essence of the port’s industrial architecture. The rue de la Commune’s redevelopment resulted in the creation of an esplanade designed primarily for walkers and more… It was a place of rebirth in an urban context… Montreal and its inhabitants could, alas, reconquer their river.
AURÈLE CARDINAL, PHOTOGRAPHED ON ONE OF THE OLD PORT OF MONTREAL’S HANGAR ROOFTOPS. © MARC CRAMER
His ongoing concern for integration, preservation of environment and history led him to design recycling projects, at a time when demolishing buildings was a sign of modernity. In fact, back then, two options were laid on the table: demolish the quays or redevelop the Old Port area into an urban park on the scale of large ships, a unique morphology that would celebrate the excessiveness of the port complex. The project had an international influence and made Montreal a heritage of the major port cities of the world. Twelve awards of excellence, including the Governor General of Canada award, were also earned. A FIRST, THE REDPATH REFINERY
Note the Redpath Sugar Refinery loft development project along the Lachine Canal offering a new co-living trend, unheard of in Montreal, but well known in cities like New York. Built within the former Redpath Sugar factory, this project is a marvel in itself, as it has revitalized a set of historic industrial buildings that are part of one of the oldest industrial areas in Canada. Its ceilings of up to 13.5 feet in height blend in with the huge windows and the sleek design of the project. At the turn of the 21st century, the new owners were smiling from ear to ear.

THE NEW HAVRE BASINS
Aurèle Cardinal was able to motivate his team to rebuild the city, while keeping the sense of place, the specificity of Montreal. After long discussions with the Canada Lands Company and Parks Canada, the Bassin du Havre master plan project took shape. The establishment of a residential project on a former industrial site of Canada Post and the conservation of the morphology of traces of the past has been possible from the development of the old port basins. A pioneering project in sustainable development, the project won a LEED Neighborhood award. Here again, this man’s essential contribution to the development of a Montreal on a human scale had a major and positive impact on today’s and tomorrow’s cityscape. THE MULTIMEDIA CITY WITHIN A CITY
TOUR DES CANADIENS 1, BY CARDINAL-HARDY ARCHITECTES, 2011-2014
Located between Old Montreal and downtown, sits Griffintown with its abandoned 19th-century industrial buildings that were redeveloped into a business hub for information technology companies. With the insertion of new buildings, the architecture created matches the morphology of the sector, la cité du multimédia was born! Today, there are about 8,000 employees in the Multimedia City, but the neighborhood continues to grow. And Aurèle Cardinal, still contemporary, rooted in the sensitivity of the time, put his stamp on the project of course. AN ECHO TO A DEAF-MUTE INSTITUTION
For the redevelopment project of the former Catholic Institution for the Deaf and Mute, located on Saint-Laurent, Aurèle Cardinal and his team became masters in the art of making something new out of something old. The former deaf-mute institution was converted into condos. What a beautiful new life for this heritage building. The facade kept its staircase and columns. Also, it was agreed that no construction would take place on the land in front of the building which contained concrete spaces, fortunately, greened by Cardinal’s team’s intervention. Say it proud, say it loud!A stone’s throw from Jarry Park, it’s an island of freshness in the hubbub of the city. ONE TOWER, THE CANADIANS TOWER
THE MIL CAMPUS, BACK TO BASICS
Aurèle has produced several master plans for institutional complexes, such as the EcoCampus Hubert Reeves in 2011, the Concordia
district in 2006 and the Outremont Campus for the Université de Montréal in 2008. By redeveloping the former Outremont rail yard according to sustainable development principles, the MIL campus has not only revitalized a disused industrial area by giving it a new vocation, but is opening its doors wide to the entire community. The reconfiguration of the land amazes. A nod to an innovative aspect… Urban agriculture occupies an important place on the site and several cultural and scientific activities intended for the general public are frequently held. A return to basics as in the time of the farm that is this campus development plan designed by the Cardinal Hardy Group and Provencher_Roy.
CAMPUS OUTREMONT, BY CARDINAL-HARDY ARCHITECTES, 2006-2007
Straddling the river and the mountains, the Tour des Canadiens is a true visual landmark, with its slender profile and theatrical architecture. It is a 167-meter skyscraper that spreads its high-end character over 52 floors on avenue des Canadiens-de-Montréal, in the heart of the action of the tricolor hockey team. Aurèle’s fundamental concern here was to align the tower North-South to protect the perspectives and clear all views towards both the mountain and the river … one of the very main principles of implementation of the urban plan that Aurèle defended throughout his life.
20,000 HOUSING PROJECT : BOTTOM IMAGE: AURÈLE CARDINAL (TOP ROW, 2ND PERSON FROM LEFT) AND CARDINAL-HARDY CO-FOUNDER AND PARTNER MICHEL HARDY (3RD PERSON FROM LEFT). .
A PROFESSION + A PASSION = A TEACHER
Let us remember that in 1986, Aurèle founded Cardinal-Hardy architectes with his partner and accomplice Michel Hardy. The dynamic duo grew to welcome four partners, Roch Cayouette, architect, Josée Bérubé, architect, Claude Jean, architect, and Michel Dufresne, urban planner who eventually parted ways in 2011. Through all of this, Aurèle Cardinal, passionate about his profession, trained a whole generation of urban designers during his thirty years of teaching at the Faculty of Planning at the Université de Montréal, and as a visiting professor at universities at Harvard and Columbia in the United States, as well as at the School of Architecture and the Institut d’urbanisme in Paris. IN HIS BACKPACK
You will find… Tadao Andō, a Japanese architect, known for his extensive work with concrete and light… his architectural approach strives to address modern architecture’s indifference to place or place of construction, using local cultural elements to enrich the meanings of architecture. Sounds familiar? Andrée Putman for she is atypical and free. We know and we applaud her for it: she never stopped, throughout her career, to imagine bridges, gaps, connections
between the arts, fashion and design. And the Beatles for the heart and soul of it all! ONE WHOLE, ON A HUMAN SCALE
I have in front of me a robust man with sparkling eyes ready to now leave his urban footprint in the suburban Saint-Lambert of tomorrow… what can I say! Except that, of Aurèle Cardinal, we can only highlight his career in architecture and urban planning and urban design and applaud the essential contribution of a man devoted to the development of a Montreal on a human scale. A road well traveled! At 70, Aurèle takes up the torch within the young cohort of 30 employees, architects, urban designers and interior designers that make up the talented Humà Design + Architecture team in order to pass on his knowledge. He thus adapts to a new generation to whom he instills his knowledge, his reflections on the city, on urban ecology and on circular economies. N.B.: Should I add that for every comment or two, Aurèle’s chips in with a sincere nod to his team’s input and work? As he should! His team shines! His copilot? The brilliant, bubbly, creative and passionate Stéphanie Cardinal, co-head of Humà and daughter to Aurèle. Per tutto il tempo!
