HARVARD’S FIRST LATINA STUDENT PAPER PRESIDENT RAQUEL CORONELL URIBE HAS BEEN NAMED THE NEW LEADER OF THE HARVARD CRIMSON, THE OLDEST COLLEGE PAPER IN THE NATION.

I
n January 2022, Raquel Coronell Uribe will officially become the Harvard Crimson’s first Latinx president. The Harvard Crimson is the oldest daily college newspaper in the United States. Founded in 1873, the Harvard Crimson is the Ivy League university’s weekly student newspaper. “It’s a huge honor,” Coronell Uribe told NPR. “Even if it took 148 years, I’m thrilled that I get to be in the position to be that first person.” While she is honored to have the distinction of being the first Latinx president, she is also making sure others are able to follow in her footsteps. “I really want to make sure that this door remains open for other people,” she told NBC News. Coronell Uribe is a history and literature major student at Harvard, and currently covers police accountability as a reporter for The Crimson. She also leads Crimson’s internal Latinx affinity group.
A FAMILY OF JOURNALISTS
The journalism profession runs in Coronell Uribe’s family. Both of her parents are well-known journalists from Colombia — her father, Daniel Coronell, an investigative journalist who later became president of Univision News; and her mother, María

ENGLISH Cristina Uribe, a TV news anchor. The family fled the South American country when she was 6, after receiving death threats in response to her father’s investigative reporting. Seeing how many people often hide from the truth inspired Coronell Uribe to pursue a journalism career even more. “I can’t think of something more impactful than providing vital information to the people around you and allowing them to make informed and better decisions,” she said.

n enero de 2022, Raquel Coronell Uribe se convertirá oficialmente en la primera presidenta latina del Harvard Crimson. El Harvard Crimson es el periódico universitario más antiguo de Estados Unidos. Fundado en 1873, el Harvard Crimson es el periódico semanal de los estudiantes de la Ivy League. “Es un gran honor”, dijo Coronell Uribe a NPR. “Aunque haya tardado 148 años, estoy encantada de poder estar en la posición de ser esa primera persona”. Coronell Uribe es estudiante de historia y literatura en Harvard, y actualmente trabaja como reportera para Crimson cubriendo temas de responsabilidad policial. También lidera el grupo de afinidad Latinx del periódico.
UNA FAMILIA DE PERIODISTAS
La profesión de periodista le viene de familia a Coronell Uribe. Sus dos padres son conocidos periodistas colombianos: su padre, Daniel Coronell, periodista de investigación que luego fue presidente de Univisión Noticias, y su madre, María Cristina Uribe, presentadora de noticias de televisión. La familia huyó del país sudamericano cuando ella tenía 6 años, tras recibir amenazas de muerte en respuesta a los reportajes de investigación de su padre. Ver cómo mucha gente se esconde de la verdad inspiró a Coronell Uribe a seguir la carrera de periodismo. “No puedo pensar en algo más impactante que proporcionar información vital a la gente que te rodea y permitirles tomar decisiones informadas y mejores”, explicó.

La representación latina es muy escasa en las redacciones estudiantiles de todo el país. Un estudio reciente destaca 75 redacciones que fueron premiadas tanto por la Asso-
