WITH CHEVELLE & CODE ORANGE FORD CENTER / MARCH 8 / 6:30 P.M.

Nü metal masters returning to Evansville with two very special guests in tow Two years after joining forces with Breaking Benjamin for a co-headlining tour that just managed to squeeze in a stop at the Ford Center prior to lockdown, the biggest name in nü metal returns in support of Requiem, Korn's 14th studio album. And while the California-based band known for groundbreaking, relentlessly heavy hits like "Freak on a Leash," "Falling Away from Me" and "A.D.I.D.A.S." gets sole top billing this time around, they're bringing along two very special guests to sweeten the deal: Chevelle and Code Orange. The former, a multi-platinum hard rock trio from the Midwest, has charted numerous singles, including "Send the Pain Below," "Letter from a Thief" and "Hats Off to the Bull"; the latter, meanwhile, is a long-running metalcore band from Pittsburgh that tears it up every time they take the stage - the perfect opener for this highly-anticipated show. In addition to performing all of their biggest songs and fan favorites, Korn is sure to include several cuts from the new album which has received widespread acclaim. Lead single "Start the Healing" - which dropped back in November - demonstrates that even three decades in, these guys haven't lost a step, still capable of conjuring pummeling riffs that singular vocalist Jonathan Davis spews, scats and croons over in equal measure. Simply put, Korn is in a class of their own both in the studio and especially on stage so don't miss their welcome return to the Ford Center! For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

The trajectory of your life changed so dramatically - from rags to riches, in a

It's definitely been a rollercoaster. Never

you know?

I think being in my mid-forties definitely... it doesn't take much to remind you where you've been, you know, and what you've gone through to keep you humble. And so I think 2020 did that for a lot of people - it doesn't matter where you're at in your career or what you're doing in life. When you can't go out and do those things, you worry that people are going to forget about you, they're going to forget about your songs. [You have to try to] figure out how to keep it going. And I think that put it in perspective for me - just how quickly it could be here and be gone. And so I just live every day being grateful for what I have and what God's doing in my life. Fans often comment that your music has

changed their life in some meaningful way.

Surely that's amazing to hear but do you find that burdensome at all?

Well, I mean at the end of the day, it's not anything that I'm doing. This is all...it's all God. He's the one that's changed my life; He's the one that changes people's lives. I get to meet people and they're like, 'Man, your song changed my life; your music changed my life

As you can see by that incredible list, Williams truly is the "Maestro of the Movies," having provided the soundtracks to some of the biggest blockbusters in the history of cinema. Be sure to get your ticket for what promises to be a memorable Pops Series performance.

WINDBORNE'S THE MUSIC OF QUEEN Victory Theatre / April 2 / 7 P.M.

BRIAN REGAN VICTORY THEATRE / MARCH 27 / 7:30 P.M.

Fan favorite standup comic still killing it 30 years after Tonight Show debut With nary a curse word in his entire act, Brian Regan has carved out one of the most successful careers of any standup comic in history. His everyman persona, his wry take on everyday life - it all makes the Florida native entirely relatable to people of all ages and backgrounds. So it's no wonder that Regan's become a fan favorite in the world of comedy. And he keeps winning over new converts thanks to his dedicated touring schedule. The pandemic lockdown period excepted, Regan regularly performs 100 shows a year. You can do the math; he's taking the stage every few days or so which means that his set is honed to perfection and he delivers his jokes with laser precision every time. Regan first made waves as a standup when he appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson back in 1991. And while he's spent most of his entertainment career making people laugh in clubs and theaters, he's also branched out into TV, having starred in the dark comedy series Loudermilk since 2017; in fact, the show's creator, Peter Farrelly, called Regan's work on the show "some of the best acting on television." As former SNL player Andy Samberg used to say while channeling Nicholas Cage, "that's high praise." Regan has also appeared in two episodes of Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, starred in the first live broadcast of a standup special in Comedy Central's history and created his own Netflix series, Stand Up and Away! But unexpectedly, Santana would experience his greatest chart success the year after being inducted. 1999's Supernatural, a collaborative project that paired the ever-adventurous guitarist with some of the top hitmakers of the day, would go on to sell upwards of 15 million copies thanks to two worldwide number one singles, "Smooth" and "Maria Maria." Remarkably, 30 years after making a

MORE splash at Woodstock, Santana was the biggest musician on the planet - yet he never lost his drive to push the envelope. While further mainstream success followed, Santana also boldly branched out with the likes of 2014's Corazón - his first-ever Spanish language album - and 2019's Africa Speaks which eschewed traditional song structure in favor of musical exploration.

his is a place I’ve seen a lot of people mention to me for a review. I love some Hibachi and sushi so my wife and I had to

check it out. I will say I didn’t get any ramen because it’s just so hard to pass up some hibachi food, but I had their ramen back when they were part of the China Bistro and really enjoyed it! This place is new and looks like it! It is just clean as can be and looks very modern. The decor is extremely warm and inviting. I’m so happy that a great local restaurant picked up this spot because it’s a great location right off the Lloyd Expressway. When we came in we decided to go with a table instead of the grill just so we could enjoy and review the place to ourselves. Service was everything you would hope it would be at any restaurant you pick, and nowadays that goes quite a long way! In order to give it a fair shot, we decided to try a couple different sushi rolls and each got a hibachi lunch plate. I will say that it seems like they have a pretty large menu for a hibachi place but I guess that is because they also

specialize in ramen, which is great during these colder months of the year. For our meal, we ordered two similar sushi rolls; mine was just a Valentine's Day special and came as a pink roll shaped into a heart (nice touch by the sushi chef). My wife ordered the steak hibachi

and I had the calamari. The sushi was good, not great, but I think I ordered one that would probably be that way anywhere I went. Usually I stick to a handful of sushi flavors, but today I tried to venture out more, so that was my mistake. The salads were also very good; the dressing had a very slight hint of sweetness to it, but it didn’t overpower anything in the bowl. It’s up there as one of my top 5 dressings on a salad! I will say the calamari was cooked very well, which is hit or miss at a lot of places because it gets very chewy fast if overcooked even slightly. There was a beautiful char on it while also remaining soft as could be when biting through it. The light seasonings on it gave it a burst of flavor - I just wish they would have finished it with a drizzle of lemon to go that extra step in bringing out the flavors of the calamari. Don’t get me wrong, this calamari was still really good and tender! As for the steak, to me, it lacked a lot of seasoning in the crust. I know with hibachi a lot of the flavors are from blending the protein, rice, and veggies together, but it just seemed like a bland steak thrown on the plate. I don’t know if this is the norm or if it was just that our steak was under-seasoned before it met the grill. Either way, I hope next time they load that puppy up with some seasonings! The rice and veggies were all expertly cooked and delectable, including some of the best mushrooms I’ve had in quite some time! As far as hibachi goes, I’d put this place in second after Roppongi. I used to have that spot reserved by Ninki, but it was overtaken on this day. All are still great choices and you can’t go wrong with any of them!

IT'S ALL RELATIVE: LONG-DEFUNCT LOCAL BAND REUNITING FOR BIG SHOW THIS MONTH AT BOKEH LOUNGE

20

years is a long time between rehearsals - and yet, when Mike Mitchell and Nick Hamilton got together in a room some

weeks back to start going over songs they previously performed in Nobody's Cousin - one of the biggest bands in the tri-state from 1996-2002 - it felt just like the old days. "It's like we never stopped," Mitchell says with more than a hint of wonderment. Whether revisiting 90's-era covers or original material from Relative, the EP the guys recorded with drummer Corey Overby, the music just flowed - muscle memory took over, erasing the two-decade layoff in a matter of minutes. Which only reinforced their decision to get back up on stage and do it all again this month at Bokeh Lounge. In actuality, it's a show that's been a long time coming, though Mitchell, in particular, was hesitant to revisit the past, despite the frequent prodding of Bokeh GM Jessica Nuffer - whom he lovingly refers to as "Flo" from the 70's sitcom Alice - and other longtime fans of the band around town. But ultimately, he gave in. "We're getting older so I thought let's just do it - I just

Not considering the musical pedigrees of Hamilton, Mitchell and Overby - all of whom have continued to make their mark in the local scene post-Nobody's Cousin in groups like McFly!, The BackBeats, Epic and Torpedo Vegas. But it's certainly worth looking back at how it all began for these three talented friends. It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time many moons ago when the majority of venues - like Fast Eddy's, Harpole's, Duck Inn and Ginny's - welcomed

But the trio eventually ran out of gas in 2002 and called it a day - and pretty much splintered, musically speaking. "It's funny because even when we were split apart we would see each other throughout the years but we never played together - except Nick and Mike had an acoustic three-piece for awhile," Overby says. But twenty years on, Nobody's Cousin is set to turn back the clock. And thanks to an expanded lineup including keyboardist Bill Sievern and bassist Dave Bennett, this longawaited reunion show promises some real musical treats. "It gives us the opportunity to play songs that we couldn't play before," Hamilton explains, "songs like "Iris," "In the Meantime" and "No More Tears." TRUE CRIME JUNKIE WITH JOHNNY FLETCHER

UNSOLVED NO MORE

R

ather than focus on a specific case this month, I'd like to take this opportunity to highlight a true crime

PICTURED: COLD CASE SPECIALIST KEN MAINS

YouTube channel that I recently discovered: Unsolved No More starring world-class detective and cold case specialist Ken Mains. Now, let me preface this by saying that I have spent many an hour listening to any number of podcasts that cover high profile cases - the great majority of which are helmed by regular folks with no formal background in criminality; like me, they're just simply fascinated by it all. And that's what makes Unsolved No More stand out - Mains actually knows what the heck he's talking about and doesn't waste any time blabbering on about what he did last weekend or what have you. Objectively, he takes you through the case step by step; he discusses the evidence piece by piece; and finally, Mains gives his opinion regarding the outcome - or lack of an outcome as in the infamous JonBenét Ramsey case, for instance. It all makes for a very compelling, no-nonsense approach. Perhaps best of all, Mains - a Marine Corps veteran - occasionally addresses the comments he receives after posting a video and amusingly calls out ill-informed subscribers that question his credentials and other such silly things. It's just nice to see someone push back on the idiocy of keyboard warriors once in a while. Speaking of the JonBenét case, Mains delved into that mind-bending mystery with a thought-provoking 90-minute deep dive that

left him pondering two pieces of evidence in particular - one that points to an intruder committing the murder and one that points to an inside job. And yet neither piece of evidence in question is the notorious threepage ransom note that so many detectives have fixated on and tried to tie to mother Patsy Ramsey. I'd say more but I think it's best if you just check out the episode for yourself. However, let me note that I pretty much agree with Mains' take for what it's worth. The same can be said for his lengthy breakdown of the West Memphis 3 case and the Steven Avery saga which drew widespread interest thanks to the hugely popular Making a Murderer documentary. With this latter case, Mains' experience and objectivity really shine seeing

Completely understandable, of course, but it's endlessly interesting to hear a seasoned detective go through all the evidence with a detached view and the ultimate goal of getting to the truth no matter where it may lead. If you're interested in true crime, I highly recommend subscribing to Unsolved No More on YouTube. You can easily kill several hours, so to speak, listening to Mains unravel some of the biggest cases of all-time. Enjoy!

2021, GRANTED approved 30 Wishes to area children and expects to grant over 35 Wishes this year. “To help fund the growing demand for our services, we are excited to be partnering with Over The Edge and CenterPoint Energy to put on Evansville’s first urban rappelling event taking place on Saturday, April 30th,” said GRANTED board member Jeff Purdue. “If you crave adventure and are passionate about helping area children, you can sign up, as an individual or team, to rappel down the 9-story CenterPoint Energy building in downtown Evansville. If rappelling down a 9-story building is not for you, you can also contribute to help fund GRANTED Wish children who want to rappel.” Those who accept the challenge to go OVER THE EDGE for GRANTED, commit to raising a minimum of $1,000 for GRANTED. GRANTED

There are also corporate sponsorship opportunities being led by GRANTED board member Matt Folz. “This event will be transformative for our small, local organization in a few different ways,” said Susan. “Funding received will help to grant many more Wishes to deserving children, and allow for more programming to continue to serve GRANTED families. Many families of the children who qualify for our services don’t realize this is available to them. The ultimate success of this event will be the increased impact on our community’s most vulnerable with a record number of Wishes being provided to children.” These Wishes are life-changing for children and their families. With

FREDDIE BOURNE

BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS, I WILL BE BACK IN THERAPY started working together, I know that I need to seek someone that has no idea who I am to have a fair shot at finally getting better, especially when admitting the hard truths to myself.

In a perfect world, yes. Most of the content that I put up for display would be things that I would have talked about with my therapist for the past six or so years. However, working with a therapist that is in a different state with an hour time difference and losing track of my schedule on a minute-by-minute basis, it was for the best to seek something that I could physically attend to.

For years, I’ve told people that the anxiety and depression have stemmed more from the sudden passing of my mother and grandmother. Reality’s struck each year making me deal with the underlying truth that the anxiety and depression have been with me all along and the traumatic experiences simply brought everything to the forefront.

I’m not bashing my previous therapist in any way. They were incredibly kind, supportive and were one of the people that encouraged me to find my love in music and writing. Hell, I even played a small half hour set for him during one of our sessions and didn’t have to pay.

My panic and worry have been seeping into so many parts of my well-being where even doing everything I want and love on my own terms still doesn’t bring me joy. As much as I want to follow the mantra “it is what it is,” my brain and my body need to know what that “it” is, to know “why” it is what it is.

But, he knew about me. He knew enough about my history considering he saw my father and stepmother during their troubling times and was aware of their vices. While he didn’t know me personally until we

SOFT CELL Happiness Not Included BMG A few years back, UK synth-pop duo Soft Cell sold-out the O2 Arena in London for a farewell concert celebrating 40 years together. It was meant to be the definitive end to a remarkable career dotted with major highs - i.e., the still-popular "Tainted Love" - and long stretches of inactivity. But never say never, of course. Vocalist Marc Almond and keyboardist Dave Ball, perhaps one of the most unlikely pairings in music history, not only reconvened post-"farewell" to tour the 40th anniversary of their iconic debut album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, they got the creative bug again. Impressively, this latest collection is a reminder why Soft Cell stand as one of the great synth-pop acts of all-time, containing all the hallmarks of their best work - it's cynically dark and bruising yet equally melodic and emotionally-charged. - Johnny Fletcher

coast feel that really sets the mood as JT Thomas lays down great guitar work. “Havin’ a Party” features Chad Rupp singing about wanting to gather with friends for a good time after a long day of work. The title track talks about wanting to live a simple life of solitude. “Rain Checkin’” features a guest appearance from Lloyd Jones who serves up some stellar guitar playing accompanied by funky bass lines from Timmer Blakely and horns from Chris Mercer and Joe McCarthy. Chandler Bowerman's solid drumming complements Mercer and McCarthy’s horns on “It’s a Sin.” “Something Wicked This Way Comes” features heavy guitar from Rupp along with great harmonica playing and vocals from special guest Johnny Wheels. A jazzy, slowed down version of Steve Miller Band’s “Rock’n Me” is driven by excellent piano playing from Samuel Gendler. “Next to You” offers heavy instrumentation and melancholy lyrics about wanting to remain close to someone you love. The classic feel and phenomenal horn playing on “Sweet Lovin’ Daddy” will get toes tapping. .- Paul Bragin

MARCH BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. BELL'S LO SUN

MYRIAD ELEPHANT DASH

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

This stout pours black and makes an ample caramel colored head, with a mesmerizing cascade of bubbles. There are strong notes of coffee on the nose. The coffee continues onto the palate and has a sweet, creamy finish. If you are a fan of a sweet stout, this one will not disappoint - and neither will the 7.2% ABV.

PAUL BRAGIN - 5

A thick tan head grows on this opaque stout and dissipates gradually. Sweetness from the roasted malt dominates the scent. More malt sweetness continues with the first taste, followed by roasted malt in the finish. People who enjoy stouts will want to drink this Evansville offering. Pair it with a charcuterie tray, roasted meats, your favorite chocolate desserts or add a scoop of your favorite ice cream to the beer for an adult float.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

I would almost gave this milk stout a five but I leave that number to a select few. I truly love beers you can't see through. It has an ABV of 7.2% and comes in a 16oz can. I like the rich smooth flavors and I pick up a hint of brown sugar - but not much. I enjoy the coffee and chocolate flavors, too. And it is local! Good job, Myriad.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25

Pours slightly hazy and golden with a quickly disappearing head. This has aromas of citrus on the nose. On the palate is a hint of citrus, a subtle hop bitterness, and light maltiness. Very balanced and very drinkable. Another winner for the light craft beer market with 110 calories and 4% ABV.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5

A thick white head rests on this wheat beer when poured into a wheat beer glass and evaporates slowly. A burst of wheat fills the nose, followed by the faint presence of fruity hop aromas. Carbonation hits the tongue with the first taste, followed by crisp wheat flavor. The combination of light body and low alcohol makes this wheat beer a great choice. Pair it with brunch, baked fish, a hamburger, spicy ramen or avocado toast.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a hazy, golden-colored beer. It's a low-calorie beer of 110 calories. A Blue Moon has 170. Since it's a light beer, it's a little weak on the wheat flavor but I sort of expected that. It also has an ABV of 4% so this would be more of a summer beer to drink outside. It's sessionable and has a light hops flavor but not much.

NEW BELGIUM VOODOO RANGER AGENT 77 IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25

This pours a hazy yellow with very little head. On the nose you find floral notes, grapefruit and maybe a hint of stone fruit. On the palate the grapefruit comes through, with a hint of lemon. The bitterness is a little more pronounced, as one would expect from an IPA. On the finish I noticed a touch of melon as well. At 7.7% ABV, this is not a sessionable beer, but worth having at least one

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A substantial white head forms on this cloudy IPA and takes time to disappear. A good amount of citrus from the hops controls the scent profile. More citrus comes through with the tasting, followed by hop bitterness and additional citrus in the long finish. IPA aficionados will want to drink this. Pair it with fish and salads that are heavy on citrus flavors, spicy foods or cheeses such as pepper jack, Gorgonzola, Limburger or Cheddar.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a slightly hazy yellow beer with an ABV of 7.7%. I enjoy the citrus flavors. This is very drinkable - I have a feeling it might sneak up on you. It does have the bitterness I find with most IPAs but it's not overbearing. There aren't many New Belgium beers I don't like and this one didn't disappoint.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25 LAGUNITAS DAYTIME IPA

This pours light golden and clear, with a thin white head. Tropical notes on the nose give way to a light body with subtle hints of grapefruit on the palate. Fairly high carbonation lightens the body even more, and it finishes with just a touch of hoppy bitterness. At 98 calories, 3 carbs and 4% ABV, this is a great example of a light IPA. Easy drinking and refreshing.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A decent white head tops this golden colored IPA. Pine and citrus notes in the hops flood the nostrils. The hop flavors remain while drinking the beer, with the citrus flavors becoming more prominent

in the extended finish. The slightly lower alcohol content makes this beer a good option for drinking several. Pair it with Asian cuisines, salads or a variety of cheeses like Camembert, Asiago or feta.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This is a clear yellow beer with decent carbonation. It has a little more bitterness than the Bell’s. I actually didn’t really care for it on the first sip but the more I drank, the more I enjoyed it. It has an ABV of 4% and 98 calories. Despite my first impression, I still think it's a solid beer in terms of a “light” beer.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
