KENTUCKY-BORN COMEDIAN TALKS MAKING THE JUMP FROM COP TO STAND-UP COMIC, DEALING WITH UNRULY PATRONS, ADVICE FOR THE UNFUNNY AND MORE
B
y his own admission, he'll forever be known as the "Ex-cop on the Bob & Tom Show" - but comedian Mike Armstrong wouldn't have it any other way. In fact, the Kentucky native makes the sign
of the cross every time he mentions the popular radio hosts because their unwavering support has played a big part in his success. Still, Armstrong wasn't doing too bad on his own in the early days after leaving the police force to pursue a career in comedy, quickly making the jump from open mics to high-profile gigs and building a very loyal fanbase in the process - something he credits, at least partially, to his clean approach to standup, meaning there's no cursing, no politics and no religion. "I don't want anybody to go home and debate anything I say," Armstrong explains. For sure, his shows are a welcome break from all the white noise out there, an evening that the whole family can enjoy - a rarity in 2022. Everyone can relate to Armstrong's feel-good brand of humor and crowds never tire of hearing about his hilarious experiences on the beat in Kentucky. Indeed, as he gleefully recounts onstage, no one was safe from the madcap cop who never wrote tickets and loved to pull pranks on citizens and criminals alike. Basically, Armstrong was meant for comedy - just not to maintain peace and order.

And then one time I was in South Dakota and I got fans that are two Army rangers.
Did you have any reservations about leaving the police force to make a go at a career in comedy? After all, cops make a decent salary - and the life of a stand-up comic can be challenging, to say the least. I always felt that I was the best at whatever I did or I wouldn't do it. When I first started doing open mics, nobody knew I was a cop or nothing. Showtime saw me and put me on Showtime - and I'd only been doing it for six months. Then all of a sudden Crook & Chase said, 'Hey, on your days off can you come down here and open?' and then I got brought to the couch. It was just one thing after another - and then Bob & Tom picked me up. I have to make the sign of the cross every time I say their names because they picked me up and Bob said... I told him I was thinking about quitting [comedy] and he said, 'Well, we'll do our best to make you famous.' Now everybody knows me as the "Ex-cop on the Bob & Tom Show," you know? It doesn't

the Mummies bring the funk like nobody's business. Their incredibly tight grooves and tongue-in-cheek lyrics have made them a Bob & Tom Show favorite and garnered the band opening slots for legends like P-Funk, Al Green and Cheap Trick - even a performance at the Super Bowl Village. Indeed, such is the intensity of HCTM's stage show that even the most rhythmchallenged audiences feel compelled to dance their butts off, unable to stay seated for a second of this supergroup's outrageously electric set. Not bad for a band that was reportedly "cursed after deflowering a great Pharaoh's daughter." HCTM are currently putting the finishing touches on a live performance Blu-ray and look to release a

WHAT'SCOOKIN' WITH MATT LAINE
THE TAQUERIA COMPANY 2519 N. FIRST AVE. EVANSVILLE, IN
O
When you walk into the First Avenue location of The Taqueria Company, the menu and layout of the place can be a bit overwhelming. They have two separate menus from basically two different restaurants all in one
space (I will focus on the Taqueria side of things in this review). So, on your first few visits, be sure to look at the menu ahead of time so you know what to expect and you don’t get caught, like I did, staring at the menu like a deer in headlights. I would also suggest asking for suggestions if you have questions about the menu; they do a great job helping you find something you will enjoy and giving you the right “addons” to your selection. I say add-ons because once you choose your main dish - I’ll just say a burrito for the sake of the review - you then choose everything you want to put inside the burrito. I would say go for broke and load up on whatever you like so you’re getting the most bang for your buck! I say this because this place also has some crazy good prices, at least in my opinion. The big burrito and chips/salsa I got was only about $9, and I couldn’t even finish it all. It’s crazy to think that something made from scratch, besides the tortilla (I think they started the company making those from scratch as well), could be so cheap. When I talked to the owner about it, he said it was because he didn’t want to push customers away, which is highly commendable during this trying period of inflation and other economic challenges. We can all appreciate saving a few dollars when we dine out these days.

freshly made, and each has a different flavor profile. I have tried all three and have to say that the medium salsa has, in my opinion, the best balance of flavor and heat. The hot salsa is a bit too much for my tastes, but if you're down for some serious heat, more power to you! I also tried my first birria taco here and have to say they live up to the hype. They are quite messy, but in the words of American restaurateur Guy Fieri, the flavors are just "outof-bounds." As someone who isn’t shy of a flavor bomb, I recommend pouring some of the medium salsa on the birria taco and then dipping it into the marinade; that just takes it all up to another level. I also opted for a taco salad and have to say it, too, was above and beyond what I would expect from a small taco shop. Everything they are doing seems to be on point, and that should only keep them on the rise. Don’t miss any chance you have to try out the amazing food

single, "Miss Cocaine"
the span of the opening title track, there's mournful piano, melodic, staccato guitar, a wall of distortion, machine-gun riffing and frenetic drumming - not to mention several time signature shifts. Remarkably, Morrow manages to weave memorable hooks into the mix, veering from a crystal-clear vocal tone to full-throated fury - often from one measure to the next. But it has to be said that Wade, Casey, Cochrane and VanBibber have provided their singer with the most intricate, sophisticated soundtrack in the band's history - a soundtrack clearly deserving of a multi-media presentation. Into the fall, AI will be working with videographer Benji Koelling to create a cinematic interpretation of Sundowner with an eye on releasing the entire musical and visual project together before the end of the year. In the meantime, you can catch the band live at Stage Two on August 12 alongside Attila, Shockwave Theory and A Brighter End. *A reminder to stay tuned for the debut of lead single
"Sundowner" on 9/2. As with the other two pieces, the
vocals and drums were recorded by Steve Tyner at Black Cat Recording who also mixed and mastered the project. For more info, follow The Alpha Incident on Facebook.

Still, Unbelievable! - six urgent songs in 10 minutes - wouldn't see an official release until just over a month ago. But the wait was clearly worth it. As advertised, the EP harkens back to the glory days of hardcore punk, echoing the likes of Bad Brains, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys and Minor Threat. It goes by quick, sure, but it's a rush. In keeping with the abbreviated yet declamatory nature of the music, Johnson's approach to the lyrics is no-nonsense: "Keep it simple, just say it." "Flow," for instance, alludes to that coveted sweet-spot we occasionally find ourselves in where everything just gels. "Road," meanwhile, is about "feeling like you're always moving, that you're not grounded." Then there's "Escalate" which addresses the increase in social problems. The most poetic song of the bunch, "Rose" champions the less fortunate. "Nasty," however, is completely debased - an admission from Johnson that he's, well, nasty. That leaves "Anything (You Want)," the most lyrically complex tune of the bunch. "It's got the punk ethos of "do what you want" but it's also a message from society to not cross certain lines," Johnson expands. Don't hold your breath for a live show to promote Unbelievable! anytime soon. As Johnson notes, "the only way we'll play Evansville again is if we can get the mayor to come to our show - that means they will be guaranteed to lose their next election." But don't despair; Wallwork emphatically states that "God2 will rise again!" - and he kind of seems like he means it. Unbelievable! is available at god2theband@bandcamp.com.

Together, they can whip up an absolute frenzy, effortlessly covering many of the pillars of the southern rock and classic rock genres - legendary acts like the Allman Brothers Band, The Band, Deep Purple, Gov't Mule and more. Ultimately, though, the plan for Stackin' Eights was to record original material - a process kickstarted by Lee, a Florida transplant, who serves as the band's main creative force. "I write all the lyrics and basic ideas and then we all transform what I come up with into a Stackin' Eights sound," he explains. That collaborative approach comes across loud and clear on Rock n Roll Southern Soul, a terrifically gritty 4-track EP recently released to announce the group's next phase which also includes a full-length album scheduled to drop in the fall. TRI-STATE HORRORSCOPES NO MATTER YOUR ASTROLOGICAL SIGN, THINGS AREN'T EXACTLY LOOKING UP THIS MONTH
GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20)
Totally late to the party, you will try to convince everyone that you're a huge fan of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" and always have been. Nice try. CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22)
You will be offered an obscene amount of money to join the controversial LIV golf tour but then realize you'll have to cozy up to the likes of d-bags Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed for the next year. Suddenly you'll "find" some spare change under the couch cushions to pay the bills and politely decline. Too late - the Saudis already signed your stupid ass up and now own you. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22)
This month you will once again be blamed for inflation and high gas prices everywhere you go and be even more unpopular. At least you'll be prepared for all the ass-kickings this time.
VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sep 22)
You will be forced to eat every meal with Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg and tasked with explaining their strangely marketable chemistry. Good luck with that.
LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22)
You will wake up in an alternate reality where President Matthew McConaughey presides over the country. At first everything will be alright, alright, alright, but you'll quickly grow tired of his surfer-dude persona and regret not voting for John Travolta.

NEWS4U AUGUST 2022 | ENTERTAINMENT SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21)
You will wake up in an alternate reality where John Travolta presides over the country. He will repeatedly warn you and your fellow citizens to "watch the hair." Which, considering he's effectively bald, will baffle one and all. In the whole scheme of things, it won't be that bad. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21)
You, too, will wake up in an alternate reality where your svelte boyfriend has morphed into an aging, bare-chested Vladimir Putin on horseback. O, Bohze!! No need to translate.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19)
The only music you'll be permitted to listen to this month is deep cuts from Toad the Wet Sprocket. You'll quickly discover that, shockingly, their best songs are their singles - and even those aren't much to write home about. Invest in some ear plugs.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18)
Because you're associated with the water sign, you'll create what surely will be the next big thing in over-priced drinks, H2Joe - or water coffee. Totally clever and yet no one will give a crap. H2No, I don't think so. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20)
Because you're such a nerd, every chance you get in conversation, you'll remark, "It all sounds a little fishy to me" in a sly reference to your astrological sign. Grow the F up.
ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19)
Last month, you awoke to a world where you were the only non-influencer. Fat chance that you're even alive after experiencing something so traumatic so let's just skip ahead to the final sign.
TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20)
Sadly, you will be unable to keep up with the Kardashians this month and lose the will to live. Frankly, your lazy ass deserves it.

TRUE CRIME JUNKIE
PICTURED: ROSS HARRIS AND SON COOPER
WITH JOHNNY FLETCHER
THE CASE OF ROSS HARRIS Here's a case from 2014 that recently became headline news again after the Georgia Supreme Court overturned the conviction of Justin Ross Harris, a married father sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his 22-monthold son. The GSC, upon reviewing the case, determined that Harris deserved a new trial, deeming some of the evidence presented to the jury as prejudicial - evidence including the defendant's frequent philandering and "sexting" with other women. All of which the GSC ruled inadmissible and irrelevant to the murder charge. If you watch any true crime docs, then you know that prejudicial evidence is often a hotly-debated issue in court - and can often mean the difference between a conviction and an acquittal. Which is why this particular case makes for a fascinating study. As noted above, the events of this case took place in 2014 in Georgia. At the time, Ross Harris was a married father working a 9-5 job and living a seemingly normal existence. Reportedly, he doted on his young son Cooper whom he often dropped off at daycare on the way to the office - something he neglected to do on the morning of June 18. Instead, Harris, after making a fastfood breakfast stop, continued on to his place of employment with Cooper still buckled up in the backseat - quiet as a mouse, apparently. Harris then arrived at work and exited the vehicle, leaving his son locked up in an increasingly hot vehicle for hours. Interestingly, he returned to the car around lunchtime - a move caught on surveillance footage - and appeared to open the

driver's side door and reach in for something before shutting it and heading back to the building. Harris would later claim that he didn't see Cooper in the backseat; in fact, he swore that he had completely forgotten his son was with him at all that day. Sadly, Cooper perished in the sweltering heat of a vehicle with no air flow. When cops arrived, Harris was questioned extensively and ultimately charged with his son's murder - primarily as a result of discoveries made on his computer and phone that indicated he was not only a sex addict involved with a number of women outside of his marriage but had researched a childless existence. The prosecution surmised that Harris purposely left his son to die in the car that day so he could be free to live the life he truly wanted; Cooper, they argued, stood in the way. And the jury agreed, sentencing Harris to life in prison. But now he'll see a new day in court thanks to the decision of the GSC.

But somewhere right now people are pissed and making it known...in the streets. What continues to frustrate many of us - on both sides - is that the fringe elements of each political party seem to be calling the shots. More and more, a small percentage of people are speaking for the majority. And that's just not a viable way forward. By the way, when I say "fringe elements," I'm referring to the folks who are proposing policies that either have little support from the American people or simply no chance of ever passing (there is a difference, however subtle). Which is why we desperately need some middle ground - and soon. Interestingly, as it turns out, there's talk of a third party on the rise - the Moderate Party. I've just heard of it and watched an interview with one of its backers. Now, while much of the discussion seemed to make good sense, realistically (read: financially) there's little chance of such a venture making any headway. NEGRO JUSTICE Chosen Family Self-released Since 2018, Nashville rapper Christin Brown, who performs and records music under the moniker Negro Justice, has been honing his craft. With each single, collaboration, guest feature, and EP he’s released, Brown has proven time after time that he's one of the city’s best underground rappers. After four years of propping himself up in Music City, and becoming one of the most notable acts of the Six One Tribe collective, Brown delivers his debut full-length, Chosen Family. Stylistically, Negro Justice leans into the nerd-rap realm with many video game and Ninja Turtle references, perhaps most similar to Wu-Tang’s obsession with kung fu films. But don’t pigeonhole Brown as a nerd rapper. Chosen Family is a remarkable release, full of wit, charm, and character.- Russ Finn

AUGUST BEER REVIEWS
This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. SPATEN OKTOBERFEST
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5
Clear caramel color, with a thin, but lasting head. Toasted biscuit on the nose, with a light caramel sweetness on the palate. The hops balance the malt well, and it finishes smooth with just a touch of bitterness. A fan of this Oktoberfest style lager will enjoy the Spaten Oktoberfest.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5
A decent white head rests on this Oktoberfest style beer when poured into a traditional beer mug. The smell of the beer offers a lot of malt. The malt flavor remains with the tasting of the beer. This classic German offering will see a rise in popularity during the crisp months of autumn as the Oktoberfest holiday approaches. Pair it with classic German cuisine like sausages, sauerkraut, German fries or a dessert like apple strudel.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This is a clear amber beer with good carbonation. It has an ABV of 5.9% and it's very easy to drink. I'm not a fan of some Oktoberfests as they tend to have an odd, bitter flavor but I like this one. It's very malty and has a smooth finish. This is a solid and filling beer.
56 | AUGUST 2022
THBC MADAME BROWN ALE
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25
This brown ale is very dark, almost black, with a rich caramel-colored head. Bready on the nose, and complex on the palate. Slightly sweet and malty with notes of caramel and chocolate on the palate. This is a fine example of an English brown ale, full of rich flavors, but not too heavy, and finishing with just a touch of bitterness.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25
A thick tan head crowns this brown ale and dissipates slowly. The scent of malt dominates the nose. More malt comes through while drinking the beer and stays on the tongue during the finish as some hops also come through. People who like malty beers need to drink this. Pair it with a variety of foods like barbecue, cheeseburgers, roasted pork, smoked sausage, grilled salmon, aged Gouda cheese, caramel cheesecake or maple walnut cake.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This beer pours a dark brown color and appears a little cloudy, much darker than I expected. I like that it's in a pint can and is a regional beer. I can detect some coffee notes. I can also taste some chocolate and the toasted malts. I have enjoyed other THBC offerings and this one did not disappoint.

SUN KING KELLER HAZE
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4
This IPA pours a bright orange and is slightly hazy with a quickly dissipating white head. Notes of pineapple and tropical fruits on the nose, turning to citrusy notes of grapefruit on the palate. Fairly dry finish, with a slight bitterness. Very easy drinking hazy IPA.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thin white head tops this IPA and disappears quickly. The scent contains a burst of hops. A rush of carbonation hits the tongue first while sipping the beer, followed by a good balance of malt and hops in the finish. This beer, available year-round, remains a great choice during the summer. Pair it with your favorite spicy dishes or use it as an ingredient to make shortbread pineapple pastries.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This is a slightly hazy, straw-colored beer. Believe it or not, I'm not much of a Sun King fan but this one is pretty good. I like the nice hops flavor and its aroma. I can taste the average citrus flavors and some pine that are in most IPAs. So far, this is my favorite Sun King beer.
NEWS4U AUGUST 2022 | BEER REVIEWS
BRECKENRIDGE JUICE DROP HAZY IPA
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4
A vigorous pour of this ale reveals a golden hazy liquid and a thin white head. On the nose you’ll find distinct notes of tangerine. Citrus dominates the palate, and while there is little sweetness, the juiciness of the hops really shines. This hazy IPA finishes with a slightly more distinct bitterness than many of this style, which may appeal to fans of the more traditional IPAs.
PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5
A thick white head forms on this hazy IPA and never totally evaporates. A generous amount of citrus notes from the hops fills the nose. Likewise, the fruit flavors remain with the initial tasting and
stay during the extended finish. People who enjoy hoppy beers need to drink this. Pair it with fish tacos with pineapple salsa, spicy dishes like Indian curries, pad Thai or dessert like pineapple upside-down cake.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This beer pours a cloudy straw color and I can smell the hops right away. It has a rich hops flavor and it's easy to drink despite a healthy ABV of 7%. Unlike other IPAs, the hops flavor is there but it's not overpowering. It's actually pretty smooth and more in line with what I tend to enjoy.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

I am in the process of moving out of a large home with lots of big, heavy furniture - some of which is on the second floor. The second most common way you could be held liable in this scenario is under the theory of premise liability. Premise liability holds that you owe a duty to your invitees to maintain your home in a reasonably safe manner and free of unreasonably dangerous hazards. Here, for example, if your friend falls down your staircase and alleges that the staircase was not up-to-code and presented an unreasonable hazard you could be held liable for the resulting injuries and damages (medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, etc.). Again, the injured friend would have the burden of proof.
