Dear McNamara Team & Family,

McNamara is off to a terrific start this fall! We began the 2022-2023 school year by welcoming a full Class of 2026, and we maintained a waitlist throughout the spring semester into the summer. Our freshman welcome is one of my favorite days of the year, and this year was no exception. The excitement was palpable as our newest Mustangs began to learn the ropes and start their journey toward becoming empowered leaders. We also held a wonderful Freshman Family Cookout, with special thanks to our Campus Ministry Team.

Our most recent graduating seniors are in school and digging deep into their studies. We are thrilled to already be receiving updates from them. (Check out the photo of Talib Reddick ‘22, already making a splash at Brown University!)

Additionally, we are making great progress on our La Reine Science & Innovation Center! While we had hoped to already be in the building, we are now looking forward to completion by the end of this calendar year. Our furniture is in, and soon enough students will be preparing to finally start classroom time in our newest addition! We cannot wait to see everyone at our Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, March 18th.

McNamara is a school and a community full of stories. Whether it’s a great story from a classroom lesson, stories from our recent alums as they visit on college breaks, or stories of accomplishment from our alumni community, we want to hear them all. We want to connect with you, and show you the story of McNamara today. It’s an incredible one, each and every day.

As you flip through the pages of this Messenger, please take a moment to not only see the stories within it, but also the resources. You’ll see our Counseling department, Fine Arts, Athletics, and how you can make a meaningful difference by supporting the school. As a community, we celebrate together, we tell stories together, we problem-solve together, and we support one another as we build our family and build the future. I hope you will consider supporting Bishop McNamara in whatever way is most meaningful to you.

I look forward to seeing everyone throughout the fall and holiday seasons. Thank you for being Bishop McNamara.

CHAIRMAN’S LETTER

Greetings to All Members of the Bishop McNamara Family,

There is always something to see at McNamara. Each time I visit, the campus is alive with activity, whether it’s practices and games on the football field, rehearsals in our Fine Arts department, or an after-school study session. Each member of this team wears multiple hats, and I commend everyone from our faculty and staff on a strong start to the 2022-2023 school year. The word that immediately comes to mind as I look ahead to the year and think of McNamara is “belong”.

Our school is a Holy Cross school. Earlier this fall I spent time with the Brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross where we reflected on the important role the mission of our schools have in the communities we serve. Here at Bishop McNamara, our role in Prince George’s County is one of hope.

Our faculty and our students walk our halls each day filling their minds and educating their hearts, and our goal for them is to walk as a disciple with hope to bring. Whether it is providing groceries for the hungry, a space for local business owners to gather, or committing a full professional development day for our faculty to volunteer, I am proud to share that our Bishop McNamara spreads hope and belonging each and every day in our community.

This fall and into the winter, there are many opportunities for our McNamara community to come together. I ask for all members of the La Reine High School and Bishop McNamara alumni communities to not only come back and visit, but also to connect with us. One of the greatest aspects of Bishop McNamara is its incredible network - how excited everyone is to talk about it, and to come for the things they love to see: performances, competitions, award ceremonies, and how things have changed since they walked the halls of our beloved school.

Please consider supporting Bishop McNamara with your stories, your time, and your gift to the school to support our continued programming. We are always here to say hello, welcome you, and show you all the incredible things there are to see.

Thank you. I look forward to seeing you over the course of the fall and holiday season.

Respectfully, Robert N. Summers ’86

MUSTANG MOMENTS AC

Honoring 30 Years of Service to Catholic Education:

Peer Ministry Retreat: This summer, our 2022-2023 Peer Ministers had their annual retreat, which focused on the intersection of leadership and faith to prepare them for serving their community during their senior year. Congratulations and thank you to this year’s Peer Ministers for all of their work! n

Congratulations to Ms. Brenda Stephens and Mrs. Saiedeh Khalili! These incredible educators were honored for their 30 years of service to Catholic education by The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington Catholic Schools at their Opening of School Liturgy in August. His Eminence Wilton Cardinal Gregory celebrated the Mass, which was held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. n

Freshman Orientation: We were so excited to welcome the Class of 2026 as the 2022-2023 school year got underway! This year’s Freshman Orientation featured a scavenger hunt, team-building activities, mapping out class locations, and the first-ever Freshman Family Cookout, which was a huge success! We pray that the Class of 2026 has a strong start as they continue to embark on the Mustang experience. n

Honoring our Teachers of the Year: Let’s also celebrate Mr. Armani Mason-Callaway '09 and Mrs. Mary Nolte! Mr. Mason-Callaway, a teacher in our Technology and Engineering department, was recently named our Veteran Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Nolte, a teacher in our Theology department, was recently named our Novice Teacher of the Year. The Archdiocese of Washington Catholic Schools Office and the High School Principals’ Association present these awards each year. These outstanding faculty members were recognized in an article in the Catholic Standard and were presented with their awards at the High School Principals’ Association Professional Development Day in October. n

THE MUSTANG MESSENGER 6

National Dance Day: The Bishop McNamara Dance Program had an amazing time supporting National Dance Day in September. This year our dancers performed the National Dance Day routine and created a fun-filled dance routine for their friends at school. The performance was filmed in the main gym and can be viewed on our Instagram page (@bmhsmustang). n

In September, FADE Colloquium featured DuPont Brass. DuPont Brass is a one-of-a-kind, brass-driven supergroup from the D.C. Metropolitan Area. Originally composed of five music majors from Howard University trying to raise money for tuition during the Christmas season, they have grown to a 9-piece ensemble consisting of brass, a rhythm section, and vocalists. The performance was supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council. n

n

Mustangs Go Pink:

Bishop McNamara students, faculty, and staff held our annual “Mustangs Go Pink” fundraiser on Friday, October 7th. Everyone had fun dressing up in pink to support breast cancer research, and we were thrilled to raise over $5,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. n

String Quintet Reception: The Bishop McNamara String Quintet was honored to perform at Chevy Chase Country Club in September for a reception in honor of His Eminence Wilton Cardinal Gregory and the Consortium of Catholic Academies. n FADE Guest Artists: The Bishop McNamara Fine Arts Department was thrilled to welcome the following artists so far this year as part of their FADE Colloquium Series: In November, FADE Colloquium featured Bridging the Gap, the acclaimed string duo featuring violinist Peter Wilson and double bassist Aaron Clay. Hailed by The Washington Post for "... superior arrangements and uncommon musicianship," Bridging the Gap is a unique duo that offers a new voice to many musical styles by uniting the sounds of two bowed and bridged instruments not often heard together.

MUSTANG MOMENTS

Spirit Week: In October, as we prepared for the Homecoming football game, the BMHS Family participated in Spirit Week! This year’s themes were:

On Twin Day, there were a lot of Mr. Monahan's! Faculty and staff surprised Mr. Monahan, a teacher in our Theology department, by all wearing his signature "go-to" outfit. n

Back to School Liturgy:

It was an honor to welcome His Eminence Wilton Cardinal Gregory to our Back to School Liturgy on September 13th. Cardinal Gregory gave a wonderful homily to begin the school year and remind everyone that we are all children of God together. n

Spirit Week Liturgy:

During Spirit Week, students, faculty, and staff took a moment to center themselves in the presence of the Lord and celebrate the first all-school liturgy in the main gym since 2020. Msgr. Raymond East served as the celebrant, and the liturgy included a community meditation in memory of Father Everett Pearson, performed by our choir and American Sign Language III students. n

Thanksgiving Mass:

The Bishop McNamara community also celebrated Thanksgiving Mass in November. The Mass was celebrated by Father Phil Ilg from Holy Family Catholic Church and Deacon Keith Somerville ‘83. n

Why I Chose Bishop McNamara...

The BMHS Admissions Team is always so excited to welcome our prospective students and families to campus, especially in the fall and winter. This past school year, McNamara received over 600 applications and nearly 1,000 inquiries for 2022-2023, which made for a competitive admissions season!

Whether you’re just now learning about our school or you’ve been

hearing about the “magic of McNamara” for years, we are looking forward to helping you discover all that our Mustang family has to offer while assisting you in selecting the best high school for your student.

Here are reflections from current freshmen parents about why they chose Bishop McNamara.

“I chose Bishop McNamara for multiple reasons. A school where community and fellowship are paired with academic excellence and encouragement is the place for me. I found that in BMHS.

I am looking forward to being pushed and challenged in everything I do, trying new things, and being part of a great community.”

- Matthew Arzoumanian '26

“We love the inherent sense of community at BMHS, the warm welcome every time we come in the door, and the endless possibilities for our son at this school. Also, the huge smile on his face and total excitement when he came home from his shadow day.

We are looking forward to being part of the BMHS community, confident that our son will be challenged and supported for four years, and we are excited to see the person BMHS will help him become.”

- Mr. Zaven Arzomanian & Ms. Sian MacAdam, parents of Matthew Arzoumanian '26

“I chose Bishop McNamara because of the community -- it is like no other. From day one, after experiencing all of the love, support and hospitality McNamara provided, I knew it was the school for me.

As a new student at Bishop McNamara, I am most looking forward to the experience of being a part of something so different, where I am constantly growing and learning about life as a new student in a new environment surrounded by new and amazing people.”

- Madison Bridges ‘26

“From the point I stepped through the doors, I felt a strong sense of community, pride, and shared values of family, belonging, and acceptance at BMHS. I experienced an excitement from my interactions with students, faculty and the administration. However, the most important reason why I chose BMHS was the belief and confidence I felt that my daughter would be protected, nurtured, and challenged to achieve what she once believed were her ‘impossibles’.

I'm looking forward to seeing my daughter's growth and development as she progresses throughout the years. My most pivotal and highly anticipated moments will come from watching her excel from being immersed in an environment like BMHS that fosters innovative learning and diverse experiences.”

- Ms. Renita Bridges, mother of Madison Bridges ‘26

The Admissions Team looks forward to answering any questions you may have about our admissions process. We can be reached via email at admissions@bmhs.org.

Coaches’ Corner

In this edition of Coaches’ Corner, we’re checking in with two BMHS coaches at the end of their seasons. Stay tuned for more team updates from the 2022-2023 school year in the next Messenger!

COACH

MARK BROWN (BOYS’ SOCCER)

Our varsity boys’ soccer team had an incredible season this year, finishing 17-2-1. They finished the season ranked #2 in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) and had multiple features in the Washington Post. Their coach, Mark Brown, was also named WCAC Boys’ Soccer Coach of the Year!

Mark has been coaching boys’ soccer at Bishop McNamara since 2018. We caught up with him to hear about the season.

What were the keys to success for your team this season?

The keys to success for the boys’ soccer program this year definitely were built on their love for each other and for the game. In all of my years of coaching, this was by far the closest and most caring team towards each other I have ever had.

What do you love most about coaching at McNamara?

I love continuing to put our school and soccer program on the map. I love the progress that we have made over the last four years, and I’m ecstatic about the future of the program moving forward.

What moment(s) made you proud this season?

First of all, continuing to beat DeMatha! Also, seeing my players being respected and honored for their amazing talents on and off

SIGNING DAY

Congratulations to all of our student-athletes who signed their National Letters of Intent to the colleges and universities of their choice earlier this fall!

National Signing Day has traditionally been the first day that a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent for a collegiate sport with a school that is a member of the United States National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Three words to describe our Mustangs: Resilient, respectful, game-changers for the youth behind them!

In addition to the Coach of the Year award, the boys’ soccer program is very proud of the Bishop McNamara team members who were selected to the WCAC All-Conference Teams for 2022:

Owen Allegro ‘23 - First Team

Darren Greenwood ‘23 - First Team, WCAC Player of the Year

COACH

KAMISHA KELLAM (GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL)

Our varsity girls’ volleyball team had their most successful season yet, making it to the WCAC playoffs. The team ended the season with a 15-8-1 overall record, and an 8-5 conference record Coach Kamisha Kellam ‘05 was also selected as the WCAC Volleyball Coach of the Year!

Coach Kellam is in her 11th season as the head volleyball coach at Bishop McNamara, and we checked in with her for her reflections on the season.

What were the keys to success for your team this season? Our keys to success were working together and moving on to the next point. In the past, we used to play as individuals but we continue to work on playing as a fluid unit.

What do you love most about coaching at McNamara?

What I love most is the support and family environment. McNamara has been my second family since my years as a student - the fans and support are unmatched!

What moment(s) made you proud this season? Our first match against St. John’s College High School made me the most proud. We set the tone for our season early and put other teams on notice.

Three words to describe our Mustangs: Resilient, confident, passionate

In addition to the Coach of the Year award, the volleyball program is very proud of the Bishop McNamara team members who were selected to the WCAC All-Conference Teams for 2022:

Kiylah Presley '24 - First Team

Brooklynn Patterson '24 - Second Team Justyce McKennie '25 and Makenzie Colbert '23 - Honorable Mentions

We're so proud of Madisen McDaniel '24! She participated in Steph Curry's elite invitationonly basketball camp this summer. Only 13 boys and girls were selected for this prestigious event. Congratulations, Madisen!

HALL FAME

On October 22, 2022, the Bishop McNamara Family came together for the 25th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held in the Andy Mona ‘82 Center.

. . . . .

Since 1997, Bishop McNamara has formally recognized the personal and professional accomplishments, community service and leadership of former Bishop McNamara and La Reine High School scholar-athletes. Members of Bishop McNamara‘s Hall of Fame exemplify the lessons they learned in athletics – teamwork, integrity, the dignity of labor, discipline and determination – in their work and community.

. . . . .

This year’s class of inductees was no exception.

The 25th Annual Bishop McNamara Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Let’s meet and celebrate this year’s honorees!

Velveetta (Somerville) Battle LR ‘74 Girls’ Basketball

I am one of 14 children and the first of 4 girls in my family to attend La Reine High School. My parents worked hard and sacrificed for their children to obtain the best education they set before us. Believe it or not, La Reine was an opportunity I was hoping to pass by; however, my parents knew better. They stated that La Reine was an outstanding school and that was the school for me. ‘The school for me???’ I didn’t understand ‘WHY’ LaReine. Again, they knew what was best for me… education, doing our best, and giving our all to everything we do. La Reine was outstanding.

Marcus Somerville ‘82 Football & Boys’ Basketball

My favorite memory was when I was a freshman - winning the basketball conference championship. The game ended in four overtime periods, and what it taught me was never to give up. That lesson carried me into my senior year when we won the WMAC Football Championship.

Danielle Bozeman ‘04 Girls Basketball & Cross Country

I think all sports teams strive to have a family-like atmosphere, but McNamara really made that a reality for us, from the President and Principal to the janitorial staff and security. When we won, they celebrated us. When we lost, they did their best to uplift us and encourage us to bounce back. We took such pride in representing our school and it was because everyone around us made us want to do it for more than just ourselves.

Track & Field (Indoor & Outdoor)

I can literally go on and on about all of the experiences and memories that I have from my time at Bishop McNamara but what it would all boil down to is that we are a family and that’s what made being a part of the team so meaningful. Coach Chapman, Mr. Johnson, and my parents Kenneth and Sandra moved heaven and earth when it came to us and because of that, we were able to accomplish so many great things as individual athletes and as a team. Without their support and guidance, we wouldn’t have made it as far as we did and for that, we will always be grateful to them.

Brandon Coleman ‘10 Football & Boys Basketball

Every home football game, my grandparents used to park near the scoreboard in the parking lot and watch the game on the hill. Every time I would score a touchdown my grandfather would blow the horn to sound off the celebration. Of course, the entire stadium knew that if I scored a touchdown then the horn would soon follow and it became a proud tradition that people still reference to this day. Little memories such as that made the whole experience priceless.

Celebrating the 2022 Tony Johnson Unsung Hero Award: Susanne Mendiola

The Tony Johnson Unsung Hero Award is presented annually to a member of the Bishop McNamara High School community who most exemplifies all those characteristics demonstrated by Tony Johnson. Tony exemplified a servant heart, hard work, dedication, loyalty, mentorship, faith, academic excellence, stewardship, and a commitment to the growth and development of our student-athletes.

This year’s recipient is Susanne Mendiola! Ms. Mendiola, who most recently served as Executive Assistant to the Principal, helped to maintain our girls’ and boys’ tennis program through our dealings with COVID-19 as a school and as an Athletic program. Ms. Mendiola, who typically stays under the radar, was a constant at tennis practices and always brought a positive attitude coaching our young men and women. Additionally, she was (and is!) always ready to cheer on our Mustangs at their games. Congratulations and thank you so much, Susanne! We are so grateful for all of your wonderful service to Bishop McNamara.

WMAC is the student broadcast journalism arm of Bishop McNamara High School. Under the direction of Emmy Award-winning local media personality Lou Holder (who is also a two-time BMHS parent), selected students learn and practice key aspects of broadcast journalism.

Whether in front of the camera or behind the camera doing videography or still photography, students are telling the story of Bishop McNamara with weekly broadcasts and specialized features and profile segments that you can see on the school’s website!

Because this is serious and critical marketing work being done for the school and for the Mustang community, participation in the WMAC program is very selective. Only students selected by the principal, faculty,

WMAC Sound Bites

"The WMAC program has helped and guided me into a confident public speaker through the guidance of Mr. Holder. Initially, when I first joined my junior year, I believed I was a good public speaker and with that, Mr. Holder pushed me into becoming a better one wherein I am now comfortable and confident in my voice in front of any crowd. What I found most difficult, but what has helped me the most not only as a public speaker but as an efficient communicator in any setting, was learning how to speak confidently without a script. Now, in my freshman year of college at the University of Maryland, I am reaping the reward of what I have learned in WMAC in classes and most importantly, my daily life." - Nicaela

‘22

"WMAC has helped me to develop my communication and public speaking skills. I learned how to capture what I wanted to convey through a camera lens. I was able to further my skills through video editing and graphic design, which allowed me to creatively communicate my ideas. Through this program, I became more confident with speaking in front of a camera after being accustomed to working behind the scenes. I’ve been able to increase my skills and become more sure of myself, on and off the camera, while in this program. "

"Being a part of the WMAC was very exciting. I enjoyed the time I had being on camera and being behind it. Being in this program helped me pursue Mass Communications because I would love to know how to work a camera and be part of a radio station. It has also helped me be more confident in front of a camera. I loved being a part of this program because it helped me speak fluently and I was able to show my personality to many people."

or current WMAC students can participate. To stay in the program, once selected, Mr. Holder requires three things that are key for success in the real world no matter what industry you get into.

Faithfulness - To the task(s) put before you Available - At whatever time the task needs to be done Teachable - At whatever level you find yourself, learning is a lifelong process

The goal of WMAC is to help students with "in front of the camera" & "behind the camera" skills and also get them ready for broadcast journalism opportunities in college once they leave BMHS. WMAC is also helping students with public speaking, working in groups, and the interpersonal skills needed in all aspects of life!

Alumni of the WMAC program are now doing broadcast journalism work at Delaware State, Howard University, Morgan State, Salisbury State, the University of Maryland, LSU, Xavier, Syracuse, Temple, UPenn, VCU, George Mason, St. Joseph’s, Bowie State, Cornell, Towson and Edwards College in Austin, TX.

"As a college student, being an excellent communicator is one of the most important traits one can have. Being in WMAC has helped increase my confidence in my ability to communicate with others, and network with people from all over. At first, I was not a big fan of public speaking in large groups but being in WMAC pushed me outside of my comfort zone. Now, I am comfortable speaking and voicing my opinions at college events, forums, and in large lecture classes." - Alexis White ‘21

“After being a part of WMAC in high school, all the work coming from my college professors felt really easy because I had pretty much already worked in the industry they were trying to teach their classes about. Being a part of WMAC definitely put me ahead of the game as far as knowing exactly what to do in professional situations. I’m happy that I was a part of the program and I learned things that it normally takes other people years to acquire.”

Ways to Support Bishop McNamara

Support the Bishop McNamara Fund

Gifts to the Bishop McNamara Fund will go towards our tuition assistance initiatives, professional development, expanding our programs, capital improvements, and ensuring our Mustangs continue to have meaningful experiences throughout the school year.

Family Support Fund

Our Family Support Fund allows students whose families are facing financial hardship to continue their education uninterrupted by assisting with expenses such as tuition, books, uniforms, student fees, and meals/ groceries. As the school year gets further underway, the recession that has gripped our markets will have a direct impact on the students who need our school the most. Inflation only makes that a more challenging burden and a world-class education should not be unattainable for our families.

Honoring the founding year of Bishop McNamara, The 1964 Society allows generous benefactors to give with the greatest impact and in the easiest way – by including Bishop McNamara High School in your will or estate plans through planned giving. These types of gifts, including wills, trusts, retirement plans, real estate, and insurance policies, are a wonderful way to ensure that the school’s mission will be carried on well into the future.

NICOLECelebrating Our Scholarships

Looking to contribute and leave a legacy? Bishop McNamara continues to actively seek scholarship opportunities for our Mustangs and their families. Read below to learn about some of our newest scholarships and the legacies they’re building, and how you can help!

The Anthony J. Conto Fine Arts Endowed Scholarship

Below are a few of Mr. Conto’s contributions during his leadership:

• Founding the Fine Arts Diploma Endorsement Program (FADE)

• Establishing our Tri-M Music Honors Society

McNamara proudly presents The Anthony J. Conto Fine Arts Endowed Scholarship!

This newly-premiered scholarship honors Mr. Conto’s 21 years of service and dedication to BMHS. Mr. Conto recently moved on to serve as Executive Director of the Maryland Music Educators Association.

• Doubling enrollment and ensemble offerings within our instrumental music program, including the expansion to a string orchestra program

• Developing the Fine Arts Department to be one of the most wellrounded, robust Fine Arts programs within a college-preparatory environment here in the D.C. metropolitan area

Once this scholarship reaches its goal of $25,000, it will go on to benefit a returning Fine Arts Diploma Endorsement (FADE) student for the remainder of their time at Bishop McNamara.

Sister David Ann Niski, OSF Endowed Scholarship

Graduates of La Reine High School will easily recognize the name of Sister David Ann Niski. Currently the Executive Director for the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Foundation, Sister David Ann previously served as a teacher and disciplinarian at La Reine High School.

Sister David Ann has remained involved with Bishop McNamara, recently serving as a member of our Board of Directors and Advancement Committee (2019-2022), and her service to our school has been immeasurable. She has frequently found opportunities for our students to intern with organizations like NASA, which has helped to increase interest in STEM and its possibilities for our Mustangs. Most recently, she contributed her personal gifts and memories of

La Reine High School to ensure the new La Reine Science & Innovation Center will serve every student, fulfill the mission of the Brothers of Holy Cross, and always remain inclusive of the La Reine High School alumni.

This scholarship, currently funded at $25,000, will contribute 4% of its value annually, in perpetuity, to a young woman exemplifying her spirit and living out the values of the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters. Her vision for our young women will live on, forever, in this award here at Bishop McNamara.

The Walter C. Webb Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Earlier this year, Bishop McNamara was honored to announce the development of the Walter C. Webb, Sr. Endowed Scholarship.

Mr. Webb was the first African American teacher at BMHS, and a brilliant instructor and leader of the math department. He taught from 1970 until the mid-1980's, and proclaimed that teaching math was one of his greatest passions. His wife Alice always says that “my husband is the best math teacher anywhere". Additionally, both of his sons (Walter Jr. '88 and Joseph '96) graduated from Bishop McNamara.

Mr. Webb was a humble and wise soul who mentored many co-

workers. He was a math tutor who was well known for helping students prepare for the SAT. Often his clients would call him late at night with math questions and he would always immediately answer the phone and assist them. Walter was loved by everyone who met him, and he had many nicknames over the years. He received the name “Coach” while at Virginia Union playing in a “pick-up” basketball game. His sons called him “Boss Man,” and one of his greatest joys was becoming a grandfather and having his twin grandsons call him “Grand Boss.”

The Walter C. Webb, Sr. Endowed Scholarship was created by alumni and Mr. Webb's family.

The Unforgettable Spirit Randell Duncan Memorial Scholarship

The Randell Duncan Memorial Scholarship Award was established after the Bishop McNamara High School Class of 2000 was compelled by the desire to recognize and celebrate their fallen brother, Randell Duncan, a unique man of character.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances of his death, Randell’s positive, creative, and selflessly giving spirit continues to live on and inspire everyone who was touched by his life. Therefore, a scholarship fund was created to ensure the continued support and financial

backing to individuals encapsulating all of the qualities that define an “Unforgettable Spirit”.

This summer, the class of 2000 came together to formally celebrate their twentieth reunion and continue to fundraise for the Randell Duncan Memorial Scholarship Award, so that it can live in perpetuity in memory of their beloved classmate.

To donate to these or any other established scholarships at Bishop McNamara, please visit https://bit.ly/BMHSGiving22 or use the QR code to the right.

If you would like to establish a scholarship at Bishop McNamara, or support our general financial aid and scholarship fund, please email Ms. Heather Nadolny, Director of Development and Communications, at heather.nadolny@bmhs.org.

THE MUSTANG MESSENGER 27

From McNamara to College:

Kennedy Walker ‘21 is a Millennium Scholar in her sophomore year at The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State).

For years, Kennedy has dreamed of becoming an engineer. Throughout high school, she explored various types of engineering while participating in summer enrichment programs like the Women in Engineering summer program at the University of Maryland College Park and the Cornell Catalyst Program, sponsored by billionaire Robert Smith. Both programs helped her understand engineering better, focus

on resources, and how to look for schools where she could pursue her dream. They were also a great addition to her resume, on top of her accomplishments at Bishop McNamara.

When asked about how well Bishop McNamara prepared her, she had very honest answers. Though she knew that STEM was her passion, she did not like Math until she had Mrs. Diehlmann and Ms. Coney. “Mrs. Diehlmann made Math fun, and Ms. Coney broke Math down so that it was easy to understand.”

Kennedy also credits Ms. Brennan for helping her with her writing. “Her detailed critiques made me a better writer.” She admits that unfortunately, due to the pandemic, she was not able to get the hands-on experience in Chemistry that she desired, but is working hard to learn all that she can now.

Kennedy entered Penn State as a Material Science Engineering major but now has realized that she wants to major in Chemical

not my favorite subject, became my favorite class because of Mrs. Diehlmann.”

These teachers, along with AP classes and independent study, helped prepare Louis for college. Learning how to build strong relationships with his high school teachers has also helped him build strong relationships with his college professors, which he understands is key in college.

Bishop McNamara works to create empowered leaders who are ready to change the world. We’ve already seen our recent alumni doing wonderful things in college, Louis Pickens ‘20 says that Bishop McNamara’s environment is what makes it special, and teachers were the first thing that came to mind. He noted the way that Mr. Nolte, Mr. Greer, Mrs. Diehlmann, and Mr. Holloman (for example) showed how much they cared and would go out of their way to help him. “Math, though it was

“I picked Xavier University because I wanted an HBCU (Historically Black College or University) that provided a similar environment (to Bishop McNamara).”

When Kennedy Bradwell ‘21 reflects on her time at Bishop McNamara, she admits that the people made BMHS a special place, but one group of individuals made it extra special - the teachers! “My teachers had the most faith in me.”

That faith helped her believe in herself, and now she wants to produce media that helps others believe in themselves as well. “I want to have stories of Black Excellence to show on a bigger screen. There are not a lot of Black stories on television that I can relate to or that I see myself in, so I want to make those

stories for myself and for others that feel the same way.”

Kendall, the Class of 2021 Salutatorian, is now a sophomore, participating in an exclusive major, Business of Cinematic Arts at the #1 film school in the country, The University of Southern California. During her senior year at McNamara, she was the recipient of several scholarships and full-ride offers totaling over $1.5 million collectively. She likes USC because of how much there is to do, and is grateful and excited that she chose the right school.

Checking in with our Recent Alumni

and recently checked in with a few to hear how they’re doing. We also wanted to see how McNamara prepared them for their educational futures.

Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Engineering. While she was originally interested in Material Engineering, she has come to an understanding that the major may limit her in ways that Chemical Engineering would not.

Kennedy’s journey is a common one. Career exploration can be complex, and the earlier one starts to explore the better. Kennedy started to apply for these programs in her sophomore year and continues to get closer to her destiny as she narrows the field with a better understanding of her future occupation.

As a young Black woman attending a PWI (Predominately White Institution) studying STEM, she has faced some challenges. At first, she found herself second-guessing her statements and answers, but realized that her statements and answers were valid. She has had to become more intentional about being confident in whatever space she is in, recognizing that she is supposed to be there.

Kendall’s pieces of advice for current Mustangs are as follows: “Work on learning concepts and do not rely on memorization. Understanding over memorization is key. Time management is essential, but make sure there is some flexibility built into that management. Not having proper rest and the ability to plan for breaks can be unhealthy.” Her final piece of advice for college-bound students – always have a filtered water bottle on hand.

Now in his Junior year, Louis has embraced Louisiana’s music, culture, hospitality, and his newfound passion. Louis shared that he was always good at science and knew his purpose was to help others, so the medical field was his initial choice. However, after interning with IBM, he realized that business was a better fit for him.

Louis has learned several lessons during his time at Xavier University. First, he advises his fellow Mustangs to get involved during their freshman year of college, even if it’s just one group. He thinks that making connections and networking are important, as well as asking for help when needed. “Don’t wait until you don’t understand something. Go to your professor’s office hours. Go to workshops. Apply yourself and put

the work in. Use your resources.”

Professors, teacher’s assistants (TAs), and upperclassmen have all helped him to form a path to success. He has also recently joined a leadership society that allows him to apply for additional scholarships and looks forward to future opportunities as he continues his college career.

Kendall credits Ms. Heneghan for being the most influential on her art. “She taught me to think critically about art. I still use the principles and methods that she taught me, and I also teach others the methods that she taught me.” Outside of the arts, Kendall says, thanks to Bishop McNamara, she was most prepared for writing in her current film program, where most assignments are based in writing.

In true Mustang fashion, she wanted to share some of her wisdom with current students and parents. Her first piece of advice was to take the PSAT seriously. Many of her initial scholarships and offers came from the PSAT. Kendall also encourages students to “say yes to things you normally wouldn’t do”, and she used lacrosse as an example. Before being asked, she had never considered playing, but it became

an extremely positive and memorable part of her high school experience. “Seniors, be true to who you are in your personal statement. Don’t write what you think they want, but share your voice. That’s what’s most important. Finally, embrace what you’re doing right now, but remember there’s always more to come.”
