As a Bismarck-Mandan resident for the last eight years, one of the things that I’ve come to appreciate most about our community is how much we’ve changed. Adapting to change isn’t always easy but, if done well, it can bring incredible opportunities for growth. Based on what we know today, it’s safe to say that Bismarck-Mandan is going to see these trends continue in the years to come, and it’s exciting to see.

Our population has grown and changed. Our schools have grown and changed. Our economy has definitely grown and changed. These are all are obvious and can be easily measured in the number of residents, number of students, or number of dollars being spent in Bismarck-Mandan. However, another indicator of our community’s progress is the types of projects that we’re seeing developed around town.

We’ve written before in the Connection about how quality of life projects like North Dakota’s Gateway to Science, or the recently completed Mandan Morton Public Library in Dykshoorn Park, help make Bismarck-Mandan unique. When we’re competing for talent with every other community in America, it’s critical to support these kinds of amenities that help set us apart. However, something else that will make Bismarck-Mandan stand out are the different types of housing options that are available for folks who want to make this area their home.

Our community’s developers have taken great initiative to provide neighborhoods and developments to address the quality-of-life amenities that residents want. Similarly, Bismarck-Mandan’s home builders are constructing more housing options that are unique in character and enhance our community. Furthermore, we’re fortunate to have several projects underway that expand our housing options and appeal to wider range of home buyers. With the continued progress and diversity of these efforts, our development community is making Bismarck-Mandan an even more attractive destination for talent of all ages-- and that’s good for all of us.

I’m excited for you to read about several of these great projects in this month’s Connection, but there’s even more to celebrate this month at the Chamber EDC. We just held our biggest ever Annual Dinner; we’ve launched a new online resource for those considering elected or volunteer service at www.runbisman.com; and we’re nearing the end of another successful Legislative Session at the Capitol.

BISMARCK-MANDAN IS RIPE FOR URBAN INFILL AND ADAPTIVE REUSE

If urban infill and adaptive reuse were easy, every developer would do it. Right? Greenfield development may need new infrastructure, but at least it is a blank canvas. Urban infill develops vacant or under-utilized parcels within existing developed areas. Adaptive reuse remodels an existing building for a new use or purpose.

In addition to our beautiful greenfield development, Bismarck-Mandan have some exciting developments of urban infill and adaptive reuse.

THE TRESTLE BUILDING

For decades, the north side of Bismarck’s Main Avenue between 6th Street and 7th Street was an empty, gravel parking lot. Once upon a time, it was the Lamborn Hotel and the original site for St. Alexius Hospital. It fell victim to the urban renewal mindset when half the buildings downtown were demolished to create parking lots. The City of Bismarck had owned the lot since the 1970s. The parcel had the potential to house an expansion for the Radisson Hotel, but that never came to fruition.

A few years ago, the City of Bismarck put out a Request for Proposals about developing the site. Developer David Witham recalls being at a City Commission meeting when another developer said they essentially expected to get the land for free, and they wanted to close the deal quickly to take advantage of housing funds.

“Stating that in a public forum essentially shut down that proposal” Witham said. “We came up with an offer that we felt was fair market value, and I don’t think the City would have accepted an offer that wasn’t fair market value.”

Witham is the President of Denizen Partners, the group that developed The Trestle Building at 630 E. Main Ave. in Bismarck.

“My background is in architecture and urban planning,” Witham said. “It’s a passion project for me to show the community what this project can look like in the community.”

The Trestle Building is a mixed-use building with commercial space on the ground floor, and residential apartments on the floors above. Witham said the biggest hurdle for the project was assembling the ownership group. He said out-of-state investors usually want projects to have 200-300 units, if they are going to invest. The Trestle Building has 52 units.

The Trestle Building has traditional walk-up apartments — like rowhouses in a major metropolitan area. By designing a series of five apartment stairwells, the architect eliminated the need for an interior hallway, which saved enough room for a greenspace.

“It’s a 90-foot lot, so we had to use every foot we could,” Witham said. “By eliminating interior corridors, we saved space. We wanted a greenspace in the middle of a concrete jungle.”

Witham said he is taking a hands-on approach to developing the commercial space — something he didn’t expect to do.

“I’m taking a more proactive approach to forming businesses,” Witham said. “It’s not what I thought I would be doing when I started this 4-5 years ago. We want to curate businesses and influence their ability to compliment and interact with each other. We can cater to the same customer who might come for a haircut and want to buy a bubble tea at the same time.”

In addition to a salon and bubble tea franchise, Witham is recruiting a fitness studio, a tiki bar, a food hall, a coffee shop, a grab-and-go food vendor, a commissary kitchen open to local food entrepreneurs, and a tacos of the world franchise.

Residential tenants started moving in Jan. 1. If The Trestle Building isn’t a good fit for a prospective tenant, Witham has been trading leads back and forth with another downtown housing development — Renaissance Lofts and The Grove Apartments by the Lander Group.

RENAISSANCE LOFTS AND THE GROVE APARTMENTS

Even though the Lander Group is located in Minneapolis, President Michael Lander is from Grand Forks, four generations deep. His wife is part of the Boutros family, which has owned downtown Bismarck property for generations.

“My whole portfolio is this kind of work (rather than greenfield development),” Lander said. “This type of property is exactly what we would be looking for. We feel this is the perfect location for the transition from beautiful, single-family housing to the downtown core.”

Renaissance Lofts are located directly north of the Bismarck Post Office at 500 N. 3rd Street in Bismarck. The Grove Apartments are immediately west at 120 E. Ave. in Bismarck.

Lander doesn’t normally build on lots that big.

“We are used to building on small sites,” Lander said. “We have built on a lot of former gas stations. I’m the primary designer at this company. I could see this as two different projects on this site.”

Renaissance Lofts is similar to a traditional apartment building with 68 units over four floors. The Grove Apartments are built like large houses divided into five units. In addition, three units are carriage houses built on top of the garages. The Grove is composed of 23 units.

“We want to fit into where we are going, and we go into neighborhoods that are serviceable by walkable amenities,” Lander said. “These are brand-new apartments with big windows and open floor plans that are built for today in beautiful old neighborhoods that are very walkable. For 40 years we have been building new homes in old neighborhoods. We love old treelined neighborhoods — not so big on the broken-down old house.”

Before Lander Group developed the properties, they were composed of single-family houses and a small commercial space. By the time landscaping is complete, Lander said they will have replanted over 150 trees.

“Our residents are attracted to the tree-lined, downtown, walkable core,” Lander said.

The project will be finished in a couple of months.

“I’m a proud North Dakotan,” Lander said. “There is very much of a can-do, let’s-work-together attitude. That’s been a really positive thing for me returning to North Dakota.”

BOULEVARD APARTMENTS AND LIBRARY SQUARE

While urban infill can be tricky enough, adaptive reuse can have even more challenges — especially when it is designed for low-income housing.

East of the North Dakota State Capitol is the former Baptist Nursing Home at 1100 E. Boulevard Ave. in Bismarck. Originally built in the 1940s, the Baptist Home underwent many expansions up through the 1980s. In 2013, the organization built a new facility in north Bismarck and put the original Baptist Home for sale. Over the past 10 years, the project has taken so many twists and turns that Brent Ekstrom, Executive Director of Lewis and Clark Development Group, would be forgiven for thinking the project was cursed.

The Ruth Meiers Hospitality House, a homeless shelter, acquired the property with plans to remodel it into a transitional living facility. They were unable to get the zoning change they needed to permit the project. They approached both Lutheran Social Services and Lewis and Clark Development Group to ask them to buy the property and lease it back. Then, Ruth Meiers Hospitality House ceased operations. Lewis and Clark Development Group and Lutheran Social Services next planned to have commercial space on the main floor with residential apartments above. Then, Lutheran Social Services ceased operations in Bismarck-Mandan.

“We should have called this project ‘Perseverance,’ because if it could go wrong, it did go wrong,” Ekstrom said. “It was a huge struggle, but in the end it’s worth it. We’re at 90 percent occupancy in north unit. There is a definite need for affordable housing in Bismarck.”

The Baptist Home had two buildings — the main building is three-story brick with 80 units. The north building has 40 more units.

“The hardest part about adaptive reuse is a lot of times you don’t know what you’re getting into,” Ekstrom said. “The financing is difficult. If it was easy, everybody would do it. It costs the same to build affordable housing as it does to build market-rate housing. Construction costs are the same, but then you’re getting less in rent.”

Often, you run into unexpected construction expenses — such as asbestos, electrical issues, or plumbing issues. “It’s cheaper to build something new than do adaptive reuse,” Ekstrom said, “but then you get urban sprawl. You have to weigh all of that.”

Lewis and Clark Development Group specializes in lowincome and senior housing. Their offices are located on the ground floor of another project — Library Square in Mandan.

Library Square I and II are two apartment buildings that mirror each other on 1st Street NW between Collins Avenue and 1st Avenue NW in Mandan. The original building housed the Mandan Post Office and then the library. Located at 100 1st St. NW, the property had historical value, but the building wasn’t salvageable. To preserve the history, they incorporated historical features such as the original spiral staircase, a decorative archway, and a decorative window into the common area of the new building.

The building has 45 unites of senior affordable housing as well as a chapel, exercise facility, gaming room, and of course — a library.

“The senior population in North Dakota continues to grow,” Ekstrom said. “Any senior housing is going to fill up. Whether it’s affordable or it’s market-rate, senior citizens continue to move into the area from small towns as well as our own aging population.”

KNUTSON FAMILY READY TO BREATHE LIFE INTO THE BISMARCK DEPOT

When Cam Knutson was growing up in BismarckMandan, he created fond memories at the Bismarck Rail Depot, which housed Fiesta Villa restaurant at that time.

“It was this hub of gathering,” said Knutson, Owner of Knutson Companies. “When I moved back to Bismarck in 2018, seeing that building dark and empty and not being utilized I kept thinking, ‘Somebody’s got to do something.’”

In 2022, Knutson purchased the Depot with his father, real estate developer Ron Knutson. Cam Knutson’s background in historic renovations means he went into the real estate deal with eyes open.

“Historic renovations are really, really difficult,” Knutson said. “You don’t know what you’re going to find in a building that is 100-plus years old. I came in with some hesitation, but we need to have it activated again, especially where it is located. It’s right in the center of our community.”

The railroad has been central to the founding and development of Bismarck, and the Depot is a reflection of that. The building was designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert, designer of the U.S. Supreme Court building and multiple state Capitols. Designed in the Mission

Completed in 1901, the Northern Pacific Railway Depot served passengers until Amtrak ended passenger train service to Bismarck in 1979. In 1983, the Depot reopened to the public with Fiesta Villa Mexican restaurant. Fiesta Villa fed the community for more than 30 years until 2016. It was followed by Edwinton Brewing, and the building has been empty since 2019.

“This property was part of the center of commerce for our community in those early days,” Knutson said.

Knutson plans for all new HVAC and electrical as well as major remodels to the windows and roof. The first step in spring construction will be extensive repair to the historic clay tiles. Clay tiles are not common in North Dakota’s climate — for good reason.

“They are very delicate,” Knutson said. “Most normal roofs you can walk on to do the repair work. It’s a unique material when done right, and it lasts a super long time.”

Of all the possibilities for the interior space, Knutson knows one thing for sure — there will be a restaurant. He has heard requests from the public over and over again.

“The restaurant just has to happen,” Knutson said. “It’s such a great space.”

Knutson plans a restaurant on the west side of the building, which has a full kitchen and a cooler. The former Fiesta Villa space on the east side is yet-to-be determined. Knutson said they will be looking at different concepts later this year.

“We just finished investigative sand blasting of those walls (on the east side),” Knutson said. “You won’t see a building like this built again with the work that went into it. We want to bring back that beautiful natural structure that exists in those walls.”

The second floor has been gutted. Knutson is redesigning the office suites for a better flow. The parking lot is in “total disrepair.”

“If we’re going to rip the parking lot up and redo it — let’s redesign the flow of it,” Knutson said. “Maybe we can flip a switch and go from parking certain days to a Saturday morning farmer’s market. It’s a really large canvas to work with.”

Knutson said the outdoor spaces have even more possibilities than the building itself.

“You could have outdoor concerts — there is plenty of room to do whatever you can envision,” Knutson said. “What I’m try to do is create the best canvas possible.”

Work will start this spring, and it will likely take a full year before the doors can open to the public.

“Looking at this building — especially at night when it was dark and empty — what a bummer to see it in that condition,” Knutson said. “With experience in historic redevelopment, it was a call-to-action for me that this was a chance to step up and do something for the community... We’re going to get this thing back alive and active and serving the community for the next 50 years.”

BARNHART CRANE

Tell us about yourself and your role within your business.

A: I have been the Branch Manager at Barnhart Crane, formerly Viant Crane, since March of 2016. I am a Southeast Texas native and have been a resident of North Dakota since 2011. I met my wife, a Dodge, North Dakota native, in 2012. I have been in the crane and rigging industry for over 20 years.

MEMBER SINCE 2016

Briefly tell us the history behind Viant Crane/Barnhart Crane and how you got started.

A: Viant Crane was founded in Superior, Wisconsin in 2011 as a subsidiary of Reuben Johnson and Son. The Mandan, ND branch opened in 2015. While my initial interest in Viant was for an open crane operator’s position, I ended up being hired as branch manager due to my previous management and sales experience in the crane industry in March 2016.

In January 2020, Viant Crane was acquired by Barnhart Crane and Rigging out of Memphis, TN. We kept the Viant name so the transition would be smoother for us and our customers. By July 2023, however, we will be fully rebranded to Barnhart Crane and Rigging.

How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Viant Crane?

A: As the industrial and commercial markets have grown in our region, so has Viant Crane. We have doubled our office size and full-time personnel since 2016 while increasing our crane fleet and capabilities. When we first opened, we were limited to a 275-ton all terrain crane and a 330-ton crawler crane. As we grew, we added a 550-ton all terrain truck crane and a 660-ton crawler crane along with additional units for our bare rental crane fleet up to 100 tons in capacity.

What trends are taking place in your industry?

A: The continued growth of the local refineries and power plants has resulted in a steady flow of job opportunities and reliable customers for Viant Crane. We have started to focus our resources on renewables as well. The recent additions of the 550-ton all terrain truck crane and 660-ton crawler crane give us the needed capabilities to assist in the wind tower maintenance work in the region.

Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with?

A: Like a lot of other industries, our workforce has been limited due to COVID and finding and keeping talent is a constant struggle. Despite the current obstacles, we have been able to sustain constant growth in the Bismarck area.

What does the future Barnhart Crane look like and the industry as a whole look like to you?

A: We hope to maintain our current relationships and footprint in the refineries and power plants in the area and become a major provider of services to the region’s wind maintenance and carbon capture markets.

Viant Crane/Barnhart Crane became a Chamber EDC member in 2016, why do you continue to renew?

A: The Bismarck Mandan Chamber is a fantastic way to network with other businesses and industries in our community. The Chamber is constantly advocating for the development of local business and the interests of our community.

CHAMBER EDC RECEIVES RWIP GRANT

The Chamber EDC was recently awarded a Regional Workforce Impact Program (RWIP) grant through the North Dakota Department of Commerce.

The $15 million in state-wide funding for the RWIP was made available from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The RWIP grant was designed to empower locally led solutions to workforce challenges.

The Chamber EDC was awarded $44,663 to help offset the costs of a new workforce specific website, mobile app, and printed new community member welcome packet. These tools will provide resources to community members that are new to Bismarck Mandan or are interested in living here.

Currently the Chamber EDC is working with a developer to design these tools with a scheduled launch date in May.

BRAND NEW ENTREPRENEURIAL EVENT HELD

The Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC recently partnered with the University of Mary, local entrepreneurs and angel investors to host the first Startup Essentials.

The event was held at University of Mary’s Butler Center in Bismarck and provided an opportunity for attendees to hear from local founders and entrepreneurs. Also presenting was Greg Syrup who is a founding partner of 701 Fund.

701 Fund is a Grand Forks based venture capital fund that has been around since 2015 and invested in over 20 companies. The event was meant to foster the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Bismarck Mandan by engaging new or interested entrepreneurs.

This is just one way the Chamber EDC is taking a more proactive approach in growing our local entrepreneurial community.

JOB SHADOW WEEK HAS RECORD BREAKING NUMBERS

The Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC held the 2023 Job Shadow Week from February 27 – March 3, seeing an all-time high participation from high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Nearly 300 students from the two cities participated in over 500 job shadow opportunities, at nearly 100 local businesses and organizations.

Job Shadow Week is an annual event put in in co-operation with Bismarck Public Schools, Mandan Public Schools, and local businesses who volunteer to host students for two or four-hour timeslots. This week provides a unique opportunity for young adults to peer behind the scenes at jobs they are interested in pursuing and gain a greater understanding of what their future in Bismarck-Mandan could look like.

Without the support of our generous business community, this program would not be successful. Thank you to every one of the organizations involved in giving our students such a wonderful and important opportunity. BUSINESS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM OF THE MONTH

NEW JOBS TRAINING PROGRAM offers incentives to primary sector businesses that are creating new Full Time employment opportunities through business expansion, creation and/or relocation to the state. Funding is provided to help offset the cost of training new employees.

Under the North Dakota NEW JOBS TRAINING PROGRAM, your business may be able to obtains funds in the form of a loan, a reimbursement grant, or under a self-financing option. State income tax withholding from the new positions created are matched for up to ten years, until the maximum reimbursement is reached, or until the loan is repaid, whichever comes first.

University of Mary hosted the Leadership BismarckMandan class for Faith, Values, & Ethics (FaVE) Day. BISMARCK STATE COLLEGE BREAKS SEVEN-YEAR ENROLLMENT RECORD; UP 20 PERCENT OVER LAST SPRING

Bismarck State College saw a 6.2% increase in students for the Fall 2022 semester and now a 20.19% increase for the Spring 2023 semester, breaking an academic year enrollment record from seven years ago. This spring 3,941 students are enrolled at BSC.

BSC is at the top of other enrollment charts as well. The 20% enrollment growth is the highest in the North Dakota University System (NDUS) this spring and for the first time in more than 10 years, BSC has more students enrolled in the spring semester than the fall semester of the same academic year.

“This certainly goes against the enrollment trends we are seeing in higher education, both in North Dakota and across the country,” says BSC President Doug Jensen. “I believe this is the result of both an increased need for a skilled workforce and the way our polytechnic model offers career pathways and flexible education options.”

The polytechnic education model at BSC is unique to this region. It provides multiple, flexible start dates that allow students to begin their education when it works best for them rather than following a traditional academic calendar. This gives students more flexibility to tailor their education to meet their educational and career goals.

BSC also saw a 108% increase in dual credit enrollment – high school students enrolling in college courses and receiving both high school and college credit simultaneously. This semester, high school students are taking anywhere from three to 12 college credits at the discounted dual credit tuition rate and 41 are considered full-time BSC students with 12 or more credits.

The top five programs seeing the highest enrollment growth include Medical Laboratory Technician (45%), Electric Power Technology (41.75%), Agriculture Industry and Technology (34.29%), Cybersecurity & Computer Networks (22.13%) and Surgical Technology (24%).

Looking ahead, BSC anticipates enrollment will keep increasing as the polytechnic institution continues to add new academic programs in high-demand fields such as agriculture, cybersecurity, energy, health sciences, manufacturing and automation, and multiple others.

To facilitate the growth in these programs and build industry workforce, BSC broke ground in November 2022 on the region’s only, state-of-the-art, polytechnic education center and has also developed the BSC In-Demand Careers Scholarship to remove financial barriers for individuals pursuing an education that prepares them for an in-demand career. The scholarship offers free tuition, fees and textbooks for students enrolling in classes by June 30, 2023, in a qualifying in-demand career program and is supported with American Rescue Plan Act funds distributed by the ND Department of Commerce.

“The more students we enroll in programs, the more we graduate and the more we fill workforce needs. It’s a win for our students and it’s also a win for economic, community and workforce development,” Jensen says.

REMOTE CONTROL & GO KART TRACKS COMING TO MANDAN

Dacotah Centennial Park (DCP) will soon feature a Remote Control (RC) track and a go kart track. Mandan Parks and Recreation will amend its current lease with Bismarck Mandan Stock Car Association (BMSCA) to add the go kart and RC track, Mandan Parks will not incur any expense. The Mandan Park Board approved this request on February 13.

The BMSCA is responsible for facilitating the construction of these two new features at DCP. The RC track is to be placed on Mandan Parks and Recreation property located on the east side of DCP in the former community garden’s location. The existing RC Track is currently located at Nicholas Park, 1216th 14th St. SE. The go kart track would be located adjacent to the RC Track and existing DCP race track.

BMSCA formed two subcommittees, one responsible for the RC track and other for the go cart track. The committees are responsible for fundraising, development of the tracks, leagues, tournaments, and events. The project will be completed in phases and the estimated completion date is summer of 2023. Each subcommittee is in search of track sponsors and donations to build the tracks.

NORTH DAKOTA’S GATEWAY TO SCIENCE REOPENS IN NEW LOCATION

North Dakota’s Gateway to Science reopened in its new location at 1600 Canary Avenue in March.

NEW TOWN, N.D. BEGINS EXTENSIVE RENOVATION

4 Bears Casino & Lodge today announced it will begin a major renovation, adding a, 7-story hotel tower. The property is located on the western shore of Lake Sakakawea between Minot and Williston in New Town, N.D.

The original 4 Bears Motor Lodge began in the 70s with 40 rooms. In 1993, a casino was added followed over the years with various expansions and improvements, including restaurants, an event center, marina, RV park, water park, convenience store/car wash/liquor store and River Willow gaming boat.

The overall $95 million project includes an 18,000-square-foot demolition of the existing 2-story hotel, 108,000 square feet of new construction

and 20,200 square feet of renovation. Upon completion, 4 Bears Casino & Lodge will have 264 rooms.

The new hotel tower will add 90 guest rooms, gaming, offices and a 3,100-square-foot 1st-floor sports bar with dining room and gaming stations. The extensive project also features a 7th-floor 2,500-square-foot ballroom, meeting rooms and a fine dining steakhouse with glass-surround dining.

The project team includes Wenaha Group, a Native-owned owner’s representative firm; Kraus-Anderson, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest commercial general contractors; and TBE Architects (Thalden Boyd Emery), a St. Louis, Missouri, Native American-founded design firm, known for its work with 121 Tribes and First Nations.

The addition will also include a new Sakakawea Spa with couples’ massage, a gift shop, fitness room, and a hair, nail and pedi salon. The project also upgrades the property’s entrance lobby and 1st floor kitchen, and dedicated glassbacked elevator to the 7th-floor suite.

“The 4 Bears casino is an integral part of our regional economy,” said Mark Fox, chairman of Three Affiliated Tribes, consisting of Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara (MHA). “The MHA Nation supports this hotel development as a means to protect nearly 200 full-time jobs. The infrastructure reinvestment is also necessary to compete with the expansive, off-reservation gaming authorized by the state over the past three years.”

Demolition and site work have begun. Construction of the new hotel tower will begin in June 2023 and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY COUNSELING PROGRAMS EARN ACCREDITATION UNTIL 2031

The University of Mary’s three specialty graduate degrees in Addiction Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and School Counseling within the Liffrig Family School of Education and Behavioral Sciences received an 8-year accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

The board based the accreditation decisions on an extensive review of the self-study documents, the site review team’s report, and the institution’s response to the site review team’s report.

“CACREP accreditation is truly the gold standard for ensuring a high-quality counselor education program,” remarked Dr. Christina Jurekovic, assistant professor, and co-chair and online program coordinator for counseling at the University of Mary. “By obtaining our CACREP accreditation, we are demonstrating to prospective candidates that our program helps students develop the knowledge and skills to effectively serve as licensed clinical mental health counselors and school counselors.

Based on our CACREP accreditation, students can expect a 12:1 full time equivalency student to faculty ratio, which means students enjoy small class sizes and personalized academic support. Our graduate counseling faculty are committed to maintaining our CACREP accreditation, so we can continue to provide the best education possible for our students. We are very proud of all our graduates who are serving the mental health needs in our community and across the nation.”

All three graduate counseling programs are offered to students in two modalities: the blended cohort which is a mix of classes on campus and online; or completely online. All students are required to attend an in-person residency at University of Mary’s Bismarck campus.

A: The short answer is yes. The focus here will be on Microsoft Word. Perhaps you already know how to copy/ paste text and images using a mouse, and the keyboard shortcuts CTRL+C/CTRL+V. But anyone who copies, then pastes, copies, then pastes, copies and pastes ... (you get the idea) is wasting time.

Copy what you need, then copy the second item, then copy the third ... until you have copied all the text or images you need. Then use the Windows Clipboard History to paste the items where needed. To get to your clipboard history, press Windows logo key + V. From the clipboard history, you can paste and pin frequently used items by choosing an individual item from your clipboard menu. Pinning an item keeps it from being removed from the clipboard history to make room for new items. Place your cursor where you need something pasted. Press Windows logo key + V, then double click the text or image that you want to paste.

CAPITAL CREDIT UNION ANNOUNCES AGRICULTURE MANAGER VICE PRESIDENT CHAD WILLIAMS

Capital Credit Union today announced the hiring of Chad Williams as agriculture manager vice president at their Mandan Branch, located at 600 E Main Street.

As agriculture manager vice president, Williams will be responsible for the credit union’s agriculture loan and deposit portfolios, as well as collaboration with loan officers in all regions to deliver business products and services to existing and prospective members. In addition, he will oversee all agriculture services staff. Williams rejoins Capital Credit Union from Eide Bailly where he worked for two years as ag finance manager. Prior to that, he was ag manager vice president at Capital Credit Union’s Main Office in Bismarck. Williams graduated from Northern State University in 2000 with bachelor’s degrees in accounting and finance.

CEDRIC THEEL TOYOTA WELCOMES NEW SERVICE ADVISOR

Cedric Theel Toyota recently welcomed Luz Villa-Villa as the newest Service Advisor. Luz is tasked with being a liaison between the service technicians and service customers helping with warranty questions, answering other questions, and scheduling guests’ maintenance needs. She is also bilingual to help assist our Spanish-speaking customers.

Luz grew up in a small town in Nevada and is one of ten children. She moved to North Dakota in 2019 and has experience in jewelry sales and vehicle sales. Prior to moving to Bismarck, she served as an Army Combat Engineer.

MAKELKY JOINS N.D. LEAGUE OF CITIES

The North Dakota League of Cities (NDLC) has announced the addition of Jennifer Vaagen-Makelky as the new Communications and Training Manager. Makelky brings nearly 20 years of experience in marketing and communications. She has worked in broadcast television as a news and web producer as well as leading the creative services team. Makelky also worked as an advertising and media specialist for a natural gas and electric utility. Jennifer holds a B.S. in marketing from Minot State University.

In her role as Communications and Training Manager, she will work closely with the Executive Director, NDLC staff, and communities across the state to develop communication materials about NDLC services, training opportunities, advocacy, events, and accomplishments. This position will aid in accomplishing the organization’s vision to empower North Dakota communities.

ANNE CARLSEN NAMES NEW VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT

Anne Carlsen is pleased to announce the promotion of Rebecca (Becky) Scheerer to the position of Vice President of Development for Anne Carlsen.

Becky began her career with Anne Carlsen as the Director of Planned Giving in November 2021, bringing over 15 years of development and leadership experience to the organization, specifically in non-profit and higher education fundraising. Majoring in Communications, she received her Bachelor of Science degree from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN and a master’s degree in Philanthropy and Development from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, Winona.

In this new role of Vice President of Development, Becky will be responsible for providing leadership, strategy, planning and guidance for comprehensive fund raising and day to day management for all development programs and staff performing these functions.

Syverson’s diverse background includes finance, marketing, and operations in the manufacturing, engineering, and nonprofit sectors. These combined with a decade of CFO experience have made her into a leader with strong analytical, change management, and strategic planning skills that will help DCN thrive.

As CFO, Syverson is also responsible for ensuring soundness of the company’s financial structure and managing DCN’s relationships with financial institutions and governmental agencies. She will be based out of corporate headquarters in Fargo. Syverson earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of North Dakota and a Master of Business Administration from University of Phoenix. In 2016, she was named to the Prairie Business magazine annual 40 Under 40 list.

The University of Mary has named Cooper Jones to be its executive director of intercollegiate athletics, in charge of athletic administration and all Marauders Armada fundraising in support of its new Greatness through Virtue Strategic Plan.

Jones comes to the University of Mary with nearly 25 years of leadership experience, with stops at NCAA Division I Power 5 conference schools Arizona State University (executive associate athletic director), University of Louisville (assistant athletic director for development), University of Maryland (director of major gifts), and Georgia Tech (development officer). His other Division I administrative posts include senior associate athletic director (University of North Texas), and assistant vice president and chief of staff for institutional advancement (Tarleton State University). He is currently the executive director of intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation at NCAA Division II Cal Poly Humboldt.
