This month’s edition of the Connection is all about talent-more specifically, new talent!

This month’s Connection features the second annual Chamber EDC ‘20 Under 40.’ While workforce availability is always at the top of our list of concerns, it’s important to recognize the new talent we have around Bismarck-Mandan and to highlight the contributions our young professionals make to our local economy. While programs like 20 Under 40 aren’t necessarily new, it is still relatively new to us and it gives us a chance to use our biggest microphone (the Connection) to tell the world about some incredible young professionals.

When we put our initial call for nominations, you all did not disappoint. We had more than 60 unique nominations that were then scored by a panel of three judges from the Chamber EDC and Bismarck Mandan Young Professionals Network. You can now read more about all of those 20 individuals who were selected in this month’s Connection and I know you’ll be inspired and encouraged by their stories.

Speaking of new talent, we’re privileged to announce a new addition to the Chamber EDC.

Last month, Brenda Nagel started as the Chamber EDC’s new President & CEO and we’re beyond excited to welcome her to the team. For the past two decades, Brenda has been a dedicated Chamber EDC volunteer serving as Board Chair, Local Issues Committee Chair and Leadership Bismarck-Mandan Steering Committee Chair. Combined with her professional experience, most recently as the University of Mary’s Vice President for Public Affairs, Brenda’s skills and commitment to relationships will serve her well in her new role as our President & CEO.

Brenda’s first day in the office was July 17 and she’s hit the ground running. I sincerely enjoy working with her because of her passion, her energy and her genuine concern for our community. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

After graduating from Bismarck High School, I attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing. Today, I’m a marketing and communications professional with a global design firm, and I serve as a board member and marketing advisor for my family’s nonprofit, Tracy’s Sanctuary House. My hobbies include being an avid superhero movie fan, kayaking, learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and collecting new books to read. Most days, you can catch me at a coffee shop enjoying a latte.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

I am passionate about building communities through leadership, connections, and serving others. In my career, I thrive being a vital connector that helps people succeed throughout the organization. Outside of work, I enjoy creating communities through facilitating or participating in a wide variety of social and volunteer events. I am motivated by anything that enables me to build a supportive network while strengthening connections.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

One of the primary challenges I faced was gaining confidence in my communication and leadership skills as a young woman in a male-dominated industry. The architecture and engineering industry is a highly technical field involving a significant learning curve. Being actively involved with external and internal groups focused on building up leaders like Stantec’s Developing Professionals Group and the local chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators helped me develop those skills and grow into a confident professional. Now, I can manage some of our largest accounts while simultaneously running several pursuits and campaigns with poise.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

If you’re interested in something, raise your hand and get involved. Don’t wait for someone else to tell you to do it; take the chance. You never know what connections you can make or what opportunities will find you once you put yourself out there.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I’m a Grand Forks native and proudly graduated from North Dakota State University. I have always been passionate about community building, public service, and politics. After college, I applied for an internship at the White House in Washington, D.C., where I served in operations and logistics.

I returned to North Dakota to teach before continuing my career in public service. I joined the Mayport-CG team in Mayville, N.D., where I taught band and choir. Yet, my passion for public service and politics remained a driving force within me. Coincidentally, at this juncture, Doug Burgum announced his candidacy for Governor, and I jumped at the opportunity to join his campaign team.

Before returning to North Dakota, I earned my Master of Public Administration at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to return to my home state to serve the Burgum administration as a policy advisor and later policy director before becoming Chief of Staff.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

I am motivated by serving and seeing others succeed and enjoy experiences. I have always been drawn to creating new opportunities and experiences for friends, family, and colleagues which has drawn me to service. I have been lucky to have mentors and family who have taught me the value of servant leadership and I am motivated each day to be a better servant leader than I was the day before.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

One of the greatest challenges in public service and policy is the reduction of healthy debate. Too many feel that disagreeing on something is an argument rather than a good discussion or debate. We need to find ways to increase respectful dialogue even if the participants are at the opposite ends of the topic.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Create a plan for your future, but always be willing to change course, take a detour and explore what you may not have originally thought you would be doing. If you show up, find a way to get to “yes” and work hard, opportunities will be abundant.

I grew up in Bismarck, graduated from Century High School, and UND with Majors in Entrepreneurship and Business Management. I joined Mann Signs in 2008 and spent my early years with the company out in the field installing and servicing signs. I later became the General Manager and was part-owner for nine years. In September of 2022, I became sole owner of the company. It’s been fulfilling to be part of the success and growth of our company over the last 15 years. Learning the sign business from the ground up has helped me understand all aspects of the business.

Bismarck-Mandan is a special place to live and work. Our company strives to have a positive impact in our community. I enjoy spending time with my family, hunting, fishing, golfing, and being a volunteer youth hockey coach.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Building relationships with our customers. I enjoy working with them throughout the entire process of a sign project. From the initial design phase to production and installation, it is rewarding to bring an idea to life in the form of a new sign. It is also rewarding to see all of the work in our community, state, and region that we have completed over the years.

My parents have been role models for me all throughout my life. They have always supported me and believed in me along the way. I am also motivated to be a role model for our three boys and hope to have as much of a positive impact on their lives as my parents have had on mine.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

• Work hard.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I was born and raised in Bismarck, where I attended the University of Mary before moving to Washington DC to work for Senator John Hoeven. After graduate school at University of North Dakota, I moved home to work as a policy advisor for Governor Doug Burgum.

I currently work for the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation, and I just finished my first session in the North Dakota State Senate. My legislative efforts have been focused on policies that support making our state a great place to live — a great educational system, a strong economy, and safe, affordable communities.

My family has always been my number one priority. My grandma Audrey served in the state legislature in the 1990s and has always been an inspiration to me. I’m grateful to have a family now that is so supportive of my efforts professionally and in public service. My wife and daughter inspire me to be a better person every day.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

I’m driven by a strong sense of community service; it’s what prompted me to run for office, and it’s what gets me excited about our work at TRMF to provide positive, lifechanging experiences for people visiting the Badlands. We are blessed to live in a state like North Dakota, and I believe we have a responsibility to leave it better than we found it for the next generation.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Throughout my career, balancing various responsibilities while being engaged and growing professionally has been both a challenge and an opportunity. Prioritizing my family, faith, and health has helped me to bring my best self to my career and service.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

My time working for Governor Burgum taught me to embrace a growth mindset; that we should always be focused on aspirational goals and progress towards them.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I was born and raised in Bismarck with my older sister and two parents. I moved to Grand Forks for college to attend the University of North Dakota. After graduating, my (now) husband and I moved back to Bismarck to start our careers and eventually a family. While working full-time, I studied online and obtained a master’s in management from Minot State University. I have branding and marketing experience in healthcare, higher education, and the financial industry, where I reside today. We enjoy raising our boys in Bismarck near family and travel in our spare time.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

I’m motivated by my goals. I’m constantly setting new ambitions for myself that I strive to achieve whether it’s in my personal or professional life. I’m a driven and self-disciplined person so typically find myself building a new goal as soon as my previous goal seems attainable. Ultimately, I’m motivated by the betterment of myself, family, and career.

CHALLENGES

IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

My greatest challenge is my eagerness to learn and grow. At this phase in my career, I am soaking in as much hands-on experience and knowledge that I can. I’m a strong believer that book smarts can only take you half the way, and the most valuable knowledge comes from first-hand experiences, which take time. I’m grateful to have found an employer that gives me the training and career path that I am seeking.

WHAT

ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

My advice is to ask questions. Growing up, I was the shy kid who wouldn’t speak in class and as I’ve grown in my career and confidence, I continue to speak up and ask questions along the way. From doing this, I’ve gained an immense amount of industry knowledge which is propelling me in my career. My second piece of advice is to get involved – whether it’s sitting in meetings, joining committees or volunteering, the people you meet and experiences you gain are invaluable. It’s easy to sit out, but when you force yourself to get involved, you get a fulfillment that you didn’t know you were looking for.

I’m a native of Center, N.D., and graduated from Valley City State University with a degree in elementary education. I began my career at MDU Resources in 2008 and was promoted to my current position in 2016.

I enjoy being an active part of the community in many ways. I currently serve on the Bismarck Library Foundation board, most recently as past president. I’m a 2020 graduate of Leadership Bismarck-Mandan and a current member of the Empowering Women in Business program offered through the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC.

In my spare time, I enjoy tackling DIY home projects with my husband, attending my nieces’ activities, reading a good book and spending time with family.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

I like challenging work and a team that provides growth and support in the workplace. I often partner with our executive team on a variety of projects, which gives me broad experience and insight into our businesses. I also believe in servant leadership and in doing things for others, so I often volunteer at work and in my community.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

In today’s work environment, I find that I must be nimble as my job requires me to constantly pivot and adjust with changing needs and demands. I’ve learned to handle short-notice changes and be a flexible problem-solver.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

• Be present. Be engaged. Be purposeful. Work is more than just showing up.

• Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Faith, Family, Relationships. My relationship in Christ is the foundation of who I am and every decision I make. My family and I participate in Church and weekly Bible studies, something that helps me stay focused on what’s most important in life. I do my best to conduct myself in a manner that is consistent with my faith. This extends to my clients and the interest in helping them be successful, as their success will ultimately reflect positively upon me as their consultant and build the relationship. My ability to plan ahead for my clients helps reduce the unforeseen circumstances they encounter, which creates more time for me to spend with my family while furthering my career.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

The Oil & Gas industry is very demanding from the standpoint of requiring responsiveness, long hours, and adaptability. My family is very understanding when I must work late on short notice to help clients work through their challenges. It is not uncommon to be taking work calls over the weekend at the same time I’m sitting in a boat fishing with my husband and kids. Their support and encouragement has allowed me to excel in my career and build long-term relationships with my clients. My goal is to ensure not just a great work-life balance for myself, but the amazing team I get to work with. Finding solutions to the challenges of meeting project deadlines, saving clients’ money, and meeting their expectations is fulfilling.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Start working at a young age and learn the value of hard work. Nothing in life comes easy or will be handed to you. Trustworthiness and integrity should be the backbone of your career.

I appreciate being given the opportunity to briefly tell you about myself, and what motivates me; share challenges in my career path, and advice I would offer to other young professionals. I’m taking a non-traditional approach to sharing those things by expressing my appreciation for the organizations and members that are innovating and expanding what it means to be a citizen of Bismarck-Mandan.

Moving across the country, with zero connections, I intentionally sought spaces where I could build meaningful relationships. Some of them were a fit, others were not. I am so grateful for my time spent exploring, because it further leads me to understand who I am. Programs like Leadership Bismarck-Mandan introduced me to how many options there are, personally and professionally, for growth across the private, public, and non-profit sectors.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

The most successful projects and groups that I’ve been part of consist of a membership with a diverse personal and professional background. Everyone brings something different to the table, leading to engaging conversation and the creation of possibilities.

(American Poet) Mary Oliver wrote a piece where she put forth the “Instructions for living a life” as: “Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” This is a touchstone I have only recently come across, but it has become a set of guiding principles for how I see myself as an honoree with a title of 20 Under 40 and similarly as the 2023 Community Champion for the Young Professionals Network. I find myself to be most productive when I am inspired and I’ve learned that inspiration requires seeking, listening, and commitment.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

My only advice is to keep your eyes and ears open to being astonished. Then, tell about it. If you aren’t sure where to start, share it with me! I’d love to know.

Big picture ideas! Long and dreary winters on the farm taught me how to think creatively, and I believe that gave me the ability to dream up perfect marketing visions for our clients. Every industry, region, and business size has its own unique needs and goals, and I thrive on crafting out-of-the-box ideas that’ll take our neighborhood businesses to new heights.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Marketing is a wild ride. It’s constantly evolving, with shiny new technologies and platforms popping up left and right. Staying on top of the game requires a perpetual state of learning and a willingness to pivot.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Take a leap! Whether it’s going for that “not-so-qualified” job or pitching an idea that really intimidates you, greatness comes to those who dare to make bold moves. So embrace the risk, and let the magic unfold.

I was raised in Montana, but over the last decade of living in Bismarck and having a husband who is from Bismarck, my family is thrilled to call Bismarck our forever home. I love the people, the community, the opportunities, and the summer sunshine. My hobbies, when I’m not busy working or parenting, include reading, spending time with friends, being outside, and traveling.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

My personal motto is to do my very best, even when no one is watching. I have high expectations of myself and of those around me. I am driven to do outstanding work and to learn from and help develop those around me. I grew up playing sports and the value that teamwork makes the dream work have personally held true.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Right out of graduate school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to focus on for a career. I thought about my strengths and what I was best at and after a couple of roles that I didn’t love, I landed in an organization where I had the opportunity learn different facets of the business and to move to a variety of roles and develop my skillset.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

My advice to young professionals is to take the challenging and scary assignments and solve the problem. Taking on the most challenging roles that I didn’t know much about and that made me uncomfortable allowed me to grow as a professional and round out my skillset. Those lateral opportunities gave me an opportunity to learn about the business and build relationships that I later needed at a higher level. My other piece of advice is to figure out what you want and then work like crazy to achieve it all while being the best teammate.

Originally from Mandan I was an All-American gymnast at Hamline University and received my undergraduate degree in Business Administration from North Dakota State University in 2007. I went back to school with my Dad and we received our Master’s Degree in Project Management from the University of Mary in 2018. In 2019, I opened Copper Dog and the Mini Gym with my Mom on Main Street in Mandan. Throughout my professional career I have worked for Scheels, the Minnesota Twins, Under Armour and Delta. I love spending time with my family — we are usually chasing our kids around at their various activities, but I also enjoy traveling, running, hunting, and creating new business plans.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Growing up a gymnast, I learned early on that there is always room to grow and improve. I am motivated by that opportunity. Whether it’s personally, professionally, mentally or physically, I am motivated to continually improve myself and be a better person.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

I think the biggest challenge is understanding that your career, along with most things in life, may not always be an upward, linear path. For me, working for the Minnesota Twins was a dream job, but a new opportunity came along that was impossible to pass up, so I took it. Two and a half years later, during COVID, that position was eliminated and I needed to find a new path. Entrepreneurship was always in my peripheral, but stepping outside of my comfort zone and getting a little push made it come to life. I can honestly say that years ago, I had never envisioned owning a business with my Mom, but I couldn’t be more proud of what we have created.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Communication is extremely underrated. No matter what profession you choose, communication skills are essential. Network! Connections and mentors are invaluable. The right time is NOW. While education is important, real-world experiences are nearly impossible to replicate. Your job, title or salary doesn’t define who you are.

Graduated North Dakota State University in 2006. I’ve spent 16.5 years working as an engineer and manager for this employee-owned company of 200 people. I am very proud of my beautiful wife, who is starting as an assistant principal at the Mandan Middle school soon. We love our two sons unconditionally. We spent the first seven years of marriage living in West Fargo and have lived in Bismarck since 2018. Western North Dakota just feels like home. We are very close to our families.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

My home family and my work family motivate me. I do everything I can to lead by example. I believe that if we all work, learn, laugh, and struggle together, then we will all succeed together. I try not to let anyone down, because I know that people are watching my actions. I am incredibly proud to see those around me succeed.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

To my deepest core, I am a problem solver. The biggest challenges I’ve faced have come from having to give people bad news. I always have a sense of guilt and wonder if I could have done more to help them.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

At our company, we live by our core values. I’ve chosen the three that mean the most to me:

• Integrity: There is a lot of pressure to be “right” or you may want to “guess the answer” to try please someone. If you’re not sure of something, don’t ever lie. Your integrity is difficult to build, but very easy to destroy.

• Be accountable: If someone is counting on you to do 10 things, write them down, and make sure that every one of them is done well and on time.

• Respect: I can tell you from experience — this is a pretty small world. You get what you give.

Seeing the spark of potential in someone and getting to be a piece of that puzzle that will become their successful journey. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Of the challenges on my career path, the biggest one was the decision to stay on the career path. Like many others, I experienced a challenging personal family circumstance that required committed time, energy, presence, and perseverance. I have yet to meet a leader who has not gone through something personally challenging, but each person’s circumstance looks a little different. Holding on to my ambitions and staying with my career was the biggest challenge and subsequently my biggest personal growth. The work-related challenges? Those are resume-, interview-, character-, and knowledgebuilders. Take all of those opportunities you can get.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

When you sit across from a potential supervisor in an interview, make sure you are thoughtfully interviewing them too. The right match can have the potential to change the entire trajectory of your career.

I grew up in rural Wisconsin with the dream of taking over my Dad’s veterinarian clinic. Had you told me when I was 18 that I would be living in North Dakota and working as a recruiter for a technology company, I would have thought you were nuts. Like many other professionals I talk to, my career did not end up how I originally envisioned it, and I am grateful for those unexpected changes in my career path.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

When I was growing up, I had no idea that recruiting was a career path I could explore. My passion has always been helping others, which is why I thought I should go into the medical field. My first exposure to a recruiter was being headhunted by one, leading to my initial full-time position after college. Having someone genuinely care about ensuring the position they had available was the best fit for myself, as well as the company, was a unique experience. I am thankful that story came full circle. I am now that recruiter who can help introduce candidates to roles they maybe have never heard of and watching their excitement, followed by flourishing in that role, has always been my biggest motivator.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

A challenge I have struggled with is recognizing that you can make a positive impact at any level in an organization, even without a leadership title. By staying true to your integrity at work, not being afraid to try new innovative ideas and taking ownership of your mistakes or failures, others within your organization will come to value your opinions and input regardless of your title.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Be intentional. Take the time to reflect on decisions you make at work, your company’s culture, and conversations with coworkers to ensure they align with your personal mission statement and morals. One of the biggest challenges I have faced was working through the multiple lending programs created during the COVID pandemic and being able to respond efficiently for our members.

I would advise other young professionals to build a strong network/team around them. I have been very fortunate to have great people around me and that has been a key factor to my growth and development. I would also tell young professionals not to be afraid of challenges. I was raised right here in Bismarck. I received a Bachelor of Business Marketing from University of North Dakota and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Mary. I started working for the park district in high school at the MAC program and as a lifeguard at Raging Rivers Waterpark. Full time, I’ve been with the park district for nine years.

I enjoy spending my free time with my family and friends, attending, or playing in a sporting event, working out, and cooking with my husband.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

My family is my No. 1 motivator. Outside of that, I like a challenge. I’m a very competitive person, and I like the variety of responsibilities that my profession gives me. I’m very thankful to have a great mentor that continues to challenge me.

I’ve had to adapt when, inevitably, things don’t go as planned and be open to change. I like to plan and see my plans through to their successful conclusion. I have learned the importance of being adaptive, and I believe that embracing change is necessary for growth.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Discovering opportunities and thinking through solutions. Being a local non-profit healthcare organization allows us to respond quickly and dream big. Working with an amazing team of professionals and extraordinary board members is how the great legacy of Missouri Slope continues. I am also motivated by challenges. Personal challenges such as exercising early each morning, bike races, marathons, or golf tournaments definitely get me going. Being part of others success is extremely motivating as well. I enjoy helping others reach their goals and sharing in their celebrations.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Getting the first professional job when all job postings prefer experience. You have to be open to wherever opportunity leads you. It led me to a small community where I learned the important lessons I needed in order to be where I am today. The global pandemic caused by COVID. It affected everything we do and ramifications continue to this day. Getting through these challenges and whatever future ones we have yet to face is only possible for me by trusting in God each step of the way even when all feels lost.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

I got into healthcare because I wanted a career where I could help others. What I’ve realized is that I have received much more than I have put in. I have grown in my faith, as a professional, as a husband, and as a father from all the connections and stories I have experienced. My advice is to choose a career that helps you grow as a person, not necessarily in title or compensation. Those things can come and go. Growth in mind, body, and spirit will remain.

• Time: The greatest challenge one faces is time; it waits for no one and demands effective management skills.

Growing up in Wimbledon, N.D., I always thought I would thrive in a big city. After graduating from the University of Mary with a bachelor’s in communications, I spent nearly seven years in local television news all over North Dakota, hoping to make the big show! Shortly after Corbin was born, I quickly realized that my family came first.

I have a pretty cool job at KLJ Engineering that allows me to set goals and gives me the support and opportunities to meet and exceed them. I work to make it a career rather than a steppingstone for our employees. Recruiting, onboarding, and engaging them makes my job one of the best in that there are so many opportunities to make a difference in their day-to-day work and in our projects by hiring the right people for the right positions.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Change is what motivates me. I started at KLJ Engineering as an intern and have grown immensely since then. I witnessed change in the last 10 years. Each day I am provided the ability to start over if I need to but also make a difference in doing so.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

One challenge was finding my passion. What would drive me to work every day until I could retire? I thought it was broadcast journalism, I thought it was human resources, I thought maybe employee engagement. Until I was able to put my goals on paper, I couldn’t really figure it out. I want to be a champion for my company and those around me and I’ve found my passion by combining my strengths and setting continuous goals.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Be patient, but persistent. Tell someone what you want, what your goals are, and how you plan to get there. I always tell our new hires to be open and honest with your supervisor, project managers, and mentors about your goals. You want to be CEO one day? Tell me about it. It doesn’t matter what stage of your career you’re in.

1 MILLION CUPS BISMARCK/MANDAN

Tell us about yourself and your role within your business.

A: 1 Million Cups (1MC) is a free, weekly program that gives local businesses and community builders the opportunity to share their ideas and engage their community for advice and feedback. A small group of people serve on the organizing committee that puts on the weekly, one-hour event, including local entrepreneurs, employees of private sector businesses and public sector representatives. Our current members come from the Chamber EDC, the NDWBC, ND SBDC, Gizmonics, Threefold, Co Schedule and ECI Systems. We receive additional support from other public and private sector sponsors. One of the coolest things about our team is that no single group owns the organization. Instead, we are all equal partners, working together to connect local entrepreneurs over a million cups of coffee (not literally).

Briefly tell us the history behind 1 Million Cups Bismarck/Mandan and how you got started.

A: 1MC was created by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation based in Kansas City in 2012. Our Chapter was founded October 9, 2013 by Marlo Anderson, Ellen Brannan, and Scott Wild. The story is that these three traveled to KC to convince Kauffman to let BismarckMandan have a chapter even though our population didn’t meet their 500K minimum threshold. We were the first 1MC in the state and have remained one of the best attended in the US. Over the past nearly 10 years we have had 20,046 attendees, 411 speakers, 198 livestreamed events and over 20 different people involved as organizers.

How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted 1 Million Cups Bismarck/Mandan?

A: Growth has meant a steady stream of new businesses to welcome to our stage. We are continually amazed by the number of creative and exciting things that people are doing in our community. 1MC provides them with a platform to get the word out about their business and it also engages the community in providing feedback, support and suggestions to help the business owner be successful.

What trends are taking place in your industry?

A: Honestly, the trend in our community for grassroots organizations that support entrepreneurship is a bit scary. We have had some wonderful events/groups go by the wayside; Disruptwell, Makewell, Start Bismarck, and the IDEA Center are all no more. That helps fuel our passion for keeping 1MC going strong after almost 10 years.

Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with?

A: Covid was certainly a challenge for us, but we went virtual and didn’t miss a week. The side benefit is that we have kept streaming as an option for our audience who can’t make it to Dakota Stage on Wednesday mornings. Our list of organizers flexes as people change work responsibilities. Some members have had to step away but other folks in the community have stepped in to help.

What does the future 1 Million Cups Bismarck/ Mandan look like and the industry as a whole look like to you?

A: We are looking forward to the next ten years of 1MC. We hope to include more value added things to our programming like random acts of art, evening events, quarterly breakfasts, and other things we haven’t even thought of yet.

1 Million Cups Bismarck/Mandan became a Chamber EDC member in 2023, why did you decide to join?

A: We decided to join the Chamber EDC because they have been incredible partners on this journey. There was a time in our 1MC history when the organizers felt burned out and it appeared that the program would end. It was the Chamber EDC who stepped in and called a group of us together to sustain the event. We are so grateful for their role in our history and their ongoing role in our success. We’re just embarrassed that we didn’t become members sooner.

What should other Chamber EDC members know about 1 Million Cups Bismarck/Mandan that may assist them?

A: There is this valuable event that happens every Wednesday morning at 9:00am at Dakota Stage. Attendees who come to support the person on stage usually walk away feeling like they gained at least as much from the experience as they gave to others –charged up and full of ideas for their own business. We have plenty of free coffee, courtesy of Cappuccino on Collins, and everyone is welcome to attend. Come join us to caffeinate and connect!

CHAMBER EDC ASSISTS RURAL MORTON COUNTY BUSINESS

Chamber EDC staff assisted with a business expansion of a rural Morton County business. Revive Equine, LLC provides equine therapy services to horses across the state and upper Midwest. It is a state-of-the-art facility that houses the latest technological equipment designed to promote safe and rapid advancement for horses recovering from an injury, or simply conditioning.

The Chamber EDC staff assisted with a Morton County Development Fund grant of up to $25,000 that will provide the local match for BND’s Flex PACE interest buy-down program. Revive Equine, LLC currently employs one full-time person and one part-time employee near Almont. To learn more about the Morton County Development Fund contact the Chamber EDC office.

CHAMBER EDC HOSTS EDUCATOR EXPERIENCE

Throughout several of the Chamber EDC’s workforce development efforts there is an emphasis placed on connecting Bismarck-Mandan’s education community and business community. This is done to help educate our educators on the occupation opportunities available in the community with the idea that the educators take that information back into their classrooms and pass it along to their students. To assist in accomplishing this the Chamber EDC hosts one of its premier workforce development programs, Educator Experience.

This year’s Educator Experience was held the week of June 19-23. Educator Experience, or E2, is eight half-day sessions with each session focused on an industry in Bismarck-Mandan. The sessions are traditionally hosted at a business within the industry and presenters explain occupations within the industry with an emphasis on education requirements, skill sets needed, and wage/salary expectations.

TAX DEPARTMENT RELEASES 1ST QUARTER FIGURES

In June, the North Dakota Tax Department released the 1st quarter taxable sales and purchases figures. Overall, the State of North Dakota reported a 21.4% increase from the 1st quarter of 2022. Locally, Bismarck reported an increase from the 2022 1st quarter numbers showing a 5.8% increase, meanwhile, Mandan reported a 9.3% increase from the same period in 2022.

Nagel comes to the Chamber EDC from the University of Mary where she has served since 2017, most recently as Vice President for Public Affairs since 2020. Prior to her role at the University of Mary, Nagel was employed at Aetna CVS Health from 1994 – 2017 in a number of leadership roles, most notably as the Senior Director of Operations leading the company’s Bismarck office along with others around the globe.

“For nearly 20 years, I’ve been honored to serve the Chamber EDC in a number of different volunteer roles including Chair of the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan Steering Committee and Board Chair in 2017,” said Nagel. “So I can’t think of a better opportunity to give back to a community that has already given me and my family so much.”

Nagel was named the new Chamber EDC President & CEO after an exhaustive, nation-wide search led by a Search Committee that included both Chamber EDC Leadership & Members. She will succeed outgoing Chamber EDC President & CEO Brian Ritter who will resigned on July 14, 2023 to assume a new as Sanford Health’s Head of Market Affairs.

I am excited to be serving in the role of Office & Accounting Manager here at the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC. Since interning with the Chamber EDC, I have come to a greater appreciation of the Bismarck-Mandan Community and all the qualities with make this area unique and an exceptional place in which to live. I will be the primary contact for billing and any other financial-related questions anyone might have, and I am greatly looking forward to getting to know more of our members.

I grew up in Seattle Washington but came to North Dakota in 2019 as a student at the University of Mary. I fell in love with North Dakota and made the decision to make Bismarck my home this spring after graduating with a degree in finance and banking. My previous experience has included team management, catering, and healthcare, where I developed a greater understanding and passion for service.

I currently live in Bismarck and enjoy the abundance of activities which the area has to offer, a substantial portion of which includes exploring the natural beauty of North Dakota, finding new places to eat, and connecting with the Bis-Man community at large. USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT RECOGNIZES BRAVERA AS TOP LENDING PARTNER

Throughout the month of June and in celebration of Homeownership Month, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director for North Dakota Erin Oban recognized Bravera as one of the top three North Dakota lending partners working with USDA Rural Development to support rural homeownership thus far in fiscal year 2022. Bravera has helped rural individuals and families buy homes through USDA Rural Development’s Single Family Housing Guaranteed Loan Program.

DCN RECEIVES $19.7 MILLION GRANT TO REDUCE COST OF NETWORK EXPANSION

North Dakota, one of the best-connected states in the country, is about to get even more connected to reliable, affordable broadband.

The DCN Statewide Middle Mile Backbone Upgrade is a $43.8 million project. It is comprised of two elements: adding middle mile fiber route miles and upgrading electronics to support the increased network demand to terabit speed. To accomplish the network upgrade, four of DCN’s Owner companies are also participating in this grant: BEK Communications, based in Steele, N.D.; Dakota Central, based in Carrington, N.D.; MLGC, based in Enderlin, N.D.; and RTC Networks, based in Parshall, N.D.

To help fund the upgrade, DCN has been awarded a $19.7 million grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), with the remaining $24 million coming from DCN and the participating subrecipients. Over the past decade, DCN’s 13 Owner companies and DCN have invested more than $1 billion in North Dakota’s broadband infrastructure.

“The demand for broadband capacity continues to grow, and this grant provides critical funding that allows DCN and our Owners to continue providing customers reliable, high-speed connectivity at an affordable price,” explained Seth Arndorfer, DCN CEO. “This middle mile infrastructure provides the crucial connection from the greater internet to the end user. It’s not something we think about every day, but without a reliable middle mile, commerce grinds to a halt.”

“Middle mile” refers to the segment of a broadband network that connects the user’s core network to the local network, connecting the global internet to the end user. The middle mile typically serves as the backbone for a region and does not directly connect end-user locations. DCN will add five new network segments across the state: Bismarck to Carrington, Jamestown to Carrington, Devils Lake to Carrington, Fargo to Carrington, and Alexander to Max. These segments will add 612.99 leased fiber route miles to DCN’s middle mile backbone infrastructure. BEK will add 28.4 miles to their middle mile backbone infrastructure, and Dakota Central will add 233.2 miles to their middle mile backbone infrastructure. Altogether, the project will add 874.59 fiber route miles across the state.

These additional fiber miles will create a fully meshed topology within North Dakota, meaning that if there is any kind of problem at one point in the state, it can seamlessly reroute and not affect the entire network, adding redundancy, resiliency, and survivability to this critical infrastructure.

The second element, upgrading to terabit-capable electronics will support the increased network demand and ensure the network has the capacity to fulfill the needs of anchor institutions such as schools, hospitals, and public safety entities as they provide critical services to the citizens of North Dakota.

“This program is unique because DCN’s middle mile backbone infrastructure connects all of North Dakota through our 13 Owner companies and our combined fiber infrastructure,” added Arndorfer. “By expanding DCN’s fiber optic backbone and network capacity, all North Dakotans benefit. This network upgrade will enable DCN to provide massive capacity to enterprises, hyperscalers, and our Owner companies with terabit speeds, furthering North Dakota’s position to support emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, precision ag, and autonomy.”

It is estimated that the entire project will be complete by year end 2025.

North Dakota’s anchor institutions recognized the need for DCN’s grant application. DCN received 25 letters of support from officials and entities ranging from Governor Doug Burgum and multiple state agencies to regional healthcare systems, land grant universities, and public safety entities. The letters of support demonstrate that public and private entities across the state understand the need for this infrastructure that is crucial to the vitality of North Dakota.

SANFORD HEALTH PRESIDENT & CEO TO ADDRESS SOLUTIONS TO HEALTH CARE

Addressing solutions to major health care headwinds such as workforce challenges, mounting financial pressures and disruption from external factors is the theme of a leadership panel Sanford Health president and CEO Bill Gassen has been invited to join next week.

The AHA Leadership Summit takes place July 16-18 in Seattle. It brings together senior health care executives, clinicians and experts in the field presenting innovative approaches for delivering better care and greater value, ensuring financial stability, addressing workforce challenges and improving the health care consumer experience through operational excellence, creative partnerships and redefined delivery models.

Gassen will participate in a panel entitled: Weathering the Storm – Major Headwinds in 2023 and Beyond. He will be joined by Judy Rich, RN, MSN, president and CEO of TMC Health, Jamie Orlikoff, president of Orlikoff & Associates Inc. and national advisor on governance and leadership to the AHA. Jeffery Adler, CEO of IPROTEAN, will moderate the discussion.

“It is a privilege for Sanford Health to have the opportunity to offer our unique perspective through the lens of rural care delivery with the American Hospital Association and this group of accomplished leaders who share our commitment to advancing innovative solutions for the challenges we face,” said Gassen. “Sanford Health has leaned into solving the challenges of rural care delivery by prioritizing investments in patient care, new innovative care delivery models and breakthrough initiatives to attract and retain the caregivers we need today and cultivate the workforce we know we will need tomorrow.”

Gassen will discuss strategic initiatives at Sanford Health focused on removing barriers to access, addressing health disparities, serving our communities and investing in the people and places of our region to improve quality of life and drive better health for all, no matter where people live or the health challenges they face.

“The Mandan Public School District acknowledges that our community is located on the traditional lands of the Cheyenne, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, and Lakota nations,” said Travis Albers, Title VI Coordinator for Mandan Public Schools. “We also recognize and respect the Indigenous people as the original keepers of this land and the everlasting connection with their traditional territory. Indigenous nations and their history are not just things of the past. They are, and have been, essential components of the history and future of our community. The updated MPS logo emphasizes the struggles and achievements that represents the rich and culturally diverse make up of our great community, but more importantly, it represents the continuing collaboration to create a better society for all.”

The design process began with sketches by Native American artist, Kolan Snider, and brought to digital life by Sean Thorenson, a local graphic designer. “I feel very honored to have been asked to be part of the Braves logo update,” said Thorenson. “As a Mandan grad, we were all familiar with the current mascot, but what many probably don’t know is that it was done by Mandan High’s art teacher at the time — the late, great Diane Boschee. Ms. Boschee was one of several mentors that encouraged me to pursue art as a career so it’s especially humbling to know that this new graphic will now represent the Mandan Braves. I wanted the update to reflect the tradition, power and spirit of the original. The new right-facing direction is symbolically forward-moving and the expression more focused and determined – qualities that I believe represent Mandan well.”

"Our logo refresh represents an exciting chapter in our school district's journey," said Superintendent Dr. Mike Bitz. “The design process took place over several months as our top priority was creating something that represented our schools and community and maintained our long history as the Mandan Braves. We wanted our new logo to reflect the history of Mandan. Our community has significant history with indigenous people that we want to honor and carry forward.”

The logo refresh will be implemented across all communication channels, including the district's official website, social media platforms, stationery, and signage. As we open a new high school in 2024, this unified visual identity will enhance the district's presence, instill a sense of pride among students, teachers, and staff, and strengthen its connection with parents, alumni, and the broader community.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT & ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) is currently accepting applications for programs that support affordable rental housing development and provide homeownership and rental assistance for low-income households.

"These programs aim to strengthen communities by addressing a number of housing challenges," said Dave Flohr, NDHFA executive director. Increasing the availability of homes for low-wage workers, those who are aging or have disabilities, and those experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness will not only be a service to those individuals and families but will allow for community growth as well."

NDHFA is accepting applications for four housing programs: the federally funded HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME), Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), and the National Housing Trust Fund (HTF), and the state-funded Housing Incentive Fund (HIF).

In North Dakota, HOME supports housing production and funds homeownership and rental assistance programs with approximately $2.6 million available.

LIHTC encourages private sector investment in affordable housing through tax incentives. Property owners receive the credits for up to 10 years based on their capital investment and a project’s level of commitment to low-income tenancy. Credits of approximately $3.1 million are available.

The HTF’s purpose is to increase and preserve the supply of housing for extremely low-income households, including individuals and families experiencing homelessness, and has approximately $2.8 million available.

The application process for the programs is competitive with the top-scoring projects awarded conditional commitments from NDHFA. Applicants must provide evidence that there is a need for the proposed project or program, and that the costs are reasonable. The application deadline is 5 p.m., CDT on Sept. 30, 2023.

Q: WHAT IS CHATGPT?

A: ChatGPT is an AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot that can answer questions. It is one of the products created by OpenAI and has been transforming our lives since last Fall, even if you don’t use it. It is a natural language processing tool using conversational and generative AI. It can create resumes, summarize large amounts of text, solve difficult problems, and create computer codes. Students have found this useful to create their essays and reports, leading some schools to block access. Anti-plagiarism tools are not yet advanced enough to detect ChatGPT generated content, however, the writing style is polite and conversational and may be a giveaway. It also cannot use metaphors, irony, or sarcasm.

Businesspeople have used it to create content for blogs, speeches, and emails. Be sure to review information ChatGPT provides as it may be incorrect. The program is designed to put words together that statistically make sense. The data ChatGPT pulls from is limited to what is put in, current events and information up to September of 2021. The program does not have access to the internet.

As for safety, OpenAI recommends users limit personal/sensitive information shared with the chatbot. The usage policies prohibit illegal and hateful activity. Chats may be monitored by humans for compliance and future research to improve services.

Q: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SECTION 179 AND BONUS DEPRECIATION?

A: When business taxpayers purchase capital equipment, tax rules spread the cost over a number of years as depreciation deductions. Both Section 179 and bonus depreciation allow taxpayers to instead deduct most or all the cost of qualifying assets in the year they are purchased. Section 179 allows taxpayers to elect current deduction for selected qualifying assets, subject to limits.

The maximum Section 179 deduction is $1,160,000 for 2023. The deduction phases out dollar-for-dollar if more than $2,890,000 of qualifying assets are placed in service during a year, limiting its usefulness for larger businesses. The deduction is limited to business income, so Section 179 cannot generate operating losses. Bonus depreciation also allows businesses to deduct a portion of qualifying asset purchases. The tax law temporarily allowed 100% bonus depreciation, which is scheduled to phase out over five years; for 2023 only 80% of asset costs qualify. The Section 179 limits do not apply, so it can generate operating losses.
