ALOHA. NO DOUBT WE’VE ALL

overdosed on the C & V-word combo recently. While there may be no magic cure in sight yet, there are some positive steps we can take not just for ourselves, but also for our community. International travel and quarantine are not needed for a dose of the Hawaiian culture of Aloha. Practicing Aloha goes beyond saying “hello and goodbye”, it is a way of expressing all the good things between us including compassion, kindness, grace, and love that may become too easily forgotten right now as our self-survival instinct kicks in. To understand Aloha more, perhaps we should take a break from the C & V-word combo dominating our screens and Google: Aloha Meaning

Changing musical direction, it is time to amp it at La Latin Party at Woody’s for the hottest D-Floor on Thursdays from 10 pm. With rhythms spinning from the DJ booth it’s time to get down and learn some hip-shakin' moves thanks to the Latino grooves. Come Friday from 6 pm to 8 pm why not head to the Lone Goat Gallery for the opening night of Hannah Cutts: Buoys will be Buoys exhibition. With pieces on display created using found objects such as vintage linoleum, fishing floats, surfboard fins and more it promises to be something for our eyes and minds to explore. On Saturday you can get outside to help Mother Nature out at the Main Beach Clean-up from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. The good roosters at Positive Change for Marine Life will meet you at Apex Park to help you get started. Also on Saturday, but at Clarkes Beach, it's the Disabled Surfers Byron Bay Hands-On Day. This is a chance to volunteer yourself to help disabled people get out for a surfing experience. Volunteers can register at Main Beach at 9 am, and you'll get to enjoy a free BBQ lunch too. Music fans should head to The Northern on Saturday night for a night of psych and surf rock with Pasiflorez. The guys met in Byron and have just released an 8-track album. If mushies are on your radar following the rains then the Fungal Wizardry 101 Workshop is the most fungi fun you can have without getting trippy. Good things grow on Tuesday at 6 pm at the Byron Community Centre. The $49 ticket includes a take-home oyster mushroom kit, for info: Facebook: Urban Kulture Let the magic of Aloha be with us all.

On a practical and local level, instead of clearing supermarket shelves a shopping trip to a local farmers market will boost your immune system along with the local economy. Byron Farmers Markets runs on Thursdays 7 am to 11 am, Mullum Farmers Market runs on Fridays from 7 am to 11 am, Bangalow Farmers Market runs on Saturdays from 7 am to 11 am and New Brighton Farmers Market runs from 8 am to 11 am. Fresh, and local is best. Now if you recently dreamt of playing the flute then Thursday is your lucky night as you can learn to toot one at the Ancient Flute Worksop at The Timber Slab Factory on Coolamon Scenic Drive. It’s a 6:30 pm start. With the flute range including Indian, Arabic and Chinese variations you’ll soon be playing a cultural melody before you enjoy a sound relaxation massage with 3 didge players, singing bowls and a sound therapist. The suggested donation is $20.

MY MOTHER ALWAYS USED TO SAY TO US AS YOUNGSTERS

“Be prepared - everything comes in threes”. Sure enough, two accidents around the house would be followed by a third. Two rainy weekends and a third would be on its way. Two illnesses in the family inevitably, unfortunately, would be followed by a third. This rule only seemed to apply to bad news. Two winners at the races never lead to a third – despite many years of trying! Recent events have been following this same pattern. First the bushfires, then the floods, and just when we had hit a low point, along comes the coronavirus. Wham, bam, thankyou Ma’am! Only this time, I wonder if three will really be the end of the cycle? A fourth headline is emerging, and, being superstitious, I prefer not to name it here. No, I don’t mean climate change – I mean the “R” word. Perhaps “4” is the new “3”. It has always been important. It is the only number whose name in English has the same number of letters as its value. There are 4 seasons in a year; 4 directions of the compass; 4 elements - earth, air, water and fire. Our calendars require a leap year every 4th year to stay in sync; our homes and offices are dominated by 4 sided shapes - walls, bricks, doors, windows, tables, computers, TV screens. Playing cards have 4 suits; the greatest ever band is the “Fab 4” (in case you need reminding – the Beatles); and the world’s most popular books follow the mis-adventures of Harry Potter and the Four Houses of Hogwarts Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Even The Three Musketeers needed a fourth member to legitimise their heroics – so Athos, Aramis and Porthos were joined by d'Artagnan. My son once informed me that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were an updated version of the Musketeers. Why else would the 4 heroes have such oldfashioned names - Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo and Raphael? I hope Mum’s right, and 3 events sees out this cycle. Or that, as important and inevitable as 4 may be, this “R” (the financial dip we can’t mention) is short and sharp, and quickly followed by event 5. A “Good R”- a Rainbow - very often emerges from the gloom, once the sun comes out. If we stay alert, healthy and happy, and as always, stay chilled, we may even find that there is indeed a pot of gold! Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: Out of My Province ARTIST: Nadia Reid RELEASED: March 2020 GENRE: Folk singer songwriter BIO: NZ singer/guitarist described by the Guardian as

“an understated, wise guide through uncertain territory”. With an impressive choral background, Nadia was a member of the Queen's madrigal choir and won New Zealand Choral Federation Millennium Trophy during highschool. Now, she's released three albums, done shows with Ryan Adams and received an almighty round of applause from music critics across the globe.

WHAT TO EXPECT: An album that perfectly compliments

the current arrival of a soft and beautiful autumn. This album mirrors the season's feelings of nostalgically bidding summer farewell whilst moving forward into the next cycle. Its songs range from favouring elements of intimacy and honesty to focusing on stronger undertones in drums and bass. This album doesn't quite let you fall into the winter lull just yet. It also goes hand in hand with the recent international women's day, sharing in the general celebration of the feminine.

WHAT WE LIKE: The focus that folk music can place on its singers is not lost on Nadia. She's crafted a vocal style that is uniquely hers, with her low tones flicking up playfully and a slight country twang that gives her songs warmth. Possibly it's her choral background that influences the vibrato she so easily utilises. Listen in to her lyrics, especially in the song Heart to Ride. Her writing perfectly captures the fragile, open heart of a golden love. STANDOUT TRACKS: All of My Love, Oh Canada, Other Side of the Wheel.

PERFECT FOR: Quiet moments with those you love, cherishing nature in this beautiful season. LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Aldous Harding, Julia Jacklin. Recommended by Delphi O'Heart.

This week's mantra DECLARE YOURSELF WHOLE.

BELONGING IS YOUR BIRTHRIGHT: PART 3/3 READ PART 2 IN LAST WEEK’S ISSUE OF BYRON BAZAAR! Can you imagine how the unfoldment of your days might be smoother and more reverent if you just believed that you did not need to earn your worth? That belonging was already yours? Because it is. Belonging is yours to claim.

AUSTRALIAN MIGRATION ADVICE

Want to stay in Australia? Experienced and registered professional, book your free consultation with me - Chelsea 0403 189 670

Take it. Tuck that knowing into the helix of your heart. Imagine how the world might shift around you if you suddenly declared yourself whole. Worthy. Not just loveable, but beloved. Imagine how restlessness and fear might dissolve and fall like dust at your feet. How you might just leave it there. Walk away. Eyes no longer shrouded by the veil of fear. Heart no longer longing for belonging. Body and mind freed so that a lightness of being ascends through you. The sunrise of your soul, illuminating the whole world around you and everyone in it.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

BIG STUFF IS HAPPENING THIS WEEK!

On Friday, the day of the Autumn Equinox, Mars’ union with giant Jupiter in Capricorn is exact. This is a very businesslike and entrepreneurial moment in time and almost anything seems possible; a great amount of courage and ambition is available. If an opportunity opens up, go with it but make sure you stay grounded in practical considerations. Simultaneously the Sun moves into fiery and excitable Aries, ready for inspired action. And as if that is not enough, Mars unites with Pluto on Monday while Venus forms a sextile with Neptune. This is a very intense day; obsession, deep emotions and longings may become overwhelming. Hard physical work or sports may be therapeutic, but don’t take it too far! Also on Sunday Saturn moves into inventive and socially-oriented Aquarius, for the first time since 1994! Here Saturn stands for disciplined restructuring of all the parts of society that have proved to be out of date, and his goal is innovation that assists the whole of humanity, not just an elite group. Globally and personally there may be more tolerance for people and ideas that don’t fit the old norm, and thinking outside the box finds more mainstream acceptance. Saturn in Aquarius favours an intellectual and emotionally-detached point of view, while holding up the banner for reform. From now until the end of June we get a taste of what he is suggesting, but then he retreats back into Capricorn until the end of this year. Saturn takes until March 2023 to traverse Aquarius. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

With the Princess of Cups drawn you might feel quite sensitive, protective or even vulnerable this week. What if you don’t fight it, but rather enjoy it? Allow yourself the freedom to be tender and express your truthful feelings. It’s like thinking with your heart…

h TAURUS

The 8 of Wands symbolises lively action and quick reaction. You might be receiving good news or realising an opportunity right in front of you and you have to seize the moment to make it work for you. Don’t waste any time sitting on the fence, and try to be very precise in your communications.

i GEMINI

The Ace of Swords harbours the gift of great clarity. Sometimes when you think too much about a pressing issue you just get more confused and doubtful. Not this time! Your knowingness comes from deep within and as you follow your gutfeeling things become crystal clear. Great insights might be gained this week.

j CANCER

The Star Tarot card offers great inspiration and faith in a fruitful future. Trust your abilities, count your blessings and amp up your creative output. Your endeavour must be bringing you lots of joy otherwise there won’t be a good flow of productivity. Think quality not quantity.

BY GISELA

k LEO

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

The Temperance Tarot card appears as a reminder that there are many shades, many colours, not just black and white. Can you be an alchemist, someone skilled in tempering, blending and harmonising? As you find the common thread in seeming polarities you find a new perspective and understanding of your reality.

The World Tarot card symbolises a breath of fresh air and excitement about new beginnings. This is the time to set yourself free from old limitations and to welcome your true, individual path. From this place you don’t ask yourself, what you should do; you concentrate on what you WANT to do, and you go for it.

a LIBRA

The 6 of Wands represents victory and success. For the fair-minded Libran this means being acknowledged and recognised for creating a win-win situation. Anything else would leave you unsatisfied. This week your great negotiation skills, combined with patience and insight into the needs of your opponent guarantee a great outcome.

b SCORPIO

The Judgement Tarot card nudges you to remember that for a true understanding and fair appraisal of a situation, you have to go beyond your emotional reaction and take a higher perspective. From there you may awaken to new, interesting possibilities, which give you more choice than those you are currently invested in.

The Lovers Tarot card is all about the art and craft of relating. This week the connection to your inner lover and/or the quality of your intimate love relationship comes up for revision. The basic questions are how to stay true to yourself and how to bridge apparent polarities, oppositions or paradoxes with your partner.

When the Death Tarot card appears you are in for profound change! A phase of your life comes to an end whether you like it or not, and the sooner you visualise the new goals for this innovative chapter in your life the more efficient and successful you can be.

e AQUARIUS

The Justice Tarot card, in synchronicity with Saturn moving into your sign, inspires you to bring more clarity balance and simplicity into your life. Clutter and chaos create confusion and this week could be the perfect time to go ‘zen’ on all levels.

f PISCES

With Sun, Mercury and Neptune in your sign and the Magician Tarot card drawn this the time to make your creative or romantic dreams come true. The ability to create magical results comes with applying yourself whole-heartedly while staying centred, focused and resourceful, in particular in the way you communicate.

O BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: The Great Questions of Tomorrow AUTHOR: David Rothkopf NUMBER OF PAGES: 107 LISTENING TIME: 3 hours 6 minutes PRICE: $19.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: This is a book in a series put

together by TED books – called “small books, big ideas”. As the title indicates, each chapter is focussed on a big question – such as “Who am I?”; “Who are we?”; “Who rules?”; “What is money?”. Before you roll your eyes, each of these is then broken down into a number of smaller, bite sized, and more approachable and relevant chunks. The style is designed to get you thinking about the world by pondering the important questions of our times – rather than seeking to provide complete answers.

WHO IT'S FOR: Everyone interested in how (Western) societies operate, and how we set and play by the rules that inevitably govern us. And of course, how and why we might want to improve those rules.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: This is not a new release

– actually being published for the first time in 2017. Like all the books in the series it is easy to pick up, easy to flip through, and full of interesting though sometimes complex ideas. With the (actually NOT) unprecedented displacement caused by the Coronavirus, it is good to remind ourselves that events such as this have happened before – and humans have always found a way forward.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “We are on the cusp of a sweeping

revolution that will change every facet of our lives. In this pivotal moment, what are the great questions we need to ask to navigate our way forward in this complex future?”

DEAR KEENWA,

This is a test for the cosmos. For three weeks, and three days, I have been sending you mail Keenwa. Not one single letter has been published. I know it's been a mercury retrograde, and my preferred form of communication is ESP, but if this one passes, we will indeed know astrology is a true science considering mercury has now finally stationed direct. - Fated Union

DEAR FATED UNION,

Yes, yes, all is above board here. The computers are omm-ing, the press chanting. We have had our Byron Bazaar sharing circle to kick off the issue. The delivery guy has blessed his bike tyres, and begun his rounds in bare feet. The graphics fella has written his intentions for an abundant drop. We have all surfed, meditated, drank 'buchu and coconut lattes (even the big boss), and dropped our kids at their Steiner Schools. I don't know about astrology, but this publication is Byron legit.

DEAR KEENWA,

Is it just me, or is P.M.S truth serum? There are a million light years between where I want to be and where I am atm, and not even my mountain of choccie stash will fuel me enough to get there. Also being able to read the thoughts of everyone I pass is just so draining. Any ideas? - Touche Thursday

DEAR TOUCHE THURSDAY,

In the old days of the red tent, you would have been chillin' and Netflixing with your babes, well, in a red tent. Without kids. Without hubby. But alas the capitalist society we live in wants us to soldier on and produce, and then calls us mean names when we are cranky about it. Listen to your body. Refuse to cook dinner, go to school meetings, and grocery shop until you muster up the energy to attack your goals again. This is the role-modelling our sons and daughters need.

HAVE A QUESTION FOR KEENWA?

Cara Gallagher WEDDING CELEBRANT AND VOICE-OVER ARTIST

TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN BYRON. I grew up in Nambucca Heads and went to high school in Coffs Harbour. We spent about 10 years in Sydney working and playing, and then after my husband and I started a family we wanted to get back to a country lifestyle and be closer to family. The Mid North Coast seemed like the perfect place to lay down some roots and give our kids a childhood like our own. YOU’RE A VOICE OVER ARTIST AND A WEDDING CELEBRANT – DO THESE ROLES SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER IN ANY WAY? They do actually. I'm very good at cold reading, meaning I can look at a script and quickly work out the way it needs to sound, which is important in both roles. You also need good people skills in both, as you're always working with new people. And the schedules seem to fit in well - most weddings are performed late in the afternoon or on weekends, whereas the voice work is 9-5. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT BYRON WHAT WOULD IT BE? More understanding and acceptance between different groups of people and less judgement – but that's a universal problem and not something that Byron has a monopoly on.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC TO CHILL OUT TO? At home you'll find me listening to all sorts of music; The Beatles, Father John Misty, Beyonce, LCD Sounds System, the Beastie Boys, Leon Bridges, Dope Lemon – it's quite eclectic. My teenage heart still belongs to Radiohead and Weezer. Go check out modernloveceremonies.com.au to learn more about Cara and to get in touch with one of the Shires true local legends.

COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – “I LOVE …. chocolate, surfing, dancing and spending quality time with loved ones.”

IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? Once I went to a “W” party as Watermelon Girl. I carved a helmet from a watermelon, donned a cape and wore my undies on the outside of my tights. I also went as a chilli to a Mexican party once – so I guess fruit and veg are my go to. BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD BRUSH TURKEYS. HAVE YOU EVER HAD ONE GATE CRASH A WEDDING?
