Welcome to Sunriver
W
illkommen, Benvenuto, Yokosou and Bienvenido are a few of the many ways to say welcome. The word “welcome” originated from the Old English word “wilcumian,” an exclamation of a kind greeting. The Sunriver Area Chamber of Commerce warmly welcomes you and thanks you for choosing Sunriver as your place to vacation, own a business or call home. What makes Sunriver incredibly wonderful is that there truly is something for everyone to enjoy, from reading a book and sunbathing at one of the pools, golfing at the award-winning courses, skiing or mountain biking at Mt. Bachelor or casting a line at a nearby mountain lake. The Chamber invites you to take time to admire sunrises and sunsets, rediscover the night sky’s brilliant beauty, gaze at the Cascade Mountains, listen to the birds, learn the area’s history and explore the nearby rivers, lakes and mountains. “A Vision That Came to Life,” reads a plaque at the Sunriver Lodge honoring co-founders John and Betty Gray. John Gray once said, “Ecology ‘talk’ need not just be talk. A total community can be built in sympathy with the land, and with the animals and with the people.” Discover the countless harmonious bridges of nature, animals and people throughout Sunriver, from the paved bike/ walking paths to the open spaces. The Sunriver Area Chamber of Commerce along with The Village at Sunriver, Sunriver Resort and the Sunriver Owners Association welcome you to the “playground of the Pacific Northwest” and wish you a magical visit that leaves you wanting to visit again and again. Visit sunriverchamber.com, email exec@sunriverchamber.com or call 541-593-8149 to let us know how we can assist you to discover everything amazing about Sunriver.

Interpretive Trail Signs
H
Poet T.S. Eliot once said, “The journey not the arrival matters.”
is words capture the spirit and adventure of exploring the 20 Interpretive Trails signs on Sunriver’s pathways. The first ten signs were installed in 2005, the next six in 2006 and the final four in 2008. It’s well worth the adventure to slow down, read the signs and reflect on the Sunriver area’s unique history and environment as well as the men and women who spearheaded the installation of the signs. The Sunriver Anglers Club created the signs to showcase Sunriver’s geology, history, ecology, flora and fauna. Whether you are a walk, run or bike ride, take a moment to slow down and read the signs. Or challenge family and friends to see who can photograph all 20 signs first, creating your own treasure hunt to learn about the Sunriver area. According to an article in The Sunriver Scene dated August 2017, Rod Juranek and Sean Cracraft presented the idea for interpretive signs to the Sunriver Anglers Club members, who endorsed the idea. Doug Vakoc, Tom Kelly and Jack McDonald “stepped up to lead critical components of the effort.” In a recent interview, Vakoc shared he had recently retired from Freightliner when he was assigned with finding people to research and write intelligent and interesting text.
14 2022-23 | SUNRIVER MAGAZINE
Vakoc said the project showed the community’s commitment and cooperation to take the project from an idea to a realization, adding that many people played a role in various parts of the project. “We also had to raise $20,000 for the signs, so we sold dedicated memorials for each sign,”Vakoc said, adding he and his wife, Jane, sponsored sign #9, “River Hydrology.” The undertakings of any project require dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s. Although many of the volunteers had little or no experience in creating interpretive signs, Vakoc said the volunteers had retired from successful careers, providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to accomplish the task. Vakoc praised Jack McDonald for the forethought of manufacturing and installing signs that could endure Central Oregon’s weather. A retired aeronautical engineer at McDonnellDouglas, McDonnell visited existing informational signs at the High Desert Museum and Bend’s Pilot Butte. He encourages people who want to understand and appreciate Sunriver’s history and nature to visit the signs. “The signs tell people something about the area while also enjoying themselves on a bike ride or a walk,” he said.
History A longtime member of the Sunriver Anglers Club, Vakoc said the signs aligned with the club’s “dedication to preservation, education and promotion of responsible angling in the High Desert region of Central Oregon. The informational signs share the names of fish, wildlife, wildflowers, trees and more. Whether you are interested in learning about “Waging War on Our Noxious Weeds,” “The Lively Residents of Lake Aspen,” “Our Happy Wildflowers Delight the Eye,” or “Become a Savvy Tree Detective,” you are bound to discover information to enhance your appreciation of Sunriver’s tapestry of history, animals, trees and volcanoes. Here are a few signs you will see along the trail: • The Legendary Lava of Newberry Volcano: Stop here to view the meadows and Paulina Peak in the distance while

learning how the land came to be. • Military Might Among the River: Camp Abbot: Imagine for a moment about the men who trained in Sunriver’s forests, meadows and river to fight in World War II. Most of the men were from the South and Midwest, with one man writing in his diary, “This is absolutely the prettiest country I have ever seen in my life.” • A Few Friendly Facts about “Riviere Des Chutes:” French speaking fur trappers receive the credit for naming the Deschutes River. In French, “des chutes’’ means “the rapids,” referring to the fierce waters near the Columbia River near the Deschutes’ mouth. True or false: The water originates from an underground source rather than surface runoff. sunriveranglers.org, click on Sunriver Trails

Sunriver’s History
ore than 11,500 years ago, the region was inhabited by native tribes who called the forests, meadowlands and lakes home. Nearly 7,000 years ago, lava flows dammed the Deschutes River at Benham Falls, backing up a lake that covered much of what is now Sunriver. When the river finally broke, a lush meadow surrounded by thick forests was left behind. During the winter of 1843, explorer John C. Fremont and guide Kit Carson traveled through the Sunriver area. In 1855, Robert Stockton Williamson and Henry Larcom Abbot surveyed the area for the railroad between California and the Columbia River. In the late 1880s, cattlemen drove their herds through the area. William and Sadie Vandevert along with their seven children were among the first homesteaders in the area. 1943-44: During World War II, the U.S. government purchased 5,500 acres to become Camp Abbot, a military training base for the Army Corps of Engineers. Constructed in 1942 as a self-contained city, Camp Abbot contained roads, water/sewer facilities and enough housing to sustain up to 10,000 soldiers at a time. During the 14 months of operation, Camp Abbot trained 90,000 troops. It was decommissioned in
1944 and the buildings and infrastructure were torn down. • The Great Hall, formerly known as the Camp Abbot Officer’s Club, is the only remaining building from historic Camp Abbot. The building was constructed in three months with native materials, including 511 logs, ten tons of volcanic rock for the fireplace and 150,000 board feet of timber. Late 1940s to 1960s: The land used by Camp Abbot was returned to the U.S. Forest Service, but 5,500 acres were sold as private landowners. The property changed hands many times. 1965: John Gray and Don McCallum, the original developers, purchase 5,500 acres in “the middle of nowhere” to form Sunriver Properties. 1968: John Gray and Don McCallum finish their “Plan of Sunriver.” Their goal was to create an environmentally sensitive and friendly community. Sunriver is named after the area’s two main features: sunshine and recreational. Lot sales and home construction began this year. Today: Sunriver welcomes guests throughout the world. There are more than 4,000 homes and condominiums. From its beginning to its present, the area has been a place of wonder, joy and inspiration for all who live and visit here. 2022-23 | SunriverChamber.com

uring thousands of vacationers, residents and guests through its doors each year since opening in 2012, visitors to the Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic & Recreation Center (SHARC) report being rejuvenated by the brilliant range of activities and amenities the facility offers to all ages and interests. The vast majority of SHARC visitors come in the warmer summer months to frolic in the oversize outdoor pool, drift in the lazy river, plunge down tube and body slides, dance in the water fountains, sunbathe or watch toddlers safely play in a separate wading pool and play area. Thousands also picnic in the adjacent park, scramble around the playground, play hoops on the full-size basketball court, play disc golf or test their skills at bocce ball. Even when the weather turns cold, SHARC’s indoor, multi-use pool continues to attract owners and visitors. Heated to a relatively toasty 84-85 degrees, the pool’s zero entry features bubbling fountains, spinning water flower and dumping bucket to entertain youngsters and the young at heart. School-age children make themselves dizzy floating around in circles in the vortex water feature. There are three adjacent lap lanes and space for workouts, swim lessons, aquatic fitness classes and water basketball. There is also an outdoor adult hot tub, and the winter tubing hill provides downhill thrills on select snow days. Aside from aquatics, SHARC’s 5,000-square-foot Benham Hall (which can also be split into two smaller rooms) can host that next business meeting, family reunion, wedding, banquet, seminar, event or fundraiser. Access to SHARC is free to members of Sunriver Owners Association with a valid Member Preference ID, those with SROA Recreation Guest Passes and guests of vacation rental properties enrolled in SROA’s Recreation Plus Program. P
hil Fischer often tells people that living in Sunriver is fantastic, but the reality is that it is way, way better than that. He likes having access to the outdoors from his front door. “Be it hiking, mountain biking, photography, fly fishing the high lakes, exploring new trails and vistas, skiing Mt. Bachelor, learning about our geologic history, hydrology, Native American history, visiting the restaurants and biking the paths, I love all of it,” he said. Photo courtesy of Bill Fischer An avid fly fisherman, Phil shares it was at first a challenge to learn where to fish each season. “It takes a lot of time on the water to learn where to go and when,” he said. “You can shorten the learning process by visiting a local fly shop. We’re blessed with a very good shop in the Sunriver Village called The Hook Fly Shop. Friendly people, knowledgeable and willingly share that knowledge. Buy a few flies as a thanks.” Best fishing story: Fishing one day at Hosmer Lake, the dry fly hatch had been spectacular, and I had caught several nice fish. As I was casting my Callibaetis dry fly towards a rising fish, I heard a large splash behind me and turned to see a Bald Eagle had caught a fish on the surface. He took flight and flew less than 15 feet over my head. As he passed by, my rod jumped with a fish on of my own. It was one of those, it doesn’t get better than this moments. I still get a sense of awe every time I see these magnificent birds. Favorite places to fish: Winter: Fall River or the Crooked River Spring: I look forward to fishing East Lake during ice out every spring. It can be cold and snowing, but it is great to be back on the water after a long winter. Ice out usually happens in mid-May to early June. Summer: Crane Prairie from late spring through summer until early fall. The variation of hatches, structure and challenging fishing keeps me coming back. We always see Bald Eagles, Osprey, ducks, geese and any number of other birds on Crane. I always carry a camera to capture nature’s bounty. Fall: In fly fishing, some things are best kept secret, such as my favorite fall fly fishing spot. Hint: It involves a hike to find rising trout on an excellent midge hatch. I rarely see anyone there, and I hope it remains that way.
A
member of the Sunrive Anglers Club, Rynie Miyashiro still laughs at what she “caught” more than 50 years ago. She recalled loading her hook with worms, salmon eggs and marshmallows. Proud of her casting ability, she swung her rod over her shoulder and gave it her best heave-ho. “Unfortunately, I must have miscalculated something, and I accidentally hit my dad in the nose with my line,” she said. “Luckily, there was so much stuff on my hook, it didn’t even leave a scratch. My dad never let me forget that incident, and to this day it still makes me laugh.” She advises people to hire a guide if it’s their first-time fishing in Central Oregon, adding local fishing guides are a wealth of information. “A guide will help you catch more fish,” she said. “Central Oregon is Photo courtesy of Mike Quan a great place to learn to fly fish or up your fishing game.” Fishing advice: Know the regulations! Pick up a current regulation guide or find it online and check to see if there are any special regulations for the area where you are going. You can buy your license online as well.

Hiking So Many Trails to Explore
D
eciding what hiking trail to explore is the greatest challenge faced by hikers visiting and living in Central Oregon. Sunriver is the perfect jump off place to explore nearby trails and those a short drive away. Alpine lakes, majestic Ponderosa pines, breathtaking waterfalls, ancient lava flows, and marvelous mountain views await beginning
HIKING CHECKLIST 1. Make sure the trail you want to hike is open. Some trails aren’t accessible until after Memorial Day and close in October. 2. Check the weather. Weather can often be unpredictable in Central Oregon so it’s important to always be prepared before heading out. 3. Wear good hiking boots and socks. 4. Pack a backpack with food, water, First Aid kit, whistle, extra clothes and socks and a flashlight. Take a hiking GPS. 5. Ask a friend to go hiking with you or join a hiking group. The Sunriver Hiking Club explores Central Oregon Trails and can be reached at sunriverhikingclub@gmail.com. The Sunriver Women’s Club also has hiking groups. 6. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. 7. Pick up a season or day recreational pass. You can purchase recreational passes at Camp Abbot or visit recreation.gov/pass for passes to Oregon’s Central Cascade Mountains. Central Cascades Wilderness Permit System requires a permit June 15 to October 15 for some of the most popular trails in the Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters and Mount Washington wilderness areas. All reservations for Central Cascades Wilderness Permits must be made through Recreation.gov either on-line, via the Recreation.gov app on mobile devices, or by calling their call center at 1-877-444-6777 or TDD 877-833-6777. Search for “Central Cascades Wilderness.” 8. Talk with the locals. Visit any of the recreational stores in The Village at Sunriver to ask questions about hiking trails. Stop by Sunriver Books or Camp Abbot for guidebooks and maps. 9. Be good to nature. Stay on the trail. Take pictures and leave nature where you found it. Pack it in and pack it out. Bury potty breaks.

Stunning Views Await on the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway
O
ne of the most beautiful drives in the entire Northwest — the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway — is conveniently located to Sunriver. True to its name, the Byway makes a loop around Mt. Bachelor and passes several mountain lakes along the way, each with its own breathtaking view of the Cascade Mountains. The peaks of Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top and the Three Sisters will seem close enough to touch as you take a relaxing stroll around the perimeter of Todd Lake or any of the other crystal-clear, pristine alpine lakes that dot
the unforgettable landscape. Many of these lakes are accessible by car only in the summer months, but there’s still fun to be had in the winter at several Sno-Parks along the way, as well as Mt. Bachelor ski resort. Be sure to stop by the Deschutes National Forest’s Welcome Station located at the junction of Century Drive and Conklin Road (Road #41). Opened in 2016, the friendly staff at the Welcome Station can offer a wealth of information for your visit, including maps, and you can purchase recreation passes.

Discover the Newberry National Volcanic Monument
O
ne of Central Oregon’s oldest natural treasures has a relatively new beginning. In November of 1990, the Newberry National Volcanic Monument was created within the boundaries of Deschutes National Forest. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, this monument provides a unique opportunity to view the Lava Lands of Central Oregon. Newberry National Volcanic National Monument includes more than 54,000 acres of lakes, lava flows, and spectacular geologic features in Central Oregon. It’s a short drive from Sunriver to explore the sites in the Monument.
LAVA LANDS VISITOR CENTER
Start your exploration of the Monument at Lava Lands Visitor Center, just north on Highway 97 or ride your bike there from Sunriver on the paved Sun-Lava Trail. View a 3D map of the entire Monument at the Visitor Center and learn about its eruptive history, beginning more than 400,000 years ago. Over the centuries, the volcanic activity has created massive lava flows covering 1,200 square miles, dozens of lava tubes and more than 400 cinder cones. The Visitor Center offers daily educational films, easy hikes on the Trail of Molten Lands and the Trail of Whispering Pines, picnics among the trees, ranger interpretive talks, and a hike, drive or bus ride to the top of Lava Butte — the site of an active fire lookout tower.
LAVA RIVER CAVE
The Lava River Cave is a short drive from the Visitor Center. An ancient lava tunnel about a mile long, the cave is open seasonally. See the adjoining article for information and ask at the Visitor Center about the schedule.

NEWBERRY CALDERA Travel south on Highway 97 to turn on County Road 21 to the Newberry Caldera where you will find the picturesque Paulina Lake and East Lake. This area offers a wealth of recreational opportunities, including fishing, kayaking, hiking and mountain biking. Camping and dining available. There are several hikes in the Newberry Caldera, including: • Big Obsidian Flow is an easy less than a mile trail with interpretive signs. Best to wear closed shoes and dogs are not allowed for safety reasons. The entire trail takes about an hour to walk. • The 7.5 mile Paulina Lakeshore Trail circles Paulina Lake with beautiful views, obsidian rocks and a natural hot springs. • Paulina Peak at 7,985 feet is the highest point in the Monument and offers stunning views of the Cascade Mountains, Newberry Caldera and the Central Oregon High Desert. You can either hike to Paulina Peak or drive to the top in the spring and fall. The hike from the Paulina Peak Trailhead is two miles each way, out and back. Cars are not allowed to drive all the way up to the Paulina Peak summit in summer.
LAVA CAST FOREST
The Lava Cast Forest earned its name from the trees that became encased in stone by a 6,000-year-old lava flow. What remained were casts of the trees, creating large holes that go several feet below the surface. Visitors can view these tree molds within the lava flow on a paved, one-mile interpretive trail. And enjoy the beautiful native flowers breathing new life into this ancient land of lava! To get there, follow the main entrance road to Sunriver east onto unpaved Forest Service Road 9720 for almost ten miles to a parking area. fs.usda.gov

witch on your lantern or flashlight and carefully descend 55 metal stairs to the Lava River Cave. A short drive from Sunriver, the Lava River Cave is a must-do on a hot summer day to cool off. It’s also a memorable experience to walk through the mile long ancient lava tunnel that is 50 feet wide in some places.
some adults may need to duck to walk under.
The Lava River Cave has three ecosystems: the warm, dry climate just outside the entrance; the warm, moist microclimate at the entrance and the cool, moist, dark environment inside the cave. Once inside the cave, the trail is flat with some rocks — be sure to wear closed toe shoes. Much of the cave can be traveled standing up, though at the end
The cave is open seasonally, so check with the Lava Lands Visitors Center for the schedule. Lantern rentals are available for $5 until 4 pm.
It takes about an hour and half to tour the entire cave — it’s an out and back walk — so be sure to bring two light sources. The cave temperature is a constant 42 degrees. Dress warmly, even in the summer!

Our Pickleball Pro
uis Bayol knew on his first visit that he would retire in Sunriver. “We were here for a family reunion. I started my day with a morning run, then a mid-morning bike ride, kayaking and finished with playing golf,” Luis said. “Where else can you do so many activities in one day.” The retired accountant/CPA was introduced to a new sport in 2012. “I had no clue about pickleball even though it was invented in 1965 by two dads in Bainbridge Island in Washington,” Luis said. “I enjoy playing because it’s a fun, social yet competitive sport.” He’s now Sunriver’s Pickleball Pro, having earned an IPTPA Level II certification as a pickleball instructor. He has a USAPA 5.0 tournament rating for mixed doubles and is a Team Selkirk sponsored player. Luis teaches beginners through 4.0 rated players. Bayol played tennis for many years prior to pickleball and was a Division I college baseball player. He has won medals at pickleball tournaments. The Sunriver Pickleball Club was established in 2012 by Anita Photo by Kristine Thomas and John Lohman. As of April 2022, there are 320 members. The club is open to SROA Homeowners, community members and visitors. The Sunriver Pickleball Club invites players of all levels to play. The club meets 9:30 am to 12:30 pm in May, June and September, and 8 to 11 am in July and August on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at the Fort Rock Park Pickleball Courts. “Everyone is welcome and it’s a great way to meet new friends,” Luis said. He and his wife, Ann, enjoy taking their guests kayaking on the river, bike riding throughout Sunriver and hiking at Benham Falls. “I feel like I am living in a place where I am always on a vacation,” he said. Discover “World-Class” Tennis in Sunriver
ennis enthusiasts can enjoy playing on Sunriver’s tennis courts or taking lessons from a certified professional. Tennis courts are the North Courts next to Woodlands Golf Course and one court at Fort Rock Courts in Fort Rock Park by the playground. Smaller court complexes nestled within the pines dot the community, creating a private court experience. Neighborhood courts, available first to Sunriver Owners Association (SROA) members, can be found at Meadow Village, Ranch Cabins and Cottonwood. Condominium courts, available to condo owners and guests, are located at Quelah Condos, Stoneridge Condos, The Pines, Alberello Condos and North Course Estates. To ensure a high-quality playing experience, the SROA continues to resurface many of its existing courts when
needed, which proves to be quite a draw for state and national tennis tournaments. SROA’s Sunriver Tennis programs are coordinated by a certified tennis pro and seasoned staff. Reservations are required for the use of SROA-owned tennis courts. You can rent a ball hopper and other equipment at the North Courts. Tennis Sunriver also offers a variety of clinics and lessons between June and September. For information, call 541-593-5707 or go to sunrivertennis.com. Owned and managed by Sunriver Resort, Sage Springs Club & Spa features Sunriver’s only indoor courts, and are open to resort guests and club members. The Resort also maintains four outdoor courts across the street from Sage Springs. The courts are available to Resort guests and the public for a fee. Travel Sunriver’s Pedestrian Pathways SUNRIVER’S PAVED PATHWAYS
The more than 34 miles of Sunriver’s paved pathways create an opportunity to discover Sunriver walking, running or biking. The signs along the way assist you in navigating your way wherever you want to go ... The Village at Sunriver, the SHARC, Sunriver Business Park and more. On your ride or walk, learn about Sunriver’s history from the 20 interpretive signs along the pathways. Skateboards and roller skates are not permitted on the Sunriver paved pathways. When using the paved pathways, please remember to: • Walk or ride on the right side of the path. • Notify people ahead of you that you will be passing them. • Keep dogs on a leash and pick up their “deposits.” • Never stop in the middle of the path. • Pick up anything you dropped to help keep the pathways clean.
SUN-LAVA PATH
The 5.5-mile Sun-Lava multi-use paved pathway connects to the Lava Lands Visitor Center. Starting at a well-marked trailhead near Circle 7, the pathway is ten-feet wide with nice views, gradual curves and slopes, and is a joy to navigate. Riding a bike or walking through the majestic ponderosa pines creates a sense of freedom from not having to drive to reach special places. The Sun-Lava pathway features mileage markers and intersection

signage to help users navigate to their intended destination. SunLava will also lead you to the Benham Falls East Day Use Area on the bank of the Deschutes River. From there, pedestrians and cyclists can cross the river on a wooden bridge and proceed downstream about a quarter mile on a wide dirt trail to the spectacular Benham Falls. Just about all uses — hiking, biking, roller skating, skateboards and wheelchairs — are permitted on the Sun-Lava pathway. The pathway is not plowed in winter, providing a delightful and wellmarked cross-country ski trail.
SUNRIVER TRAILS
Take the paved pathways in Sunriver to reach the new Sunriver Trails, across the Cardinal Landing Bridge. The Sunriver Trails offer miles of dirt and gravel paths for mountain biking, hiking and trail running. Since there is no parking on residential streets near Cardinal Landing Bridge, the paved pathways offer one of the best ways to access the Sunriver Trails. Be sure to view the trailhead signs to learn about the different trails.
BIKE RENTALS
Many rental homes come equipped with bikes, but if they aren’t included and you didn’t bring your own, there are local bike rental shops where you can rent every conceivable kind of bicycle and accessory including toddler trailers, tandem and recumbent bikes. Be sure to reserve before your visit.

Mountain Biking
F
or more than 30 years, Sunriver residents Steve and Michelle Brown have enjoyed mountain biking and how it provided them with the opportunity to explore remote natural areas. “The Central Oregon mountain biking community is welcoming and provides an opportunity to make new friends,” Michelle shared. “Mountain biking is also a great way to stay fit — mentally and physically.” Steve and Michelle had visited the Sunriver area for many years to enjoy the great mountain biking and skiing. When it was time for them to retire, they said Sunriver was the natural choice for their permanent home because they enjoy Sunriver’s rural atmosphere. They learned how to mountain bike by participating in local riding clinics and riding with experienced mountain bikers, who are always happy to assist with skills and gear. Several of the local bike shops offer group rides and all offer quality rental bikes. What is your advice for someone eager to learn how to mountain bike? Start on easier trails such as trails in Phil’s Trails, La Pine State Park, Horse Butte, Sunriver Trails, Peterson Ridge or Maston. What should someone who is mountain biking for the first time in Central Oregon know? There are hundreds of miles of singletrack trails throughout Central Oregon. Local bike shops are happy to recommend appropriate trails and access points. Be prepared for changing weather conditions - even in the summer you could encounter rain, hail and lightning. Our local trail building organization, COTA (Central Oregon Trail Alliance), has developed and maintained trails in our area for 30 years. Please respect the work that has gone into our trails - Never ride in muddy

conditions or off the trail. Keep single track single and always yield to hikers and equestrians. What is a trail every mountain biker should try at least once? There are too many excellent trails in Central Oregon to list and every rider will give you a different answer. Phil’s Trails network is classic Central Oregon singletrack and a must-do destination for mountain bikers traveling through our area. The Deschutes River Trail is popular, beautiful, and can be accessed from the Sunriver bike paths. For folks in the Sunriver area, be sure to check out the new trails right across Cardinal Bridge such as Roundabout and Afternoon Delight. The Sunriver Trails can connect to the Wanoga and Phil’s networks as well. The Browns shared their favorite mountain bike trails in the: Summer: Dinah-Moe Humm and Tyler’s Traverse, North Fork and Mrazek, Swampy Lakes, Peterson Ridge, Paulina Rim Trail Fall: All the summer trails plus Flagline and Met-Win. Winter: Wanoga Fat Bike Trails and Maston (when it’s dry). Spring: Horse Butte, Horse Ridge, Maston (but not when they’re muddy). Favorite places to eat or get coffee or a drink: Our neighborhood favorites are Sunriver Brewing Co., Big Belly Burger and Blondie’s Pizza. When friends or family are visiting, we always wear them out with mountain biking, hiking, water sports and snow sports. We enjoy grilling on the deck, eating out and tasting craft brews. Recommended mountain biking resources: Check out Bendtrails.org for trail ratings, maps and current conditions. Trailforks is a good app to see the developed trails in our area. Check out the Meetup App for local cycling groups with rides at various levels.

Sunriver Resort’s Golf Professionals
ourtney and Kevin Erdman feel incredibly fortunate that they get to work together at a place they love. Since 2015, Kevin has been the director of instruction, and Courtney has been the assistant golf professional at Sunriver Resort. They shared it’s rare to find married PGA professionals working at the same resort or golf course. “Sunriver is the best place in the world for us to live and work,” Kevin said. “There are incredible golf courses and fly fishing.” “We both love being outdoors, and we have traveled all over the United States,” Courtney said. “Sunriver is the best place to live because it’s a resort in the wilderness.” They met on the golf course when she was a high school freshman playing for the boys’ golf team, and he was a college freshman. They were friends while she was in high school, then Kevin asked Courtney on a date. He proposed to her at the driving range where they first met. They both played in college, were contestants on Golf Channel TV shows, and have several championships
to their names. From 2006 to 2008, Kevin coached and caddied for Courtney on the LPGA Futures Tour. “We have an awesome relationship. Being Courtney’s coach and caddie taught us how to be better at communicating and compromising,” he said. They shared a few tips on playing at Sunriver’s four golf courses. “They all have their unique challenges,” Kevin said. “It just depends on whether you want to play on a course with water hazards, tree-lined fairways, a 9-hole, par 3 or a mixture of it all.” Kevin and Courtney shared golfers tend to hit the ball seven to ten percent farther in Sunriver.“That’s because the air is thinner because Sunriver is at 4,200 feet,” Kevin explained. They share a similar philosophy for golf lessons, trying to keep lessons as simple as possible while making learning fun, Courtney said. They both begin lessons by asking their students what they want to learn, then customizing their lessons. They invite golf enthusiasts to learn more about Sunriver’s golf program by visiting sunriverresort.com. 2022-23 | SunriverChamber.com

T
here is something magical every year when the first snowflakes gently dance from the sky to blanket Sunriver in its winter white. Locals and tourists celebrate when they learn the worldclass Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort has opened for the winter season. Cross-countr y skiers, fat-tire bikers, snowshoers, sledders and snowmobilers enjoy winter wonderland adventures at their favorite Sno-Park. Enjoy winter recreation in Central Oregon, while staying in Sunriver.

Conquer the Snow on a Fat-tire Bike
I
n Sunriver, there is a bike for every season and trail. Once the snow arrives, locals and tourists enjoy navigating Sunriver’s bike paths and mountain bike trails on a Fattire bike or Fatbike. The tires can be five inches wide, allowing riders to conquer any terrain.
providing amazing traction and stability. A trail network accessed from the Wanoga Sno-Park is groomed for fat-tire bikes by volunteers from the Central Oregon Trail Alliance. As the sport becomes more popular, watch for even more fat-tire bike trails easily accessible from Sunriver.
Maybe it is its name or its look that make fatbikes appear to be heavy. The frames and rims were designed to make the bikes surprisingly light and easy to handle. As for navigating the snow, the tire pressure is reduced to less than five pounds,
The bike shops in Sunriver rent fat-tire bikes. If you are new to this style of riding, especially in the winter, the helpful shop staff can get you all set up with the proper bike and equipment and provide advice on where to ride.

Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort Mt. Bachelor, the crown jewel of Central Oregon’s winter sports mecca, is the sixth-largest ski resort in North America.
O
pen for skiing and snowboarding from November through May, the 9,065-foot volcano is the tallest resort peak in Oregon and Washington and offers an expansive 4,323 skiable acres. Known for quality snow, diverse terrain and 360-degree summit skiing experience, Mt. Bachelor is truly one-of-a-kind. Whether you prefer to seek out powder stashes in the trees, charge steep heart-pumping descents, casually cruise the corduroy or session the Woodward Mountain Parks, there is something for skiers and riders of all abilities. Twelve chairlifts, including eight high-speed quads and three surface lifts, serve a varied mix of over 100 runs. Approximately 15 percent of the terrain is rated as easier, 35 percent more difficult, 30 percent most difficult and 20 percent extremely difficult. Mt. Bachelor is a great area for experienced skiers and riders, but it is also a fantastic place to get into winter sports or take the family for an exciting day on the snow. The Sunrise base area is the ideal spot to get started, with beginner lifts that offer an easy ride up and a gentle slope down with an inclusive, family-friendly atmosphere. Check out the complimentary Early Riser quad and Woodward Start Park for the perfect introduction to skiing and snowboarding. Add a lesson from our coaches in the Ski and Ride School, and you’ll maximize your fun and speed up progression. The Mountain Gateway building in West Village is the spot for everything you need to start your day on the hill, including tickets, passes and rental equipment. Gravity Sports Pro Shop, one of the premier ski and snowboard shops in Central Oregon, has a large assortment of skis, snowboards, boots, apparel and accessories to keep your equipment up to date and ready for action. When you’re done at Mountain Gateway, take a quick stroll over to
the West Village Lodge for excellent breakfast, lunch and après options, including the local’s favorite, Clearing Rock Bar. If you’d like to try a mountain adventure of a different sort, Mt. Bachelor’s Nordic Center offers the longest groomed Nordic ski season in North America. Cross-country skiers can explore an expansive network of trails groomed daily, covering over 56 kilometers. In the Sunrise base area, hop on the sled with an Iditarod dog sled team with the Oregon Trail of Dreams. Stay snug and warm in the sled while the team and a professional musher take you on an exciting adventure through the Deschutes National Forest. The standard trip lasts about an hour, including orientation and an option to help take care of the dogs after the ride. Conveniently located 22 miles west of Bend and surrounded by the Deschutes National Forest, Mt. Bachelor offers breathtaking views of the Three Sisters and other Cascade peaks and a host of recreational options for your family and friends. Be Our Guest enjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” With that sentiment in mind, the Sunriver Community heartily welcomes you as our guests. To ensure your own and the community’s safety and well-being, here are a few things to keep in mind. All tips are shared with the sincere intent you have the best stay possible.
MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS EARLY
• Whether you are looking to rent a home, go golfing, visit the Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory, hire a guide to go fly fishing or dine at your favorite restaurant, be sure to do so before arriving to guarantee you can do what is on your vacation bucket list. • Rent equipment before you need it and try to avoid doing the day you want to use it.
DRIVING IN SUNRIVER
• Please obey speed limits. • Be aware of pedestrians and bikers crossing the road. • Driving at sunrise and sunset can be a challenge, especially with the glare. • The local deer and their wild buddies have not learned how to use the crosswalks. Do not be caught off-guard of the wildlife meandering across the road. • Remember to signal when exiting a roundabout.
FIRE SAFETY
• Park your car only on the driveway. Parking off the driveway or road can risk starting a fire. • Do not use fireworks in Sunriver. Repeat: Never use fireworks in Sunriver. • Do not use open flame fire pits. • Douse any cigarettes in water.
SOUND CARRIES
• Quiet time starts at 10 pm and ends at 8 am • Sound does carry so it is possible to hear loud gatherings a few blocks away.
ASK QUESTIONS
• Contact the Sunriver Area Chamber of Commerce or visit Central Oregon Visitors’ Association in The Village at Sunriver if you are seeking information about where to go and what to do.
A FEW MORE THAT YOU ALREADY KNOW:
• Treat your rental as your own home. • Be kind and considerate to the people who work in the restaurants, shops and recreational facilities.

isit The Artists’ Gallery in The Village at Sunriver to find inspiration, view Sunriver and Central Oregon through an artist’s perspective or purchase art for a gift or your home. The artists provided some insight to enjoy the art you view at the Artists’ Gallery. CELEBRATE ART AT SECOND SATURDAY: The Artists’ Gallery is the centerpiece of the Sunriver Second Saturday event. The gallery has been hosting receptions for nearly its entire 11year existence, and the fun extends beyond the gallery to other places in the Sunriver area. Stop by any Second Saturday of the month to see where else to enjoy art, music, wine and food. DIFFERENT TYPES OF PAINTING: Our artists use different mediums for their painting, including oil, acrylic and watercolor. BEST ARTIST STORY: An admirer complimented artist Bill Hamilton on his painting at an art demonstration. Bill paused before replying, “You know, I’ve been painting professionally for over 40 years now, and I’m still learning how to paint every single day.” LEARN HOW TO PAINT: Artist Bonnie Junell helps people understand the techniques behind oil painting and pairs it with a glass of wine and snacks. Ken Marunowski incorporates a variety of styles for his students to try. DISCOVERING CUSTOM ARTWORK: Our artists often work on commission paintings, including Deni Porter, who offers custom pet portraits in her bright watercolors. Deni captures the true essence of the animal, even the most challenging animal. PAINTING WITH THE LENS: Our three accomplished photographers capture unique scenes from photographic landscapes to wildlife photography, the gallery hosts a variety of pieces on canvas and metal for the discerning collector. FIRED AND FORGED ART: Coffee mugs to bowls, discover the ceramic artwork molded and fired in a kiln. Artists Diane Miyauchi and Dori Kite create amazing sculptural art. Painter and sculptor Marjorie Cossairt uses the kiln for several mixed-media pieces, highly desired by gallery patrons. CERAMICS IN… THE GROUND?: Artist Peter Roussel creates earth fired pots and sculptures by burying them with hot coals. Peter’s glazes and color techniques are outside the box with several crawl and crackle styles, creating one-of-a-kind treasures. GLASS FIRING: Glassblowers Jeff and Heather Thompson are well-known for their amazing menagerie of sea and land creatures. Artist Cheryl Chapman creates a variety of dishes and wall hangings with whimsical scenes. Her method mixes painting and firing to create something rarely seen in most galleries. Sunriver Books The Literary Connector
H
olly Hendricks and Janet Gordon don’t always see eye-to-eye when discussing a book. They completely agree Sunriver Books and Music is a valuable treasure, where owner Deon Stonehouse and her staff provide insightful advice on books, making recommendations to meet each book lover’s literary taste. Holly and Janet are regulars at Sunriver Books’ Book Club. There are four active book clubs: Fiction, Mystery, NonFiction and Classic. “Our book clubs welcome everyone and everyone is respectful of one another’s thoughts, ideas and opinions,” Deon said. “We all value the opportunity to learn from one another.” The book club meetings are held at 6 pm on Mondays. Holly first visited Sunriver in 1968 when her family purchased a cluster cabin. “My family wanted a place where we could enjoy golfing, fishing, boating and all the activities Sunriver has to offer,” Holly said, adding she learned to ski when she was six years old on Mt. Bachelor. When she moved to Sunriver in 2016, she said she felt like she was coming home. Joining the book club provided her with an avenue to meet new friends. “Sunriver Books plays a really important role in our community with its book club because it is an opportunity for people to connect with others who share similar interests,” Holly said. “Sunriver has so many talented and intelligent people and the book club is a way to learn from one another.” A retired ophthalmologist, Janet moved to Sunriver in 2012. Janet said Sunriver is fortunate to have an independent bookstore, describing Sunriver Books as “the crown jewel of our community.” “I love to read and am always looking for the next book to read,” Janet said. “Deon is such a treasure because she has an incredible knowledge of the books in her shop. Her enthusiasm for books is contagious.”
Both Holly and Janet said the book club introduces them to books they might not have selected. “Every book leads to great conversations with enthusiastic people at the book club,” Janet said. Being book club members has provided both women with the opportunity to meet new friends. They both enjoy hiking and dining locally. The Sunriver community has several wonderful book clubs including The Sunriver Public Library and the Sunriver Women’s Club. sunriverbooks.com

Meet Dana Whitelaw, Ph.D., Executive Director Enchanted by the Awe & Wonder of the High Desert Museum
G
rowing up in Eugene, Dana Whitelaw visited the High Desert Museum regularly when her family came to Central Orgon. “It inspired awe and wonder in me then and continues to do so for me every day,” said Dana, who has been the museum’s executive director for 14 years. Dana shared the High Desert Museum’s founder, Don Kerr, was truly a visionary, and his mission for the Museum is just as relevant today as it did when it opened 40 years ago. “He said the purpose of the Museum is to “wildly excite and responsibly teach,” and that’s what we continue to do,” Dana said. “We spark wonder through immersive experiences that lead to curiosity and learning.” She shared the High Desert Museum takes an interdisciplinary approach to share the region’s stories through its wildlife, art, cultures, history and the natural world. “There’s something here for everyone,” Dana said. “It’s always inspiring to see visitors from elders to children, with each person getting excited by a different piece of the experience.” What makes the museum a treasure to visit often is there’s always something new to discover. Visitors can
engage from a variety of experiences, from a raptor swooping right overhead to an interpreter discussing life in 1904 in first-person to exhibitions that are rich and perhaps unexpected. Nine temporary exhibits are debuted every year, proving visitors with a firsthand delightful way to learn and explore. What is your favorite exhibit at the museum? “Our permanent exhibition dedicated to the peoples of the Indigenous Plateau, By Hand Through Memory, shares powerful stories of Native peoples of the region in both the past and present. I appreciate the beautiful artistry and the contemporary perspectives it contains.” When you are not at the museum, you can be found… “Skiing or running with my family and dogs.” What’s next for the museum? “We’re honored to celebrate our 40th anniversary in 2022 — we’re so fortunate to have the deep support of the region. We’re excited to continue growing our mission of wonder and learning in the years ahead!” 2022-23 | SunriverChamber.com

Art Meets Wine in the High Desert
Annual May Sunriver Art Auction, Live Wine Expo and Virtual Wine Tastings
S
ponsored by the Sunriver Women’s Club (SRWC), Art Meets Wine in the High Desert is an annual week-long event featuring a fine art auction and some of Oregon’s premier wines beginning May 9. Five online wine tasting events feature some of Oregon’s best wineries. Wine lovers can invite a few friends and let some of the top Oregon winemakers lead a journey through the five S’s of wine tasting: see, swirl, sniff, sip and savor. To participate, visit artmeetswine.org and purchase ticketed reservations. Three bottles of wine from the selected winery are delivered to ticket holders’ homes prior to the event and the winemaker/host will guide the tasting during the live Zoom, swirl and sip virtual event. One reservation can be purchased per household, so it’s a great way to make it a party. The week’s events open with a virtual class, like Unexpected Wine Pairings or How to Build a Charcuterie Board. The week ends on May 14, with an in-person Grand finale’
wine tasting and art expo with wines from ten unique wineries representing Oregon’s varied wine regions, where wine lovers can taste fine wine, paired food and live music. Artists from the Artists’ Gallery Sunriver provide live demonstrations during the event and attendees have the opportunity to meet them and purchase local art. In addition to the wine events, a virtual silent art and wine auction and daily raffle will take place simultaneously, with an opportunity to bid on art sponsored by the Artists’ Gallery Sunriver, private wine tours, tastings and stays in Oregon wine country. Tickets for these events are limited. For more information and to purchase a ticket visit artmeetswine.org. Net proceeds from the event help support nonprofits in Central Oregon. The SRWC has been partnering with local organizations for more than 50 years investing $800,000 in programs that serve women, children, families and/or seniors.

Sunriver Stars’ Tenth Anniversary

elebrating its tenth anniversary, the Sunriver Stars Community Theater (SSC T ) has entertained audiences with its outstanding performances. Thrilled to return to the stage, the Stars invite you to attend its amazing shows for the 2022 season. Or lend your talent to acting or being behind the scenes for a play. A fundraiser for Ukraine, The Blabbermouth, The Puff Monster and the Wolf, is being directed by Victoria Kristy. The dinner theater is June 3 and 4. Victoria Kristy and Michele Hans are directing OZ with performances October 20 to 23. SSCT was founded by Victoria Kristy, with the mission of providing quality, family-friendly entertainment and educational opportunities for Sunriver and the surrounding communities. While living in Tacoma, Kristy loved vacationing in Sunriver, often hosting friends and even an artists’ retreat where she shared her dream of starting a community theater, the one thing Sunriver seemed to be missing. Kristy had spent more than 40 years directing children’s theater in Arizona, California and Washington. Sunriver wouldn’t feel like home until she had a creative outlet, and thus, Sunriver Stars Community Theater was born. “I have enjoyed watching it grow up,” she said. “We took those first baby steps together and learned along the way how to become the strong, professional group we are today. It has been thrilling to watch my ‘baby’ mature.” The shows are held at The DOOR church in the Sunriver Business Park. Adding to the community charm, many of the Stars actors and audience members have been involved since the launch, Kristy said. The Sunriver Life Playing, Living & Working in Sunriver
A
sk a resident why they moved anywhere from San Francisco to Boston to Sunriver and you’ll discover they fell in love with the Sunriver lifestyle when they were a visitor.
Sunriver is a world apart from anywhere else as residents will share how they enjoy the quietness, the brilliant stars and planets in the night’s sky, being close to abundant recreational activities, the sanctuary to nature and wildlife, and the feeling of living in a “small town,” where locals know one another. The Sunriver community and the nearby 27 neighborhoods that comprise Three Rivers South (TRS) have local shops, services and restaurants and are only 15 miles south of Bend and 15 miles north of La Pine.
Sunriver’s amenities include the 34 miles of paved pathways, allowing people to walk or bike to nearby shopping, restaurants, services and athletic facilities. The newly renovated owner’s-only North Pool complex has a lap/leisure pool, kids’ pool with water slide and expansive lawn area surrounded by native vegetation. The roads in Sunriver are well maintained, including in the winter, and the community is served by its own police and fire departments. Three Rivers South continues to grow in popularity. These neighborhoods, located to the south between Sunriver and La Pine, are intersected by the Deschutes, Spring and Fall Rivers. There is great diversity in housing here. For example, some areas may allow manufactured homes, while others have the option of living in gated communities.

PURCHASING YOUR DREAM HOME
People looking to buy a home, whether in Sunriver or TRS, have a host of choices when it comes to the cost of housing — from starter cabins to custom-built luxury homes. Several real estate agents have shared purchasing a home is

a sound long-term investment. In recent years, residents have seen their home’s value steadily increase. The quality of life offered in the greater Sunriver area — country living, resort amenities and the surrounding public lands that protect views — all contribute to home values appreciating. Sunriver has become increasingly popular as a place to work from home.
THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING YOUR HOME
When it comes to maintaining a home in Sunriver and Three Rivers South, residents need not worry about finding contractors to help maintain their home. Whether you’re looking to do a major remodel, roofing, painting, plumbing or landscaping, there are highly skilled experts available who take great pride in their work. Camp Abbot Trading Company, the local hardware store, also has what the do-it-yourselfer needs for home maintenance. Homeowners do face some weather-related challenges. While enjoying about 300 days of sunshine per year, Sunriver and TRS are at about 4,000-feet elevation. This means real winters with real snow. Homes here require foam vent covers in the foundation to protect pipes, and snow buildup on the roof can cause ice dams. To help local homeowners

Living in Sunriver, Sunriver Style with these and other cold weather challenges, businesses like roofers and landscapers switch gears in the winter months to provide snow removal services. During summer months, residents take advantage of the dry days to paint their homes and rake pine needles. Again, the weather can be taxing for projects like deck maintenance, with heavy moisture and cold in the winter, and dry heat in the summer. “Most homes in Sunriver include a wood deck to allow homeowners and visitors alike to enjoy the splendor of the outdoors inches from their back door. If decks could talk, however, they would tell you they would prefer to live inside,” says Gavin Hepp, owner of WebFoot Painting. But Hepp advises that with proper care, like a wood-penetrating stain, and the right timing — when the deck is dry and the spring pollen has fallen — decks can look great and last a long time.
WORKING WITH HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATIONS

One of the benefits of living in Sunriver is the quality and aesthetic standards for homes set by the Sunriver Owners Association (SROA), and the services that are provided by SROA to help residents maintain these standards. These guidelines help preserve Sunriver’s nature-based lifestyle. For example, residents who want to make changes to the outside of their homes, like a change in color, landscaping, or an addition, must receive approval from a citizen’s design committee. Some neighborhoods in Three Rivers South may also be governed by Homeowners Associations. Those looking to purchase a home should learn about the HOA for a particular community. Whether buying a home or planning a maintenance project, you can obtain a local business referral from the Sunriver Area Chamber of Commerce at 541-593-8149 or sunriverchamber.com.

and brush around their homes and under nearby trees to reduce a potential fire spreading to a home. Pruning trees away from a roof and other vegetation will reduce the “ladder effect” of fire. Once homeowners create a defensible space around their home, it is important to maintain the space.
The UDRC’s activities include public information meetings and large community meetings focused on understanding the issues relating to water flows on the Upper Deschutes River, the Deschutes river basin and protection of our neighborhoods from wildfires.
The UDRC has grant funds for senior homeowners and other property owners who live south and west of Sunriver to help protect their properties from wildfires. More information on the grant program is available at udrc.org/ defensible-space.
The UDRC promotes and helps homeowners to be “fire wise” by creating defensible space on their property. Defensible space is a 30-100-foot fire-resistant buffer around a home to reduce the spread of fire and the likelihood of a smoldering ember igniting a home.
Since forming in 2004, the UDRC has invested more than $700,000 in creating defensible spaces, fire adapted communities, and educational programs on water and wildfire issues.
Residents are encouraged to remove flammable vegetation
