7Why study at City of Bristol College? Why study at City of Bristol College?

Our students aren’t with us because they have to be; they’re here because they love to learn. When you join City of Bristol College, you will be building your future not just by studying for a qualification, but also by taking responsibility for your own learning and developing employability skills.

If you’ve got a career path in mind, consider whether you need to study certain subjects to get there. You might need to study a science or maths in order to go to university, for example, or complete a training course at college before you can progress into

What will you do when you finish this course?

How do you like to learn?

When choosing what to study and where, it can be helpful to make a list of things which might influence your decision, and how important they are to you.

Everyone has a preferred learning style. If you’re academic and perform well in exams, studying A Levels or T Levels could be the right choice for you. If you’re more of a hands-on person and prefer to learn by doing, you might prefer a vocational course or an apprenticeship to develop your skills in our specialist facilities.

Do you prefer academic-style learning, writing essays and sitting exams, or are you more of a practical learner?

It can be helpful to get advice from friends, family and teachers when choosing your next steps. However, it’s important to stay focused on what you want and what’s right for you; don’t choose a course just because your friends are doing it, or because someone else wants you to.

Apprenticeships are work-based courses on which you work in a real job with an employer (and get paid), supplemented by learning at college, usually on a block release or day release basis. You will work with your apprenticeship trainer towards your endpoint assessment for the duration of the apprenticeship.

Here are some things you may want to consider:

Do you feel ready to go into work and learn on the job?

Ifemployment.you’renotsure where you want your course to take you, our online Career Coach tool can help you learn more about yourself and what careers would suit you, find a career based on the course you’re interested in, build your CV and more.

Our new T Levels are qualifications designed to help you enter employment or higher education in a specific industry. They are equivalent to 3 A Levels and involve significantly more classroom study than an apprenticeship, so you can experience an industry while doing most of your learning at college.

What will you enjoy learning?

Practical learning

The first thing to consider when choosing a course is always what you will enjoy learning. Even if you don’t know what you want to do in the future, you will find your course much more engaging and rewarding, and will do better, if you’re learning about a subject you’re passionate about!

Does the course you’re considering usually lead directly into employment, or are there further study and training opportunities available? Will you want to take those next steps? Consider the course as part of a longer-term plan and where it could lead.

9

On our technical and vocational courses, you learn the theory and practice of your chosen subject in college from our expert tutors, and undertake industry placements to gain real-world experience. You will learn in our state-of-the-art facilities, developing the knowledge and skills to progress into your chosen career.

Choose your qualificationChoosing what to study

A Levels could be the right choice for you. You can study any suitable combination of three of four subjects over two years, and be assessed through exams and coursework. Many A Level students progress to higher education upon completion.

You have so many options for education and training after GCSEs that it can sometimes feel like an overwhelming decision. We want to help you choose the right next steps for you.

What is your dream career? Are you getting the best advice?

Most students study a full-time programme of three A Levels over two years, although it may be possible to study four. You will be taught at our College Green Centre by expert tutors, and where applicable, have access to our specialist facilities to complete practical work.

We have designed five pathways which will help you choose subjects that complement each other and will help you towards your career goals.

A Levels are mainly assessed by external exams at the end of the two years, with mock exams held at the end of your first year. Some subjects may be partially assessed through coursework.

A Levels

How will you be assessed?

Once you’ve completed your A Levels, you may choose to go to university, or enrol onto a higher education course at our University Centre. You could also progress onto a higher-level apprenticeship, or use the academic knowledge and skills you’ve gained to go into employment.

If you’re academic and usually perform well in exams, A Levels could be the right choice for you. They offer the opportunity to study a range of subjects and gain the academic knowledge and skills that are valued by universities and employers.
