Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada

Welcome to the April 2021 Recreation & Culture Guide

A Message from Mayor Chris Spearman

Spring is here! After a year of unusual circumstances, we’re all looking forward to getting back to some level of normal. Since we still have a long way to go to beat this pandemic, the safest way to do that is by spending more of our recreation and leisure time OUTDOORS! City parks are a great place to be active and have fun with your family. Did you know that Lethbridge maintains over 177 km of paved pathways and approximately 57 kms of natural or gravel trails, 130 parks and over 90 playgrounds for your family to enjoy? Check out the interactive pathways map on the City of Lethbridge website to see what’s new. If you’re curious about what is open out there, you’re in the right place. The Recreation and Culture Guide is your guide to what’s available as more of our facilities move towards reopening. The Guide will help you keep in touch with clubs, leagues, teams, events and classes so you can return to learning and exploring as soon as is reasonably possible. The natural beauty of our City really starts to emerge at this time of year and I encourage you to take it all in. Of course we can also enjoy shopping downtown, and supporting our local businesses all over the City will help them to recover. I know they look forward to seeing you and will appreciate your support. We’ll have to wait and see which of our summer festivals and events will be able to be added to the calendar, and it will depend upon our efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 now. Remember to keep each other safe by keeping those masks on in all indoor spaces, keeping a good distance apart and wash and sanitize your hands frequently. I know you and your family can find a fun adventure waiting for you while being creative and following the health guidelines. Be active and be safe Lethbridge! Mayor Chris Spearman

Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. CPR Ends Passenger Service in Lethbridge Fifty years ago, in 1971, the Canadian Pacific Railway ended passenger service in Lethbridge.

In July 1971 both the Lethbridge-Calgary and the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat dayliner service ended. The CPR made the decision to end passenger service because it was considered uneconomical. The two men who brought in the final trains were Lloyd “Miles” Roadhouse and Sam “Smoky” Shaw. Both of the men were retiring themselves along with the dayliner service.

The service came to an end when dayliner service was cancelled. While passenger service had started with the railway arriving in Lethbridge in 1885, the first dayliner left Lethbridge in April 1955 and replaced old steam engines.

Bison bison bison

Did You Know? “What’s in a name?” W.S. Iinnii is the Blackfoot word for bison. Bison is the scientific name for what European settlers first called buffalo in North America. Between 40 to 60 million bison roamed North America prior to European contact in the 1700s. By 1880 only about 600 bison remained in North America.

The plains bison is a keystone specie that has unique ability to build and restore prairie ecosystems and relationships. The bison has exceptional design from spade-like hooves that assist in successful seed germination of native plants to moisture wicking five hair fur coat with insulating ability, second only to the muskox.

“Parks are good for our environment”

Parks and open space provide multiple environmental benefits to a community including the provision of space for wildlife habitat, native plants and public trees.

Did You Know?

Public trees in Lethbridge provide many benefits for the environment and sustainability of our City including: •Storing over 128 million kg of CO2 and sequester over 4 million kg of CO2 from the atmosphere. •Protecting infrastructure through the prevention of erosion and the reduction of rainwater through storm sewers. •Intercepting over 331,000 cubic metres of rainfall feach year. •Creating a significant neighbourhood cooling effect whichresults in increased comfort and energy savings for residents. •Removing particulates and pollution from the air.

52

Parks also provide habitat for wildlife. Birds, deer, rabbits, coyotes, porcupines and skunks are just a few of Lethbridge’s wild residents making their home in our parks and river valley spaces. Each play a key role in the function and balance of the natural ecosystems that are our parks. For references and more information please visit: https://www.lethbridge.ca/parkbenefits
