Expat Family Easter 2023: Top Picks

Easter is a time for bonding with family and friends, enjoying the great outdoors, and being creative with fun activities. However, too many people get stuck on what to do over the Easter weekend. Some spend it at church, others have a boring hangover while others simply do nothing at all.

Page 8 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTA LINK MAGAZINE

Here on the Costa del Sol, you can make Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Easter 2023 a time to remember. It is a great time for processions, celebrations, or even taking time to visit a natural park or the zoo, play sports or spend your day on the water. For Spanish culture, Malaga region hosts a series of Easter processions that are spectacular to see in person. We can’t list them all, so here are our Top Picks and suggestions to help you enjoy something different this Easter.

Processions

Malaga City

The most famous procession is “Cristo de Mena,” which always includes decorations and images of “Jesús El Cautivo”, “La Cofradía de la Esperanza” and the “Virgen de las Penas.” Of course, it’s Malaga city, so expect a very spectacular week of celebrations.

Alhaurín El Grande

Everyone should go at least once in their lifetime! At this festival, expect to see popular processions like that of “Our Father Jesus Nazarene” (also known as “Los Moraos”) and the “Brotherhood of Santa Vera Cruz” (“Los Greens”).

Fuengirola

For a taste of the Sevillian baroque tradition, there are religious processions of the “Brotherhood of Nazarenes of the Blessed Christ of Charity” and “Blessed Christ Yacente de la Paz”, to name a couple. Fuengirola puts on a great celebration of Holy Week and always organises a very complete programme that will include events prior to Holy Week leading up to the traditional processions and service celebrating the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Marbella

Marbella is a must-see during Semana Santa and comes alive with religious processions of “Nazareno” and “La Soledad” to name a couple, plus also don’t forget San Pedro de Alcantara. With processions and festivals every day of Semana Santa it is a spectacular time of year, with different Brotherhoods displaying their commitment to their religious beliefs.

Ronda

Ronda was once overtaken by Catholic monarchs, and during Santa Semana, that past comes to life. 15 must-see processions, including “Señora Nuestra Señora de Loreto” on Easter Sunday. (This particular procession is carried out solely by women from the coast of Spain.) Ronda also hosts processions of “Vera Cruz,” “Ecce Homo” and “La Santo Entierro,” which aren’t to be missed.

Damian Rilo: A Sensitive and Talented Argentine Artist Thriving on the Costa del Sol

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Damian Rilo had a multifaceted and creative childhood. He was always fascinated by the arts, including painting, sculpting, and photography, and had a passion for architecture and design. His wooden Lego-type toy sparked his imagination, and he loved building houses and new structures to play with.

Growing up, Rilo’s parents were also involved in business, with his father running several stores and pantries and his mother owning a kinetic fashion store. Despite their successful careers, Rilo was encouraged to pursue his artistic dreams, which eventually led him to the Costa del Sol in Spain.

Rilo has been living on the

Costa del Sol for nine years, seeking professional and artistic development. As an artist, he feels a deep sense of sensitivity, which allows him to perceive even the most hidden vibrations in people. This heightened awareness has helped him develop other cognitive abilities as well.

Rilo hopes to encourage readers to invest in good art or seek advice on putting together their own art collections. He draws inspiration from many painters, sculptors, and architects, including Picasso, Baskiat, Rodin, Calder, and Clorindo Testa, among others.

Rilo’s journey to becoming an artist and photographer was not without its challenges. In 2010, he experienced a traumatic incident that changed the course of his life. Two individuals tried to break into his home, causing glass to shatter on both his wrists. The injury forced

Page 12 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTA LINK MAGAZINE

Rilo to focus on rehabilitation, losing strength in his arms but still being able to take photographs. He went on to work for some of the best studios and magazines in Argentina, Brazil, and Marbella.

Despite the challenges, Rilo has created numerous works of art that have garnered critical acclaim. One of his most memorable projects was a piece that won first prize from the Automóvil Club Argentino. He finds inspiration in modern literature, philosophy, and writers such as Julio Cortazar and Jorge Luis Borges.

When it comes to fashion, Rilo prefers to wear all black, especially during the summer, to catch and retain the light. He enjoys wearing loose and wide-necked T-shirts with nautical shoes for an elegant and sporty look.

Overall, Damian Rilo is a talented and sensitive artist who has overcome obstacles to pursue his passion for art and photography. He hopes to inspire others to appreciate and invest in good art and seek out advice to build their own collections.

10 Affordable Ideas to Boost Curb Appeal

Your home’s first big impression is its curb appeal, so if your place is in need of some sprucing up, you may wonder how you can make some updates without breaking the bank. These 10 ideas are easy on budgets, but they can also make a big impact on your home’s exterior image.

1. Paint your front door

As long as your front door is in good condition, there’s no need to replace it completely. A fresh coat of paint can instantly update your home’s facade. Go bold or stick with a classic hue – it’s all up to you.

2. Dress up the windows

Add character and charm by enhancing your front windows. You might add wooden shutters, window box planters or both. Also look at the trim around the windows. If it’s chipped and peeling, adding a fresh coat of paint doesn’t just look nice, it can protect your windows from damage, too.

3. Clean up flower beds

An unkempt flower bed can drag down an otherwise stunning home. Keep beds tidy and vegetation trimmed, even during the offseason. Watch for weeds and replenish mulch or rock ground cover as needed to keep the beds looking healthy and inviting.

4. Install new lighting

Replacing outdated light fixtures can give your exterior an instant upgrade. There’s no right or wrong style; just choose a colour and look that matches the rest of your design.

5. Replace worn welcome mats

A cheerful mat at your front door can be an inviting sight for visitors, but those mats inevitably wear with time, and what was once bright and charming becomes dingy and dull. A new mat can help bring back that cheery entry you once cherished.

6. Pressure wash the drive and walk

Over time, driveways and sidewalks collect an incredible amount of grime. Pressure washing not only eliminates the filth, but the clean surfaces also add to your home’s visual appeal.

Page 16 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTA LINK MAGAZINE

7. Add new vegetation

Landscaping is a relatively inexpensive way to introduce more personality to a yard. Aim for a mix of pretty and practical, such as some low flowering bushes and some trees or bushes that offer privacy and shade.

8. Keep up with basic maintenance

When your home is in poor repair, it shows. Pay attention to bent or rusting gutters, imperfections in the roof and other maintenance matters that aren’t just aesthetic; left unrepaired, they can also result in major damage.

9. Pay attention to details

Functional items like the mailbox might not seem like much of a design element, but these small details can be a big distraction if they’re not in good condition. Update or replace as needed to keep your aesthetic in sync.

10. Add seasonal decor

There’s no need to go all out for every occasion, but some timely decorations that celebrate the holiday or season can make your entry fun and festive. Coordinate wreaths, planters, signs and other accent pieces for a cohesive look that says, “come on in.”

Improve Wellness with Affordable Bathroom Upgrades

Wellness is at the forefront of nearly everyone’s mind, including keeping germs at bay and creating surroundings that promote mental and physical health. Even small, but important, spaces like the bathroom can benefit from changes with wellness in mind.

Abathroom can be one of the easiest rooms in your home to give a little extra TLC toward creating a healthier lifestyle. These cost-effective measures can turn your bathroom into a more practical, functional space that promotes your well-being.

Switch Up Surfaces

The countertops in your bathroom, much like the flooring, must be able to withstand a lot of water. Nonporous vanity tops, such as those made from quartz, hold up to being wet constantly and can help keep germs from breeding. In addition to being easy to clean, a solid-surface option like quartz never needs to be sealed or polished, making it an aesthetically pleasing, long-lasting option.

Clean Green

Bathrooms are often hot and steamy places, and water vapours in the air can carry potentially harmful chemicals from cleaning products. Green cleaning products are made to control the spread of bacteria and viruses using safe and effective means. Not only are they helpful in preventing asthma attacks and other respiratory ailments,

they are a low-cost way to improve overall indoor air quality.

What you use to clean yourself is just as important. Using green or organic personal care items can help reduce toxin exposure and lessen the likelihood of an allergic reaction.

Reduce Humidity

All that steam can affect your health in other ways, too, since it creates a humid environment that encourages mould and mildew. A heated towel rack is an inexpensive way to add a touch of luxury to your space while generating heat that helps reduce humidity and the growth of mould and mildew, therefore benefitting indoor air quality.

Heated towel racks like those from Amba Products come in a variety of finishes and styles to coordinate with your decor. For modest accommodations, the Radiant Small is a spacesaving choice, and freestanding models are available if wall space is at a premium. Another advantage: Since the racks dry towels, they’ll stay mildew-free longer and don’t need to be washed as often, which helps save valuable natural resources.

Page 28 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTA LINK MAGAZINE

Enhance Air Quality

Creating a green, spa-like oasis with plants can bring wellness benefits that don’t break the bank. Indoor plants help rid the environment of pollutants, and the energy and ambiance they add may have mental health benefits, too. Plants like mother-in-law’s tongue or peace lily are popular options to incorporate as natural air purifiers.

Explore Cwolour

A bathroom’s colour palette can also play a role in your wellness goals. Warmer shades like red and orange enhance energy while cooler colours like green and blue can be calming.

What time is it on the moon?

With more lunar missions than ever on the horizon, the European Space Agency wants to give the moon its own time zone.

Dozens of lunar missions, including ones to build bases and other habitats on the moon, are planned for the decade ahead, the European Space Agency (ESA) has said. Space organisations around the world are considering how best to keep time on the moon. The idea came up during a meeting in the Netherlands in November 2022, with participants agreeing on

the urgent need to establish “a common lunar reference time” For now, a moon mission runs on the time of the country that is operating the spacecraft. European space officials said an internationally accepted lunar time zone would make it easier for everyone, especially as more countries and even private companies aim for the moon and NASA gets set to send astronauts there. Beyond astronauts and ground controllers being able to tell the time on the moon, the need for standard time-keeping in space is also essential for guidance and navigation

Costalink’s Resident PT Expert

So hopefully by now you´ve been following along with my programme and you´ve already started to see some results!! Great news!! You´ve probably noticed a change in the weather also, weather much more suited to the beach! So it’s time to take things up a notch to get you beach body ready!

Your mission should you choose (or desire a beach body) to accept it is as follows!

Day 4

Additional Circuit (to be performed on a 4th separate day or even after the main workout should you be feeling like taking things up a further notch!)

A-Dumbbell Thrusters

B-Medicine Ball Slam

C-Squat Jumps

D-Mountain Climbers

E-Sit Ups

For the circuit you are going to perform each exercise in succession for a total of 40 seconds, resting for 20 seconds before moving onto the next exercise. After completing all exercises you´re going to rest for a total of 2 minutes, then hit the circuit again. This is going to be repeated 3 times!

So you may have noticed A1, A2, B1, B2 etc. This is what we call supersetting, what it basically means is that you are going to perform the exercises back to back. So for instance, on Upper Body Push Day, you would hit 10-15 reps of A1-Chest Press Machine, immediately followed by A2-Dumbbell Lateral Raises, then you´d rest for around 2 mins, then perform another set. With all exercises we are going to shoot for 3 sets of 10-15 reps. This is going to get our heart rate pumping a little and serve as a way of increasing the intensity of the workout!

Daily step count remains the same, get outside, get some sunshine and get 10k steps in per day!

Nutrition.

So hopefully you have been writing down what you have been eating, and hopefully you have started to identify patterns of when you or if you over consume calories. If you have been losing weight over the last month and you are still losing then nothing needs to change. But if your weight loss has stalled, it’s time to dial things in a little. Get online and find ´Calorie Calculator´, enter your details and discover the amount you should be eating to lose body fat, then try sticking to that amount by entering the foods you eat into myfitnesspal.

The true key to all of this working is CONSISTENCY over time, so be sure to get good at these key points. Stay focused, keep showing up and I truly hope you find the enjoyment in getting fit and making progress!

Why does my skin peel ?

Peeling is nothing but your uppermost skin layer falling apart. You may have woken up with your skin peeling off and you might think that you haven’t properly moisturised well. That could be the case or it could be due to weather, your skin routine, diet, certain medical conditions, medicines etc.

Peeling is a sign that your skin is losing its structural composition barrier and hence there’s some repairing you need to do.

Causes for Peeling

Sunburn, Windburn, Over Exfoliating, Incorrect Skincare Routine. Certain Medical Conditions.

Windburn

When the cold breeze is hitting your face this leads to redness, inflammation, even tearing of the skin due to the harshness...

Windburn will affect dry and sensitive skin without a good moisturiser as protection. Of course it will lead to peeling of the skin since there is no moisture to hold the structure of the cells.

Sunburn

If you don’t use sunscreen correctly, you will experience an adverse effect from the sun. UV rays can easily shoot down your skin’s structure and moisture level without breaking a sweat. Once the UV rays hit your skin and burn your cells, it will cause redness and eventually the skin will start peeling off. NASTY.

Over Exfoliating

We have all secretly over-exfoliated because we thought that would solve acne, make our skin brighter, and bring a new glow. If you’re staying at home your skin doesn’t need to be exfoliated every day. This can be naturally acheived after a hot steam shower with a simple towel.

Over exfoliating, damages your skin, and produces subatious oils that can lead to unnecessary skin damage and in certain cases even lead to acne as it breaks your skin barrier making it easy for the germs to settle in your pores.

Your Skincare Routine: Do you have too many actives in your routine?

If you have humectants in your routine then do you have occlusives to seal the hydration?

Certain ingredients when mixed can irritate and dry your skin. For example, if you are using higher concentrations of Vitamin C then you MUST add Ceramides, Peptides, Niacinamide or Vitamin E to make sure your skin is hydrated. Certain ingredients like Hyaluronic acid, if used as a standalone ingredient can harm your skin which makes it extremely drying to your skin. So one must always pair humectants with emollient or occlusive to avoid drying and peeling.

Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, etc can lead to peeling of the skin. This is scaly and can be managed.

Time to visit your beauty therapist to help you with the correct skin care routine and treatments.

Are you in need of some haircare advice?

Struggling to achieve the glossy locks of your dreams? Look no further! Here are my top 5 tips to help you achieve the healthiest hair possible.

1. Invest in quality hair-care products that are free from parabens and sulphates.

Parabens and sulphates are two of the most common ingredients found in many haircare products, but they can be damaging for the hair. Parabens are a type of preservative used to extend the shelf life of products; however, they can be especially harsh on the hair, making it dry and brittle. Sulphates are surfactants, which are substances used for cleaning and foaming; however, they can strip the hair of its natural oils and moisture, leaving it dehydrated, dull and prone to damage.

For healthier, more nourished hair, it is essential to invest in hair-care products that are free from parabens and sulphates. These products are less likely to strip the hair of its natural oils, leaving it looking and feeling more nourished and hydrated.

2. Treat your hair to a deep conditioning treatment once a week.

Using a deep conditioning treatment is vital for healthy hair. This helps restore moisture, balance pH levels and makes hair more manageable. Deep conditioners contain hyaluronic acid for hydration and protection, and nourishing ingredients like coconut and argan oil to replenish lost moisture. For best results, use a deep conditioner once a week to improve hair health by restoring moisture, softness and shine, and reducing breakage and frizz.

3. Always avoid going to bed with wet or damp hair

Going to bed with wet or damp hair can be detrimental to both the scalp and hair. The scalp is especially vulnerable when wet and can become irritated, inflamed, and itchy due to the moisture and lack of air circulation. This can lead to conditions such as dandruff and scalp acne.

Wet hair can also be prone to breakage as it is more likely to snag and pull on the strands. In addition, wet hair is more susceptible to heat damage as it is more likely to absorb the heat from blow-drying and styling tools, which can lead to split ends, dryness, and breakage.

4. Regular visits to the salon are a great investment in your hair

Regular visits to the salon for a maintenance trim to remove split ends is essential for keeping your hair healthy and nourished. Split ends occur when the protective outer layer of the hair is damaged, leaving it vulnerable to further breakage and damage. A regular trim helps to remove these split ends, which helps to keep the hair looking healthy.

In-salon conditioning treatments are also a great investment for your hair health. These treatments help to replenish lost moisture and help to protect the hair from damage. They also help to reduce frizz, improve manageability, and give the hair a glossy finish.

5. Avoid overuse of heat-styling tools

Heat styling tools are a great way to get that perfect look, but they can be damaging to the hair if used excessively. Heat styling tools such as curlers, straighteners and hairdryers can cause the hair to become dry, brittle and prone to breakage. This is because the heat breaks down the protective layer of the hair, leaving it vulnerable to damage.

To reduce the risk of damage, it is important to avoid over-using heat tools. When you do need to use them, invest in a quality heat protection spray to help protect the hair from the heat. Alternatively, look into heat-free methods of styling, such as braiding, twisting and knotting, to get the look you want without the risk of damage.

Easter Apple Cake Recipe

It’s almost impossible to beat the combination of sweet fruit and decadent desserts. This delicious recipe for Easter Apple Cake highlights the crisp fruit but also the cinnamon sugar-flavoured pastry. It’s luscious but doesn’t overdo it on the sweetoscale with just the right mix of flavours.

The cake is baked with the apples inside as the middle layer, which creates a moist, finished product. The apples are gooey, baked in a cinnamon sugar coating, making them a sweet and light complement to the perfectly baked cake. The secret to this cake is creating layers that will hold up. Pour half of the batter into a round cake tin first then add apple mixture and top it all with the rest of the cake batter.

With fluffy cake layers and a soft apple centre, this cake does it all. Not to mention the drip of icing at the end that all but guarantees everyone will be asking for seconds.

Why Is Marbella a Popular Business Destination?

Marbella is widely sought-after as a business hub due to its accessibility, attractive atmosphere, and excellent infrastructure. The city is renowned for its stunning beaches, superb climate, and luxury lifestyle, all of which offer an ideal backdrop for entrepreneurs looking to set up shop in the area. Furthermore, investors are intrigued by Marbella’s numerous economic benefits, such as tax incentives and a highly skilled workforce. No wonder it’s quickly becoming one of the most desirable business destinations!

In the past decade, Marbella has surged in popularity as a business destination. From those based entirely here to those operating out of Spain for part of the year, there is much that this vibrant city offers. Marbella puts significant effort into creating an environment that is supportive of business growth and welcomes international companies with open arms.

In addition, Marbella’s location in Malaga Province has increased its notoriety as an up-and-coming business hub, with plenty of coworking spaces,

business accelerators, and incubators where tech giants are starting to make their presence known.

Networking in Marbella can present some amazing opportunities. Whether you are looking for business partners, new customers, or simply a network of contacts to grow your business, networking in Marbella can bring invaluable connections and chances for success.

Marbella is not only an appealing spot for businesses to set up operations; companies based in Spain have the advantage of being able to access numerous government aids. One such incentive, “Kit Digital,” provides a subsidy of up to €12,000 so companies can improve their web operations. This could cover anything from web design to SEO or e-commerce.

An all year round destination, Marbella doesn’t sleep, ensuring businesses based there thrive and grow, it’s no wonder so many are choosing it as their European business HQ.

4 Fun Things To Do with Friends & Family at Easter

If the almost limitless daily processions, religious gatherings and church services aren’t your thing, then try some of these ideas and make Easter a family week to remember. In fact, do ALL these three things at the same time AND maybe try a Festival or Procession as well! What a week!

1. Organise an Egg Hunt

There’s nothing like an exciting egg hunt on Easter. While egg hunts are more attractive to kids, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy an egg hunt as an adult. With the right type of chocolate eggs, most adults will jump at the opportunity to add more chocolate to their baskets!

However, keep in mind that organising an egg hunt involves more organisation than simply placing eggs at random locations. There are so many ways you can turn an egg hunt into something special this Easter 2023.

A good egg hunt should have puzzles, clues, anticipation, and more. It’s also a great way to connect with family and friends and bring everyone together. And if chocolate eggs aren’t enough to motivate older kids and adults, you can include prizes for those that find the most eggs. The important thing is to be creative and get everyone together.

Page 64 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTA LINK MAGAZINE

2. Go camping

If you really want to get outdoors, go camping! You can fall asleep under the stars and wake up to the soothing sounds of Mother Nature. When you go camping, you come back rejuvenated. Costa del Sol is filled with a variety of campsites, whether that’s near the sea, in a park or landlocked in the middle of rural Spain.

3. Do Arts and Crafts

Easter is a great time to put your creativity to work. You can make decorative pots and plates, pot plants, artwork, and other crafts. There are countless arts and crafts projects to keep you busy on Easter, and you’ll feel proud of your achievements when the artwork is completed. Besides, the experience of creating your own artwork is unmatched and stays with you for life.

While there’s no restriction on the type of artwork to create on Easter, it’s best to go with an Easter theme. Try decorating existing objects with bunnies, eggs, or other Easter symbols. If you run out of ideas, try one of these arts and crafts projects:

Make a decorative Easter Bunny. Sewing bunny-themed socks and scarves. Decorating Easter eggs with paint. Making Easter egg-shaped vases and pot plants. Many of these projects can be done with kids, so it’s best if you try to get your children involved. However, even solo art projects can be entertaining.

4. Try Your Luck at Baking

Easter has always been synonymous with baking. Whether it’s freshly baked hot cross buns, bread or cakes, there is a range of recipes you can try to stay busy this Easter Weekend. If you’re an experienced baker, Easter is the perfect time to put your skills to the test. And if you have zero experience with baking, there’s no better time to start.

Remember, Easter is a great time to spend with friends and family, so try getting your kids and family to help you make Easter dishes and it will turn into a wonderful experience for everyone. We’ve added a delicious Easter Apple Cake Recipe for you to try - see the recipe on page 48.

What is the Advantage of Costalink Magazine Advertising?

Magazine advertising is one of the most powerful marketing tools available, and an ad placed in a Costalink Magazine can improve sales and promotion or Brand awareness enormously.

Costalink is the No.1 Local Magazine and keeps us all in touch with our local area along the whole Costa. Costalink is trusted, interesting, quirky, full of local information and businesses and a really useful source of information for over 16 years.

Costalink is the perfect direct niche publication for you and here’s 10 benefits why:

1. This is Your Audience - Readers are within 1 hour away!

Your business is local, and Costalink Magazine is the ideal way to speak directly to your potential customers, who are at most one hour away from you! Like you, they are interested and involved in our local community, so they are interested in you too. Because they are proud of where they live and because visitors are interested in the area they are visiting, Costalink readers and subscribers prefer to support and buy from local businesses.

2. What People Take In During Their Time Out

There’s plenty to attract our attention on websites and social media, but typically that lasts 20 seconds. Sitting down with a hot drink and a Costalink Magazine is different. It’s a quiet, relaxed time we have awarded ourselves. There isn’t any competition; we’ll just look at and read what interests us, and that’s a great opportunity for our partners.

3. Being Noticed and Remembered

There’s a lot of media traffic out there, and we learn to filter it. In Costalink Magazine, there are only so many pages, with just a few advertisements on each page. You have a much better chance of being noticed and your local advertisements will be more memorable than their digital equivalents.

4. Reader Confidence

Fake news and cybercrime have made many people hesitant about online engagement. In contrast, readers trust their local Costalink Magazine as a source of personalised, non biassed, local information, so they are more likely to trust you too. There’s very little risk for them in making a visit, a call, WhatsApp or sending an email.

5. Opportunities To Be Seen

While online and social media have been ‘in the moment’, your local Costalink Magazine has staying power. It will stay on a coffee table, in an office or café for a whole month, until the next edition is published. It is usually picked up, taken and shared with family and friends. That means your advertisement can be seen over and over again.

6. Spin-off Brand Benefits

Your local Costalink Magazine has a great reputation for interest and authority. People trust what they see, and your brand and business will benefit as a result.

7. Staying power

Costalink Magazine has been around for a long time, we are celebrating 16 years in 2023, yet we maintain our freshness and relevance so readers and businesses who already advertise recognise its value. Commit to a campaign of advertising and you can build your recognition.

8. Extra Opportunities

Your local Costalink Magazine here in the Costa del Sol has an excellent distribution network of over 600 approved outlets from Fuengirola to Sotogrande and growing. If you want to complement your advertising with a coupon, a digital voucher or flyer you know it will arrive safely. Your extra promotional material is much more likely to be read when it arrives with your advert within Costalink Magazine.

9. Brand power

Take the opportunity to create consistency across all your channels, so wherever people come into contact with you they will see the same messages and images. You will reach new audiences in a printed and digital Costalink Magazine and become a well-recognised local business.

10. Measurability

You know exactly when your advertisement will appear and where, so you can measure the response. We help you make your call to action very specific and you’ll know exactly how effective your advertisement has been.
