2021 – what a bump in the middle hump of the year. Yeek!

Well, its behind us now, so let’s put that one to bed and enough said, Amen.

One month of Spring left and then ‘The Endless Summer’, that we all need. I don’t know about you but I’m going camping, surfing, exploring and generally living the Aussie lifestyle that we know.

Cover photographer, Sébastien Bachellereau, is a drone expert who has captured these amazing images on the cover and images placed throughout the magazine. If you’re a surfer or water crazy enthusiast, book a session with Sébastien and get your own personal drone collection.

Hello Beaches COVERED. ‘Love on your Local Spring / Summer 2021/2022.

Lots of little guys and gals are getting a shout-out in this issue. Thanks goes to the business sponsors of these pages. Please get out and visit your local businesses and show them all some love. They need it!

Coco Republic is new in town. You can visit them in Manly Vale and grab a bite at their L’Americano Espresso Bar.

Win a copy of the new children’s book ‘The Best Cat, The Est Cat’ an intriguing tale about Australia’s oldest library.

James Griffin leads the way forward with a plan. Jason Falinski is determined to clear our traffic congestion. Axelle Simons was the W inner of our Winter cover colouring-in competition, while Matt Gould’s West Head fort shot was voted the pic of the season.

If you own property on the Beaches, it’s good to know you’ve probably made a lazy

million bucks this year. At least. We talk to Upstate on how they are changing the face of real estate.

Richard Sheppard from inSynergy ‘Loves his Locals’ and tells us how to use that equity we have in our homes for property wealth planning. We have solar smart homes by Solarpro, CKC dream kitchens, Beaches Blinds & Shutters, and how to energise your living space with flooring to match your lifestyle. Nice one Choices Flooring Balgowlah.

Fill your Christmas stocking with Lifestyle finds. There’s a stunning new car from Volvo; diamonds from Manly’s best friend - Manly Jewellers; and a new designer fashion pop-up shop in Brookie – Sale Lab.

Take a road trip and stay at Milton. Or, jump on a tour of Brookvale – there are alot of cool-cats starting to make Brookie Town pump.

As the song goes, ‘That’s where we want to go...’ way down to Kokomo in Mona Vale. Or perhaps visit some of the best cafés in the north, like the Zubi trio in Newport, Narrabeen and Bilgola.

When it’s all said and done, celebrate this festive season with a few days of non- alcoholic drinks from Sans Drinks with their yummy mocktails and dreams.

I can feel a breath of fresh air just around the corner, it’s called NYE.

That’s a wrap from the BC team in 2021. Have fun in the sun.

The Beaches’ Hidden Gems

WE ALL REMEMBER EXACTLY WHERE WE WERE WHEN WE DISCOVERED ‘5KM IN LOCKDOWN’ ACTUALLY MEANT 5KM FROM YOUR LGA, NOT YOUR HOME! AFTER THAT WE QUICKLY REALISED WE HAVE 254KM(2) OF PLAYLAND AND THE FINEST LGA IN THE WORLD! YEP! HERE ARE NINE OF THE BEST PLACES WE (RE)DISCOVERED DURING LOCKDOWN.

What about you? Share your favourite local hidden gems @coveredhub #localgems #NBLGA

BARRENJOEY LIGHTHOUSE, PALM BEACH

Best with the family

If you only had 30 minutes to change your life, you’d probably do this walk! Picturesque and pretty, not to mention manageable for most fitness levels, and kids, the walk to Barrenjoey Lighthouse in Palm Beach will take you around 30 minutes each way from Governor Phillip parking area. If you want something a little more challenging, take Smugglers track. We’ll see you at the top!

WEST HEAD LOOKOUT, KURINGGAI CHASE

Best for a road trip

If you haven’t got out of Sydney yet, jump in the car and turn up the tunes. Pack a picnic, don’t forget your swimmers, and hit the road to West Head. It really is one of Sydney’s best kept secrets (until Jimmy took Holly there on The Bachelor). Climb down the West Head army track to historic army battery (0.45km one way/ 1-130 hours) or take the Aboriginal Heritage walk full of rock art and engravings (4.4km loop/ 2.5-3.5 hours). The dramatic coastal views are unforgettable. And don’t forget to wave at your mates at the Lighthouse.

DEE

WHY TO CURL CURL HEADLAND WALK

Best for a Sunday stroll

Perfect for whale spotting and dolphin gazing at this time of year the Dee Why to Curl Curl headland walk is one of the best on the coast. Special views of our beautiful beaches, ups and downs that even the littlest kids can handle and some great spots to set up a picnic for the afternoon. Kick off from Curl Curl, entry from the Surf Club carpark, or Dee Why Headland, at the south end. The walk is 1.6km one way and will take you about 45 minutes depending on how often you stop to say, ‘Wow’.

ALLENBY PARK, ALLAMBIE

Best for a bushwalk

Covering 42 hectares across Allambie Heights, Beacon Hill and Brookvale, Allenby Park is the place to meet your zen and spend a little extra time in nature. Various trails stretch over 2.5km. There are great views of the coast and some of the most insta-worthy waterfalls that are often bursting after rain. Pack a sandwich, pop on your walking shoes and get out there. Dogs are welcome but must be on a lead. Oh, and watch out for leeches.

THE QUEENSCLIFF TUNNEL, QUEENSCLIFF BEACH

Best for adventure

Take a rock hop out past Queenscliff Ocean pool and you’ll find a special, secret corridor. Hidden in the cliff face between Queenscliff and Freshwater Beaches is the most spectacular tunnel

carved into the rocks, originally by fishermen in 1908 who wanted a shortcut between Manly and Freshwater. When you discover the entrance to The Wormhole you’ve made it. Take note - the tunnel is only accessible in calm conditions and you’ll need to do a bit of rock hopping but on the right day, it delivers that perfect combination of magic and adventure. Just the way nature intended it.

STREET ART

Best for an artsy weekend

The Northern Beaches Council’s Street Art Program is inspiring artists, residents, businesses and property owners together to bring art to life in unexpected places around the beaches. Keep your eyes peeled around streets and laneways where murals are transforming the landscape. HERE ARE 3 TO GET YOU STARTED;

STONY RANGE, DEE WHY

Best with the kids

If you haven’t visited Stony Range in Dee Why, do yourself a favour. Tucked into the bushland behind Officeworks and Fitness First is the most divine parkland. The whole circuit will take around 20 minutes to explore on foot but there’s a good chance you’ll want to spend an hour. This little getaway is an adventure for the scenes with plenty of signs to guide you along the way. Discover plenty of plants you can touch, taste and smell plus fun surprises for the kids. It’s a beautiful place to let the little people explore.

COLLINS FLAT, MANLY Best for date day

Our Beaches

If you spend a lot of time around Manly and you haven’t made the trek to Collins Flat, do it this weekend. This hidden harbour beach is the ultimate location for a luscious swim and a romantic picnic. Burrowed beautifully between North Head and Little Manly Cove, it also offers a fab view across The Heads. Get there by boat or on foot. And don’t forget to take some photos.

SCOTLAND ISLAND

Best for a day trip

If you’ve lived on the beaches for a while and you still haven’t paid a visit to Scotland Island, book it in. Take the 10-minute ferry ride from Church Point wharf and enjoy a few hours on the Island with a BBQ at Tennis Court Wharf, hike up to the lookout and enjoy seeing how this unique community lives. Dogs are welcome. Go on a sunny day and be sure to double check the ferry times so you can get there and back without a hassle. •

CHELSEA WARNER

SYDNEY’S CHELSEA WARNER IS BACK WITH HER SECOND RELEASE FOR THE YEAR IN ‘NOT IN THE MOOD’. ANOTHER PLAYFUL R&B JAM, THIS NEW SONG IS BEGINNING A PERIOD OF EVOLUTION FOR CHELSEA AS A CONFIDENT LYRICIST AND PRODUCER, GROWING HER SOUND AND STYLE WITH MUSINGS ON THE EXPLORATION OF SELF-LOVE AND COMING OF AGE.

“‘Not In The Mood ‘ is about spending quality time with yourself. Hidden within its sassy, stand-offish veneer is a profound self-love that says it’s okay to just enjoy your own company. I wrote this track to try and understand myself better, noticing my desire to be more and more introverted. It’s a love song to solitude, and a diss to people who can make you crave it,” says Chelsea.

The multi-instrumentalist wrote ‘Not In The Mood’ at the beginning of 2020 where the experience of isolation helped trigger potent songwriting ideas. “I realised just how profoundly fulfilling spending time alone is, and really reconnected with myself for the first time in a while. I also realised it was exhausting interacting with people so often and that, this whole time, I was quite introverted.” explained Chelsea.

Sonically, the track moves between snapshots of gritty, jazzy R&B, laid back vibes and pop music, thus once again showcasing Chelsea’s superior production prowess.

“I made the beat first before writing the track, and this was the first time I’d done things in that order. Now it’s one of the main ways I write, since I spend so much time making beats. I remember stumbling on these weird chords when I was playing keys and thinking they were a cool basis for a song, then building everything else up from there! Like everything else last year, writing this was a blur, but I clearly had something I needed to say!”

For fans of alt-R&B acts such as Solange, KAYTRANADA and Milan Ring, Chelsea Warner’s debut EP ‘Drama’ sets her apart in Australia’s expanding neo soul scene. The EP features a collection of songs from a young woman evolving from girlhood to a more well-rounded brilliant R&B artist in the making.

“It’s an alternative R&B record that details my coming of age and selfactualisation. ‘Drama’ is the drama of living. The drama of growing up. The theatricality of the world. The way it feels like a stage, or that you’re always waiting to be seen. Either chasing or shrivelling up under the spotlight. The competitive, anxiety-inducing headrush of constantly unpacking the world and your place in it. The invisible audience that shadows you throughout adolescence, informing every moment and every decision. The main character energy in the narrative of coming of age.”

JOHNNY HUNTER

STRIKING, EVOCATIVE AND EXECUTED WITH A VIBRANCY THAT CAN INSTANTLY CAPTIVATE. SIMPLY TITLED ‘LIFE’, THE LATEST TRACK FROM THE SYDNEY GROUP FREELY DIVES INTO A MULTILAYERED SOUNDSCAPE THAT REFLECTS THE INTRICACIES AND UNPREDICTABILITY OF THE SUBJECT ITSELF.

Built on a foundation of strong guitars, rhythms and synth work that provide moments of euphoria amongst the brooding, ‘Life’ is a touchstone release for Johnny Hunter. Here, the band offers up a moment of catharsis - an avenue to find a renewed passion for life when we’re at our lowest.

As the band’s second release through Cooking Vinyl Australia, ‘Life’ is another stride forward for the band as they head into a new creative cycle of releases.

Johnny Hunter worked on the single with engineer Adam Greenspan (IDLES, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and Jack Moffitt (The Preatures) at Parliament Studios in Sydney.

Sonically, ‘Life’ moves between shades of IDLES, Fontaines D.C. and Parquet Courts. Vocalist Nick Hutt sings each lyric with an impassioned sense of yearning, the lyrics soaring against a beautiful synthesis of post-punk and airy synth-pop sounds.

“To find life is to find happiness, it is the ultimate end and purpose of our existence,” says Nick.

Signing with Cooking Vinyl Australia in 2021 has been an early sign that the band is well and truely into a next stage of their evolution. And now, with two arresting and dynamic releases under their belt for the year, Johnny Hunter’s sonic identity continues to thrive.

OUTFIT

SOUL-DRIVEN POP TRIO OUTFIT UNVEIL THEIR GRIPPINGLY HONEST DEBUT, ‘SUNNY’. THE SINGLE WRAPS TIM TAN’S INFECTIOUS POP MELODIES AROUND WARM GROOVES, LUSH CHORDS AND NARRATES BATTLES OF INTERNAL HEADSPACE SO VIVIDLY YOU’D MISTAKE THEM FOR YOUR OWN.

“‘Sunny’ came from a concept that Tim had in his head after hours of trying to fall asleep. The concept surrounded the sentiment of: I woke up, but in a way I guess I could have kept sleeping, describing the cyclical nature of day to day life at the time.

“We were in between houses, music industry took a dive due to the pandemic

and we really just needed a light at the end of the tunnel to move closer to.

“From there the song grew into a full concept dealing with issues around mental health and finding comfort in what and who you have around you to collectively move towards the sunnier, sunnier, sunnier place,” explained the band.

For the music video, outfit brought the fun to band members’ houses and home studios with direction from Aydin Bozkurt.

“We really wanted to paint a picture about what the song represents to us and what it could represent to others so we were focused on filming the video at home and depicting a time of unrest between close friends. We really felt like it was important during this time to speak about how deeper conversation can really be the missing element in the lives of people close to you and most issues are positively affected by conversation and not silence, especially with the world dealing with new kinds of connections and disconnections,” says outfit.

Originally from Perth, the band has played together and separately over multiple projects. Tim, since living in Sydney and Melbourne, has focused on songwriting/producing for the Korean music scene. During this time, Tim’s work has accumulated a staggering 200,000,000 plus streams and 1.1 million physical unit sales.

DOMINIC BREEN

THE LONG-AWAITED DEBUT ALBUM FROM SYDNEY’S DOMINIC BREEN IS OUT IN THE WORLD.

RELEASED VIA SYDNEY LABEL DOUBLE DRUMMER - GRETA STANLEY, COUSIN TONY’S BRAND NEW FIREBIRD, ‘BLUE VOLUME’ SEES BREEN DEEP DIVE INTO THEMES OF IDENTITY, ANXIETY, HOPE, DISILLUSIONMENT, YEARNING AND LOVE.

‘Blue Volume’ is a gorgeous, bold and textural statement. Each song is its own little microcosm, yet the whole thing fits together perfectly like a 10 piece jigsaw. It features acclaimed singles ‘James Street Tonight’, ‘Lovelost’, ‘Under Your Sorrow’ and most recent single ‘Real Hard Week’, which was just picked by Dave Ruby Howe for the Triple J Unearthed podcast.

Among the new tracks, there’s moments of longing - ‘Please Change Your Mind’, raucous alt-country - ‘The Place Where All Good Dreams Get Lost’ and sparkling dream-pop - ‘Give Me a Drink From The Cup of Your Hand’

“Blue Volume is kinda like a constellation. It’s constructed with lots of different experiences, adversities, people, some connected and similar, others far apart and totally disparate. Some shine brightly and others are cloaked and less obvious. It can be seen as a singular thing if you look at it a certain way, and it will illustrate a picture for you, or point you in a direction. I think the way it appears to you will depend on where you are and how you are. Whatever you get from it is true, but not true for everyone,” says Dominic.

Politics

SINCE THE LAST INSTALLMENT OF BEACHES COVERED, SYDNEY HAS BEEN THROUGH ITS LONG WINTER OF 15 WEEKS ‘LOCKED DOWN’.

mark Smith James Griffin

The big political news is of course, the resignation of NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. One year after her appearance at an ICAC hearing revealed her relationship with former MP Daryl Maguire, a new public hearing has begun. The corruption body is examining whether Berejiklian breached the public trust, or encouraged corrupt conduct during her 5 year secret relationship with Maguire, the disgraced former state member for Wagga Wagga. The inquiry will, in particular concentrate on $35 million in grants issued to the Riverina Conservatorium of Music, and the Australian Clay Target Association, in Maguire’s constituency while Berejiklian was Treasurer and they were in a relationship.

It is said that the behaviour or standards that one walks past, or ignores, is a reflection on oneself. This, in my opinion, is especially important when it comes to our elected leaders.

In a recorded phone call between Maguire and Berejiklian, she is heard to say “I don’t need to know about that.” About what? Doesn’t this rise to a level of suspicion for the former Premier? She has said that parliamentarians must report any suspicious activity immediately to authorities. Did she lead by example? I am casting no aspersions on her, or her integrity at this stage of the investigation, but the outpouring of sympathy and adulation towards her after her resignation has come as a bit of a surprise. I think she was the best performing Premier in Australia throughout the pandemic thus far, but that, to me, comes from a very low base. The Prime Minister also has a lot to answer for, especially with the vaccine rollout. But mistakes were made in NSW, notably early on (think Ruby Princess). And her decision not to lockdown Bondi sooner, and make the Western suburbs the target of some of the harshest covid restrictions in the world. Some of the people out there certainly do not hold Berejiklian in the most favoured light.

Even if she did perform admirably with the pandemic, and NSW as a whole, questions must still be asked about our elected officials integrity on the job.

I am still unsure on ICAC and its effectiveness. Perhaps investigations like this, importantly for public figures could remain secret until charges are laid. Barry O’Farrell resigned after forgetting that he received a $3000 bottle of Grange from a developer. Opinions are still split on whether he should have stood down. Does Gladys Berejiklians’ career as Premier need to come to an unceremonious end without any adverse findings to date? I don’t believe so.

Until the inquiry is over, speculation over her next move will run rampant. The most interesting is that if she is cleared, she would run for the federal seat of Warringah in the next general election. I hope this comes to pass, because that would be great to watch. •

HERE ARE A FEW UNCOMFORTABLE FACTS:

• For more than a decade, the growth of tourism spending in Manly signi cantly lagged behind the rest of Greater Sydney (3.24% pa vs 9.12% pa).

• Since 2017, less people, not more, have been catching the Freshwater Ferry to Manly on the weekend, and those who did, spent 40% less than the average tourist in greater Sydney.

• Weekend patronage on the Freshwater Class Ferry to Manly on the weekend was down 12 percent between 2017 and 2019.

• Domestic tourists spent on average $74 in Manly versus $107 elsewhere in Sydney.

YES, COVID-19 THUMPED OUR TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY SECTOR, BUT WE HAVE A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO PICK UP THE PIECES AND REBUILD STRONGER AND SMARTER.
THE HARD TRUTH IS THAT EVEN PRIOR TO COVID-19, OUR MANLY TOURIST ECONOMY WAS UNDERPERFORMING COMPARED TO BOTH THE NATIONAL AND SYDNEY AVERAGES.
REBUILD, REBRAND AND REBOOT JAMES GRIFFIN, MP  MEMBER FOR MANLY FB & INSTA @JAMESGRIFFINMP www.jamesgrif nmp.com References and data provided by NBC Destination Management Plan and Transport for NSW

Not only have less tourists come to Manly via the Freshwater Ferry for the last few years, but tourists have been spending less during their visit.

When 81% of all visitors, only contribute 18% of all tourist spending, some would see a problem, but it is in fact a signi cant opportunity.

Interestingly, international visitors, while only making up for 3% of all visitors, contributed 41% of all visitor spend due to their longer length of stay (66% of all visitor nights). This is the demographic we should target, and the time to start is now.

WHAT’S THE PLAN TO EMERGE WITH A STRONGER AND MORE SUSTAINABLE TOURISM INDUSTRY?

With domestic and international travel resuming, now is the time to rebuild a new local tourism offering.

The plan is not to increase visitor numbers, but to increase how much visitors spend when they’re here (yield). This will in turn sustainably grow our local visitor economy and not put pressure on our local infrastructure.

There is no doubt, the Northern Beaches is an extraordinary destination offering world-class experiences. We have a contemporary coastal lifestyle, which offers not only the beach and bush, but some of the nest dining and hospitality

that Sydney has to offer. There’s also a burgeoning Brookvale which is hosting an electric arts and cultural revival.

Rebuilding our tourism economy will provide bene ts beyond accommodation and retail. It will deliver a signi cant ripple effect to other sectors. Our tourism and hospitality sector accounts for 12% of all Northern Beaches jobs (13,000 jobs).

Over the past 18 months, the Manly Tourism and Economic Recovery Taskforce has developed and championed ideas that will support a sustainable year round, modern tourism offering.

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN NEXT?

In order to secure a higher yield tourist, we need to improve on a variety of measures.

A quicker journey time from the Airport to Manly. The perception that it takes ‘too long’ to get to Manly is one of the biggest barriers we face. The Manly Fast Ferry and quicker ferry services generally help break down the barrier that we face in securing overnight visitors from the CBD. A fact based discussion about the majestic Freshwater Ferries (which will stay in operation every weekend and public holiday year round) would have revealed the importance of having a both a quicker ferry working alongside the Freshwater if we are to have a long term sustainable tourism economy.

Highlighting Manly as a destination that you can visit ‘year round’. Focusing energy and attention on the great work of the businesses and offerings in Brookvale, led by collectives like the ‘Brookvale Arts District’ aka B.A.D.

Doubling visitor spending over the next ve years to 2026 to at least become comparable to the Greater Sydney growth rate.

Focus on attracting and developing events, including business events that drive overnight visitation in off peak seasons and mid-week.

INTRODUCING EXPERIENCE MANLY…

The Manly Tourism and Economic Recovery Taskforce I formed last year, to help navigate our way through the pandemic, will refocus and re-emerge as ‘Experience Manly’. Experience Manly is a collaborative, not-for-pro t that will support the Manly Chamber of Commerce, local venues, artists, events and ultimately work to achieve the aims set out in the Council’s Destination Management Plan.

Standing still right now is not an option. We must grab this moment in time to turn what has been a challenging year for our local economy into an opportunity.

Onwards and upwards! •

GETTING THE NORTHERN BEACHES OUT OF A JAM

IT IS TIME TO GET THE NORTHERN BEACHES ROARING BACK TO LIFE. WE HAVE SPENT TOO MUCH TIME IN LOCKDOWN, AND NOW WE NEED TO KICK BACK INTO GEAR.

Businesses are desperate to get back to doing good business, children want to see their friends and be back in the classroom and loved ones want to be reunited. No one more than me wants to waste another second of freedom, particularly in traffic jams.

But the harsh reality is, if you are venturing in and out of the Northern Beaches, you are more likely than not to get stuck in one. Let’s just recap quickly, according to Infrastructure Australia, Northern Beaches has three of the ten worst congested roads in Australia. We have the most congested corridor (Mona Vale to the City: the A8). Unnecessary congestion costs $8b a year and is rising at over 10 per cent per annum. The Infrastructure Australia Report highlights based on lost productivity. Warringah Road was $2.18 million per kilometre, while Mona Vale Road cost $1.92 million per kilometre. And finally, the traffic on Pittwater Road on most weekends is worse than virtually any other road at any other time. Google Mobility Data is already showing road traffic in NSW is almost at pre-pandemic levels.

This should have been 20 years ago, but Bob Carr and Labor Party sold off the road corridors. Now Chris Minns and the Labor Party want to cancel the Beaches Link Tunnel and spend the money somewhere else where the problem is not nearly as acute.

THIS IS NOT HYPERBOLE, THESE ARE THE FACTS:

• 60% of Northern Beaches’ commuting trips in 2016 were made by private motor vehicle compared to 18% by public transport and just 3.4% walking.

• 56,203 or 43.4% of the Northern Beaches Council area’s resident workers travel outside of the area to work.

• More than half (53%) of Northern Beaches’ households own two or more vehicles, which is 7% higher than Greater Sydney.

• A8 corridor between the Northern Beaches and North Sydney is one of the ve most congested roads in Sydney in 2016. This corridor is forecast to be one of the 10 most congested roads in Sydney in 2031 as measured by total vehicle delays. This corridor is forecast to be one of the 10 most congested roads in Sydney in 2031 as measured by total vehicle delays.

• Wakehurst Parkway is closed on average of six times a year due to ooding.

• Traf c speeds on The Spit Bridge/Military Road are typically below 13 km/h during afternoon peak period.

• Speeds on the Warringah Road corridor are between 30-40 km/h throughout the week.

Many will say we need to increase our local transport system capacity, but the State Liberal Government has already done that: the B-Line bus service and the increased use of the Manly Fast Ferry has enhanced our local transport system.

This was good, but long overdue and just catchup. In the 2019 Audit during AM and PM peak demand, Northern Beaches bus services are forecast to exceed crush capacity for the majority of the services to the Sydney CBD. And still Labor and their independent mates want to cut transport spending even as they plan to increase our population.

The reality is many use our cars for school drop offs or work with over 20 per cent of the local workforce according to 2016 ABS data in labouring, machine operating or trades.

The Northern Beaches Council population forecast for 2021 is 270,642, and is forecast to grow to 312,503 by 2041.

There is no doubt the traffic congestion issue on the Northern Beaches is only going to get worse.

WHAT WE NEED TO FIX?

The Beaches Link can’t come soon enough.

The 11-kilometre proposed tunnel links the Northern Beaches to the Warringah Freeway in North Sydney is expected to provide travel time savings of up to 27 minutes between Brookvale and the Sydney CBD and up to 56 minutes from Dee Why to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.

When you compare those time savings to other transport projects in Australia, literally nothing beats it. The $26b metro system actually saves less than five minutes, the $8b North West Metro saved less than nine minutes, and $25b West Connex saves less than 20 minutes. It will be a pivotal piece in expanding Sydney’s Eastern Economic Corridor that contributes two thirds of NSW economic growth.

If Labor and their independent mates are not elected it is expected to be finished in 2028.

The Federal Government is waiting for a specific proposal to come from the State Government but has already indicated that it was willing to up its already pledged $50 million input, plus help fund upgrading Wakehurst Parkway.

Wakehurst Parkway is the most dangerous and perilous roads in the state. This is a road that chokes off the Northern Beaches six times a year and is notoriously dangerous to drive at night.

We all deserve better.

We need to part the sea of red tail lights on the Northern Beaches. Lets open our economy to more opportunities and unshackle ourselves from the daily slow grind of commuting with an overhaul of our local roads. •

Our Cover is Blown

AS PROPERTY PRICES ON THE NORTHERN BEACHES CONTINUE TO SKYROCKET, (DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE $11M HOME IN FRESHWATER?) IT’S CLEAR TO SEE WHY EVERYONE WANTS A PIECE OF OUR BEAUTIFUL BEACHES LIFESTYLE. ACCORDING TO UPSTATE DIRECTOR, LACHLAN YATES, THERE IS STILL MORE GROWTH TO COME.

What we’ve known about the Northern Beaches for years has now leaked to the mainstream property marketlifestyle is our number one priority.

And the once city exclusive, to those comfortable dropping $5 million+ to secure property in the Eastern Suburbs, we now see tremendous value in a house near the beach for $3 million, especially in a work-from-home lifestyle.

“At Upstate, we’ve seen up to 80% growth for some homes, and 35-55% growth in apartments in a 12-month period, particularly since Covid,” says Lachlan Yates, Director at Upstate.

It started with a little leak last year, and has surmounted into the explosion of property values and record sales we’re experiencing now. Yep, our cover is blown on our little piece of paradise

and everybody wants in. And they’re willing to pay for it.

“The market was moving quicker than we’ve seen and it was hard to price. We can read it better now and there’s still growth to come,” adds Lachlan.

“There was also a 30% jump in rents. People still want to live here even though they can’t afford to buy here.”

Styling Matters

Styling your home for sale could be the smartest decision you make.

When it comes to marketing your property, the magic touch from a styling expert could be the difference between selling your home faster and for a better price.

From bland living room to family oasis, or vacant deck to entertainer’s paradise, we’ve watched this story unfold hundreds of times.

Sue Roche, Founder of The Styling Project in Brookvale, takes a hands-on and personalised approach to every property she styles.

“Moving is an emotional process and we do it 10 times a week. When I style a home for sale I think about every space in the house,” she says.

“I want to give the vendor the best opportunity to sell their house faster and for more.”

Sue’s extensive experience in interiors, real estate industry knowledge, and customer focus enables a superior level of service and maximum return on investment for her clients. “I always establish a rapport with the homeowner. Many of them are pleasantly surprised once we’ve styled their property,

others love it so much they don’t want to sell. More styling means more money for the owners,” she adds.

“Upstate understand how important it is to style a house well when it’s going on the market. I love working with Upstate’s Concierge team – we work very closely together to get the best results.”

Statistics prove property styling wins because it evokes an emotional response to a home. Daniel Angus is the Sydney Branch Manager at Furnish and Finish Property Styling.

“People want the dream home look they’ve seen in magazines and house shows,” he says.

“We really enjoy working with the Concierge team because it’s a fantastic service not a lot of real estate agents offer. The team are a dream and the communication is amazing. Everything works.”

Thinking about selling? At Upstate we make it our business to work with the experts. Our property styling partners know how to transform your home into a place people love. Property styling gets better results for our sellers every single time.

Planning WEALTH

Richard Sheppard WITH

PROPERTY WEALTH PLANNING

INSYNERGY FOUNDER, RICHARD SHEPPARD, IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE BUILD A POSITIVE FINANCIAL FUTURE THROUGH PROPERTY INVESTMENT. WHILE MANY PEOPLE THINK PROPERTY INVESTMENT MEANS SACRIFICING THEIR CURRENT LIFESTYLE, RICHARD IS HAPPY TO HELP THEM SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY. READ ON TO LEARN HOW INSYNERGY CAN HELP YOU OPTIMISE YOUR WEALTH THROUGH PROPERTY INVESTMENT.

What is property wealth planning and why do you need it?

Whilst it’s common knowledge that a financial planner helps you create a personal financial plan, often including areas such as tax, estate, investment and retirement planning, many people don’t realise there’s a similar professional service that deals specifically with property investment. Property wealth planning is a very specialist field and generally sits outside the domain of financial planners.

What exactly is Property Wealth Planning?

Just as you need a life plan for your other financial needs, you also need a carefully planned strategy for investing in property. A property wealth planner is ideally someone who has the experience, skills and appropriate qualifications in several areas including property investment finance broking, so they are equipped to help you understand how to use and build equity and incorporate other finance techniques to increase returns while minimising risk. They should also be a qualified investment property buyers agent with capability in researching the whole Australian property market and ideally a qualified property investment advisor with PIPA, (Property Investment Professionals of Australia) which is the industry body that works to raise the professional standards of operators servicing consumers in property investment.

What does Property Wealth Planning include?

EQUITY PLANNING: How much cash or equity is needed to invest in each property and how much cash or equity should be retained as a cash reserve buffer?

CASH FLOW MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING: How to maximise and manage cash flow without increasing risk or reducing capital growth can mean the difference between a good and great property portfolio.

PROPERTY MARKET RESEARCH: Some property markets around Australia can literally grow ten times more than other markets in the same ten year period while having net rental returns 2-3 times higher. Knowing which markets and properties to invest in and when to sell them is crucial.

PORTFOLIO PLANNING: You can’t really create great wealth with just one property. A good property wealth planner should

help you invest in a multi-property portfolio safely over the coming years.

RISK IDENTIFICATION AND MANAGEMENT: Although property is considered lower risk, there are still many risks, especially with long-term off-the-plan property. All risks can essentially be avoided or minimised with the right strategy in place.

DEBT AND MORTGAGE PLANNING: Advanced mortgage broking and investment finance techniques may help increase returns by many hundreds of thousands of dollars over a ten year period while reducing risk.

RETIREMENT PLANNING: Having a strong understanding of how much property you need in addition to other assets for when you want to fully or semi-retire will help you calculate what you need to save, or can spend on a better lifestyle in the meantime.

TAX PLANNING: A property wealth planner doesn’t need to be an Accountant, but having a good general understanding of tax as it relates to property is very important. Income tax, capital gains tax, goods and services tax and land tax must all be considered as they can impact on both your cash flow and net wealth creation through property. A property wealth planner will also collaborate with your accountant to ensure their tax advice is incorporated.

Property wealth planning brings these concepts together and can help you prepare for the more challenging times in life.

If for example you started with around $100,000 of cash or spare equity, a good property wealth planner should usually be able to help you safely increase your net wealth by 5–10 times each decade and retire on around 1–2 times your current income within 15 years.

Smart solar for your home

IF YOU WANT TO SAVE MONEY, SAVE ENERGY, AND ADD VALUE TO YOUR HOME, INSTALLING SMART SOLAR IS THE NEXT BIG STEP.

While the world continues to talk about climate change (Hello COP26 Summit), the emphasis is also shifting to how we, as individuals and households, can be more accountable and take responsibility for our own carbon footprint.

Solarpro are the Northern Beaches’ oldest and most experienced residential solar power experts and pride themselves on their seamless ability to design and install solar panels to match your home.

“The truth is Solar panels do not have to look ugly,” explains Managing Director, David Veal. “We design our installations with aesthetics in mind. The technology and aesthetics now are game changing.”

Solarpro are a family-run business that started out installing solar hot water systems. They have since become

renowned for their bespoke, fully customised systems, great customer service, and expert advice, geared to a more holistic approach.

“Our primary expertise is in turning homes into Smart Homes. We use technology to give customer’s control over how they use their solar power. It’s more ef cient and ends up giving them a better ROI.”

Depending on your home environment, Solarpro will cater to different needs and budgets using a combination of solar power and battery storage, hot water systems, and solar pool heating (if required) and help bring your energy bills as near to zero as possible.

Dan Day lives on the Northern Beaches and engaged Solarpro to install solar on their four-bedroom home 12 months ago.

“When we decided to get solar on our home, I did a lot of research,” says Dan. “We went with Solarpro because they were a fantastic company, and their advice and customer service were excellent. We appreciated their expertise and of all the companies we looked at, they had been in the business for the longest.”

SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY

Did you know Australia has the highest uptake of solar globally, with around 30% of homes with rooftop solar PV?

“We have just done the rst installation in Australia of SOIIOS building integrated solar panels that are in the roof rather than on it,” adds David. So, if you’ve been waiting for solar to ‘look’ more appealing, the wait is over. SOIIOS panels are designed

Property 46

for new builds or roof renovations and perfect for customers who are after a sleek look. And while it can be more expensive, they can also be retro tted to a roof.

Like electric vehicles, our homes are getting clever now too and Solarpro’s primary expertise is how to turn regular homes into Smart Homes.

“There are a lot of clever things that can be done including getting Solar Powered Pool Heat Pumps to run free on the sun, storing solar power as thermal energy in hot water tanks, and room heaters,” explains David.

Solarpro also have the world’s first Solar EV charging inverter. “Many people assume all EV chargers use solar but they don’t.”

And for those who want to have the greatest impact a Fully Integrated Smart Energy System has all the environmental bells and whistles.

Having a Solar Storage Battery also makes financial and environmental sense, and Solarpro have a range to choose

from including Powerwall. The ROI on a solar power and battery system is currently much higher than other investment options and it opens up opportunities to join Virtual Power Plants (VPPs).

Cabinent Lift Systems

It’s the smallest things that can make a difference to a new kitchen design. Installing overhead cabinets that lift up and out of the way, like Blum Australia’s AVENTOS lift systems can make tasks like unpacking the dishwasher more efficient. For a little more luxury, combine the SERVO-DRIVE electronic easy touch and open lift system.

Dress your kitchen

A good kitchen design should serve as a reflection of you, your family, and how you use it on a daily basis. It’s the added little touches like a treasured family heirloom - a French Mortar and Pestle handed down from generation to generation, that make this kitchen special.

Light up to impress!

Lighting inside your cabinet spaces not only shows off your neatly packed wine glasses, plates and bowls but makes choosing the right dish a breeze. The design team at Collaroy Kitchen Centre recommend choosing LED lightsthey definitely tick all the boxes in terms of efficiency.

eco-friendly paints local Shop

WITH COVID DELAYING IMPORTS AND KEEPING BORDERS CLOSED, THERE’S A RE-SET TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES THAT EMPLOY LOCAL PEOPLE. COLORMAKER INDUSTRIES, YOUR LOCAL PENINSULA PAINT COMPANY, IS A SUSTAINABLE PAINT MANUFACTURER THAT MAKES HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTS IN THEIR BROOKVALE FACTORY.

Most formulations are water-based and low-VOC, so they’re better for the planet and better for you!

POWERED BY SOLAR

Colormaker recently celebrated the 2nd anniversary of going Solar. Over 2 years, the 100 kW Solar installation saved over 300 tonnes of GHGs, generating enough clean electricity to power 41 local homes for a year. The solar array powers paint manufacturing, warehouse, shop and office and even an allelectric delivery vehicle.

NET ZERO BY 20252030

With not a moment to lose, Colormaker has made excellent progress towards a sustainability plan of net zero by 2025-30. Whilst ambitious, the team is very much up for this challenge.

MATCH ANY COLOUR

Colormaker is renowned for premium quality interior and exterior house paints and heavier duty construction coatings. Take in a sample or colour reference and they will match almost any colour you require for walls, floors or home exterior, including colours from all the major brands.

MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE THROUGH COLOUR

AUSTRALIAN MADE AND OWNED

All Colormaker paints, inks and coatings are 100% Australian made, right here on our sunny Northern Beaches, so you know that your spending is supporting the local economy.

WORLD CLASS PRODUCTS

Colormaker manufactures world-class products at the Brookvale factory, including Australia’s leading swimming pool paint and Organic Approved, eco-friendly screen-printing inks, made in Brooky and exported all over the world.

REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Colormaker’s focus on solvent free, water-based and low-VOC technologies has led to the roll out of some world leading products, with more in the pipeline. Colormaker is committed to eliminating harmful chemicals from its products.

Colour is in the DNA and always at the forefront at Colormaker. Their PERMAPLASTIK scenic paints have experienced a surge in popularity with the recent trend to bring vibrant colour to public spaces with murals and art installations.

SUPPORTING THE LOCAL NORTHERN BEACHES COMMUNITY

Colormaker Industries has partnered with the Council as Foundation Sponsor of the 2021 Northern Beaches Environmental Art and Design Prize. “As a sustainable paint business, we’re proud to be involved with this art prize.” advised Colormaker MD, David Stuart.

“We’re delighted that many of our paint products are used by locals, plus we love getting involved in the local community, supporting locally owned businesses and employing Northern Beaches people” he said.

Now that the COLORMAKER Paint Shop is open again, why not drop in to seek advice about your next painting project?

Eden Garden Style

Holidays are back on the agenda and it’s time to getaway? You’ve organised the pets, organised remote home security even, but what about your garden? Plan your departure in a garden friendly manner and you might even find your place looking better when you get home than when you left.

Water well before you go. The night before, go out into the garden and give everything a long soak. Put the sprinklers on the lawn, water your hanging baskets and pots and give garden beds a good drink.

After watering, apply Yates Drought Shield to any of your vulnerable plants, such as pot plants, hydrangeas or newly planted seedlings. This acts as a sun block or anti-transpirant and will help your plants survive extreme heat for up to 90 days.

Move any exposed pot plants into a sheltered position and group them together. You can even place them inside polystyrene boxes to give them some insulation. Place indoor plants on a wet towel in the bath or laundry tub. Give them a good drink and then leave the tap dripping ever so slowly so that they stay humid and moist.

Cut back flowers that are nearing the end of their flush. When you return, they probably will have rebudded. Trim your lawn and when you come back see how green it is.

On your return, give everything a good long soak again and gradually return plants into their normal positions, rather than shock them. Give everything a ‘spa treatment’ with Seasol Hose On Complete Garden Health Treatment. •

Garden Style 2022

EACH YEAR, THE FLOWER COUNCIL OF HOLLAND RELEASES THEIR PREDICTIONS FOR THE TRENDS FOR FLOWERS, HOUSEPLANTS AND OUTDOOR PLANTS. SO, WHAT IS THE ZEITGEIST PREDICTIONS FOR 2022? MEREDITH KIRTON FROM EDEN GARDENS MACQUARIE PARK LETS US KNOW WHAT’S IN FOR 2022.

They are: Fresh Start, Bright and Breezy, Traditional Sentiment, and Wellness Bubble.

One of the other big predictors for trends is the Pantone Colour Palettes. Tones such as Baby’s Breath (11-0202), Beach Glass (13-5412), and Blue Atoll (16-4535) are going to feature in interiors with touches of Illuminating Yellow (13-0647) and Indigo Bunting (18-4250) set to make spring and summer splashes.

So, what does this mean for interiors, balconies, and backyards? Basically, l ots of white, touches of aqua and hints of sunshine.

Then, as the season gets going, extra colour highlights come to the party,

with splashes of apricot, touches of tangerine and lavender creates more of a bouquet of colour, like a spring posy.

Variegated and white flowering plants are huge, and everything that’s plant based, biodegradable and encourages biodiversity is in.

Think cork, string, moss, clay and stone in materials, with coloured glass and brighter ceramics used to create a bright and breezy feel.

Plants that breathe, materials that are enviro-friendly and products that are multi-functional and versatile help create a relaxed vibe that still works hard in the background to make your heart and mind sing and celebrate new beginnings. •

SUMMER MARKET FRESH WITH YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL GROCER, THE HARBORD GROWERS MARKET.

CHERRIES

Tis’ the season of the Cherry. Cherries just scream, “Christmas is coming.” There’s nothing better than a handful of plump, ruby red cherries on a Chrissie cheeseboard or a Summer cheesecake dessert. But you’d better be quick! The cherry season lasts for only around 100 days. So get down to the Growers or these juicy morsels before they’re all gone.

EGGPLANT

Love them or hate them, Eggplants, or Aubergines, are an excellent source of dietary fibre. A great meat alternative, slice your eggplant evenly, drizzle with Extra Virgin Oil and freshly cracked pepper and salt and grill on the barbeque. Chargrill till tender on the inside, crispy on the edges. Lovely on its own, or, as part of a grilled vegetable platter.

PAPAYA

Understated, the Payaya is a fabulous fruit to add to any breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert. Dice it up to create a Papaya and Black Bean Salsa. Blend with strawberries and bananas to make a tropical smoothie. Create an amazing salad with Chicken, Avocado, Quinoa, Feta Cheese and a zesty lime dressing. For something sweet, bake a mind-boosting Papaya and lime cake served with semi-sweet greek yoghurt.

MANGOES

Mangoes are an icon, an Aussie icon. Who doesn’t love a deliciously sweet mango? When it comes to choosing, don’t be fooled by the colour. Red or pink in colour is not an indicator of ripeness. Squeeze the mango gently. A ripe mango will give slightly. Whether it’s a Kensington Pride, Calypso® or R2E2, they’re all rich in juicey flavour and can be added to any salad, breakfast bowl or just eaten on their own.

TOMATOES

LETTUCE

Iceberg, Cos, Hydro, Butterhead, Looseleaf, Radicchio, Mignonettethere’s an array of lettuces available to add to your fresh Summer salads. A great source of Vitamin K which helps strengthen bones, lettuce is just the perfect salad staple. But you don’t need to stop there. Create San Choy Bow with flavoursome pork, sliced onion and carrot basil and mint. Or a simple garden salad with cherry tomatoes and a Summer vinaigrette.

Sweet tasting, there’s so much you can add a tomato to. Bruschetta, for one, is a great Summer starter with oven caramelised cherry tomatoes. How about a classic savoury French tarte tatin with tomatoes, red onion, and dried herbs. And you can’t go past a tantalising Bloody Mary with a dash of Worcestershire sauce and pepper. The choices are fun and endless. BUY

XCLENT: VOLVO’S STUNNING SUV SET FOR AN EVEN GREENER FACELIFT.

A LONG TIME AGO IN ANOTHER GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY VOLVO WAS SEEN AS A SAFE BUT DOWDY SWEDISH BRAND THAT HAD GREAT ENGINEERING AND THE BEST LEVELS OF SAFETY ON THE ROAD.

Back then Volvo’s were as dowdy as Dad’s old Holden Special, but then things changed.

Today in another millennium and in the here and now Volvo is a very different proposition. It hasn’t lost the engineering and safety edge, but it is so far from the staid and conservative machines of the past to be almost unrecognisable.

Volvo is now a maker of smart, svelte and highly efficient cars and SUVs and the latest XC60 just launched is an impressive SUV in terms of both looks and performance.

Fact is, that like many makers, Volvo is full steam ahead with an electrification program that will see its entire range powered by electricity by 2030. In fact, XC60 will be all electric by 2024.

The X6 will only be offered in what Volvo calls a mild-hybrid, a B5 and the B6 both with a two litre turbo internal combustion engines coupled to an electric hybrid driveline ensuring a significant boost in power and efficiency.

The two XC60 models use the kinetic energy created during deceleration which is then stored in the 48-volt battery and used momentarily by the integrated starter generator to boost the turbo petrol engine. The electric motor also acts as a starter to rev-up the engine instantly yet smoothly for more effortless take-off. Overall, this seamless technology delivers a smoother and more fuel-efficient driving experience.

The B5 models produce 184kW and 350Nm and come in front-wheel drive

and all-wheel drive format, while B6 variants feature all-wheel drive exclusively and produce a whopping 220kW and 420Nm.

It means that the electric motor increases power to the driveline and dramatically improves the XC60’s efficiency and performance.

Another new feature in the XC60 that Volvo is ushering in is single pedal operation, an advanced brake-by-wire energy recovery system, that allows drivers to control acceleration and deceleration using just the accelerator pedal.

That might sound weird, but let me tell you the braking ability delivered via the regenerative resistance in the power train is quite amazing.

Volvo has already rolled the concept out in its pure electric XC40 Recharge and it is the way of the future.

The XC60’s main motive force comes from its lively and highly efficient 2.0litre turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine, which the company says has cut CO2 emissions by about 50 per cent, which is an impressive eco credential, particularly when mated with that electric capability.

The new Volvo XC60 is an impressive looking, stylish and extremely capable SUV that will carry on an build on the popularity of the second gen XC60 model that Volvo introduced back in 2017.

The XC60 squares up against the likes of Audi’s Q5 and the Benz GLC and gives nothing away to its German rivals in

terms of handling performance or style. There certainly would be no embarrassment parking the XC60 on the porte cochere of any expensive hotel alongside any of its Euro counterparts.

The facelifted XC60 2022 models get revised from styling a new Android Automotive infotainment system.

All model year 2022 Volvo cars and SUVs will be either mild- or plug-in hybrids or all-electric so the Swedish brand is well on its way to achieving that goal of becoming all electric in a little over eight years.

Behind the wheel of the XC60 you get a rewarding and responsive drive with sharp handling, great ride and plenty of urge with a clear conscience that you are at the very least being relatively kind on the environment.

If you had not considered Volvo on your shopping list in the past, now is the time to take another look at the handsome Swedes, and you might just be very surprised and delighted. •

Luxury Living

IN THE 1980S,

If you’ve been dreaming of a homewares store that delivers luxury lifestyle without having to leave the Beaches, we’re happy to tell you it’s here.

Coco Republic, one of Australia and New Zealand’s leading furniture and design brands, launched its brand-new superstore on Hayes Street, Balgowlah in October. Set on 2650m2, the threestorey supersite and L’Americano Espresso Bar, designed by award winning Architects, is set to revolutionise luxury retail in Australia.

“My favourite part of the new Balgowlah store is the sheer scale of the showroom which enables us to portray the whole Coco Republic collection,” says Coco Republic’s Co-CEO and Chief Creative Officer, Anthony Spon-Smith.

“The showroom has been designed in a way that allows easy flow for the customer, and due to the scale of the showroom, all our collections are beautifully presented. I also like the new L’Americano café. With its scale and design, it is one of the best cafés we have launched in Australia.”

Family owned and operated, Coco Republic has been helping clients curate breathtaking interiors and exceptional outdoor spaces for over 40 years.

Inside the new Balgowlah store, customers are calmly transported into an interior oasis, complete with a homewares gallery, rug gallery and outdoor furniture gallery, plus a private dining room for events. And for those wanting to inject Coco’s unique interior design expertise into their home, there are dedicated design labs.

“We have separate meeting rooms for our interior design service, where our interior design team can meet with clients and create a bespoke interiors plan tailored to refreshing the interiors of their home,” he adds.

CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY

Coco Republic has maintained its presence as an industry leader, innovating to deliver an ecosystem of furniture, homewares, and design that fuels a passion for the home that’s unique within the industry worldwide.

“The heritage is woven into the fabric of the company, offering not only sophisticated attention to detail but ground-breaking innovation combined with the finest craftsmanship and quality,” explains Anthony.

An in-house team led by Anthony SponSmith designs and procures classic and contemporary pieces that stand the test of time. The brand offers elegant and modern designs along with superior comfort, immaculate furnishings, and bold and beautiful statement collections for inside and outside the home.

“We launch two main furniture and homewares collections, in store and online, each year - Summer and Winter. Plus, we release one main outdoor furniture collection in September/ October. We also have smaller homewares collections including lighting, art, mirrors, rugs, pots and planters, décor, books and more,” he says.

The Summer 2022 Collection channels the collective spirit of the California desert. Inspired by cool minimalism and a wind sculpted landscape, it creates

a palette lending itself to the creation of light and fresh interiors, encompassing heroic yet subtle pieces.

“Creating simple furniture design is not easy; to me it is a process of elimination, taking away just enough to end up with an honest piece that resonates with you and just works. I am proud to have achieved this within our new Summer Collection.

“The combination of natural elements, colours and raw materials juxtaposed with stronger aesthetics like marble work so well. You will see natural fabrics, timber and rattan and dry tonal minimalistic designs,” adds Anthony.

Whether you’re after a sofa or accent chairs, dining table, sunlounges or fire accessories, Coco Republic ticks every box to relax throughout summer in style.

“Simply put, outdoor furniture curates a way of living. My goal always is to design outdoor furniture that collaborates with and improves the architecture of the home providing an inviting exterior that moulds the way you live.”

Coco Republic have showrooms in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Canberra, and Auckland and the group recently announced that they will be setting up stores in California. But for now, the flagship showroom in Balgowlah is just the home we need.

“This really is a coming home for the business in many ways. Also, given the beautiful coastal homes and the way of living on the Northern Beaches, we felt the brand and collections as they are now were very relevant.”

Welcome home, Coco Republic. We couldn’t agree more.

L’Americano Espresso Bar, located next door to the new Coco Republic superstore in Balgowlah would not look out of place on 5th Avenue.

If you jump on a bus on the Northern Beaches this Summer, you’ll be happy to know you’re in good hands.

Earlier this year, Transport for New South Wales announced that Keolis Downer would operate and maintain bus services in the Northern Beaches and the lower North Shore as part of an eight year contract from October 31, 2021.

The company is Australia’s largest provider of multi-modal public transport and the contract includes 406 buses out of Brookvale, Mona Vale, and North Sydney depots. It will also see the introduction of 125 electric buses over the next eight years, which means smarter and more sustainable transport from two newly electrified depots in Brookvale and Mona Vale.

“We are very proud to partner with TfNSW to support the future growth and transformation of the Northern Beaches. Drawing on our experience locally and globally, we will launch a range of new initiatives to enhance the customer experience building from the already excellent bus services in the area,” comments David Franks, Keolis Downer CEO.

KEEPING IT LOCAL

Working closely with State Transit Authority, Keolis Downer is really pleased to welcome close to 900 experienced operational, maintenance and support staff to continue the great service passengers are used to.

Mark Dunlop, Managing Director of Keolis Downer Northern Beaches (KDNB), said, “It’s an honour to be welcoming such an experienced workforce to continue providing quality service for our customers.”

“Most of our bus operators have been driving local bus routes for years. They know the network and are committed to delivering high quality customer service while getting passengers from point A to point B.”

“Leveraging off this wealth of knowledge, Keolis Downer Northern

Beaches will continue to build on their customer service values and promote the Think Like a Passenger ethos.”

Many locals are already familiar with Keolis Downer thanks to Keoride, an On Demand transport service, connecting customers from Palm Beach to North Narrabeen to B-Line bus stops. The popular app-based service has been operating on the Beaches since 2017 and has clocked up over half million passenger trips. Keoride will become a permanent feature of the public transport network as part of Keolis Downer Northern Beaches operations.

With Keoride being the most successful On Demand service in Australia, CEO David Franks confirms, “The Keolis Downer customer culture is a major reason for the success of this service.

“Our drivers are part of the community and go through extensive training enabling them to deliver an optimal passenger experience. They are committed to go above and beyond to keep our customers happy.”

Keoride will be introducing four new vehicles to the already eight strong fleet. Four accessible mini-buses will allow for increased passenger capacity, with the ability to transport up to 18 people including wheelchairs and prams.

With new headquarters planned for Warriewood by the end of this year, Keoride will be an established operation and a familiar face on the beaches, offering safe and reliable transport to complement a busy and complex bus service.

PANDEMICPROOF EMPLOYMENT

While many businesses have suffered over the past 18 months, Keolis Downer have continued to recruit nationally with a new focus at a local level to meet renewed demand for public transport.

As we emerge from COVID, there are great opportunities for the Northern Beaches community. Keolis Downer is advertising for Bus Operators of all levels of experience. Future campaigns will be targeted at a range of roles including apprentices. Keolis Downer

“We are proud to recruit, train and retain talented professionals throughout our operations, and are looking for hard working people to join us in servicing the transportation needs of our local community in the Northern Beaches and Lower North Shore.”

Milton Magic

If you’re ready for some fresh country air, a long, leisurely walk in nature with the kids, morning coffees with magnificent sunrises, sunset drinks on the deck, storytelling by the firepit with friends, and a chance to escape the gritty hustle and bustle, a South Coast getaway might just be what you’re after.

Only three hours from the Northern Beaches and nestled idyllically between the mountains and the sea, the quaint and historic town of Milton offers dreamy holiday delights for everyone.

“There’s something really special about the South Coast, especially Milton,” says Freshwater local, Darren Clarkin.

“The people are really accommodating and so friendly and there’s definitely a slower pace of life. You can kick back, relax and spend a day at one of the many amazing beaches. If you feel the need to go out there are so amazing places to eat and drink.”

In early 2020, while the world was taken hostage by Covid-19, the Clarkins

were busy looking for their dream holiday home.

“I was born in Manly and grew up on the Northern Beaches,” says Kylie Clarkin. “In high school my family moved to Ulladulla and I have many great memories of growing up on the South Coast. After high school, we came back to Manly, and I’ve always dreamed of having a holiday house down there.”

In October 2020 the Clarkins settled on Woodstock Homestead - a lush country property in the insta-worthy hills around Milton, and a mere seven minute drive from iconic beaches including, Mollymook and Narrawallee.

While the Clarkins initially bought the property as a secret haven for family getaways, they quickly discovered it was too perfect not to share with others.

“We thought it would just be a holiday home for the family, but once we invited

friends down, we realised we wanted to share the magic around. It really is the perfect place to relax and recharge. We put a listing on Airbnb and it took off,” says Darren.

COUNTRY DREAMING

Despite NSW lockdowns, the Woodstock Homestead calendar is filling up fast and a huge part of the appeal is its proximity to Sydney.

“It’s not too far from Sydney, and once you’re there, you are so close to everything. We love spending days at Mollymook, Narrawallee Inlet or Burrill Lake which is perfect for swimming with the kids. If you’re a keen surfer, there are great surf breaks. The amazing beaches of Jervis Bay are just a short car ride away. If you don’t feel like a day trip, it’s just as easy to stay at home, have a BBQ on the balcony, and play.”

There’s nothing quite like having locals, who know an area well, as your hosts and as far as Milton goes, the Clarkins have plenty of favourite hotspots.

“Peaches Cafe does a great breakfast and Pilgrims has the best Vegetarian food. Driftwood has the best view in Milton and excellent food and coffee. Another favourite is Milk Haus, which is only a few minutes from Woodstock Homestead - it serves clean fresh food and it’s amazing” smiles Darren.

In the evening, there are fantastic options too. “Try Small Town for good food and wine, Harvest Milton for amazing tapas and cocktails, or a short drive away is Rick Steins At Bannisters, Gwylo at Mollymook, and Cuppits Winery. We’re spoilt for choice!”

Book Now & Give Back

The Clarkins are conscious about giving back. A portion of profits from Woodstock Homestead are donated to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, CCELA (Care for Children and Elders Life Association) and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature).

On lazy days when you decide to stay home, there is plenty to do for young and old, and surrounding paddocks are home to resident farm animals who keep the kids entertained for hours.

“There is so much open space, we often play cricket or croquet as a family on the large lawns, plus we have a trampoline and a set of monkey bars to keep the kids entertained. The house is perfectly set up and well-equipped for two families,” adds Kylie.

If you’re a fan of beautiful interiors (who isn’t these days?) Woodstock Homestead will bring a smile to your face. The open-plan kitchen, living, and dining room ooze comfort and a floor-to-ceiling window overlooks rolling hills that are postcard-worthy from sunrise to sunset.

Each bedroom is divinely decorated and a second TV room means adults can talk, dine, and entertain while the younger crew have fun nearby without disturbing a soul. And the Clarkins have great plans for the property.

“Our immediate plan is to put in a pool, add an ensuite to each bedroom, and change some of the floor plan,” explains Darren.

“Mid-term, we‘ll be adding a separate studio for more accommodation and a yoga/multi-function room so you’ll be welcome for any occasion.”

Whether you’re craving a summer getaway filled with sandy-toed trips to the beach, or a winter escape complete with lazy evenings, firepits, and board games, Woodstock Homestead offers the ultimate chance to recharge, relax, and reconnect. The three-hour drive will be worth it. •

Positive Manifestation

Lift your Vibrations with Jill Healy Quintard

I HAVE A PASSION FOR HUMAN MOVEMENT, MUSIC AND I’M CALLING OUT TO YOU TO LIFT YOUR VIBRATIONS. RELEASE TO THE UNIVERSE BY SEEING, SAYING, FEELING AND MAKING THINGS HAPPEN. I BELIEVE THAT WE CAN MANIFEST WHAT WE WANT AND NEED BY CONSCIOUSLY TUNING INTO OUR HEARTS AND MINDS. THESE ARE MY STEPS TO MANIFEST ANYTHING YOU WANT!

BE CLEAR ON WHAT YOU WANT.

If you don’t know exactly what you want, you won’t be able to make it happen. To manifest, you must know what your heart and mind desires. You must be clear on the specifics, detail and features as if your manifestation is made for you and you can see what it looks like. Make a list of 10-15 things you’d like to manifest. Be specific, positive and avoid using the word ‘don’t’.

2.

ASK THE UNIVERSE.

Once you have your list, amplify your signal to the universe by asking for what you want. When the universe is clear on what you want to manifest, it will help you. There are a lots of ways to ask, such as through meditation, visualising and vision boards. If you like to write, a great way is to write a letter to the universe and ask for what you want.

3. WORK TOWARD YOUR GOALS.

Manifesting is the art of co-creating with the universe. Working toward your goals increases your chances of receiving what you want. Write down three actions you can do today to bring you closer to your goal. If you don’t know what to do, perhaps search on the Internet. Someone may have the same issue and has written about it. Allow yourself to be inspired by others.

4. TRUST YOURSELF AND THE PROCESS.

As you work toward your goals, you most likely will question if manifesting actually works. If you are sitting in the struggle and wondering when things are going to happen, this means you are not trusting the process.

One little trick to trust the process is when hearing yourself being negative, flick your earlobe and say something like “I am getting closer to my goals every day. The universe has my back and is amazing.” Yes, strange, but it works.

5. RECEIVE AND ACKNOWLEDGE.

The universe is always giving you help, but it’s easy to miss the signs especially when they come in unexpected ways. When you start to acknowledge the signs it will give you more of what you want.

A good way to start is to write down the evidence in a journal at the end of the day. Make sure to include anything that happened that moved you a little bit closer to your goal.

6. CLEAR YOUR RESISTANCE.

If you are finding it difficult to manifest what you want, it is likely you are resisting what the universe is offering you. Doubts, fears, pain, procrastination, frustrations, anxiety, regrets and resentments are all forms of resistance. This is totally normal, but will slow down your path to manifest what you really want.

When you are aware of a conflict, acknowledge it. Remind yourself to breath, let go and relax.

7. KEEP YOUR VIBRATION HIGH.

According to the law of attraction, you attract what you are sending out. To attract more of what you want, you have to raise your vibration.

Vibrations are like little radio signals you are continuously sending out to the universe. You must tune your signal to

a vibration worthy of receiving it - stay positive and thankful.

Spend 10-15 minutes a day doing something that makes you feel good. It can be anything from dancing to walking in your favourite place.

Staying positive is the easiest way to be certain good things are coming.

8.

DANCE TO LIFT YOUR VIBRATION.

Dance is very rewarding and can lift your vibrations. Try these steps to lift your vibrations:

• Step forward right foot. Lift your arms to the sky.

• Step right foot back, draw positive vibrations into your heart as you open your arms to open your heart and close across your heart.

• Step right foot forward, gently remove any low vibrations. Repeat 3 times and change direction.

• Choose a tune with a 4x4 rhythm to encompass mind, body and sound.

Hay Fever REMEDIES

HOMEOPATHY AND HAY FEVER GO TOGETHER LIKE ICE CREAM AND SWIMMING ON A SUMMERS DAY. THE TEAM AT HARBORD HOMEOPATHIC CLINIC HAVE A GOOD HANDFUL OF NATURAL REMEDIES THAT COULD ASSIST YOU THROUGH THIS SNEEZY AND EYEWATERING SEASON.

ALLIUM CEPA: If you have a similar irritating experienced to when peeling onions; burning sensations in your nose and eyes; watery discharge; eyes red, irritated and sensitive to light.

ARSENICUM ALBUM: Interestingly affects the right side more than the left, with blocked nose alternating with watery discharge and frequent sneezing; eyes are sore with burning and swelling, relieved by a warm eye wash/compress; worse at night, especially when lying down, outdoors and cold; better for being indoors and warm.

In recent years, high quality double blind trials have backed up the evidence that homeopathy seems to be very effective for hay fever type reactions to pollen. You might have a stuffy and/or runny nose, sneezing, and watery, itchy eyes. It’s not caused by a virus. People who suffer from hay fever hardly need a description of it because living with it can be just miserable and really interfere with their daily life.

These remedies highlight the diverse reactions to pollen in Spring and Summer. For an acute situation, it’s really helpful to have these homeopathic remedies available and to choose them according to the symptoms.

EUPHRASIA: For swollen, watery eyes – must constantly wipe or rub; thick eye discharge; gummy, sore, gritty eyes, feeling worse in bright sunlight and at night time, but also irritable indoors. Feeling better in the cool open air.

NUX VOMICA: Can be used to ease blocked nostrils, intense itching of ears, nose and eyes; you might have an ineffectual urge to sneeze; with a rough and dry throat. Symptoms are worse in the morning, for coffee, alcohol, and strong smells.

SABADILLA: often used when you are surrounded by a lot of flowers in bloom; stubborn sneezing, thin watery mucus, blocked, itchy nose; watery eyes, feeling worse in the cold open-air and sunlight. Feeling better with warm food and drinks. •

Harbord Homeopathic Clinic is a family focused practice with a common sense grounded approach with a wealth of experience. GO DOWN TO KOKOMO

We’re one hospo, one corporate, one tradie – three mates…

We are three not-so young Sydney born blokes – Sam, Adam and Bernard or ‘Marshy’, ‘Bails’ and ‘Skip’.

Together we had a crack at turning the historic old Polar Bar site in Freshwater into a local hub – a place where you and yours can get an excellent coffee, quality brekkie or brunch and staples for the family – and give back to the local community at the same time. So… that’s all travelling smoothly (touch wood), and we’re just stoked at the response from the Freshie locals.

But – do we stop there? Yeah nah... Why have just one great local café spot when you could have two – right? So… taking a leaf out of the Aussie blueprint to ‘have a punt’ or ‘ave a go

ya mug’ – here we are again. This time in beautiful beachside Mona Vale.

While our two places are cut from the same cloth – read best quality coffee, food, service and awesome spacewe’re not after a cookie cutter job. The locations are different, the size is different, the atmosphere will be a little different – but expect the same quality space and product.

We want to be that place in Mona where you come and hang out with your family, your friends, your best mate or even your long-lost cousin… Come sit, have a coffee, a delicious sambo, the best scrambled eggs in the world (seriously but) – and chew the fat.

We’ll also have a small but great range of take-away items from bread, milk and loo paper to hand-crafted

gifts from locals and brands – as well as a selection of classic vinyls.

We love local and will use locally sourced, sustainable produce wherever we can. We also support local artisans, artists and craftspeople.

We’ve also committed to donating 5 cents of every coffee sold to the Mona Vale Boardriders Club as our way of directly giving back to the community.

Why Kokomo? Because we’d love our place to really capture that unique, harmonious, laid-back, sun-filled, saltyaired feeling you get when you listen to that old 80s song. A mythical place you get to fast and then take it slow. That’s where we want to go – way down in Kokomo.

We’re opening this November. See ya soon! •
