NEW HEAD GIRLS

Please welcome the new Head Girl Team for this year!

SIXTH FORM NEWS

On Monday morning, during whole school assembly, the 2023/24 Head Girl applicants presented their speeches, followed by the whole school vote! Well done to all the girls who applied for the roles!

The Year 13 A-level Art students joined the Year 11 GCSE artists on Tuesday, to travel to the Horniman Museum. Everyone had a wonderful time, collecting first hand observational sources to add to their sketchbooks. The Horniman had a big world gallery, that included artefacts from different cultures. There was also a room that held a few skeletons, fossils and animals from all around the world on display. My favourite area was the music room, which held over 1,300 instruments, including a wall of flutes, in addition to more unusual instruments, such as a lute. Much enjoyment was to be had throughout the day!

As it is Youth Mental Health Week this week, during form time on Wednesday we made bracelets, and each received a chocolate heart! Well done to Klara (Senior Pastoral Prefect) for organising this activity alongside the Mental Health Ambassadors, Julia and Aleisha. In addition to this, before lessons on Thursday, the ambassadors delivered an assembly about Youth Mental Health Week and also organised a fun activity in the Reading Room where we anonymously wrote a kind message to someone in the Sixth Form that was delivered to each student as a surprise on Friday.

On Friday morning we had a whole school assembly where Dr McShane announced the new 2023/2024 Student Leadership Team. Well done to everyone on earning their positions!

Olivia, Pippa and I are now handing over to the next Head Girl Team and we wish them the best in their new roles! I have really enjoyed updating everyone on the Sixth Form life each week and I hope that you have enjoyed having an insight into Sixth Form fun.

One of the members from the new Head Girl Team will take over the Sixth Form section of the bulletin from me every week to make sure that you are all updated with the Sixth Form News.

I hope you all have a wonderful half term holiday and thank you for reading the Sixth Form section of the bulletin for the last year, I have really enjoyed sharing all of our news.

Emma W (Deputy Head Girl) R, Art Captain)

BOARDING NEWS

On Friday evening, the Year 10 Boarders went on a trip to Starbucks as an opportunity to interact and get to know each other more while enjoying some delicious drinks. Girls had a lovely time and appreciated leaving site for a moment!

Over the weekend our boarders had a fun day out in Covent Garden in London, where they were able to walk around the stands and have nice food; they also did some shopping and bought really interesting stuff! The girls really enjoyed the trip and wanted to go again some time later!

During Mental Health Week, we reminded our boarders of how important it is to reach out for help every time we need it and how positive it is to speak up when a situation gets overwhelming or difficult to deal with. To involve them in all of this we planned some interactive activities for them to enjoy with their friends, such as heart -shaped cookie baking and a treasure hunt called "on a hunt for the things I love" in which the girls had to share objects that make them happy. Lots of smiles and fun!

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

As part of Mental Health Week, the pupils have been participating in a variety of activities around the school.

Some of the activities the pupils were able to take part in included; Year 11 received a talk on well being during the exam season, all pupils were also able to receive a “Hug in a Mug” hot chocolate during their break! Later in the week during form time the pupils learnt about the importance of focusing on the moment, in an activity where they created friendship bracelets. The Mental Wellbeing Ambassadors were joined by students from Cranmore for a mini medic talk. Parents were also able to attend a talk from David Leech, an expert in mental health, to learn about wellbeing, including what being happy or worried feels like and how to be more positive in the face of adversity.

What a fun week it has been!

FRENCH BREAKFAST

Cranmore hosted a French breakfast for the pupils across the Trust to practice their French, with a little help from some of our Senior students to help keep the flow of conversation going.

ARTWORK

Isabelle T in Year 9 loves fashion and illustration and has been kind enough to share some of the design work she has been doing independently at home!

HISTORY TALK

On Wednesday, Year 7 spent the afternoon listening to a guest speaker from Windsor Castle. The focus of the talk was 'What happened after 1066'. They discovered more about the aftermath of the Battle of Hastings, particularly the introduction of the Feudal System by William the Conqueror - some of the girls even got to dress up as the King, Nobles, Knights and Peasants! Building on their knowledge of the Medieval period, the speaker also explained how Windsor Castle developed from a traditional Motte and Bailey Castle to a stone fortress that is very difficult to attack. The presentation finished with an explanation of what Windsor Castle is used for today and the girls learnt more about the role of the King in today's society

NIGHT AT THE OPERA

On Tuesday we held our “A Night at the Opera” concert.

YEAR 9 NOUGHTS AND CROSSES

Year 9 enjoyed seeing Malorie Blackman's "Noughts and Crosses" brought to life on the stage at the Rose Theatre in Kingston last week. The play tells the story of a segregated society and the struggle facing Sephy and Callum as their love is forbidden in a divided world.

YEAR 11 POETRY LIVE

The English department took all of Year 11 to see Poetry Live in London. This was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to hear many of the poems on the GCSE syllabus read by the poets themselves. We enjoyed listening to Carol Ann Duffy, Imtiaz Dharker, John Agard and Simon Armitage and hearing what they had to say about their poems. There was also a very special moment for Emma N when she was invited to pose a question to Carol Ann Duffy. The chief examiner was also present, and he delivered two sessions exploring how to tackle the poetry questions and shared some exemplar answers.

ROTARY

DEBATING SOCIETY

Two wonderful teams from Year 8 took part in the Rotary Club Public Speaking Competition held in Mairlot Hall last week. Pascale W, Eleanor G and Gabriella G spoke about the importance of extra-curricular activities. Amelia B, Georgina W and Sophie M debated the importance of British Sign Language. Congratulations to the winning team of Amelia B, Georgina W and Sophie M who fought off stiff competition from Manor House and Cranmore. They now go forward to the area semi-final.

ECO REQUEST!!!!!

The green fingered students have started introducing indoor plants into the Form Rooms across the school in an Eco boosting initiative. In the spirit of the Eco Club the plants have either been re-homed or have been propagated, but we are still a few short so if you happen to have any that you would like to donate we would appreciate it.

In the same spirit of re-using we are also looking for any saucers or medium sized plant pots

Thank you from the Eco Council

ONE OCEAN

We have extra spaces available to attend the One Ocean workshops, you do not need to be an eco team member. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

If you have an interest in marine biology, conservation and microplastics this may be worthwhile; you can also add this to your UCAS application.

There will be a trip in the Summer Term to Brighton, so if you sign up and attend the talks you will automatically receive an invite.

There will be a further three workshops after half term on the 23rd of February and the 2nd and 9th of March at 13:30 in Room 35.

NOTICES

YEAR 7 RESIDENTIAL

We are delighted to confirm that there will be a residential trip for Year 7 from Thursday 18th May to Friday 19th May at 4th Dimension Outdoor Activities Centre, East Grinstead. The trip will provide pupils with the opportunity to explore exciting new experiences, learn new skills and discover more about themselves and those around them.

The trip will depart on Thursday 18th May. Pupils will travel by coach and arrive at 4th Dimension by 08:00. The site covers 125 acres of field and woodland on the edge of the Ashdown Forest. In the Spring, the woods are blanketed in bluebells. The company has been running residential adventure courses throughout the UK and abroard since 1976, and courses in East Grinstead since 1980. They have an unrivalled knowledge of the location. Pupils will be staying at 4th Dimension overnight before returning to school by 16:15 on Friday 19th May. Exact times are to be confirmed.

If you would like to reserve a provisional place on the trip then please return the permission slip included in the email sent out earlier this week and make a non-refundable deposit payment of £11 to the school to enable us to secure the trip.

WORLD BOOK DAY TOKEN

This year there will no longer be a paper £1.00 book voucher for Secondary School children, instead the voucher is online and can be downloaded from: worldbookday.com/ secondary-digital-token/

St Teresa's has been registered to be part of this exciting new initiative.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY TRIP

The Geography Department has organised a compulsory residential trip to Dorset for Year 10. We will depart from St Teresa’s at 08:45 on Wednesday 26th April 2023 and will return by 15:45 on Friday 28th April 2023. We will travel down to Dorset with Harding’s Coaches, and will stay full board for two nights at the PGL Centre at Osmington Bay, Dorset. A consent form has been sent out to give permission for your daughter to participate.

GCSE ENGLISH TRIP

The English Department has arranged for Quantum Theatre to come into school on the morning of Wednesday 8th March, to perform ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’. The performance will begin at 8:50am and lasts an hour. This will be an excellent opportunity for all pupils to revise and consolidate their understanding of this GCSE text. The cost of the performance is being subsidised by the English Department; tickets will be £5 each and will be added to your end of term account.

This Week

This week we marked Mental Health Awareness Week. In Chapel we took as our starting point the encounter between Jesus and the woman at the well (John 4). Jesus, as he travels from Galilee to Judaea passes through the Samaritan territory. He pauses at Jacob’s well in the heat of the day and has an encounter with a Samaritan woman. It is easy to miss the significance of this time of day. No one would go out to draw water from a well in the heat of the day. Groups of women would gather early in the morning when it was still cool. Instead, we see a lone woman who is clearly an outcast. Indeed, later in the conversation we find out the reason. She has lived a sinful life and has now been outcast from her community. Along with the heavy physical load of the water, she must also bear the even heavier load of the mental and spiritual anguish. And into that anguish steps Jesus.

Jesus is never hesitant to enter the hostile territory of our lives. Whatever we have done, and however troubled we are, Jesus is always there, waiting for that moment of encounter. We just need to raise our eyes, and he will be there.

And his words are always words of welcoming acceptance. Jesus sees through the woman’s hesitant attempts to hid the truth. Instead, he offers words of gentleness, kindness and compassion. Whatever we have done, and whatever we feel about ourselves, Jesus speaks words of love to us.

Finally, Jesus offers a gift. He rejects those things that we choose as the ‘quick fixes’ - the stagnant still waters that only momentarily quench a far deeper thirst. Instead, he offers living water, an overflowing abundance, welling up within us as he washes away our sin and shame and replaces it with the promise of his faithful presence in our lives.

It has been lovely at Equestrian this week, it’s been a bit chilly but the sun was shining and it is a joy to work and ride in!

If you don’t have any plans over the February Half Term, then do come and join us for a private lesson or on one of our Pony Mornings or Afternoons!

Please make sure your child comes with enough layers to ride in! We only have a few raincoats on hand and they are limited in sizes. In the bitter weather a good coat and gloves make all the difference when you are on a horse!

There has been really lovely weather this week, it’s been a bit cold but the sun is shining! Some of the ponies had new shoes fitted, and Mouse and Roxy had a physio treatment and feel a lot better now! The arena has been set up into a 20x40m and a 15x30m dressage arena with markers, which the horses, riders and instructors are liking.

The horse of the week is… Barney!

Another busy weekend of competitions for lots of our NSEA riders across three different disciplines!

On Saturday Claudia B had a great round at Pyecombe Arena Eventing for 3rd place in the 80cm. Meanwhile at Merrist Wood Show Jumping, Pernille A continues her run of very good form with a 6th in the 70cm and 5th in the 80cm. Rosie C had a very successful outing to Felbridge with her lovely new pony for a 3rd in the 60cm Show Jumping, Qualifying for the Sunshine Tour Finals and a 3rd in Prelim 7.

Well done everyone - keep up the good work!
