EDITOR Hello Again, Jellies! Welcome back to another edition of “The Sting”! We’ve finally reached February which means this term will soon be coming to an end; let’s make the most of it while we can! While it is only the second month in 2020, we need to continue to be strong with our goals and resolution ⏤ don’t give up. February is a time to spread love of all types, so please be sure to give back and show your community some love this month. In this issue, it heavily goes over DCON. DCON will be taking place in March this year and any information you need about DCON can be found in the upcoming newsletters (division and district). Whether you need to fundraise for DCON, or don’t know how to pack ⏤ I’ve got you covered! Please don’t be hesitate to ask about DCON! As a previous attendee, I would love for every single Jelly to experience DCON at least once in their high school career. Before this term ends I would love to get to know more Jellies and
also hear about the goals you’ve set for yourself. Remember, without a goal we have nothing to strive for. However, if you do set a goal, take note that a plan needs to go along with it ⏤ or else it is just a dream. Hopefully you continue to implement goals for yourself past your Jelly days. While I don’t think I’ve put myself out there enough in Key Club for the duration of this term, I hope to make the most of the remaining term and start the next term off on a good foot! It is never too late to start working towards your goals, Jellies. That’s it from me, Jellies! I hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter. Please let me know what you think via email or Instagram! See you again next month for another edition of “The Sting”!

LT. GOV Happy February! Welcome to the 10th issue of “The Sting”! I hope your first month back from winter break wasn’t too stressful. Although February is the shortest month of the year, it is jam-packed with a LOT of exciting activities so be ready for an eventful 29 days! February also means that we are quickly approaching the end of the term :’) Instead of ending in April, the 2019-2020 term will be ending on March 15th. As a result, you may see many of your clubs hosting club elections and settling final arrangements for District Convention. Because we are reaching the end of the term, there are still many things we need to accomplish as a division. Before the term is over, I push you to direct all your efforts towards helping us reach our division and district goals so we can make this a monumental year! You can find the status of our division goals within the contents of this newsletter
but as a Key Clubber, you (yes, you) play an important role in our organization. I encourage you to run for positions, invite your friends to join Key Club and pay their dues, attend events, and of course, serve the community! Our division would not be the same without you and we need your help now more than ever to end the term strong. With that said, thank you for an amazing ten months thus far. We have grown so much in such a short amount of time and you always never cease to amaze me. I just know that we’re going to accomplish some amazing things this month and I absolutely can’t wait to see what new heights we’ll reach.
Stinging with Service, Jane Pham P.S. If we haven’t meet in person yet, I really hope to meet you at one of our events this month before I become old :’)

DECEMBER DCM
GIVING The month of December filled our hearts by giving to others and to our Division 37 East Jelly Family! At the Division Council meeting, Jellies embraced this feeling in having our own mini donation. Members participated in writing letters to their future selves and the goals they aspire for in the new year. Here’s a Jelly’s take on their experience at the DCM: The December DCM was a great experience. Our service event was making dog toys and donating them to the San Diego Humane Society. We made the dog toys by ripping up t-shirts and tying them together at the ends. Also, the first 25 attendees were able to get a face mask to destress! This was a sure fire way to improve their break after finals. The other event that took place was writing letters to our future selves or to appreciate another person in Key Club. It was a beneficial way to reflect on our goals for the new year or just to show our gratitude in the Jelly Family. Overall, it was just really successful Council Meeting and it especially fun bonding with fellow Jellies. It let everyone destress after finals and welcome in the new year and decade! - Greg Bullock Del Lago Academy Treasurer

dcon 2018-19 term
MY DCON EXPERIENCE Attending District Convention for the 2018/2019 term has been one of my greatest pleasures. I was able to not only interact and meet new people, but also expand my curiosity and interest in Key Club. Upon reaching my hotel, I encountered Key Clubbers by division from around the district. It felt a lot like Fall Rally but a lot more personal. My group consisted of three senior girls I didn’t know, but we became quick friends and still maintain contact today ⏤ so don’t skip out on DCON because you won’t be in a room with your friends! That Friday night, they held a ceremony to welcome us and also run down the itinerary. The food was excellent and they provided a wide range of options. The opening ceremony allowed many Key Clubbers to meet for the first time and interact with each other prior to the next day’s events. The next day on Saturday, my partner and I attended the hall for voting. It was a long process and took the majority of the day. We were introduced to Key Club International
Trustees, current division board members, and lastly the candidates. They all did a spectacular job on their speeches and caucus questions, however the winning votes came down to Chuofan Yu as Governor, Kristie Poon as Treasurer, and Lawrence Guittap as Secretary. Outside of the voting hall, members were able to attend workshops on various topics held by other Key Clubbers. We concluded the night with dinner and another ceremony, and then it was time for the Governor’s Ball! The night was spent extravagantly and everyone from the district could let loose and have fun. The following days it was time to say goodbye to all the friends we had made, but we made sure we would be able to stay in touch. I can’t wait to see them again at our next DCON! - Sofia Nawaz Division News Editor

SAN MARCOS HOLIDAY PARADE In December 2019, San Marcos Key Club attended the San Marcos Holiday Parade. This volunteer event was hosted by the members of Lake San Marcos Kiwanis club. Many members from both San Marcos Key Club and Mission Hill Key Club came out to show their passion for service and strengthen the connection with their sponsor, the Lake San Marcos Kiwanis club. They helped decorate the Kiwanis parade float and trailer with a Christmas themed design and a large Kiwanis banner. The volunteers also sorted through hundreds of children’s books and ensured that the appropriate Kiwanis sticker label was on each book.
Later, the volunteers walked along the parade route alongside the Kiwanis parade float, handing out books to the children on the street. The San Marcos Holiday Parade was a great opportunity for San Marcos Key Clubbers to collaborate with both the Mission Hills club and the Kiwanis club, for a truly local community event. Members note that the day was “filled with joy seeing all of the children receive donated books”. This outreach program is a part of the Kiwanis club’s focus on enriching the educational opportunities of young children. We hope the children enjoy their books and look forward to working with Kiwanis in the future. - Krista Nguyen San Marcos President MEMBERS FROM BOTH SAN MARCOS AND MISSION HILLS HELPING OUT WITH BOOK DISTRIBUTION AND ORGANIZATION

ROSE BOWL PARADE As one of the big service events of every year, Rose Float is by far, one of the most exciting events to attend to. Rose Float decorating is offered every year for Key Clubbers to have the opportunity to not only bond with each other, but make a greater impact on the community. This event consists of flowers, more flowers, and well ⏤ flowers galore! By the name Rose Float, Key Club has the opportunity to help our fellow Kiwanians decorate floats for the one and only Rose Bowl Parade. The parade itself comes a long way, starting in 1890, celebrating the holiday tournament. Knowing this, it is a huge, huge honor to volunteer in
MEMBERS TRIMMED AND PREPPED FLOWERS BEFORE THEY WERE USED TO DECORATE THE FLOAT
decorating these beautiful floats for the popular page, it’s a wonderful feeling to watch the parade with the satisfaction and the pride that this is something we did, something we contributed to. Perhaps a decent 'humblebrag' to add to our resumés. Members would sort out leaves from the flowers and put them on small bed patches to hold the flowers in place for the floats. This would be done in the span of 8 hours at most. In the end, it was a team effort with both the Kiwanis and Key Club to put together the flower-covered floats for the huge event. - Jennifer Manimtim Del Lago Historian

WORKING WITH D37E WHEN DID YOU WORK WITH D37E? There has been a lot events since our divisions are so close. We typically do joint DCMs — such as the April, July, August, November, and January DCM. However, we have also done a OTC, RTC, and CTC in conjunction with Jellies. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH D37E? Due to our history of joint events, most of the two divisions know each other fairly well. Everyone is cooperative and we don’t really run into any problems. Jane and I don’t struggle to get the two divisions to interact or work together — it’s primarily smooth sailing! And of course, Jane is amazing and kills being Lt. Governor. HOW HAS WORKING AMONG DIFFERING DIVISIONS IMPROVE YOUR KEY CLUB EXPERIENCE? I feel like I’ve met a lot of different people, some to which I didn’t even like that much, but working with other divisions has taught me how to get along with people who might be very different from me. It’s taught me how to learn in our diverse society! I also wouldn’t have met Jane or any other LTG if I didn’t attend events with different divisions. The entire region is definitely a lot more connected thanks to these joint events. - ANTONY LIN DIVISION 37 WEST LTG

EVELYN RAMIREZ SOPHOMORE MISSION HILLS JOINED SOPHOMORE YR WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO JOIN KEY CLUB? I saw the Key Club booth during Club Rush my freshman year and was really intrigued since I had never heard of it before. Later on I found out it was a community service club which I thought was very cool. I primarily joined to get more involved with my school and community by helping and giving back others who needed it. I also joined to meet new people and make new friends, which besides of doing community service, is of the things that I enjoy the most! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF KEY CLUB? My favorite aspect of Key Club is just connecting with other people and finding things we have in common through helping the community! Everyone in Key Club is exceptionally warm and welcoming. HOW HAVE YOU GROWN BECAUSE OF KEY CLUB? It has helped realize how important it is to help others and give back to those who need it the most. It also has given me much more leadership skills, which have brought me out of my comfort zone more than before. I’ve learned to do things that I usually wouldn’t do (in a good way!). It also motivates me to do better and always be the best version of myself! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE FROM KEY CLUB? I think my favorite Key Club experience is when we went to Fall Rally South last November, since it was my first time going, I met a lot of new people and made new friends whom I love so much! The Rally Session and its energy was so fun and exciting, too. I just truly enjoyed every single thing about it.

DANIEL JIANG JUNIOR SAN MARCOS JOINED FRESHMAN YR WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO JOIN KEY CLUB? During my freshman year, a lot of my friends signed up for Key Club and I joined with them. I also saw a lot of upperclassmen posting about Key Club which intrigued the majority of freshmen to see what Key Club was all about. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF KEY CLUB? My favorite aspect of Key Club is meeting people who share the same passion of helping the community. At service events and meetings, I usually meet incredibly interesting people and I end up having a lot in common with them. This has led me to make plenty of friends through Key Club due to the initial commonality of loving to give back. HOW HAVE YOU GROWN BECAUSE OF KEY CLUB? I have grown for the better thanks to Key Club. Not only have my social skills developed tremendously due to leadership roles, but I’ve fostered a sense of enjoyment in giving back to my community. The feeling of fulfilment when participating in service events is a wonderful feeling that I will carry with me past my high school years. I would have never believed that community service is fun and enjoyable if I wasn’t in Key Club. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE FROM KEY CLUB? I think my favorite Key Club experience is running a booth at the Horse Heritage Festival. This is usually a joint event with Mission Hills, a school which I am much acquainted with. My best friends and I got to run a pumpkin decorating booth, which we get to help children with painting and accessorizing pumpkins — as well as making our own!

JENNIFER LE SENIOR ORANGE GLEN JOINED FRESHMAN YR WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO JOIN KEY CLUB? I heard about Key Club in eighth grade from a member who talked about how Key Club gives the opportunity for teenagers to make a difference (through cleanups, senior center activities, etc). That really intrigued me because I knew I wanted to give back to my community and I believed Key Club would help me achieve that goal. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF KEY CLUB? My favorite aspect of Key Club would have to be that there’s no limit to how much service and good you can bring into the community, or even world. Key Club is a community where many different groups of teenagers can come together and be able to create a positive impact little by little. You never have to even worry about doing too much for the community. There will always be many new opportunities to spread joy and leave a lasting impact everywhere when Key Club is involved. HOW HAVE YOU GROWN BECAUSE OF KEY CLUB? I really mean it when I say that I wouldn’t be where I am now or be the person that I am now if I had not joined Key Club. Before my freshman year, I was shy and didn’t know what Key Club had in store for me, but fast forward to senior year and ’ve had the honor to serve one of the best clubs and divisions ever. Key Club shaped me to be someone who understands others, grows from others, and tries to step out of their comfort zone. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE FROM KEY CLUB? I can’t pick one Key Club moment because everything has been so memorable. Although, I especially cherish events that involve our Kiwanis!
