Atividade

Jacqueline Woodson: There will be times when you walk into a room and no one there is quite like you. Maybe it will be your skin, your clothes, or the curl of your hair. There will be times when no one understands the way words pour from your mouth, or the beautiful language of the country you left behind. “My name is Rigoberto. We just moved here from Venezuela”. And because they don’t understand, the classroom will fill with laughter until the teacher quiets everyone down. “Rigoberto. From Venezuela”, your teacher says so soft and beautifully that your name and homeland sound like flowers blooming the first bright notes of a song. […]

Host: So the question for today, families, is: what is your family tree? It can all be so confusing… We have uncles, and aunts, and brothers, and sisters… Why don’t we take some time today to figure it out? We can help you do this with the template in the show notes. Go ahead and download that and have all kinds of fun conversations about your family tree. And to start this conversation, mom and dad, why don’t you talk about your family tree and all that you remember and kind of what has brought your generations together or apart? What’s an aunt and uncle even mean and who are aunts and uncles, who are cousins, and just talk through your family tree. Hey, dad, can you talk about what has kind of bridged our generations and what you found out through all the tests you’ve run and stuff?

Father: Well, you know, one thing that’s really been kind of fun is that we passed down middle names. Like, your middle name is Richard, my middle name is Richard, my dad’s middle name is Richard, and his dad’s middle name is Richard. So, two hundred and five

Time to listen do volume.

that connected the generations for us. Host: Yeah, it’s super fun! And Merrick’s middle name is Richard too. So, that’s super cool!

Host: We’re going to learn about something called architecture. If I were to ask anyone of my crew to define architecture... Yeah, Eli, come right up to a mic. Well, how would you define architecture?

Eli: Architecture is basically planning, planning out the structure of buildings.

Host: The structure of the... anybody else?

Thoughts on architecture? I sometimes think of architecture as different styles of buildings, like it is both the process of planning, like you said, Eli, and also, I think it refers to the style of buildings. And if you look around in this building, right now, describe it for me, Maya or Zen, somebody over there, describe it for me. What are you seeing in this building?

Zen: Well, we’re in a little room, which has some windows over in front of us.

Host: That’s a building.

Zen: Yeah, that’s a building... and the windows are really pretty. And then over to the side of the windows there is a really red bookshelf which has many shelves and it’s a very large bookshelf, and it spans the whole entire wall, and it has many old books, which is very cool.

Host: It is a, it is a library.

Zen: It is a library. I mean, come on. And then to the side of that, there’s like a little oven place, which is not an oven, because it’s a fireplace.

Caydan: Nutrition, fruits and vegetables, calories, fat... why is all of this SUCH a big deal?

Karmen: We all want to be strong, have energy, and look and feel our best, but how do we know what to eat?

Kaya: We need food and drinks to fuel our bodies. What kind and how much will affect how we look and feel. With the most nutritious fuel, we’re ready for anything.

Chris: Right, Kaya! Just like cars need gas to run, our bodies need food to keep it going, but not just any food.

Karmen: Eating a healthy diet means giving your body the type and amount of food and drinks that help you look and feel your best. When you give your body what it needs, like vitamins, minerals, and proteins, it gives you a lot in return, like energy, powerful muscles, and strong bones.

Eva: This is not how any of us should be starting our day. So my challenge to you is to not pick up your phone the moment you wake up. Instead, wake up, jump out of bed, and set your intention for a great day ahead. And that could be with some exercise, or meditation, or some fresh air – as long as your time is spent doing something that will be beneficial and get your day started right. That’s all I’m suggesting: whatever you do, do not pick up your device when you first wake up and start scrolling through content of other people, because it’s not going to empower you to have an amazing day ahead. Today’s episode is short, but it’s a point that you can see I am very passionate about and wanted to drive this point home with an episode just on this topic. It’s your day to shine. So own your day by claiming the first 30 minutes for yourself. That’s all for today. This is Eva Karpman, reminding you that you

Harry: My name is Harry and I am 10 years old. And my question is, what is an indigenous educator?

Cassie Leatham: An indigenous educator. We go into schools and early children’s centers and we basically facilitate workshops surrounding our culture. So it’s about learning and respecting our environment, animals, learning about bush foods, language and, how, like, the past and present and what we can expect for the future with reconciliation. So there’s lots of things that we like to cover as an indigenous educator. So we can, you know, move forward as one and everyone gets an understanding of our people.
