Punta Cana se ha convertido en una marca país, la más reconocida en el mundo. Su historia inicia en 1969, cuando un grupo de inversionistas estadounidenses encabezado por Ted Kheel y el empresario dominicano Frank R. Rainieri se unieron para crear una comunidad turística que respetara el hábitat natural, y que proporcionara a los visitantes una experiencia vacacional de clase mundial. Luego de ocho años, Kheel y Rainieri logran la autorización de la construcción del primer aeropuerto internacional privado del mundo, que inicia sus operaciones el 17 de diciembre de 1983. Para su primer año recibió un total de 2,976 pasajeros. Treinta y tres años más tarde, es el aeropuerto más transitado del país, recibiendo el 66.63% de los viajeros que visita el país, y con conexiones directas a más de 98 ciudades de Estados Unidos, Canadá, Latinoamérica, Europa, Asia y el Caribe, a través de unas 60 aerolíneas. En mayo del 2015 obtuvo la pre calificación para operar vuelos de Estados Unidos como si fuera una terminal doméstica, permitiendo a los pasajeros que sean pre chequeados antes de viajar a Norteamérica.

Punta Cana has become a country brand, the most recognized in the world. Its history began in 1969 when a group of investors from The United States, spearheaded by Ted Kheel and Dominican businessman Frank R. Rainieri got together to form a tourist community dedicated to respecting the natural habitat while giving visitors a world class vacational experience After eight years Kheel and Rainieri secured the authorization for the construction of the world’s first private international airport. The airport initiates operations on the 17 of december, 1983. During the first year it received a total of 2,976 passengers. Thirty three years later it is the busiest airport of the country, receiving 66.63% of the visitors to the Dominican Republic with direct connections to over 98 cities in the United States and Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean and serviced by some 60 airlines. On May of 2015 it obained the prequalification to operate flights from the United States as if it were a home terminal allowing passengers to precheck in before boarding for North America.
