‘Truth and Justice’ shortlisted for best international feature Oscar ERR News, December 2019 Based on the novel of the same name by Anton Hansen Tammsaare, Estonian movie “Truth and Justice” has been shortlisted for the Inter national Feature Film cate gory at the 92nd Academy Awards, ERR’s Menu portal reports. The movie was released early this year and took around 18 months to film, with a budget of €2.5 million. Filming locations (see gal lery above) included construct ing a set of several 19th-century style Estonian houses, in the village of Vastse-Roosa on the border with Latvia, as well as several other sites, including the Open Air Museum (Eesti Vaba

õhumuuseum) in Tallinn, and actors’ clothes were aged in line with the time lapse of the story (over 20 years). “Truth and Justice” had its cinematic release earlier this year and will premiere on ETV on January 1, 2020. The final shortlist of Oscar foreign-language nominees will be made in early 2020. Previous Estonian movies to have been nominated for Oscar selection include EstonianGeorgian co-production “Tan gerines” (2014), which made it to the top five for the 2015 Oscars, and “The Fencer” (2015), which was shortlisted the following year. Tammsaare’s “Truth and Justice” pentalogy was pub lished from 1926-1933.

It’s a beautiful annual tradition – singing for grandparents or even great-grandparents at Ehatare. Estonian Brownies and Cub Scouts know how appreciative the seniors at Ehatare are seeing and hearing the youngest generation carolling for them in their heritage language. Photo: Erika Agur

Journalist: Estonian reaction to Helme words stronger than in Finland ERR, December 2019 Reaction to interior minister Mart Helme’s comments about the new Finnish prime minister, Sanna Marin, was stronger in Estonia than in Finland, according to Posti mees special correspondent Patrik Hytönen. Speaking on ETV current affairs show Ringvaade, Hytö nen said that: “Finland as a society is very ahead of us, and people criticize Marin’s politi cal views rather than what her life has been like,” the journal ist added. While people in Finland have been critical of Helme’s words, Hytönen believes that in the long run Helme’s words will not affect Estonian-Finnish rela tions. “Something bad is unlikely to happen to Estonian-Finnish relations,” he noted, adding that the ambassadors of both coun tries have also confirmed that the status quo in relations will be maintained. The apologies from Estonia, which came from both the head of state Kersti Kaljulaid, and the head of the government Jüri Ratas, as well as, in a fashion, from Helme himself, have been viewed positively in Finland, Hytönen added.

Monthly, the “Friends of Estonian House”, offer a fund-raising “Afternoon Fun” lunch to gather support for a fund that can be used for repairs, improvements etc, to the Estonian community home on Broadview Avenue. This December the participants were caught up as usual by the Christmas spirit as expressed in the singing of carols and the belief that Santa really does exist. Proof? That’s not Little Red Riding Hood in the photo. It’s Jõuluvana himself! Photos: Vaado Sarapuu

“It is still positive that the president and others have shown that they want to maintain a good partnership. Even more, there is this plus point that Mart Helme has apologized to others,” he said.
