WELCOME Thank you for taking an interest in our college. Finding the right college and right course after leaving school is an important decision. Redcar & Cleveland College offers a wide range of vocational courses and apprenticeships which are aimed at providing you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to progress into employment, higher education or an apprenticeship. This is an exciting time for the borough of Redcar and Cleveland and we are extremely proud to serve our local communities. GUISBOROUGH FOREST – With a number of different walks and trim trails, Guisborough Forest provides the ideal opportunity to explore our local woodlands.

Situated next to the College, Locke Park is home to a boating lake, tennis courts and luscious gardens to explore.

FESTIVAL OF THRIFT –

Kirkleatham is home to the Festival of Thrift, an annual outdoor festival which promotes sustainable living through upcycling and recycling. You will also find great music, entertainment and food at the festival.

ENJOY A LEMON TOP IN REDCAR - Redcar is

famous for its lemon top, an ice cream cone topped with a swirl of lemon sorbet. There are a number of places on Redcar seafront where you can try the local delicacy for yourself!

Alongside your course you will take part in regular tutorials. We want you to not only successfully complete your qualification but also to develop the skills to make informed choices and become a well-rounded citizen. Tutorials are also a chance to catch up with your tutor, keep track of your progress and plan your next steps.

Whatever you want to do in the future, English and maths matter. Our Figure It Out Festival encourages students to develop their skills by taking part in a series of fun activities and workshops. It all adds to your success!

ALRIGHT RCC

Our action-packed event, Alright RCC, is an event which promotes positive mental health and wellbeing, Be Kind to your Mind. The event promotes positive mental health and tackles the stigma around poor mental health. You will be given the opportunity to take part in practical workshops, promoting relaxation, mindfulness and opening conversations about how you are feeling. Looking after your mind is as important as looking after your body.

Getting hands-on experience in the world of work is a priority at Redcar & Cleveland College. This can include placements, volunteering, work experience in College and/or community projects. By working closely with employers, we ensure our courses deliver the skills that count.

STUDENT ASSOCIATION

We have many amazing ways in which you can play an active role in college life. If you would like to have your say and represent your fellow students, then why not get involved in our Student Association? The Association works alongside Student Services, helping out at events, promoting activities and engaging others in enrichment activities including clubs and societies. We are also keen for students to set up student societies. Whatever your interest or hobby, if you want to put on activities or just meet like-minded individuals, get started and we’ll help you along the way.

CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOPS

Students studying a trade such as carpentry and joinery, bricklaying, electrical, plumbing or plastering will enjoy hands-on learning in our construction workshops. With trade specific workshops and industry standard equipment you will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of your chosen trade.

DIGITAL SUITES

Our digital suites are used for our Computing, IT and Creative Media courses and are equipped with the latest equipment. You will use industry standard software to develop your digital skills.

ENGINEERING ZONE

If you are looking to pursue a career in the engineering industry then our Engineering Zone is the place to learn your skills, knowledge and behaviours to become career ready. The Engineering Zone features fully equipped workshops for chemical, mechanical, electrical and advanced manufacturing as well as a CAD training suite. All of our workshops are equipped with modern and specialist industry standard equipment.

HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE TRAINING WARD

There is no better place to develop your health and social care knowledge, skills and behaviours than in our state-of-the-art Health & Social Care Training Ward which is equipped with a four-bed mock hospital ward, training ambulance, doctor’s surgery, sluice room and a domiciliary home care area.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE

Our Learning Resource Centre (LRC) at Redcar & Cleveland College provides access to books, journals, computers, iPads and other learning resources. The LRC strives to be innovative and inclusive in meeting the needs and demands of all our learners. We provide an extensive range of learning materials to support you in your studies in an environment that is safe, welcoming, stimulating and engaging.

MOCK AIRCRAFT

Prepare yourself for a future career in aviation by learning in our industry standard mock aircraft. Providing students with the opportunity to practise various scenarios that they could encounter on board. Students also learn how to check-in baggage and make departure announcements.

MOSAIC HAIR & BEAUTY SALON

Mosaic offers a range of hairdressing and beauty therapy services available to both students and the general public at great prices. As a student you will gain the industry experience of working in a salon with clients. Providing everything from cuts to colouring, highlights, facials, hair removal, manicures and massages, all of our students are fully supervised throughout the service.*

SPORTS CENTRE

Our Sports Centre has recently been upgraded to provide outstanding facilities for our students and the general public. All of our full-time students receive free gym membership. Facilities within our Sports Centre include: • A four-court sports hall • A gym with a full range of fitness equipment • Functional training rooms • Changing facilities • Assault course • A 3G flood-lit astro pitch (coming soon)

THE WAVE CAFÉ

If you are looking for a bite to eat on campus, then our Wave Café is the place to go. Serving everything from hot meals through to light bites such as paninis and sandwiches. You can also get hot and cold drinks, snacks and breakfast from the Café.

ENTRY LEVEL Entry level courses offer a basic understanding of a subject area, help you to enhance your career prospects and improve your English and maths skills. You do not require any formal qualifications for these courses but will be required to attend an interview with a course tutor.*

LEVEL 1 Level 1 courses are practical and prepare you with skills for a specific career. You will gain a wide range of background knowledge in your chosen subject. If you have not achieved a GCSE grade C/4 in English or maths you will study for these qualifications alongside your course. You will typically require 4 GCSEs grade E/2 or an entry level qualification in a related course to enrol on to a level 1 course.*

LEVEL 2 Level 2 courses provide you with the skills you need for a specific career. You will start to specialise in the areas you find interesting, but are still broad enough to give you a wide range of progression opportunities if you are not sure what you would like to do in the future. You will typically require 4 GCSEs grade D/3 or a level 1 qualification in a related course to enrol on to a level 2 course.*

LEVEL 3 Level 3 courses offer you specialised and advanced learning which give you the skills and knowledge to progress directly into employment or university level courses on completion. These courses will also include a work experience placement to prepare you for employment. You will typically require 4 GCSEs grade C/4 or a level 2 qualification in a related course to enrol on to a level 3 course.* Courses with a high practical content may require you to start at level 1 or 2 as you will need to build skills on these courses.

PAYING FOR YOUR COURSE FEES

If you are under the age of 19 at the start of your course there should be no fees to pay. If you are aged 19 or above speak to our Admissions Team about fees, repayment and student loan *opportunities. Entry requirements may vary. LEARNING SUPPORT Redcar & Cleveland College’s Learning Support Team are dedicated to making sure our learners receive the support they need. We can arrange a support interview and make sure the appropriate support is put in place. Our aim is to make sure our learners are respected and cared for as individuals and are encouraged and supported to reach their potential at all times. Learning support services include support for students who are visually impaired, have a hearing impairment, those with mobility issues, dyslexia, autism or any learning or physical difficulty and/or disability.

SPECIALIST EQUIPMENT

We have a range of specialist equipment available for learners including specialist software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking, Read and Write Gold. Students can also be provided with dictaphones, magnifiers and specialist keyboards and laptops.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND DISABILITIES (SEND)/EDUCATION HEALTH AND CARE PLAN (EHCP)

At Redcar & Cleveland College we are committed to supporting you to meet your individual goals and aspirations. We welcome applications from students with special education needs, learning disabilities/difficulties and/or other support needs. We will work with you to provide you with the right resources, support and services to meet your needs. To ensure we can provide the best support we will ask to see a copy of your Education and Health Care Plan or SEN (Special Educational Needs) Support Plan. This will allow us to understand your support needs and provide appropriate support. We will work with you, your family, your current provider and any other professionals involved, to put in place a transition plan to help you settle into and adjust to college life. We work closely with the local authorities to adhere to the special educational needs and disabilities code of practice (SEND CoP) to meet the needs of our students. Support will include access to our dedicated Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) room.

TRANSITION INTO COLLEGE LIFE

We can arrange taster sessions so you can experience a course session of your choice and decide if it is right for you. We can also provide support during your college interview. Transition sessions can be arranged to meet the course tutors, learning support staff and allow you to familiarise yourself with the building.

BEAUTY THERAPY Whether you want to work in a high street salon, run your own beauty business or travel the world offering treatments on a cruise ship, a career in beauty therapy can get you there. Our beauty therapy courses will give you the knowledge and behaviours you need to get started, deliver great service and master the latest techniques.

LEVEL 1 CERTIFICATE IN HAIR AND BEAUTY

LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA IN BEAUTY THERAPY

Course length: 1 year

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Our level 1 course will provide you with introductory skills in hair and beauty and covers topics such as shampooing and conditioning hair, blow drying and plaiting hair along with basic makeup application, hand and nail care and nail art.

2 GCSEs grade 3/D or above including English and maths or an entry level qualification in a related course.

WHAT’S NEXT?

You could progress on to one our Level 2 courses in hairdressing, hair and media makeup or beauty therapy or look to secure an apprenticeship.

This course will combine both practical and theory sessions to develop skills, knowledge and behaviours in client care, providing facials, eyelash and eyebrow treatments, waxing, manicure and pedicure treatments, nail art and salon reception duties. You will undertake practical sessions within our excellent training salons, as well as providing treatments to customers in our industry standard salon, Mosaic.

4 GCSEs grade 3/D or above or a level 1 qualification in a related course.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Develop your skills further by completing our Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy or secure an apprenticeship.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This course will build upon existing skills developed at level 2, and you will learn new techniques such as facial and body electrotherapy treatments, self-tanning, electrical epilation and Swedish massage therapy, along with client customer service skills.

WHAT GRADES DO I NEED?

4 GCSEs grade 4/C or above including English and maths and a level 2 qualification in a related course.

WHAT’S NEXT?

After you have completed this course you could progress into employment in a range of beauty therapy related roles where you could work in a salon, on a cruise ship or even running your own business.

This course will offer a breadth and depth of study relating to the travel industry, incorporating key aspects of knowledge, skills and understanding of the tourism sector. It will provide an in-depth look into the principles of travel and tourism and allow for exploration into careers within this area. This level 3 course will support you developing your knowledge and understanding of the travel and tourism industry. You will learn about the importance of customer service and prepare for a career within the sector. During the course you will be given the opportunity to gain work

4 GCSEs grade 4/C or above or a level 2 qualification in a related course.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On completion of this course you could enter either employment working within airports, travel agents, hotels or tour agencies, or continue with further study on to higher education. This qualification has UCAS points attached, meaning you can progress to study a travel and tourism, travel management or hospitality management related degree.

APPRENTICESHIPS If you feel ready to start work then an apprenticeship could be the right move for you. You will learn on the job, gain a qualification and earn a wage. Sound good? We work with employers from a wide variety of industries with apprenticeship vacancies, so we can help you find the right opportunity.

WHAT WILL I DO?

We will match you with local employers who are looking for an apprentice, guiding you through the application process. Once successful you will start work, learning the skills of the job as you go. On some apprenticeships you will spend one day a week at College. Apprenticeships last between one and four years.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you are looking to start work straight away and prefer to learn in the working environment, then this could be the route for you. This is your opportunity to impress, so you will need to work hard, show dedication, determination and enthusiasm.

YOU NEED:

Entry requirements vary depending on the apprenticeship but all require that: • • •

You are 16 or over You live in England and are not taking part in full-time education You may need to come into College one day a week if your apprenticeship is in a trade such as construction, hair or beauty

ENGLISH AND MATHS

You will study functional skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved grade 9-4/A*-C at GCSE level. The grades you need vary depending on what level of apprenticeship you are studying. In some cases you will study ICT as part of your apprenticeship framework.

FYI:

The way apprenticeships work has changed and they now include an end point assessment. This assessment may include a professional discussion with an external assessor, an apprenticeship showcase (a bit like a portfolio), an observation in your workplace or a practical demonstration. Your assessor will let you know which applies to you.
