Tietomaa is a science centre in Oulu, Finland. It is located in Myllytulli district near the city centre. It is the first science centre in Finland and it was opened to the public on 29 June 1988. Tietomaa is located in old buildings of the Veljekset Åström Oy, a former leather processing factory.

The building is set to have an extension and to be allocated as a museum of science.

The main concept was to mimic a small Nordic village, with wooden boxes that have slanting roofs cladded with copper.

One of the main challenges that was faced during the work was the circulation and flow of movement for both visitors and employees, without having it interrupted while keeping the connection between the original and the new extension.

Stapleton is one of the older waterfront neighbourhoods of the boroughIt was a long-time commercial centre of the island but has struggled to revive after several decades of neglect following the 1964 construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which shifted the commercial development of the island to its interior” Wikipedia.

‘The vortex is the point of maximum energy’ wrote the American poet Ezra Pound.

The design aims to revive the area by establishing a mixed-use development that could allow the area to regain its position as a focal point and connect it to New York City.

Flamenco Flotante

Al Hambra, Spain

Category: Design

Status: IUAV Project

Programs: Revit - Sketchup - Autocad Photoshop - Indesign - Rhino

Flamenco Flotante or Floating Flamenco is an idea to reflect the spontaneous movement of flamenco all around Alhambra.

This idea aims to float the three different sites on the existing fabric of Alhambra according to their necessity and desire. We can say, our intention is to coexist with nature, with old and new. To merge well, sometimes the project floats over the foliage, sometimes over the ruins.

With respect to the splendid nature, age-old trees and history, we have restricted ourselves in terms of footprint and material.

An optimum footprint with carbon-negative material ensures this project lessens the negative impact on mother nature. Side by side, we have also tried to resonate Alhambra in an abstract way, i.e., the repetitiveness of the columns in the allies of Alhambra synchronized with the movement of the dancers, beats of the music and dense green around.

Restore/Preserve an existing building in Arsenale and rehabilitate it to accommodate the Ezra Pound Foundation, which consisted of a public library, an observation tower, and exhibitions, in addition to admin and archive sections. Our design was inspired in some parts by the Pagoda, due to the effect that the Chinese literature had on Ezra pound, and the tower was inspired by the time Ezra was living in Paris. While the long period he lived in a jail cell had a very strong influence on the material selection and the overall atmosphere.

Marea Dubai is the brand/new addition to Dubai International Financial Centre’s repertoire of exclusive venues. Having spent a decade at the top of its game in New York, Marea has earned two Michelin stars and has been voted as one of the best Italian restaurants in Manhattan.

Inside you’ll find seating for 125 guests on the upper floor with luxurious leather seating and neat white tables angled around the space. There’s a chic cocktail bar as you walk in, with a wall of Amber art glowing from behind and a row of plush blue Velvet bar stalls for guests to enjoy a drink before their meal. Downstairs is a more expansive bar area, with low intimate seating for 65 and a more metropolitan vibe.

The restaurant’s design has been commended and featured in numerous publications including, Architectural Digest, Harpers Bazaar Arabia, Caterer Middle East, The National, What’s On, and Hotelier Middle East to name a few.

We used a mix of natural marble stones and wood along with some silver-leafed ceilings to reflect the mood of the space and give it some rustic touches.

Artists were invited to propose some of their works on some of the feature walls in the apartment.

The client preferred the darker colour mood to be laid all over the apartment materials and furniture.

The layout of the apartment actually consisted of two individual units that had to be connected in order to create the spacious areas achieved. Some details had to remain as the authorities required the connection between modern design and the ancient era to remain.

Some furniture was designed by VUAD and tailored to fit the ambience of the overall apartment and all windows overlooking an internal courtyard were redesigned with artists in order to allow the light to come in yet prevent external views on the service areas.

The building is located on the most prominent luxury shopping street in Prague, Parizska Street 25, in the heart of the old historical city centre.

It attracts the most sophisticated customers; be it for luxury retail and F&B or private living on of the most sought-after addresses in the city.

The building is surrounded by two small squaresone formed by the Faculty of Law facing the river and the other by the adjacent Intercontinental Hotel.

The main facades provide prominent views facing NE and NW thus allowing maximum use of glass without the negative impacts of solar glare and heat gains.

The architectural materials of the residential scheme were kept to a limited few finishes - white rendered facade walls and curved terrace profiles, glass balustrades, windows and metal tube cladding.

The tube cladding was used both for privacy reasons as well as o reduce the amount of glazing on the sides of the building facing neighbouring plots with dense built-up structures.

Furthermore, the tubular cladding set in front of the south-facing facade helps shade the solid walls and keep the space between them naturally ventilated keeping the building cooler.

Southern facing glazed facade of Building B achieved the shading of the glazed walls via projecting balcony slabs that are blocking the high-positioned sun during peak hours of the day.

Maraska Residential

Zadar, Croatia

Category: Residential

Year: 2016 - Ongoing

Task: Full development of the project including view and area studies and shape study, modeling and layout studies.

Programs: Revit - Autocad - Photoshop - Indesign

The plot is located between the new hotel and retail components of the Maraska development neighbouring the beautiful Maraska Park on the coast of central Zadar on Obala Kneza Trpimira.

The plot is visually connected to the Zadar old town peninsula and the Adriatic Sea. This is one of the most prominent locations of the city and is visible to all tourists and visitors arriving by sea either to the yacht marina or the luxury cruise ship port.

The project envisages the development of a luxury residential component.

Sun and Sustainability

The entire plot has unobstructed sunlight during the entire duration of the day. It is important to provide ample daylight to the residents whilst minimizing direct sun exposure and solar heat gains in order to increase the comfort levels of the residents and reduce the energy consumption of the building.

Facade facades were treated with suitable materials whilst providing shade and ventilation to solid structures and interiors.

Views

Opening the building towards sea views and the park, while connecting the project with the new development of the Hotel and Retail segments. Towards the north and densely populated neighboring plots the building should be more closed and protected.

Greenery

Connecting the inner courtyard and the residents to the adjacent greenery of Maraska park and future Hotel.

Access

Main vehicular access to the development leads from the Ul. Miroslava Krleze and Obala Kneza Trpimira. Both highly frequented routes lead to the centre of the city and the old historical pen-insula.

Revit Model Physical Model Physical Model

The shape of the buildings was governed by the site analysis and orientation towards the best views and sun direction whilst also creating a sanctuary between them.

The idea of the scheme is to create a private and spacious inner courtyard that is protected by the two flanking curved volumes thus creating a community of its own focused on the landscape of the adjacent Maraska park as well as the views of the sea.

The aim is to use the site benefits to the advantage of the residents - provide beautiful views of the old city, the park and the sea and consider the constraints (densely built-up areas adjacent to the site) that need to be shielded off.

The facades are split into two areas based on privacy and view requirements. Towards the sea and the inner courtyards, the facades should be fully glazed and open whilst the facades facing the neighbouring plots with existing buildings are to be more private and opaquer to provide enough privacy and shield the community.

Year: December 2016

Task: Worked on the main layout material studies and internal facades. modeling and internal layouts.

Programs: Revit - Autocad - Photoshop - Indesign

We were asked to enhance the existing internal layout of the Dubai South HQ building to fit the modern and rapidly improving pace of Dubai. Which was achieved by mixing what we thought represented life, greenery, and natural lighting. The existing spaciousness feeling of the atrium was maintained by adapting to the most advanced lighting and acoustic tools.

Category: Interior Offices

Year: February 2017 - Ongoing

Task: Worked on the main layout material studies and internal facades. modeling and internal layouts and sections.

Programs: Sketchup - Autocad - Photoshop - Indesign

With an open budget, we were asked to revamp the existing Zinostenska Bank into the first seven stars luxury hotel in the heart of the old city of Prague.

We tried to use the lightest structures for the new extensions to be built while making sure it fits the space and doesn’t block any view or conflict with the old architecture.

The rooftop was designed in order to give a panoramic view of the beautiful skyline of Prague while keeping the option to modify it into a covered space during the winter season.

The newly made atrium will have platforms that can move in order to suit the hosted event as shown in the sections.

DIFC Office Building

DIFC, Dubai, UAE

Category: Commercial

Year: 2014 - 2015

Task: Concept, Sketchup modeling, floor plans.

Programs: Sketchup - Autocad - Photoshop - Indesign

Occupying the last vacant plot in Gate Village, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), this scheme contains offices and high-end F&B. It was conceived as an extension of the existing development yet required a different approach due to its position at an intersection, with views towards Emirates Towers. Lacasa’s design fused the different architectural languages of the surrounding buildings; the end result is a powerful blueglass mass with an alternating modular pattern, overlapped by an outer skin of granite, mullions and screens.

An abstraction of the DIFC logo was integrated into the structure of the building – a stylized and visually powerful V-shape column carries the main glass mass at the front façade. The client brief required maximization of the floor plate – this presented a challenge due to the irregular geometry of the site. We were requested to come out with 3 different options for facades, one to be identical to the existing architectural style, another one to be a bit different with a mix of modern touches, and the third one to be iconic and different from the surrounding urban fabric. In order to fit within the urban context, designers camouflaged the shape, giving different impressions of the proposed buildings.

32
LACASA

My task was to come up with an iconic option and try to link it cohesively to the surrounding area. So, in order to make that achievable, I had to make the form follow the shape of the adjacent buildings by replacing the stone screening with the crossed structural system and duplicating the glazing in order to increase the thermal isolation.

That structure was adapted from the main gate building in the DIFC and to reflect the identity of the area.

Furnished Apartments

Business Bay, Dubai, UAE

Category: Hospitality

Year: 2013 - 2014

Task: Concept, floor plans development.

Programs: Revit - Autocad - Photoshop

Situated in Business Bay, with prized views of the Burj Khalifa, this contemporary-styled tower features 300 apartments with retail elements on the ground floor. The client requested luxuriously sized apartments, with extensive glazing and balconies to capitalize on views, while accommodating the maximum number of units within the tower. Priority was given to the three-bedroom apartments, which occupy the top levels and enjoy the best views of Burj Khalifa.

An initial challenge was the site’s slope of 8m, yet this was used to the project’s advantage to gain extra GFA on one side. A podium was used to house the parking, pool, and gym, with the recreational areas also overlooking the Burj. Lacasa’s architects used a ‘contemporary local’ design language, and the material palette of glazing, paint, plaster, solid walls, and metal screens is in keeping with other buildings in the area. A curved façade adds panache and dynamism to the overall composition.

34
LACASA

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was the huge GFA that we were required to fit in the plot, and to make the building look as slim and delicate as possible.

So I had make a special treatment for the facades which is adding different layers while keeping in mind the efficiency and total construction cost.

The landscape design was inspired by the layered facade as well as the idea of keeping the gym opened up to the pool. Moreover, the different levels that allows all passersby have a view over the pool.

Palestine School of Art

Ramallah - Palestine

Category: Educational

Year: 2015 - 2016

Task: Facade Concept

Programs: Revit - Autocad - Photoshop

Located in Palestine, on the cliffs of Ramallah. A school of arts was requested to be designed and proposed a design that will present the Palestinian culture and history.

So, we thought of the local woven fabrics and used the shape in the design of the plan taking into consideration the different levels of the natural land, while maintaining as much as possible of the shape of the real ground, in order to achieve a greener design.

While utilizing the natural resources of the area.

36
LACASA

Using the main concept of the woven fabrics in the plans had to be reflected in one way or another on the facades themselves.

The outdoor Amphitheatre was carved into the natural contour lines in order to make use of the sloping lands and was partly hidden under the building itself to provide some protection.
