Summer of abundance
When I think of the summer season, I think of abundance everywhere I look. There is an abundance of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables (can't wait to bite into tomato sandwiches!). There is an abundance of daylight that allows us to play into the gorgeous Lake Murray sunsets. There is an abundance of uninterrupted family time as kids enjoy time away from school. And, there is an abundance of amazing local businesses that make our city a special place to call home.
I am excited to welcome you to our Open Kitchen issue of Fig Columbia and for you to hear from local farmers across the Midlands who are working hard and cultivating produce that nourishes our bodies and our community. Turn the pages to discover how to support our local restaurants, and meet our Fig Authentic, one of my friends, Beach Loveland, who has spent the last decade serving locally roasted and sustainably sourced coffee through Loveland Coffee. We have a vibrant, national award-winning restaurant scene that is waiting for you this summer. Venture out and try a new-to-you restaurant; schedule a weekly date with a friend to catch up over drinks; order your
favorite appetizers and meals to-go when you're headed out of town on vacation; linger longer at the table as you enjoy dessert after your meal. No matter how you choose to celebrate our local restaurant scene, now's the perfect time of year to show these businesses how much you love them!
As your calendars fill up with activities, parties, and adventures, make sure to stop by and shop with the small businesses in this issue. They have sourced all that you need to make your summer the most memorable one yet! Fabulous fashion, poolside accessories, eBikes and luxury vehicles that will get you everywhere you want to go, planners and caterers to help you put together the best summer soirées, and so much more. Columbia is bursting at the seams with businesses and entrepreneurs to make summer extra sweet and enjoyable.
There is so much to look forward to in regard to the summer season here in Columbia. Go out and find an abundance of things that fill your cup!
Warmly, BRYNLEY FARR

An individual coverage health reimbursement arrangement (ICHRA) is a new type of reimbursement model that offers substantial flexibility to employers of all sizes. ICHRA contributions are fully funded with tax-free contributions by the employer to reimburse their employees for eligible medical expenses.
What makes an ICHRA unique is that the money can also be used by employees to pay for individual health insurance premiums. It’s a way for employers to reimburse their employees for insurance rather than buying it for them.
An ICHRA offers:
Lower-cost options for the employer and employee.
Tax-deductible insurance options for employees. Plan choice and flexibility, no matter the group size.

Authentic Beach Loveland
For Beach Loveland, owner of Loveland Coffee, it has always been about more than simply brewing and pouring an excellent cup of coffee. It’s about building community and going the extra mile to have the training and the experience to bring the best coffee to the Midlands. Loveland Coffee started as a kiosk, added a roastery, opened up a brick and mortar location, and most recently, they celebrated 10 years of serving their loyal customer base.
“My favorite part of the journey so far is seeing the fruit from 10 years of hard work and sacrifice,” said Beach. “I love seeing the community come together and being able to be a venue that serves them with love and acceptance. I have, also, greatly enjoyed seeing our staff grow in their passions and gifting. Our business has truly grown into something bigger than we could have hoped or imagined.”
Beach and his wife, Jessica, have poured their creativity, talent, and time into developing Loveland Coffee into what it is today. A large portion of that has been continuously pursuing knowledge about coffee beans, where they come from, and the roasting process. His desire to provide the best product to his customers lead Beach to go all in and earn his SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) Roasting Certification. He traveled to San Francisco to study at Boot Coffee Campus and trained in areas such as learning the history of coffee, thermodynamics in coffee roasting, sensory analysis, roastery management, roast profiling, and green coffee analysis, to name a few.
Every coffee bean brewed at Loveland Coffee has been hand selected and roasted under Beach's guidance. The knowledge of how to do that came from
traveling the world.
“It is so rewarding having control of the whole roasting process, ensuring that it is of the highest quality and fits our customers’ needs,” said Beach. “We have been able to develop longterm relationships with farms from various parts of the world, ensuring their sustainability and consistent offerings. We were even able to visit many of the farms in Guatemala to see first hand the growing process and meet the farmers. Once we secure desired specialty grade coffees, we create roast profiles that highlight the coffee's unique qualities. Having our own roaster also gives us the ability to wholesale to other businesses around town, which supports other stores and coffee businesses, strengthening our community even more.”
Many have wondered how Loveland Coffee came to reside in Irmo. The answer is simple: Beach, Jessica, and the Loveland Coffee team believe in Irmo. It's where Beach and Jessica grew up and where they are raising their family. Prior to Loveland Coffee, Irmo lacked a communal meeting space where everyone was welcomed. Beach and Jessica dreamed of filling that void and their café space has become just that. From live music and trivia nights to classes like yoga and journaling, and even large-scale events, Loveland Coffee is now a place where people come together.
“Since opening our cafe in 2020, the Irmo community has shown up strong for us,” said Beach. “We look forward to serving them and Columbia for many years to come.”
Loveland Coffee has been a proud member of 1% for the Planet since 2019, donating an equivalent of 1% of their sales to make a positive impact on the planet.

welcome to the kitchen
When summer rolls in there is an excitement in the air that lingers. Our community is ready to connect with one another and with our local businesses. Outdoor patio chairs and a crisp glass of wine entice us to make those brunch plans with friends, the taste of fresh strawberry ice cream keeps the kids happy after a long day of play, and dinner parties are the talk of the town thanks to the assistance of incredible ingredients and pre-made dishes found at our favorite local spots. In this issue we celebrate the local restaurants and shops that open their kitchen to us and serve us delicious food that makes us pause and savor every moment.
Cheers to our local restaurants, farmers, store owners, and their teams who make each day in Columbia worth every last bite.

a road trip that’s just peachy
Peaches, with their tangy and sweet flavor, have long been a staple of summers in the South, especially those in South Carolina. They are the star ingredient in your grandmother’s famous peach cobbler—the perfect dessert after a family meal—and in the homemade ice cream you make every year to celebrate the 4th of July. Peaches are synonymous with summer and nobody knows this better than the Yonce family that owns Big Smile Peaches in Johnston, South Carolina.
In 1931, just two years removed from the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and in the heart of the Great Depression, JW Yonce Jr. borrowed money from his father, JW Yonce, to plant 25 acres
of peach trees. It was the beginning of his dream to create a legacy that would provide for his family for years to come, but he never imagined that his small orchard would one day grow to an orchard with over 4,300 acres filled with peach trees producing 38 million peaches!
Big Smile Peaches' peach picking season lasts for 16 weeks each year—May 1 through Labor Day—due to the fact that they grow over 41 varieties of peaches. One day can include picking up to 800,000 pounds of the sweet fruit and packing over 15,000 boxes during peak season production! Big Smile Peaches believes in processing their fruit as quickly as possible, and even
though they pick enormous quantities each day, they still get their peaches from tree to truck within 36-48 hours to ensure optimal quality and taste when it gets to your hands.
The beginning of a new harvest season arrives at the end of winter, just before the days warm up and spring officially begins. Stunning pink blooms cover the tree branches as they mark the beginning of the season. The blooms are followed by peach fruit, which typically takes 3-5 months to grow. Once the peaches begin to ripen, it's time to harvest!
In addition to peaches, Big Smile Peaches also grows, harvests, and ships out delicious pecans from their farm.
Located just an hour outside of downtown Columbia, Big Smile Peaches is the perfect trip for families and friends to enjoy together this summer. 4th generation owners, cousins Chris Yonce and Josh Yonce, are passionate about sharing their family's farm with the community and beyond. They want visitors from near and far to come visit this peach season to experience first hand the hard work that goes into growing and harvesting the perfect peaches that we all love to enjoy.
Take the short drive to visit them. You can drive right up to their office and pick up a box of their freshly picked fruit to take home with you. Their
prices are unbelievably great and you'll be supporting a local family-owned business when you shop with them. We guarantee that not only will you be greeted with a welcoming smile, but you'll have a huge smile on your own face as you head home with your tasty, Certified SC Grown peaches!
Old Fashioned Peach Cobbler
Ingredients:
5 peaches, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 4 cups)
¾ cup granulated sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons butter
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ cup milk
ground cinnamon
Directions:
1. Add the sliced peaches, sugar and salt to a saucepan and stir to combine.
2. Cook on medium heat for a few minutes, until sugar is dissolved and brings out juices from the peaches. Remove from heat and set aside.
3. Preheat oven to 350° F. Slice butter into pieces and add to a 9x13 inch baking dish. Place the pan in the oven while it preheats, to allow the butter to melt. Once melted, remove pan from oven.
4. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk, just until combined. Pour the mixture into the pan, over the melted butter and smooth into an even layer.
5. Spoon the peaches and juice over the batter. Sprinkle cinnamon generously over the top.
6. Bake at 350 degrees for 38-40 mins. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream

capital city bites & sips
The Columbia food scene is buzzing with new and exciting restaurants popping up all the time, while seasoned chefs continue to marvel diners with their culinary creations. Read along for more info on the culinary scene in the capital city.
Breweries Our breweries are whipping up more than delicious craft beers. Their creative flavor combos and local ingredients spread from the brewhouse to the kitchen, where chefs take the reins to create tasty bites that complement the beer itself. Once you make it out to Steel Hands in Cayce for one of their delicious brews, you’ll want to hang out all day. Fortunately, their menu of small and large plates is there to sustain your day drinking plans. They serve up everything from salads to nachos, and they even offer a rotating vegetarian/vegan sandwich. The chef-driven menu at Savage Craft in West Columbia goes well beyond your average pub fare. Boasting three different menus —biergarten, rooftop and brunch, the dining experience here varies depending on when you come and where you sit. Pizza and beer are a classic pair, and Hunter-Gatherer Brewery at The Hangar over in the Rosewood neighborhood excels in both. Their Neapolitan-style pizzas feature a chewy, blackened crust and microgreens from City Roots just across the street.
Fine Dining
Our region’s temperate climate means we have access to farmfresh ingredients all year, and, boy, do our city’s chefs know how to use them. Take Motor Supply Co. Bistro in the Vista, whose menu changes daily based on the ingredients available. You can also visit Terra in West Columbia and you’ll see the care that the chef puts into sourcing local ingredients and citing where they come from on the menu. If you want something a little more traditional, we suggest you head over to Saluda’s in Five Points. You’ll have the chance to dine on some truly inspired entrees while enjoying a one-of-a-kind view of the center of the district. Don’t forget to explore past the city center. We recommend Private Property in Lexington. Known for their atmosphere, stunning outdoor patio, and a great drink list, they never disappoint.

BBQ For a casual barbecue lunch in Columbia, Palmetto Pig, Doc’s Barbecue, and Little Pigs offer Southern buffets loaded with pulled pork, mac and cheese, and all the fixin’s. If you make your way outside of town, Farmboy’s in Chapin and Shealy’s in Batesburg-Leesville are worth the drive and are sure to satisfy your BBQ cravings. If you can’t handle the buffet— no one can blame you for lacking selfcontrol— Midwood Smokehouse and Hudson’s offer full-service restaurants with build-your-own barbecue sandwiches featuring beef brisket, pulled pork, or barbecue chicken. If you’re looking for unforgettable BBQ, you’d be remiss if you didn’t stop by Home Team BBQ in Five Points. From the pulled pork sandwich on a Hawaiian bun to smothered BBQ nachos, an afternoon on the Home Team patio enjoying fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and their famous frozen cocktail the Gamechanger, will be sure to delight.
International You’ll find a lot more than Southern food in Columbia. This region’s vibrant and diverse community can be seen in the wide variety of international cuisine. Try your Thai prepared with different cultural influences at Baan Sawan Thai Bistro, prepare to be delighted by the stunning presentation at Bodhi Thai Dining or snap up some quick carryout from Duke’s Pad Thai. Korean favorites like bibimbap, bulgogi and japchae noodles await at 929 Kitchen & Bar, while Arirang Korean Restaurant will shock you with the barrage of small plates they bring to your table before you can even get to your meal. Get your fill of Italian cuisine with some perfectly prepared pizzas from Il Focolare, moderately portioned pasta dishes that will leave you full, but comfortable, at Il Giorgione , family favorites at Alodia’s Cucina Italiana, or amidst history at the oldest restaurant in the state— Villa Tronco.
Pimento Cheese You may be surprised to learn that Columbia has claim to one of the oldest recorded pimento cheese recipes, first written in a fundraising cookbook in 1912. Today you can enjoy pimento cheese at almost any restaurant you stop in, and because no two serve it up the same way, you’ll have plenty of exploring to do to find your favorite. Looking to start your day off the right way? Try Café Strudel Lexington’s famous low country hash browns topped with pimento cheese. Still got a hankering for that cheesy goodness around lunchtime? You’ll need to head to The Root Cellar and order their southern egg rolls filled with homemade pimento cheese, pulled pork, and Root Cellar BBQ sauce—an original and flavorful twist on this southern delicacy. Get a taste for these and more with the Pimento Cheese Passport, featuring 16 local spots.

With local farmers leading the way for sustainable techniques, the contributions made by the farmers who feed us in the Midlands are a tremendous source of pride for any South Carolinian.

Solidifying faith, serving others
Whether in our own backyard or around the globe, the students of Northside Christian Academy love to serve. Deeply rooted in reverence for biblical traditions, living out the teachings of Jesus Christ through acts of service is an integral aspect of student life. Missions Week is a week-long, faith-based service trip for NCA students in locations across the world. The students roll up their sleeves to host food drives and serve in local soup kitchens as each grade dedicates themselves to a cause each year. These leaders of tomorrow aren’t waiting to make an impact; the students of Northside Christian Academy are starting today.
Students at Northside Christian Academy plant seeds of faith at home and around the world with a Christ-like love and passion for community service.

Alarmingly, South Carolina remains one of the top states in the nation for high rates of domestic violence and domestic homicide. However, did you know that according to the US Department of Education and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 3 young women and 1 in 4 young men between the ages of 14–19 experience physical, emotional, or psychological abuse in their dating relationships? Recognizing the need to be proactive, Sistercare’s long-term and dedicated counseling staff began researching curriculums to address intimate partner violence among youth in our community and to offset the intergenerational cycle of violence prevalent in so many families across South Carolina.
STOP, the acronym for Sistercare’s Teen Outreach Program, was created in 2015 and is making a positive impact in the Midlands. “When speaking to adult survivors of domestic violence, I’m often told they were with that person who committed the act against them since middle or high school. We help teens by providing the tools and knowledge of what healthy relationships really look like,” said Chanta Lawton, one of two specialists leading STOP.
Chanta holds a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling–Mental Health. Sistercare’s other Teen Outreach Specialist, Brandi Jennings, holds a Master of Social Work degree.
"Adolescence can be an experimental time between childhood and young adulthood," said Brandi. "Providing healthy
relationship building tools through the STOP program will hopefully stick with the teens we serve into adulthood. If I could tell a teen one thing it would be, 'You are worth it.'"
Chanta and Brandi share with teens information on boundaries and “red flags” in a judgement-free zone, and as social media continues to change our landscape, they find down-to-earth ways to connect with them at schools, group homes, and faith-based and civic-organizations.
In 2022, STOP reached 2,834 teens at 227 events in the Midlands. During the height of the pandemic, when many teens were feeling isolated and uncertain about the future, STOP specialists worked tirelessly to continue providing the program virtually—serving 2,232 teens. Sistercare’s commitment to serve local teens through STOP is unwavering, and Sistercare staff remain grateful for the community supporting this important program.
"Love is happy," Chanta said. "Love is healthy. Love is respect."
