Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour is the world’s premier destination for design and decoration and in May 2023, during London Craft Week, it will proudly be the home of Artefact, the Contemporary Craft Fair. Now in its third year, Artefact will bring the joy of the hand-crafted and highly collectible to an international audience of designers, architects, collectors and craft-curious enthusiasts.

The Chelsea Fringe – the alternative garden festival and established highlight of the horticultural calendar, will take place with nine days of festivities from 20 - 28 May 2023. CLARIDGE’S ARTSPACE CAFÉ IS UNVEILED

Café culture comes to Claridge’s for the first time, on Brook’s Mews

Bringing café culture to Claridge’s for the very first time, the legendary Mayfair hotel has opened the doors to Claridge’s ArtSpace Café, with its own dedicated entrance on Brook’s Mews bedecked with awning and flag.

Open daily with a focus on breakfast and lunch, the Café offers a vibrant menu with crêpes as a signature, alongside tortillas, toasties, mega madeleines and, naturally, Claridge’s cakes galore. Designed by renowned British architectural designer John Pawson, the Café features a patisserie counter, marble communal table, and entry down to Claridge’s ArtSpace – a vast gallery which rotates exhibitions, free for all to view. At the ArtSpace Café, everything is designed for takeaway fallowing Claridge’s to be eaten alfresco or ‘al desko’ for the very first time.

Freshly made in front of guests all day, Daily Café life starts with pastries galore, fresh from the Claridge’s bakery. Lunch heroes include roasted brie and wild mushroom on toast, croissant sandwiches and the Claridge’s croque madame. Equally, the Café’s chef team have pored over the perfect veggie Reuban – a sandwich which takes two days to make.

Artisan coffee is by independent Cornwall-born Origin Coffee, chai lattes are spiked with turmeric and blocks of chocolate emblazoned with the Claridge’s crest, dunked into hot milk, make the Café’s signature hot chocolate. With juices, smoothies and kombuchas aplenty, champagne – a tipple poured from dawn until dusk at Claridge’s – is also on the menu, served in takeaway coffee cups, café style.

Fringe organisers are now encouraging everyone to start thinking about the imaginative, quirky, and unusual ideas they might bring to the 2023 Fringe to help create another bumper celebration of horticulture and grassroots gardening.

Thousands of events have taken place in more than 20 different countries since the first Fringe was held in 2012. What started as a back-of-a-postcard idea has grown over a decade into an international event which is an established fixture of the gardening calendar. It remains an unfunded, unsponsored and volunteer-run Community Interest Company (CIC), powered by a small but

dedicated group, with many events in the festival free to attend. Contributors and venues over the years have included community gardening groups, public parks, artists, poets, chefs, galleries, schools, and major institutions such as Kew, the Inner Temple, the Natural History Museum, and Covent Garden Flower Market, among many others. Despite its name, the festival reaches well beyond Chelsea; not just to every quarter of London, but also to the far corners of the UK and around the world. Events have taken place on the Isle of Mull, in Monmouth, Leeds, Bristol and Henley-on-Thames, and the Fringe’s global appeal has been underlined by enthusiastic participants signing up in Canada, Sweden, Poland, Italy, Australia, and Japan.

Events usually begin to appear on the Fringe website from February, while registration remains open right up until the very last day of the festival. Potential event organisers are encouraged to make contact as soon as possible, to make the most of the promotional potential that taking part brings. Anyone with an idea is encouraged to get in touch now at info@chelseafringe. com outlining what they propose to do as part of the 2023 festival programme. LONDON’S LARGEST FREE FLOWER FESTIVAL BLOOMS FOR 2023 WITH THE THEME ‘FLOWERS ON FILM’ 22ND – 28TH MAY 2023

Chelsea in Bloom, the world-class floral art show and London’s largest and most prestigious free flower festival is returning this spring with the theme ‘Flowers on Film’. The streets of Chelsea will be transformed with floral creations adorning the frontages of more businesses, shops and restaurants than ever before, taking inspiration from characters and storylines that have graced the big screen, famed cinematic awards and the neighbourhood’s silver screen heritage.

Chelsea in Bloom is produced by Cadogan, in association with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), extending the Chelsea Flower Show out into the local area. Large-scale central installations will spring up around the neighbourhood, nodding to this year’s theme, Flowers on Film, including a life-sized Oscar’s statue and interactive red carpet on Pavilion Road and a cinematic celebration on Sloane Square (alongside the Information Point, where the previously sell-out complimentary rickshaw rides and walking tours can be booked), both by designers All for Love London.

Further installations will be found along the King’s Road, on Dovehouse Green and at Royal Avenue, as well as a number at Duke of York Square and along Sloane Street.

In 2022, nearly 100 shops, hotels and restaurants competed for the covered awards with floral masterpieces. Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit Awards will be awarded to participants by RHS judges alongside a celebrating lifestyle judge, in addition to the top awards for ‘Best Floral Display’, ‘Highly Commended’ and ‘Innovation Award’, with winners announced on Tuesday, 23rd May 2023.

Voting for ‘People’s Champion’ is decided by the public and online voting will open on Monday 22nd and close at midnight on Thursday 26th – please vote for your favourite!

Marking its 10th anniversary year, the Let’s All Dance Ballet Company is thrilled to be presenting its biggest and most ambitious show to date, with a glittering new production of Cinderella.

The Let’s All Dance Ballet Company ensures all its productions are accessible to children and families with narrative and character led storylines, colourful sets and costumes and beautiful soundtracks. Cinderella is produced by the Let’s All Dance Ballet Company, which was founded by Artistic Director Orit Sutton in 2010, providing dance classes and parties across London. Using her skills and experience in professional dance and theatre, Orit produced the company’s first show, The Princess & The Frog, in 2013. The success of the production led to many more productions including Alice in Wonderland, The Ugly Duckling, The Nutcracker, The Magic Word, The Princess and the Pea, Sleeping Beauty and Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

Orit Sutton knows that the beauty, grace and strength of professional dancers can be truly inspirational and believes that every child should have access to high quality productions of live dance. Surrey Hills International Music Festival (formerly Investec International Music Festival) is delighted to announce the programme for its 2023 season.

Each spring, Surrey Hills International Music Festival (SHIMF) brings world-class musicians to perform in beautiful and unique venues across the Surrey Hills. Following 2022’s focus on Vaughan Williams and his Surrey connections, this season’s programme celebrates the wider world of international music-making, from Hollywood jazz to European chamber masterworks and contemporary British choral music.

2023 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:

• World-renowned choral ensemble Tenebrae return to the Festival to perform sacred works by J S Bach and Sir James MacMillan in the glorious Georgian splendour of Holy Trinity Church in Guildford.

• The Julian Bliss Quintet brings Hollywood jazz to the spectacular setting of RHS Garden Wisley’s Hilltop Building, in a programme celebrating some of the greatest tunes to have been used in film from the 1930s to the present day.

• The great Canadian-born cellist Gary Hoffman – ‘one of the music world’s best-kept secrets’* makes a welcome return to perform Mendelssohn, Nin, Brahms and Cassadó alongside SHIMF Artistic Director Wu Qian at The Menuhin Hall.

• The award-winning Sitkovetsky Trio (of which SHIMF Artistic Director and pianist Wu Qian is a founder member) performs chamber masterpieces by Beethoven and Dvořák at The Menuhin Hall.

SHIMF’s on-going commitment to supporting young artists continues with two Lunchtime Young Artist Concerts: the first at West Horsley Place featuring the current holders of The Musicians’ Company’s New Elizabethan Award – guitar & soprano/double bass duo Gus McQuade & Eleanor Grant, and guitarist Sasha Savaloni –and the second at St James’ Church in the picture-perfect village of Shere, featuring gifted young students of The Yehudi Menuhin School.

The Sitkovetsky Trio also welcomes two Yehudi Menuhin School students to perform alongside them in Dvorak’s second Piano Quintet as part of 13 May’s Festival Finale programme.

The door into the garage is a submarine door and what lies beyond was far from a usual garage; with a strip-lit red carpet leading through to a basement cinema room fully fitted with bespoke red velvet seating. “When they had the cinema installed they had a grand opening party of famous film characters with the help of friends involved in the film business. George was, of course, Captain Sparrow, a character that inspired the feathers he wore in his long hair”.

Always keen to be different and stand out from the crowd George was a creative man who loved to express himself through his unique sense of style with ever changing haircuts, beard styles and fashion choices; “Dad LOVED clothes, always looking so cool, there was no-one like him!” his daughter remembers.

Upstairs on the first floor the views really steal the show and it’s easy to see how well this home fulfilled George’s dream to live by the water. A bespoke galley kitchen overlooks the harbourside with a balcony to enjoy sundowners with the stunning sunsets. SPOTLIGHTS CREATIVITY AND RESILIENCE OF UKRAINIAN DESIGNERS By Prudence Wade

Three of Ukraine’s most prominent designers have shown their latest collections on the final day of London Fashion Week (LFW).

Kseniaschnaider, Paskal and Frolov made their LFW debut at the Old Selfridges Hotel, as Ukrainian Fashion Week has been cancelled due to the war.

At the beginning of the show, a voice on the speakers said: “These collections are and will continue to be a piece of history, symbolic of the resilience and courage of Ukraine and its people.”

On each seat was a description of each designer’s collection, a Ukrainian flag and a QR code for UNITED24 – the official fundraising platform of Ukraine.

Kseniaschnaider – founded by husband and wife team Ksenia and Anton Schnaider – opened the show. The brand is known for its use of denim and commitment to sustainability. The show notes said the collection was “designed during the war and produced under raid sirens in Ukraine”. Despite the circumstances, it was infused “with an air of hope and positivity”.

Denim ran throughout the collection, in edgy pairs of jeans and cut-offs. There were also plenty of sporty elements, including a tailored tracksuit and Adidas trainers. It was given a distinctly Ukrainian feel with the addition of traditional patchworking techniques and models with braids in their hair. Dead stock ties were used throughout the collection, patchworked into blazers and skirts.

According to the show notes, this was a symbol of Ukrainian men no longer needing ties – instead only wearing military uniforms.

Next came Paskal, by designer Julie Paskal, whose collection, called Out of Cocoon, had everything themed around butterflies.

Models wore dresses and skirts in pastel pinks and blues, almost completely covered in delicate, laser-cut butterflies.

It seemed to take inspiration from 90s fashion, with crop tops, slip dresses and visible thong detailing on some outfits.

Frolov closed the show, helmed by

designer Ivan Frolov. Frolov has become a celebrity favourite, most recently worn by Beyonce during her first performance in five years at the opening of Atlantis The Royal in Dubai. She donned a see-through pink minidress with silver detailing from the brand. For the autumn/winter collection, the show notes said Frolov was inspired by “reflections of the current events in Ukraine, and the value of Ukrainian cultural heritage”. This collection had the most options for the red carpet, from white tulle gowns with corset detailing to pink power suits. A heart motif ran throughout the outfits, which is described as “the everlasting element of the brand”.

Swarovski crystals embellished many of the outfits, and knitwear featured the Ukrainian fertility symbol, an ear of grain. The show ended with Ksenia Schnaider, Julie Paskal and Ivan Frolov walking the runway holding the Ukrainian flag with the UNITED24 logo.

After the show, Ukrainian Kate Kadeniuk, who works in PR for Kseniaschnaider, told the PA news agency: “It’s a dream to present our country, our culture, our view of living in the real world in London.”

Kadeniuk wants the show to highlight “our technique, our Ukrainian hand, what we put in our designs”.

This includes the patchwork used by Kseniaschnaider and the corset detailing in the Frolov collection.

Julien Macdonald returned to the London Fashion Week schedule after a three-year hiatus with a celebrity-packed show.

Amanda Holden and her 17-year-old lookalike daughter Lexi were on the front row as the collaboration with Mexican designer Gabriela Gonzalez was unveiled.

Gemma Collins, Despacito singer Luis Fonsi, Strictly Come Dancing stars Aljaž Škorjanec and Janette Manrara, and presenter Ashley Roberts, were among the other celebrities in attendance.

While supermodels Winnie Harlow, Leomie Anderson and Cindy Bruna walked the runway.

The Julien X Gabriela AW23 show was held at the ornate Freemasons’ Hall, central London – the ideal backdrop for a typically glitzy collection.

THE DESIGN ARCHIVES

The Design Archives owned by Sharon Crowson, is a London based boutique interiors brand specialising in printed textiles and wallpaper. The designs are inspired by historic documents taken from the Crowson Archive, the legacy of her distinguished textile printer and collector father, Derek Crowson. The brand under Sharon’s direction, remains constant in its commitment to embracing a classic heritage of pattern and texture, while injecting a contemporary twist through her signature taste in colouring and an inventive use of scale, bringing to life some of the archive’s most beautiful designs.

Each stand alone collection has a specific aesthetic and style. The best selling Shala collection includes three vintage designs from the historical archive. The collection includes the eponymously named Shala based on a classic Indian floral motif, a large scale floral chinoiserie with sweeping botanical notes called Exotic Fruits, and Albertina which is a classic French toile design. Last year the brand also launched The Birchgrove Collection, its first dedicated group of wallpaper designs to add a new offering alongside its bespoke fabric backed papers. New for 2023 is Samarkand, a vibrant and eclectic fabric collection comprising of printed archival designs inspired by traditional ikat and hand woven kilim textiles, which will be previewed this spring at London Design Week.

Over the last five years the archive has provided an invaluable source of inspiration for Sharon, and mindful that she wanted to capitalise on this rich and diverse collection, she embarked on an ambitious project creating The Crowson Archive. “We curated and digitised the entire collection of over 5000 designs which has been a massive labour of love but so satisfying” explains Sharon. The archive can now be accessed by anyone who registers on the dedicated site, providing an incredible source of inspiration of styles, from 18th century Japanese prints, through to French chinoiserie and modern 1960s abstract designs.

Spring Clearing Week is just around the corner. Unlike the traditional spring clean, the focus is on clearing the decks of any physical, and consequently mental, clutter. Running from 20-26 March, over 400 members of APDO Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers will be sharing their knowledge and advice to help the UK to declutter and streamline activities in their homes and workspaces.

Katherine Blackler, the UK’s first Certified Professional Organizer (CPO®) and Past-President of APDO explains “Reducing the amount of things you need to clean, maintain, repair and replace saves you time and money. This in turn reduces stress and frustration. Daily agitations like misplacing car keys or running out of an ingredient can be avoided if you first simplify then introduce systems for all the household to follow. Being able to see what you have and knowing where to find it can make a huge difference to how we tackle the day and how we perceive tasks on our agenda.”

She believes that ensuring all the items you own have a logical place to live makes it easier

to regain calm and order – even when it feels more like a tornado has been through your home!

Katherine’s top tips to declutter to feel better:

1. Declutter BEFORE buying any more storage so you can see what you really need.

2. Don’t get overwhelmed trying to tackle the entire house at once. Choose one room and focus on just one area at a time (e.g. the floor, countertop, cupboard, or drawer).

3. Allocate time to sort through things. Switch off and eliminate likely distractions.

4. Getting started is often the hardest part. Take little steps if giant leaps are unrealistic. But definitely start.

5. Take ‘before’ photos. You’ll be inspired by how far you’ve come.

6. Reward yourself for your achievements, both during and at the end of the process (ideally with experiences and not more ‘stuff’!).

7. Ask for impartial and professional help if it seems daunting, or it becomes too emotional reviewing belongings with your friends and family.
