GLAMOROUS RECYCLING

Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery, due to open in Chequer Street, St Albans in a few weeks, have been championing ‘glamorous recycling’ for 25 years. Taking customers’ existing, and often sentimental pieces of jewellery and redesigning them into a perfectly tailored piece of jewellery for the price of a generic, high-street engagement ring. Jewellery inherited from loved ones or handed down from previous generations is precious but sometimes needs a new lease of life. Redesigning jewellery can be a fantastic way to carry the sentimentality over into something wearable, in your own style and size –not to mention it is also a great ethical option as no new mining will take place.

From precious earrings, brooches, rings and necklaces, so many items containing gemstones

and reusable metal can be redesigned. These beloved items don’t just have to sit in a jewellery box gathering dust anymore, they can be worn and enjoyed, as was their original intention.

It is hard to put such valuable pieces into someone else’s hands, but with a team of talented designers and expert goldsmiths with unsurpassed skills, knowledge and experience, Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery put your mind at ease by putting you at the centre. Designers are on hand to keep you involved at every step and you are even able to watch your jewellery being melted down and reformed through the glass walls of the workshop in rural Hertfordshire – lovingly referred to as ‘the goldsmith’s bowl’!

The bespoke experts lovingly create wonders every day. A recent company favourite being an extraordinary, handcrafted solid gold umbrella figurine as a tribute to late Grandma June who would often lend out umbrellas to her loved ones. For the Harriet Kelsall Bespoke team, it’s important that each piece of jewellery keeps telling its own special story.

Recent customer Lesley summarised her bespoke journey after working with Primrose Hill designer Tom: “I felt so involved in the design, it really was very special and exciting. When my ring was finally ready, I was stunned at how beautiful it was, the original stones looked even more stunning and yet it was a completely different ring; totally unique and looked amazing on my finger. From the drawings to the real thing, breath-taking.”

A Taste of History

BUN-dles of foodie fun in St Albans this Easter

St Albans has a fascinating history with food and drink with rich heritages including it being home to England’s oldest pub and the precursor to the Hot Cross Bun.

It is said that the Alban Bun originated in St Albans where Brother Thomas Roclliffe, a 14th Century Monk at St Albans Abbey, created the original recipe. From 1361, Brother Thomas would bake these buns to feed the poor on Good Friday.

You can taste the bun for yourself at St Albans Cathedral from Ash Wednesday. Handmade in the Cathedral’s very own Abbot’s Kitchen the bun is baked to a traditional recipe, which remains a closely guarded secret, and whilst the Alban and the Hot Cross Bun are similar in taste, they differ in appearance with the Alban Bun having a distinctive cross cut into the unbaked dough with a knife rather than the piped cross of the modern day bun.

Pop in and enjoy one (or two)! The Abbot’s Kitchen is open daily 10-4pm.

HISTORICAL HOTSPOTS

St Albans is bursting with fabulous foodie hotspots. Make a weekend of it and indulge in some of the finest artisan food and drink this Easter.

The vibrant and historic St Albans Market was founded in 860 by the sixth Abbot of St Albans. Running twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays it draws people from far and wide who love the buzz and the wide selection of fresh and artisan goods. Check out both ends of the Market for some of the finest array of street food you can taste.

Did you know there are more pubs per square mile than anywhere else in the country? If you like your pint served with a bit of character, St Albans is the place for you. From Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, regarded as England’s oldest pub to the Snug (formerly the Fleur de Lys) the city is jam packed with historic pubs that have been a favourite place to refuel and relax for centuries.

It wouldn’t be Easter without something sweet. For a real treat, wander to The Pudding Stop on Verulam Road – the shop counter is piled high with freshly baked goods including morning pastries, breakfast waffles, hot puddings and their award-winning Bake At Home puds. From Carrot Cake to Pecan Pie, every bake is handmade from scratch and promises to satisfy your sweet tooth.

equipment out that could be used to gain entry to your home. It is also important to be aware of the latest trends in criminal activity, such as the use of social media to identify potential targets and take steps to protect against these threats.

In recent years, the importance of residential security in London and the home counties has become ever more important, particularly for high-net-worth individuals who are concerned about protecting their families and assets. With the ever-increasing crime rates and a vast increase in targeted, often violent highvalue burglaries and street robberies, it is crucial for homeowners to take proactive steps to enhance their personal and property security.

One of the most effective ways to improve home security is to make your property less appealing to criminals by investing in technical and physical security, such as CCTV, alarms, and lighting. Also, fences, gates, windows, and doors. A 24/7 security guard presence or residential security team is advised should your profile, status, threat and risk require such measures. This is an essential requirement for high-profile business leaders, celebrities, political and royal stock.

In addition to these often-expensive solutions, there are several simple steps that everyone can take to enhance their security. These include making sure you lock doors and gates, close windows when you go out, keep your car keys out of site, and don’t leave ladders or garden

THE WONDERS OF HITCHIN LAVENDER

Lavender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times.

We have over 30 acres of lavender containing a wide range of varieties for you to explore. You’ll be able to wander wherever you like within the field and pick some lavender to take home with you. We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed!

We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.

PLANTING & GROWING

Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a

porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through.

Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in.

Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long.

Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive.

When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established.

There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting

your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up.

When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.

WHICH VARIETY TO PICK?

There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from.

We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field.

Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for domestic use.

Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September.

If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop. Dogs are welcome on-site so long as they are kept on a lead and any doggy deposits are cleared

away by their owners.

The lavender attracts a diverse mix of wildlife, in particular bees. You’ll be able to see many bees amongst the lavender rows. Much of the other wildlife may be harder to spot but the farm is home to hares, butterflies, insects, partridges, skylarks and more.

Experience a different view of Hitchin Lavender and the surrounding countryside by walking along the public footpaths which intersect our farm alongside our main field and outbuildings.

Professional photography is allowed anytime during our general opening hours but is subject to an additional fee.

INSPIRATION, COLOUR AND CHARACTERS

Internationally acclaimed artist Christian Develter makes a post pandemic splash in the UK with the opening of his first solo exhibition at Molasses House this month.

Christian Develter, a “global nomad”, born in 1968 in Blankenberge, Belgium, has resided and worked in Asia since the mid-nineties and now calls Cambodia home with a purpose-built studio nestled amongst the serene paddy fields of Siem Reap, home of the iconic Angkor Wat temple.

Christian uses oils as an instrument to portray his rich experiences of people and cultures around the world. As a highly versatile artist whose work pushes boundaries, he believes that despite cultural differences and starkly different socio-realities, there are moments that can be appreciated by everyone.

Christian’s sense of beauty and the individual strength and spirit of his characters is developed through careful consideration of line, lighting, and geometry as well as his insightful awareness

of the power of colour to reveal beyond the surface of each character. At the heart of these works is a search not just for physical beauty but also for something of the spirit that embraces and motivates each one in our era of hyper celebrity. The uniqueness of Christian’s work lies in his radical choice for strong colours and mixture of oils and acrylics usually preferring to combine them with bold shapes. His works are deeply powerful and compelling in the way they capture light and space in translating Christian’s desire to create large iconic works.

‘CHIN SERIES’ INSPIRATION

The inspiration for this body of work comes from the intricately tattooed faces of the Chin women located in the North-Western region of Myanmar. In 2012, Develter travelled the region extensively and visited the remote tribes of the Chin region, in which this series is entitled. Each painting from this series is named after a village or area within

the Chin region. The concept behind the works being the modern Asian face of today, overlayed with the ribal tattoos - grounding us back to our cultural roots and heritage. This striking collection of work is an invitation to explore the artist’s contemporary narrative of evolving cultures through his district creative style.

The Chin tribe and their tattoos are relatively unknown to the outside world. These tribes in north-western Myanmar (Chin and Rakhine State) to this day use tattoo facial markings that is a centuries old tradition to distinguish one hill tribe from another along with their marital status and social ranking. Together with the Derung tribe in Southwest China’s Yunnan province, they are the only other tribe known to adhere to this traditional ancient practice. Both tribes are believed to be from the same Indo-Tibetan lineage.

DEVELTER & MOLASSES HOUSE, AN ESSENTIAL EXHIBITION

Collaborating with cigar brand Siglo and Italian whiskey Samaroli, Christian draws upon his studies at Ghent Art School and Antwerp Fashion Academy, to create a joyful series of compositions, presenting a radiant kaleidoscope of shapes and forms. His choice of playful humour and bright colours recalls the artist’s view of popular fashions and trends. These are self evident in his most recent work, launched this month, building on the acclaimed Cigar Series which continues to evolve with global icons from film, fashion, literature and politics.

Develter’s world acclaimed works are housed in some of the most spectacular properties and art collections around the world including that of Royalty. The vibrant UK exhibition brings together a comprehensive collection and an immersive experience to view a curated vision of Christian’s internationally acclaimed signature works from his Original Oil Paintings and Limited Edition Lithograph Collections. Bold, vivid and iconic understate Develter’s work. A visual feast for the eyes and walls.

THE ODYSSEY CINEMA, ST ALBANS

The Odyssey Cinema is a 400-seat cinema in a stunning art deco building in the heart of St Albans. We opened our doors in 2014, after the closure of the Odeon almost a decade prior. The building lay dormant for several years, with an ensuing battle that saw it almost becoming a Tesco supermarket. Since reopening as The Odyssey, we have proudly shown a curated and mixed programme including blockbusters, indie films, foreign language titles, documentaries and lots more. On occasion, the director of a film has chosen The Odyssey to come in person to present the film and take part in a Q+A afterwards.

Which are some of the wonderful reasons we choose to celebrate our anniversary each year, and this year on the 23rd February 2023 we were delighted to celebrate our eighth anniversary, especially after 2020 and 2021 being such tricky years for the cinema. The guests include a mixture of local VIPs, customers who have generously supported us since the start, and a limited number of seats are available to the general public. The film is always a total secret and surprise to

everyone, including the staff. The film is a new release and we are very lucky to be the first cinema to screen it officially in the UK. It is revealed when the curtains open and the title appears on the screen. It is a chance for all to raise a glass of bubbles and share some cake in true birthday style.

We pride ourselves in creating a unique experience for all. Here, attendees can enjoy The Odyssey’s extensive food and drink menu, which includes our very popular cheese plates, falafel dishes, tortillas, olives and more. The Odyssey curates a wine menu so visitors have a choice of the finest red and white wines, and we are also delighted to support local breweries such as Tring Brewery and the 3 Brewers of St Albans with a range of their beers. We even have a local gin, from Tring-based Puddingstone Distillery.

To all our patrons- to those we know by name or by face, those queuing outside our doors as our monthly releases go on sale, first timers and those bringing family and friends who didn’t know we existed, without you we would not be here, so thank you all.

Cellar Door Wines

Cellar Door Wines is an Independent retail and wholesale wine merchant established 2004 by Miles and Peter Lilliott. Nineteen years on, and a world pandemic later, we’re still trading successfully on the Verulam industrial estate on the London Road and have a second store in the beautiful Stable Yard at Hatfield House. The two shops and our online business are run by Co-Owner Penny Edwards and manager, Geraldine Shearer. We have a huge range of wine from around the world including Canada, Lebanon, Georgia, Romania and Uruguay. Wines of South Africa and Italian wines are our speciality. We also sell a small, high quality range of locally brewed craft ales and small batch spirits. Our shelves are categorised by style rather than country or grape in order to encourage our customers to try something new. In 2022 we started a wine club where subscribers receive monthly, quarterly or bi-monthly bespoke cases delivered to their doorstep.

Our friendly, WSET qualified team is always on hand and willing to offer their recommendations to our customers. Our bespoke gifting and gift wrapping and delivery service is highly regarded in the St Albans community.

We hold regular ticketed producer wine tastings at St Albans and Hatfield and offer private tastings for up to 18 people, there is always a great selection of cheese and charcuterie served at our events. There are also two fantastic wine dispensers at our St Albans branch which always have 16 different wines available to taste or buy by the glass.

There is a hidden gem, St Albans (Chiswell Green) Vineyard called Wimbushes. Our team members are involved in the harvesting of the grapes in September and pruning of the vines in January. We have the great privilege of selling this rare wine made from Solaris and Rondo grapes - in 2021 only 600 bottles were produced.

with music and lyrics by Stephen

Follies tells the story of a group of former showgirls who reunite for a one-night-only performance at their old Broadway theatre, which is about to be demolished. As the characters reminisce about their past glories, they are forced to confront the harsh realities of their present lives and the choices they have made.

Filled with humour, heartache and an unforgettable score, including hits like “Broadway Baby,” “I’m Still Here,” and “Losing My Mind,” Follies is a masterclass in musical theatre and a poignant and ultimately uplifting exploration of the power of friendship and the magic of the theatre. Follies also treats its audiences to a fabulous array of thrilling tap, jazz and showgirl dance numbers. If it’s high energy routines you like, then this show is a must for you!

The production will feature a talented cast of local performers, and is directed by Linda Dyne

Lockers Park School

Lockers Park is an academically-focused school with a tailored approach to education that enables our boys to achieve superb outcomes alongside celebrating an enthusiasm for life. Being a school where classes are 16 or less, creates a thriving community where each member of staff knows each pupil and helps him to make the most of his school life. This is a place where outstanding results are achieved and where pastoral care excellence, camaraderie and kindness thrive.

Habits of mind are at the heart of our curriculum. We use educational theory to adapt our teaching which develops boys’ skills with a practical, problembased approach. This focus on how boys learn best helps increase concentration in the classroom with fast-paced, interactive lessons. School days are deliberately longer than normal as this allows the pupils the time they need to recharge their batteries through well-considered breaks throughout the day. Sport for all and on a daily basis is a cornerstone of what is on offer, as is a wide range of academic subjects and co-curricular activities.

We pride ourselves on excellent Common Entrance results (100% pass rate) and recent

leavers have joined Eton, Harrow, St Albans and Berkhamsted with a range of scholarships and awards.

Our flexible boarding provision allows boys to gain confidence, independence and boost their self-esteem in a supportive environment. Senior Schools regularly comment how well-prepared Lockers Park boys are for 13+ education.

We offer wraparound care that is second to none. Boys can arrive from 7.30am and stay until 7.30pm, receiving three high quality meals and enjoying the teacher-run afterschool activities. The optional Saturday School academic programme gives pupils access to lessons that will stretch their interests, or allow them to build greater understanding in areas where they need more support. This fully flexible offer is included within the school fees at no extra cost.

Whilst many schools lose pupils in Year 7, we continue to grow due to the strength of our academic programme and success at sending boys to a wide range of Senior Schools. Scholarships are available to talented boys who wish to experience the benefits of a Lockers Park education. lockerspark.co.uk

AS PUPIL VOICE GETS LOUDER, SCHOOLS MUST LISTEN HARDER…

Art and other creative outlets so often showcase what matters to young people today. Expression through creativity can help students to highlight personal struggles or address topics they are passionate about. At my school, there are also many elements of pride in heritage and of identity that come through via creative works. A year on since Sarah Everard’s life was taken, and a few years since the murder of George Floyd, you can see an obvious knock-on impact of these incidents and other social movements in our schools today. Perhaps most significantly, pupil voice has got louder.

Schools are also listening much harder to pupils. The Everyone’s Invited movement tarnished many

school reputations across the country. It revealed some traumatic issues that schools hadn’t known about or identified before. Issues around feeling safe have had sharper focus too and schools have had to think this through carefully. In my school we have thought hard about this and have asked pupils to physically draw onto site maps to indicate where they feel safe and where they feel vulnerable, so that we can adapt our common spaces and our duty system.

As a school we have also ensured that all stakeholders have received diversity and inclusion training and we are looking hard at how we can ensure our staff and governors reflect our community. There is still some way to go of course. With many pupils running with societies that are important to them whether it is the LGBTQ+ group or a faith service of their choice, things have shifted irreversibly for the good in schools.

Listening to our young people is key and schools are continually having to find new ways of leaning into conversations and nurturing pupils to talk more but as ever, keeping up as parents is not easy. Strong pastoral settings in school are providing parents with help on how to navigate this period to best encourage, but also support their children. Thankfully schools are also thinking more about their position on these issues today and how they can help in a positive way rather than simply reacting.

Taking Play to a new level at Hertford Barns Day Nursery

As well as tending to an array of herbs, fruit and vegetables the whole year round, children of all ages are able to immerse themselves in a curriculum of eco-activities, including crafting with natural and recycled materials and creating habitats for wildlife, as well as impressive bug hotels for insect observations. The recent addition of a baby garden, complete with decking for the summer months and age-appropriate resources including a mud kitchen, help to take play to new levels and encourage a lasting love of the outdoors.

Hertford Barns also boasts a comprehensive school readiness programme. Covering topics ranging from self-care to phonics, pre-schoolers can practice fundamental skills such as using cutlery and writing and identifying their names.

Set against a backdrop of rolling fields where children point out hot air balloons overhead and wave to farmers passing by on their tractors, Hertford Barns Day Nursery provides the perfect space for children to thrive in countryside surroundings.

The nursery days are filled with exciting activities, planned around the personal interests of children and designed in line with Early Years Foundation Stage principles to ensure they are prepared with the knowledge and skills needed for their next steps. Inside the stunning barn conversion and historic stable block, spacious classrooms are home to stimulating learning spaces, state of the art ICT, toys and equipment, messy play stations, ‘role play’ areas and purposebuilt facilities including a children’s shaker style kitchen for cooking and baking activities.

Here pre-schoolers can design their own menus and showcase their culinary skills, all whilst learning basic mathematical concepts through weighing and measuring, as well as the importance of good nutrition to healthy lifestyles. From fresh fruit salads to healthy pitta pizzas, children beam with pride as they serve and enjoy their creations, which they make using produce they have grown themselves in the picturesque gardens outside.

Devoted practitioners are also keen to ensure families are supported in these key areas and provide bespoke resources, including a series of books published by Childbase Partnership professionals to offer expert guidance, as well as exclusive access to the ‘Childbase at Home’ website and app, filled with online books and masterclasses to ensure children are confident and independent learners, ready to embrace school life. Hertford Barns provides a fully-inclusive service and takes children from six weeks to five years. A TOUCH OF ROMANCE

We love a classic French toile de Jouy, so we have stuck with the ‘pastoral romantic’ genre for this print, although the colourway is far from typical! The slight hint of black mixed through these delicate pastel shades makes this print eminently wearable and provides the perfect undertone for pairing up the perfect outfit. This gown is perfect as a luxurious house coat or for layering as a chic accessory to your favourite outfit. onehundredstars.co.uk

JAPANESE STYLE

Our original indigo hand-dyed bandanas are proudly made in Japan. The pattern is created by a technique called Bassen (discharge) where a silk screen is placed over the dyed fabric resulting in destined areas losing their colour, creating very thin patterns and revealing the intricate designs. mindtheg.com

WATCH THE BIRDIE

If you’re looking for a simple, easy to wear dress, Mabel is just the thing! She’s a classic pinafore and looks great worn as is or layered over your favourite spring knitwear. And lets not forget her classic Palava deep pockets. palava.co

CREAM OF ROYSTON

Once you know your son or daughter is getting married a wedding is just the excuse you need for dressing up.

Bride aside all eyes will be on the Mums. Cream has been trading in Royston for 47 years and is predominantly a special occasion store. The extensive stock on two floors is colour co-ordinated for ease of selection. Everything is available from outfits (sizes 6-28) to shoes, bags, hats, fascinators and lingerie.

Brands stocked include Condici, Ispirato, Veni Infantino and Couture Club. Less formalwear from Frank Lyman, Alison, Glitz and Lewis Henry is also ideal for a day at the races, wedding abroad or guests and cruising.

Mothers usually purchase their outfits four to six months when everything gels and you have that wow factor. It is usual for the mothers to co-ordinate with the wedding party. Many brides have a colour scheme and it is a good idea to either blend or contrast with this. It is very important to be comfortable with what you are wearing. A

shift dress with a jacket is always a popular choice because the jacket can be taken off later. Elegant and slightly understated always works and a hat should complement the outfit.

Whilst the outfit must be perfect for the occasion it is important to have the correct lingerie underneath which can alter the whole look of a garment. Cream has a well stocked lingerie department which can be tried on with the outfit. A free alteration service is available on all full priced outfits bought in store, a fitting being carried out one month before the event. Shoes and bags are made in Spain in different heel heights and beautiful leathers. These are made to order if not available in stock.

The Sale shop, Occasions for less, located opposite Cream in Roysia House offers mother of the bride and groom outfits, shoes, bags and hats from previous seasons at fantastic prices. There is also a half price section at Cream of Royston. See the bottom of the pages on Condici and Ispirato on creamfashions.com.

Julien Macdonald makes a star-studded return to London Fashion Week

Julien Macdonald returned to the London Fashion Week schedule after a three-year hiatus with a celebrity-packed show.

Amanda Holden and her 17-year-old lookalike daughter Lexi were on the front row as the collaboration with Mexican designer Gabriela Gonzalez was unveiled.

Gemma Collins, Despacito singer Luis Fonsi, Strictly Come Dancing stars Aljaž Škorjanec and Janette Manrara, and presenter Ashley Roberts, were among the other celebrities in attendance.

While supermodels Winnie Harlow, Leomie Anderson and Cindy Bruna walked the runway.

The Julien X Gabriela AW23 show was held at the ornate Freemasons’ Hall, central London – the ideal backdrop for a typically glitzy collection.

British model Anderson opened the show in a black sequinned bodysuit with cut out details and exaggerated shoulders – to Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ hit Unholy.

Gothic glamour featured heavily in a collection full of the Welsh designer’s signatures.

It included bodycon silhouettes, bejewelled minidresses, metallic gowns, mesh catsuits and masses of sequins.

There were several draped minidresses reminiscent of the silver one that Macdonald famously created for Paris Hilton’s 21st birthday party.

The London Fashion Week veteran is a go-to designer for red carpets, and his ultra-glamorous dresses have recently been worn by Gisele Bundchen and Bella Hadid.

The 51-year-old has also dressed music icons like Beyonce, Kylie Minogue and Jennifer Lopez. The show was soundtracked by a series of club bangers, including Beyonce’s Break My Soul and the TikTok-famous White Lotus theme tune, Renaissance. Bruna’s strutting in a white feathered minidresses elicited cheers from the audience, as did Harlow’s appearance in a black bodysuit and flowing cape with feather

Harlow closed the show, taking a final turn to Chaka Khan’s I’m Every Woman. Macdonald and Gonzalez joined the trio of top models to take a bow as silver confetti rained down –marking a triumphant return to the London catwalks.

Perfectly Imperfect

Discover

As technology advances, screens dominate and robots seem like a very imminent possibility, our homes are turning their backs on perfectly precision-made modern designer furniture and back to the simplest and most honest of decoration – the irregular and imperfect.

Contemporary furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories have taken a distinct turn for the uneven, a sidestep from the ‘bring the outdoors in’ trend that has ruled over contemporary home design for the past few years. Geometrically precise these forms are not, instead it’s as if they’ve been drawn by the human hand of nature itself. Expect wobbles, variations, and a distinct lack of straight lines.

A NOD TO NATURE

Subtly backing up the green colouring, natural materials, and plant patterns currently filling our homes come unbalanced organic shapes, forms that could have evolved out in the garden, woodland or sky, or sea. They have a feel of the stumbled upon rather than the industrial, and if manufacture is alluded to at all, the pieces undoubtedly nod to the individually hand-crafted.

There’s no thought of factories. Every piece gives the impression of a one-off, imbued with love and charming inconsistencies.

This all stems from the natural, of course – the smooth, rounded edges, the bucolic influences, the almost accidental forms. But this modern decorating trend is a nature-inspired design that just so happens to be in your home like it’s been growing there for years overlooked or has been recently discovered behind a wall. Welcome to the completely non-obvious, the almost unseen, the would-have-been-there-anyway-even-if-you-hadn’tnoticed-me school of interiors.

ALL THE FEELS

It’s not about being noticed. It’s about the feeling. These asymmetric forms soothe the mind, as unthreatening as a plant, rock or pool of water with their shapes that speak of fresh air and freedom. These are shapes that seem formed by time rather than an intentional hand. The eye breezes over them, gently bumping across those smooth curves, while the mind draws them in and exhales them, the lack of angles, corners and straight edges signalling that it’s time to relax. One irregular piece of furniture tones down a room, calming its angles and pacifying it, while a larger collection creates a spa, away-for-the-weekend feel, forming a space that’s dedicated to tranquillity, health and peace.

TOP INDOOR POOL CONSIDERATIONS WITH ORIGIN

So, you’ve decided on an indoor swimming pool, however, there are still many decisions to be made along the way. Attention to detail and precise planning are crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house. Luckily, Origin have the answers to all your questions and will be there from concept to completion to give you the pool you’ve been waiting for.

Are you interested in a stand-alone indoor pool house or a pool house extension to your home?

This is the biggest decision you’ll need to make when it comes to your indoor swimming pool as placement and location play a crucial role in the success of a project. There are advantages and disadvantages to both options. You’ll need to think about the main use for the swimming pool, do you want a place to escape away from the home or do you want it attached to your home? Will it play a big part in your daily routine? Do you have a budget you’re working towards?

Will you need planning permission?

For a stand-alone pool house, one that is freestanding and complies with the permitted development design criteria, it’s likely you won’t need planning permission. However, a pool house extension to your home will need planning permission. Origin has a wealth of experience in gaining planning approval for indoor pools and they also manage the whole process for you so, no need to panic!

Do you start with an architect?

No, Origin does it all. They provide initial design sketches and budgetary proposals free of charge in their feasibility studies. Architects are extremely well-versed in domestic construction details, but unfortunately, an indoor pool is very different. An architect can provide an outline design for an indoor pool but this may be an unnecessary expense as many don’t have the knowledge or insurance needed to take that design further.

98 MARCH 2023 HOME & PROPERTY

Which features have the biggest impact on cost?

The most popular size for an indoor pool is between 8m to 12m as the bigger the pool, the bigger the cost. For avid swimmers, there are some excellent counter current swim devices available making the size of the pool less important. Buying a pool cover is one of the bigger investments you’ll make throughout the process but they’re worth it as an important part of the pool design. They retain heat, reduce running costs and provide a level of safety, making them a necessity rather than an option. When adding different features to your indoor swimming pool, it’s important to remember your original motivation. Did you want to create a place of relaxation?

Your own fitness centre? A social hub for friends and family?

Why Origin?

It’s simple, Origin does it all. Building pools is a specialised field, it’s unlike any other building project and requires a holistic approach with all the key elements working together from the beginning. Origin has all the design and engineering expertise necessary and manages the whole building process for you, from initial concept, planning and design

to completion and beyond, eliminating the need for you to employ separate companies. Access to a pool right on your doorstep means it’s easy to swim every day in the privacy of your own home, either to maintain a healthy lifestyle or simply as a space to relax. Origin has been building award-winning swimming pools for over 40 years and in that time has successfully completed thousands of pools and pool houses to a wide range of specifications. Whether you’re looking for indoor or outdoor, wellness or fun, Origin has experienced it all and is available to help you create your home pool managing every stage from start to finish, giving you the confidence and freedom to enjoy finally swimming in your own home.

How to refresh your home and garden for Spring

Bright, birdsong-filled mornings; sundappled afternoons; and evenings that stretch out beautifully—spring is a wonderful time of year.

It’s only natural, then, that we should want to celebrate it and capture some spring with a new look around the home.

With more than 70 years of experience designing and producing furniture, BoConcept have plenty of tips and tricks when it comes to home design. Here they share some tips on making the inside and outside of your house look its best once spring arrives.

How do I decorate my living room for Spring?

The living room often sets the tone for your whole home, so if you want to invite spring in, there’s no better place to do it.

Giving pride of place to spring flowers like dahlias and hydrangeas—in a stylish vase—will definitely bring the outdoors inside.

If you introduce some brilliantly white furniture, not only will you make the most of the spring light, but those flowers will provide a stunning splash of colour by contrast.

And carefully chosen statement furniture

can do the same. For instance, you might pair a whitewashed bookcase with a soft green or slate blue armchair. What could be better than sitting back with a book on a spring evening? Whatever additions you make to the living room, white and blue are refreshing colours for the spring. They bring to mind the sea and all things nautical, instinctively relaxing us.

How do I decorate my bedroom for Spring?

The sun floods in through your window early in the morning—and, as it sets, the sun leaves a show-stopping blend of hues in the evening. Spring certainly shows bedrooms in their best morning light.

To match nature’s mood outside, you need to make changes inside. It’s time for light colours and materials. Think linen cushions and rounded, carefree forms that verge on the bohemian— nothing too sharp. Of course, rattan furniture is a classic spring look, while lighter, distressed woods also conjure images of spring getaways.

Aside from aesthetics, however, there are practical issues to consider. First and foremost is comfort. Higher temperatures mean that you’ll want lighter, more breathable fabrics and

throws on your bed, which extends to the sheets underneath. You won’t be needing those thick, knitted blankets and rugs until the heating goes back on in autumn.

Yet you might want to go the opposite way for your curtains: sunlight flooding in at dawn isn’t always great for a good night’s rest. If you’re a light sleeper (no pun intended), blackout curtains are a must. Don’t worry, they’re not all burgundy or grey; you can find them in all kinds of lighter tones.

How should I furnish my garden for Spring?

The flowers are blooming, the weather is fresh, and you can hear wildlife all around—spring really is your garden’s time to come alive.

There are countless excuses to enjoy your garden during the spring. Perhaps you’re having friends over for the first barbecue? You could be indulging in a leisurely weekend breakfast. Or maybe you’re simply taking advantage of the weather to work from home in an outdoor lounge.

And if you can give your outdoor space a sizzling springtime makeover, you might never want to go back indoors. Here’s how to freshen up your garden after winter.

• Choose light coloured furniture

Outdoor furniture serves a whole range of purposes. It might even have to double up as dining furniture and a place to work. After all, many people now find themselves working at the kitchen table, so why not do the same outside?

Whatever you need garden furniture for, lightcoloured dining chairs, tables, and loungers suit spring vibes better. And white looks especially

good in contrast against the deep greens of garden plants, shrubs, and trees.

Don’t worry if your favourite outdoor furniture is a darker shade, though—simply swap it all back around once the cascading leaves of autumn arrive.

• Choose some fresh accessories

If you’re lucky enough to have a large outdoor space, there’s no end to the ways you can bring a springy feel to your garden. One of the most fun ways is with the addition of a beach hutstyle shed, which will be just as practical as it is Instagrammable.

If you’re thinking a little smaller than that, some understated garden lighting can really make a difference, while a firepit will add a rustic feel and keep those long spring nights going—anyone for marshmallows? Or, for a more immediate transformation, how about a new side table and a few well-positioned plant pots?

The coming of spring provides us with a welcome opportunity to change up our decor. Outside, it’s mainly about making the space as comfortable as possible—while sprinkling those whites and light shades about, if you can—so that you’ll be outdoors and taking advantage of the spring as much as possible.

Inside, too, lighter hues are the way to go: for furniture, textiles, and any other additions you might make. And if you’re looking for some further advice, BoConcept St Albans’ free interior design service can guide you on the best ways to turn your home into a place where spring lives.

THE SECRET TO A DRAMATIC KITCHEN

Combine With Wood For A Natural Style

If metal accents don’t suit your kitchen and you prefer natural finishes, A dark colour scheme looks striking next to wooden cabinetry and accessories. Adding a beautiful textural element to the design and an instant warm welcoming effect.

Add Variations of Colour

Black is a neutral shade and coordinates with almost any colour, but if you want to keep your design dark and sophisticated then layering with grey could be the right choice for you.

Go Monochrome

Looking for a kitchen design that is stylish and practical? These kitchen designs could be the perfect fit.

Darker tones for your interior design is undeniably chic and oozes drama but can also be quite calming. We spoke to leading kitchen design company Urban Myth on why they believe a dramatic scheme should have a place on your list of top kitchen colour ideas.

“You can really make a dramatic kitchen your own” says Peter Hill, Head of Sales for Urban Myth “it can be either contemporary or traditional or even a mix of both depending on how you finish the design, and there are many ways to incorporate this style into your design at a level you feel comfortable with.”

Make A Statement With Your Worktop

A statement worktop will create an impact in any style of kitchen. For example, choosing a finish with a Black marble effect is timeless and can be paired with many other colours for your kitchen cabinets, walls or floors. If you want your worktop to be the focal point then embrace the art of darkness when planning your next kitchen renovation.

Layer Up

A mix of dark tones and textures is an emerging trend that is set to be a showstopper over the coming year. It is a bold look but when done well the result is stunning. Layering black cupboards, walls and worktop for a sultry look that is full of sophistication. Adding gold or glass elements to your design will add warmth and light to your space.

Not ready to go with all dark kitchen cabinetry then a monochrome style could fit the bill. There are many finishes available where you can incorporate black into your scheme such as black hardware or taps and sinks. You could also have shelving with black frames contrasting brilliantly with white cabinet doors for an elegant nod to this growing trend.

So, if you are renovating this year playing with a palette of darker tones doesn’t have to be scary and the innovative designers at Urban Myth are ready to help you create a look you’ll love, simply make an appointment to view the Urban Myth showroom by calling 0208 531 3413 or visit urbanmyth.net for more inspiration.

Top Tile Trends 2023

The Interior Design world is a bustling, regularly changing, landscape of newly emerging dynamics. Understanding these dynamics, features and trends is a key step to creating an exciting design within a home. The Baked Tile Co. has curated this essential press release to highlight the Tile Trends that are set to take 2023 by storm, helping to guide, educate and inspire home owners when designing their dream home.

TERRACOTTA

We saw this organic style tile emerge a little while ago and demand continues to grow - the trend ‘Terracotta Bathroom’ has risen 98% in the last 12 months on Pinterest, and nearly 50% for ‘Terracotta Kitchens’!

Suitable for a number of interior styles, terracotta has a rustic natural appeal, but traditional style terracotta also comes with a lot of maintenance. Baked Tiles have sourced a wonderful collection of terracotta-effect porcelain that boasts all the aesthetic beauty of natural terracotta, but with none of the laborious sealing or treatment. Furthermore, natural terracotta isn’t suitable for use in UK gardens, but all Baked Tiles terracotta ranges are also frost proof, so perfect for creating beautiful garden schemes.

TOP TIP: Use wide joints for a rustic traditional aesthetic, or tighter joints for a more ‘Moroccan vibe’

MURAL DESIGNS

As pattern is becoming more coveted within general interiors, mural designs are now taking centre stage in beautiful bathrooms and kitchens. Thanks to

advances in tile production, you can now use large scale flowing pattern in wet areas, and some are even suitable for external use due to their frost proof qualities. This increase in production has led to a noticeable increase in demand - the ‘mural wall tile’ trend has flown up a staggering 135% over the last 12 months on Pinterest!

TOP TIP: To really make a mural POP, pair with a tile that contrasts with the background for prominence

BORDERS, CORNERS AND MOULDINGS

Next year, interior schemes will be all about the detail. A fresh idea for those home designers under a certain age and a memory provoking flashback for those of us who remember the trend in the 90s. The same applies to tile design, we are seeing a glorious selection of tiles with coordinating or matching borders, corners and mouldings, all designed to add additional detailing.

Unmistakably nostalgic, this is a great way to add traditional or period style into a home. Following swiftly behind the popularity of timber panelled

SMALL FORMATS

For far too long we were limited to 40x40cm, 30x60cm and 60x60cm sized tiles - but now design trends have moved on and embraced more traditional small format tiles. 15x15cm floor tiles are all the rage, they can be used to great effect on their won, or when combined with other small formats like 5x15cm brick shaped designs. Many designers are delighted to be introducing more intricate tiling schemes with the use of smaller sized, porcelain, terracotta effect and glazed product.

TOP TIP: ‘Use small format plain tiles to add detail and texture to a space, without having to rely on pattern.’

walls, we are about to see a return of wallpaper borders, elements that can be used to layer pattern within a design scheme.

TOP TIP: Use borders to define feature areas, such as a tiled panel behind a range cooker, or to produce a rug effect within an open plan space

LIGHT, BUT NOT WHITE!

If you love light filled, bright interior schemes, maybe this is the one for you. As an antidote to maximalist style, more designers are moving towards softer lighter schemes, but the secret to this trend is to use ivories and very pale peachy tones - stay well away from bright white! Think soft warm matt whites, bleached pale terracotta tones, or pale ivories.

Layer texture, and contrast gloss and matt finishes to creating interesting bathroom or cloakroom schemes. The demand of homerenovators seeking a minimalistic aesthetic has rocketed in recent times, with Pinterest highlighting a whopping 180% rise in searches

for ‘minimal living room’ and ‘minimalist home’ together. Proof that less really is more…

TOP TIP: ‘When creating paler colour schemes, ensure you have layers of light colour and texture. If you match everything in the room perfectly, the results will be a flat uninteresting scheme’

COLOURED GROUT

Heck, why not go for it? Who wants white or grey grouts, when there is the huge collection of 50 colours available to the home designer from Baked Tiles?! Use contrasting grouts to add colour, highlighting tiling layouts or interesting shaped tiles. Use the gap between your tiles to bring in extra detail and punchy colour to a room. Take the opportunity use it as a design detail, rather than just an understated and inevitable space between your tiles.

TOP TIP: ‘When using coloured grout remember the smaller the tile, the more impact the grout will have on the look of the overall space. Coloured grout used on really tiny tiles can sometimes change the perceived colour of the tile...so be aware!’

STRIPES

Have you noticed the return of small-scale prints, striped and checks within traditional homes? Pretty, detailed interior schemes require a dainty approach to tile specification and combining coloured tiles to create pretty stripes in one perfect option. Don’t just take our word for itLiving Etc magazine confirmed that ‘adding stripes and depth leads to further texture’ elevates your dynamic home design...

TOP TIP: Striped layouts also give you the opportunity to add height to low ceiling, by running stripes vertically or width to a narrow wall by running them horizontally, pretty and design savvy!

LIVING COPPER Adds a Dazzling New Dimension to Swadling Brassware

Anew arrival to the Swadling Brassware family provides a contemporary twist on classic shower fittings.

Living Copper adds an intriguing extra option alongside more established favourite finishes, such as chrome and brass. Putting copper in the spotlight – instead of its usual role as concealed pipework – the new collection delivers a truly different dimension in colour and tone. Its opulent pinkish hue is at once eye-catching yet understated, transforming the look and feel of any bathroom space.

Living Copper adds instant warmth to a bathroom and works beautifully in both contemporary and traditional bathroom designs. It complements warm pastels and offers a wonderful contrast to cool, light marble surfaces and looks particularly striking against a dark tiled backdrop.

As the name suggests, Living Copper has a living quality that changes and evolves over time, contributing to its unique appearance. The uncoated copper will oxidize into a finish

known as a patina, which protects the metal from corrosion. Each piece of Living Copper reacts uniquely to its environment, ageing gracefully and developing its own character and variations in tone over time.

1 - Instead of placing furniture – especially sofa’s against a wall, consider that the best layout for a cosy and convivial entertaining space, might be to bring the furniture into the middle of the room, creating an intimate seating arrangement with console tables and sideboards used against the walls with table lamps and candles

2 - If you can see your workstation, it will be a constant reminder of work, so ideally create a home office separate to your main living area. If this isn’t possible, consider bringing in a decorative screen or curtain to make sure you are separating your work life from your home life

3 - Injecting your personality into a space doesn’t necessarily mean choosing a bold wall colour. Colour can come from simple dressings such as a collection of coffee table books from favourite destinations or inspirational garden designers, which will also remind you of your favourite past times and memories. Colourful rugs, cushions and paintings give warmth and texture and also help with the sound of voices and are easily changed if you tire of them

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

4 - Use as many table lamps – ideally in pairs, as possible in a room. An average sized living room should ideally have 4 lamps, but we have used as many as ten in a large space. It creates the opportunity to zone areas at night, and are especially useful for reading. The softness of the lamp is far more ambient for a relaxing evening than overhead or wall lights which can strain tired eyes

5 - Embrace natural daylight wherever possible. Arrange your space to gain the most from the available natural light. A dining table in the brightest part of the room will encourage you to sit there during the day time as opposed to at a breakfast bar, likewise with a comfortable chair and small table next to it, for a sunshine filled pause in the day with a cuppa and a view of the garden

6 - Use as much of the height of the room as possible. Try to keep everything from finishing at the height of the sofas and table lamps. Encouraging the eye upwards with the use of tall mirrors behind sofa’s and a feature chandelier on the ceiling will make the space feel much grander and properly dressed rebeccaclarkinteriors.com

Charley Chau’s Faroe

The Best and Most Practical Fabric For a Dog to Go to Bed with This Winter

With all the warmth and depth of wool, but without the maintenance headache, the brilliant Faroe fabric was an instant hit with customers of luxury dog bedding company Charley Chau when it debuted on the brand’s Bliss Bolster Bed in 2020. Three years on, Faroe has now spun its way onto even more Charley Chau Beds, meaning there’s a snuggly bedfellow to keep every dog warm and cosy this winter.

Available across Charley Chau’s signature pocket-style Snuggle Dog Bed in Classic and Winter Warmer styles, the Bliss Bolster Bed, Day Bed Mattress and Anti-Microbial Memory Foam

Dog Bed Mattress, it is now freshly launched as Bed Bumper Sets for Crates and Rattan Baskets. In its latest presentation, Faroe is now bringing all the snugly feels to turn a cold, unwelcoming dog crate into a cosy little den, and giving the enduringly timeless rattan dog basket a luxe makeover.

But why is Faroe so utterly fabulous for dogs and their dwellings, and especially in winter? Despite being soft, warm and inviting touch, Faroe is a tough canine cookie that is more than capable of withstanding the paces of daily dog use. Tough enough for heavy commercial upholstery use, with a Martindale Rub Test Score of 100,000, Faroe surpasses the entry level rub score of 30,000 for

‘commercial grade’ fabrics.

As well as being hardy, the fibres used to weave Faroe have also been treated with a permanent stainguard treatment, which means surface dirt never gets the chance to get a proper hold in the fabric. In the winter months when weather is inclement and muddy paws frequent, the stainguard feature becomes extremely beneficial, as it means the fabric can be easily spot cleaned in between washes. Additionally, Faroe’s moisturewicking and quick drying properties means moisture is wicked away from wet dog’s coat and the fabric dries out quickly, so a dog is less likely to suffer a consistently damp bed.

Handling dog hair is a breeze for Faroe too. Thanks to its tight weave, the amount of hair that works its way into the fabric itself is reduced and what remains is easily removed with a quick shake or a light hoover over.

For a clean and pristine dog bed and hygiene in the home, all of Charley Chau’s Faroe range features fully removeable covers that can go into the washing machine on a 30° to 40° cycle, dependent on the style of bed, with the fabric washing beautifully time after time.

With prices from £85 cosy up a four-legged friend’s bed with Faroe this winter at Charleychau.com and see dogs sleeping in sublime comfort @Charleychau on socials.

TYE ARCHITECTS : Case study

Settled in the open countryside in Buckinghamshire this house is nestled in a secluded rural location, reflecting its surroundings of mature woodland. The setting and elegant simplicity were paramount to the design of this house.

The brief was to provide a dwelling which responds to its context in materiality. A simple palette of carefully selected materials includes the use of stone from the earth on the lower level and timber on the floating box of the upper level, enhanced by a green tinted series of panels to provide transparency and reflect the surrounding plot-scape.

With clean geometric lines, the floating first floor cantilevers and balances on the ground floor, providing long reaching views from the master bedroom and several short distance views of the plot from the other bedrooms. This architectural element pulls you into the site and allows you to marvel at its geometry and weightlessness.

The lower floor is grounded by the strong stone element; the roofing detail of the first floor floats, gliding with the frameless glazing.

Approaching the house, the glass enhances the large open spaces. The open plan ground floor connects from the front entrance area through to the rear garden and a horizontal expanse of glazing connects the rear living spaces to the garden-scape to the rear.

Vertical electronically controlled louvres to the windows provide solar shading and privacy shading

to the bedrooms. Wooden sliding door panels, some recessed and hidden in the walls allow for areas to be discretely closed off. The house is fully equipped with a home cinema room and an outdoor amphitheatre. A sunroom in the garden provides an area for outdoor living where you can sit outside in a sheltered area at different times of the day and enjoy the views of the house and the landscaped garden.

This project is energy efficient and environmentally friendly with ground source heat pumps providing the heating and hot water. To further reduce the carbon footprint, the house is also equipped with solar panels and low energy lighting.

This dwelling was designed to create an elegant, contemporary family home with an open plan layout that is an environmentally sustainable, contextually relevant and timeless concept. tyearchitects.com
