Our Chamber’s public policy team has compiled detailed summaries of legislative outcomes in each state, aligning with our key priorities. Legislative policies impact us all; the more informed and engaged our Chamber members are, the stronger our voice becomes. Shannon Full President & CEO Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of CommerceAs Director of Leadership, I am responsible for developing and implementing leadership programs for working profes sionals in the community. Currently, that means overseeing all aspects of The Chamber’s leadership program (Leadership FMWF ) and working with various committees who recruit, plan and engage participants in each Leadership FMWF session. In addition, I get to work with Young Professionals Network (YPN) to bring the FMWF community the annual Corporate Cup event! As a member of the Events & Programs Team at The Chamber, I also get to assist my colleagues with their various programs and events – it makes every day at work different and it’s the best!
I love the people I get to work with! From the Chamber staff to the committee members, I can truly say that I’m excited to come to work every day. It’s so fun walking into work or meetings and having folks that care about me, my family and my life around me. It’s unique to have a workplace where everyone buys into the culture and not only “talks the talk” on how great the culture is, but truly “walks the walk.”
I also love the creativity in this role – the Chamber is ever evolving and growing and it’s an honor to be a part of it! I’m encouraged to bring forth new ideas and love feeling supported to see them through. Whether we are session planning for the Leadership program or producing new ideas for the future of leadership development in the community, I love the opportunity to research best practices then put my spin on it. In the two short months I’ve been with The Chamber, my creative wheels have been turning, and I’m excited to bring more leadership development opportunities to the FMWF area - The future is bright!
I love all things people, coffee, summer and having fun! My day job is Director of Leadership, but my night job is making memories with my family and friends. My husband, Mitch, and I love sports and going on walks with our kiddos. We have three sons who keep us busy with imaginative play and general mischief. Summer is my favorite season because we get to be outside, the sun shines into the night and there’s always fun to be had.
My current obsession is attempting to keep my small garden alive that I planted way too late into the season. It’s a fun adventure, as the kids and I get down in the dirt to pick weeds and find worms. When we aren’t adventuring within our community, we love to spend time at the lake – I say I’m my best self near the water! The ideal summer weekend would include early morning coffee on the dock, followed by a full day anchored out on the pontoon. Who doesn’t love a cooler packed with snacks and drinks, music, water and fun with family and friends? Hope that helps you get to know me a little more – I can’t wait to meet you at the next Chamber event!

June 20 marked The Chamber’s 12th annual Military Appreciation Night at the RedHawks. On this sunny day, families enjoyed a complimentary picnic, fun with balloon and tattoo artists and inflatables for children!
Molly Gilbert and her two daughters, Lydia (7) and Emersyn (3) set the stage by throwing the first honorary pitch for the Redhawks on this special evening.
Molly and her daughters are keeping busy while husband and father, Joe Gilbert, is away for military deployment. Joe is a Staff Sergent with the 191 Military Police. The family enjoys spending time together at the lake, but of course, it isn’t the same without Joe there. The family has a paper chain counting down the days until Joe returns home, ready for a pontoon ride.
The Chamber prioritizes and supports its local service members and their families. Because Molly and her girls were ready and willing to help out and throw the honorary first pitch, we at The Chamber thought we would do something kind in return to boost their spirits while Joe is away.
Before Molly, Lydia and Emersyn threw the first pitch, our announcer asked the stadium to bring their attention to the video board for a special message. It was Joe. After working with the Minnesota Army National Guard, The Chamber was able to get a video from Joe to play on screen at Military Appreciation Night as a way to thank the Gilberts for throwing the first pitch.
Specialist Elijah O’Sullivan, a member of the North Dakota National Guard’s 188th Army Band, sang the National Anthem at the event.

May 25, 2023 - What a fantastic day at Minnesota State University Moorhead! Thank you to all of the teams for coming out to enjoy the day, and a special thank you goes out to our volunteers and sponsors for making this event possible.
The Midwest plays a critical role in agriculture. As an agricultural hub that the world relies on for essential crops, livestock, equipment and other products, it is vital to have conversations that convene leaders and policymakers to promote and protect this sector. The Chamber organizes the annual Midwest Agriculture Summit to inform community members and drive conversation to influence the agriculture sector.
June 6, community members gathered at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds to hear from experts and policymakers from across the region and nation as they unpacked, discussed and took an in-depth look at the dynamic facets of the agricultural sector, including policies and pressing issues. Not only was this event available to the FMWF Metro, but it was also available via livestream, bringing in virtual attendees from across the country to listen to and watch this important event.
Dr. Walter Kemmsies opened as keynote speaker for the 2023 Midwest Agriculture Summit. Kemmsies laid the groundwork by introducing his presentation on What Matters Most to U.S. Agriculture. Kemmsies used his time on stage to clarify the mixed messages that often float around the topics of the U.S. economy, inflation and workforce.
Dr. Greg Lardy moderated the Farm Bill Panel as Dr. Scott Brown and Collin Peterson shared the importance of working together when it comes to the legislative process. It has been extremely vital to get folks concerned about nutrition to be on board with policies outlined within the farm bill, as there have been issues in the past getting the two on the same page for farm policy needs.
“You can’t get a farm bill done without bipartisan support,” Peterson explained. “You can’t do farm policy without having both parties at the table.” Because the debt ceiling is being addressed in a new bill, the likelihood of the farm bill getting done in 2023 is higher, as the debt ceiling bill helps nutrition programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) expand their funding. This is great news for the agriculture sector, because, as Peterson later explained, “SNAP and nutrition need to be aligned to the farm bill for it to succeed.”
COLLIN PETERSON Former U.S. RepresentativeWhen asked about the programs making the most significant impact on the farm bill, Peterson said, “Crop insurance. Crop insurance. Crop insurance. I think there is no question in our part of the world that that is the safety net. That has been probably the most important thing our farmers rely on.”
Dr. Scott Brown and Collin Peterson greatly advocated for our Midwestern farmers, as they discussed and dissected the need for crop insurance to be properly implemented into the Farm Bill. The two dove into the intricacies of the varying climates of the United States and their different needs for safety nets, the volatile shifts we see in the agricultural markets, and other factors that can make it difficult to find a one-size-fits-all solution.

“This is an opportunity to put this region in a super charge position and to maintain that level of low-cost production agriculture, as well as position us globally as far as being a technology leader.”
President & CEO Montana Chamber of CommerceT
odd O’Hair, Montana Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Todd’ O’Hair and RDO Equipment Co. President of Field Technology, Adam Gilbertson drove conversation around the future of North Dakota technology and agriculture. The pair discussed how North Dakota and Montana each have strengths that together would position the two states well when it comes to agriculture and technology.
“This is an opportunity to set the new course for how we will be competitive in the United States, how we will be competitive globally,” claimed Gilbertson. “While I’m a native of the Red River Valley - grew up in this area, went to college here, came through the ROTC program at NDSU, I actually live in Billings, Montana.”
He continued on say, “Being able to partner in this effort together, bringing the state’s together, and working ith a number of business across the region is a pretty exciting thing for us all to be involved in.”
Following O’Hair and Gilbertson, the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) panel took the stage to discuss ESG in our region. Panelists included Jared Knock, Business
Developer at AgSpire; Michael Reese, Director at the West Central Research and Outreach Center; Kayla Ver Helst, Sustainability Office at Bank of North Dakota; and moderator, Jeff Schmidt, Chief Risk Officer for AgCountry.
The panel explored the multifaceted aspects of ESG, including challenges and opportunities presented for businesses across various sectors.
To close out the event, Collin Peterson returned to the stage with USDA Undersecretary, Xochitl Torres Small, to discuss rural development and the diversity of rural America. From affordable housing to high speed internet, Torres Small dove into the various facets of rural development needs and shared her thoughts on just how to serve this demographic.
“So much of what we do relies on having a relationship with you.”

The Chamber was proud to partner with Grand Farm and Bushel to bring AgTech Week to the FMWF region from June 5 to 9. The week started with a VIP social at the RDO Tower that included speakers and sponsors of the Midwest Ag Summit, elected officials, leadership from our educational institutions and additional agriculture partners from the region. We were also honored to welcome a delegation from Montana to our community for the
week, as our two states formalize a Headwaters Tech Hub partnership to position our region as a national and global leader in technology.
After The Chamber’s Midwest Agriculture Summit, the week continued strong with Bushel’s Buddy Seat Conference and Grand Farm’s Cultivate Conference. Agriculture is a cornerstone of the Midwest’s economy, history and future vitality, and we look forward to building upon these strong partnerships to
not only showcase how the FMWF area is leading in Ag and AgTech, but to promote continued innovation, growth and prosperity in the sector.

Join us for an uplifting afternoon dedicated to celebrating all that we have accomplished together over the past year, recognizing and thanking our countless volunteers and looking ahead to what the next year has in store. It’s a time to reflect, celebrate, laugh and network with community champions and Chamber volunteers as we also make time to honor our Legacy Leader.
Each year, the Legacy Leader Award is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to the community. We will be announcing the 2023 Legacy Leader soon! Many of you will certainly know who this year’s recipient is, and for those of you who don’t, you will be blown away by their contributions to our great community.
The Chamber announced the 2023 ChamberChoice award winners at the annual award ceremony on Friday, May 19. The ChamberChoice Awards recognize the best of the best when it comes to businesses in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo area. These organizations are making a significant impact, driving economic growth and creating a unique, competitive and vibrant region for us all to live, work and do business in.
For the 2023 ChamberChoice Awards, we brought in a dynamic duo to take us through this year’s unforgettable awards show. Throughout the afternoon, Piela and Karn led the show with great energy and fun through their skits, commentary and ability to make the audience laugh.
This year’s Small Business of the Year, The Pines Wedding and Events, was founded with a passion for design and unique social experiences. Within three short years, this small business hosted hundreds of weddings and events, won multiple awards and was ready to expand. So, in 2022, The Pines unveiled the finished product of Pines Black, which is another venue available on site. This update also included site-wide property improvements.
With the additional on-site venue, The Pines has found success through increased bookings and referred clientele. As a result, overall revenue and profitability have seen consistent growth year to year. With the addition of Pines Black came an opportunity to double the Pines’ event capacity, making it the region’s best and largest capacity wedding venue property.
Not only did capacity grow, but so did the need for enhanced staffing structure and operational procedures. The Pines expanded their staff in order to focus on client acquisition, enhanced marketing and an unparalleled customer experience. The Pines takes great pride in their remarkable team and the reputation they have formed.
Like many businesses, The Pines faced adversity during the COVID-19 pandemic, because their venue is known for having high capacities and bringing large groups of people together. Facing this adversity with grace, The Pines consulted each client and allowed flexibility to move dates, assisted with re-envisioning events and sometimes even added a second date to give client’s the opportunity to celebrate their big day at a later time.
The Pines has been voted the Best Wedding and Event Venue of the Red River Valley four years in a row, claiming the title in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. The Pines has left an impact on the local wedding and event industry, following their goal and mission to “Build Experiences That Last a Lifetime.”

Your 2023 Non-profit of the year, GiGi’s Playhouse Fargo, is North Dakota’s only Down Syndrome Achievement Center offering customized, research-based programming that is geared specifically to the way individuals with Down syndrome learn best.
GiGi’s mission is to increase positive awareness of Down syndrome through national campaigns, educational and therapeutic programs, resources and by empowering individuals of all ages with Down syndrome, as well as their families and the community.
Since 2015, GiGi’s has positively impacted the lives of over 206 families and individuals with direct support and intentional programming.
In May of 2021, GiGi’s met devastation, as their center and all optimal learning resources were lost to a fire. What they didn’t lose - was hope.
Despite losing their facility and resources, the team was mission-driven to support its families and share their story, with the community’s support, to help rebuild.
There were over 4,000 unique donors that supported the rebuild after the loss of the center, and 37% of those donors were new to the organization, believing in their mission and efforts to fulfill the lifetime commitment to the families they serve.
Prior to the 2021 fire, GiGi’s welcomed 38 unique families a month. After reopening their doors in October of 2022, in an inspiring comeback after the fire, GiGi’s welcomed 13 new families and supported 65 total unique families each month with over 3,500 volunteer hours being contributed to the success of programs, operations and rebuilding efforts. Ninety seven percent of the organization’s work is accomplished through the hard work and dedication of volunteers.
Thanks to the tenacity of GiGi’s Playhouse and those in our community who have dedicated their time and talents to this organization, individuals with Down syndrome and their families can achieve their greatest potential with confidence, independence and joy.

It is clear that AdShark Marketing is a great pick for our 2023 ChamberChoice Young Professionals Best Place to Work.
Lumen Vision was founded in 2020 by Dr. Ryan Capouch, Fellowship-Certified Pediatric and Vision Therapy Optometrist.
Previously, Dr. Capouch trained in family practice and pediatric optometry and found his passion for developmental optometry, a branch
of eye care that treats school-aged children, athletes and brain injury patients. His desire to help patients meet their potential, alongside the increasing demand for his unique approach to vision therapy, led to the creation of Lumen Vision.
This small but mighty business has nine full time employees who put in great work, performing an average of exams, glasses sold and vision therapy at a rate within the 99th percentile of all vision therapy and pediatric clinics in the entire country.
Lumen’s unique approach to vision therapy treatment has garnered attention in the region because of their ability to complete treatment in less than half the average treatment time.
Lumen has a bright team with a priority placed on culture and employee relations.
Lumen’s mission is to help children and their families build a brighter future through comprehensive eye care and optometric vision therapy. Dr. Capouch’s philosophy is that a happy team makes happy clients. Dr. Capouch knows how valuable his team is and strives to show his appreciation for not only the important work his team is doing, but for the amazing people they are.
Businesses face challenges every day, but what sets a business apart is its ability to overcome those challenges and succeed.
This year’s ChamberChoice Resilient Business, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota (BCBSND), has demonstrated their ability to go above and beyond - to truly face adversity and rise above it.
Perhaps this is due to their commitment to North Dakotans, whereas they strive to provide a new level of health and well-being across the state. Whether it’s an everyday meeting or a significant decision, the team at BCBSND always challenges themselves by asking, “How does this serve our members and the overall health and well-being of North Dakota?”
By leaning into their mission, vision statements and six corporate values of integrity, effective collaboration, service excellence, constant innovation, responsible stewardship and enthusiasm – this business stays grounded to their purpose and decision-making strategies.
BCBSND has adapted to a changing work environment and taken major steps to embrace this shift. This is proven through the sharing of their Fargo headquarters with sister company, Noridian Healthcare Solutions. This consolidation of space has not only led to reduced expenses, but increased collaboration and support between the two companies.
Another significant, yet successful, change for the company has been the implementation of a longterm hybrid workplace model, whereas their staff can embrace change and thrive in whichever environment makes them the most productive. Employees report feeling happier and retention rates have increased due to this change.
BCBSND has also implemented a plan to bring about a solution for those who find themselves facing rising medical costs while seeing limited improvements in health. BlueAlliance fundamentally changes the way we finance health care. Instead of paying fees for every service, this program allows providers to be compensated for care outcomes, which refocuses the model on the value of care rather than volume of care.
By continually revisiting their structure and strategies, BCBSND has overcome many challenges and is equipped to continue to do so, all while preparing for an exciting and effective future, whereas they won’t let anything rain on their parade.
Cultural Diversity Resources (CDR) was established in 1994 by community leaders as a proactive regional diversity initiative in response to increased ethnically diverse populations, predominantly refugees resettled in Cass County.
Prior to CDR, there were no existing organizations or programs that addressed both the opportunities and challenges that come along with creating an inclusive community that serves our growing ethnically diverse populations.
CDR’s vision is to build communities that value diversity and inclusion, which perfectly aligns with the heart of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Award.
Not only is it stated in CDR’s name and vision that they are a DEI organization, but it is also represented in their everyday work.
CDR’s multi-ethnic leadership development provides local businesses and the community with opportunities to connect and utilize the expertise, skills and talents of our increasingly diverse workforce.
CDR provides customized diversity training, as well as programs that improve knowledge, skills and self-esteem for individuals in poverty to help them gain jobs and become financially literate and selfsufficient.
In 2022, CDR partnered with Neighborhood Development Center of the Twin Cities to conduct entrepreneurship training for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, also referred to as BIPOC. This entrepreneurship training provides guidance for starting small businesses in the Fargo-Moorhead area in collaboration with local small business associations.
CDR works alongside community partners to pursue educational activities related to diversity and inclusion, such as diversity training for the general public, financial literacy education, bilingual interpretation, cultural events, as well as organizational capacity building, training and mentoring opportunities.
CDR has been a key player in the FMWF area, being awarded and recognized for its excellence in diversity and inclusive activities contributing to high quality of life. CDR’s dedication to being Diverse, Equitable and Inclusive really shines, and that is why they are deserving of this year’s DEI Award.
You voted – you decided. This year’s People’s Choice Award Winner is Go Promo - a partner who helps organizations, businesses and schools promote themselves through the creative use of imprinted apparel and promotional products.
For Go Promo, brand awareness is the name of the game. They are dedicated to helping their clients build and elevate their brands through custom company web stores with warehousing and fulfillment, screen printed and embroidered apparel, company swag and so much more.
Go Promo’s guiding principles allow them the ability to provide brand-boosting promotional solutions that strengthen relationships between brands and their target audiences.
This brand boosting, swag-selling and creative promotion agency has exceeded their sales goals every year since they were founded in 2012. With fewer than 15 employees, Go Promo’s sales performance has been phenomenal and is unheard of in the industry!
By positioning themselves as a partner rather than a vendor, Go Promo has truly developed long-lasting relationships with their clients in our community. It’s no secret Go Promo is committed to their clients. They provide over the top customer service to the point that they end up befriending their clients outside of the workplace.
Like many successful businesses, Go Promo has had to face their own adversity. For example, this business has grown exponentially in the last 10 years, and as a result, they had to learn to balance a heavy workload with limited employees.
Not to worry, this tenacious team committed to investing in automated systems to track warehoused inventory on web stores and devising internal systems to keep track of jobs in production – this has provided a great lift off the shoulders of this limited staff.
Go Promo has an unwavering commitment to maintaining a healthy work-life balance and flexibility for employees. Being that the company was founded by two brothers, it is no surprise that Go Promo has such a commitment to its team members, their families and the community.
By empowering employees to be creative and think outside the box, they have a direct impact on the FMWF community. Whether it be presenting a check to Landon’s Light Foundation, cheering on the West Fargo Packers or handing out t-shirts for a fundraiser – they are doing work that matters and leaving an impact on our community!
Establishing itself as a committed community partner and a strong small business, Go Promo has earned its place as the 2023 People’s Choices Award winner!
For more than three decades, Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo (LFMWF) has been instrumental in fostering the growth and influence of individuals who shape and transform the community through their unwavering commitment and service. Folkways is a community-based organization dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging, economic growth and community vitality through the creation of immersive experiences and collaborations. Folkways is known for organizing events such as the Red River Market, Night Bazaar and Christkindlmarkt. Folkways also runs a program called CampusFM, which aims to inspire passion within students for the FM+ area and encourage them to start their careers here after graduation. CampusFM showcases the opportunities and unique experiences in the area, providing students with the tools and resources they need to achieve their career goals.
The Intern Experience runs June through August – if you’re interested in participating in the 2024 cohort, please contact Folkways at info@folkways.org.
Folkways values peer-driven community content and interactions, recognizing the importance of meeting students where they are and tailoring their approach to their unique needs. They are committed to building a strong sense of community among students and providing them with resources and support. They believe that by fostering an inclusive and collaborative community, they can empower students to develop the skills and relationships necessary for success in their chosen career paths. One of the ways they do this is through a CampusFM Internship called the Creatorship. The Creatorship is a comprehensive 10-week program aimed at honing students' abilities. The program provides in-depth training on using social media as a potent tool for communication, community engagement and marketing. In a similar vein, Folkways has reintroduced the Intern Experience. This program aligns perfectly with their mission to fortify community bonds, facilitate learning and pave the way for student success.
The Intern Experience, originated by Emerging Prairie, is an enriching 10-week skill development program. Businesses can enroll their interns in this immersive journey to provide them with a fulfilling and enriching internship experience that equips them for future success. With weekly two-hour sessions, interns can expect to build professional skills, navigate real-world challenges and gain valuable insights from industry professionals. The program focuses on fostering a strong sense of community, setting and achieving SMART goals, managing time effectively, navigating ambiguity, embracing feedback and honing emotional intelligence, all while offering opportunities to network with local leaders and envision life as a young professional. This immersive journey is dedicated to equipping interns with the necessary tools and connections for career and personal success, thereby strengthening company culture, boosting performance and contributing to the local economy. Folkways partners with Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation and Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce (FMWF Chamber) to bring this transformative experience to life.
This is Sophia Richards. You may remember her from her time with us at The Chamber! Sophia served as a social media and content creation intern with The Chamber for two semesters. She will be graduating from NDSU this year with her bachelor’s degree in strategic communication.
While at The Chamber, Richards assisted with social media work, event photography, writing and photo and video editing. Richards explained that she enjoyed her time at The Chamber, as she was given an opportunity to grow and learn, as well as impact the community. “Getting to create social media content for The Chamber was my favorite aspect of my role,” Richards explained. “The Chamber’s amazing professional development and networking opportunities and educational events are so important to the community, and getting to share that with our followers and members was extremely impactful.”
Within her role at The Chamber, Richards claimed that it really prepared her for her next step in the professional landscape. “I learned how to conduct myself as a young professional, how to take direction and how to network and communicate with people,” Richards said. “I even met my new boss at a Business After Hours event, which happened to be my favorite networking event.” Not only did she learn professional skills, but she also had the opportunity to hone in on her stage presence, conducting interviews with Chamber members and event sponsors, which was great practice for her new role.
Richards now serves as host and producer of North Dakota Today, the morning show for Valley News
Live in Fargo. Within this role, she researches ideas for live segments and gets them across the finish line, interviewing guests, filming content and producing the show. When asked about her favorite part of her job, Richards said, “getting to highlight all of the amazing events, organizations and individuals in our community by featuring them on the show.”
Looking ahead to the future, Richards hopes to complete The Chamber’s FMWF Leadership program to take her professional development, connections and community impact to the next level. YOU CAN LEARN MORE ABOUT LEADERSHIP FMWF ON PAGE 38. When asked if she were to offer any advice to current interns who aspire to achieve success mirroring her own, Richards encourages that interns, “work hard and make connections,” She stated, “Part of being an intern is seeing how well you fit in with the work culture and making an effort to get to know your coworkers is a big aspect of that.”
Having interns at your company is a great opportunity for businesses and young adults alike. The Chamber proudly hires interns each year to assist with the vital work it takes to serve the community. Richards was part of The Chamber’s internship program for several months and she hopes to see more businesses adopting internship programs for young adults. “Having an intern program is extremely rewarding for both the company and the interns,” Richards explained. “Interns can bring ideas and an extra set of helping hands to your business. Who doesn’t need that?”
It is our belief that a community influenced by young professionals is a community that attracts and retains them. The core to the Young Professionals Network’s strategic agenda is the belief that the more informed, involved and networked young professionals are, the more influence they will have on the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo community. This network is home to the leaders and influencers of tomorrow.
Through the Young Professionals Network, you have the opportunity to meet people you would never
otherwise have met, learn about businesses you never would have known about and participate in events that never would have known existed. You have access to numerous business training programs and can learn about the happenings in the community that will have an impact on your life.
Young Professionals Network hosts various events throughout the year, such as networking events like Lattes with Leaders and Morning Buzz, as well as one of The Chamber’s biggest events of the year - CORPORATE CUP!

An initiative to transform ag economic development and solve global food challenges
The Chamber is participating in a groundbreaking AgTech innovation partnership.
The Chamber is joining forces with NDSU, Grand Farm and the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation (GFMEDC) to be the Northern Plains AgTech Engine for Food Systems Adapted for Resiliency and Maximized Security (FARMS).
On June 14, The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that FARMS is one of 34 semifinalists in the competition from an original pool of 188 projects that span nearly all key technology areas and societal and economic challenges highlighted in the CHIPS and Science Act.
The primary objective of the FARMS proposal is to optimize and leverage the existing agricultural opportunities and the AgTech ecosystem in North Dakota to best address global food challenges. The project will work to offset a diminishing agricultural workforce by improving farming efficiencies, maintaining/increasing yields, reducing environmental impacts and enhancing ecosystems services.
Submitted in early 2023, the proposal aims to accelerate economic development in agriculture while focusing on issues such as food security and production for a rapidly growing global population. Partnerships, including those with North Dakota higher education institutions, are featured prominently and include United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) and Nueta Hidatsa
Sahnish College from the North Dakota Tribal College System (NDTCS); University of North Dakota, Bismarck State College and North Dakota State College of Science from the North Dakota University System (NDUS). Private sector and government partnerships were also key components of the project.
Executive Director of The FMWF Chamber Foundation, Jenna Mueller, is co-lead for education and workforce development on the project and brings expertise running the federal Good Jobs Challenge. “Our region boasts a wealth of AgTech Innovation pioneers, yet the prospect of nurturing and propelling their expertise, while equipping present and upcoming talents to become global frontrunners, is truly exhilarating. This endeavor will not only bolster North Dakota’s workforce and economic development but also cement its position as a leading force in the AgTech landscape,” Mueller said. “The project’s inclusive vision will lead to equitable agricultural opportunities for New Americans, Tribal citizens, veterans and others.”
Joining Mueller as co-lead in this area is NDSU Professor and Chair of NDSU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Leon Schumacher.
Grand Farm Director Brian Carroll and GFMEDC Chief Business Development Officer Ryan Aasheim are co-leading stakeholders and partnerships. NDSU Professor and genomicist Phillip McClean will serve as the Research and Development lead. ND EPSCoR Executive Director Jolynne Tschetter will lead the process of working with industry partners on commercializing research. NDSU Associate Professor Hollie Mackey and NDSU Director of Tribal Partnerships Sheridan McNeil will co-lead the involvement of Tribal Colleges, Universities and Tribal communities, incorporating best practices to integrate and reinforce this connection at all levels.
The NSF’s Engines program is designed to catalyze and foster innovation ecosystems throughout the U.S. Its goals include advancing critical technologies; addressing national and societal challenges; cultivating partnerships among industry, academia, government, nonprofits, civil society and communities of practice; promoting economic growth and job creation; and fostering regional innovation and talent. Engines support use-inspired research, translating innovation into practice and workforce development while prioritizing diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.

In case you missed it, on Tuesday, April 25, Kerry Petsinger took the stage to inspire and empower the Women Connect Community.
Petsinger’s routine strategies are used by Olympic athletes and other world-class peak performers to master their inner game and achieve high levels of performance without burnout.
She gave an empowering presentation that left attendees feeling inspired and excited, greatly emphasizing the importance of a
powerful morning routine. Petsinger shared the backstory of her methods, discussing how celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and athletes like Michael Phelps have also used strategies similar to hers. What was interesting was that every person she researched had commonalities in their strong sense of purpose and passion. Every single person had a power morning routine.
“Not everyone is born great, and it is through practice, precision and intentionality that people fill into who they are meant to be.”
May 23, Karla Isley presented The Power of Community. The Power of Women. to teach attendees how to uncover their potential to influence their community, touching on her personal experience growing through her professional life, the nonprofit world and volunteer work.
The presentation was highly engaging, with activities for the audience to directly practice Isley’s ideas while at the event. The main activity allowed the audience to
look within and identify their values, whereas they started off by listing 10 values. And then five. And then...one.
“When your values are clear, making decisions become easier.” Isley highlighted the importance of being able to recognize all of your values, as well as hold the ability to narrow those values down in order to make decisions based on what is most important to you.
Isley encourages you to look within to discover your values, because unveiling your power isn’t too much
Petsinger showed the Women Connect community that their mindset starts with their morning. She encourages us all to be intentional with our morning routine, for we too can live our lives feeling purpose-driven, powerful, present and productive.

May 2, The Chamber’s Eggs and Issues series welcomed the business community to learn about higher education in the state of North Dakota, as well as the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the North Dakota University System.
May Eggs and Issues brought together two presidents within the North Dakota University System –Dr. David Cook, who serves at a research university (NDSU) and Dr. Rod Flanigan, who serves at a community
college (NDSCS). While these two schools may differ in many ways, they also have many commonalities. They are producing students who meet the needs of our economy and working class. These students are the future of our workforce, so it is important to support North Dakota’s higher education and understand how vital it is to the success of our communities.
Coming this fall: Part 2 - A New Era of Higher Education in Minnesota featuring the presidents of Concordia College, M State and MSUM.
We thank each of you for your support in our mission and investment in your business and community. Please consider doing business with your fellow Chamber members first!
