The Building etc. (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2022 outlaw the use of metal composite material panels with an unmodified polyethylene core (MCM PE) as part of an overhaul of the English building regulations and associated guidance that will come into effect on 1 December 2022. This extends the restriction introduced in 2018 on the use of combustible materials on the external walls of certain buildings over 18 metres. In addition, the Tamworth-based trade association has welcomed The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, that come into effect on 23rd January 2023, whereby flat entrance fire doors are subject to annual checks and those in the common parts of High-Risk Residential Buildings (HRRB), require quarterly checks. DHF has been a long-standing advocate of the critical role that fire doors play in saving lives and protecting property and has continued to stress that the use of fire doorsets, correctly installed and with robust fire door maintenance procedures, are a vital part of fire safety. “The new requirement is that annual inspections are undertaken on flat entrance doors and quarterly checks on all fire doors in the common parts. This is the responsible person’s role, and we support this wholeheartedly; this includes, for example, gaps around the doors, as well as the hardware such as door closers,” explains
“We believe this is a long time in coming, but there are a number of benefits for our members and the industry,” Patricia continues. “Most importantly, this change will ‘raise the bar’ for safety across the sector. For our members, they are ready to embrace this change as many will be supplying the new complete fire doorsets to the installation companies, the components of which will have been tested together. If this reminder of the tragedy that happened five years ago has taught us anything, it is that third party certified complete doorsets and compartmentation is key to help minimise the spread of fire. “The announcement brings together the ‘golden thread of information’ referred to by Dame Judith Hackitt in her report, the passing down of information that is vital in ensuring that when maintaining the product, any repairs that may be required do not compromise the integrity of the fire doorset. DHF welcomes this new legislation and continues to urge those in positions of responsibility to seek the correct training with regards to inspection, installation, and maintenance of fire doorsets." She concluded, “There has been a lot of behind-the-scenes activity over the past five years, and now, I believe we are starting to see the changes coming through; we look forward to embracing them all.”

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
ONGOING GLOBAL DIFFICULTIES TEMPERED BY THE JOYS OF SUMMER TIME I’ve been getting ever more frustrated with what is going on in the world and was ready to vent my spleen….big time! I have even been lying in bed and ‘thinking’ my Page 3 contribution and was ready to let rip but now I’m really going to – why? Because John Warren’s submission on LinkedIn says it all! Don’t you just hate when someone beats you to the punch? John has stated my feelings exactly and rather than plagiarising his writing and claiming it as my own, I share his musings with you in their entirety. I suspect that I shall not be the only one to share his views: This is a political point but one with a small 'P' i.e. it's not about party politics but not entirely free of them either. It's about a point of complete frustration with the political class/clan, whatever you want to call them, regardless of the colour of their badge. The UK is facing a series of challenges, inflation, a weakening Pound, the cost of living crisis, resurgent Covid, security - Russia and the Ukraine. There is the existential crisis represented by climate change. None of this appears to matter (or perhaps enough?), our politicians are more focussed on playing politics (and other things that they really shouldn't be doing in private members clubs!) than serving you and I, the public, which is what we should remember, is what they are there to do - and why they are funded. We should be angry that standards in public life have slipped to this point. It is not what we should expect from our 'leaders', a term applied here in the loosest possible sense. The media compounds the problem. In the pursuit of a soundbite - there's no room for sensible discussion, politicians get hung out to dry over the slightest stumble. We need policy not politics, a clear sense of direction and positive goals to address real and immediate issues. To elevate politics from the gutter and to get it back to what it is meant to do - to promote positive economic and social change and provide a foundation for growth. There is a huge opportunity in construction. The Climate Change Committee highlighted the role the sector had to play in driving forward the energy efficiency of the built environment at the end of last month. The equation is simple: insulated homes = lower energy bills. Insulating homes
also drives economic growth. And most importantly, it lowers our carbon footprint and gives the UK a chance of hitting its climate change commitments. My question is, if politicians are busy playing politics, resigning, stabbing each other in the back, bouncing from one crisis to another, do they have the bandwidth to deliver on policy as well? John Warren, Director, Lasco PR and Marketing Well said, John. I said last month that that there would be more in our August edition of Glass News about the QUALICOAT UK & Ireland ‘Future-proofing Facades’ conference that took place last month and we have devoted a double page spread to the report on the conference. Of course, those involved in aluminium will be well aware of the need for robust powder coating but I, for one, was unaware of the longevity of powder coating particularly when it is to QUALICOAT specification. It could last for 80 years if properly maintained, and that maintenance could be as simple as washing down, periodically. I learned a great deal from the conference and I trust you will find the report of interest. This is the time of year when the ubiquitous ‘Out of office’ message appears on many an email, despite the travel chaos. Staycations? Possibly, but prices for hotels and holiday rentals in the UK indicate opportunism and greed. The burning question is where is the money going to be spent, given that it isn’t all being salted away ready for vast fuel bills this winter? Is it on holidays, ever rising bills or home improvements? From what I’m hearing the fenestration market is slowing down – nothing disastrous: just a move away from manic towards good to brisk. What is interesting is that the old adage of quality sells is being maintained. In this industry we seem to continue developing ever better products and innovative ones too. In fact, we often come across products entering the market that gives you that “why didn’t I think of that?” moment. The perfect example is the Ultion Keytag: the door key locatable with the Apple Find My network. Well done Nick Dutton. Definitely a coup! It seems summer is suddenly with us! There’s international sports of all types to enjoy as well as industry functions and events from racedays to the Deceuninck and VBH Golf Tournament, and all with sunshine too!. Lots to enjoy and opportunities to meet with colleagues from throughout our industry and I have to say I’m looking forward to the many industry events to come, from the Glazing Summit later this year through to the FIT Show next year.

‘IN THE FRAME’
– NAVIGATING THE FUTURE HOMES STANDARD’S IMPACT
Recent changes to building ventilation and energy efficiency requirements have created a situation in which the windows supply chain is seeking more technical assistance than ever. With this in mind, Russell Hand, Head of Products & Technical at REHAU, explores how suppliers, fabricators and installers can assist specifiers in navigating this changing regulatory landscape. The Government’s decision to codify net zero emissions targets into law in June 2019 has continued to have a major impact on all walks of life, including window specification. While the original legislation mandated that the UK be completely carbon neutral by 2050, regulations have since tightened, with the Sixth Carbon Budget of April 2021 necessitating a 76% reduction in emissions by 2035 when compared to 1990 levels. It is in this environment that updates to Future Homes Standard legislation have come into force. These uplifts to Part L and F of the Building Regulations, which deal with energy efficiency and ventilation respectively, cover projects for new dwellings and refurbishing of existing properties. The overarching aim of the changes is to ensure new homes built from 2022 will product 31% less carbon emissions. This is ahead of a further reduction – 75-80% – for residential properties constructed from 2025.
SIZEABLE OPPORTUNITIES Specifically, these updates tighten U-Values for Part L and Minimum Equivalent Air area (EQA) requirements for Part F, often making trickle vents a necessity in the latter’s case. These heightened requirements have been a major talking point for the fenestration industry since consultations were first announced. However, the fact remains that organisations further along the supply chain in the construction of new commercial projects may not be as familiar with how the regulations have impacted window design. Worse still, given the long time between the Future Homes Standard’s announcement and ongoing changes ahead of it being fully implemented, they may be looking at conflicting or even incorrect information. In this case,
unfamiliarity with the topic may result in non-compliance and potential marginal gains being lost at a time when the construction sector is under increasing pressure to decarbonise. For instance, consider recent research from the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea indicating that a third of heat produced by the central heating system in British homes is lost through the roof, walls, floor and windows. To put a price on this, this means that £1 of every £3 spent on energy goes to waste. Given skyrocketing energy bills, mitigating heat loss when constructing properties is not just a concern rooted in tightening sustainability legislation, but also a key economic consideration too. Specifiers and architects working on local authority or private housebuilding projects may therefore be missing a huge opportunity. By not fully considering windows as a vital part of the energy efficiency drive, developers may neglect a strong selling point for any future property – a key commercial consideration.
CUTTING THROUGH THE NOISE Nevertheless, given the highly detailed and extensive nature of the Future Homes Standard uplift, implementing best practice may present difficulties for specifiers and architects unfamiliar with the fenestration sector. Fabricators and installers should therefore look to get ahead of these changes in order to open up new possibilities for their business. A first step to this is fully familiarising themselves with the updates and evaluating their current portfolios to see if they meet tighter EQA and U-Value standards. For instance, this could include adapting frame options to meet Approved Document L’s requirements. As an example, the highest specification allowed for SAP calculation purposes set at 1.6W/m W/m2K and a target U-value of 1.2W/m2K has been outlined for windows and doors in new dwellings, alongside 1.4W/m2K for replacement works.
SUPPLIER SUPPORT Identifying frames meeting these requirements will be crucial to offering adequate support to supporting other organisations in the supply chain grappling with economic and legislative changes. Suppliers have a sizeable role to play in helping all parties navigate this fluctuating landscape – first and foremost, by offering market-leading materials. REHAU, for instance, has long offered the TOTAL70 window and door system, which has continued to exceed the relevant Building Regulations insofar as U-Values are concerned. Additionally, the company’s profiles have been developed to be compatible with Glazpart trickle vents, with an innovative ‘link’ to reduce draughts and direct air away from building occupants. As such, they can be specified for new-build and refurbishment installations requiring the highest possible thermal and air flow performance in line with updated, mandatory Part L and F requirements. But beyond providing effective products, it is also paramount that suppliers can assist with the understanding and implementation of any current and future updates to legislation, and how they apply to window specification.
6
CUT THROUGH THE NOISE It is with this in mind that REHAU has launched its new ‘In The Frame’ support initiative. Set up following concerns raised by the company’s technical experts about conflicting advice offering by organisations ahead of the Future Home Standard’s implementation, its aim is to cut through the REHAU’s commercial technical team are therefore available to assist with any design questions, as well as supporting the specification process and how to achieve compliance. As part of this campaign, the polymer supplier has also developed four fact sheets to help the windows industry assist architects and specifiers across local authority and housebuilding projects. These leaflets cover ventilation and energy efficiency requirements for new and refurb installations, providing a brief introduction to changes under the Future Homes Standard uplift and key metrics and accreditations to look out for. Businesses can also benefit from a free CPD to ensure their specification team fully understands how to meet new legislative requirements for windows and doors. In conclusion, it is a time of great change in the windows sector, and the effect is amplified for stakeholders who are less familiar with the industry. With commercial developers, architects and specifiers likely uncertain about how a key part of a property can assist in meeting uplifted building ventilation and energy efficiency standards, fabricators and installers can fill a key support role. In order to most effectively do so, these businesses should in turn seek out the assistance of material suppliers to help them navigate a rapidly shifting legislative landscape. In the frame On 27 June 2019, the UK became the first major economy in the world to set its net zero greenhouse gas emissions target in law. To achieve this by 2050, updates to Part L and F of the building regulations come into force as of 15 June 2022. Naturally the pace of change and ongoing debate around this has caused much disruption among the construction sector. In response, REHAU has developed four simple fact sheets as a reliable aid. A BATTLE WORTH FIGHTING
Simon Scholes
VEKA Recycling’s MD, Simon Scholes, comments on the very latest from the Environment Agency about Waste Crime and explains what the window industry needs to do to ensure it doesn’t unknowingly fall foul. Environment Agency Chief Executive, Sir James Bevan, recently gave a speech to the Let’s Recycle and Environmental Services Association event on the issue of waste crime. Several years ago, Sir James warned that waste crime was the ‘new narcotics’ because of its seriousness and because of its links to other crimes, but in this speech, he focuses on the action being taken against the criminals committing waste crime and why it’s such an important battle to fight. In his speech Sir James explained that the scale of the problem is difficult to pinpoint, but it is estimated that 18% of waste is being managed illegally at some point in its journey, which equates to 34 million tonnes of waste every year. And it’s a problem that’s getting worse.
DECIPHER FACT FROM FICTION One of the challenges, of which there are many, is that well-meaning businesses and individuals are sending their waste for recycling and paying a premium to do so, and then the waste is not being recycled. “Any company entering the recycling realm is at risk if they don’t pay their due diligence with recycling partners,” explains Simon Scholes. “Window fabricators and installers have already been unknowingly
10
embroiled in waste fraud by third party recycling companies that are not what they say they are. Companies that take away old windows and offcuts for ‘recycling’ and then dump them or pass them on to a third party with no credentials. The difference now is, the chances of being caught, and the penalties for the crimes being committed, are increasing as highlighted by Sir James in this latest speech.
“According to Sir James, the Environment Agency (EA) is using a much more sophisticated approach to identify and prosecute anyone breaking the law when it comes to disposing of waste illegally – or being involved in disposing of waste illegally. The approach is based on the 4 Ps, which also guide the work of the police: Prepare to fight waste crime, by gathering the evidence and intelligence;
Prevent waste crime, by seeking to deter or disrupt it before it takes place; Protect the environment, communities, and business from the harm it does; Pursue the criminals. The EA says they will be using a much more high-tech approach to catch people acting illegally too, including using drones for surveillance and heat sensitive cameras to identify what is in shipping containers and warehouses.
STAND BY SUSTAINABLE “Any installer wanting to truly maximise on the opportunities in selling green, whether for ethical or commercial reasons, can only genuinely achieve this status if they are completely confident in their recycling partners. Now is the time to pay due diligence if you haven’t already, or take action if you have any doubts at all about where your waste is going. “VEKA Recycling collects and processes post-consumer frames at its specialist PVC-U window and door frame recycling site. We can guarantee that recycling standards and legal guidelines are upheld at every stage, including collecting old frames, shredding them, removing any metal components, sorting by colour, and pelletising to produce contamination free pellets to go back into making new products. Despite being recycled, the material will be just as durable as a new PVC-U equivalent. In fact, when mixed with virgin material, it can even improve new PVC-U profile. “The issue of waste crime is not going away. Nor is the desire to buy ‘green’. So, anyone in any doubt about where their waste ends up, or how responsibly it is recycled, needs to act sooner rather than later to protect themselves and their customers, and to safeguard their business for the long term.”

HEALTH CHARITY BENEFITS APEER’S MACHINERY FROM BURG-WÄCHTER'S SECURE INVESTMENT COMMUNITIES SCHEME BOOSTS PRODUCTION Apeer has announced a £160k investment to boost production of both its popular Silka doors and its sister brand Lumi’s range of aluminium window products. Focusing on investing in machinery at its Ballymena-based factory in Northern Ireland, Apeer is responding to a growing demand for its Silka composite doors and Lumi Aluminium windows. A new Emmegi machining centre has been installed at the fabricator’s recently expanded factory, as well as a new mechanical saw. Managing Director Asa McGillian said: “Quite simply, we need to make this investment in machinery to keep up with the enduring popularity of our Silka doors, along with the consistent and growing demand we've seen for our Lumi Aluminium range since its launch last year. “Future proofing our business by investing in the factory processes and machinery is the best way we can ensure that Apeer and Lumi are able to meet future demand for these products.” Lumi Aluminium frameless windows have proved a hit with homeowners and installers alike since their introduction to the market just a year ago, satisfying consumer demand for aluminium products while offering the same distinctive and contemporary Lumi edge-to-edge glazing aesthetic. Meanwhile Apeer’s Silka door range’s popularity has increased steadily since it was first unveiled to huge acclaim at the FIT show in 2019, thanks to its winning combination of smooth matt style, superior quality and competitive pricing. Apeer’s latest investment in machinery will benefit production of both the Lumi Aluminium and Apeer Silka ranges. “But this investment is not just about meeting demand while ensuring our high standards of quality and craftsmanship are maintained,” explained Asa. “It’s also about preparing for the upcoming developments we have planned for our Silka range… which we hope to be able to divulge soon, so watch this space!”
A mental and physical health support charity serving people living in Wiltshire, Carmarthenshire and Norfolk has won the support of Burg-Wächter UK's 'Secure Communities Scheme'. The security specialist singled out an application from Gul Outdoor Therapy to its scheme, and was impressed with the charity's work. As a result, Gul has now received a padlock and electronically locking safe donated free of charge by Burg-Wächter. Now, the charity is able to store its possessions safely and keep its perimeter gates secure, which is especially important given that it has an off-grid, rural location.
I'm very happy that Burg-Wächter has been able to assist us. It was wonderful that the scheme afforded access to security products ideal for our needs.
James Dwyer, Operations Director at Gul Outdoor Therapy, comments: "Gul provides mental and physical health support in the outdoors. Just over half of our provision is centred on using horses - ridden or groundbased - to teach skills and enhance mental health and wellbeing. The other part of what we do involves using outdoor spaces such as woodlands for the same purpose, and this involves navigation, gardening, bush craft and forest schooling. Prior to Covid there was already a rising need for what we offer, but since the pandemic it appears to have skyrocketed. Our rather remote location, combined with this expansion of activity mean our security needs have grown, and
The Secure Communities Scheme gives regional community leaders and volunteers the chance to win a security kit worth up to £200 for their organisation. Any regional initiative that is run by or supports the local community can apply.
To view a brief video concerning the company’s donation to the charity head to https://youtu.be/BlYWr8VjB9k .
Burg-Wächter launched the scheme in recognition of the fact that people around the country who are doing their bit for their community should not have to worry about the security of their premises, equipment or storage areas. The company's Secure Communities Scheme is its way of saying thank you to community leaders for supporting people in their area.
The type of project or organisation that the scheme is open to is very wide-ranging. It could be a scouts group; a local sports group like a cycling or football club; a school after-hours club; a hospital or healthcare community programme; a provider of events for children or pensioners; a facilitator of village activity; or a town/ village charity. As long as the initiative is run by or supports the local community, and it has a specific security need BurgWächter would like to hear about it. Successful applicants will each receive a tailored security kit to help secure property, premises, equipment or storage areas to the value of £150 - £200 at retail price. The Secure Communities Scheme is an ongoing initiative, which has already helped 97 regional causes through the provision of over 2,000 pieces of security equipment. performance, and ease of maintenance – but equally, we know that plastic pollution is a major threat to wildlife and the ecosystem more generally.
The Hull-based firm has recycled 300 tonnes of uPVC over a 12-month period as part of ongoing attempts to reduce landfill waste to an absolute minimum.
In addition to saving uPVC from landfill, Hurst also recycles cardboard, paper, toners, lead, wood, aluminium, polystyrene, polythene, glass and old office equipment like computers.
It’s just one part of the company’s broader commitment to sustainability, which has recently seen it adopt Mercedes Benz 250E hybrid vehicles for its sales team, helping cut its emissions from 132g per kilometre to just 32g. “At Hurst, we’re passionately committed to being a responsible manufacturer – and in the twenty-first century, striving towards ever-greater sustainability is a vital part of that,” comments Sales Director Mark Atkinson. “uPVC is an excellent fenestration material that offers outstanding longevity, thermal

"In addition, it was a super-simple process to apply for the equipment. The Secure Communities Scheme is featured on the Burg-Wächter website, and this details what to do. It's just a case of sending one email, that's all. I'd strongly recommend that other community-serving initiatives apply."
“That’s why we’re determined to recycle as much of the waste uPVC we produce as possible, we’re confident that we’re heading in the right direction.”
Similarly, its head office is powered by a green energy supplier. “We’re pleased with the progress we’ve made so far, but we want to go much further in our sustainability efforts in the months and years ahead,” Mark continues. “We’ll continue to identify areas we can reduce our environmental impact, and keep working to towards recycling as much of our waste as practically possible.” For more information, please call 01482 790790 or visit: www.hurstdoors.co.uk.

SILKA: ON TRACK FOR A PERFECT FINISH "Reflecting on the success of the Silka range of composite doors, they were created to fill what Asa and his team believed was a gap in the market for an affordable, attractive, residential door for homeowners choosing aluminium window frames for their homes."
How an idea for a composite door finish became a suite of aluminium windows
duplication of conventional aluminium surface finishes might be less desirable than a complementary finish, and so Apeer tasked its development team with precisely that goal.
Apeer’s Asa McGillian is no stranger to irony. After launching the original aluminium-looking Lumi window with its GRP frame, 6 years later he launched a version of the window in aluminium. And now, after enjoying what he says has been ‘spectacular’ success with the Apeer Silka GRP-skinned composite door, which offered a unique ‘aluminium’ finish, he has decided to launch a window system, together with a lift and slide door….in aluminium.
Asa has made much about the complex and lengthy task that this unexpectedly became, but with the reward of a surface finish that not only satisfied the perceived market for a composite door attractive to buyers of aluminium windows, it created a niche product that was attractive to a wider market. And so successful was this niche that Silka windows have now been launched, accompanied by a brandnew lift ‘n’ slide door. So apart from its distinctive surface finish, the key driver for the introduction of the Silka window, what else does it bring to the party? At 50 mm, the Silka window is set to offer one of the slimmest sightlines on the market for a double-glazed sash, but the designers believe it is the slimmest to offer triple glazing.
However, as is Asa’s way, nothing is that straightforward, because whilst Silka aluminium windows are indeed manufactured in aluminium, a key differential for homeowners to ponder over is…that the surface finish replicates that of the Silka doors, a distinctive and individual textured satin. Reflecting on the success of the Silka range of composite doors, they were created to fill what Asa and his team believed was a gap in the market for an affordable, attractive, residential door for homeowners choosing aluminium window frames for their homes, but for whom the choice of aluminiumfaced entrance doors was limited or unaffordable. The feeling was that exact
www.glassnews.co.uk | August 2022
Other key numbers are: 66mm aluminium profile thickness, powder coated in the 60-micron thick, fine textured ‘Silka’ finish as standard and foam filled, thermally efficient frames, with marine grade surface finish available as an option. Silka Lift ‘n’ Slide is also worthy of further mention. Launched to provide a suite of complementary doors and windows the
slider satisfies all of the key requirements of a premium door, but resplendent in the unique Silka finish: the rest of the key numbers are 144mm Aluminium profile thickness, standard or 25mm extension cill, 5-point locking, and high security Siegenia hardware, and heavy-duty rollers good for 300 kgs. Impressive for both the Silka window and the Lift ‘n’Slide is the thermal performance: Interim testing indicates an improvement on Building Regs, whilst triple will comfortably reach ‘A’, figures that will be confirmed, says the company, by the end of August. And finally, colour: windows and doors in the most popular Anthracite Grey and Black, with the option of White internally. A wider colour palette is available but for longer lead times. Asa is naturally optimistic about the potential for Silka, presented now as a window and door suite: “I can’t think of another brand that has begun with a residential door which has then been extended into a full range of casement windows,” he said. “In fact, the success of Silka doors was somewhat unexpected, beginning as an idea for a surface finish, to become a brand in its own right after sales made the decision easy for us. The sales success of the Silka door during the past two years has provided the most reliable market research,” he added.
Asa McGillian
Asa insists that Silka windows offer a completely different proposition to its much-vaunted Lumi range: “With its ‘frameless’, edge-to-edge glazing Lumi is still regarded as avant-garde and quite distinctive, whereas Silka windows are more conventional in their appearance,” explained Asa. “The ranges provide our retail installers with a more comprehensive offer to their homeowner customers.” With orders being taken now, supplies of Silka Aluminium windows and Lift ‘n’ Slide doors will commence early August. www.apeer.co.uk

ECO PLASTIC WOOD BUILD FOR THE FUTURE Liniar, the UK’s leading PVCu manufacturer and a subsidiary of Quanex, has a wide range of customers across a variety of industries – and the team love hearing about the different projects its products are used for. Sean Preson, Owner and MD of Leicester-based fabricator and installer Eco Plastic Wood, looks at the world differently to most people. He sees the potential in every product - not just for its conventional use, but for what else it could become. We speak with Sean to learn how he and his team have taken Liniar’s fencing range and created sustainable, energy efficient, low maintenance and great looking outbuildings and garden rooms.
THE INVENTOR Sean tells us, “I was looking at Liniar’s fencing range and recognised it had so much potential. It’s a great looking product and the more I thought about its structural integrity, the more I realised, I can build a room with this.” Starting from a nugget of an idea, Sean tried various methods to build his first room. He explains, “Building the walls was so quick, as the fencing panels are a bit like a Lego construction style – however the corners, I just couldn’t get right. I tried various ideas, but it wasn’t looking crisp and clean enough.”
DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGY It soon became clear to Sean that he couldn’t use conventional machinery to create the corners due to the size of each fencing panel. Sean comments, “If I’m going to do something, it has to look perfect. I soon realised that I needed specialist cutting and welding machinery to ensure the corners didn’t let the appearance of the room down. There wasn’t anything on the market, so I designed and adapted my own machinery. It took a few goes, but I now have machines that create perfect corners, which are both neat and strong.
THE FIRST OF MANY After perfecting the design, the first official garden room was built and installed. Sean says, “We’ve called the range Ecoeasi Build, and we’re proud of our prototype room which has been installed in my son’s garden. We learnt a lot during the manufacturing process and the team and I have made further improvements since, which includes bespoke connectors to ensure the walls are 100% waterproof and stable. “We then went on to sell our first room and have more orders in the pipeline. The beauty of the Ecoeasi Build room is that it can be built to pretty much any shape or size, and construction is very quick and easy, making it completely bespoke and perfect for awkward spaces. “Because we already fabricate the Liniar range of windows and doors, we can easily include features such as stunning bi-fold doors. This makes the buildings attractive and
ensures a perfect colour match, which you may not get with different ranges.
THERMAL EFFICIENCY GUARANTEED By using Liniar’s fencing panels, windows and doors, the Ecoeasi Build range comes with the best-in-class low maintenance PVCu products. Whilst the buildings require steel reinforcement to ensure they are structurally sound, all the steel work is on the inside, so thermal efficiency isn’t compromised. “Using A+-rated Liniar windows and doors means the buildings are as thermally efficient as possible,” explains Sean. “Even on a cold day, the garden rooms hold an ambient temperature and only require a small amount of heating.” Sean has even designed in a clever hidden rainwater collection system, using Liniar’s fascia and soffit range around the eaves, for a seamless, attractive finish.
BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE Mark Sims, Liniar’s Outdoor Sales Director comments, “I was very surprised when I saw the garden room Sean has designed. I never imagined Liniar fencing could be used to create a complete building! You can’t tell that it’s actually made from fencing panels – and the fact Sean has created bespoke machinery to overcome the issues with corners is nothing short of incredible. I am proud to support Sean with the Ecoeasi Build rooms and can’t wait to see what else he comes up with!”
THE FUTURE OF ECOEASI BUILD Sean and his team have installed two of the Ecoeasi Build rooms at Bentley’s Garden Buildings, based in Leicestershire. One is a conventional garden room, which could be used as an office, a home gym or a summerhouse; the other is a glamping pod, which includes an innovative bunk-bed system that converts into a table and also changes into a 3-seater sofa. Customer interest is already reported to be high, particularly as the Ecoeasi Build rooms will never need sanding, painting or staining – making them a good long-term choice. Sean concludes, “As a business, we want to innovate for the future. The Ecoeasi Build rooms can be easily dismantled and moved, and at the end of their long useful life can be fully recycled. It’s important to me that we use and create sustainable products and the Liniar range ticks all our sustainability boxes. EMPLAS COMMITS TO £1MILLION PLUS INVESTMENT IN NEW IGU LINE Emplas has placed an order for a £1million plus state-of-the-art Forel Vertical IGUline, significantly increasing its capacity but also driving un uptick in IGU quality. Scheduled for delivery in the autumn, the investment will deliver a 45% uplift in capacity on its current 10,000 IGU a week capability. Ryan Johnson, Managing Director, Emplas said: “It’s a big investment but we can see the return that it will deliver for us and our customers, not only this year but a long way into the future, through faster manufacture, better quality and greater control of cost. “I don’t think this year will be quite as volatile as those that we have just been through but stability of IGU supply, the availability of glass and the control of cost, continue to exert a significant influence on the market.
“Our acquisition of Padiham and the investments that we have made to date give us far greater control over each of those factors.” Emplas new IGU line will feature a Forel Vertical Washer and Water Treatment plant, plus its patented CR coating remover. Emplas has also opted for Forel’s Art AS Flexible Spacer Applicator. This automatically applies spacer bar to the edge of the glass sheet with an ultra-high level of accuracy, delivering an instant and far better bond than traditional spacer systems, maximizing thermal performance. The Forel coupling press then simultaneously couples IGU’s while filling them with gas ahead of automatic sealing, delivering a highly accurate final seal on units and significantly reducing the likelihood of failure. This is preceded by the six-figure investment already undertaken by Emplas in Padiham since its acquisition in 2018. This included new software integrations, a new sealing robot, as well as new handling equipment.
“We remain investment-led as a Group”, continued Ryan. “The market is going to continue to see change and we are making sure that we’re ready for it by investing in our capability across our businesses”, he concluded. Whilst very strong in many parts of the UK already, Rockdoor were keen to attract new customers in new territories and support them in introducing the Rockdoor brand to even more homeowners. Their Trusted Installer scheme is a dedicated network the company operates, which connects homeowners with professional and reputable installation companies across the country. Whilst exhibiting at the FIT Show, Rockdoor announced their latest initiative – a £5,000 showroom upgrade for any new customers who signed up to become a Trusted Installer from the FIT Show. This initiative combined with other factors such as their recent ‘no bow’ guarantee, new door styles and furniture options, meant that the composite door manufacturer enjoyed a successful May and June. Discussing the surge in demand for customers joining the Rockdoor Trusted Installer network, Simon Bird explains some of the reasons for their accomplishments: “Our first appearance at the FIT Show was a great success, not only in attracting new customers, but also to showcase to the industry that we have the most unique composite door in its class. Our stand was busy from the first day through to the last, which was great to see. “The surge in Trusted Installer applications we have received is welcome news for us, as we look to strengthen our coverage across the country. FABRICATORS CALL FOR AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO PUSHING PRICE RISES DOWN THE HOME IMPROVEMENT SUPPLY CHAIN Six leading fabricators of products to the home improvement sector have called for a halt to the ongoing practice of pushing price rises at the top down the supply chain. Central Window Systems, Conservatory Outlet, Listers, Roseview, Prefix Systems and SolarFrame have joined forces to urge firms in the sector to work together to find new efficiencies and to combat the unending barrage of price increases being introduced - especially at a time when consumer demand is down. Recent publicly available data shows that household spending has reduced by up to 50% compared to the same period last year and bosses believe the last thing consumers and retailers need to contend with now is a further rise in the cost of products.
“Enforcing more price increases during a market slowdown is entirely counterproductive and will do more harm than good in both the short and long-term.” The recent proposal of price increases from the very top of the chain are due to take place in September and would happen just as the energy cap is set to rise again, with manufacturers and retailers set to be stuck in the middle with pressure from both sides. These changes could exacerbate a suppressed market and be counterintuitive to campaigns promoting the financial viability of purchasing new, energy-efficient windows and doors or extensions for their homes. Employing thousands of staff and amassing more than £130m sales between them, the
six companies believe their involvement in both manufacturing and retail gives them a unique insight into consumer pain points and a worrying dip in demand that some firms in the industry are failing to see coming.
those at the top of the supply chain to listen to the voice of consumer-led businesses and explore ways of absorbing some of the increases without passing them on.
Roy Frost, Managing Director of Listers, went on to add: “As an industry, we have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to face countless challenges, but this barrage of price increases simply must stop.
“We are already doing this for our customers, using all the efficiency savings we’ve made to cushion the cost increases from above. However, this is only possible on the prices of the products Prefix has market control over.
“We’re not trying to single out particular suppliers, more a case of looking for a more sensible and collaborative approach that focuses on the all-important consumer at the end of the chain.”
“It is undeniably a tough trading environment, but this is a case of ensuring the longevity and long-term success of the sector.”
Chris Cooke, Managing Director of Prefix Systems, concluded: “The industry needs

“We’ve seen prices increase at exponential rates over the last two years and this has continued through into 2022,” explained Greg Kane, CEO of Wakefield-based Conservatory Outlet. “The determination has always been there to shield our customers from these price hikes, absorbing what we can through improved efficiencies, working creatively with our supply partners and passing on what we must. We’ve held the line and absorbed all incoming increases throughout 2022 but there obviously reaches a point when this becomes unsustainable.” Gary Morton, Managing Director of Central Window Systems, continued: “This isn’t just affecting us, but our industry as a whole and we must be as transparent as possible to act in the best interest of the entire sector. If these price rises continue, and are again forced down the supply chain, consumers will simply not engage.

Product Design Director, Adrian Redshaw stated, “PAS24: 2016 for window units is set at a specific standard to ensure the complete product resists attack. It focuses on withstanding manipulation of the window hardware and combines mechanical loading, leverage and pressure, and impact testing. The Prestige range came through the tests without a hitch, exceeding many of the required classifications needed to gain a pass certificate and allowing us to attain endorsement by the Secured by Design initiative.” “We expected remarkable results from the Prestige window system, and we weren’t disappointed. We built the system to the same set of principles as our Classic window range; to be innovative, easy to manufacture and simple to install using standard components, while delivering sleek and uninterrupted sightlines that perform to the highest-levels of security.” Adrian commented, “Adding the whole Prestige range to our Secured by Design product listing is a massive accomplishment for us, one which should also give our customers a competitive benefit.”

FIRST TOUCH PORTAL ORDERING SYSTEM GOES LIVE AT ENDURANCE DOORS Endurance Doors has launched the UK’s first TOUCH Portal live online ordering system, in partnership with the Business Micros Group. TOUCH Portal is the first truly end to end online ordering system in the window and door market – seamlessly managing an order all the way from retail enquiry to manufacture and delivery. It transforms the way that fabricators price and process orders, and massively improves the design, quoting and ordering experience for their trade customers. At Endurance Doors, the TOUCH Portal door designer and data platform is now live on the website https://endurancedoors. co.uk/ so customers within Endurance’s TOUCH Dealer Network can log in whenever they want to generate instant quotes and place orders. As well as the convenience, the biggest benefit for installers comes from the fact that TOUCH Portal is fully integrated with the Business Micros manufacturing and business management software that Endurance already uses. That means quotes are based on real time product data and pricing, and customers can just add their mark up using the requote customer feature and send their
own professional personalised quote direct to the homeowner from within the system knowing that it’s accurate and up to date. From Endurance Doors’ perspective, the integration of TOUCH with its Business Micros Evolution and EvoNET software means that orders placed via TOUCH Portal go direct to manufacturing, saving on order processing and eliminating the need for double entry. The composite door specialist can also use TOUCH to send news and updates to customers and provide downloadable technical and marketing support materials. Scott Foster, Head of Group Sales and Marketing for Endurance Doors, said: “It’s a real thrill for us to be the first fabricator to launch the much-anticipated TOUCH Portal system. It is game changing software which will transform the way we engage with our Installer Partners, as well as making a big impact on our operation and efficiency. Once again, we’re leading the way in the composite door market and can’t wait to start delivering all the benefits that TOUCH promises to our Partners.” The continually updated data platform that underpins TOUCH Portal was developed and hosted by Business Micros and the
designer and customer interface was created by the team at group companies The Consultancy and Glazing Vault. Together, they are responsible for the vast majority of window and door designers used in this industry, so it’s no surprise that TOUCH incorporates all the elements which retail buyers most value. That includes fully rendered, realistic product images, accurate glass and hardware choices based on the fabricator’s own datasets, an intelligent configurator that only designs what can actually be fabricated, and a Virtual Home visualiser that lets users upload internal and external pictures of their home and see exactly how the door or window they have designed will actually look. Graeme Bailey, Managing Director of the Business Micros Group, commented: “We’ve been working with our launch partner fabricators for many months making sure that TOUCH Portal does everything they need it to do. Endurance is the first over the line, partly because its Portal is dedicated only to doors, but also because it is a powerful brand that has believed in the TOUCH project from the start and has always been a strong and loyal supporter
of Business Micros. We’ll be announcing a whole raft of other big name launch partners fabricating both windows and doors over the coming weeks and months. 2022 already looks like it will be the year when TOUCH becomes the number one choice for trade fabricators in the UK.” TOUCH Portal is fully compatible with the TOUCH Vendor lead generation, remote selling and quoting tool for installers launched by Business Micros Group in 2021. Users of TOUCH Vendor can choose to link their system direct to their chosen fabricator’s TOUCH Portal or continue to use it as a standalone option. All the details are at: https://bit.ly/3yQAdRh

SCHÜCO EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNERS 2022 ANNOUNCED Schüco is delighted to announce the winners of its esteemed Excellence Awards which were presented in the impressive setting of Whitehall’s Banqueting House by architectural designer and television presenter, Charlie Luxton. Held in association with Architecture Today, the awards are an established part of the architectural calendar and attract a wide range of high-calibre projects. The awards celebrate the innovation and close collaboration between design teams and contractors that successful building projects demand. The award categories were updated slightly this year and included residential, commercial, mixed-use, education, healthcare and leisure buildings, both newbuild and refurbishment and adaptive reuse projects. The judges assessed each entry against four key criteria: creativity, innovation, technical skill and creative collaboration.
The Master’s Field Development for Balliol College, University of Oxford, comprises 225 furnished ensuite study bedrooms arranged across eight new buildings and supported by ancillary facilities and a new sports pavilion. Schüco doors, together with Schüco windows incorporating bespoke aluminium spandrels, provide a range of fenestration supporting the buildings’ natural ventilation strategy.
Excellence Awards celebrate the very best in architecture and façade design. Successful façade design is dependent on many factors, from ensuring good energy performance and natural lighting to meeting demanding aesthetic and technical criteria. The winning projects all demonstrate this superbly. “Our congratulations go to all our award winners whose combined skills, knowledge and experience have achieved such impressive end results.”
“The project is a beautiful essay in how to build in a sensitive context. The highly refined façades use Schüco windows to striking effect.” For full details of all the Schüco Excellence Awards 2022 winners, visit: https://bit.ly/3ONilh7
Speaking about the building, Pankaj Patel, Director of Patel Taylor and one of the award judges, said: “The project is a beautiful essay in how to build in a sensitive context. The highly refined façades use Schüco windows to striking effect.” The awards also featured the coveted People’s Choice award, voted for by attendees on the day. This year that accolade went to the Fire Station Auditorium in Sunderland. The flexible, three-storey music venue was designed by Flanagan Lawrence, working with specialist contractor Entec Design. 15% EFFICIENCY GAINS HELP EMPLAS KEEP A LID ON CUSTOMER PRICE INCREASES Manufacturing and operational efficiencies of up to 15% have supported Emplas in fixing the prices its customers pay for products for the past six months. Delivered as part of the fabricator’s continuous improvement programme, Emplas has introduced a range of initiatives in the last year. This has included a redesign of its factory floor; investment in its fleet; and an ambitious factory floor leadership programme. Combined, this has contributed to year-onyear efficiency gains of between 12 and 15% across its business - a saving which Jody Vincent, Sales Director, Emplas, said had been passed directly to its customers. He said: “Installers are seeing a lot of price increases. Glass, hardware and their own operational costs including energy, fuel and labour are rising.
“While we’ve faced our own set of inflationary pressures - not least energy surcharges - but also our own energy, fuel and labour costs, we’ve been able to keep a control on them through manufacturing and operational efficiencies. “That’s something that we’ve passed on directly to our customers through the price freeze that we’ve had in place since February.” Emplas has driven a series of efficiency gains throughout its operation since COVID. This is something that Jody points out was started in response to disruption to its only supply chain during the pandemic, but which has delivered an operational return as the supply chain has normalised. It has also been driven by a large-scale factory floor training programme, which has empowered 40 of its shop floor supervisors to implement local changes, improving communication and employee engagement.

“We couldn’t be doing what we’re doing without great employee retention and engagement”, Jody explained. “40 members of production are currently going through a two staged leadership training programme, we’ve set up operational and quality working groups, and generally made things flow better through the factory. “That’s delivered operational efficiency gains of up to 15%, which has supported us in offsetting some of the inflationary pressures that we face as a large-scale manufacturer.” Emplas is also continuing to invest to build future operational efficiencies and capacity within its operations. This includes a £1million plus investment in a state-of-the-

Designed with comfort and luxury in mind, each apartment features a modern glass balcony offering stunning views over the surrounding hills. Quantock House is also one of the first UK projects to have an NHBC accepted A2-s1 glass balustrade system installed on its apartment balconies the result of a close working partnership between fire safety glass manufacturer Pyroguard and Architectural Metalwork Installations Limited (AMI), the architectural metalwork specialist. Appointed by AHH, AMI was tasked with developing

a fire-rated glass balustrade solution. Working closely with Pyroguard’s technical team, this collaboration resulted in the development of AMI’s Fire-Tek Balustrade system, featuring Pyroguard Balustrade fire safety glass. The system, fully backed by site specific structural calculations, is compliant with all the latest building regulation requirements for residential buildings over 18 metres tall (11 metres in Scotland). Designed specifically for balcony and balustrade applications and suitable for installation on buildings over 18-metres high (the first of its kind and patent pending), Pyroguard Balustrade is a toughened fire safety glass, manufactured to classification
A2-s1. In addition to its fire reaction qualities, Pyroguard Balustrade also offers excellent light transmission and is certified to the 1B1 impact resistance rating (according to EN12600) – both key factors for the application. Speaking about the project, Steve Furniss, Director at AMI said: “We were first introduced to Pyroguard by our client, AHH, who had tasked us with creating a fire-rated glass balustrade system, after initially struggling to find a solution suitable for buildings over the 18-metre threshold on the open market. Working with Andy Lake, Pyroguard’s Sales Director, and the rest of the technical team at Pyroguard, our design team was able to
develop the AMI Fire-Tek Balustrade system. “As well as delivering effective fire protection, it was important that the glass used within our system adhered to the line load requirements associated with these types of highrise buildings – Pyroguard Balustrade ticks all of the boxes. Our client was delighted with the end-result, with our system design and the Pyroguard glass accepted by the NHBC for use on this development.” Andy Lake, Sales Director UK & IRE at Pyroguard, added: “It’s been great to work with AMI on the development of this balustrade system and we’re exceptionally proud to be the only glass manufacturer in the UK offering such a product. Following the Building Regulations’ ban on the use of laminated glass on highrise residential balconies and terraces back in December 2018, it’s wonderful to now be able to re-establish glass as a design solution for such applications.” Construction on the Quantock House development began in August 2019, with the property welcoming its first residents in February 2022. QUALICOAT CONFERENCE SUCCESS Attending the QUALICOAT UK and Ireland ‘Futureproofing Facades’ conference at the Building Centre in London was undoubtedly eye opening for Glass News’ Editor Chris Champion. To those not intimately involved in the aluminium side of the industry the question is raised in the mind as to what is QUALICOAT? Is it a product? Is it a trade association or is it an industry standard?
designs. Michael emphasised that design durability was crucial and stated that coated aluminium could last 80 years or more given regular maintenance by simple ‘washing down’.
Naveen Sandhu enteretains during the 'Fire safety and Facades' panel discussion
QUALICOAT is, in fact, a global quality label organisation committed to maintaining and promoting the quality of lacquering, painting and coating on aluminium and its alloys for architectural applications. It can also be looked at as being a specification such that architects and specifiers can stipulate that the QUALICOAT standard is required for their particular structure or building. You may well ask if there’s a British standard and why not simply demand coatings to that standard? The point is that the QUALICOAT standard is more demanding than BS EN 12206-1:2021.

AkzoNobel Powder Coatings’ Naveen Sandhu introduces ‘Fire Safety and Facades’
QUALICOAT has established specifications defining minimum requirements for plant and equipment, coating materials and finished products. All requirements in the specifications must be met before a quality label can be granted. These specifications are designed to ensure high-quality of coated products for use in architectural applications and inspections can happen at any time to ensure standards are maintained. This is certainly onerous and shows how committed these powder coaters are that they set up themselves up for such inspections that can result in their QUALICOAT licence being revoked.
& Ireland with the support of Department of Marketing. The event concentrated on aluminium in construction as a sustainable fenestration material and, in particular, how powder coating has advanced over the last few years to meet specifiers expectations. The Conference was opened by Angus Mackie, Chair of the QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Association, who welcomed speakers and delegates to the days proceedings. Angus also introduced Chris Champion as Compere for the day and thanks were also given for the days sponsors, Barley Chalu, Chemetall, Interpon, Jotun & Vertik-Al. Angus went on to explain that the conference was all about how we can now maximise the service life of windows and facades to ensure construction sustainability by correct specification.
overview of how the Association has grown into a global architectural specification for powder coating, resulting in a worldwide, recognised quality label for finishing. Today the Association is fully accredited and offers a ‘Seaside’ class of powder coating as well as QUALIDECO which offers realistic finishes replicating such materials as wood. The latest addition to the specification options is QUALICOAT 3.0 which is a minimum recommendation for the quality of extruded aluminium, especially if it comprises recycled content.
The main purpose of the conference was to educate architects and specifiers about the QUALICOAT specification and help them understand the advantages of demanding this standard from their suppliers. There were over 130 attendees at the conference and the Presentations and Panel Discussions covered every aspect of preparation and coating of aluminium to provide long lasting quality and safety.
First speaker, Ivo Vermeeren, President of QUALICOAT, based in Zurich, offered an
Following Ivo’s introduction, delegates were treated to a masterclass in architectural aluminium specification by first keynote speaker, Michael Stacey from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. Michael explained how specified powder coating had begun to become mimetic, replicating such materials such as copper or terracotta in award winning
Fire resistance of building envelopes over 11m in height has become a crucial issue over the last few years following the Grenfell Tower disaster. Naveen Sandhu, Specification Manager of AkzoNobel Powder Coatings, explained how correctly applied powder coatings comply with an EN 13501-1 classification of A2-s1,d0 is permissible under Part B Regulations for buildings over 18m (11m in Scotland). Naveen went onto describe the BS 8414 Test Methodology using full scale testing with assessment to BR 135 where powder coating meeting the A2-s1,d0 classification is fully compliant. It is crucial that the complete cladding build-up, including the insulation, cavities, fire breaks, etc. are specified correctly to ensure full compliance and fire safety. As a Global specification the latest QUALICOAT Specification now encompasses the flammability of powder formulations to ensure that single sided coatings on panels meet the A2-s1,d0 classification. Chris Mansfield of Tomburn explained the update to BS EN 12206.1 2021 and what changes had been made since its previous iteration released in 2004, and this will be offered in a future editorial from QUALICOAT. Jan Lukaszewski, Secretary of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland, gave the delegates an overview of aluminium’s impressive characteristics. From aspects such as superb corrosion resistance, light weight and virtually infinite recyclability, no wonder that we cannot meet the demand for aluminium by recycling alone. Aluminium is perfect for use in construction where the material has its highest recycling rate where, on average, 96% of aluminium is recycled on building deconstruction. The challenge now within the industry is to ensure that we begin recycling within the many grades of alloy so that grades of recycled aluminium is not lost. This will enable us to take a scrap window extrusion and recycle it back into window extrusion.
The conference was held at the Building Centre in London and ‘Future Proofing Facades’, has been hailed a success by all who attended. The event was professionally organised and run by QUALICOAT UK

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper regularity, i.e. when to conduct what tests and at what intervals. The recording of these repeat tests of the production process, given the clear QUALICOAT Specification parameters, is one of the key elements of the twice yearly unannounced inspections.
Two architects exchange views - Professor Michael Stacey with Maxwell Hutchinson
QUALICOAT UK & Ireland were honoured to have former President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, Maxwell Hutchinson, as the second keynote speaker at the conference. At 73 years old, Maxwell offered a view of responsibilities in building construction and design. Whilst Maxwell conceded the conference was all about construction and sustainability in the facade, it was only the architect who could make the facade look beautiful! Keen to know what can be achieved using powder coated aluminium, Maxwell insisted that we must continue to educate architects and continue to support them throughout the design and build process. QUALICOAT UK & Ireland welcomed from Spain, Dr Jose Manuel Mota, of the Spanish Association of Aluminium and Surface Treatment. Jose introduced to the conference the thinking behind the new QUALICOAT 3.0 specification which relates to the quality of extruded aluminium that is used in architectural powder coated fenestration, namely alloys 6060 and 6063. By tightening the specification of these aluminium grades using existing testing methodology, it can be demonstrated that the durability of the powder coated aluminium is further increased. Currently being tested and offered on a per project basis, it is anticipated that extruders in the future will fully adopt QUALICOAT 3.0 for their production and will apply for a QUALICOAT 3.0 licence. To explain the importance of the aluminium pretreatment process prior to powder coating, Senior Global Product Manager, Oliver Katschmareck of Chemetall Limited offered delegates compelling reason why to acid etch aluminium profiles by removing 1gm/m2 of the aluminium surface prior to the application of a protective conversion layer. This etch removes elements such as Copper, Iron and Zinc on the surface of the aluminium, these elements can cause corrosion under the conversion layer. The finished conversion layer

consists of a chrome-free, chrome or anodised pretreatment and offers weathering protection to the base aluminium and also forms a key for the powder coat to strongly adhere to. Inspections of QUALICOAT licence holders is key to maintaining consistent quality within the QUALICOAT Specification. Michael Muller who is Managing Director of IFO GmbH, QUALICOAT UK & Ireland’s independent test house, explained to delegates what happens during an unannounced inspection. Importantly how the QUALICOAT specification differs from many standards as it defines testing
To close the day’s conference, Philipp Ambruch, Director of Rudolf Ambruch Fassadeenpflege GmbH, a GRM member, offered an introduction to the cleaning and restoration of powder coated facades. He emphasised that regular, minimum cleaning will extend the useful life of all architectural coatings. Without regular cleaning it is possible to restore a weathered facade, but this will be more expensive than introducing a regular facade cleaning regime. Chair, Angus Mackie, closed the days proceedings by thanking the speakers and the delegates who had given up their day to learn more about ‘Future Proofing Facades’. Delegates were invited to stay on within the meeting venue to network with speakers and members of the Association.

Directors at the Glazerite UK Group have marked a year at the helm of the nationwide fabricator, following last summer’s management buyout. Led by Group Managing Director Rob Brearley, alongside fellow directors Mark Johnston, Jeff Dunn, Darren Rhodes, and Matthew Thomas, the team has spearheaded a number of improvements to unlock further opportunities for its customers, against a challenging backdrop of raw material shortages and energy price hikes. Rob explains: “Glazerite was already a highly respected company staffed by dedicated employees when we took it over. Following completion of the MBO in July 2021, we’ve begun to rollout a programme of improvements to further benefit installers, our people, and how we operate as a business.” Recent changes have included a sixth site, with the opening of Glazerite North in Barnsley. Meanwhile, investment into new machinery and equipment has continued across the business, as well as the addition of new vehicles that meet Low Emission Zone (LEZ) emission standards, making deliveries to LEZ-based customers easier and more sustainable. Strides have also been made to embed a lean culture across the fabricator, with best practice ways of working implemented in the customer services and order processing teams, headed up by longstanding Glazerite employee, Melanie Jacobs.
From left to right: Jeff Dunn, Darren Rhodes, Matthew Thomas, Robert Brearley and Mark Johnston
Rob adds: “Our people are the foundation of everything we do. By encouraging contributions and input from everyone, we have been able to strip out unnecessary, time-consuming, and costly tasks across all functions. This is particularly notable in the manufacturing side at each division, where we’re embedding lean principles.” Development of staff and diversity is also top of the Glazerite agenda, with Rob adding: “In addition to empowering employees to contribute ideas on how we run the business, we offer development and a clear career road map. We’ve got some real success stories already, particularly amongst our younger cohort, with the likes of 24-year-old Oliver Bailey heading up purchasing at our North West Division, and Eleanor Austin, 23, being promoted to Purchasing Manager at our site in the Midlands.” The next 12 months are set to be just as busy for the fabricator, as Glazerite continues to expand its product portfolio, giving customers even greater choice, service and support. Rob concludes: “We’ve taken the reigns at the toughest of times and had to contend with some tough external factors such as raw material shortages, nationwide resourcing issues, and spiralling prices. Fortunately, we’ve navigated these successfully and look forward to realising our ambitions for growth.” www.glazerite.co.uk
THE RIGHT GLAZING HOLDS THE KEY FOR COMPLIANT ROOF LANTERNS Atlas Glazed Roof Solutions is advising installers that selecting the right glazing is the key to ensuring a roof lantern system can meet the new Building Regulations, that came into effect in June 2022.
In the shift towards a Future Buildings Standard, the government has introduced a range of changes to the Building Regulations for England, including a mandatory 30 per cent cut in carbon for all new homes and a 27 per cent cut for other buildings. Changes to Part L of the Building Regulations in England are being introduced on Wednesday 15th June 2022. Part L focuses on the energy efficiency levels and the thermal performance for domestic, non-domestic, new-build and renovation project buildings with the object to reduce the impact on fuel usage. Part L focuses on U values for rooflights, as energy ratings do not apply to rooflights within the regulations. Atlas has introduced a free to download guidance document that clearly explains the minimum glass centre pane U value requirement, to ensure the installation of roof lanterns, rooflights and glazed flat roof systems can meet the requirements of Part L. The guide is available to download at https://atlasroofsolutions.co.uk/ Winston Osborne, Technical Director of Atlas Glazed Roof Solutions: “Our thermally broken aluminium profiles are manufactured using the highest quality materials

but it’s important to understand how glazing can make a significant difference to how the completed system performs. Our completed glazing roofing systems can exceed U values set out in the new standards. “The Atlas Technical Team is available to help architects, glazing companies and installers identify the minimum glass specification required to ensure the roof installation is compliant with these important changes to the building regulations.”

NAVIGATING THE TRICKLE VENT CONUNDRUM
MINI ROOM MARKETING FOR GARDEN ROOMS
Stuart Judge, managing director of Tradelink, explains what the new Part F of the Building Regulations means for window installers…
Making Your Space have just launched Mini-Room, a showroom sample of their impressive Garden Room system that’s been designed to make installation quick and easy thanks to the adoption of the latest off-site construction techniques.
Trickle vents in windows have long been used in the background as a means of complying with Part F of the Building Regulations: ventilation. While this has not always been straightforward, things have become more complicated with the new 2022 building regulations and it is worth remembering that the burden of compliance falls on the window installer. For the glazing industry, the most relevant change in Part F concerns background ventilation: the requirement for ventilation is much bigger than it used to be. The way background ventilation is calculated has also changed, it has been amended to individual room values rather than whole house figures. Background ventilation is vital as it supplies outdoor air for the health of the building and its occupants. As homes become ever more airtight to reduce heat loss through air permeability, the importance of controlled ventilation increases. Even so, it is important to look at the bigger picture. Ventilation through a trickle vent in the frame or sash is counterintuitive to what we are trying to do to increase the overall thermal efficiency of windows, so it is vital that they are used only where needed. How the regulations are interpreted will, inevitably, vary greatly. Every case has to be considered on its merits because the required ventilation can be achieved not just via trickle vents in windows but through other forms of ventilation, such as mechanical whole house ventilation systems. This means that, while the duty of care falls on the installer at the point of sale
- not the homeowner, developer, fabricator or manufacturer - understanding the bigger picture for any particular installation is not always easy. Trickle vents are often resisted by the other parties on the grounds of aesthetics. It is well documented that homeowners are not keen on any increase in the number or size of trickle vents. Despite this, homeowners will not be able to sign a disclaimer; the installation must conform to building regulations. Any attempt to circumvent the rules would come back to the installer, not the homeowner. Understandably, installers may put in trickle vents whether they need them or not to be sure they are complying with the regulations. Although the vents are not that much bigger than before, the way that they operate and the measurement of their airflow has significantly changed. As a window manufacturer, we are working to ensure we provide the best commercial offer for the customer and the right choice of trickle vent. We have changed our vents to be able to provide ventilation through the use of a single ventilator. We have also worked hard to adapt our manufacturing details and have achieved good colour matching and pattern matching to ensure the vents are as unobtrusive as possible. While we cannot tell installers whether a particular window requires trickle vents, we can guide them through the regulations and equip them with the documentation and solutions to meet the new regulations. For further information, please visit https://tradelinkdirect.com
For those aspiring Design Partners without a show site, the Mini-Room is the perfect marketing support sample and combined with the latest premium brochure and other POS materials, helps close sales relatively quickly. eliminate cold bridging and condensation which you can often see in roofs constructed using aluminium and timber. Plus, they are thermally efficient by design which makes them an attractive proposition for customers.” The reason Leka products are such a powerful addition to any installer’s portfolio is their lightweight construction and the new Leka ecotech is no exception. Heidi said: “All Leka roofs are up to 40% lighter than other replacement roof solutions so in most retro-fit projects, the existing conservatory frames are able to take the weight of the new Leka roofing system without needing additional reinforcement. It frees up installers to design incredible solutions for consumers because their imagination is the limit, not the product.”
Heidi also highlighted the ease of installation of the Leka roofing products: “Installation is simple, which saves time and money on site and helps installers to increase productivity and profitability, which we know are more important than ever at the moment.” The Leka ecotech system is the latest innovation from a company that has taken the market by storm in recent years with its next generation of roofing systems. The company now offers a portfolio which includes the popular Leka Warm Roof, Leka Orangery Roof, Leka Xi Modular system, Leka Rooflights and the Leka ecotech system. Like all Modplan’s products, the new Leka ecotech roof will be manufactured in the company’s dedicated state-of-the-art roofing

This simply wouldn’t be possible with a more traditional showroom, due to the footprint this requires in the trade counter, so we’ve invested in digital to allow us to carry more stock in the warehouse and store more windows, doors and bi folds that our customers can collect. “Now we feel we have the depot concept right at Dundee, we’ll move forward faster and open more depots throughout 2022.” GAP Dundee is now open on Dryburgh Industrial Estate just off the A90, where their dedicated team are ready to welcome existing customers that we currently serve, together with new customers within the new area.

WHAT DO HOMEOWNERS REALLY THINK ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY? “Our research shows that homeowners are prepared to pay a premium for products which they see as being more sustainable or, particularly in the context of rising energy prices, which will help them reduce their bills.”
Deceuninck has published a White Paper highlighting the findings of exclusive consumer research on homeowner attitudes to sustainability. The Sustainability White Paper, is available to download at: https://www.deceuninck.co.uk/en-gb/sustainability-whitepaper. It draws on an independent research study by leading consumer research company, YouGov. This explores homeowner attitudes to sustainability in the window and door industry and highlights a number of opportunities to add margin by going green. Rob McGlennon, Managing Director, Deceuninck, said: “Sustainability, particularly energy efficiency and carbon reduction, has become even more important to homeowners. “Our research shows that homeowners are prepared to pay a premium for products which they see as being more sustainable or, particularly in the context of rising energy prices, which will help them reduce their bills. “As the market re-sets post-COVID, as an industry we need to be pushing sustainability and the energy efficiency message in the same way as we do colour. It’s a massive opportunity to drive up margin at a time when volume is reduced.” Deceuninck has committed to reduce carbon emissions from its 2021 baseline by 60% by 2030 and as a minimum 95% by 2030 as part of its journey to Net Zero by 2050. This is being delivered through a new sustainability strategy including operational efficiencies, renewable energy sourcing and production, sourcing of bio-based PVC, as part of its commitment to corporate climate action framework, Science Based Targets. As part of this strategy Deceuninck has invested more than €15million in one of the world’s most advanced recycling and compounding facilities to create the capacity to reprocess up to 45,000 tonnes of post-consumer and post-manufacturing PVC-U per year. In real terms this gives us the capacity to prevent more than three million windows from going to landfill annually. Encompassing the largest dry blending facility in Europe, our operation is fully integrated with our main manufacturing facility, connecting process, while reducing CO2 emissions by 90,000 tonnes compared to virgin feedstocks. It also delivers a 90% energy saving. “Energy efficiency, sustainability - they’re important right now, but are going to be even more important going forward”, continued Rob. “Our research shows us that it’s going to be pivotal and as an industry, we need to do so much more, systems companies, fabricators and installers.” https://www.deceuninck.co.uk/en-gb/sustainability-whitepaper. EPWIN WINDOW SYSTEMS RELEASES ITS NEW STOCKED COLOUR OFFERING Epwin Window Systems has introduced its new stocked colour offering across its market-leading PVC-U system brands. Clare Bailey, Managing Director of Epwin Window Systems, said: “Our enhanced stocked colour offering represents the industry’s preferred colour palette. From contemporary colours to heritage classics and natural palettes to expression hues, it’s an intelligent colour offer designed to support our customers at every level.”
VIRTUOSO DOORS WILL BE BETTER AND FASTER WITH NEW PAINT LINE Leading composite door manufacturer Virtuoso Doors is looking to significantly increase its manufacturing capacity with the installation of a new paint line. Gateshead-based composite door manufacturer Virtuoso Doors now has a new Giardina Paint Line as part of its ongoing programme of factory upgrades following a site move in 2021. The new paint line will mean increased capacity of around 50 per cent along with improved quality, increased paint optimisation and a market-leading choice of external colour finishes The Giardina paint line includes a panel cleaner; automatic spray machine; hot air flash-off tunnel and a jet-hot air-drying tunnel. The Virtuoso technical team has tested the new system and found that it leads to huge enhancements including quicker drying and an even more consistent paint finish. The company moved from its original Chester-le-Street site to the new purposebuilt manufacturing site at Follingsby Park, Gateshead, in 2021. The site has had a power upgrade to meet manufacturing requirements, a new compressed air system, and state of the art extraction system installed. David Wheatcroft, Managing Director of Virtuoso Doors, said: “We have a committed and experienced team here at
48
The new colour offering features 19 stocked foil finishes which include on-trend colour choices including Sage, Claystone and Pebble Grey. The new colour offer also includes 30 Made to Order options that reflect modern trends in colour selection. Clare said: “We’ve listened to our customers and expanded our Made to Order range that suits all sectors and tastes. This includes an expanded selection of contemporary greys and heritage colours in addition to new metallic finishes for the best in modern aesthetics. It’s the latest in a series of major investments in colour so we can give our customers a market advantage both now and into the future.” Next level aesthetics has also been escalated in the new offering with the use of five complementary base colours, white, tan, brown, cream and grey. The base colours have been selected to complement the foiled options for the best in streamlined aesthetics. Clare commented: “Having complementary base colours delivers next level aesthetics especially when it comes
to high-end domestic installations. For example, having anthracite grey foil on a grey base rather than white which you often see, delivers a sleek and streamlined finish when the window is in the open position.” All colours in the range will benefit from Epwin Window Systems’ continued investment in state-of-the-art colour technology. In 2019 Epwin Window Systems became the first UK company to take delivery of the Luna R lamination machine and it invested in a second machine in late 2020. Clare said: “The Luna R machines offer the best in lamination technology with an automatic set-up system allowing us to efficiently scale-up our foiling capacity in line with demand whilst delivering exceptional product quality”. To help its customers make the most of the market opportunities for colour, the Epwin Window Systems marketing team has produced an impressive range of highquality marketing materials. This includes a range of marketing assets for customers’ showrooms in addition to brochures, digital presentations, swatch books, marketing templates, video and POS material. The marketing assets are available for Epwin Window Systems’ customers to download from their Connect digital platform. Epwin Window Systems is renowned for setting new standards in the industry and its new intelligent colour offer, continued investment and customer support assets do just that. Virtuoso Doors. That team has worked very hard to reach the stage where we can invest in the infrastructure and systems to lift the business to even greater heights. “After the factory move and all the on-site improvements it’s great to be investing in systems that will really improve our output and the quality of our products. We will continue to produce top quality doors that the whole team can be proud of.” Virtuoso Doors manufactures high quality composite doors and PVCu door panels through a mix of precision engineering and workshop finishing supplying doors with stunning detail and unrivalled quality. U70 FEELING FLUSH WITH KOMMERLING DAN’S THE MAN FOR FABRICATED SALES AT KÖMMERLING
Essex based U70 are the latest fabricator to introduce Kömmerling’s next generation flush sash window which boats a number of design features and can achieve a U-value of 1.2W/(m2K) with a standard double glazed unit. There are 20 different colour combinations from stock including smooth grey both sides on a grey base and a further 58 available on a short lead time. The sash profile itself benefits from a 6-chamber design with a 7th pseudo chamber and it also incorporates additional material for the latest welding technologies including Mechweld that’s been adopted by U70 as an upgrade option from the standard welded corners. Kömmerling’s flush sash was shown to great acclaim at this year’s FIT Show, including the launch of the new concealed mullion harnessed for a traditional cottage (French) window. U70 are looking to offer this additional style of window and any Kömmerling flush sash window in just 3 weeks
Dan Wragg is the head of the specialist fabricated sales division at KÖMMERLING for their vertical sliding sash window and for the entire WarmCore range of hybrid window and door systems, all of which can now achieve a U-value of 1.3-1.4 W/(m2K) with a standard doubleglazed unit.
from order confirmation, with delivery right across the South East. Martin Killick, director of U70 commented: ‘The Kömmerling flush sash is the best 70mm product in the market by some way. The performance, looks and ease of manufacturing make it a must have product for us and our local installer partners, and we encourage anyone in our area to have a look at this new window.’ Karl Williamson, area manager of Kömmerling added: ‘U70 is a respected business in the South East and their big commitment to us shows complete confidence in us as a global
pioneer of technically better PVCu window and door systems. The flush sash has gained significant interest over the last few months and we’re expecting other trusted manufacturers to make the same commitment too.’ For information on U70, please visit u70.co.uk, e-mail info@u70.co.uk or call 01376 511360. With recent investment in the internal department and with a proven background in specialist products, Dan will be looking to support the current KÖMMERLING and profine customer base with specialist fabricated products. As part of a wider role, he will also look across the group at other technically-led windows and doors that require specialist manufacturing expertise and dedicated capital equipment. Dan Wragg, head of fabricated sales for KÖMMERLING commented: ‘Given the specialist nature of these products from a manufacturing perspective, it’s too much for some companies to invest given the capital requirements and potential long payback period. It’s ultimately a finished goods proposition that we’re offering for our existing customer base, with the re-assurance of dealing with a PVCu and hybrid systems powerhouse under the KÖMMERLING name.’ He added: ‘We’ve got a seamless process from enquiry through to manufacture and delivery, with the promise of marketing support and much more. There’s been a
clear demand for a KÖMMERLING sliding sash window for some time now, while the impressive credentials of WarmCore need no introduction.’ Robert Thiroff, managing director of profine UK and KÖMMERLING concluded: ‘This strategic investment in the fabricated sales division will support our customers with additional sales opportunities. The fact that we now have a vertical sliding sash window supports our claim as to having the broadest window and door systems product range of any PVCu business in the UK, which is good for us and our loyal network of KÖMMERLING partners.’ For further information please visit www. profine-uk.com, e-mail enquiries@profineuk.com or phone 01623 579200. CONSERVATORY OUTLET EXPANDS ITS PRODUCT RANGE WITH A NEW EXTREME OFFERING Conservatory Outlet, a leading UK fabricator, has this week expanded its range UPVC windows and doors by adding Fully Reversible Windows to its signature Extreme collection. Officially unveiled to its UK-wide network of retailers on 12th July, the windows build on the Extreme collection’s range of options and marks the first of several new product developments that the Wakefield-based company plans to roll out through the rest of 2022. Michael Giscombe, Conservatory Outlet’s Managing Director, said he was delighted to bring this new product to market. “We identified the need to further enhance our Extreme UPVC collection of windows and doors, and to provide our retailers with a new style of window. “In developing these units, we’ve ensured that they remain easy-to-use practical whilst still delivering on the leading security, style
50
and performance that our Network and their customer expect from the Extreme range.” Each window is fitted with a reversible mechanism that, once activated, allows the glazed panel to rotate through 180°. This makes cleaning and maintenance of the units easier than traditional options. The window has also been tested to meet the requirements of Secured by Design, the police-backed security initiative that
provides a recognised standard for security products Just like the rest of the Extreme range, all Fully Reversible Windows will be manufactured at Conservatory Outlet’s factory in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The launch of this new window has enabled the company to further invest in its workforce through additional training and manufacturing lines. It will also increase the total number of frames made by the manufacturer to around 10,000 per month.
To coincide with the launch of the Extreme Fully Reversible Windows, Conservatory Outlet has provided a suite of branded marketing materials across. Literature includes updated brochures, signage and sales guides. Conservatory Outlet CEO, Greg Kane, added: “We’re incredibly excited to bolster our market-leading range of UPVC window and doors with the addition of these reversible units. “To be able to offer a great product that sits perfectly within an established collection is a huge win for us and especially for our wider Network. With many of our trusted partners looking to expand, we’re constantly looking to provide avenues to enable them to do so. Greg continued: “By supporting them through product developments and advancements, we’re giving them the ability to explore new areas for growth. With the product launch supported by our exceptional team, we’re able to deliver an unrivalled range of products and valueadded resources that can’t be matched by any other UK fabricator.”

UAP PROCLAIMS CONFIDENCE IN ITS 3* CYLINDERS WITH £4K GUARANTEE UAP, the specialist in locks and hardware for doors and windows, is so confident that its range of 3* cylinders can withstand any attempts to break in that the company is offering a pay out of up to £4,000 for any homeowner whose home is broken into via a UAP cylinder. The £4K guarantee is available to homeowners in the event that their home is broken into via their UAP 3* cylinder and their insurance company will not pay out on their claim. Homeowners can access the cash as a limited liability payment if there is no sign of forced entry to the door. UAP’s marketing director, Kamila Kasperowicz, explains: “The £4K UAP 3* cylinder guarantee is not intended to be an alternative to insurance; in fact, to qualify for any pay out from us the homeowner must have valid insurance that has been active for at least a month prior to any claim. “Our guarantee applies to any incident where the homeowner can demonstrate that their home has been broken into via the cylinder only, and where they can prove their insurance company has refused to settle their claim.”
The new scheme applies to all UAP 3* cylinders, including the UAP Fullex Kinetica+ K4, which was launched by the company last year as the diamond standard for cylinder security, combining multiple defences against break-ins with ease of installation. To qualify for a pay out under the guarantee, the cylinder must have been correctly fitted by a registered installer or locksmith using the fixings provided by UAP, and the homeowner must provide a receipt from when the UAP 3*cylinder was installed. The door must have been deadlocked at the time of the break in, using genuine UAP keys, which must not have been left in the cylinder or anywhere nearby. Any letterplate fitted to the door must meet the latest TS008 standards for anti-fishing and lock manipulation. UAP is encouraging homeowners to register for the scheme as soon as they have their new UAP 3*cylinder fitted. Kamila adds: “To qualify for the £4K guarantee, homeowners must register their cylinder online within 28 days of the installation and it must have been registered for at least a month before any claim is made. “We are encouraging the whole supply chain to take note of this scheme, which is designed to give homeowners complete confidence in the robust security protection that UAP 3* cylinders offer for their property. It gives locksmiths and installers the potential to add value for customers by providing this free financial safety net in the event of a
break in, as well as demonstrating the calibre of design and manufacturing that goes into our products.” UAP cylinders can be registered for the £4K Guarantee scheme at https://uapcorporate.com/register/

SOTERIAN SLIM LETTERPLATE RECEIVES CERTIFIRE APPROVAL
ERA DELIVERS HIGH SECURITY WITH NEW 2* TS 007 DOOR HANDLE
UAP, the specialist in locks and hardware for doors and windows, has secured a Certifire certification for its Soterian Slim TS008 letterplate.
ERA, one of the UK’s leading home security and fenestration component providers, has extended its premium range of Fab&Fix suited hardware with the launch of its new Berwick High Security 2* Door Handle. Expertly designed to provide fabricators and installers with a high security door handle that resists unwanted attacks, the handle has been independently tested and certified in accordance with TS 007-1: 2014 +A2 Corr 2 and is compatible with all euro profile cylinders. Featuring a sculptured backplate that discourages unwanted attention from mole grips, it contains a hidden strengthening plate, which helps prevent the removal of the external handle. Available in both 44mm and 70mm versions to accommodate a wide variety of PVCu and composite door profiles, the handle is supplied with all fixings to support easy and efficient installation, including high strength security M6 screws. Delivering first class functionality, the fully sprung solid handle provides a consistent 90-degree lever return, whilst the ergonomic lever and low friction nylon bush provide smooth operating action. Perfectly matching over 200 hardware products within the Fab&Fix portfolio, the handle is available in a wide range of finishes, including Hardex Chrome, Hardex Graphite and Antique Black. It is also supplied with colour matched screw heads to create a consistent finish that will stand the test of time. Sarah Knight, Product Manager for Decorative Hardware at ERA, commented: “The launch of our new Berwick High Security 2* Door Handle demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring
we provide our fabrication and installation partners with certified solutions that meet the latest security and performance standards, whilst also delivering on visual appeal and durability. “For over 180 years, ERA has continued to set the standard for security and reliability. This, when combined with Fab&Fix’s 30 years experience delivering first class finishes, enables us to provide our customers with security solutions that not only deliver the highest standards of protection but look great for their entire lifetime.” The handle has undergone thorough independent testing to TS 007 2* and PAS 24, and when used in conjunction with the ERA 1* anti-bump cylinder, meets the recommended TS 007 3* security level to defend against an opportunist burglar. Awarded the Secured By Design Police Preferred Specification, the handle forms part of the ERA Total Security Guaranteed hardware, offering consumers a £5,000 guarantee.
Designed in-house by UAP, the Soterian Slim is the most compact TS008compliant letterplate ever made. The certification means the product can be safely installed in timber FD30 fire doors without the need for further testing. Julian Roberts, Technical Services Director at UAP, said: “The Certifire certification follows a rigorous assessment. This involves factory production audits at each site where the product is manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001 and additional requirements of the Certifire scheme.
“This process has independently verified the performance and quality of the Soterian Slim, ensuring installers and end-users can make an informed decision when selecting the product.” Designed for 44mm – 70mm composite, timber and uPVC doors, the Soterian Slim measures just 298mm x 98mm, with a flap projection of
14mm. The design includes an innovative, pivoting serrated stay system, which limits the flap opening to 39 degrees to protect against key fishing and lock manipulation. As well as providing robust security and fire safety features, the product eliminates the issue of bulkiness on the interior face of the door. This provides a more aesthetic solution and ensures the door can open fully without damaging the letterplate or interior wall. UKAS accredited, Certifire is recognised by regulatory authorities worldwide as an international mark of fire safety across a diverse range of passive fire products. The thirdparty passive fire product certification scheme assures performance, quality, reliability and traceability of products and systems. The certification process was carried out by Warringtonfire, a global leader in fire safety services.
Durability tested in excess of 200,000 cycles, the Berwick meets the requirements of BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5 and is supplied with a 10 year mechanical and surface finish guarantee to provide the highest standards of protection and peace of mind. For further information on ERA’s diverse portfolio of security products, including Fab&Fix, visit www.eraeverywhere.com or contact the sales team on 01922 490 000 or email info@eraeverywhere.com.

ODL EUROPE PROVIDES THE CONTEMPORARY DESIGNS CONSUMERS WANT Consumers are increasingly choosing to make a modern style statement with their front door – and ODL Europe has the composite door range that helps fabricators and installers meet that need. Suzanne Nicholl, Business Development Manager at ODL Europe, commented: “While traditional designs such as our Deco range remain popular, we are also seeing a clear increase in demand for composite doors that have a more modern feel.” Suzanne says two designs that are particularly popular are the Moderne Nelson and the Moderne Albert. The Moderne Nelson is a fresh contemporary door with three striking
54
central glazed squares that create a stylish entrance. The horizontal panels add an extra level of interest while the smooth finish keeps the look clean and uncluttered. The Moderne Albert epitomises modern styling. It features four rectangular glazed panels that can run horizontally or vertically and sit to the left right or centre of the door. It's the door that's perfect for creating an architect-inspired, contemporary look.
The Capstone 44mm door slab is manufactured using 2mm thick GRP SMC skins for impressive impact resistance. Stiles and rails are manufactured from a waterresistant pure PVC polymer and reinforced using LVL (Laminated Veneered Lumber) timbers with a minimum density of 570 kg/ m3. The SMC skins and sub-frame door assembly are fully bonded using a urethane adhesive resin.
When it comes to the practical benefits of composite doors, no other company delivers them better than ODL Europe. The company is the exclusive UK partner of Capstone Engineering Ltd, one of the world’s leading suppliers of composite doors.
The slabs achieve a U value as low as 0.8W/m2k as part of a doorset assembly. And when used with SecureDesign board reinforcing and an ODL Europe glazing cassette system it achieves a security level to PAS24:2016, the industry’s enhanced
security standard. All slabs are covered by a 25-year structural guarantee while the pre-coloured slabs are covered by a 10-year warranty. Tel: 0151 933 0299 – www.odleurope.com

COST CONTROL IS CRITICAL
MORE GOOD NEWS ON UKCA MARKING – BUT ARE WE STILL IGNORING THE OBVIOUS SOLUTION? Dear Chris, At Edgetech, we’re delighted that common sense has prevailed for a second time regarding product safety regulations and the UK’s exit from the EU – but we still have some concerns. We’ve been closely following the government’s plans for replacing the CE mark: the symbol that, for decades, has indicated whether a product complies with EU health, safety and environmental protection laws. When the UK voted to leave the EU, it was inevitable that system would have to change - but in the early stages, the government’s handling of the process was far from satisfactory. Ministers suddenly announced that businesses would have to start complying with its new UKCA mark by January 2022 – leaving extremely little time for thousands of companies to get vast numbers of products retested. Faced with a backlash from industry and lobbying from trade bodies, the government reconsidered, recognised the challenges faced by industry, and extended the deadline to 1st January 2023. Now, they’ve gone further. One of the biggest challenges preventing businesses from certifying their products to the new UK standard was the lack of a mutual recognition agreement that would allow them to use test data from EU recognised notified test houses to support their certification. This has changed. The government has made it clear that AVCP System 3 testing data from an EU recognised notified body will be accepted until the 31st December 2022. This makes things significantly easier for UK businesses to achieve UKCA marking and is therefore an extremely positive move.
Dear Editor, It’s been a tricky few months.
However, one of the core difficulties still remains. Even now that data from EU notified bodies will be accepted, there are still only a relatively small number of test centres to go around – and thousands of businesses from multiple sectors rushing to get their products tested. Our fear is that this is only going to provide short term relief, and many of these tests take many months to complete in test centres already backed up. So there’s the question of what happens in the long-term. After we reach the 1st January 2023 deadline, if testing is delayed or incomplete, or if recertification is required as a result of product introduction or changes, what happens then? If the only test resources are UK approved bodies, how does the industry cope, particularly when not all certification required is even available from a UK approved body? Currently there’s a lack of UK Approved Bodies capable of testing IGUs to certain specific requirements in EN1279 or WA17/1 thermal testing in the UK. And then there’s the extremely complicated situation in Northern Ireland – where businesses are faced with the costly and challenging prospect of having to meet CE, UKCA, and the territory’s own UKNI marks all at once, potentially having to gain duplicate certification from different regional test bodies. Rather than a succession of quick fixes, none of which deal with the core issue, we hope we’ll see ministers in the UK and the EU agree on the most pragmatic solution – an ongoing Mutual Recognition Agreement, that sees EU body test certificates accepted in the UK and vice versa. Yours sincerely, Gary Shoesmith Head of Technical & Quality, Edgetech UK
The positive is that the supply chain has now, to a point, stabilised. In most instances we’re getting the materials that we need to get product made and out the factory gates to our customers in the time frames that we would expect to be able to do it. COVID is still with us but it’s not as disruptive. What’s made things challenging are the price increases and surcharges, some expected, others coming to us from more or less, out of the blue. Given the increase in wholesale energy prices, the massive increases that we’ve seen in glass costs was always on the cards. Increases driven by increased demand for resin were also expected to feed through. But we’ve also seen a multitude of other cost increases, further energy surcharges and on top of that, big increases in what we pay for energy and fuel and labour costs. Despite this we took the decision to hold our prices for sixmonths, starting in February this year. It’s a decision which has allowed our customers to price each job effectively, particularly those operating in the commercial sector, where lead times are longer, or those running very big order books. It’s meant that that our customers haven’t seen their margins eroded because in the space between the time they won the work and the product has been delivered, it’s gone up in price. We’ve been able to achieve this through
an element of margin sacrifice in our own business – but most importantly through the operational efficiencies that we’ve achieved in the last year, which have helped us to control costs to our customers. COVID made us review everything that we were doing. We asked ourselves a simple question, ‘how could we operate more efficiently to deliver a better service?’. We did that because we had to. Our OTIF wasn’t where we wanted it to be. But in adapting to those challenges and changing how we work for the better, we’ve been able to drive improved quality and service, while controlling costs. This has included a redesign of our factory floor to improve efficiencies and quality; we invested in a new fleet which has helped to lower the impact rising prices at the pumps are having on all logistics businesses; the solar panels we installed on our roof have supported us in controlling energy costs. And we’ve also driven cultural change, investing in the training and development of our people, so that they’re more engaged and better at what we do. We review, learn and do better again. That’s contributed to efficiency gains across our business of between 12 and 15% in the last year. That’s not something we’ve pocketed and set against our bottom line, we’ve passed it directly to our customers for the past six-months and will continue to do so, as far as we can, going forward.
We’re also investing for that future. Glass supply has been a key pinch point. With our own IGU business, the purchasing power and the partnership we have with Saint Gobain, we’ve been able to take the edge off those price increases for those customers who buy glass from us. We will strengthen our hand, when we take receipt of a new Forel IGU line in the autumn. At more than £1million, it represents the single biggest investment ever made by an Emplas Group company and will support us in driving further efficiencies, controlling future costs. Inflation is here to stay in the short term. That creates two key challenges for our industry. Manufacture and supply costs more, at a time when homeowners have less to spend. We can do little about the latter, but we can control costs - or at the very least some of them. We’re family-owned, investment led and planning for the future. Will we be able to hold our prices forever? Well, you know the answer as well as I do. When it happens, our customers will, however, know that it’s not for a want of trying on our part and will have and will continue to benefit, from our investment programme and the controls on costs that it has delivered, going forward. Ryan Johnson Managing Director, Emplas

LEKA LAUNCHES NEW ECOTECH ROOF SYSTEM Conservatory roof innovators, Leka Systems, have launched their new ecotech roofing system giving fabricators and installers even more opportunities to add value to their portfolio. Although Leka already delivers building control compliant roof systems, the new Leka ecotech roof is one of the most technologically advanced roofing systems on the market today, achieving 0.15w/m2k whilst being incredibly economic in the process. Commenting on the new product introduction, Rhys Hoddinott, Managing Director of Leka Systems, said: “Our new Leka ecotech roofing system ensures compliance for installers but as importantly, maintains a competitive pricing point in the process. The new ecotech roof is thermally efficient by design and is a further extension of our popular Leka Warm Roof, Leka Orangery and Leka xi roofing products but at a more competitive pricing point.”
Rhys says: “The conservatory roof market is changing rapidly and fabricators need to ensure they’re offering the products that installers need to compete in the new landscape. The changes to Part L of Building Regulations covering thermal efficiency have had a huge impact on many solid roof manufacturers, and it has never been more important for fabricators and installers to offer the best in energy-compliant products. And with the rise in energy prices, more consumers will be looking at ways to improve the thermal efficiency of their conservatories and extensions too.” In recent years there has been a big shift away from standard white box conservatories to higher value spaces that deliver homeowners greater flexibility. This shift forms part of the recent home improvement boom, with many homeowners either extending their properties or repurposing existing conservatory extensions. Rhys, said: “Our Leka roofing products are ideal for both new build and refurbishment projects and allow fabricators and installers to differentiate themselves from the competition and add real value to their offer. Our new ecotech roof with its superb u values and price offering will further enhance the Leka roof appeal.”
The new Leka ecotech roof uses the same technological innovation as the market-leading Leka Warm Roof. It is
manufactured from a structurally tested, high grade GRP profile system, which means no cold bridging or condensation, as you see in roofs constructed using aluminium and timber. It all adds up to a genuinely lightweight roof that achieves a U value of just 0.15 W/m²K, which will be very appealing to homeowners looking for thermally-efficient products that meet compliance requirements.
Leka systems’ commitment to product development is a cornerstone of its ethos. The launch of the Leka eccotech roof is the latest product development that demonstrates its ongoing commitment to working with fabricators to bring the products they need at a price they like! Tel: 0800 773 4040 www.lekasystems.co.uk
Leka roofing products have become popular with fabricators and installers since they made their debut into the industry in 2015. In the past twelve months, the company has trained many fabricators and installers to help them get up and running with Leka products. This shows just how quickly Leka products have proved their value in the marketplace.

SELL WITH ‘WOW’! 61% of installers say that ‘improving the buying experience’ is the primary reason for seeking new quoting software, according to latest research from Tommy Trinder. Tom Barfield, Business Development Consultant to Tommy Trinder, speaks to a lot of window installers; he’s carried out more than 750 demos of Tommy Trinder’s Framepoint® app over the last couple of years. And, according to Tom, it’s all change. “2021 was all about saving time. Installers, working all hours to keep up turned to Framepoint® in the need for speed; as a means to get quotes out more efficiently. Quite honestly, installers just wanted their evenings and weekends back! “But this year the thinking is different. In our more competitive, post-pandemic environment, installers are recognising that there’s more to winning hearts & wallets than simply getting a quote out of the door. Installers want software that will wow customers and help them stand out from the crowd – software that will help them deliver a great ‘buying experience.’” Focussing on how people buy, not just what they buy, makes business sense according to a number of recent studies. Indeed, latest research by global business consultants, Gartner, shows that companies that deliver a great buying experience grow twice as fast as those that deliver average experiences. Commenting on the drive towards creating a unique customer experience at the sales stage, Chris Brunsdon, founder & CEO of Tommy Trinder says: “We launched Framepoint® to help installers sell with a ‘wow’ and it seems it never been more important. There’s always plenty of ooohhs and ahhhhs from homeowners when you free-sketch projects on Framepoint®; seeing their new windows and doors come to life in full photo-realistic glory is a moment great excitement.
FLUSH PVCU DOORS NOW LIVE ON FRAMEPOINT® Tommy Trinder have made flush PVCu doors available to touch, show and price on their Framepoint® app. “The trend towards heritage style, ‘timber alternative’ PVCu products shows no sign of abating,” says founder and CEO of Tommy Trinder, Chris Brunsdon “Around 24% of all PVCu casements quoted by installers on Framepoint® are flush. Installers told us they wanted doors to match so we’ve pushed on and made flush single and double doors configurable too.” Framepoint’s interface for configuring flush PVCu doors is slick and impressive as we’ve come to expect. Mid-rails and glazing bars can be free drawn with your finger, just like sketching on a pad. Then tap
and touch add panels, textured glass and cills. “Details matter when it comes to selling value added products like flush PVCu doors,” says Chris. “Being able to model premium ironmongery and foils and instantly show customers the effect is important to the sale. And, of course, ultimately it helps justify the higher price tag.” Flush PVCu doors completes a volley of launches from Tommy Trinder over recent months, aimed at supporting top end PVCu installers. Features such as the ability to touch and show pegstays, both working and dummy, model deep bottom rails on sashes and the ability to show clients the difference between mechanical and welded joints in one touch are all now live on the app. Installers interested in discussing how Framepoint® can help sell timber alternative products can book a free demo at tommytrinder.com.
“Details matter when it comes to selling value added products like flush PVCu doors,” says Chris. “Being able to model premium ironmongery and foils and instantly show customers the effect is important to the sale. And, of course, ultimately it helps justify the higher price tag.”
“Customers love being able to try before they buy too - trying out different handles, colours and bar options and instantly seeing the results up close and in situ. All this adds up to a slick, memorable and fun buying experience. And in a flattening market, installers are telling us it’s becoming key to winning orders and staying ahead.” Installers interested in finding out more about how Framepoint® can help ‘sell with wow’ can book a free demo at www.tommytrinder.com.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
LEKA PRODUCTS LEAD THE WAY IN FUTURE-PROOFED THERMAL EFFICIENCY INNOVATION
SECONDARY GLAZING HAS REDUCED MY ENERGY BILLS BY 40% Amid concerns over rapidly escalating energy prices - and with more rises to come- homeowners are naturally concerned over how they can conserve energy and keep costs down. Installing Granada Glazing’s secondary glazing has helped the owners of a single-glazed apartment to save around 40% on their monthly electricity bills, as well as exclude external noise.
us money and the flat is now silent and warm,” comments Lindsey, who moved into the all-electric duplex flat in November 2019.
Lindsey Gordon’s monthly electricity bill dropped from around £450 per month to £230 in the following month after 11 secondary glazed panels were fitted in her threebedroomed home at Murrays’ Mills, Ancoats in central Manchester.
The secondary glazing was fitted in February 2021 and Lindsey noticed an immediate difference in heat retention, noise reduction and the March bill had dropped to £230.
Formerly the world’s oldest steam powered cotton mill dating back to 1797, the Grade II & II* listed buildings have been sensitively restored for residential use. The 107 apartments retain many historic features, such as exposed brickwork walls and multi-pane, sash and bay heritage windows. “Secondary glazing is the best investment we’ve made, I think, on this property to date. It’s made a huge difference, saved
At first, their heavy usage of the electric heaters meant their monthly bills were as high as £900 for three months. “They are energysaving heaters, so we left them on all the time to keep the flat warm. But once we realised the cost and reset the timer, our bill halved.”
“We had a whole year where we couldn’t understand why the bills were so big. It was a combination of not having secondary glazing and leaving the heaters on most of the time. I reckon it’s a 40% saving overall.” Reducing outside noise intrusion was Lindsey’s main reason for getting secondary glazing and the 6.4mm acoustic laminate glass offers enhanced sound insulation that can reduce noise levels by as much as 80% (54 decibels). However, she says the improved thermal efficiency it also
provides makes it “a very wise investment, especially in these times.” She adds: “The secondary glazing has made the flat completely soundproof and the rooms remain warmer for longer after the heating goes off. “Although bills are going up, we’re saving over £200 a month. I’m sure anyone we sell this flat to would be delighted with the secondary glazing!” Suitable for all property types, Granada’s slimline aluminium secondary glazing frames can be powder coated in over 200 RAL colours. Virtually invisible, they blend in with any interior décor. The Granada Glazing product range encompasses hinged, sliding, vertical sliders, including tilt back, and liftout options.
The changes to Part L of Building Regulations covering thermal efficiency have had a huge impact on many solid roof manufacturers. One manufacturer that’s unaffected is Leka Systems. Leka products have always achieved industry-leading U values thanks to the system’s innovative design. It’s an advantage that’s more important than ever right now. Rhys Hoddinott, Managing Director of Leka Systems, said: “The majority of our competitors have had to alter their systems to comply with the new regulations. In many cases, this has added complexity and cost to the installation. On the other hand, our Leka Warm Roof, Leka Orangery Roof and Leka
Xi are thermally efficient by design and have always been available in a range of U values from an industry leading 0.12 W/m²K. to 0.15 W/m²K. It’s a huge advantage for installers because our roofs are still as easy to fit as they always have been.” Rhys credits the thermal efficiency of Leka products to the innovation in their design. “We lead the way with innovation and consistently invest in engineering so we have been prepared for changes in building regulations since the day of concept and even future proofed further changes to Part L in years to come.” The big difference with Leka products is their GRP construction. The material

delivers outstanding thermal efficiency but also offers another important benefit in the current climate. It means they don’t use aluminium, which means they aren’t being affected by the sharp increase in aluminium prices. Rhys commented: “Fabricators and installers using aluminium are having to pass price increases onto consumers because they can’t absorb them any longer. Because we don’t use aluminium, this isn’t something we’re having to do. Our costs have been very sustainable, allowing Leka to become one of the most competitive systems in the marketplace.” With the rise in energy prices, more consumers than ever before will be looking at ways to improve the thermal efficiency of their conservatories and extensions. Leka Systems always had a compelling offering for this market. With the changes to Building Regulations, it’s an offer that’s just got even more compelling. Tel: 0800 773 4040 www.lekasystems.co.uk
EPWIN WINDOW SYSTEMS LAUNCHES NEW WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO FURTHER ENHANCE CUSTOMER SERVICE Epwin Window Systems has announced the introduction of its new Warehouse Management System (WMS) which went live at the beginning of July. Ray McGrady, Commercial Director at Epwin Window Systems, says the new system will deliver numerous benefits for customers. He commented: “Everything about our WMS has been aimed at making customers’ lives easier. The first difference they’ll notice is improvement in delivery paperwork, which will make booking in deliveries much quicker and more straightforward.” The WMS means every customer delivery will include an exacting delivery manifest for each stillage delivery. It will identify which products are on each stillage, which will make handling multi-stillage deliveries much easier. There will be a reverse pick list for each stillage,
64
so the first product on the list will be on the top of the stillage and the last one on the bottom, making booking in quicker.
and beginning of July and was carefully planned and communicated to minimise disruption to customer schedules.
The WMS has also enabled live dashboards to be implemented across customer services and order processing departments. These give live visibility of all orders, production and delivery schedules for greater transparency and instant customer updates.
Epwin Window Systems is renowned for its commitment to continuous investment in its business and the WMS is the latest example of this. Further investments are already planned for later this year, including an automated vehicle delivery communication system that will enable ‘live’ tracking and a 30-minute predelivery text message to be sent direct to the customer for a streamlined process.
Ray commented: “Our WMS harnesses the power of intelligent technology to streamline operations and improve productivity and visibility for us and our customers. COLD CALLING
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
DANNY WILLIAMS
‘COLD CALLING’
Each month our special correspondent Danny Williams* replies to a reader’s letter...
U VALUES? THE U FACTOR IS THE ONE TO WATCH… “We are a home improvement installer based in the West Midlands; we install kitchens, bathrooms but still our biggest business is windows and doors… and sales have been great. We have thrived since mid-2020 and not stopped since. As I write, Boris has been toppled and we await the fascinating process of finding a successor, and there are signs that things are quietening down, though in normal years that would be expected as people take their holidays. I am usually pretty good at calling it, but with everything else going on, I have no idea what to expect from the autumn onwards. What’s your take Danny?” LM West Midlands Let me share a secret with you LM: although for reasons best known to the editor of this excellent organ I continue to answer readers’ letters, even after several years of doing so, my qualifications to do so might best be described as a twitch in the bladder, although 36 years of flogging, making, fitting windows, doors and glass units might contribute something towards that twitch. But neither I, nor my bladder, have ever experienced the run of events that we are experiencing currently, or in the past two years to be honest. And it is just getting weirder and less comprehensible by the day. But this is what my instincts are telling me: Sales have been falling off steadily amongst my loyal and hardworking installer customer-base, from early spring. But that represents a levelling up of a different sort to the desperate government scheme designed to cling on to the Northern red vote. For me, sales have rationalised, falling from completely nuts at times, to something akin to being decent, but manageable. But we have to look closely at the detail: turnover has continued to increase, but units have fallen, simply due to the spiralling price rises in every single thing that we sell. Nothing has escaped. A change in attitude within the marketplace, an acceptance that costs are out of control, has resulted in the wind spilling from the sales of those who would normally fight over every single penny: even the most die-hard of them accept that it isn’t Danny trying to rip them off, but a global problem that even the best of us cannot do anything about. In turn, most have realised that unless they too pass on the increases to their homeowner punters, then they will head for certain failure as the slimmest of margins become severe losses on every job. How many years have I been beating this drum? What we have currently then LM, is a correction in the market, a welcome steadying, helped of course by supplies becoming generally stable, if not in cost then certainly availability. We all desperately needed that. But of course, the ongoing chaos in world events have now been exacerbated by the continuing debacle that is British politics…collective sigh.
By the time this issue hits the streets it will all have changed again, perhaps even with a new PM in place. However, the Boris meltdown has actually come at a convenient time with the Summer Recess and all, taking much of the sting out of it. And that is just as true of home improvement sales. Although the past couple of years have barely missed a beat, we are allowed out now and taking advantage of being able to roam the planet almost without restriction by Covid, though with flight cancellations and rail strikes stepping in the fill that void. But that doesn’t stop us trying to get away…. So sales have also taken their annual summer holiday. Will they restart again in the autumn, that is the question… in my humble opinion, I do not believe that politics, as such, will have any real effect either way. What will, is the fear of impending energy increases, which have crept in almost undetected as we entered the spring and summer months, when of course, most of us have our heating off. The thermostats will be progressively turned up in the autumn with the increases in energy costs, for many people, representing the repayments that they might have made for a set of windows and a new front door. Homeowners will be mindful – and fearful - of that and I believe that this, together with sky-high motoring costs and the inflated costs of everything, further spreading fear. And when fear spreads amongst homeowners, confidence goes out the windows that they were hoping to replace. And this will affect the mass market for replacement windows and doors with even higher earners will be hit as the energy bills in their nice 5 bed mock-Georgians, will be impacted pro rata. And then we have the U Factor: Ukraine. The suffering imposed upon the innocents of Ukraine is horrific and made worse by being driven by actions that are arbitrary and contrived. Even considering the ‘fake’ news from either side, the invasion was unwarranted. And the effect on the world from what is after all, a previously unremarkable area in global terms, has been catastrophic. And there seems to be no end in sight. Until there is, the conflict will play on our
collective minds, in business terms creating more pressure on confidence. And let’s pray there is no escalation. There will be some bright spots: employment will remain high and there is still money about and especially amongst older homeowners. For these, at Pioneer we have worked for years to steer our product offer from bog-standard white casements , whilst Danny watchers out there will know that I have put a stake in the ground with the distribution of Gerda, a range of steel and ali resi doors, aimed squarely at middle-market buyers though at nicely competitive prices. We sell a lot of Deceuninck flush sash now, most of them coloured, which again satisfies the higher middle market. I expect our sales to remain steady, though not spectacular, in this sector. Whilst I find the politics of the moment fascinating and nauseating in almost equal measure, we can but hope for a Churchilean figure that will lead us out of the wilderness; whatever colour your politics might be, a steady period without scandal would be nice. Sadly however, whilst neither Rishi nor Liz are likely to lead us into a Brave New World of positive government, the brown stuff that is out of our control, will continue to define our lives anyway. At which point LM, you are thinking ‘I wish I hadn’t asked!’. And fair play to you, so I will try to end on a brighter note: there is little threat to steady employment; those with money will hold on to it and actually, likely increase it; and we will never lose our extraordinary desire as a nation of homeowners, to lavish attention on our castles. Improving our homes improves our lives, directly but also emotionally. When the crap is hitting the fan, we make ourselves feel better by investing in what for the majority of us is the centre of our financial galaxy. We got through Covid by doing just that. And we will get through whatever fate decides next to throw at us, by responding the same way. But it might be a little more bumpy before we get there.
* Danny Williams is managing director of Chelmsford based Pioneer Trading and has been involved with all aspects of the windows and doors industry for 35 years. His activities include manufacturing a full range of windows and doors in PVC-U and aluminium, an IGU facility, retailing and commercial contracting.

DOORCO ACCREDITED WE INVEST IN APPRENTICES SILVER
GQA SUPPORTING ‘NOBODY LEFT BEHIND’ INITIATIVE GQA Qualifications, the awarding and qualifications-writing organisation is lending its support to a progressive and life-changing initiative for young people called ‘Nobody Left Behind’. The scheme combines community sports programmes with construction-related training and qualifications to improve young people’s employment prospects for entry-level construction industry roles. Nobody Left Behind works with groups of young people who have predominantly been social care service users, and gives support to try and steer them away from dropping into gang culture. Following a 4-week programme of community sports training with household name sports stars, students move on to work towards gaining GQA’s Level 1 Award in Construction Health and Safety and the GQA green general construction site Labourer’s CSCS card, as well as H&Srelated training such as manual handling and traffic marshalling, all accredited through GQA. Civil Engineering Careers, the agency championing the work-related training then facilitates interviews with construction employers who look to offer employment opportunities to programme participants. Commenting on its work with Nobody Left Behind and Civil Engineering Careers, GQA’s Technical Officer, Phil Douglas, says: “I noticed posts in my local area in Liverpool for community boxing camps, and having been involved in amateur boxing myself at schoolboy level, and also being a boxing fan, I started to find out more about this project. I reached out to and met with the initiative’s team, and it was clear that GQA would be a good fit for the learning element of the programme. We have rapidly built a good working relationship, and have supported the scheme in its development.
young people into employment in the next four years, and that’s a goal we’re honoured to get fully behind. It’s a pleasure to see the sense of achievement on the faces of the young people when they are told they have passed their CSCS card test, and the joy in their voices when they tell their friends “I’m starting work on Monday.” The initiative is a perfect fit with GQA’s philosophy of people development.” Barbara Travis, MD of CE Careers who heads up the initiative says: “I am so pleased to have established a relationship with GQA, who support the community initiatives and the education side through a range of accredited courses that help skill young people and give them the best chance of gaining employment. “As we progress, we will be offering multi-sports including boxing, football, rugby, cycling and hiking. We are offering female-only sessions in boxing with the hope of encouraging more girls to look at construction as a potential career choice, and football camps for both boys and girls with ex Liverpool and England footballers. GQA are a key part of our growth, and a partner that we are immensely happy with as our awarding body.” Nobody Left Behind is attracting the backing of senior politicians across the Merseyside region, and its aims are a perfect fit with the Liverpool City Region Growth Plan 2021-24. In addition, well-known sports people are using their platforms to raise awareness of how sport can play a key role in the motivation, training and support of young people trying to find their way to employment.
“I’m pleased to be working with the programme and its participants, helping them to benefit from GQA-accredited qualifications, CSCS cards and certificates. In addition, I’m happy to report that GQA and Building Our Skills - Making Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice have provided sponsorship support to help the programme get off the ground. We’ve donated towards a minibus that the initiative needs to help transport young people from further across the area, and we have been very pleased to be able to help in this small way. We have also been asked about development into other sectors in which we work.
Detective Superintendent Siobhan Gainer, Head of the Merseyside Violence Reduction Partnership said: “The progression and employment rate through this initiative is way above the national average for courses such as this. I think its success is down to the fact that it has found such a popular way of engaging young people through sport, and that this has worked hand-in-glove with the opportunity to gain training and qualifications that demonstrably lead to work. Having an employer and a specialist in training has been crucial, and it has both raised the bar for other courses and profoundly changed the course of young peoples’ lives.”
“I understand that Nobody Left Behind has set itself the challenge of getting 1,000

Leading composite door supplier, DoorCo has achieved the We invest in apprentices Silver accreditation, providing an apprenticeship framework for the business to attract and train new talent to the business. Jayne Sullivan, Co-owner at DoorCo comments: “As an industry, we need to do more to attract talent. The fenestration industry is fantastic to be part of and one that offers opportunity for varied and fulfilling careers for young people. Promoting this at grassroots, through schools and universities is key and by offering apprenticeships, we are able to invite young people into our thriving industry. This is something DoorCo is passionate about, so we are delighted to have achieved the We invest in apprentices Silver accreditation for the next three years, based on the apprenticeships and training we have delivered so far.” Matthew Elliot, DoorCo’s Systems Lead, has been instrumental in obtaining the accreditation and comments: ““Investors in People is widely recognised as the benchmark for good practice in training and development. To achieve the accreditation, we underwent a vigorous assessment which explored the business, our people and the existing apprenticeship programmes. The resulting accreditation not only marks DoorCo as a good employer but it provides a practical framework for the next three years to help us enhance our apprentice experience and monitor how well we’re supporting them at work, including development, communication and support.
“Apprenticeships give DoorCo an opportunity to develop skills relevant to our organisation. They are available at multiple levels and ages – not just for young people leaving education - and therefore provide an opportunity for people upskilling in their careers or looking for a complete career change. DoorCo is passionate about being a top employer and is always keen to shine the spotlight on the team’s achievements. We as a team feel we are understood, respected and that our opinions and ideas are heard. We understand where we can develop, that we have clear career paths, and we are supported along the way. This is why people are able to grow within the company, and there is a clear committed to opening this up further with more training and development opportunities and a rapidly growing apprenticeship programme. “To be awarded Silver on our first assessment is an incredible achievement and a credit to the hard work to all the managers, mentors, and apprentices at DoorCo. We are very much committed to delivering our action plan that is focused on providing our current and future apprentices - a new generation of talent - a structure to help them develop their skillsets and knowledge at the very start of their lifelong careers with us, and we are already working towards obtaining the Gold accreditation to improve the experience even further.” Jayne concludes: “The We invest in apprentices recognises DoorCo as a good employer, raising our profile to help us stand out from other apprentice employers and ultimately, attract better talent. Afterall, good apprentices want to work for good employers, and this is key to the future of our business and the industry at large.” For more information on DoorCo call: 01625 428955 or visit: www.door-co.com.
