GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE Arts Centre Grand Opening Now Thurs 29th July Further to the prime minister’s announcement that restrictions are now extended to Mon 19th July, we have to delay the Grand Opening until Thurs 29th July, when complimentary cakes and refreshments will be served. We look forward to seeing you then. Songbirds Hello ladies. I hope you are all well and enjoying the lovely weather we are having. As things are at the moment, singing is still a no go, therefore it makes it difficult for us to fix a date for our meetings. We will plan for a very hopeful start up in September but if advice changes we will obviously notify you all. In the meantime keep well, stay safe and look forward to us all joining together in song ASAP. Avril Bevan (01995) 602904
Garstang Ukulele Group We began to meet again outside when restrictions relaxed in May and have continued in the courtyard of the Arts Centre. It has been good to play with others rather than alone. When the Arts Centre re-opens we will assess the safety of singing inside and make a decision about moving indoors. But while the weather remains warm and dry we can continue to play outside. Our first bookings for our large group are in December, though there may be a couple of opportunities for smaller groups before then. If you are interested in booking us please check out our website. Bob Sapey www.garstangukulelegroup.co.uk July / August Exhibition We are delighted to welcome artist and sculptor Michael Hipkins MRSS to the Arts Centre in July. Michael (b.1942) studied at Blackpool College of Art before continuing to study painting in Paris and then etching and printmaking at S.W.Hayter’s Atelier 17. In March 2020, Michael suffered a stroke and then Covid. However as soon as he was discharged from hospital, he returned to painting and has produced over 120 works of art. This exhibition charts his journey to recovery through the imposed isolation of both illnesses and lockdown - opportunities to observe nature more closely in this scenic area of the North West. Michael’s work may be seen from Tues 27th July to Thurs 19th August. Sheila Tearle (01995) 603816 Judy Osborne (01995) 600996 www.garstangartssociety.org.uk fb: /artcentre.garstang

GARSTANG WALKING FESTIVAL Normally we would hold the Garstang Walking Festival in May, but this year we needed to wait a little longer as we progress through the roadmap out of lockdown. We are making plans to be back with the 2021 festival on Sat 28th Aug to Wed 1st Sept. There will be five days of walks and activities and something for all abilities to enjoy. It might be a little later in the year but it will be worth the wait! After so long in our homes, Garstang Walking Festival is the perfect way to rediscover our beautiful scenery, heritage and, of course, the friendliest walk guides! For now, save the date and we will post further details as soon as bookings are open. Details will be posted on our Garstang Walking Festival Facebook page and at the Visit Garstang tourist information centre. Keith Montgomery fb: @garstangwalkingfestival

CENTENARY ANNIVERSARY (cont) GCVO DSO TD MP, Colonel of The King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment and member of parliament for Lancaster. In 1921, the national anthem was sung followed by the hymn ‘O God, our Help in Ages Past’. General Sir Archibald then addressed the assembled congregation and unveiled the memorial. On it were listed the names of fourteen men from the three parishes who died in the Great War and those of eighty-seven who also served and lived to return home. The venerable Phipps John Hornby, Archdeacon of Lancaster, gave the dedication followed by prayers and the communal singing of the hymn ‘Lead, Kindly Light’. Finally a detachment of soldiers from The King’s Own Regiment fired a salute of three volleys and buglers sounded ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’. Have you noticed how well the new raised bed on the left of the village hall entrance is doing? The orange geums have been outstanding. Great choice of plants for our bee hotel. We are grateful for the local businesses and community support which we’ve had this year. We didn’t know if the pandemic would stop us gardening, but we have more volunteers than ever and are delighted to have such a great Bloom team. If you fancy lending a hand, please come along (with trowel) and meet the team on Tuesdays, 10:00am at Catterall Village Hall or Wednesdays, 7:00pm at Stone Cross Community Garden.
CATTERALL IN BLOOM Hello everyone and after a scorching June, we wonder what July will bring? We have an exciting date for your diary: the RHS North West in Bloom judges will be visiting our village on the morning of Tues 20th July. Let’s show them what fabulous gardeners we are and that we’re proud of our village by keeping front gardens and pavements tidy. You are welcome to chat to the judges if you see them out and about. Catterall in Bloom’s main task, after preparing and planting the community garden along with the large containers throughout the village, was watering. We also have a new flowerbed at the side of the village hall where the perennials are just setting down their roots, and watering regularly is essential. Keeping the gorgeous plants alive requires a hard working and

GARSTANG IN BLOOM The Bloom team have worked very hard throughout the last few weeks planting out the summer bedding into the beds, barrels and troughs. This has included the Arts Centre and Cherestanc Square this year. We hope that you have noticed them! In the week beginning Mon 19th July, the judges from the RHS North West in Bloom were in town to award their marks. We crossed our fingers for sunshine and hoped that everything looked wonderfully floral for the visit. Don’t forget that we’re always ready to welcome new volunteers, so if you’d like to come and help us prepare for this date, please do. You don’t even need to do any gardening - litter-picking and sweeping may be enticing alternatives!
Est. 1970
Speaking of litter-picking, we had lots of helpers for our latest session with Wyre Borough Council as part of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. This cleared Garstang of a great deal of litter after the sunny Bank Holiday weekend.

CALDER VALE METHODIST CHAPEL Our Sunday morning Services are continuing at 10:45am with our ministers or visiting preachers leading the worship. On Sun 4th July it will be a family service led by Mrs Shirley Townley. We await guidance updates with regards to singing and refreshments. Recently Rachael has been singing for us. It is good to just listen to and concentrate on the words. The Zoom services continue and I can let you have the links. There is a morning service and an evening one. Also available written material for each week. Our take-away lunches continue. Please give me a ring to book one by Wednesday evening. Tony usually delivers just after 1:00pm every Friday. By this time there is lots of parking room in the Mill Square. We are holding another pop-up cake stall. This time it is on Fri 2nd July from 12 noon to 1:30pm. There will be lots to choose from. It will be donations only and these will go to help Isaac (a Calder Vale teenager) reach his target for the local scout trip to Malawi next year. It should have been last year but, as you can imagine, fundraising for the group has been very difficult. We want to do well for Isaac and to encourage him in this exciting venture of a lifetime. If you can donate cakes etc. please do get in touch and we can arrange delivery/collection. For the second year we are missing our summer songs of praise. We look forward to happier times when in methodist tradition we can sing together again. One of our favourite hymns at songs of praise is ‘Be Still for the Presence of the Lord’. This song was written by Dave Evans and speaks about the God who is encountered by Jacob and by Moses and by Elijah, about the God who walks with Peter and James and John, being with us – here – now – as real to us as he was to them. Be still for the power of

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE The final meeting of the circle for the 2020/21 year was held on Mon 21st June, although the Focus Magazine print deadline has not allowed me to provide a full report from the meeting. The meeting was a wine related quiz together with a member’s choice, giving everyone an opportunity to present their selected wine. It has been an interesting year, but due to the availability of technology we have been able to keep the circle alive with a programme of Zoom meetings. We hope that for the 2021/22 season we will be back in the Arts Centre for our meetings, although we are exploring the possibility of allowing those who do not wish to attend because of health issues, the opportunity to participate remotely. Only time and the progress in controlling Covid will tell if that ambition can be fulfilled. An event planned for the summer is a picnic, which will be held on Sun 15th Aug. This is based on the hope that restrictions will have been further eased by that date allowing this outside event to take place, and for members to meet up face-to-face. Alan will circulate details to members, and we can only hope that the weather treats us favourably. Mervyn Stokes

GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB (cont) my late appearance was accompanied with sunshine and a colourful sky. If the Garstang Show does take place this year on Sat 7th Aug, the club will have a stall in the horticultural marquee with the aim of attracting some new members. I must end this article on a sad note. I have to inform readers and club members past and present of the passing of one of our popular members, Bill Hansell. Bill had been a member for a number of years and was an excellent and successful photographer, his name engraved on many of our trophies. He was always willing to give of his time and experience to those lesser mortals in the club. He would always be amongst the friendly jousting bouts between members and their specific marques of equipment, Nikon v Canon v Sony etc. but as most will agree, it’s not the camera but the person behind it ! r Open fo & s s busine g in r e adh ty fe a s o t es guidelin

GARSTANG MEDICAL CENTRE We really could not do it without you. Also grateful thanks to Garstang Town Council and Kepple Lane Park Trust for giving permission for our staff members to park on the scout hut car park, therefore allowing sufficient space for our patients to attend the clinics. Covid Testing As a practice we are experiencing and expecting to see a further increase in respiratory illness including coughs, fevers, colds and sore throats as well as Covid cases. If you experience symptoms of Covid (fever/temperature, new cough, loss of taste or smell) it is still really important to isolate and book a PCR test online or by ringing 119. This is the case even if you have been vaccinated. Please do not ignore possible symptoms. Telephone Access We are aware that patients are having
difficulty getting through to the surgery by telephone at peak times. Our services are currently under extreme pressure from an unprecedented demand. This is being experienced by practices nationally as well as locally. This is no doubt, in part, due to the restrictions imposed by the lockdowns which have led to some patients postponing health care until recent months. It is also due to the restrictions we have had to impose at the surgery due to Covid. Patients are asked not to come to the surgery to book appointments or raise queries at the reception desk as we need to minimise footfall into the surgery in order to maintain the building as Covid safe. This obviously puts greater pressure on the telephone system and patients are having to queue for much longer than we would like. Please do try to avoid calling the surgery in the morning if you do not require an appointment or home visit. We do apologise for the difficulties patients are facing and would like to reassure you that we are actively recruiting and training new staff in order to address these access problems and would ask for your patience in the interim. Minor Ailments As the weather improves don’t let minor ailments like hay fever ruin your plans Pharmacists are healthcare professionals that can offer advice and provide over-thecounter medication for minor ailments like hay fever, sunburn, upset stomach, aches and pains. Hay fever is a common allergic condition that affects up to one in five people at some point in their life. Symptoms include: sneezing, a runny nose and itchy eyes which you’ll experience if you have an allergic reaction to tree pollen (released during spring), grass pollen (released during the end of spring

GARSTANG MEDICAL (cont) and beginning of summer) or weed pollen (released late autumn). There’s currently no cure for hay fever, but most people can relieve symptoms with treatment. The most effective way to control hay fever is to avoid exposure to pollen, however this is very difficult, particularly during the summer months when you want to spend more time outdoors. Treatment options for hay fever include antihistamines, which can help to prevent an allergic reaction from occurring and corticosteroids (steroids), which help to reduce inflammation and swelling. You usually only need to contact your GP surgery if: •
you can’t control your symptoms with over-the-counter medications, or you have troublesome side effects caused by the medication
• •
you’re experiencing persistent complications of hay fever, such as worsening of asthma or repeated episodes of sinusitis the pattern of your symptoms is unusual, such as occurring during the winter or only at your workplace (it’s likely that another substance other than pollen is responsible, and further testing will be needed to confirm this)

It was disappointing news to hear that lockdown rules will remain in place until at least Mon 19th July. This will be a disappointment for many and will cause more problems for all sorts of businesses. We can all do our bit by wherever possible buying local. We have many great local businesses at the heart of our town and around our district. Town Council Vacancies If you have been keeping up with town council notices you will have seen that we have two vacancies on the town council. Wyre Council has informed the town council that ‘the last time for a request for an election to be held to fill the vacancies on the town council had passed and there was no request received’. This being the case, the elections rules require the town council to co-opt two people to fill the vacancies as soon as practicable. Would you like to become a Garstang Town

Greater Garstang Partnership Board The town council working with Wyre Council have established the Greater Garstang Partnership Board and we are fortunate to have Jan Finch in the role of chairman. Many of you will know Jan for the great work she has done in Wyre and Catterall. The board is tasked with developing a strategic plan for Garstang and the surrounding district. It has a very broad remit and will look at anything and everything that can bring benefit to the future success of the area. It will be looking for involvement from all parts of our community, business and social, with strong focus on enhancing what Garstang and district has to offer. The Board replaces the Market Town Working Group Strategic team which was being led by Cllr Pearson. I expect there will be regular updates on the progress the board is making in this magazine.
Remembrance Sunday We are currently planning for Remembrance Sunday which despite being 5 months away will quickly come round. Following the Lancashire County Council elections in May earlier this year, a number of changes to Wyre’s Cabinet have been made. Councillor Alan Vincent has been elected Deputy Leader of Lancashire County Council with responsibility for Resources, HR and Property. Councillor Vincent has therefore stepped down as Deputy Leader of Wyre Council and Portfolio Holder for Resources. Taking his position on Wyre’s Cabinet and Deputy Leader position is Councillor Michael Vincent. Councillor Alice Collinson has also joined Wyre’s Cabinet as Portfolio Holder for Planning Policy and Economic Development. Commenting on the changes, Councillor Michael Vincent said, ‘I sincerely look forward to taking on the role of Deputy Leader at Wyre and working with officers and councillors in my role as Resources Portfolio Holder. ‘In my career as a councillor I have been fortunate enough to work on some fantastic projects and I look forward to continuing this as your Deputy Leader.’ Councillor Alan Vincent, commented, ‘I will deeply miss my role as Wyre’s Deputy Leader and Resources Portfolio Holder, but I look forward to my new role as Deputy Leader of Lancashire County Council. ‘I hope that I can help bring about great changes to the whole of Lancashire and add a Wyre perspective to the county’s Cabinet.’ Councillor Alan Vincent remains a Wyre Councillor for the Victoria and Norcross ward. Councillor Alice Collinson, the new Portfolio Holder for Planning Policy and Economic Development, commented, ‘I look forward to working with officers and councillors on some fantastic projects including Project Neptune which will see a new fish and food processing facility built on the Fleetwood Docks. ‘I previously held the position of Mayor for

The public are now able to view and provide feedback on the proposed constituencies as part of an eight-week consultation process. The 2023 Review of Parliamentary constituencies was formally launched in January this year. The Commission is required to ensure that the number of electors in each constituency is more equal; in doing so, the number of constituencies in England will increase from 533 to 543. The Commission is undertaking an independent review of all constituency boundaries in England and will
present final recommendations to Parliament by July 2023. Publication of the initial proposals today is the first time people get to see what the map of new constituencies might look like. The rules that the Commission work to are such that wide scale change is inevitable. Under the proposals announced today, just under 10% of the existing 533 English constituencies remain unchanged. Members of the public are encouraged to visit www.bcereviews.org.uk/node/6487 to view maps showing the proposed new boundaries for the North West and provide feedback before the consultation closes on Mon 2nd Aug. People can comment on anything from where the proposed new boundary lines are to the names of the constituencies. There will be a further two rounds of consultation in 2022. Following the conclusion of all three consultation periods, the commission will

Tim Bowden, Secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said: ‘Today’s proposals mark the first time people get to see what the new map of Parliamentary constituencies might look like. But they are just the Commission’s initial thoughts. Help us draw the line to make the number of electors in each Parliamentary constituency more equal. ‘Each constituency we recommend is required by law to contain between 69,724 and 77,062 electors, meaning there will be significant change to current boundaries. ‘We want to hear the views of the public to ensure that we get the new boundaries for Parliamentary constituencies right. Have your say on our online consultation portal’. See www.bcereviews.org.uk www.wyre.gov.uk
WYRE FLOOD ACTION GROUP I joined other flood forum members in June for the quarterly meeting (held remotely) and took part in discussions on familiar topics with paid officers from the Environment Agency, Lancashire County Council, Wyre Council and Natural England and members of the local flood forums from river towns and villages. There are issues concerning Churchtown, St Michaels, Great and Little Eccleston, Out Rawcliffe, Hambleton, Preesall and Thornton Cleveleys which officers are studying and finding solutions for. Cleaning and maintenance of the natural and built drainage system is at the heart of much of the debate. The list of issues and actions produced for each meeting demonstrates the revolving nature of drainage and flood prevention.

WYRE FLOOD ACTION GROUP (cont) There is always something to repair, for example a drain beneath the A586 at Churchtown which issues into the Wyre will necessitate over night closure in July to deal with a suspected blockage. The west gate of the Garstang Flood Storage Basin is due to be replaced and work on the re lining of a 900ml drain in Green Lane East by contractors continues. In the meantime, United Utilities strives to maintain water quality for Wyre and coastal residents. Take a look at the following article to find out more...

THE PROBLEM WITH PESTICIDES Franklaw Water Treatment Works provides drinking water for an estimated 650,000 people living in the Fylde, Preston and the Ribble Valley areas. The treatment works utilises water from a variety of sources, including the river Wyre. The standards for drinking water are necessarily high and to help treat the water effectively a range of chemicals are monitored in the untreated water, pesticides being one of them. In recent years, the number of detections of pesticides has increased. Before being delivered to our houses, pesticides must be removed from the water at the water treatment works, which is an expensive process resulting in increased operational costs, power consumption and carbon impact. Pesticides are frequently used in the Wyre catchment to improve land for livestock pasture and to control weeds on roads, railway lines, parks and in gardens. Two pesticides which are commonly found within the River Wyre are MCPA, which is often used to control rushes, nettles and thistles,

PROBLEM PESTICIDES (cont) and Diazinon, an insecticide used to treat parasites of sheep such as blow-fly, ticks and lice. Even small amounts of these chemicals can pollute several kilometres of river. They can enter watercourses via surface water flows or through drainage channels and subsurface drains, which is particularly likely if they are applied just before heavy rainfall. Pesticides can also enter watercourses directly due to spillages, improper disposal, or from spray drift in windy conditions. The insecticide diazinon can also enter watercourses via leaks from the baths which sheep are dipped in during treatment or drips from treated sheep. Pesticides, if used incorrectly or carelessly can be damaging to the environment. For example, at a high enough concentration, diazinon is highly toxic to aquatic insects such as caddisflies, mayflies and freshwater shrimp. Healthy populations of these species are vital for a healthy river; they provide important ecosystem functions such as decomposition and provide a food source for a wide range of fish and birds, some of which are protected species in the Wyre catchment and across the UK. Research has also shown that at high concentrations diazinon can damage the olfactory systems of Atlantic salmon, which can impact their migration ability. Since 2018 the Wyre Rivers Trust have been working with United Utilities, the Environment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming to monitor concentrations of certain pesticides within the upper Wyre catchment. This has involved taking water samples at 20 sites on the Wyre and its tributaries during the summer months and into autumn when pesticide use is at its highest. In 2020: •
seven different herbicides and one insecticide were detected, including one
which is not licensed for use in the UK •
80% of samples tested for herbicides contained one or more herbicide
•
40% of samples tested for herbicides contained concentrations that meant treatment would be required in order to make them safe to drink
•
50% of samples tested for insecticides contained diazinon
•
Concentrations of pesticides were particularly high at Dolphinholme, Street Brook and Foxhouses Brook
We have also been engaging with a range of pesticide users to improve understanding around the use of pesticides, to try and reduce the amount of pesticides used and ensure that best practice is followed when using these products. Here are some tips for using pesticides on your land or in the garden:

Do not use within 6m of any watercourse
•
If you do find you have left over solution, find a patch of permitted plants or weeds to spray the excess onto. Do not pour it onto bare soil where it can build up in groundwater
•
Do not use surface water drains to dispose of unwanted pesticide. They often lead straight to the river

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) PC Kev Berry On a non-Covid subject, I would like to wish PC Kev Berry a very happy retirement from policing. Kev has been the Poulton and Over Wyre neighbourhood police officer for a number of years and I have always found him approachable and helpful. I was lucky enough to ride with Kev around his area during a patrol and witnessed first hand his enthusiasm and professionalism. As well as undertaking all the usual work we expect of police officers, I often came into contact with him when he was helping in matters which many of us wouldn’t usually consider to be police work, such as helping people with mental health problems, homeless people and checking on the welfare of older people. Kev will be missed. I am sure I am speaking

A big congratulations to her and her team for setting up this muchneeded resource. They have recently become a ‘not for profit community interest company’ and they hope to continue and expand both the services they offer and the geographical area they cover. Last week the team helped 52 families out with food and shopping for residents that couldn’t get out. They provided free foodbank parcels to 21 families (68 individuals) and Foodshare to 23 families (82 individuals).

Congratulations to all involved. Children & Young People The debate I was taking part in focussed on a health crisis that is making many young people’s lives intolerable. Recent data from NHS Digital suggests that one in six young people has a probable mental health disorder which can have far reaching impacts on young people’s educational outcomes, their future earnings and their relationships. According to the charity, YoungMinds half of all mental health problems manifest by o We als ton in s g lo supply of logs & ets bags, n firegrates g, n li d e kin h mor & muc
the age of 14 and 75 percent by the age of 24. Nearly half of 17-19 year olds with a diagnosable mental health disorder has selfharmed or attempted suicide at some point, rising to 52.7 percent for young women. And yet less than one in three children and young people with a diagnosable mental health condition get access to NHS care and treatment. In a YoungMinds survey, three-quarters of parents said that their child’s mental health had deteriorated while waiting for support from child and adolescent mental health services. In total, less than one percent of the total NHS budget is spent on children and young people’s mental health services. CAT SMITH MP (cont) almost tripled since 2010 and the impact of Covid on children and young people has been profound. Labour’s ‘Children’s Recovery Plan’ includes funding for schools to deliver new extracurricular clubs and activities to boost wellbeing, targeted support for children who have missed out most and an extension to free school meals to eligible pupils this summer. Our proposal would be to deliver small group tutoring for all who need it, not just the one percent currently being supported. We

would provide quality mental health support in every school with access to qualified inschool counselling staff alongside boosting wellbeing through extra activities. We’d ensure the continued development for teachers by supporting them with training to stay on top of the latest knowledge and techniques so that we can give every child a brilliant classroom experience. We’d also offer an education recovery premium, supporting every child to reach their potential by investing in children who have faced the greatest disruption during the pandemic from early years to further education and we’d double the pupil premium for children in key transition years, delivering additional support for children who need it most. Finally, and most importantly, we’d ensure no child goes hungry. We must match the ambition children have for their own futures and put them at the heart of our national recovery. This is an investment that our children’s futures and the future of our country depends on. Several charities have joined together to call for a systematic approach to supporting young people’s mental health, to ensure that young people get the support when they need it and before they reach crisis point. I hope the government listens and acts on their request for a network of hubs across the country, where young people would be able to go without an appointment or referral and get advice and support for their mental health and other issues that are affecting them. Keep in Touch Have a lovely July and do please get in touch if there’s anything I can help you with. Cat Smith MP t: 01253 490440 e: cat.smith.mp@parliament.uk

On July 1st I shall be 82 years of age with nearly 50 years in the window blinds business. I think it’s time to retire! The business is due to cease trading at the end of June 2021, however negotiations are currently taking place that may enable it to carry on under new management. Jean, who has worked with me since 1987 is also looking forward to retiring. She has been a real stalwart, part of the fixtures and fittings. She is not only good at making blinds, but has been a good ambassador, always cheerful and helpful on the phone. I would like to thank all of my customers who have dealt with me over the many years. It’s been a real pleasure meeting so many intersting people and enjoying so many thousands of cups of teas etc! Thanks again.

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (cont) As I write, a young Danish footballer, Christian Eriksen, is in hospital after collapsing very publicly on the pitch during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 game against Finland. Thankfully his condition is said to be stable as a result of the wonderful immediate medical response. Whilst this recognises the important role of rapid CPR and use of defibrillators, it is also essential to note that the majority of collapses and sudden cardiac arrests happen at home when people are alone, resting or asleep. Undoubtedly proactive screening can and does save lives, as our events at Garstang have mercifully verified, and we are so thankful for that. CRY’s own research has shown that testing young people between the ages of 14 and 35 has lead to an 89% reduction in Young Sudden Cardiac Deaths (YSCD) which is
an absolutely outstanding achievement, but what about the agony and suffering of that remaining 11%? We understand that no screening programme is ever going to be foolproof but, as a family who have lost someone so precious to this silent killer and have no answers as to why he died, we feel further research is unquestionably vital in reducing this figure too and hope it won’t be too long before the fund is in a position to give some practical support towards CRY’s valiant efforts. We’d love to know your thoughts on this so if you see us out and about stop and have a chat or contact us on the details below. to make a big impact. 1. Reduce emissions: Use your car less, whenever possible. 2. Save energy: By being careful how we use home appliances, we can save energy and, of course, money at the end of the month. 3. Put the 3 R’s of sustainability into practice: Reuse, Recycle, Reduce 4. What about your diet? Eat low-carbon. Eat food that is local and in season: read the label and eat food that is produced in the area, avoid imports which create more emissions due to transportation. Also, eat seasonal items, to avoid less sustainable production methods. Avoid excessive packaging and processed foods as much as possible. 5. Act against forest loss: Plant a tree! Throughout its life, it can absorb up to a ton of CO2. 6. Make demands from the government: Demand that they take measures toward a more sustainable life. Regional Activity June also saw another regional meeting (again remotely). All the clubs were asked to do a short presentation on what they had done for climate change. When we went through our projects, I think it’s fair to say we were really proud of our achievements and even prouder when Joan put them together into a short video. It was really interesting to see what all the other clubs in the north west region have been doing – seeing where we are undertaking similar activities and to get ideas for potential new projects.

Sing Together at Last
Remote Singing Sessions
Last month Lancaster Singers met for the first time in 448 days to sing together in person.
We would like to extend an invitation to anyone out there who would like to join us for our remote singing sessions.
The rehearsal was in the playground of Bowerham Primary School. This was a longawaited and joyful event which was evident from the smiles on members’ faces as they sang. The pandemic has prevented the choir from singing together in person but they have met almost weekly on Zoom to learn, rehearse and keep in touch with one another. Throughout the past year, the director of music, Duncan Lloyd directed the Zoom singing and has created rehearsal tracks to help members learn their parts. The chair, Chris Haughton organised the sessions, as well as social events. The singers had not heard each other sing since March 2020 and it was wonderful to hear their voices joining together. They were accompanied on piano by Ian Tate. The weather couldn’t have been better and there was a lovely background of bird song in the evening sunshine. A small committee had taken great care to ensure all the Covid security guidelines were observed and although this meant that singers had to be seated appropriately distanced and had to avoid singing loudly, it didn’t take anything away from the enjoyment. The director of music, Duncan Lloyd was unable to attend so members of the choir stepped up to the podium to conduct familiar pieces that
It is as yet uncertain when the Lancaster Singers will be able to meet in person indoors but at least this gave us one opportunity to sing together.
You will need to have a device with internet connectivity and my husband and I will fully support you, if you are unfamiliar with the technology. Words and music are provided through your computer/tablet/laptop and there is no cost for joining in. Our sessions are held on Tuesday afternoons

He enjoys treat time and will often approach you to take food directly from your hand. Grogu is looking for a female bunny who will provide him with much needed companionship.
We suspect that he may have been attacked by another cat leaving him with a painful bite wound on his leg. Following cage rest and pain relief, Dawson now has all four paws on the floor and is very keen to find a loving home. He is such an affectionate and friendly boy who loves a fuss so he is looking for a home where he will be the centre of attention.
Tetley came into our care after his previous owner was no longer able to care for him. He lived with an un-neutered male rabbit in his previous home
On arrival, he was very unsure but as the weeks have gone by, his confident and loving nature has really shown itself and he has found his voice too. Dawson is looking to be the only pet in the household and his new home will need to be able to offer him safe outdoor access away from busy main roads/ railway tracks as this boy cannot wait to go off and explore his new neighbourhood and garden. However he would need to be kept in for at least six weeks before this happens. Grogu arrived in our care after being removed from a multi-rabbit household. A ground-breaking new initiative that will improve the health and wellbeing of employees across Lancashire has received a multi-million pound funding boost today, Thursday 10 June.UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) healthy ageing challenge fund has given Ј3 million to an Active Lancashire led project which will upskill gym and leisure centre employees to conduct physical and mental health screenings in workplaces across the county.

Wyre Council, in partnership with Fylde Coast YMCA will be delivering health screenings across the borough over a three-year period. The Workplace Health Screening Project will target businesses with employees aged 50+ and SMEs that experience lower levels of productivity as a result of poor employee health. The screening tool and associated training programme have been developed by specialists from the University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan) School of Medicine and are consistent with the approach used in NHS medical practices to identify conditions that can lead to poor health in later life. Businesses will then be offered a range of supportive interventions for employees, based on the outcomes of the screenings, encompassing both physical and mental health support. The interventions will be delivered by a range of Lancashire-based providers and will empower employees with the tools to improve their overall health, whilst employers will benefit from increased productivity and resilience within their workforces. The project brings together a range of local and national partners and forms part of the wider ‘Business Health Matters’ programme which helps SMEs understand how they can support their staff; an issue that has been identified in a survey of more than 400 local business over the last 12 months.

WORKPLACE HEALTH (cont) Adrian Leather, Chief Executive of Active Lancashire, said: ‘Business Health Matters represents a huge opportunity for Lancashire businesses to improve the health and wellbeing of their employees and to contribute to Lancashire’s economic recovery following the pandemic. Poor health results are responsible for half of the lost productivity in Lancashire, valued at Ј650 million, as well as the early retirement of 24,000 skilled workers who leave employment at least a decade before their planned retirement date. ‘By working with the innovative partners on this project, we are able to offer high quality, local and low-cost workplace health screenings and contribute to retaining valuable skills in the workforce, improving staff satisfaction and reducing long-term business disruption costs in businesses across Lancashire.’ Professor StJohn Crean, UCLan’s Pro ViceChancellor (Research and Enterprise), said: ‘We’re delighted this project has been backed with Ј3m in national funding because it will improve the mental and physical wellbeing of thousands of employees within Lancashire, contributing to the region’s economic prosperity and working towards achieving the levelling up agenda.
