3LS It has been a long time since we have been able to meet as a group, but there is now light at the end of the tunnel. If all goes to plan we hope to be able to meet in September. There will be some members who will be looking forward to meeting with friends again and other who are not sure if this is right for them at this time. In the September edition of Focus Magazine we hope to be able to give more details of the meeting, when we look forward to a relaxed afternoon of fellowship.

everyone. New members will be made very welcome, so come along, no obligations and see if what we offer appeals. Ruth Rendle 01926 602006.

GARSTANG VOLUNTEER FORCE The Garstang Volunteer Force has been very busy this year. Over 70 of our volunteers have been helping Garstang Medical Practice with their Covid vaccination clinics.

As many members as possible will be contacted with the date as soon as one has been arranged. There is no pressure for any member to feel they have to come and Jack (01926 238075) is happy to chat to anyone who feels unable to join us in September.

We have helped with over 60 clinics and our volunteers have been there through all weather since early 2021.

For any reader who is wondering what 3Ls stands for, it’s ‘life long learning’. Our monthly meeting provides a variety of speakers on a wide range of topics; in fact something for

As Covid restrictions come to an end we will be closing down our service, but rest assured if we are needed in the future we will be there. Stay safe everyone.

We are so proud of all those who volunteered, they have really helped to make a difference to the local community.

The Covid restrictions meant that it was a different style to previous breakfast clubs in that you had to sign in, wear a mask when moving about, sit at the table you were designated and everything was waiter service. These new rules did not spoil what was a very enjoyable event and it was pleasing to see some new faces, all of whom said they were looking forward to the next one in August. with heraldic banners hung along the street, depicting the coats of arms of various local families, Greenhalgh Castle, and the market cross. We have begun a project to research and reproduce these banners and rehang them on the high street. Poppy Trail In 2018 we devised a Poppy Trail throughout the rural district, placing a poppy plaque at significant locations. These included war memorials, churches, memorial halls and other places connected to WW1. This was launched in time for the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 in November 2018. Each plaque contains a unique QR code which can be scanned with a smartphone for information about the particular location. We have since expanded the trail to include sites related to WW2 and beyond, including the newly erected War Memorial at Cabus. Research is ongoing. We welcome information about locations that could be included on the trail. Do you know anywhere? GARSTANG IN BLOOM I’m writing this before our judging date for the North West in Bloom competition so I can’t comment on how it all went. However I can issue a large thank you to everyone who helped to get Garstang looking at its best for the big day. This didn’t just include preparing the plants and floral displays, of course, but more mundane tasks such as getting the ‘furniture’ clean and the streets free of weeds and litter.

on Park Hill Road and the placement of a memorial stone to Norah Hoyles. Both tasks were delayed because of restrictions during the Covid pandemic.

Thanks also go to the local tradesmen who volunteered to paint the planters in Cherestanc Square for us and to the shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants who have created some lovely floral displays.

The Norah Hoyles Garden now contains her memorial stone and plaque to finish off this special place for her family and the Bloomers.

The old wooden surrounds of the raised beds were beginning to rot and crumble, not surprising as they were getting on for twenty years old. We’ve replaced them with robust railway sleepers which give a neat and more modern look.

The Bloomers relaxed after judging with drinks at the Royal Oak then enjoyed a lunch together the following week at the Apple Store Cafe.

If you would like to join in with our gardening activities, please come along to the car park on the High St at 9:30am on Wednesdays. You don’t have to know anything about gardening and you’ll be given a good welcome.

Other jobs that have been completed this summer are the renovation of the raised beds

FAIRTRADE Fairtrade Town Renewal Attaining Fairtrade status is an amazing achievement. However, it is just a milestone on the journey as a Fairtrade community as Fairtrade status should be renewed every two years. Incredible achievements have been realised nationally and internationally, thanks to the support and action of Fairtrade communities. The growth in Fairtrade product sales and awareness, catalysed by Fairtrade groups taking action locally, has influenced shopping habits and policies at local and national levels. However, there is still a lot to be done before all trade is fair. Our local campaign, along with hundreds of others, plays a key role behind this national effort. It’s important to maintain and grow

this activity so that new supporters and organisations join the movement, greater awareness is raised and more producers can benefit from Fairtrade. Our completed renewal form has been sent off to the Fairtrade Foundation. Future Meetings It is hoped we can once again start our meetings open to everyone. We are just looking for a suitable location. Keep an eye on our Focus articles and our Facebook page for details. AGM We have provisionally agreed to hold our AGM followed by an ordinary meeting on the Wed 25th Sept at 10:00am – venue to be confirmed. Activities There is a fundraising event at Scorton

Local schools have been contacted and we have already received requests to conduct assemblies. We are looking to put on a display during the week to illustrate the adverse effects of climate change and how Fairtrade is addressing the issues. The group is looking to create one of our ever-popular quizzes to run alongside the display. At the Royal Lancashire Show, from Fri 30th July - Sun 1st Aug, we will be celebrating, encouraging and promoting Fairtrade

throughout Lancashire. Visit our stand in the mall to learn more. Browse and buy a selection of Fairtrade goods. Take part in our raffle. Play the chocolate game. Sample some products. GARSTANG MEDICAL CENTRE Appointment System The Covid pandemic has generated unprecedented pressure on NHS services. Garstang Medical Practice has not been immune to the problems created by these pressures. Understandably, following all the messaging put forward during the pandemic, patients have delayed contacting NHS services and clinical problems have been ‘stored up’ over the course of the pandemic. As a consequence, there is now a huge

GARSTANG MEDICAL (cont) back log of work presenting to general practice. Demand on our appointments is consequently at an unprecedented level. In addition, we are seeing a significant increase in the number of patients with Covid related symptoms seeking our help, including those with ‘Long Covid’ symptoms. We are also seeing a large increase in the number of patients, particularly children, with respiratory type illness. We are also regularly facing work force shortages with staff having to self-isolate which puts additional pressure on our already stretched services. Our clinical staff must make the safety and welfare of our patients our overriding priority. To ensure this we must make sure we are able to provide safe and effective clinical care. We are at a stage now where we feel our workload is such that we are likely to be working beyond a safe level given the realistic constraints of our practice.

As such we are going to return to the ‘same day’ access appointment system. This will provide a safe, efficient, and equitable service to our patients. It means that when you need an appointment with a GP or nurse practitioner, you will need to ring on the day; you will not be able to book ahead for a routine appointment. Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group commission and organise walk-in centre services for all our patients. You can access these services at two local centres; Royal Preston Hospital Walk in Centre and Whitegate Drive Walk in Centre, Blackpool. The walk-in centres can deal with many common problems. When all our same day appointments are fully booked you will be advised to ring back on another day, or to go to a local walk-in centre. We hope signposting patients to walk-in centres proves a positive and efficient way

GARSTANG MEDICAL (cont) for you to access good quality healthcare in a local setting. By doing so, you are helping us to provide robust GP service for groups of patients whose healthcare needs make them more vulnerable. We are confident you will be supportive of our practice as we do our utmost to serve our patients in these challenging times. However, we must unfortunately point out that this support is not universal in our patients. Our staff are doing their very best in very difficult circumstances and verbal abuse, rudeness or an aggressive or demanding manner will not be tolerated to any member of our team. Unfortunately, such behaviour is now being experienced by our staff on a daily basis. It is simply not acceptable. Please show staff the respect they deserve – any problems you may encounter are not their fault. As a reminder, all our telephone calls to reception are recorded.

It is important to note that this current situation is not due to a shortage of doctors or nurses. We have more now than we had prior to the pandemic. It is simply down to increased demand at all levels of the NHS. We would also like to remind patients of simple selfcare measures which should be tried prior to accessing our services. Our website has information regarding all of these or you can visit the NHS website www.nhs.uk We hope the above measures are a temporary stage. We are sorry that we are not currently able to offer the routine, prebookable appointments with our doctors and nurse practitioners which our patients have enjoyed for many years. As soon as we feel we are able to reinstate these systems we will do so. Face Mask Policy Although face masks are no longer a legal requirement, as a clinical healthcare setting, Garstang Medical Practice has decided that all staff and patients must continue to wear masks within the surgery until further notice. Infection rates of Covid are on the increase, especially in our locality, and we feel it is imperative that we protect our most vulnerable patients and our workforce. This is essential if we are to continue to provide patients with a local primary care service. The Delta variant is highly contagious and has the potential to spread quickly in confined areas. We simply cannot risk acting as a focus for infection. We thank patients for their understanding and co-operation. In the, hopefully unlikely, event that a patient refuses to respect this request, or if a patient is unable to wear a mask on medical grounds, they will need to be seen either in our car port or in a specific room within the Calder Suite. Covid Testing As a practice we are experiencing and

If you experience symptoms of Covid such as fever/temperature, new cough, loss of taste or smell, it is still really important to isolate and book a PCR test for Covid online or by ringing 119. This is the case even if you have been vaccinated. Please do not ignore possible symptoms. Covid Vaccination We have now completed our Covid vaccination clinics. Thank you to everyone who has supported the programme. We really could not have done it without the amazing volunteers and the whole community. With the increase of the Delta variant in our area it is very important that patients receive both doses of the vaccine as soon as possible once eligible. Please encourage all your family and friends who are eligible, but have not yet had their vaccinations, to please get booked in as soon as possible. Appointments are available throughout the area at the NHS vaccination centres for first doses (anyone aged 18+) and second doses. Please book your appointment at www.nhs. uk or ring 119. There are also a number of walk-in clinics across the area.

We begin our new year back at the Arts Centre on Wed 1st Sept at 7:30 pm. All are welcome, but there is a charge of £5 for nonmembers, which if membership is taken up, is deducted from the membership fee. Finally, and without mentioning the dreaded c---d word, we will have ‘opened up’ from Mon 19th July but I for one will remain vigilant in every respect. It will be a long time before

we can use the phrase coined by the Stones, ‘It’s all over now’. As I draw this to a close, I wish everyone a good summer but ask you all still to take care. Maurice Baker

ROTARY CLUB Garstang & Over Wyre After many months of hard work which started well before the Covid crisis, the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre was able to make significant donations to charities at home and overseas in June 2021. Calvert Trust Our Club was able to make a contribution of £1193.75 to support the Lake District Calvert Trust. This followed sponsored climbs by our members of Skiddaw and Blencathra. These funds were passed to the Rotary Club of Keswick who were coordinating a collection for the Calvert Trust from clubs in North Lancashire and Cumbria. Their target was £25,000 in support of a One Million pound deficit. The total raised by all Clubs was £32,000. Nepal

A similar project was organised by Garstang Rotary Club. A total of £4,725 was raised by Rotary Clubs in our district in support of the emergency Covid appeal by the Rotary Club of Gorkha. We have been working with the Rotary Club of Gorkha (a major centre for many Gurkha soldiers) for many years on water supply projects. The Delta Variant of Covid has spread rapidly in rural Nepal triggered by the enforced return of poor migrant workers from India. ROTARY CLUB (cont) equipment and personal supplies for people in an isolation unit which they have set up to try and control the spread of the virus. These people have no access to vaccinations or oxygen. Some of the money will fund the purchase of oxygen concentrators. Kenya Since 2008 the Garstang Rotary Club has been promoting the building of sand dams (a man-made aquifer) in seasonably dry river beds. They provide clean water and improve the local water table during the dry season. Rotary Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland have funded the construction of 60 sand dams to date, along with major improvements in land utilisation and farming. In June, on behalf of clubs in Cumbria and Lancashire we donated £10,000 to a new sand dam project. For all our projects we deal directly with the local Rotary Club and a charity organisation, ASDL (Africa Sand Dams Ltd). We have agreed to support the Nzeluni Earth Dam SHG (self help group). There are three villages involved: 1,272 people locally, 1,522 in the sub-location and 6,280 in the location. Thirty three per cent earn less than £21 per month and a further 33% less than £35 per month - so below the current UN defined poverty line of £40. They already have an earth dam but it does not take them out of poverty. The creation of an aquifer by the sand dam and improved farming methods will help to ensure the reversal of desertification. The total budget for the project is £39,589. Rotary has agreed to fund half - £19,794. To achieve this it will be combining funds from four Rotary UK districts. The balance will come from non-Rotary benefactors. Our Six Monthly Fund Raiser The Garstang Rotary 200+ Club draw took place in June via Zoom and witnessed by

SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives A month based around blossoming – we are gradually emerging back into the real world and everything seems to have a floral connection. Club Outing Our first trip out since lockdown and what a memorable occasion, not least because of the venue, Gresgarth Hall, Caton and all it had to offer. The sun shone (sort of), the laughter flowed and the gardens were stunning. The group photo doesn’t really do justice to the enjoyment of the trip. We were

all glad to be back to (socially distanced) face-to-face escapades – and for a chance to meet our two newest members in real life! This was an excellent venue for our first trip out as Gresgarth has a very big Sequoia tree (alongside a relatively small Soroptimist). In 1921, the first Soroptimist club, Alameda County was formed in California with over 80 business and professional women from in and around the city of Oakland. Their first project was to ‘Save the Redwoods’ – the great ancient trees which were being felled and the club lobbied the legislature, taking on powerful lumber companies and winning public support which resulted in a major portion of the forest being set aside as protected land that still exists today. Small steps, big difference. 100 Afternoon Delights Then to keep the floral theme, by the time

We really hope to have had a chance to sit out, soak up the sunshine, inspect Kathy’s stunning garden, chat and of course, partake in a scrumptious afternoon tea.

UN YOUTH PLATFORM (cont) and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to approve the support and reinstatement of a youth delegation to the UN and UNESCO headquarters in New York and Paris. If we are successful, a handful of youths shall be afforded the opportunity to participate actively in high-level international meetings on behalf of the group of people perhaps left behind the most over these past two years: young people like themselves. These delegates would spend several weeks each year attending UN conferences and reporting their findings and inspirational stories back to schools across the UK. So where does Wyre fit into this? I have just graduated from university and have been lucky enough to discover the wonderful community of Garstang and the surrounding area. My parents moved here from the Fylde whilst I was gone! Here, more than anywhere else, clearly shines the spirit of

humanitarianism – Garstang declared itself as the UK’s first Fairtrade town back in 2000. Whether it be through bonds of charity, of faith or caretaking for our natural landscape, there is a spirit across the Wyre that radiates the hopes of the UN Charter: a people committed to making their world a safer, cleaner, and more prosperous place for their children to live in. Wyre can be the springboard for a great reawakening of these ideals. But as we try to accomplish this, we need your grassroots support. As UNA-YP moves to form a local movement, we are looking for volunteers both young and established to aid us in our local campaigning activities. We are planning to hold a fundraiser for our delegate programme at Scorton Charity Teas on Sun 22nd Aug. How wonderful it would be to see you there and have help from members of our own community. This was raised from the sales of Garstang Lights scenic Christmas cards (both at Best wishes and at Houghton’s Garage), which featured fabulous photos of Garstang in winter, generously provided by Mike Coleran. The proceeds from sales of protective face coverings also went towards the total. For one Saturday in August, and another in September, town councillors will be manning a stand in the town, allowing anyone to pop by to discuss any issues they have or simply to find out more about what the town council do. We will also invite our Ward and county councillors so whatever the issue, the right person for the job is likely to be there. The dates are to be confirmed and the stand is expected to be pitched on Cherastanc Square, subject to agreement. We will share all the details ASAP. It has been a real frustration to be unable to meet in public so we are pleased to have this opportunity to get out and about and talk all things Garstang. We hope to see you there! Great news - the organisers of the Garstang Scarecrow Festival have requested the use of Moss Lane Park from the 1st to 3rd July 2022. The town council was unanimous in its agreement for the use of the park. We can all look forward to a fun time around Garstang and on Moss Lane Park next summer. All things being equal. BEN WALLACE MP As I sit to write this article England has moved to step four of the roadmap. While this is good news, we all still need to be cautious and use common sense moving forward. Locally, we have been very careful and listened to the advice from government and the NHS. We know how to minimise the risk and that is exactly what we must now do as part of everyday life. Whether that means wearing a mask at times, keeping a safe distance from others or getting used to washing your hands more often. Keeping ourselves and others safe must be our priority. Hot Weather I am pleased to say that we are experiencing some nice summer weather at the moment but, with the heat does come additional risk. Dr Owen Landeg from Public Health England advises, ‘Everybody can be affected by high temperatures and most people are aware of good health advice for coping with hot weather. However, it’s important to keep checking on those who are most vulnerable such as older people and those with heart and lung conditions.’ We all want to enjoy the nice weather but

For more news and advice on the current hot weather go to: www. england.nhs.uk/category/heat-alert Britain in Bloom With more of us looking to stay at home this year for our summer breaks, I am delighted to see many towns and villages preparing for Britain in Bloom. I know things are different this year, but, it is inspiring to see residents taking pride in their local area in this way. CAT SMITH MP Hello everyone. I hope you’re all enjoying a lovely summer. It’s been a very busy time in Parliament, leading up to the summer recess. Benefits Reform for the Terminally Ill I’m delighted that after three years of hard campaigning, the government has finally agreed to reform the benefits system for terminally ill people. I lost a close friend to motor neurone disease and was determined others shouldn’t have to face financial worries while living with a terminal illness. I’ve therefore been heavily involved with the ‘Scrap 6 Months’ campaign and finally, in response, the government has pledged to make it easier for people with a terminal illness to get fast-track access to

CAT SMITH MP (cont) financial support. This will include making it easier for clinicians to confirm eligibility. Crucially, the government has said it will reform the rule which stipulated that people must prove they have six months or less to live before receiving fast-track access to the benefits many desperately need.

12 district councils, two unitary authorities, Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Enterprise Partnership and a whole host of other influential, entrepreneurial and creative Lancastrians have worked collaboratively to put together a bid for the 2025 City of Culture competition.

This will make a huge difference to people with life-limiting conditions, easing financial worries in the last months of their lives and crucially allowing people to enjoy the time they have left with the people who matter to them. However, our fight isn’t over – we now need to push the government to implement this change as soon as possible.

Lancashire 2025 would have brought millions of inward investment, created thousands of new jobs, reduced the cultural and economic inequalities in our county and been an inspiring and exciting event for thousands of children.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) and scale of major arts organisations. Please, if you think this decision is wrong, write to Phillippa Williamson, the leader of Lancashire County Council and ask her to reverse the decision. Fleetwood Regeneration I’m very pleased to have been involved in putting together a bid for ‘levelling up’ funding from the government to begin the regeneration of Fleetwood. As has so often been proved, when one area like Fleetwood begins to regenerate it has a knock-on effect on neighbouring areas like Over Wyre. This summer, myself, along with Wyre Council and a whole host of talented partners, have submitted a request for £8.56m in the hopes the government will finally recognise that Fleetwood is in desperate need of support and funding. Last year the government announced it would invest up to £830 million to help areas recover from the pandemic and to help transform underused town centres into vibrant places to live, work and shop. Wyre Council submitted a bid for £22 million but on Boxing Day the government confirmed the council had been unsuccessful in attracting funding. This was utterly astonishing. There are wards in Fleetwood that are some of the most deprived in the country. At least 20 per cent of children live in poverty. More than a third of working age people have no qualifications and the town has the lowest life expectancy of 65 to 77 as shown on the index of multiple deprivation 2019. High rates of smoking cause high rates of lung disease and cancer, drug deaths, alcohol-related harm, significant levels of mental health issues and a high suicide rate all contribute towards people in Fleetwood living shorter lives.

up and I’m desperately hoping that this time around we’ll be more successful. The purpose of the Levelling Up Fund (LUF), announced at the 2020 Spending Review, is to invest in local infrastructure that has a ‘visible impact on people and their communities’. I hope the decision makers in London understand that this bid is absolutely critical if Fleetwood and neighbouring areas are to enjoy the same job opportunities, educational opportunities, access to services and transport links that other towns boast. Our proposal includes three projects focussing

CAT SMITH MP (cont) on Fleetwood Market, Fleetwood Museum and the Fleetwood Port Redevelopment site. The Fleetwood Market project would revive the derelict land just next to the market creating a new workspace for commercial creative business. The plans utilise repurposed sustainable shipping containers to create an interesting contrast to the adjacent Victorian Market Hall providing flexible start-up spaces for local businesses, classroom sites, meeting rooms and collaborative working spaces. The plans for Fleetwood Museum include a new visitor centre on the existing site allowing us to attract more visitors to the town. A new entrance will link Queens Terrace and Custom House Lane with the creation of a new ‘pocket park’. Fleetwood Port will see the redevelopment of derelict waterfront land with new flood defences to improve the seafront of the town by creating a coastal park for residents and

visitors. The vision is to revive this gateway into Fleetwood and provide waterside views across the estuary with new pedestrian and cycle routes along the coast and into the town centre – and the new flood defences mean new houses can be built – including affordable and specialist housing. I hope this will be the start of a new era for Fleetwood. For the last decade our coastal towns have been ignored and forgotten about. Whilst the Covid pandemic has been exceptionally challenging for everyone, there have been a few positives such as the potential for British holidaymakers to enjoy more staycations, meaning resorts like Fleetwood can once again aspire to becoming a popular destination. Let’s hope the decision makers in London agree. We’ll find out in the autumn if we’ve got through to the second round. Keep your fingers crossed! Cat Smith MP

BRAIN DEGENERATION Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia appear to be rampant in the western world. Many people, quite understandably, live in fear of such a dreaded diagnosis and of course, for those who stand by watching helplessly the stress and strain can be extraordinary. But did you know there are a whole host of things you can do to load the dice in your favour. Like all things to do with our bodily and mental health, the key to our future is in the palm of our own hands. The pharma companies have been chasing a magic drug that can remove what are called the amyloid plaques that have been observed as a feature of Alzheimer’s disease. There have been over 300 studies that have all failed. Whilst they have found a drug (aducanumab) that does reduce the plaques in the brain, unfortunately it fails to

deliver any improvement in cognition! However, there is now enormous evidence showing that a simple combination of B vitamins and Omega 3 causes significantly less brain shrinkage. Not only that but the study that found this, led by Professor David Smith at Oxford University, also found that memory loss ceased and 70% of the subjects were classed as zero on the clinical dementia rating. This simply means that much dementia is preventable with lifestyle changes and nutritional improvements. One important area is to avoid drugs that have a negative effect on your ability to absorb the right nutrients. The group I see massively over-prescribed and then allowed to be taken ad infinitum are the drugs used to tackle heartburn and hiatus hernias – omeprazole, lansoprazole, gaviscon et al.

BRAIN DEGENERATION (cont) These drugs are not safe for long term use. Please, if you struggle with acid reflux or heartburn consult an expert who can advise you how to change your diet because such acidic issues are often your body telling you to stop putting in something that does not agree with it. Commonly these are the pastries, cereals, breads and alcohol. Aside from the potentially serious illnesses caused by too much acid, suppressing your body’s stomach acids is the first step towards increasing your chance of dementia. You may take B vitamins and a myriad of other good things but the suppressive antacids will mean you simply do not absorb the right nutrients. Prevention is far better than cure and I would advise everyone to take a high quality B vitamin supplement – make sure it has B12 in it. Viridian do several excellent B supplements and you get money back on the bottle when

you return it to your health food store. Pharma Nord, Viridian and Nature’s Aid all do really good Omega supplements. Not forgetting that eating seafood is a good source of omegas. Other factors that are important in dementia type diseases are: a high sugar diet, a lack of antioxidants, including Vitamin C, good digestion (eat fermented food every day and take a probiotic), having an active mind and social life (another reason why the isolation of the last 18 months has been a health catastrophe the real cost of which will never be known), physical activity, good sleep and less stress.
