The Churchtown and District Children’s Whitsuntide Festival committee are having a fundraising Jumble Sale in aid of next year’s Churchtown Children’s Festival. The jumble sale will be held at Kirkland Memorial Hall, Churchtown PR3 0HR. Donations of jumble can be brought to the Hall from 8:30am to 10:00am on the morning of the sale. Entrance is £1.

Garstang United Reformed Church

The society will resume its monthly meetings in Sept following a two year break due to Covid restrictions and caution over re-starting due to ongoing Covid concerns. The speaker is Dr Bill Shannon of Fulwood who will give an illustrated talk on Richard Kuerden (1623–1702). Kuerden is regarded by many as ‘the father of Lancashire history’. A physician by training, he is now remembered as an active antiquarian, historian and map maker/surveyor. Dr Shannon is the author of the recent biography of Kuerden entitled ‘Seventeenth-Century Lancashire Restored’. Please arrive early for registration in the church hall (suggested from 6:45pm). Several alterations have been made to our website, including more images and a link to our Facebook page. Please take the time to have a look and let us know what you think as this is still ‘a work in progress’. If you would like to make any comments please do so through our website.

Firstly, the dipper is back and is looking so fresh. It’s much larger than before and looks absolutely stunning against its ‘green’ backdrop. Once again, our thanks go out to all those who helped us raise the funds needed. Secondly the path, that was too close to the riverside edge, has been diverted, making it much safer for our visitors.

We have a guest speaker from Edgmond Wines in Shropshire. They specialise in wines from boutique South African wineries. The wine industry in South Africa has gone from strength to strength over recent decades. The climate in parts of the country is ideal for growing grapes and the result is a range of quality wines. The meeting will give members an opportunity to sample wines from some of the smaller growers, and we anticipate an interesting and entertaining evening.

Our first exhibition fittingly will be ‘The Story of Booths in Garstang’. We would like to thank Wyre Borough Planning, Booths themselves, past staff and anyone else who has contributed to the photos. Be sure to come along and reminisce. September already! The painting group is functioning at full speed - or should it be at full colour under a hot summer sun. Although the weather has had its effect on numbers - some of us are wilting a bit - a determined few are battling on with a large variety of mediums and subjects. The in-house exhibition of members’ work has drawn to a close and is replaced by our Ron Coombes competition; one of the two main group competitions at the Garstang Arts Centre. It should be seen to appreciate the standard of work we are capable of! Almost all the paintings are for sale at very reasonable prices for that special unique gift for a friend or relative. The exhibition is free as you enjoy that cuppa in the cafe. So don’t miss this opportunity and meet the members on Wednesday afternoons between 1:00pm and 4:00pm. The 2022/23 programme of the Garstang and District Gardening Club starts on Tues 13th Sept, 7:30pm at the URC Hall, Croston Road, Garstang. Anyone with an interest in gardening is welcome to come along. The meeting will take the form of a practical demonstration on bonsai, the Japanese art of growing and training miniature trees in pots. The speaker is bonsai expert Ray Couldwell from Accrington. It will also be an opportunity to meet the club’s new chairman, Adrian Whitaker, who has taken over the position from previous chairman, Roger Broadbelt. Refreshments will be available and there will be a fundraising raffle. Enrolment for 2022/23 will take place. Visitor fee: £3. It won’t be until the end of October that the results are announced, so in the meantime, we still carry on with the gardening, of course, keeping things going through the autumn. We’re already making plans for next year. You’ll continue to see us out and about on Wednesday mornings so join us, please, if you have some time!

All appeared to go very well on our judging day for the North West in Bloom competition on Fri 5th Aug. After initial rain, the sun came out to light up the beds and floral displays so that Garstang looked its best. It was a long day for the judges, having visited the Woodlands community gardens on Oak Road, the Memory Cafe garden at the Library, Kepple Lane Park and the Millennium Green as well as walking around our town centre gardens. The two judges praised us for our hard work and said that they had enjoyed their day. Once again, a big thank you to all concerned. The following week, gardening tools and gloves were placed to one side as the Bloomers met in the garden of the Apple Store cafe in Scorton for a chat over drinks and lunch in the sunshine. Some of the more energetic ones did a two hour walk first over Nicky Nook and the surrounding countryside.

A big thank you to the residents who helped pick up litter, sweep up driveways, tidy their gardens and generally made the village look gorgeous for our special visit by the RHS North West in Bloom judges in August. It made all the difference.

The judges, Bernard Pendleton, chair of North West in Bloom, and Stephen Lowe from BBC Radio Lancashire spoke to residents during their visit and even finished the morning with a chat on Sharon Hartley’s Radio show.

It has been a challenge to get them looking so amazing and they were at their best and full of bees when the judges toured, especially the wildflower bed on the top bank. It was a happy and proud day for the Bloom team and worth all the hard work to hear praise and encouragement for a good job. In the judge’s words ‘Catterall looks beautiful’ so we can only hope for a great result at the award ceremony in October. We are now into bulb planting season and the Bloomers will be planting snowdrops, bluebells, fritillaries and sowing wildflower seeds very soon. If you can spare an hour to help us plant the bulbs, then please get in touch or just turn up on Tuesdays at 10:00am at the park. We have new Catterall in Bloom hi-viz jackets thanks to Baxi Boilers, so it’s easy to find us! We are lucky to have such brilliant and dedicated volunteers, so why not join Catterall’s dream team - Catterall in Bloom!

The Bloom team had worked their socks off, supported by Paul, our Parish lengthsman, who watered the plants in the park very early each morning - so no wonder everywhere looked so good! Tim and his trusted Mr Wobbly, the water bowser, toured the containers around the village most evenings and did a great job of keeping the plants watered during the drought.

Tell them you saw their advert in the Garstang Focus Tues 20th Sept, 7:15pm Thank you everyone who attended our meeting in June, when we were shown a wonderful selection of plants by Jaqueline Iddon. It was a glorious summer’s evening and we learned a lot about the blooms Jacqueline showed us as she gradually made them into a beautiful bouquet. There was a chance to buy some of the plants we had been shown and it was a friendly and relaxed evening with a fantastic selection of home made cakes to go with tea or coffee at the end of the talk. Unfortunately our July meeting coincided with the hottest day ever and it meant that Gardening Club that evening was cancelled, as the flowers that were needed for the planned talk could not be picked and kept in good condition in such hot weather. We were also worried that a lot of people would not want to attend on such a sweltering evening. We are sorry if anyone was very disappointed, but the good news is that, at the time of writing, the planned talk for July will take place at our August meeting. Our meeting in September will be a talk by Guy Topping about the history of Barton Grange and The Flower Bowl. He will talk about how the garden centre has been successful in winning the Best Destination Garden Centre in 2022. This will be our last meeting for 2022 and it is amazing how quickly the summer has flown past. I hope you have all enjoyed the programme of interesting and varied talks, the plant sales, the raffle, the home made cakes and biscuits and, most of all, the chance to socialise and catch up with friends and neighbours. Meetings are on the 3rd Tuesday of the month in Catterall Village Hall. Cost is £3 per meeting, or £15 to become a member and attend all the meetings from March through to September. April

The Garstang Club had a recent AGM where it was decided to extend an invitation for membership to residents within Garstang and its surrounding areas who feel they might like to join Probus. The Club meets on the first Tuesday in the month at the Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Club for lunch followed by a speaker. The variety of interesting topics range across the spectrum – travel, pastimes, photography, etc. Additional activities may include visits to places or organisations of particular interest. The membership rules of Probus are simple, yet its rewards are manifest.

The word Probus is an amalgam of the two words PROfessional and BUSiness, but membership is not necessarily restricted to these two groups. It also embraces former executives of local government and of the arts and music, and, indeed, any person who has had some measure of responsibility in any field of endeavour.

The memory café provides regular ‘drop in’ meetings designed to give some support to those who are experiencing dementia symptoms, plus also help and advice for their carers and partners. All of these sessions take place in a very safe, sociable and supportive environment.

The memory garden area behind the library has continued to progress well and should provide a welcome shaded spot for both rest and quiet reflection. The raised beds and tubs have been filled by the Garstang in Bloom team and were visited recently by the judges on their regular local assessment visit. Some of the seating areas that will be available are in place already but with more planned in the colours chosen by our group.

In Aug we enjoyed a memorable canal cruise on the ‘Jungle Queen’ and a fish and chip lunch. The weather was kind to us with the sun shining so we could get out to admire the scenery and all agreed that the trip was a huge success.

‘Starting in Garstang’s high street, there were interested glances in various shops and food outlets. Soon we were beside the River Wyre trying not to disturb a song thrush enjoying a snail feed. Wyre Bridge presented us with a chance to imagine and remember times gone by: Wyre Cafe, the Corn Mill, Greenhalgh Castle and other points of interest.

‘As a relative newcomer to the Wyre District I’d like to share my experiences of the wonderful surrounding countryside which I’ve discovered since moving here.

‘Nature is always nearby. We observed and identified (in hope), flowers, plants, a dragonfly, moorhens and early signs of ripening elder, blackberry and hazel nuts. Conversations flowed throughout. Local, national and sporting events including the Lionesses triumph in the European Championships cropped up. We all had something to hear about, to offer or to learn.

‘By now we were catching views along the canalside at the Wyre aqueduct and the Tithe Barn. We tried to recall what was across the basin before the recent houses were built.

‘A recent Monday morning in Garstang and our small, friendly group of walkers were ready to depart on our latest walk. We had some new faces and some familiar ones and before long we were all chatting in the midmorning sunshine.

‘Thanks to the health and wellbeing walks, I’ve not only found many beautiful areas to walk but also met many like-minded people and made new friends. I would have found it difficult to navigate the various areas covered by the Council’s walks on my own.

‘The guided walks cover parts of Garstang and the surrounding areas too. They are free, cover approximately two miles and last about an hour. They are ideal for those who want to get out and about but don’t feel up to walking long distances. Very often a little café or pub is located for the well-deserved cup of tea or coffee at the end of the walk. It would be lovely to welcome more people to the walks who may not be aware that such a valuable service exists. For anyone who is interested in joining us, there is plenty of information on the Wyre Borough Council website. Alternatively, the Great Outdoors brochures are available throughout the borough in libraries, doctors surgeries, some shops and in the Visitor Centre in Garstang. The brochure lists all the walks throughout the year along with various other events.

‘Common sense is a flower that doesn’t grow in everyone’s garden.’ This is a phrase I came across recently. We’ve needed a lot of common sense recently. How to cope with the hot weather; how to conserve water even in Lancashire where we have been fortunate with our rainfall; how to be careful with Covid still spreading, but try to live in a new normal way; how to keep Britain tidy and not leave litter about like glass bottles, discarded BBQs and other rubbish which can so easily catch fire which then becomes devastating for so many people’s homes and livelihoods. What a responsibility we have for the world around us, on our doorstep and further afield. By the time the September edition comes out we will be into harvest season in the churches. We see the harvests being gathered in the fields around us and in our gardens too. At Calder Vale Methodist Church we will celebrate our Harvest Festival on Sun 18th Sept when Rev Derek Oldham will lead our morning worship at 10:45 am. The service will be followed by a light lunch.

This year we will be co-administering the Covid booster at the same time as the annual flu vaccine for those who are eligible to receive them. Whilst August was a quiet month for us – time to recharge our batteries - work didn’t fully stop. Fylde Coast Women’s Aid Our charity, The Fylde Women’s Refuge, is at the forefront of our minds and to this end we spent time putting together 30 pencil cases filled with pens, pencils and crayons to be given to the charity. The pens and pencils had all been previously donated for our Mary’s Meals backpacks and, with that scheme ending, we wanted to give them a good home. We are sure they will be put to good use –writing, drawing, list making, form filling or even noughts and crosses – when leaving home due to any type of violence – children rarely get to collect their belongings, so these cases provide a little normality.

We are also supporting our Regional charity, Tap Twinning with a fundraising event soon. 122 million people still drink water directly from sources such as rivers and ponds. The burden of collecting water mostly falls on women and girls who have to make long, dangerous treks every day. Unsafe water leaves people at high risk of water-borne diarrhoeal diseases. Water scarcity, made worse by climate change, means crops fail, food supplies dwindle and people remain trapped in poverty. The daily treks for water get longer. Think about how the UK has struggled recently and then imagine having to fight for water all the time! The fundraising details are being completed and will naturally involve food and drink, so keep an eye on our Social Media for more details. Events & Activities Lion members and their partners all enjoyed our annual bowling event in July with a barbeque meal provided by our ‘in house’ chefs. The winners of our two separate competitions were David Hodgson and Alison Lewis. Our congratulations to them both. I do understand that both are in training already to defend their titles next year. We organised the car parking again for the Garstang Show on Sat 6th Aug which proved to be an exceptionally busy day. The next car parking event will be on Sat 10th & 11th Sept for the Lancashire Game and Country Festival in Scorton and large numbers are expected over the two days. Rotary held the delayed drawing of the 200+ Club at the end of July. There were 9X£10 winners, 10X£25 winners and one winner of the top prize of £500. Congratulations to all the ticket holders with over £700 going to the club’s charity fund. The next draw will be held towards the end of December. You don’t have to be a Rotarian to join the 200 + Club, just contact the name at the bottom of this article. As past winners, the club hosted the final of the Rotary District 1190 (Cumbria and Lancashire) Quiz. Over 30 clubs took part on the quiz. Rounds were somewhat delayed because of Covid, but the finalists were Rotarians from Rossendale and Appleby. 30 or so Rotarians and friends enjoyed an evening of quizzing and friendship at the Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Centre. Appleby ended as winners in close competition.

Here’s Mike’s story in his own words: ‘On Mon 19th Sept I will set off on a four day, 260 mile bike ride to raise funds to provide free heart screening at Garstang Academy for local young people. Starting at Greenhalgh Castle in Garstang and finishing at Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, visiting a further 20 castles along the way - that’s 22 castles, the same number of years that Matthew lived before becoming a victim of Young Sudden Cardiac Death Syndrome. ‘My eldest brother, Keith, would have been 80 this year, but he died suddenly aged 38 with an undiagnosed heart problem. This ride is for Matthew and Keith. I will be riding solo with my wife providing car support. Every £60 raised will pay for a local young person to get a free heart screening locally, potentially saving a life. I have set my fundraising target at £600 - that will provide potentially lifesaving heart screenings for ten 15 to 35 year olds’. We wish Mike all the best with his endeavours and will be with him in spirit all the way. Little has happened of note in the Wyre and Cocker catchments but an extraordinary news story broke on Mon 27th June following heavy rain that led to severe flooding in urban Cleveleys, Thornton and Fleetwood which, in many ways, was a repeat of flooding in late September 2019. United Utilities reported that the sewer system was overwhelmed with the Post Office in Fleetwood Road North having to close and Cardinal Allan High School having to be evacuated because of the backing up of drains.

Rachel Crompton, Lancashire County Council Principal Flood Risk Officer, tells me that whilst LCC Highways, Wyre BC and United Utilities responded promptly to reports by anxious residents in Cleveleys, there were insufficient reports received by the County Council in its Statutory role as Lead Local Flood Authority to trigger the Council’s duty under Section 19 of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 which requires the LCC to investigate what actions the front line organisations have individually done with their resources to remedy matters.

The most helpful reports are emailed to: highways@lancashire.gov.uk giving a location, time and description of the impact.

As I have commented above, you will not find a Section 19 report of the events of Mon 27th June but I would recommend, nevertheless, a search on the LCC website; flood investigation report-Lancashire County Council which will bring up reports of previous incidents that hit the headlines. It might seem clichéd to say so but please help the council to help us all! Put these contact numbers in a handy place: Floods: 0300 123 6701. Highways: 0300 123 6780.

As we are all aware, Great Britain is a country of two halves with politicians beguiling us with stories of levelling up.

The message is, therefore, whatever the scale of flooding to your property, report it. I have read the county council’s policy and so can you. Search ‘Lancashire County Council Flood Investigation Policy’ online. It is only by acting together that we can make use of the resources at our finger tips.

A glance at the Lancashire County Council flood website will show waters lapping at the fronts of houses in Northumberland Avenue creating a boating lake literally from wall to wall as far as the eye could see. The scene was one of desolation with not a soul or vehicle Althoughmoving.isolated, this incident is a lesson for us all and highlights how flooding is monitored in the county and how essential is the part played by individual property owners and occupiers as well as local councillors.

The Grand Contour Canal

You may have read in the newspapers recently proposals to level-up the nation’s water supply by resurrecting a scheme which has remained on the drawing board since the second world war. In 1943, planners devised a method of transporting surplus water in the North to the sun-drenched shores of the home counties. The Grand Contour Canal would follow a contour down the spine of England at an altitude of precisely 310 feet. It would have no locks but several pumping stations along the route to get water into the canal and let gravity do the rest to get the precious commodity to the reservoirs of Southern England. It remains on the drawing board but the recent drought has

WYRE FLOOD FORUM (cont) brought it back in contention. It would bypass us very closely mimicking pipes carrying water between Thirlmere and Manchester across the Bowland Fells. All that needs to be done to get the water flowing is to agree the price of a bucket full! Twentieth century engineers are not the first to hit on schemes to transport water. Emperor Augustus’s Water Czar, Agrippa, would reshape the Roman system with Frontinus, (Governor of Britain AD 74-78) making sure it worked. Of Rome’s aqueducts, ‘cut and cover’ masonry channels, following the contours of the ground, made up 90% of the mileage with tunnels and arches only as necessary. The first aqueducts were in total 106 miles long. Rome was expanding fast and the need for water with it. Public bathing was popularreminiscent of today’s hot tubs - and more supply was demanded by affluent citizens. But in 125 BC only one inadequate aqueduct was added. Finally, Agrippa was appointed to get a grip on the situation and he repaired and added capacity to all existing aqueducts and extended distribution throughout Rome to a million cubic metres of water a day. Enter Frontious who knew the system intimately according to the surviving account he left us. He understood the need for making plans for all aqueducts so, as he said, he had everything before his eyes, understanding the volumes of water being carried, its rates of discharge, its purity and the need for regular shutdowns for repairs and diversions when demand varied. With his team of 700, yes 700, repair men he was especially hot on leaks and illegal tapping into the supply; ‘Compare’ he exclaimed, ‘the extensive structures of my network with the idle pyramids or useless, though famous, attractions of the Greeks!’. I also know headteachers are concerned by having to reduce their menus because they can’t afford or source the food they normally provide.

Over the last few weeks I’ve met with farmers, students taking part in the National Citizen Service, children who are members of our uniformed organisations, the RNLI, other charities and young people taking part in the Prince’s Trust. We had a tough fight on our hands over the gas storage proposal and fracking and we’ve proved that, here in Over Wyre, we have the resilience and the patience to keep on going because we know, that above all, these industrial developments should not be in the vicinity of residential areas.

We know so much more now about industrial diseases caused by toxic contaminants that affect the health of humans and the local ecology and wildlife. Sourcing the products to enable the building of new homes is necessary – but not if it leaves whole communities worse off, causing preventable illness and putting extra pressures on local healthcare providers.

Local Quarry Plans I continue to receive correspondence from residents in Preesall and Pilling opposed to the possibility of a quarry being built to mine for sand and gravel. I absolutely understand everyone’s concern and will continue to lobby on your behalf to stop the proposal going ahead.

Local people should have the right to determine what happens in the area where they live and raise their children. Three schools in the vicinity of a mine producing silica sand should be a red flag for any local Exposureauthority.

50 WALLACE MP I do hope you are enjoying or by now maybe have enjoyed the hot weather. While we don’t tend to get the extreme heat often in Lancashire, it has been an exception recently. My office have been extremely busy with passport applications recently and just to remind you the passport office advise that the processing times for applications is currently ten weeks. I know like me, many are also holidaying in this country this Locallyyear.this is resulting in an already busy road network being pushed to its limits at times. Of course, it is not helped by the Windy Harbour to Skippool A585 scheme which, at the moment has incoming traffic into Poulton blocked at the bottom of Breck Road. In turn this has a knock-on effect at the Singleton traffic lights with a lot of traffic turning down Garstang Road West and at times causing long tailbacks. I am told that Breck Road will be back to normal for the school term starting. Please keep your correspondence coming about these works. It is vital I hear your opinions so I can highlight them. My mailbag continues to be full of both local and national issues. One local issue is that a scoping document has been produced for a proposed quarry in Preesall. While just outside the constituency, many including myself are worried about its possible impact on local roads due to increased HGV movement, as a result, I will keep an eye on this.

Speeding and the condition of some roads and footpaths have been highlighted to me and in turn I am contacting both the police and Lancashire County Council. Following a number of concerns raised by constituents, I have also recently written to the Department of Health highlighting concerns for the provision of primary dental care in the constituency. The cost of living is a concern to us all and many are understandably worried about the impact of rising prices.
