President’s Message By Jon Wormley

As we enter the month of June, the greens on Barony will have their aeration completed and Robber’s Row is scheduled for mid-June. Of course, this is weather dependent. Aeration is critical and we must all understand the greens will be sandy and bumpy for up to two weeks following the aeration. Several of the greens will most likely get another “drill and fill” servicing to help improve the quality of the greens. The fairways are improving, and green grass is growing once again, but some areas are not so great. With tree and branch trimming to some greens, we are beginning to see the benefits. Miracles do not happen overnight, so please be patient. As a reminder, tee times change effective June 1st. A copy is posted outside of Jay’s office and tee sheets for the remainder of the year are in our portal. I anticipate there will be at least one more change in scheduling for 2022, likely in September or October. The Board continues to ensure all golfers are treated fairly and for those players that do not play in an Approved Tee Time group, tee times are available through the morning on the Member’s course.

On Thursday, June 16th, Barony will be the Member’s Course. All play for the day will start on Hole #10 and it will be like playing a new course, so beware of the water on the left. Our Social Committee continues to strive to present new and exciting events. I encourage every member to join in the fun each and every month. If you have any questions, please contact Anne Gerth, our Social Committee Chairperson. And coming to Port Royal from June 1 – August 10th, every Wednesday between 10am-2pm will be Low Country Made market operating on the lawn in front of the Heritage Administration Building. No food trucks will be allowed. Anticipating lots of visitors on those days, the Member’s Parking lot will be opened to non-members and non-Port Royal residents. Parking for our golf members should not really be impacted as the market opens at 10am and most members if not all have already teed off by then. If you think about visiting the market, consider riding your bike! As I wrote last month, in June, the Board will commence work on selecting this year’s Nominating Committee for next year’s Board. If you are interested or want to learn more, contact myself or any Board member.

For those of you that have headed back North and to those of us that stay here, enjoy your summer. Be safe.

Golf Report

By Bill Hazel While just playing the game of golf is fun for me, the time spent with your partners out on the course make it more enjoyable. They could be old friends that I’ve played with many times or someone who I’ve just met. Even more so is the 19th hole where you get together (maybe with a larger crowd to re-hash the round, pay off bets, and tell stories of great and notso-great shots. It is where 10-foot puts turn into 20 footers and 220-yard drives become 260. One reason groups with multiple foursomes go back to start on holes 17 and 18 is so more people finish around the same time and can then spend time at the 19th hole. Beyond the 19th hole, there are special golfing events held by the 18-hole and 9-hole women’s groups and by the men’s group where golfers are getting together in good numbers to socialize. Beyond that, there are special social events that the club holds. For me, it is another chance to hang out with your fellow golfers and their significant others as well as with tennis and social members. Over the last two months, the Social Committee has held two very nice events – one a “Rat Pack” event with Sinatra-style singing and the other a Kentucky Derby party which included mint juleps. They were very nice events, but unfortunately not well attended by golfing members. I would hope going forward that the golfing members will give these events a try. I’m pretty sure you’ll be glad you did!

Men’s Golf

By Nigel Jones It was great to see the Early Birds getting into the spirit, in early May, by celebrating “Cinco de Mayo”. Players dressed in Mexican flag colors and wearing fedoras enjoyed a cerveza or two as well as the golf. Steve Riley was unable to play, but that didn’t stop him from joining in while undergoing treatment in Charleston. Well done Steve - we all continue to pull for you!!

The second Major in the Champions Cup was completed at the end of April. Congratulations to Lanny Bailey who won the Individual Match Play Championship, and to the flight winners – Dave Donnelly, Dave Renbarger, and Jerry Bailey.

Individual Match Play winners

Super Men’s Day in May saw a record equaling 44 members turn out for a challenging format of “MoneyBall”. The winners were the team of Lanny Bailey, Todd Bruner, and Wes Warren. This was Lanny’s first Super Men’s Day victory in more than 50 tries!!

The Super Seniors Stroke Play Championship had 9 members sign up, including defending Champion - Art Tonkinson. Results will be published in June. The Men’s Golf Committee again reviewed successes and improvements from the Individual Match Play Championship. It was noted that most of the matches in the final round were played on the same day, and the Committee agreed that this should be maintained. In summary, the following will be applied to all future Match Play Super Men’s Day Winners Championships: DAYS OF PLAY - For Rounds 1 & 2, matches must be completed by the end of day on the scheduled dates. For the Final Round (which determines 1st through 4th places), matches must be played only on the designated date for that round, with no exceptions. Upcoming Events - Look out for the Invitations for these events and sign up. Super Men’s Day - Wednesday 15 June Nightmare Nine - Friday July 1 Super Men’s Day - Wednesday July 6

Fun Around The Club By Anne Gerth

This is a reminder to all our members that we have great social activities every month here at our club. During the summer, we have three events each month beginning with our Monthly Member Social held the first Thursday of the month, and followed by the Net, Nine and Dine on the second Thursday of each month. Come play a sport and then join us for dinner. This is an opportunity to try a sport you don’t usually play. You can sign up for nine holes of golf, tennis or pickle ball, all for $25 per person including dinner. The sign-up sheet is posted in the pro-shop. Don’t miss our monthly themed social event. Coming up is DJ TRIVIA on June 20 featuring burgers and grilled chicken sandwiches. Not to be missed is Caribbean Dreams on July 22 with live steel drum music. In August we have two events, both guaranteed to get you out of the summer heat…the always popular BOGO dinner on August 22 where dinner will be accompanied by some lovely classical guitar music. New to our club is Wine and Design on August 26, a daytime wreath crafting event which includes a light lunch, a glass of wine, materials and instruction for making a beautiful fall wreath for your home. I urge you to take advantage of our special events to enjoy your fellow club members and have some fun. If you are not joining in, you are missing out on many of the great benefits of being a member of Port Royal Golf and Racquet Club.

Ladies Golf

By Tammie Blank Welcome back to “summer” …. And a wave goodbye to a few of our more Northern oriented members. We will welcome you back in October and November. The PRPC’s “Grounds Committee” now has two lady members. Ladies often see the courses from a different perspective than the men players. The ladies will accept and consolidate your comments for the “Grounds Committee” to review, and then make appropriate recommendations to our Heritage Golf management. Please send your factual comments to either Monique Lyons (Monique@thrustsc.com) or Liz Bailey (bbts321@gmail.com). The Committee needs to know about specific issues: boundary markers, course turf erosion, cart path damage, etc. The grounds committee works very hard to improve our courses, including having working days where our men have done tremendous repair work. Rules & Relief: the PRLGA 18-hole association has adopted both a “Root Rule” and a “Pine Straw” rule. When playing in any group feel free to adopt those rules for a less frustrating, and “acceptable” round. An official statement of rules will be sent to you upon request. LGC.PRPC@gmail.com Monday “Ladies Open Play” day has been permitted to continue - but a robust participation by our ladies is necessary to maintain those tee-time segments. A weekly query about your intention to play is sent by email from Liz Bailey. Please RSVP to her and come join the group for a no-stress round of golf, 9 or 18 holes, walk or ride. Etiquette: Keep or move rakes out of the way of play. Fill divots. Be proud to come back with empty sand bottles. These are OUR courses - we need to expend a little energy and thought to maintaining them. Heritage Invitational Tournament: A “Ladies Division” is being planned - but needs Lady players to participate. Please contact me directly, or Bill Hazel, to indicate your intention to play. A minimum number of Ladies is needed to create a Division. It’s FUN and a good bargain. 2021’s format is available for your review. Dates: September 22, 23, & 24, 2022.

18 Holers

By Carol Duffin The Club and the Lady 18's were ablaze in red, white, and blue for their Member/Guest held on May 2 & 3. I can't come up with enough superlatives to describe the cocktail party, the golf, the luncheon, and the awards ceremonies. I am going to let the pictures do the talking this month. Sophie Burger and her committee of Carole Howell, Mary Zych, Cathy Grigoriou, Gay Halleman. and Carol Duffin did an outstanding job once again. I would be remis not to mention our special guest, Vasilios Burgernapolis, who opened our games at the beach house with the lighting of the torch.

9 Holers

By Judi Chmielowiec ATTITUDE! Playing golf should revolve around a good attitude. Positive attitudes produce better golf, camaraderie, and incentive to play golf for many years. So, I would like to thank Barbara Costalas for giving us the example of consistently hitting the ball down the middle of the fairway, practicing and showing up every week in her sporty outfits. Cheers to you, Barbara, and thank you for giving us the incentive!! Congratulations on the marriage of our Nine Holer, Julie De Laurence, to Ed Logue. What a beautiful couple! We are all so happy for you!

We ended our month of April with a lot of Chip-Ins: April 21: Barbara Fratercangelo, Barony No. 9, Ellen Johnston, Barony No. 5 and Jo Ann Gibbs, Barony No. 8. April 28: First Time Chipper, Sue Walker. Winners for our Shamble of the Month: 1st Place Team: Joan Hazel, Barbara Scotti, Barbara Costalas and Jackie Darling - 69. 2nd Place Teams and Tie: Nancy Simpson, Kathy Jacobson, Ellen Johnston and Cathy Vetrano, Kathy McGown and Cherie Bailey - 71. 3rd Place Team: Sue Walker, George Voehringer, Barbara Fratarcangelo and Judi Chmielowiec - 74. Honorable Mention Team: Nene Shope, Jo Ann Gibbs and Karen Simpson, with a very close score of 75. Thanks again to Jackie Darling for managing the month of April. We welcome our May Director of the Month, Kathy Jacobson! We started our first game of May with our Low Net Tournament. Our Tournament Director, Joan Hazel, reminded us that the winner will be revealed at our December Awards Luncheon. Congratulations to Mary Ann Shallcross for her Chip-In on May 5th on Barony #8! Our second week winners for the Individual Stroke Play were: First Place, with a Net Score of 35, Joan Hazel. Second place, with a net score of 36, Cherie Bailey. Third Place, with a three-way tie of net 39, were Sue Walker, Nancy Simpson and Jo Ann Gibbs. AND, Congratulations to Leslie North, for a Chip-In for a BIRDIE on Robber’s Row No. 1. Congratulations to all of our Nine Holers with their great team spirit and great play!

As we continue into the Summer months, we traditionally lose some of our Nine Holers to their part-time residence, with full commitment to return. Travel is beginning to be part of our lives again. We have a lot of family joining us for visits at our beach location. Injuries and illnesses may happen. But ultimately, our Nine Hole Ladies Golf has been a steadfast group for over 30 years, and we look forward to always having new ladies join our group and keeping the group together as a mainstay of the Port Royal Golf Club. See you on the course!! Tees up!

Racquets Up!

By Jan Schuppert May 5 – Cinco de Mayo- proved to be a grand afternoon for our racquet members to gather for tennis and pickleball play on our beautiful courts followed by refreshments courtside. Thank you, Dale Brown, for organizing this event in which nearly thirty members participated in round-robin social competition. Our Latin theme determined our choices of refreshments – chips and salsa complemented by margaritas and Coronas provided by Robber’s Row Grille and subsidized by the racquet activity funds. Thanks to all who participated!

Tipsy Tennis From surveying our racquet membership at the recent pot-luck dinner party, we found that there is great interest for Friday, late afternoon/evening “tipsy tennis and pickleball.” We plan to start in June and will determine continuation based on member interest and participation. Watch for additional information through email and posted at the Sports Shop. Lessons and Drills Improve your game! We are fortunate to have opportunities provided by our pros: Dale’s daily “Shot of the Day” and “Fast-Action Drills.” Individual and small group lessons lead by Coaches/Pros Dale, Royce, and George. Take advantage when you can!

Employee Spotlight: Jean Maldonado I joined Heritage Golf in January 2012 and just celebrated my 10th year at the company. I am the Tournament Sales Director for the Hilton Head Island Clubs. I moved to Hilton Head Island with my family when I was 10 years old. After attending College of Charleston and getting married, I decided to come back to the low country to raise my own family. My husband Chris and I have 2 children – Matt who is attending Coastal Carolina University and daughter Ella who will be attending Vanderbilt in the fall. In my free time, I enjoy boating and spending time at the beach with my family and friends.
