EDITOR’S NOTE 8

MARCH & APRIL 2022

In recent years we have been able to savour a veritable smörgåsbord of home décor and lifestyle trends. In 2015 it was Denmark’s “hygge”, essentially meaning the creation of a warm and cosy ambience. Two years later we moved on to the Swedish “lagom”, which encouraged us to maintain a healthy and harmonious lifestyle while embracing personal enjoyment and individual contentment. Then we travelled to Scotland in 2018, to feel snug, sheltered and warm with “còsagach”; and more recently it was Norway’s turn, with that country’s “koselig” philosophy stressing the importance of creating a happy home environment that is comfortable, pleasant and stressfree, and provides internal peace. Bearing in mind what was to hit us all with such emotional and physical intensity in March 2020, anyone first adopting and then maintaining these prescient trends over the past two years would have been better placed to cope with the traumas and upheaval of COVID. Today, sadly, the pandemic is still with us – even if its effects seem to be gradually diminishing – so in 2022 it remains vitally important to be attuned to concepts that help us preserve the mellifluous sanctity of that most crucial lifestyle space of all – our home. Which is where “homefulness” comes in. In the context of home décor, design and style, “homefulness” actually dates pre-COVID to 2019, when it was highlighted by Revista AD. At the time, the magazine noted that no other word described the wonderful sensation of returning home after a long trip – or simply at the end of a day at work or elsewhere. Clearly, that sensation has been accentuated in recent times, and this year industry gurus and experts around the world are incorporating “homefulness” into their design lexicon and creative plans. And we all can as well, simply by ensuring that our home is a healthy haven for relaxation and sharing precious moments with family and friends. “Homefulness” will no doubt also be a prevailing theme at this year’s main international home decoration exhibitions, which have juggled their schedules to accommodate “presential” presentations and meeting points. Maison & Objet in Paris is now scheduled to be held from 24 to 28 March (after being postponed from January) and Milan’s Salone del Mobile (its 60th edition) is planned for 7-12 June, but IMM Cologne is held over until 16-21 January 2023. One less-heralded event, Intergift, went ahead last month (February) in Madrid, and Home & Lifestyle Magazine was there to observe a bustling (and reassuring) hub of activity covering premium-quality textile and wallcoverings, wallpaper, upholstery, rugs and carpets. A second edition of this gift and decoration showcase, considered the sector’s leading fair in Spain and Portugal, is due to be held from 14 to 18 September. Around the same time (22-28 September) we will also be present at Design Week Marbella, a one-week festival of architecture and interior design. Meanwhile, our initial focus will be on Maison & Objet, where the theme is “New Luxury: From Uber Luxury to Lux Popularis”. According to the organisers, “Unbridled desire and unbounded imagination is the direction in which the brazenly buoyant luxury sector is heading, exploring new paths that draw on haute-couture artisan craftsmanship and high technology on the one hand, and pop culture and the values of inclusivity on the other.” In addition to serving as inspiration for the Paris exhibition’s upcoming edition, this new phenomenon also provides us – back here on the Costa del Sol – with some uplifting ideas to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to the “homefulness” of our cherished personal spaces. LIVING ROOMS ...

PUTTING A LITTLE LOVE INTO THE LIVING ROOM As we are entering into the spring months, freshening up the living room with a few tweaks can give this much visited area of the home a new lease of life. If your living room is strapped for space, avoid using too many bold colours and patterns. Maintaining a soothing tone throughout will create a spacious feel and be easier on the eye. Choosing a circular coffee table over a rectangular model will provide more space to walk around it, and side tables with drawers or shelves built-in below are an easy solution to keep the room organised and clutter-free. For larger living rooms, textiles are a great way to make a room feel instantly cosy, so add a rug, cushions, a throw and some dramatic curtains and the effect can be truly transformational. For a room that feels cold and lacks personality, consider a feature wall, a statement armchair or a large piece of artwork to inject character into the space, as well as adding your own artistic expression. In terms of trends, block-like modular seating has become an increasingly popular offering, not only offering versatility by allowing you to have different seating arrangements, but also lower and more casual lounging – making the concept of “comfort” the real focus. Seating with high backs and armrests can appear quite formal, and therefore in recent times it has featured less within new contemporary collections.

Opposite Page The new version of the Camaleonda modular sofa from B&B Italia possesses all the classic elements from its past but it has also been redesigned to add even more comfort and sustainability – using recycled or recyclable materials (www.bebitalia.com).

FABRICS FOR UPHOLSTERY As fabrics for upholstery are usually used for high-traffic areas such as armchairs, sofas, cushions and poufs, they need to be highly durable. When choosing your fabric, consider who will be using it and where it will be placed. If the fabric is going to be exposed to a lot of sunlight, choose one that will not fade easily. If there are children or pets in the home, a stain-resistant material might be a better option. Here are some ideas…

THE WALLS HAVE IT ALL Far from having to be boring, walls can often be revamped quite easily with a simple lick of paint. Go for a good-quality paint and it will not only save you time applying it but also last for years. Wallpapers have come a long way, with exciting textures and designs, and there are even wallcoverings durable enough to be applied onto exterior walls. Tiles may seem costly to start-off with but their hardwearing qualities make them an attractive costeffective solution in the long term. So, brighten up your walls this spring and see for yourself how transformative it can be.

FABULOUS FLOORS Floor tiles are great for high-traffic areas or rooms that endure humid conditions, such as a bathroom or kitchen. An excellent way to create a sense of space is to use the same tiles as the floor all the way up the walls. FABRICS FOR CURTAINS When choosing curtains for a room, you need to consider the type of fabric most suitable for the job in hand. For example, if you want a curtain to give you privacy but still allow air to flow into the room, then cotton or linen would be an obvious choice. However, if you want to block out light and add drama to a room, velvet or a heavy polyester would be a good option. Linen has become especially popular these days, as it is very practical. It is washable and can withstand a certain amount of wear and tear – ideal if the room is often visited by children or pets. If the space is small, avoid busy patterns and hang your curtain as high as possible to make the room feel taller than it is – creating a sense of space. Here are some excellent ideas for spring…

INTERIOR DESIGN THAT’S FOR EVERYONE ALISON BETHELL-COLLINS INTERIOR DESIGN

Alison Bethell-Collins has lived on the Costa del Sol for many years and has become a well-known and respected face within the interior design world. Her wealth of experience and, more importantly, her continued passion and love for her work in providing special homes for her clients has led to many becoming good friends. As a result, she is often asked to accompany clients on buying trips to the likes of Paris, Morocco and Italy, as she has the invaluable “little black book” of supplier contacts that makes furnishing a home, wherever that may be, a much easier and more pleasurable process. Alison has now opened a showroom in the heart of San Pedro de Alcántara, where she has music playing, coffee on the go, and chocolates and biscuits a plenty. The showroom 54

mainly houses Italian designer furniture and a huge array of fabric samples from major international brands, but she also has a veritable library of catalogues to show clients if a particular product is not in stock. She comments, “Even though most interior designers are very friendly and approachable, I realise that sometimes high-end interior design showrooms can seem a little daunting to enter, so I like to keep the ambience relaxed and fun so that customers feel at ease and enjoy the whole experience. “Even if you are just wanting some curtains or blinds or a small reform in your home, I’m more than happy to help out. OUTDOOR LIVING ...

GETTING READY FOR THE SUMMER… Turn your outdoor space into a stylish and relaxing zone where you will want to enjoy the great outdoors with family and friends this summer. This is the key time to organise your outdoor area in time for the warmer spring and summer months. Good shade solutions will offer respite from intense sunshine, allowing you to continue enjoying the outdoors in comfort. Outdoor furniture that has good weather-resistant properties will last longer, making your investment go further, so consider aluminium or stainless-steel framed furniture and fabrics that can hold-up to harsh weather conditions. Merging your design standards and style from the indoors to your outdoor space will give a seamless and continuous aesthetic. Here are some ideas…

THE IMPORTANCE OF SHADE To be able to enjoy your outdoor living space to the maximum, it is important to have a shaded area that provides some timeout from the sun when the heat becomes all too much. Investing in a good shade solution gives you the opportunity to continue enjoying your natural surroundings for longer. These days shade solutions are not just practical but are often also quite decorative. Take a look at these ideas…

BLISSFUL BATHROOMS The bathroom has come a long way and is nowadays a place where people like to spend time relaxing and enjoying rather than just “using”. Today we have rain showers, jacuzzi baths, sculptural washbasins, and toilets that have more technology than we can wrap our heads around. Designing your bathroom can seem like quite a daunting task, but considering what requirements suit you is a good place to start. For example, if you find it difficult to get in and out of a bath, perhaps a wet room is a better option, offering easy entry access on a flat non-slip surface. If the area is small, consider rimless shower screens, large-scale tiles from floor to ceiling, a uniform colour (or a combination of neutral colours) and clever storage systems to give the room a sense of space and organisation. A quick and easy way to make a bathroom feel more homely is to add natural features such as a wooden stool or bath mat, wicker baskets for storing bath towels, and lush green botanicals. It is not difficult to give your bathroom some personality and make it an area where you can truly rejuvenate and enjoy the surroundings.

DINING IN ...

DINING AT HOME Everyone takes pleasure in bringing loved ones together and enjoying a meal around a dinner table. After all, it is what unites the household and friends whilst, of course, savouring gastronomic delights cooked-up by the home cook(s) appointed for the occasion. As this area of the home is so socially important, it needs to be well-invested, not only to impress guests but also for long-lasting timeless beauty. Natural wood is currently very popular – and, actually, it always has been. A worn-in dining table takes its knocks and also writes a beautiful story in time, making it practically an heirloom with all the memories it holds. To veer onto a polar opposite design style, a stone table provides an extra-special and luxurious dining experience. Not everyone can necessarily afford it, as it is invariably much more expensive, but it is stunningly iconic and sometimes even a sculptural work of art within the overall home design.

KITCHEN

SOPHISTICATION There is a lot to consider when updating a kitchen – from materials, storage and appliances to layout. Optimum functionality is key but, if you also choose a design that you will not easily become tired of, your investment will go further. Islands have become especially popular in recent times, offering not only added workspace but also a bar area for casual dining or drinks – very useful if you don’t have a dining room. Well thought-out cabinetry is a gamechanger, keeping the space orderly and clutter-free, and don’t scrimp on the quality of your materials as a sound investment in this area will pay-off in the long term. Do your research and consult an expert to determine the best solution for your particular needs.

A U N I Q U E CO N T E M P O R A RY H O M E OFFERING SOUL AND SERENITY SENSES... THE ACOOLA CONCEPT VILLA

Acoola Living, the forward-thinking interior design and outdoor living company, has just launched its new Acoola Concept Villa Senses in the prestigious area of Marbesa, east of Marbella. The idea behind the launch is to offer renovation clients an inspirational tour around this newly-built property so that they can experience the Acoola Living spirit in a real home setting. Great attention to detail was taken with respect to the build and design, which is why Acoola decided to show others what is possible when you implement the same design language across the board, turning a brick house into a cosy home. According to Cathelijne de Vilder, Dutch Acoola Partner and Head of Interior Design, “When the beachside property in Marbesa was bought some years ago, the house offered very little in terms of views, and the style of the build was old-school Andalucian. Then it was decided to carry out a huge project working closely with a well-known architect and a high-quality builder to realise our vision. “For planning purposes we wanted to maintain the exact plot orientation and instead build upwards so that the property could benefit from the feeling of space and air, and in doing so the property would gain open sea views as a result. The new build took 15 months to complete. Of course, no project this size goes without some bumps in the road, but thanks to the professionalism of everyone involved it was quite a problem-free exercise and we are so happy with the outcome.” 120

MARCH & APRIL 2022

Steering away from the “square box” white minimalist style seen typically with other new-builds in Marbella, the design of this house is more toned down. Though the property blends perfectly into its surroundings, it is unique in its innovation and design acumen, which allows the home to enjoy the sea views that it was previously starved of – offering a sense of peace and tranquillity for those living inside and looking out. Though the plot size is not particularly large, when you enter the home you are struck by the height of the ceilings, and because of this there is such a great sense of space. “As we didn’t want to extend the property outwards,” says Cathelijne, “adding a few centimetres onto the height of the ceiling was a very important factor in making the house feel airy and free. As we are surrounded by other buildings and trees, by building upwards it also allowed us to enjoy the sea and mountain views beyond. “Traditionally, living rooms are situated on the ground floor but we decided to design the home so that the living room was upstairs and the main living space offered the spectacular views that make this home extra special. This truly contributes to Acoola’s Inside Out Living mantra.” Also, great attention was given to privacy by providing each bedroom with its own terrace or hideaway corner, contributing to the overall “boutique hotel” feeling of the villa. Unlike the sparkling white walls of many contemporary properties, seamless micro-cement in a soothing oatmeal tone is applied throughout the home, and all corners are smoothed round for a gentle warm feel. Oversized win-

dows connect the inside with the outside without any aesthetic interruption, making the most of the natural sunlight and beauty that surrounds the property. When it came to the interior design, natural earthy tones throughout the house were added to continue the organic theme that Acoola wanted to achieve with the construction. Tactile fabrics, natural materials and homely touches were all carefully selected to create a cosy and inviting ambience. As Cathelijne notes, “The design has been very much inspired by our travelling experiences. We love design that takes cues from nature. For this home we wanted to only use organic colour palettes and materials for a harmonious and peaceful feeling – hence the name “Senses”. Even though the property has been newly built, we wanted the house to feel warm and cosy – this was very important to us – so we meticulously thought through every detail to make sure we achieved this feeling as soon as you enter the home. Adding a contemporary wood fireplace as an eye-catcher in the living room was a must to feel, hear and smell burning wood during cold winter evenings.” At the same time, the house comes with many innovative features. Several lights, thermal alarm cameras, (underfloor) heating/cooling and solar panels are App-controlled, and there are access keypads on various levels, so no keys are necessary. As the property sprawls over four levels, a small lift has been installed to facilitate the transport of groceries, laundry and wood logs, for example, between the floors, even up to the remarkable rooftop terrace

with a whirlpool. Clever hidden storage solutions ensure that the home can easily stay organised and clutter-free – all contributing to the overall sense of serenity and tranquillity. · Four double bedrooms with ensuite bathroom + two guest toilets · 367 m2 built · 40 m2 pool + rooftop jacuzzi · 200 m2 terraces on three levels · 622 m2 corner plot · Walking distance to beach · Price on application

TOP OF THE TABLE Tableware sets the mood and complements the food you are serving. Whether you want a formal setting or a more relaxed feel, tableware creates this instantly. For everyday use, consider durable crockery which will stand the test of time. Unless you are aiming for a very formal table setting, tableware doesn’t have to be “matchymatchy”, so mixing up colours and serving bowls, for example, is a playful measure to make the table look interesting. Candles and vases are an easy and effective way to ensure the table setting feels welcoming and provides a finished look. Serving jugs, pots and bowls are much more attractive to place on a table than simply jars and bottles, and they also make the table-setting appear more well-considered. So make your mealtimes special and invest in some beautiful tableware this spring. LIGHTING ...

THE EXCITING WORLD OF LIGHTING To get lighting right in the home, it not only needs to create the appropriate mood for the room but it also should be at the correct level to serve its intended purpose. Perhaps the room needs various types of illumination such as direct light for reading, a wall sconce to highlight a painting, and some soft table lighting to create a warm ambience when relaxing. Often lighting can be taken for granted, but it is important both physiologically and psychologically so it can be quite transformational. The world of lighting is an exciting one, with seemingly boundless technological advancements and new design ideas constantly coming onto the market. Lamps do not have to be just functional tools but can also serve as decorative and sometimes even sculptural pieces. With so many options to choose from, do your research before buying and you will literally be able to change the look and feel of your home at the flick of a switch.

F LO O R L I G H T I N G Opposite Page The Filomena floor lamp designed by Matteo Ugolini for Karman originates from the floor and can be stretched up walls and across ceilings for a dynamic and minimalist look. The architectural style of the Filomena came from Ugolini’s observation that “rooms are blank slates, cables are pencil marks, and cones highlight the colours and objects that surround us”. Karman is available through Siesta Interior Design in C. Plaza in Nueva Andalucía (www.siestainteriordesign.com). Right Luceplan’s Malamata (named after the designer’s Israeli roots, drawing on the Hebrew meaning of “up and down”) is characterised by a counterweight that allows the diffuser, made from blown opal glass, to be placed in various positions. THE SLEEP RETREAT Your bedroom is where you recharge your batteries so you can take on the world the next day. It is, therefore, safe to say that this area is not only a hugely important part of your home, but also a crucial aspect of your life during the daytime hours to ensure you get it right. Bed linen that allows your skin to breathe and make you feel as relaxed as possible before you fall asleep – as well as whilst you sleep – is instrumental to a good night’s rest. Plus, having a good-quality bed that supports your body in every necessary way is a game-changer. Natural fabrics, colours and materials have become increasingly popular, and for good reason. They add a relaxing, homely, organic feel, which is what we all want when we retreat to our safe place – our bed.

WARMING UP YOUR HOME WITH A RUG You can easily warm up your living spaces with a rug, not only by having textile beneath your feet but also aesthetically. Whether it is for a runner down your hallway, a centrepiece in your living room or under your bed, rugs are versatile and add a welcoming feel to any room. Also, outdoor rugs are a great way to bring the indoors outside, thus transforming a terrace or patio into a more finished lounge area. Generally, the more you invest, the longer you can enjoy your rug because – after all – it usually has to withstand plenty of footfall. Rugs are not just for the winter as they are a fabulous way to make a space more inviting, so here are some ideas for the spring…

NEW LIFE HOME

S H OWC AS I N G T H E E SS E N CE O F G LO B A L D E S I G N Interview with Jorge Francia Cuadrado

Tell us a bit about the background to New Life Home and its origins… At New Life Home we come from a family that has been dedicated to the sale and design of exclusive furniture for stores throughout Spain for more than 20 years. But our real birth actually dates to two years ago, thanks to changing trends in the area of decoration and interior design. We have immersed ourselves in a constant evolutionary wave with the objective of offering clients the most avant-garde and exclusive products in accordance with current market demand. The New Life Home concept derives from that change. We were not only looking to import furniture but we also wanted to develop our own style, given that 90 per cent of our products are designed exclusively. Our inspiration when acquiring furniture has always come from travelling, from being familiar with different cultures, from representing the history and crafts of the world. That’s where our “Made In World” originates, and its goal is to expand that beautiful part of the East to Europe. New Life Home expresses a new personal and professional period for us, following on from this transformation and inspiration, and above all from our enthusiasm to seek an evolving and well-established new era. Our growth has been remarkable. We are making a significant investment in staying abreast of the public’s preferences, and especially in image, always 168

with the intention of maintaining our commitment to bringing natural aspects of the world to the West. All the products in your showroom have an organic aesthetic. Why do you think this style is so popular in southern Spain? Our style aims to be in sync as a kind of representation of the Mediterranean climate. The furniture has a marked natural character accompanied by a handcrafted touch that we bring from the East, making it the ideal combination for a wide variety of spaces. Our furniture has personality, and it fits in perfectly with our seasonal climate, not only in southern Spain but also in the entire Mediterranean area. We offer a natural style, with an ethnic and modern essence – hence the public’s appreciation and interest. You have an extremely comprehensive showroom and website where a wide variety of products can be purchased conveniently. Apart from the store, what other services do you offer? Since our beginnings, in addition to the sale of exclusive furniture, one of our essential services – an important one that the company takes great pride in – has been carrying out interior design projects. The key consists in advising and creating unique and outstanding spaces that respond to each client’s

requirements and desires. Once we secure a project, and after carrying out all the necessary adjustments, we execute the project and turn the ideas into reality. Within our specialisations, we design spaces that range from the modification of homes, focusing on those spaces where we are particularly specialised, to a service for professionals in the field of hotels and restaurants. We develop each space made-to-measure, with special care always given to adapting to a client’s multiple requirements. We also produce customised furniture. In tune with our philosophy, and always listening intently to a customer’s requests, we create the products that best suit their needs, always following aesthetic criteria and constantly being open to their advice. You sell both indoor and outdoor furniture. What interesting new products do you have in your store for us to decorate our homes this summer? Our intention is to present a large number of new collections that will be on public view through March and April. We are working to ensure that our showroom, website and social networks are kept up to date with the new products we offer. The products that have been most popular are teak wood collections and rattan decorations. From tables of various designs, sideboards and chairs to decorative baskets, lighting and cushions made of

natural materials – and all of these products have become available after an exhaustive search for suppliers and manufacturers in the East. Currently, our furniture comes from Indonesia, Vietnam, Morocco, China and India, and we have personally visited these countries on multiple occasions to acquire products that are manufactured there to our designs. In conclusion… At New Life Home we are always happy to listen to customers, to adapt to new trends and, above all, to create unique spaces. And always following our philosophy of bringing the essence of the world into people’s homes. New Life Home Avda Velázquez 204-206, Málaga Tel. (+34) 951 576 384 www.newlifehome.es

Clemente Vergara is a Barcelona-based photographer who specialises in areas of architecture and travel that are his long-standing passions. He studied environmental engineering and currently works as project manager in a major international company for waste and water management. However, he has always been inspired by geometry and the work of famous architects such as Ricardo Bofill, Luis Barragán and Richard England – all of which encouraged him to pick up a camera. A relative newcomer to the world of photography, Vergara has quickly developed a keen eye and unique style portraying a story through his photos that focuses on shapes, light and shadow, colours and tones.

Vergara says he considers his work to be instinctive and sensorial, interpreting the world in the best way he knows how – through his photography. He places great importance on minimalism in his photography, believing that raw beauty comes mainly from simplicity. He also enjoys finding a composition that offers harmony and aesthetic beauty, and it gives him great satisfaction to communicate that concept to other people, drawing on their emotions and visually inspiring them. clementevb@gmail.com www.clementevb.com Instagram: @clementevb

COA MARBELLA A N I NS P I R I N G N E W D I N I N G E X P E R I E N CE I N N U E VA A N DA LU CÍ A

Now opened in Nueva Andalucía, gastronomic hotspot COA has already gained an impressive following that ranges diversely in age and nationality. Man-about-town Dutch owner and brand ambassador Michael Keijzer, who formerly owned the renowned Dreamers nightclub, takes a very hands-on approach to his work, getting up to greet each customer who walks through the door – with warmth and sincerity. He says he is greatly humbled by how quickly the restaurant has attained such popularity. COA (a name taken from the last three letters of the Spanish word for barbecue “barbacoa”) offers many dishes cooked on a charcoal grill, but they are quick to stress that they are not a steakhouse but rather offer contemporary Mediterranean gastronomy cooked with authenticity and high-quality produce. We met chef David Aguado – a young and enthusiastic fellow with an evident passion for his work and an impressive CV to boot – who has put together a well-considered and balanced menu that offers something for everyone. As you would expect from the restaurant’s name, there is a large “A La Brasa” (grilled) selection of aged meats with the likes of Galician, Angus, tomahawk, rib eye, cowboy Simmental, Wagyu and Halal on offer, but there are also wonderful seafood and fish dishes (the tuna Almadraba Tataki is a popular choice), stews, pizza and vegetarian options available. The chef explained that the menu will change slightly throughout the year to stay in tune with seasonal produce, while always maintaining the same high standard of presentation and appreciation for the ingredients used. All the dishes we tried looked like works-of-art and, once you’ve taken your pic for the “Gram”(!) and dive in, you realise how much emphasis has been put into the taste experience. Everything we tried was packed with flavour and, when we asked the beautifully turned-out waiters for more details about the dishes, they were happy to accommodate – showing great knowledge and enthusiasm for what they do. 174

MARCH & APRIL 2022

The restaurant spans two floors and there is a fabulous terrace for al fresco dining. During the day the terrace is a suntrap, and when we visited there were several tables taken by customers having lunch in the sun whilst others were simply savouring a coffee and homemade dessert – and enjoying the ambience. Inside, the decoration is eclectic but well thought-out. There is an urban chic vibe, with lounge music playing that gives a buzzy feel but is certainly not overbearing. Other superb features include an impressive bar area and comfy velvet bucket chairs, and tables adorned with fresh white tablecloths and good-quality tableware. Blooms of freshly-cut flowers appear all around the restaurant, as well as bold contemporary art by local gallery JoGis Art. As you wander up the staircase, which is a design statement in itself, there is another charming dining area with a huge (and very well-stocked) glass wine cabinet that lines the whole of one side of the restaurant, and on the other side there is a private area leading off the main dining room, ideal for small parties. COA offers more than just an inspiring journey for the tastebuds: it also delivers on giving the customer an all-encompassing dining experience. This venue provides sophisticated décor, ambience and service, steering away from stuffiness and instead making you feel like you have just joined a club of people who are lovers of good food, drinks and a fun atmosphere.

COA Marbella Avenida Las Malvas, Nueva Andalucía (Marbella) Kitchen open all day from Monday to Saturday, 1pm to 11pm Tel. (+34) 683 528 324 www.coarestaurant.es.

A HIDDEN TREASURE FROM ITALY BY CASSIE M @WINEPOSTER

176

MARCH & APRIL 2022

Those of you who already know me from the wine business will be well aware that I am all about great food and classy wines. Like Franciacorta, for example, the hidden gem of premium sparkling wines. I know what some of you may be thinking: “Is this the Italian Champagne?” To call this style a Champagne would be as insulting as cutting pasta with a knife in front of an Italian Nonna (aka an Italian grandmother). They consider pasta to be part of their religion, so that’s a big no-no. But… are there any similarities? Let’s find out. In one word, Franciacorta describes an area, a production method, but also the name of the wine. The area is located in the foothills of the Italian Alps. You will find this treasure of wine areas in Lombardy in northern Italy, between Milan and Lake Garda. If you haven’t visited this part of Italy yet, you have my personal recommendation. Why? You can enjoy shopping, art and historical landmarks during the daytime (as an example, do not miss the beautiful Duomo – the Milan cathedral that is the second biggest in the world), and you can still make it to any of the small, picturesque villages on Lake Garda in the evening to savour a glass of sparkling under the stars with your loved one. All in one day! Any wine-loving tourist will of course visit Franciacorta on the way, for a winery tour and tasting. One of the wineries I recommend is Bellavista. Here they make world-class sparkling wines from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, in 200 hectares of vineyards divided into hundreds of plots, which all have different soils and conditions. They produce one unique wine from each plot! This is an excellent opportunity for winemakers to achieve a selected mix of wines every year and blend them together to attain perfection. There is breathtaking nature with the Alps in the background, and the vineyards have amazing first-class views of Lake Iseo and the entire Po Valley. Different styles of Franciacorta have different ageing preferences, but what they have in common with Champagne is the second fermentation in the bottle (traditional method) to build up CO2 that dissolves into the wine to make those precious bubbles we all adore. Champagne produces approximately 300 million bottles per year and Franciacorta around 17.6 million. Of all wines produced, only about 20 per cent are exported to other countries – which makes the Italian choice more exclusive in many ways.

We also cannot overlook the fact that the whole production area is under the highest quality and strictest forms of appellation laws in Italy – the DOCG Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita – which you will notice on every bottle as a certified seal. Flavour profiles can often vary from fresh citrus, crushed green apples and stone fruits like peach and apricot blossoms to freshly baked brioche and soft yeasty tones. Fresh acidity, and the best of all – the bubbles. They tend to be of the finest kind, resulting in a pleasant, thick and fluffy mousse on top. Franciacorta can be enjoyed without food as a celebratory drink for any occasion. With food I would suggest ripe cheeses, chicken with a creamy sauce, seafood (including of course oysters) and a creamy risotto, just to mention a few classics. As you will now have realised, there are many differences and similarities between Champagne and Franciacorta. And the best way to find out more is to try them yourself in a tasting. If you are interested to know more about the fast-trending Franciacorta, or book any other wine tasting, do not hesitate to contact me. Cheers! Vinoteca Barolo Urb. The ROV (Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle) is powered by the first Lexus hydrogen engine designed to combine the fun of off-road driving with, according to the car company, “a commitment to ensure exhilarating driving can co-exist with a carbon-free society centred on responsible mobility”. One of the design team’s main objectives was “to develop a vehicle that would look good in all kinds of natural environments”. To that end, they used Lexus’ “human centred” philosophy to create the kind of vehicle people would expect from a luxury carmaker but without losing the rugged performance of an ROV and the key hallmarks of an off-road vehicle – with its exposed suspension, protective cage and chunky off-road tyres for driving along muddy tracks. They designed a body that could protect passengers, incorporate the Lexus signature grille and preserve enough travel for the front suspension, while the front fenders were also conceived to offer protection against any stray rocks and mud. Connected to the rear hydrogen fuel tank, the suspension cover protects functional parts as well as conveying a sense of durability inherited from Lexus SUVs. The dark bronze paint has been carefully crafted, and the “L”-motif front and rear lights and the rear LEXUS badge are incorporated “to express the latest Lexus design language”. The ROV is equipped with a simple meter, based on the Tazuna concept, that instantly reads information the driver needs while being able to focus on their driving. 178

MARCH & APRIL 2022

Luxury details include a leather steering wheel and a sculpted shift knob, as well as seats that feature suspension elements aimed at smoothing bumps out of the ride and which are upholstered in hard-wearing synthetic leather. The first Lexus hydrogen ICE meets all the carmaker’s stringent requirements for QDR (Quietness, Durability, Reliability). “This ROV concept embodies the exciting sound of an ICE and the responsive rise in torque that comes from the fast combustion speed of hydrogen, which Lexus believes is highly compatible with the ROV. This hydrogen-powered ROV concept is the result of Lexus’ desire to preserve true off-road pleasure in tomorrow’s low carbon society.” The 1.0-litre hydrogen engine is said to work just like a petrol engine, but with a high-pressure tank for compressed hydrogen which is delivered precisely by a direct hydrogen injector. “Importantly, Lexus’ new hydrogen engine produces close to zero emissions, with a negligible amount of engine oil burned during driving.” A lightweight body composed of a strong pipe frame and suspension enables the driver to enjoy the car’s natural movements, the distinctive “Lexus Driving Signature”, and dynamic and comfortable off-road capability. As Spiros Fotinos, head of Lexus Europe, notes, “The Lexus ROV is our response to the growing passion for the outdoors and adventurous spirit of luxury consumers. As a concept, it fuses our desire to also develop lifestyle-oriented products with our ongoing research into new technologies that contribute to carbon neutrality. As well as delivering a concept that is thrilling to drive, it has near zero emissions thanks to its hydrogen powered engine.”

ANIMAL PROTECTION ORGANISATION ADANA SET TO RECEIVE FULL RENOVATION FUNDED BY CHARITY Article supplied by Atlas Group

ADANA, the Association for the Rights of Abandoned Animals, was established in 1990 and has, to date, found forever homes for more than 9,000 dogs. Situated in Parque Los Pedregales in Estepona, the organisation is run by volunteers and its centre relies on donations to provide for the care and attention for abandoned animals. ADANA rescues over 400 dogs a year, helping to rehome animals that are recovering from sickness or injuries, and it also provides a safe haven for abandoned pregnant dogs so that their puppies can be born safely at the shelter. Now, ADANA is set to receive a long-awaited improvement, a major renovation to the shelter which will be delivered by leading Costa del Sol construction company Atlas Group. These works are required to bring the animal shelter up to the modern levels required for their application of a new zoological licence, which means that ADANA will become the official animal shelter in Estepona, with plans to incorporate the Manilva and Casares areas as well. 180

MARCH & APRIL 2022

The project includes a new sewage system with a biodegradable storage process unit to protect the surrounding environment, a new roof to cover nine of the patio areas for the dogs, a new fire alarm and escape installation, and an upgrade to the solar electrical generation system. Plus, finally, the addition of a new standby generator to cover future expansion of the shelter. The total cost of the project stands at €188,000, and ADANA is continuing its efforts to gain funds to cover the works. ADANA enlisted the services of architect Juan Salvador Martin Galan and specialist engineer Francisco Sanchez Navarro to create the complete project, which has been approved by Estepona Town Hall and is under the guidance of ADANA president Susan Brown. Entrusted to complete the building works, Atlas Group has long been a supporter of ADANA, and for years has sponsored a kennel at the shelter. “We are making history with the renovation,” said Susan Brown, “and it has been a project 30 years in the making. All the works have been totally fund-

ed by the friends and volunteers of ADANA; we do not receive any financial assistance from national or local governments, surviving on public donations alone. These donations allow us to continue our efforts to save the abandoned dogs and ensure that they are rehomed successfully in the local area. “We wish to thank all of those who have helped us with our mission so far and helped us to make this happen. We could not have done this without you. We continue to seek donations to help us reach the target of the renovation project and to help us continue to look after the dogs in our care.” Mike Gregory, Director General of Atlas Group, said, “We are thrilled to be working alongside ADANA to provide the long-awaited renovations to the shelter. Atlas Group first sponsored a kennel back in 2014, when I adopted my dog Max, and since then we have continued to support this worthy cause. The entire team at ADANA do a fantastic job and we congratulate them on their dedication and hard work.”

HAYES GIN

Gin is definitely having a gin-aissance, and everyone wants to enjoy this juniper spirit. With so many to choose from, it’s quite a minefield to know which gin to go for when visiting a bar or restaurant. Gin is one of the most low calorie drinks to order in a bar, thanks to its juniper berries, as it is low in sugar and loaded with antioxidants, and also reduces bloating and will apparently stave off the wrinkles (it’s a win-win situation!). Hayes is a premium craft Spanish gin that is distilled in Madrid and is now distributed on the Costa del Sol – with all ingredients 100 per cent natural. Their recipes are created to give bold flavours that are encapsulated in the gin itself, meaning it is unnecessary to add flavour by means of a mixer. As a result, all that is needed is the full Hayes experience and a refreshing tonic with ice. As gin has become a popular favourite – with a growing number of people 182

Their admirable and tenacious marketing strategy has earned them three prizes at the World Gin Awards. Hayes is already being enjoyed in the sun at beach bars and Marbella pool party venues, as well as in the many upstanding restaurants and bars across the Coast. W H Y W E N E E D TO D O M O R E ST R E N GT H T R A I N I N G BY RACHEL GARROD

When I was younger the gym didn’t really float my boat. I was active, as most healthy younger people are, but lifting weights was far from my preferred method of exercise. That was probably okay then, but unfortunately agerelated sarcopenia (involuntary loss of muscle mass) is something we can all experience, even if we remain active with walking. After the age of 30 (so young!) we lose around three to eight per cent of our muscle mass over a decade. More recent research suggests that, after the age of 35, unless we intentionally do resistance exercise, we can lose around five per cent of muscle mass per year. Simply walking or cycling is not enough to help prevent this age-related loss (unless we do a lot of it and include hills). This matters because strong muscles are essential for balance, to help prevent bone loss and to help keep the weight off. When muscles are strong they use oxygen more efficiently, putting less strain on your heart and your lungs. This improvement in efficiency goes some way to minimising the impact of ageing on our lungs. As muscles work they pull and tug on our bones, stimulating an increase in bone formation. Weight-bearing exercises with high impact like walking or jumping are also good for our bones, but strength training plays an often under-rated beneficial effect. Strong muscles (particularly the leg muscles) are also associated with improved balance and coordination, and many studies have shown reductions in the number of falls with strength training routines. Strength training also has anti-inflammatory

effects on the body, as working muscles release chemicals that effectively fight inflammation in our bodies. Strength training (also known as resistance training) doesn´t have to be in the gym, or even with weights. Pilates is considered a strength training activity, as are certain types of yoga and many calisthenic routines. These types of exercise all use the person’s own body weight as resistance. Think of a simple squat exercise where the leg muscles are lifting the weight of the body. One of the best all-round exercises requires no equipment other than a regular dining chair. From a sitting position, and without using your arms to help, stand up straight and tall and repeat as many times as you can. Whilst walking is a great form of aerobic exercise, adding in hills or even bursts of faster walking will help build strength. Understandably, as we age our exercise routine needs to be appropriate, particularly if there are comorbidities such as heart problems or joint pain. And that is where a physiotherapist can make the difference, so please get in touch if you would like help building strength. W H O A R E YO U CA L L I N G O L D? MEDICAL MINUTES BY JOHN SCHIESZER

The number of people who are living past the age of 100 has been on the rise for decades, up to nearly half a million people worldwide. The oldest living person, Jeanne Calment of France, was 122 when she died in 1997. Currently, the world’s oldest person reportedly is 118-year-old Kane Tanaka of Japan. Such extreme longevity, according to American researchers at the University of Washington, likely will continue to rise slowly by the end of this century, and now estimates show that a lifespan of 125 years, or even 130, is possible. Longevity has ramifications for government and economic policies, as well as individuals’ own health care and lifestyle decisions. The researchers, who published their findings in the journal Demographic Research, used statistical modelling to examine the extremes of human life. With ongoing research into ageing, the prospects of future medical and scientific discoveries and the relatively small number of people to have verifiably reached age 110 or older, experts have debated the possible limits to what is referred to as the maximum reported age at death. While some scientists argue that disease and basic cell deterioration lead to a natural limit on human lifespan, others maintain there is no cap, as evidenced by record-breaking supercentenarians (age 110 or older). Researchers estimated a near 100 per cent probability that the current record of maximum reported age at death (Calment’s 122 years, 164 days) will be broken. The probability remains strong of a person living longer, to 124 years old (99 per cent probability) and even to 127 years old (68 per cent probability). While many of us know our health affects longevity and quality of life, we struggle to do even the small things that will help us live younger longer, according to Dr. Stephen Kopecky, who is a preventive cardiologist at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He has written a book entitled “Live Younger Longer: 6 Steps to Prevent Heart Disease, Cancer, Alzheimer’s and More”, and he said there will always be risk factors we can’t change, such as genetics, sex, age or a global pandemic. “But we can control others, such as what we put in our bodies and how much exercise and sleep we get. Prevention should be the cornerstone of medicine because it helps to prepare for the unexpected. COVID-19 highlighted why we need to be more proactive,” said Dr. Kopecky. Walking Toward a Better Tomorrow Exercise has been shown to give the immune system a boost by maximising the body’s ability to take in and efficiently use oxygen, among other things. 184

MARCH & APRIL 2022

“Moderate exercise, where you can talk but not sing while exercising, is enough to increase the activity of virus-killing cells both in the short-term and long-term,” Dr. Kopecky said. ”Even 20 minutes daily can help quell inflammation and boost immunity, and exercise can be divided up during the day. Calming activities and supportive relationships minimise stress, reduce cortisol production and enhance the immune system’s function. “Concern about the health of our loved ones, our jobs, children’s schooling and other stressors will cause an increased production of the hormone cortisol in the body, which in turn can suppress the immune system,” said Dr. Kopecky. Practising mindfulness and stepping away from what’s causing anxiety can help a person stay grounded. Exercises that have calming or meditative qualities, such as yoga, also are beneficial, said Dr. Kopecky. For those who don’t have much time, try practising gratitude by being thankful for three things when going to sleep at night or waking up in the morning. Dr. Kopecky said this habit has been shown to lower stress levels and reduce diseases due to stress. Sleep Matters Adequate sleep boosts the number of immune cells circulating in the body and improves infection outcomes. The interaction between the immune system and sleep is a two-way street. “When your immune system response kicks in, it changes your sleep,” said Dr. Kopecky. “You may find yourself sleeping longer, for example, as your immune system stages an attack against a virus. When you’re not sleeping well, you may notice that you get sick more easily. Getting adequate sleep can help support the way your immune system functions by increasing the number of immune cells circulating in your body.” Studies in humans on the relationship between sleep and infection link shorter sleep duration with increased risk of pneumonia and respiratory infections. The amount of sleep the immune system needs to function properly is individual. Dr. Kopecky suggests cultivating the habit of putting down the cellphone at least a couple of hours before bedtime. The blue light suppresses melatonin, which helps people get a good night’s sleep. John Schieszer is an award-winning national journalist and radio and podcast broadcaster of The Medical Minute. MARCH & APRIL 2022

The schedule of exhibitions at Málaga Picasso Museum leading up to summer is highlighted by an overview of links between Pablo Picasso and great masters of the past. The museum is also showing a retrospective of artist Paula Rego and a showcase of Parisian photographs by Brassaï.

Face to Face: Picasso and the Old Masters Beginning in February and due to run until 26 June, “Face to Face: Picasso and the Old Masters” presents paintings from the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla’s collection of Spanish and other European masters in addition to nine major works by Picasso belonging to the Fundación Almine y Bernard Picasso para el Arte (FABA). According to the Málaga museum, “By juxtaposing works by Picasso with those of the old masters, the exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover the links between Picasso’s work and those by El Greco, Francisco Pacheco, Giovanni Battista Caracciolo, Francisco de Zurbarán, Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbretchs, Bernardo Lorente Germán and Diego Bejarano. “These pairings not only enable viewers to make specific comparisons between the work of Picasso and the masters in order to understand how deeply Picasso’s art was rooted in Spanish traditions. The juxtapositions also allow us to discern how he transformed these traditions into the revolutionary art of the 20th century.” The museum notes that Picasso was a keen student with a profound interest in art of the past. “His work was deeply rooted in Spanish culture, particularly in the baroque period. The achievements of these Spanish masters provided Picasso with models and techniques that drove him both to emulate and transform tradition. In this complex response, Picasso explored how the masters themselves had responded to the classical tradition by embracing styles that the purists had excluded from the classical canon of Italy and France.” The Paris of Brassaï: Photographs of the City Picasso Loved Inaugurated last year and continuing until 3 April, “The Paris of Brassaï: Photographs of the City Picasso Loved” shows the work of one of the most

renowned European photographers of the first half of the 20th century, who arrived in Paris from Hungary in 1924. Brassaï is recognised as helping to create the universal public image of Paris, the Eternal City, and this is displayed in the exhibition alongside works by Pablo Picasso, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Lucien Clergue, Fernand Léger, Dora Maar and Henri Michaux, as well as with period piece films, posters, sheet music and documentary material. “Brassaï’s photographs invite the viewer to wander through Paris, with its river Seine, Notre Dame, its brothels and its markets. He conjured up a superb depiction of society in his many shots of the intellectual, literary and artistic scene of 1930s and 1940s Paris, ranging from Sartre to Beckett.” Paula Rego Retrospective From 26 April until 21 August, the museum will be presenting an exhibition by Portuguese-British visual artist Paula Rego who “redefined figurative art and revolutionised the way in which women are represented”. The exhibition tells the story of her life, highlighting the personal nature and socio-political context of her work, and revealing her broad range of references, from comic strips to history paintings. It features more than 80 works including collage, paintings, large-scale pastels, drawings and etchings, spanning her early work from the 1960s to her richly layered, staged scenes from the 2000s. “Rego passionately and fiercely opposed the Portuguese dictatorship, using a range of sources for inspiration including advertisements, caricatures and news stories. She also explored folk tales as representations of human psyche and behaviour… Throughout her career, Rego has been fascinated with storytelling and this imbues much of her work.” www.museopicassomalaga.org HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES 2022

CO N V E YA N C I N G S E R V I C E S I N S PA I N ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY WELEX LAWYERS & ACCOUNTANTS

The conveyancing process in Spain begins when your offer on a house is accepted and finishes when you receive the keys, and it covers all the legal stages when buying property in Spain. Stage 1 This stage of the conveyancing process comprises searching for a Spanish home, for which you will need a copy of the Nota Simple. The Nota Simple describes what you are buying, and the charges and encumbrances that the property is accountable for. The annual IBI (council tax) and the level of community charges, where applicable, should be identified so you can recognise ongoing expenses. Thereafter, it is recommended to appoint a Spanish lawyer who can ensure that fundamental legal procedures have been met.

194

The conveyancing process in Spain provides the possibility of writing into a purchase contract certain “get out” clauses. However if one of the clauses eventually needs to be acted upon, the buyer may have to take legal action. In addition, the purchase contract also describes what expenses and fixtures form part of the sale of the property. Stage 4 The fourth stage of the conveyancing process comprises the completion of a property purchase, and it is undertaken in the offices of a public notary. All parties connected to the completion in Spain must be in attendance. The aforementioned parties may include any bank personnel for redemption of a current loan or new mortgage, the seller and the buyer, and their corresponding legal representatives.

Stage 2 The next stage includes signing a reservation contract and paying a reservation fee. A reservation contract will ensure the Spanish property is removed from active marketing. However, prior to signing a reservation contract and paying any money, it is advisable for you to have taken counsel from a legal representative.

Stage 5 The final stage entails a copy of the deeds being given to the buyer or their legal representative. The originals are delivered to the Land Registry to be examined and recorded. After the registration process, which can take up to three months, has been completed, the original deeds and all invoices relating to the transaction will become obtainable.

Stage 3 This part of the process describes private purchase contracts. It is standard procedure at this point for a 10 per cent deposit to be transferred to the seller. When the contract is signed, the buyer becomes legally accountable to fulfil payment of the property, and the seller is now legally obligated to sell the property at the agreed price.
