If you enjoyed the sneak peek of Hannah Miley and Euan Duff’s wedding plans in the last GWD, you’re going to love this feature because they’ve only gone and tied the knot! Beautiful bride and Olympic swimmer Hannah shares their lovely love story, from the expertly arranged Edinburgh Zoo proposal to their dreamy summer nuptials at the stunning Schivas Steading…

“We met at a university sporting event in 2012 but it was quite ironic – Euan was the one swimming and I wasn’t! He won and I was asked to present his award. But we didn’t see one another much afterwards as he’d just graduated, and I was prepping for the Olympics. After summer, though, he asked if I’d like to go out for dinner and the rest is history.

Euan proposed in 2017 and did an incredible job surprising me. He took me to Edinburgh Zoo for a belated birthday treat and I got to be the zookeeper for the day, meeting and feeding all the animals. The last one was the panda and, being in on the surprise, the zoo had cleared the whole area. I was still none the wiser until Euan got down on one knee with just the panda as our audience!

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk COVER STORY ♥ 5

We had a long engagement as we wanted to buy our first house together first and use our leftover savings for our wedding budget. And at the start of 2022, we were finally able to dedicate time and effort to wedding planning. We did all of it by ourselves. I set up an Excel spreadsheet to try and stay on top of numbers, budget, and timings for things. It was tricky at times (and we possibly should have taken on a wedding planner) but it was really satisfying knowing we did it ourselves.

We instantly fell in love with everything about Schivas Steading and, after securing our dream summer date, set about planning. Our vision was based around the pretty eucalyptus plant, and we used lots of sage green and blush pink with splashes of navy. There was a subtle sporting hint in the décor because that’s what brought us together, but we didn’t want it to take over theme-wise.

Having lived in leggings and tracksuits most of my life I wasn’t sure what would suit me when it came to dress shopping. But I knew

I wanted to show off my broad shoulders and back – I’m quite proud of them! Kathy at Midnight Elegance picked out a simple yet elegant halterneck dress that I’d have overlooked on the hanger, but I put it on and instantly knew it was the one for me. It hugged all the right areas on my body, showcased my shoulders and gave me the confidence I was looking for. In the beginning, I felt I needed a wow-worthy dress to feel like a bride but in reality, I was the one who made it wow-worthy.

I found a lovely pair of shoes from Ruby Shoo with a blue sole - so there was my something blue! My mum gave me the headband she wore at her wedding, which I had turned into a hair vine that I then wore alongside her cathedral length veil. They did an incredible job and I loved reusing items from mum’s special day.

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Meanwhile, Euan stuck with tradition and used the tartan that went with his mum’s maiden name. He paired it with a navy tweed jacket and snuck on a set of swim trunks underneath for a bit of fun! Poppy, our cocker spaniel pup, did ring bearer duties and sported a ‘Dog of Honour’ bandana made by a friend, teamed with some extra flowers from my bouquet.

The rest of the ceremony was just as personal as our choice of ring bearer and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Of course, Poppy was the star of the show and, helped by our friend Jen, carried the basket with the rings in it… Then decided to roll in my veil, giving everyone a good laugh!

Afterwards, there were drinks and sweets, and our ‘adventure table’ showing photos of us from the past ten years and some sentimental items. We’d invited everyone to both the ceremony and reception but kept the meal strictly family. So, our friends grabbed a taxi and popped off to freshen up

and eat before coming back for the evening entertainment, which was by far the best part of the day – apart from saying ‘I do’! The band were amazing, and I felt so happy seeing family and friends who have never done a ceilidh before getting up again and again to dance!" ♥

Getting Started

Planning for the Purse Strings

Weddings are notoriously seen as being terribly expensive and, as the cost of living rises, the thought of spending big on your big day could, quite frankly, be terrifying! But it needn’t be that way – steal some of our tips below…

the later you get married, the less you’ll spend on food, drink, décor… Or the better quality you can afford when you do spend!

www.jonathanaddie.com

For every couple, there are big ticket items you’re just not going to compromise on – and that’s great! It may be the dream venue, the right photographer (trust us, you’ll be glad you invested in this one!) or, if you’re doing it for the ‘gram, the wow-factor décor.

Whatever your priorities are, make sure you can achieve them by going easy when it comes to other aspects of the wedding that won’t make quite so much impact for you two as a couple. And remember, everyone’s different – go your own way!

The guest list

Pre-pandemic guest lists were an average of 102 but have since shrunk to just 72, with some couples shunning an audience altogether and going for an elopement. Trimming even five or ten guests could make a big difference overall…

Timing

Twilight weddings (we’re talking near-darkness nuptials, not the TV series!) are increasingly popular and make for the most magical celebrations in autumn and winter. Plus,

On the timing note, a midweek wedding is much more popular these days. It’s usually a cheaper option and, you’re likely to be able to get married sooner. Saturday wedding waiting lists can be long!

Save on stamps

As big fans of our talented northeast stationers, we’d never be ones to shun their services. But could you send their beautiful designs digitally, instead of paying for print and postage?

Do the legal bit then throw a party

If you’re not lusting after a specific ceremony type, how about going with the costeffective registry office option and inviting only witnesses? That way, pennies can be saved for a right old kneesup to celebrate you two being married!

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
8 ♥ PLANNING

Be clever with florals

Support local with your flower choices and you’ll be rewarded not just with outstanding service, but with honest pricing for seasonal blooms. When it comes to added extras, like buttonholes and corsages, bear in mind that they can be made from anything so ask your expert what’ll be cost-effective.

DIY décor

Whist we’d never suggest you constructing your own sparkly dancefloor or fairy light canopy, creating your own centrepieces and other bits ‘n’ bobs could certainly cut costs. How about saving up bottles or jam jars and adding candles or dried flowers? And could friends and Fam' save up petals from their garden for instantly biodegradable confetti?

Go easy on the bridal party

If you’ve got a big entourage, ask the girls to wear their fave fancy outfit and the boys to choose from their own kilt or suit. You could then treat them on a smaller scale with a gift of jewellery for the gals and a hip flask for the boys.

Have a dessert table

If you want to splurge on a wedding breakfast to remember, could you go big on the starter and main (there are almost always clean plates with these courses!) then mix up dessert by asking guests to bring something to the table? We feel a GBBO-style competition coming on…!

Skip something!

Whether it’s wedding favours, toast drinks or something else, if there’s any part of the traditional wedding day that you’re not 100% feeling, let it go in. That way, you can stick to your budget while keeping hold of the stuff you really want to include. ♥

The Ultimate Celebration – Combined!

Hens and Stags

The last hurrah as unmarried people... You know we’re talking about the hennies and staggers! Commonly referred to as your last night of ‘freedom’, the hen and stag originated in Ancient Greece, but the events radically evolved in the 19th century.

Now, though, the tradition has developed even further… Enter the sten do! The thought may never have crossed your mind but online searches for the term, which refers to the couple celebrating together, increased 9900% last year!

This new and (in some peoples’ opinions!) improved version of a hen and stag do has proved popular for couples who share the same friendship group or have similar interests.

Not only that – same-sex couples have also found this a better option. Traditionally, your last night of freedom is gender-dominated but a sten is inclusive, and we’re here for it! And, with that in mind, the term is also being adopted by couples who are celebrating separately but have a mix of genders included in their party.

Looking for another reason to go with a joined-up celebration? Budget! Separate celebrations can be costly, especially if you opt for a party abroad, but a combined get together with your faves is a great way to save pennies. Your sten is also a great way to introduce both bridal parties before the wedding if they haven’t already met… The ultimate pre-wedding celebration!

10 ♥ HENS AND STAGS
www.byrhea.co.uk

Next up: How and where to make it happen! With a bigger guest list you may think finding the right style of celebration will be tricky, but rest assured there are so many options, from those on our doorstep in the northeast to further afield.

If you love soaking up the rays, take the party abroad for a weekend of water sports and sunbathing. Or what about a city break in the UK? From Edinburgh to London, enjoy an unforgettable trip full of laughter and fun. Closer to home, you can never go wrong with an old-fashioned night on the town! Cocktailmaking anyone? And if you’re a competitive bunch? Go for something activity-based, like Lochter in Oldmeldrum or head to an escape room… Drinks are on the losing team!

From helping couples break away from gender stereotypes and allowing you to party with all your favourite people, we’re totally on board with the sten do… Are you? ♥

Fabulous florals

Flower-based designs have taken root and we’re not complaining! Bold and bright florals are back on the scene, whether that be in the form of intricate embroidery or as a colourful print. If you’re quite fond of maximalism, this could be the perfect style for you. Pair it with simple accessories to let the dress speak for itself and we guarantee that you’ll be the talk of the town in this style.

Short and sweet

These dresses may lack length, but they make up for it with personality! Just Google Kourtney Kardashian who sported a corset-style satin mini dress from Dolce and Gabbana, complete with fashionable lace detailing, for her marriage to Travis Barker in Italy earlier this year. The higher hemline allows you to go for more extravagant details and accessories – what about funky shoes or a gorgeous veil like Kourtney donned when she said: “I do”? Her cathedral-length number showcased a beautifully embroidered depiction of the Virgin Mary – a homage to Travis’ religious upbringing, and a symbol of alliance, respect and common devotion.

If this is ticking your boxes, we have an FYI for you… Designer Grace Loves Lace has replicated this stunning design to help upcoming brides get a similar look for a fraction of the cost! At more than three metres long, the tulle veil is the first of its kind for the brand and features embroidered block lettering that reads ‘TRULY MADLY DEEPLY’ above the hemline. A statement piece indeed!

P.S. If you have a long dress in mind for your ceremony but don’t feel comfortable wearing it for your reception, could you keep a shorter option on hand to make dancing the night away much easier?

Cinderella moment

We’ve all seen the gorgeous blush-toned wedding gowns over the last few years but it seems to be time for a change… Out with the old and in with the blue!

From periwinkle to cornflower, every shade of blue is welcome in this trend. Not only do you get to live out your Disney fantasy and feel like a princess but this is also a perfect nod to the age-old tradition of having something blue on your big day.

Tailored to perfection

If a gown isn’t your go-to, why not try out a stylish pantsuit or shake things up even more with a jumpsuit? Whether it’s a perfectly straight neckline or an angled suit you’re after then tailoring is the answer, and lucky for you it seems to be all the rage recently.

Elevate your look even further by combining them with nostalgic but re-emerging trends, like shoulder pads and high-neck shirts or blouses with ruffles. They’re usually a more comfortable choice and great for getting your boogie on during the reception!

If lines and sharp angles aren’t your thing but you still want that tailored edge, consider softening these looks with bows, tulle trains, embroidery or pearl beading. Or go in completely the opposite direction – be a little extra with your wardrobe and add a cape to shift the focus! This old wedding trend has soared to the top again as a modern take on the traditional veil, and we can certainly see why. This striking look has us in awe!

The bigger the better…

With maximalism becoming increasingly popular it’s no surprise that ball gowns are once more taking centre stage. For fans of the classic full skirt, this vibe works beautifully alongside the ‘something blue’ trend… Can you imagine recreating the iconic Cinderella gown and wearing it to your castle-based ceremony? We’re swooning just thinking about it!

For a more fun ‘over the top’ bridal look, give this trend a whirl with the addition of puff sleeves, trailing trains and oversized applique details… Just lush!

Royal regalia

As news of Bridgerton’s third and fourth seasons is confirmed (woohoo!), Regencycore remains a firm favourite in the bridal world. Empire waists, bishop sleeves and elbow-length gloves are going to be staples for this look for 2023 weddings and beyond. Plus, you can expect to see organza come back into the picture, and maybe even some new lace patterns too.

Love the idea but not sure if you want to go all-out Bridgerton? Don’t fret. It’s such a versatile style that you could combine it with other on-point looks. How about blending it with cottagecore vibes or bohemian styles – just add detachable puff sleeves or subtle accessories, like headbands and gloves.

Sultry style

If you want to show a bit of skin on your big day, say hello to a backless number. Be prepared to wow your guests as your exit becomes just as exciting as your entrance! Cut-outs are also a great option. There are so many to choose from – go classic with keyhole or fun-filled with some geometric side panels.

Another option for adding a bit more spice to your look is the high slit. It’s great for elongating your frame and you can add bags of sex appeal by going for the femme fetale slit in a form-fitting dress – or make it mysteriously alluring by pairing it with a light and airy floral gown.

Neither of them doing it for you? Then we’ve got two words for you… Sheer gown. Or at least the illusion of one! Plenty of mesh fabric and crochet lace detailing in all the right places is sure to grab your guests’ attention. This boho-esque design has found its way into many aesthetics, including cottagecore (think frills and sheer chiffon layers) and dark academia (imagine a white or deep, autumnal-coloured dress covered in embroidered lace patterns) making it a versatile addition to any dress.

Gilded glamour

Inspired by the MET Gala theme, gilded glamour was popular in 2022 and it looks set to continue to be in 2023. This trend includes dresses adorned with sequins, crystals, pearls and other beaded details sure to make you shine on your big day.

wedding? They can pair it with a denim or leather jacket for a fun, festival-style vibe.

Separates

Choosing separates is a fun way to customise looks – mix and match skirts, necklines and sleeves… So many options! Plus, you’ll score top sustainability points as multiple pieces offer even more wearability post-wedding.

Lovely linen

Go green with a natural fabric like linen. Just make sure to pack a steamer for your wedding morning to avoid the crinkled look!

Whimsical Bridgerton vibes

Make sure everyone’s feeling the love with soft and subtle shades (barely-there nudes, pale greys and dreamy sages) made oh-so-romantic with elaborate details… We’re thinking ruffles, tiers and floral embroidery. ♥

Metallics

Reminding us of disco fever in the 1970s, metallics are back but not just in silver. Expect to see black, gold and pink in all types of dresses, from funky minis and slinky maxis to gorgeous occasionwear separates. Best dressed guest alert…!

Cut-outs

If you’re happy to bear a little flesh, the cut-out craze isn’t going anywhere soon – and it’s about to get big in the wedding world. Naturally, this trend lends itself to summer celebrations but if you’re going for it in spring or autumn, simply add a stylish coat or jacket for warmth (and extra glam points!)

Texture galore

From fringing and tassels to voluminous tulle, these timeless details will add interest to any wedding guest outfit –and it seems like bigger is 100% better!

Talking of which, shoulder pads will be upping their game for 2023. Showy and powerful, an oversized shoulder will ensure a narrower looking waist and it can be a clever way to balance wide hips. What’s not to like?

Puff sleeves

Already on the hot list, sleeve detail is here to stay. Whether you go for puffed, gathered, lantern-cut or balloon, you’re going to give off a fun yet elegant look all day long.

Kimonos

Oozing elegance, kimonos are set to become a 2023 wardrobe staple for every occasion, including attending weddings! Go plain or printed (geometric is set to be popular) and rest assured you’ll wear it time and time again post-wedding.

Feathers

2023 is predicted to be the year of feathers when it comes to occasionwear and, as if that trend weren’t bold enough by itself, some of you will be combining it with lace, mesh and sequins for a real wow-factor. We can just imagine the hats and fascinators now… Swoon!

Pink and red

No longer the fashion faux pas it once was, be prepared to see these colours combined at weddings for the foreseeable. If mixing them in a dress feels too much, play around with accessories – a striking red dress paired with stylish pink heels, perhaps?

Satin

Simple but oh-so-effective, we’re so in love with slip dresses for ‘maids and delighted that this style is working for guests, too. Look out for long-sleeved satin gowns, and satin suit jackets paired with a skirt or trousers.

The mini

Who says you need to go floor length? A short frock can be dressed up or down with the right accessories. Plus there’s so much potential for wearing it again after the event. Top tip: Go for a classic colour to get even more use out of it! ♥

Groomswear All about the Kilt…

40 ♥ GROOMSWEAR

Whether you’re one groom or two (just how dashing are our feature couple Chris and Stuart, by the way? Check out their attire on page 54), a groom’s wedding day ensemble is probably the most important outfit he’ll ever wear. From a kilt to a suit (and everything else in between – trews, anyone?), do you want to stick with Scottish tradition or switch to a modern suited and booted approach?

www.deesidephoto.co.uk
Georgian
Georgian

www.aboynephotographics.com

Going traditional

One of the first things that spring to mind when thinking about a northeast wedding is an influx of men in kilts… In fact, have you ever been to a wedding north of the border and not seen a man in a kilt!?

Although some people think the kilt (which dates back to the 16th century) is part of our daily attire in Scotland, it’s actually not often that an occasion arises where you can dust off your kilt bag and spend time piecing together the components of the legendary outfit.

So, when it does there’s an immediate sense of pride for our Scottish heritage. And with all eyes on you on the big day, it’s important that your kilt looks just as good as you do…

This means spending a little time thinking about what you want, then pulling it all together. But fear not, check out our handy guide and follow it up by booking in to see a trusty northeast supplier…

Step 1

Do you want to buy or rent? Yes, investing in a kilt can be a big expense but bear in mind that it’ll not just last you years (perfect if you have lots of friends’ weddings coming up after yours!) but it’ll be a lifelong memory of your wonderful wedding day. Go made-tomeasure and you’ll find the kilt is tailored to your exact physique – perfect for such a special occasion.

Step 2

Next up, decide whether or not you want to wear the same tartan as your groom squad on the special day. Having all the gents matching is a good way of identifying the bridal party, and your pics will look so streamlined. But it’s totally normal to want to stand out as the groom(s) with more of a statement piece. Alternatively, meet in the middle – go for the same tartan all-round and opt for a stand-out sporran for the main man/men to really set them apart.

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk 44 ♥ GROOMSWEAR
www.mccalls.co.uk 46 ♥ GROOMSWEAR

Step 3

Let’s pick a tartan! If you’re feeling family-orientated, check if your surname is associated with a clan tartan, such as MacDonald or MacKay. If not, there could be a district tartan connected to your ancestors Otherwise, it’s down to preference. Choose your favourite colour or pattern, or tie your choice in with something in your wedding theme.

Step 4

Once you’ve picked your tartan it’s time to choose the other components, including your jacket, which is pretty important as it can help to determine the formality of the day. You’ll find the iconic Prince Charlie jacket is the most formal, and it’s traditionally paired with a waistcoat and bowtie. The Argyll, on the other hand, is your less formal alternative. Teamed with a waistcoat and regular tie, it’s perfect for an all-day affair. Often less-discussed is the Braemar jacket. Cut slightly shorter to make sure the kilt is fully visible, it’s considered to be the Highlandwear equivalent of a suit jacket.

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk
www.byrhea.co.uk

Step 5

Arguably the most important part of completing the ‘fit is the accessories… And brace yourself because this is likely the most you’ll ever wear!

You’ll need a kilt pin, belt and buckle, sporran, socks, flashes, shoes and more – but don’t get lost in all the terminology. Simply pop along to one of the northeast’s trusted groomswear suppliers and they’ll have you sorted in no time at all.

One more tip...

With thousands of cancelled weddings over the last few years, the industry has recently seen a massive boom in demand for kilts so, now more than ever, take heed of the advice not to leave your outfit planning ‘til the last minute. Whether you’re buying or hiring, suppliers are doing their best to meet needs – but you can help them by being that little bit more organised! ♥

Classic yet opulent with lots of gold, baroque and greenery, plus handmade wedding rings, scented dinner candles and a six-tier wedding cake… We’re completely in love with Stuart Williamson and Christopher Malcolm’s magical wedding vision, pulled together with the help of some very special suppliers. Chris tells us more about their whimsical, regal, Sleeping Beauty-style day…

“After getting engaged (with the help of our dog Patsy), our priority was finding a venue big enough and fabulous enough to host all our family and friends. They’re so important to us and we wanted to make sure that noone would be left out of the celebrations.

We fell in love with Thainstone House Hotel, its country house manor style and wonderfully regal décor as soon as we arrived. The colours in the rooms we wanted to use matched our wedding theme perfectly and we liked the idea of being married in one part of the hotel, moving outside for the drinks’ reception and having the rest of our day in the beautiful ballroom.

Given we have a dressing room at home that’s bursting at the seams with clothes and shoes, it’s no surprise that we were both very excited to get our outfits! We’re very fortunate that we share similar taste in pretty much everything, so we discussed at length what we wanted and found we shared the same vision. Luckily, as soon as we walked into Kilts Wi Hae, there it was on a mannequin… Meant to be!

REAL WEDDING ♥ 55

We spent a lot of time picking the perfect accessories and chose very different sporrans. Stuart went for copper stag details and used my Vivienne Westwood watch as his something borrowed because it toned in perfectly. I went for silver stag accessories, and my mum bought me a beautiful blue and silver brooch –my something new and blue. Our florist attached my late grandparents’ engagement and wedding rings to my flowers so they were close to my heart all day.

Our gorgeous bridesmaids wore Vera Wang and given they’re all different shapes and sizes, we were happy for them to have varied styles in the same colour. As it happened, though, they found a dress they all loved and that was it… In and out of the boutique in less than an hour!

On the big day, having everyone together made our hearts so full. We were married by my dad’s cousin, Alisanne Ennis, a newly ordained celebrant who is simply made for her job. She handmade us a quaich for the ceremony, complete with engraving and handles in the shape of paws to represent our four beloved dogs.

Afterwards, our guests joined us on the terrace and lawn where we enjoyed drinks, canapes (including plenty of sausage rolls for the kids!) and a playlist we’d prepared together. The meal that followed was absolutely beautiful – the food was piping hot on arrival and the service was seamless. Our guests picked from a menu prior to the wedding, and Jennifer at You Are Invited printed their choices on their place cards to jog their memories. We intentionally sat people together who hadn’t met before and it worked a treat. Post-wedding, so many of them have already connected and planned to meet up.

My bridesmaid, Kate, and Stuart’s bridesmaid, Kerri-Lee, did speeches, and I spoke too. Then we surprised everyone after the meal with singing waiters. We often find there’s a lull at this time during a wedding so wanted to give everyone an energy boost and really set the tone for the party to come!

Stuart wasn’t keen on a first dance, so we mixed things up. We asked our band, The Big Show, to choose a song and we opened up the evening

celebrations by dancing with our wedding party. To say the band were phenomenal would be an understatement – the dancefloor was always full, they set off confetti cannons and even invited our friend, Sarah, on stage to belt out a song with them as it was her birthday.

The whole day was just magical, filled with love, happiness and a desperate need to party. We were beaming throughout, to the point people asked if our faces were sore from smiling!

If we could offer any advice to other couples, we’d say to keep it simple and classy, stick with your vision and use local suppliers. Our dream team gave us the most stunning event, all created from our vision, and we wouldn’t change a thing.” ♥

Jewellery Ringing in the New Year

Jewellers and couples alike have outdone themselves this past year. They have kept us guessing with truly unique designs and amazed us by reinventing traditional styles and blending the old with the new. So, we’ve been on the hunt for the statement-making wedding ring trends you’re going to love in 2023. Here are some of our favourites…

Today’s couples are striving to break old traditions and create new ones when it comes to weddings. You’re constantly thinking outside of the box, whether it's about your wedding attire, the event accessories, or the day itself – you’re always setting new standards within the industry! Jewellery has often been quite consistent in its trends, so it is lovely to see that ’engagement ring trends 2023’ is one of the most searched phrases on Google as both couples and jewellers pave the way for new and exciting jewellery options.

Every couple needs rings that they can proudly say are an expression not only of their love but of themselves as well. Engagement rings and wedding bands are a symbol of love, promise, and commitment – picking out the perfect one is a serious task!

Especially as this could be a piece of jewellery that the bride(s) or groom(s) may wear for decades to come and eventually pass on to the next generation. Hopefully, these trends help you find inspiration for your own rings!

Vintage moment

Vintage detailing and old-school cuts are resurfacing, and it's no surprise that this style pairs beautifully with some of the more nostalgic bridal trends set to be big this coming year. The perfect option for those with a deep love of historic fashion!

Old Milne and old European cuts are rare to come by but they make for the perfect statement piece. Modern alternatives to this are the cushion and round cuts – pair these with milgrain settings. Often described as ‘tiny dots’ along the edges of a piece of jewellery, milgrain is a design technique in which small beads of metal are used to create borders, and these styles capture that antique feel just as well as their timely counterparts.

Grooms are opting for the classic plain gold or silver metal bands that many saw their fathers wearing as they grew up. It’s a timeless option and a touching gesture to those who raised them.

Modern stacks

Interlinking bridal sets of two or stacks of three (common for those who may already have a promise ring, or for couples who wish to do a vow renewal in the future) are popular amongst more modern couples. They showcase a variety of styles perfectly whilst remaining classy and elegant. Micro paving is a popular setting for this style, as the bands on either side draw attention to the gemstone in the centre ring.

www.mccallsjewellers.co.uk

Will you stick with the simplistic style and have the wedding band match the engagement ring? Or opt for something with a bit more personality so that each ring stands out?

Halo rings (a diamond ring design where the centre stone is surrounded by smaller diamonds or gemstones) have become a popular combination for this trend as the rings on either side, which are often also embellished in diamonds, really draw attention to the main gem. A sure-fire way to make people take notice!

Coloured gemstones

Coloured gemstones are still in the minority, but we’ve seen a lot more this year and expect to see them rise in popularity for the upcoming wedding season. Fewer couples are sticking with the traditional options and more are keen to express themselves with all shades of the rainbow!

There's no option too outrageous, from sapphires to rubies, amethysts, diamonds, and emeralds. Couples have rejected the norm and chosen to be bold with their wedding bands… Will you be joining them?

Grooms opting for a more colourful band are experimenting with different metal textures and bright inlays. Engraved detailing can also bring a ring to life, as can injecting a creative element – think herringbone designs, wooden inlays, braided rings, cracked earth details, and even square rings.

P.S. Take a look at these other jewellery-related trends we’ve come across for 2023:

• Many couples became extremely close to their four-legged friends during the lockdowns. It’s no wonder that nearly twothirds of dog owners want to include them in their big day now. Doggie ring bearers is an idea that we are all for, and with many celebs including their pooches on their special day the trend has continued to gain traction! Stacey Solomon involved her dogs Peanut and Teddy in her wedding to Joe Swash, and they even had their own suits!

• The most popular times of year for proposing based on engagement ring sales appear to be December, April, July, and October. Surprisingly, February has the least amount of ring sales… Have Valentine’s proposals become too predictable? ♥

Beautiful You

Hair and Beauty

From hairstyle trends to aesthetics awareness, we’ve got you covered in our hair and beauty lowdown!

Looking for a little bridal hair inspo?

It seems the bun is totally having a moment when it comes to weddings, whether classic and chic or more of a messy bun vibe that feels just right for an intimate ceremony or elopement.

The half up, half down ‘do (a throwback to Kate Middleton’s bride style) has been all over Pinterest and, for summer nuptials, polished ponytails are big news. If you prefer flowing locks, nothing says glamour like Hollywood waves – just look at the loose curls/subtle bouffant style Jennifer Lopez went for when she and Ben Affleck tied the knot.

But, as much as we associate long hair with romance, shorter wedding hair is very cool right now – inspired by Kourtney Kardashian’s flippy bob, perhaps? If you just can’t decide, consider copying the TikToker who went viral after bravely going for the chop between her ceremony and reception. This bride went from ultra-long locks to a lob (long bob), complete with 90s-style flicked ends, in minutes!

The most beautiful version of you

When it comes to beauty, the northeast’s MUAs are super-clued up on the latest trends and what will work with your overall look on the day, whether you’re a bride or groom. Plus, they’re also always on hand to answer the tricky questions you never really want to ask… Can I conceal my acne? How can I prevent my chest from going red on the day? And can you really guarantee my wedding look won’t have slid down my face by 4pm?!

For specific skin concerns, though, consider the awardwinning expertise of a trusted, local doctor led team like Temple Clinic. Specialists in aesthetics, skin and medical services, they concentrate on non-surgical procedures that can transform your complexion.

Check out their wedding-specific packages, which promise magic on the big day and the honeymoon. Bespoke to each person’s requirements and focused around getting the results you want, you’ll find skin, aesthetics and body contouring packages to make you look and feel your best.

Two last tips…

Firstly, don’t forget your teeth because, if this issue’s feature grooms Chris and Stuart have taught us anything, it’s that you’re going to be grinning all day long! Make sure you’re happy with your smile by heading to The Orthodontic Clinic for advice on everything gnasher-related, from whitening to straightening.

Secondly, remember that looking and feeling good starts from the inside and you can do a lot of good by nourishing yourself on the lead up to getting hitched. If you need a little help along the way (having accountability does wonders for getting results!) then talk to a local personal training and/or nutrition specialist. They know their stuff and will be able to produce a bespoke plan geared towards your body and goals. ♥

Flowers Blooming Lovely

Whether you’re after that timeless, classic lily of the valley flower bouquet or have your heart set on something bright and showstopping, there is a floral arrangement out there for everyone! We’ve been scouring through inspo galore to bring you three of our favourite floral trends for this season…

Monochromatic moments

Spice things up by adding depth to your florals with multiple variations of one colour. This is such a small difference but it can make such a statement if done well. If mixing similar shades feels too chaotic but you still want the monochromatic look, try colour blocking with the same tones. This has become popular over the past year, with clearly defined lines dividing each hue within the arrangement for that crisp look. Worth considering if you're a lover of organised colour!

Foliage frenzy

Texture is a game changer for floral arrangements, so experimenting with different foliage can really elevate the look you're going for. Dried flowers, pampas grass and other textural elements add dimension and can really grab your attention!

Sustainably sourced

Why not try finding locally sourced blooms for your big day? Or go one step further and try using silk flowers to create the perfect look that will last a lifetime? These artificial bouquets can then be repurposed for special occasions in your future – or framed and made into sentimental keepsakes.

Overall, be unapologetic with your flower choices, whether that’s taking a stand for tradition or being bold with colour or textures. Which direction will you go in? ♥

Take My Hand

Gemma Bruce and Heather Leighton are bang on trend with choosing to double-barrell their surnames – meet the LeightonBruces who tied the knot in May at Raemoir House, a magnificent exclusive-use venue in the heart of Royal Deeside…

“After meeting online in 2019, we knew within a year that we wanted to get married – but we still had to work out the logistics. We bought our engagement rings in July 2020 and in May 2021 Heather proposed to Gemma in Sutherland’s Grove, near Oban. Gemma followed up in early 2022, popping the question at Meldrum House in Aberdeenshire.

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

We didn’t want a long engagement and our vision for the big day was simply a relaxed family wedding where we could catch up with those closest to us. Finding the right venue was the priority and Raemoir House ticked all our boxes. The fact it was exclusive use was ideal, and we loved the décor and surroundings. We didn’t even need a theme because Raemoir is so beautiful in itself.

Instead, we simply picked what we liked, what would complement one another and what would make the venue shine even more. Our mums helped with a spot of baking – tablet for the favours made by Heather’s mum whilst Gemma’s mum baked the empire biscuits we had in place of a cake.

Dress shopping happened mid-pandemic, which meant picking the gowns we wanted to try before setting foot in the boutique due to quarantine restrictions.

Between that and the added pressure of choosing outfits that complemented one another yet let each bride shine, it was quite the process – but Gemma actually fell in love with the first one she tried on!

We both went for ivory A-line dresses, Gemma’s with lace and a bit of sparkle and Heather’s a classic, belted, off-theshoulder gown teamed with a cathedrallength veil.

We finished off our outfits with jewellery borrowed from family and funky Irregular Choice shoes – Gemma’s blue and Heather’s lilac. Our bridesmaids followed suit in knee-length dresses that meant they could show their personalities with their footwear.

Taking advantage of having the venue to ourselves, we stayed at Raemoir the night before the wedding with the majority of our 56 day guests, enjoying an informal dinner and pre-wedding catch up. It was

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

an early start with having two brides, but it was really relaxed – our suppliers and bridesmaids did an excellent job.

Our ceremony was conducted by a registrar, which meant we could personalise it and invite our friends to do some special readings. After we became Mrs and Mrs, we shared a grazing table with our guests (an alternative to canapes and a starter) then had an excellent meal provided by the venue.

The speeches were emotional –Gemma’s dad spoke and then we spoke – and we followed them up with our first dance, Take My Hand by Skerryvore. Gemma’s always loved that song and we liked how it started slow then got more up tempo – ideal for getting everyone up to dance with us!

The whole evening felt giddy yet relaxed, and our highlight had to simply be having everyone close to us in one room.

It was great to have everyone together and feel their support.

If we were to give one piece of advice to others planning their weddings, we’d say not to be afraid to ask for your suppliers’ advice. They’ve seen what works; they’re a great source of ideas and their input is invaluable.” ♥

Ever wanted to live out your noble fantasies and say “I do” within the walls of a castle or stately home? Well, you can! And with hundreds to choose from throughout Aberdeenshire, you’ll certainly be spoilt for choice.

What’s your narrative?

If being transported into the picturesque world of a Jane Austen novel is what you’re looking for then the exclusive use Ballogie Estate is a fantastic option. You’re going to fall in love with the ivy-covered building (complete with an orangery!) set in the heart of the secluded estate. Not to mention the breathtaking views into the surrounding parkland and heatherclad field… A photographer’s dream!

Need to scratch that Outlander itch with something a bit more traditionally Scottish? Perhaps the Glen Tanar ballroom is for you. With walls adorned in stag heads, stunning exposed beams and a roaring hearth for you

to marry in front of, this rural venue ticks all the right boxes. Plus, with cottages on-site (perfect for wedding morning prep) and an equestrian centre nearby, you’ll truly feel like the laird(s) and/or lady(ies) of the estate.

Bridgerton-inspired regency is still all the rage and a venue that achieves this look splendidly is Raemoir House. Complete with a new on-site kitchen and top-notch catering staff, get ready for a feast in your honour in a country abode that’s exclusively yours. Their timely decor in the garden room, oval room and panelled lounge really make you feel like you could be having tea and discussing your upcoming nuptials with the Duchess herself!

Back to reality

Set your heart on a shortlist? Next step: Budget accordingly!

Do your research and check if your chosen castle or stately home offers packages. These can be real cost-savers, ensuring you’re not overspending on areas you don’t need – and investing in those you really do want to include. Plus, you’ll probably find some added benefits, like an on-site wedding coordinator and maybe even a catering team.

One final tip: These dreamy places often have rules and regulations that need to be adhered to. Most are historic sites and need to be treated with a gentle hand to ensure they remain well-maintained. So, check if there are any footwear requirements or décor do’s and don’ts then make an informed decision on which royal setting takes the crown!

If a castle or stately home isn’t calling your name and a hotel doesn’t quite fit your vision, why not try venturing outside the box? There are unlimited options when it comes to getting married in Scotland so get adventurous and think big!

Chart your own way

If you’re a fan of the high seas, how about taking to the water for your nuptials? It’s possible to get married aboard a boat in Scottish waters so a chartered ride up

www.aboynephotographics.com

the northeast coast would make for a breathtakingly beautiful backdrop to your big day. You can choose from several historic ships docked at Glasgow, Edinburgh or Dundee that could head north and make waves for your wedding celebration!

Worried your guests may get seasick? Opt for some speedboats or row boats to take you to a dreamy, local beach or riverside venue instead!

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

www.byrhea.co.uk

Alternatively, what about a steam train wedding? Make your reception memorable by hiring one exclusively for you and treat your guests to an elegant dining experience in one of the catering carriages. Royal Deeside Railway offers a warm and inviting chartered train service or you can book the exclusive use of their comfortably cosy static MK2 coaches. Plus, the wonderful staff are happy to work with you to make your dream a reality. Yay!

www.jonathanaddie.com

Still talking trains, if a timeless Edwardian elegance is more your style, look no further than the Royal Scotsman Belford for a journey that’s totally tailored to you. Once all the details are finalised, they’ll take care of everything. All you need to do is gather your guests at the platform!

The great outdoors

www.jonathanaddie.com

If you feel most at home breathing in the fresh air, perhaps an outside wedding is for you? An outdoor option is available at most venues but if you want to make sure you’re covered for the unpredictable Scottish weather, a marquee at a location of your choice might provide the perfect balance. We love Waterside, set on South Lasts Farm just outside of Aberdeen city – check it out!

Going further afield, ruins, woodlands, sandy beaches and hilltop venues also fit the bill here, and you’ll find a marquee or yurt will help bring the outside in for your reception.

One quick warning: Be sure to check if you need permission from landowners before you set your heart on a specific spot. But hook up with a northeast marquee supplier early on and they’ll keep you right, for sure.

Rural and rustic

Embrace the on-trend cottage-core vibes with a truly rustic wedding venue, whether that be in a converted barn or a field full of flowers. Perfect your day the organic way with charming fairy lights, hay bales and a horsedrawn cart. Look at ready-to-personalise, renovated barns in Aberdeenshire, like the rustic-luxe Schivas Steading. Many can even provide accommodation for guests – bonus!

There are even some hybrid options – have you seen the barnquee at the House of Elrick? This uniquely creative space is a new collab with the superstars at 3 Tiers Creative and

gives you a cosy atmosphere blended with the outdoor appeal of a marquee. The best of both worlds!

Seeking something smaller and more intimate? A traditional cottage, botanical garden (Duthie Park’s Winter Gardens, anyone?) or a wood cabin are all great choices for a close-knit venue. So, did any of these options pique your interest? Have you got an ‘out there’ venue for your big day? Either way, consider sharing your story with us here at Grampian Wedding Directory. One post-pandemic trend that seems to be here to stay is that of treating your guests like royalty, reminding them how much you love and appreciate them – and often couples choose to reflect this through their food. Some are even cutting guest lists but keeping the same budget so they can really splurge on a dining experience to remember. We’re talking tantalising tasting menus, sommeliers on-site… The works!

Even if you’re not too much of a foodie, though, it’s still worth thinking carefully about because if the meal isn’t good, your wedding will be memorable for all the wrong reasons! Lucky for you, the northeast’s incredible hotels come with some of the most impressive dining offerings around.

The Marcliffe Hotel, for example, like many others, prides itself on innovative creations that showcase some of Scotland’s finest produce, much of it sourced locally from longstanding suppliers. Meanwhile, Meldrum House Hotel boasts the expertise of executive chef Alan Clarke who honed his skills at The Three Chimneys in Skye, helping the iconic eatery retain its three AA Rosettes. Over at Banchory Lodge, you’ll find the funky Fox Box, which can be booked free of charge for cocktails or champagne – perfect for making a statement alongside your canapes during an al fresco drinks reception.

Decisions, decisions…

The Palace Hotel is a popular, long-established venue in North East Aberdeenshire, offering full wedding packages and atmospheric spaces to suit all budgets and any size of ceremony or reception. With 64 contemporary rooms/suites, a host of complimentary extras, a private garden and location near the coast, the Palace Hotel is the ultimate wedding venue.

First things first, you’ll certainly want to do your homework on the hotel’s chef and catering team before you book. If you’re after a fine dining experience, check for any awards or accolades. If sustainability is important to you, how focused are they on sourcing local produce? And if you’re going for something quirky, check the hotel’s social channels for anything particularly innovative the chef has created.

Many hotels will offer a tasting session as standard, or as an add-on, so definitely ask when you can get this booked in. Also ask how many can attend – is it just for the to-be-weds or could your parents join, too?

What to ask

Always visit prospective hotels armed with a whole load of questions, from details on curfews to accommodation options to whether or not fireworks are allowed… So, make sure you add your food queries to the list too.

Here are some suggestions to get you started:

• How many guests can the team comfortably cater for?

• What are your speciality dishes, especially when it comes to serving many people at the same time?

• Can a range of dietary requirements be accommodated?

• What about a children’s’ menu?

• Is there anything innovative you can offer to make our wedding foodie experience unique?

• What's the catering team’s experience with the menus on offer?

• What would you recommend for an evening buffet?

• Who will be in charge of the catering on the wedding day? www.byrhea.co.uk

Let’s talk budget

Make sure to ask about cost, too. Often hotels absorb the price of a meal within a ‘cost per head’ package for each guest, which can also include the likes of a toast drink and perhaps canapes or an evening buffet.

This means you’re likely to have to supply a final head count at some point to ensure the hotel can source enough food for everyone and ensure that nothing ends up going to waste. Make sure to ask when this is due and, at the same time, question how much of a deposit you’ll be expected to pay. Take note of when this (and the final payment) will be due.

Some budget-trimming tips

Taking advantage of a hotel with a highly recommended chef and/or catering team doesn’t have to break the bank…

• Make the hotel team aware of your budget and your dream menu so they can try their best to tick both boxes.

• Much of the cost will depend on your menu and the ingredients needed. But remember that a skilled chef can make even the simplest of foods taste amazing. And it goes without saying that lavishly presented food will scream luxury and make a great impression on your guests.

• Consider keeping it casual with a buffet-style dinner as opposed to a sit-down meal. This will reduce the number of waiting staff needed and help keep those purse strings tight. Buffetstyle can still be fancy, special and quirky – and comes with the bonus that you and your guests can pick what you like in the amounts you like. One thing to note, though – perhaps not the most practical option if you have a lot of older people celebrating with you.

• How about cutting the cake before dinner? The hotel can then plate it up to serve with tea or coffee at the end of your meal. Often guests are so full that desserts go half eaten anyway, so this will cut costs without impacting the overall hospitality experience.

Accommodation

An Extra Special Stay

Post-pandemic, many couples are focusing on really treating their guests. They’re sharing the love with those who mean the most and ensuring their wedding is as special for their nearest and dearest as it is for themselves. But did you know this can start pre-wedding and continue long after the last dance? Just add some wedding vibes wherever they choose to rest their heads:

• Something sentimental: Leave some pics of you and your guests together to remind them of your close bond. How lovely to be greeted by this as they arrive!

• A wee tipple: Pop a mini prosecco on their dresser to be sipped as they prep for the day ahead. Extra points for personalising it!

• A morning after kit: Just add a couple of paracetamols, an Irn Bru and some carby treats to soak up the booze. Hangover, be gone!

Top tip: Ask the accommodation provider about doing this in advance, then drop off everything they need to set up in plenty of time. ♥

The Ultimate White Wedding

Since featuring their impressive ‘iso-wedding’ during lockdown (did you see the epic brunch spread on our Insta!?), team GWD was 100% counting the days until Natalie Chrystall Davidson and Stephen Jack finally tied the knot. Now, newlywed Natalie tells all…

118 ♥ REAL WEDDING

“Our relationship came about naturally – we met through friends, ended up spending a lot of time together and realised we really liked each other. Stephen organised the most romantic proposal when we were in Bali, staying in a seven star resort. A golf buggy picked us up for dinner but, first, took us to the middle of the forest where ‘Will you marry me?’ was spelled out in red roses.

We planned our wedding for 2020 but unfortunately the pandemic had other plans. We still marked the date though, celebrating in the sunshine with a fabulous WEDBrunch. Family and friends surprised us with doorstep gifts and raised glasses from a distance, and we got dressed up for what felt like the first time in forever. We decided that getting married a little later would make it even more special and give us more time to enjoy the build-up… And it was more than worth the wait!

After looking at a total of 16 wedding venues, we found Cluny Castle and picked it for its stunning setting and beautiful chapel. I love planning and events, so worked closely with Supernova to bring my simple, clean and elegant all-white vision to life.

We incorporated pearls because I felt that what they symbolise – loyalty, integrity, purity and generosity – really represents us as a couple, and I carried this theme through to the outfits. I’d looked everywhere for my dress without success and eventually realised while scrolling Instagram that all the dresses I loved were Berta (an iconic fashion house known for its luxury bridalwear). They all had such a significant wow-factor style, but I hadn’t known what it was until then.

By chance, there was a trunk show coming up and, sure enough, I found ‘The One’. It wasn’t what I expected (I’d envisioned myself in a plain and simple gown with just the right amount of glamour) but this dress showed off my figure, had pearls galore and was just ‘me’. I had an overskirt made and added a massive cathedral-style veil for walking down the aisle. The outfit was topped off with a pair of Jimmy Choo bridal shoes; a surprise present from Stephen that one of my bridesmaids presented me with during a dress fitting.

I had the girls’ dresses especially made to fit each of their requirements, finished in a fabric that matched the ivory shade on the outside of my dress. When it came to Stephen’s outfit, we picked the tartan together (we do everything together, really!) and he chose a white tie and white custom-made sporran to match the whole vibe.

We stayed at Cluny the night before the wedding with our families and bridal party. Then it was a relaxing morning getting ready (Kimberly, who did my hair, and Jacquelyn, my MUA, were amazing), complete with delicious breakfast boxes from Reynolds Corporate and Cocktail.

Our romantic chapel ceremony, conducted by a minister friend of my late grandma, was all about love. My mum walked down the aisle before me with Ciara, our daughter, and seeing Stephen waiting was the highlight of my day. I’d waited so long to marry him and the time had finally come!

HEADER

Afterwards, we took a moment to ourselves and shared champagne in the drawing room as man and wife before celebrating with our guests in the grounds. Then it was onto the next venue – the brand-new Union Kirk in Aberdeen where Kelly, the wedding coordinator couldn’t have been more helpful throughout.

Stephen and I travelled in style in a Bentley, organised by my uncle, while our guests lived it up popping bottles of champagne on their coach. We were welcomed with a red carpet and were able to reuse much of the gorgeous décor from Cluny.

We were ‘saxed’ into the reception and straight away there was a party vibe, which we loved – we just wanted it to be fun! Everyone got up on their chairs to sing and dance as we walked in, and this continued throughout the wedding breakfast as our band went round the tables doing an unplugged acoustic set.

We chose not to have evening guests as we didn’t want any time restrictions and, in the end, didn’t finish the meal until 9pm! Our first dance was Perfect by Ed Sheeran, followed by a One Direction song that Stephen dances to with Ciara at home. It was their first ever ‘proper’ dad and daughter dance, and it was so special.

The rest of the night was a mix of the band and sax player, and I never left the dancefloor once – thankfully our guests kept me topped up with Amaretto Sours!”

Keep cosy this winter with warmer red and gold tones and inject that Christmas spirit with some sparkles! Spruce things up by bringing in wooden elements, and combining them with ribbons, winter berries and plenty of fizz. Embellished embroidery and stunning sequin numbers are key for this look, or opt for a classic all-white vision with silver and blue accents to really embody the feeling of a winter wonderland!

Over the last few years, many couples have chosen to get hitched at hotels and other venues where you can stay over the night before you tie the knot – and why not? These superb spaces are often exclusive use and let you really get the party started early!

As much as this allows a definite injec tion of fun the night before, it could leave you missing some joy on the wedding day, though, when it comes to showing off your couple style with top notch transport. You’re well within your right to still want a grand entrance to kickstart the celebrations – and you should defi nitely seek out some of our northeast suppliers to help you do just that.

Last year saw many to-be-weds getting in there early by booking an exclusive minibus to get the bridal party to the venue (perfect for capitalising on those pre-party vibes). A totally luxurious ex perience, this will have everyone feeling like VIPs in no time as the pop bottles, pump up the tunes and take advantage of all the glorious added extras on board.

Event AccessoriesConfetti and More

Confetti helps to make some of the best post-ceremony pics you can get, plus it’s such a fun way of celebrating the newlyweds! But with some venues restricting its use and many couples going green on their wedding day, it’s probably time to look at some alternatives…

The tradition began in 14th century Italy with guests tossing rice, seeds, sweets – and even eggs and mud at the newly married pair! Thankfully, things moved on and by the 1800s, the Victorians had made paper confetti popular.

Time for change again, as people are keen to find less messy, more eco-friendly alternatives. Sound like you? Then listen in…

• Popcorn confetti: Lighter and kinder than rice, it’s biodegradable – and tastes yummy if you have some left over!

• Bubbles: We’re 100% here for this magical option and photographers are capturing whimsical snapshots when bubbles are involved. No environmental harm done and if kids are attending, they’ll be delighted!

• Dried flower confetti: Biodegradable and beautiful, this is becoming super-popular. For extra impact, pick colours that suit your theme.

The best of the rest

Confetti aside, there’s much more on offer in the northeast when it comes to personalising your wedding décor.

Here’s a roundup of our faves:

• Backdrops: Want an ultra-Instagrammable day? Then explore what local suppliers have in terms of stop-and-stare walls (sequin or donut?!), atmospheric arches (balloon or floral?) and LED lights (from funky furniture to large letters).

• Satisfying that sweet tooth: From sweetie carts to ice-cream carts, this trend isn’t going anywhere soon! Choose a vintage-style cart for those rustic vibes or pick a fresh, white station that can be glammed up with colours of your choice.

• Table décor: From chairs and chair covers to centrepieces and favours, show off your style by commissioning a top local company to bring your vision to life.

• Details to dance under: Lighting, draping and even dancefloors can really set the scene for the evening. For fullon glamour, go for a super-sparkly dancefloor with a glitterball installation above. Alternatively, keep it simple with a canopy of fairy lights and bring the outside in with gorgeous garlands. ♥

CeremoniesOfficial Officiants

Unlike some of the ceremonies you’ll be used to seeing on the big screen, getting a friend to officiate isn’t as easy as it looks! In America, luckily anyone can be ordained and conduct a legally binding service. But unfortunately, in the UK that isn’t so. As such, we thought we’d help you out with a handy a list of people who can legally conduct your ceremony – and our top tips on how you can still get your friends involved!

www.aboynephotographics.com

Registrars and celebrants

If you’re opting for a non-denominational wedding, then registrars are called upon to conduct these. And these wonderful civil ceremonies take place in licensed venues, such as the northeast’s stunning stately homes and handsome hotels.

It’s worth noting that these people are highly trained and experts at what they do. So, it’s not possible for someone to just adopt this position in the UK. It’s a full-time role and anyone wishing to get involved would have to apply at their local council or undergo years of training... Not a decision to be made lightly!

In Scotland, there’s also the option of having a humanist celebrant carry out the service and for years this has been increasingly popular with to-beweds. Couples seem to love having the opportunity to work closely with their celebrant to personalise their entire ceremony. Plus, it opens up your venue options because you can literally marry anywhere you like. In this case, Scotland’s your oyster!

Clergy members

If you’re planning a religious service then all priests, rabbis, vicars, and other members of the clergy can carry out the ceremony for you. Did you know that non-ordained religious leaders (otherwise known as members of the Laity; a category nuns fall into!) can also do the job? But if you choose to go down this route, do note that a member of the registrar will have to be there to officiate.

Friends and family

As post-pandemic weddings focus more on the personal touch and really incorporating your nearest and dearest, an increasing number of couples are keen to have a friend or family member managing the nuptials… And there is a way to achieve that! Simply have a registrar or celebrant conduct the legal part then ship your loved one in to perform any non-legally binding parts of the service. Alternatively, opt for a celebration of your love on your chosen date and then do the legal part before or after that day! ♥

Entertainment Entertain with a Bang

Wedding entertainment doesn’t just end with music, in fact nowadays your piper/ singer/band/DJ is only the beginning! How about using fireworks to make the day memorable and full of fun for your guests? Take a breath and watch the lights ignite the sky as you provide the most spectacular ending to your perfect day!

ENTERTAINMENT ♥ 137 www.jonathanaddie.com

Regardless of the season (but especially if you’re planning an autumn or winter wedding), there’s nothing like a firework display to end your celebration. Not only are they visually enchanting and breathtakingly beautiful, but they’ll also help you make memories that last a lifetime. Plus, a cracking firework display will also capture those all-important photographs that are totally Insta-worthy!

Although they’ve been popular for many years with couples portioning a section of their budget just to include a display, fireworks will always be a nice way to surprise and treat your guests. Why not design a customised display, personalised to you and your partner? Award-winning local company NJE Fireworks, for example, offer bespoke options where you choose the music, the style and even the colour – perfect for a couple who want everything to be on-theme!

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk 138 ♥ ENTERTAINMENT
www.elitephotographics.co.uk

Not only do fireworks create a magical atmosphere – they also have the celebrity seal of approval. When Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes tied the knot way back in 2006, they impressed their famous friends with an extraordinary display lighting up the 15th century castle where they exchanged vows. Fast-forward to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s £29 million extravaganza – with not just one but two receptions, the royal couple included a lengthy display at Buckingham Palace.

If you want to save any unwanted stress to children or four-legged friends, a silent display is also an option. This ensures you can still have an evening full of spectacular colours and dazzling lights, minus the decibels!

www.elitephotographics.co.uk

Why not add to the experience with sparklers? We love seeing photos of couples walking through a twinkly arch lined with their guests – an amazing photo opportunity and a lovely send-off at the end of the night. www.deesidephoto.co.uk

Alternatively, a sparkler station means you can keep coming back for more and experience the bright lights all night long!

Whatever you decide, bear the following in mind:

• Request permission from your venue as some can’t permit sparklers and fireworks for insurance purposes.

• Always have a responsible adult around.

• Hire professionals with an impressive safety rating – such as NJE Fireworks - or purchase fireworks that are of high quality to help reduce any risk of mishaps.

• And make sure your photographer is briefed to capture everything!

Consider combining all types of entertainment and hire a musician to play alongside your display. Whether you want a patriotic piper, or your favourite tracks played by a DJ, you’ll create a big impact for your guests!

Now that we’ve discussed ending the evening with a bang, let’s talk about starting the evening with a song!

Get the party started during dinner with a fantastic performance from the Silver Service Waiters who are sure to get your guests riled up for an evening of fun! All part of the surprise, the secret singers will blend in with the staff at your venue and get to know you and your guests before choosing the perfect moment to burst into song.

No two events are ever the same so you can guarantee that their performance will be completely tailored to your big day – allowing you total control of what happens and when. You’ll work closely with an assigned event planner to make sure everything goes off without a hitch!

Northeast suppliers have plenty more entertainment ideas up their sleeves... Which of these work for you?

• Popcorn, ice cream and candy carts – Serve your guests some sweet treats from an oldfashioned serving cart – and have fun with it! Offer a variety of flavours and you can even include toppings. It’s sure to have guests coming back for more.

• Photo booths – Tonnes of fun and the perfect way to capture those silly moments and create lasting memories. Some photo booth hires even offer costumes and props for endless hours of fun!

• Caricaturist(s) – Give your guests the opportunity to leave your wedding with a cartoon keepsake of themselves. These are a great talking point and a great way to remember the day.

CaeksCakes for VIPs

Whilst all eyes are usually on A listers’ wedding attire, London-based cake experts Jack and Beyond spent lockdown analysing and estimating the prices of some of the most extra celeb cakes from the few years prior…

www.byrhea.co.uk

www.jonathanaddie.com www.jenniferriddell.co.uk

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas topped the league table with their elaborate 18-foot tall, tiered cake. Coming in at an estimated £15,000 – and complete with tiny windows and golden baroque detailing – it gives us all the feels of feature couple Chris and Stuart’s elegant cake!

Looking to the Royals, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s leafy, autumn-inspired creation cost around £6,500 whilst Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s still-talked-about deconstructed cake is likely to have set them back just under £3,000.

Meanwhile, reality stars Olivia Buckland and Alex Bowen opted for an eight-tier, traditional masterpiece with golden paint, handmade edible flowers and definite Bridgerton vibes. The price tag? Approximately £3,500.

Keen to channel celeb cake vibes? Do it for a fraction of the cost with these top tips:

• Generally, the taller the cake, the higher the price. Worried a smaller creation may not feed everyone? Order some extra cutting cakes of the same flavour.

• Embrace cupcakes – so many flavours and often a lighter option.

• Half-naked or frosted tiers are often more moderately priced than their sugar paste- or marzipan-covered equivalents. Plus, frosting is great for adding texture.

• The more handmade elements, the higher the cost. Make an impact with just a few very special decorative accents.

• Go for effortless elegance – fresh flowers look great, and they can be matched to your table decs or overall theme.

• Book a consultation with some of the northeast’s fabulous cake bakers. They’ll talk budget, style and expectations then present you with expert suggestions… And let you sample some they made earlier! ♥

Photography Capturing Your Day

Wedding photography and videography has developed (no pun intended!) so much in the last decade, thanks to incredible new tech and the influence of social media. In the northeast, to-be-weds like you have access to some of the top ‘togs around. So, whilst we were digging into the 2023 photo and film trends, we quizzed them on what they’re expecting to see so you can be ahead of the game...

First up, from what we’ve seen and predicted, we reckon…

• Artistic, dramatic black and white shots will bounce back in 2023. Minimal, simple, and timeless, this style can leave room for emotions, evoke a mood and ultimately turn a photo into a true work of art.

• Editorial-style portraits, which are so big on socials right now, will be asked for a lot. Some couples might even colour coordinate their outfits for the photo op!

• Dreamy, elegant veil shots are going nowhere. They’re timeless, elegant, and ultimately a photographer’s (and a bride’s) dream.

• Talking of the leading ladies, sentimental fatherdaughter shots are expected to make their return too.

• Direct flash photography, which makes for stunning portraits with a glam edge, will be increasingly popular, especially for those tying the knot indoors.

• Film cameras are back – get ready for some romantic-looking results…

When it comes to video, we’ve heard that realistic edits, blended with real voices and sounds from the day as well as superimposed music, will be where it’s at.

Whilst full-length wedding videos will always have their place (can you imagine the joy you’d feel showing your children or grandchildren in a few decades time?!) our ever-shrinking attention spans have made the five-minute-long highlights vid a must-have for 2023 weddings. Social media-friendly and perfect for sharing with those who can’t manage the big day, we’re so excited to see these highlight reels popping up!

Trend-overloaded yet? We hope not! Because our local experts definitely know best! Here’s what we expect to see from them in 2023…

With times changing and social media becoming more prominent than ever, relaxed wedding photos are in - and reels, videos and live photos are capturing our attention. Photographers are pushing to replicate this in their work, showing couples at their happiest and most relaxed on their special day through a more candid approach. It’s now much more about shooting the real moments between a couple, like the little kisses and laughs you share.

We’re also expecting to see wedding photography that’s a little more adventurous, and a lot quirkier. We’ve noticed our local shutterbugs like playing with reflections and framing couples within the available surroundings. So, we can expect to see couples taking advantage of their glorious northeast surroundings a bit more in 2023!

With these more relaxed celebrations comes a far less formal style of photography, with fewer traditional poses and more natural, 'as it happens' shots.

That said, planned group photos will still be important to couples - but 2023 will see them being less staged. Next year's bridal party and family pics will be all about fun and high energy!

Finding the photographer and filmmaker for you

Trends aside, when choosing who to capture your big day, there’s a few things to consider. Firstly, look at the outstanding selection of northeast experts online – try to see a whole wedding album or a whole wedding video. Then create a shortlist of those whose styles you really vibe with.

Next, you’ll want to meet a few in person (or on Zoom if easier) to talk about what you want and what they can offer but, more importantly, to see whether they feel like a good fit for you both. Your first meet will be as much about personalities as it is about expertise so trust your gut instinct here – it’ll usually be spot on! www.byrhea.co.uk

Unsure how to approach these meetings?

Go in armed with plenty of questions.

Here are some we prepared earlier…

• How would you describe your style?

• Do you have my date available?

• Can I see a full album/video? How recently was it shot?

• Have you worked at our venue before? If not, will you visit beforehand?

• Have you worked with my photographer/videographer before?

• Can I read some testimonials about your work?

• How much are your services? Is it an hourly rate, or are there package deals?

• When do we need to pay our deposit? And the final balance?

• What information do you need from us before the wedding?

• What time will you arrive at the venue?

• And what time will you stay until? Can we pay extra to have you there for longer if we wish?

• Would you like us to provide you with food during the day?

• Do we need to cover travel costs? If so, how does this work?

• Can others take photos and videos while you are, or do you recommend an unplugged ceremony?

• What are your back-up plans, from potential equipment issues to the rare eventuality of you not being able to attend on the day?

• Can we give you a list of specific shots we’d like?

• When it comes to the final product, is there a guaranteed length/number of photos?

• When can we expect to receive the photos/video? ♥

After the event

From Minimoon to Megamoon

Expert on unique and luxurious holidays, Kuoni opened its new Aberdeen store in Back Wynd earlier this year and we simply had to pick the brains of store manager Chris Winpenny-Cushine on 2023/24 honeymoons. Here’s his lowdown!

“Now the world has opened up, more and more people are planning ahead to get everything they want from their honeymoon. We’re so happy bookings for next year and 2024 are already in full swing.

So far, the top destinations are the Maldives, Bali, African safaris and American road trips… Quite a variety! And a sure sign that, like 2022, it’s going to be all about celebrating the return to worldwide travel after several years without it – think megamoon, not just honeymoon!

Our top hotel in the Maldives has to be the amazing Kuramathi – there’s something for

everyone, and an incredible a la carte, allinclusive package to boot. That said, minimoons are still a hot topic and current favourites are Italy, Greece and the Spanish islands.

My top honeymoon tips would be to book early to get what you want (and perhaps even a special offer), and to fund your adventure through a honeymoon fund. Luxurious newlywed travel is the perfect wedding present, and our free gift list service makes life easy for your guests!” ♥
