PRESIDENT’S report / 2021
T
he year 2021 turned out to be a second year of operating the International Academy in the middle of a pandemic and in an environment where our members had many challenges in traveling from country to country.
Nonetheless, and for all the difficulties during the year, the annual International Emmy® Awards Gala took place in person in New York on November 22nd. Five hundred people took their seats in the ballroom of the new Casa Cipriani and watched one of the Academy’s most exciting Galas in recent memory. The Gala was the only live event of the year and even it had a virtual component, to accommodate nominees and Academy members who still could not leave their home countries. Other Board & Members Meetings during the year were held virtually. The March meeting featured as a speaker Bela Bajaria, the Head of Global TV at Netflix, who was interviewed by Nellie Andreeva, Co-Editor-in-Chief TV at Deadline, and gave a compelling explanation of Netflix operating style and future plans in a much more competitive streaming environment. The November Board Meeting featured Simon Sutton, a former President of HBO and now the head of Luminary, the podcasting company, whose talk was entitled “Is Podcasting the new frontier of storytelling?” In his television days Simon was a Board member and Secretary of the Academy, and it was great to have him back. 4
INTERNATIONAL EMMY® MAGAZINE 2021 / 2022
PRESIDENT & CEO BRUCE PAISNER
Throughout the year, the Academy expanded and built on its innovative M+ virtual sessions, an opportunity for members to network with each other and hear from fellow members in both a formal presentation and informal discussions. Among the people who headlined M+ sessions this year were Ed Wells, EVP and Head of Global Media and Education at Sesame Workshop, and Nicolas Atlan, President of Gaumont USA.
The pandemic caused some loss of revenue, particularly related to the Gala, but other metrics were very strong. Membership crossed the 800 mark and Nominees for our International Emmys in November came from 24 different countries, a record. Clearly the International Academy serves an increasingly important role for media professionals around the world. The Academy is moving aggressively on several fronts to anticipate the needs of our members. An increasing number of our discussions, panels, and presentations relate to streaming, the interplay of television and technology and international cooperation.
I want to thank our multi-year partners who have stuck with us through another year that was challenging for them as much as it was for us. I am particularly grateful to Phoenix Satellite Television from China and its Founder, Liu Changle; Globo, the leading media company in Brazil and the Marinho family; Ay Yapim and its Chairman, Kerem Çatay; and JCSI a Ronald S. Lauder Company and its President, Michal Grayevsky. They all contribute to the Academy on many levels. Both Phoenix and Globo have sponsored Academy Days in their respective countries and Ay Yapim is now scheduled to hold an Academy Day in Istanbul in Spring of 2023.
Without the opportunity for in-person gatherings, the Academy like most organizations relied on virtual communication, and for the most part that worked pretty well. Our Executive Committee met several times this way, our Board & Members Meetings were all virtual and Zoom and Teams became the main stay of interaction among the staff. Like all independent nonprofit organizations, the Academy is dependent on a small and highly talented staff to keep things going. And although the financial pressures were not as great as during the first year of the pandemic, our staff still had to operate at a very high level of efficiency, and they did. We are all indebted to Camille Bidermann Roizen, our multi-talented Executive Director, and her outstanding colleagues for bringing us through another unprecedented year.
We are currently scheduled to hold our Spring 2022 Board & Members Meeting in Berlin, under the auspices of ZDF, a longtime friend and supporter of the Academy, and ZDF’s new Director General Norbert Himmler.
The Executive Committee provided outstanding council and guidance despite some changes in membership and a number of challenging decisions to make. My thanks to Fred Cohen, our Chairman, Kevin Beggs, our Treasurer, Bruce Tuchman our Secretary, and to Adina Pitt, Piv Bernth, Adriana Cisneros, Armando Nuñez Jr., Abbe Raven, and Rainer Siek. Adriana and Rainer both left the Committee midyear and Adina Pitt joined in the Fall.
It is not easy to run an organization based on people around the world coming together on a regular basis when they simply cannot do so, but I think we have found new ways at least to maintain and in some cases, even improve communication and interaction. I look forward to the time – not too far off I hope – when we can combine these techniques with our old and rewarding agenda of getting together in-person.
“The Academy is moving
aggressively on several fronts to anticipate the needs of our members.”
I am writing this report at Hearst Tower in New York. Hearst has been my professional home for many years, and I remain in awe of its executive leadership and of the outstanding results that it produces year after year. Steven R. Swartz, Hearst President & CEO, has been a friend of mine and the Academy’s for many years and the support he provides us, particularly with his personal commitment to our work, continues to be an important factor in our success. Steve’s predecessor as CEO, Frank A. Bennack Jr., is now Hearst Executive Vice Chairman and continues to be a source of inspiration and assistance.

In our study, where we keep so many things dear to my husband and I – such as family photos, the books we love and framed art created by our friends.
I’m working on another project now that is too early to talk about but I’m super excited about it and hope it will resonate internationally in the same way. In general, my passion lies in stories that focus on faith, trauma and identity.

I have an office at home. It’s actually the same room we filmed INSiDE in, Rose’s bedroom - so it feels very fitting that it’s going to end up there. Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?
We made this show for the most micro of budgets, in a country all the way at the bottom of the world. It didn’t occur to us, in our wildest dreams, that we’ d win an Emmy®, but we hope that other creators will see that money and access and all that doesn’t really matter. If you make something you love, others might love it too.
Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? Our team at Luminous Beast is working on a dark comedy television series that explores mental health and the increasing disconnection of our world. It has a sci-fi premise, but we’re excavating the human heart within it. We’re also developing new seasons of INSiDE, which follow similar themes of season one - loneliness, loss, fear and isolation. Each series will be set against a completely new backdrop with all new characters attempting to navigate their physiological and supernatural journeys.

Where are you going to keep your Emmy®?
Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?
In the studio at Aardman – it’s a team Emmy® and belongs to the whole crew and in particular Tom Parkinson, the series director. Shaun the Sheep is something which pretty much everyone at Aardman has a part of at some point in their career and it’s a character and show that evolves and improves with each new collaboration.
Pretty much everything in development is top secret but we are currently in production with 2 brilliant new series. The Very Small Creatures is a pre-school spin off from Morph and is directed by Lucy Izzard. It’s a show about little balls of brightly colored clay that explore a child’s play area. I love it because it is intrinsically Aardman, but also has a wonderful new voice in Lucy and her take on that world. Our other Q Tell us about the importance of winning cherished project is Lloyd of The Flies another micro world ® an Emmy ? – this time a family sitcom with insects featuring Lloyd, a fly Everyone works so hard on our productions and we are and the middle child of 453. It’s our first CG series and looks driven by the desire to create really high- quality content incredibly beautiful. It’s directed by Matthew Walker and is that resonates with its audience. An Emmy® is a tangible of course hilarious. recognition that we have succeeded in that and keeps the energy and drive fueled for future projects.

Jack is an early-career writer hailing from the UK. He studied at the University of Cambridge, performing onstage and writing comedy in between reading a few books for his degree. He went on to study at Mountview in London, one of the leading drama schools in the UK. After graduating from drama school in 2019, he wrote and performed in his first play, I Woke Up Feeling Electric, a one-act existential comedy about a cheery AI assistant who starts to chafe against the role assigned to him. This play debuted in November 2019 in London, before he staged a revised version in February 2020. His play came down around three weeks before the whole world did! Although much of his experience so far lies in writing for the stage, he has been branching out into writing screenplays and teleplays.
Sam Shore, Screenwriter Jason Spencer, Writer Daniel Voll, Screenwriter, Producer
About The Corpse that Went to War It’s 1943 and the Nazis are winning. Luckily, Ewen Montagu hits upon an idea that might just change everything. All he has to do is convince his superiors he isn’t crazy and make the Germans believe in a man who never existed. But first – he needs to find a corpse…
