Inspired by Sketches Each and every month, our monthly sketch designer, Jennifer Edwardson, provides our Sketchy Gallery Facebook group with a NEW 12″×12″ scrapbook layout sketch. Sketches are my GO-TO inspiration when I am starting a layout, especially when I haven’t scrapbooked in a long time, OR I just want to get the layout done so I can tell the story, OR I just want to be inspired. For me, sketches are a PERFECT starting point. Sometimes my final design looks EXACTLY like the sketch, and sometimes it looks nothing at all like it!

you can use them for any size of layouts, including cards. That’s right. A 12″×12″ scrapbook layout sketch could be all the inspiration you need for your next card.

Sketches are also extremely versatile. You can turn them, flip them, cut them in half, only use a section of them, AND

Get your SKETCHY on, my friends!

Whether you are new to using sketches or have been using them for years, our Sketchy Gallery Facebook group is the place to be! Each month, a new sketch and TONS of takes on the sketch are uploaded to inspire us all! Perhaps the best part is seeing how ONE sketch can be interpreted so differently by so many different designers. We wanna see your take!

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER KATHARINA DOYLE

Words

matter

Whether you are delivering a serious message or just trying to be funny, words really matter. I am an expressive person, and I still do not always have the words I need. This can arise in a discussion involving complex feelings, or when trying to convey a delicate situation. It also happens in my scrapbooking when trying to create brief and accurate captions or unique titles. Of course, this is frustrating, and I know I am not alone. Our challenge as humans is to share our experience so we are truly understood. Fortunately, I recently found two amazing books by Susie Dent, “The Emotional Dictionary” and “Word Perfect”. These will help me communicate an intended nuance in my layouts and greeting cards. Unexpectedly, I began 2023 by learning new vocabulary. Some new words I’ve picked up are old English words that are the lost positives of words we are already familiar with. Two examples I just love are

gruntled (satisfied, at ease, and content), and ruthful (compassionate). I’d like to think my grandchildren will use these to describe me in a scrapbook layout someday! So, as it is my job, I’d like to challenge you. Think deeply about what you would like others to take from your craft and then do the work of finding the right words. Few of us can write like Shakespeare, and who has the time?!? But being intentional in what we express will always be meaningful. Always hug hard,

12 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023

Katharina

Here are more words I just learned:

confelicity : (19th century) ~ the pleasure found in other people's happiness

respair : (16th century) ~ fresh hope

dumfungled : (19th century) ~ utterly exhausted, worn out

snuzzle, snoodging, snudge, and snerdle : (17th & 19th century) ~ all verbs for lying quiet and still; snuggling under a blanket

matutolypea : [mah-tu-toh-lip-ee-ah] ~ extreme grumpiness in the morning. From Latin and Greek, suffering of the dawn.

crambazzlement : (Old Yorkshire term) ~ looking prematurely aged from excess partying

HEART & SOUL

Figures 1

What is a photo worth? I’ve now dunked two cameras in the water. The most recent was actually my cell phone, but let’s face it, our phones are our cameras nowadays. We take them everywhere with us and yes, I was floating on the river when it happened and yes, Figure 1 shows the final photo captured moments before the sordid ordeal. For giggles, I thought I’d also revisit the demise of my expensive SLR camera in the ocean a decade earlier. Consider it a bonus cautionary tale! At least when I drowned my SLR, I was able to salvage the photos from the memory card, but after 3 weeks in rice, my cell phone was still dead. Allison, didn’t you have your photos backed up in the Cloud? Sigh. Nope. Sadly I had run out of storage a few months prior and kept ignoring the annoying warning message, thinking I would clear out some unwanted photos and be good again. I never did. Allison, there are ways to recover your cell phone photos. Yes, yes, there are, but the quote for my phone was $800 and no promises. I stood there stunned as the tech continued to explain many techie things, and I began to wonder: Need a giggle and a cautionary tale? Scan the QR code to watch the demise of Allison’s SLR camera.

30 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023

What is a photo worth? What photos are on my phone that I NEED and what can I live without? How much am I willing to pay to retrieve them? And I still have to buy a new phone!

Figure 2 I told the tech I needed time to decide. On the way home, I began to cry as I ruminated over all my lost photos… golfing with my 90 year old Dad, a trip to Denver, our summer camping vacation, Creative Scrapbooker Carnivals, and most importantly my epic mother/ daughter trip to New York. Ugh. That one hurt the most.

Once home and calmed down, it dawned on me that I frequently post on social media! After scouring Facebook and Instagram posts, I found photos online from most of the important memories and even a video reel of me golfing with my Dad.

Best of all, I had posted 23 pictures while in New York with my daughter that showcased the highlights of our trip (Figure 2). Thank you, Jesus!! Yes I had taken over 300, but maybe 23 are enough?!

Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023 31

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

Figure 3

If a photo is worth a thousand words, how many photos do I really need to trigger the memories, emotions, and stories?

32 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023

Even one single photo carries immense power. Partner that with some journaling and we are able to reminisce for years to come! Although I lost hundreds of photos over the 4 months, I decided I could live with what I was able to retrieve online (Figure 3)

and instead put the $800 towards a new phone… a waterproof one with the best camera out there to capture even better photos over the next few years! Oh and the nominal fee to increase my storage is the best money spent to avoid this tragedy happening again.

MINI-ALBUM WORKSHOP

Creating ART Soothes the Soul with Allison Orthner

“The main purpose of Soul ART is to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do.”

46 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023

If you have ever created anything, chances are you have already experienced how it can soothe the soul. It can be paper crafting, scrapbooking, painting a canvas, or other artistic endeavors such as photography, quilting, gardening, or writing music.

BIBLE ART JOURNALING

FINDING REST IN THE BUSY Allison Orthner, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: DecoArt Chalk Gesso in white, DecoArt acrylic paints (burnt umber, hunter green, primary red, sea spray, white and black), Soul ART tissues, quotes, napkins.

SCRAPS OF INFO Although the base begins with dark blotches of colour to represent the chaos of our busy lives, a soft spa-like blue covers over top, portraying how our souls are soothed when we find rest in God.

Creating soothes the soul! There is something deeply moving about bringing to life something that didn’t exist before, especially when you are the creator. I often find myself “in the flow” where time seems to stand still, my worries take a vacation, and I’m shocked at how much time has elapsed when I finally look. Even science provides evidence of a shift in our body when creating! Creating reduces stress and taps into our emotions in

healthy ways to make us feel good. As we create, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter Dopamine is released, boosting our mood and ability to focus. Soul ART projects then take this creative state even deeper by including other activities, such as prayer, meditation, journaling, symbolism, and music to create an extra soul-soothing experience while creating a mixed media piece.

Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023 47

A final reason that creating art soothes the soul is simple: God, the original Creator, created us in His image so it makes sense that our souls are soothed when we create as well.

CREATED TO CREATE Laura Laforest, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Thrive Bible, His Palette and Praise & Pray Esty shop printables, Close to My Heart ink and Ranger ink.

SCRAPS OF INFO Laura used other artist’s printables to add to the art she created inside her Bible.

SCRAPS OF INFO “When I received your email about my submissions, I was ecstatic, so much that I almost cried. The recipe album is a labor of love, a family treasure of hope turned into an heirloom as it passes through generations. My Mom passed away in 2004 and when the original album full of recipes fell apart, I was devastated. But my hubby said, “You can scrapbook the recipes into a new album” and so after many hours the new album was created. This album is to be passed on to my children and then their children. The handwritten recipes are well loved as you can see from some of discoloration on the pages. I included many photos of my mother. This was a sentimental and heartwarming task.” ~ Carmelita Cechetto-Shea

3. Die cut a piece of scrap paper with the tab die, and stamp with the “xoxo” from the Let’s Stick Together Stamp Set. Then watercolour as shown. Die cut a piece of watercolour paper with the canvas die from Planner Essentials 59, and stamp with a bee from English Countryside 1. Watercolour your bee, and let dry. With the matching bee die, create a cutout, and cover your bee stamp. Then splatter the canvas with the Distress Spray Stain to give a paint splatter effect. Finally, die cut your artist's palette and watercolour as shown. 4. Die cut the artist's easel out of real wood paper or basal wood backed with double-sided adhesive, and edge with the Distress Ink. 5. To create your jar, cut out your jar base, jar overlay, lid, and acetate piece. The overlay and the lid are backed with doublesided adhesive before die cutting. You can use a piece of washi tape to keep track of your acetate. Attach the lid to the overlay, 66 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023

and stick the overlay to the acetate. Very carefully put glue around the outline of the jar and on the side of the lid, but not on the top. The jar should remain open at the top to slide your brushes in later. Glue down your pieces to the base jar.

6. Die cut your brushes out of watercolour paper. Colour the handle of the brushes with any permanent markers as shown. Use the Distress Watercolor Pencils to colour the brush tips. Apply double-sided adhesive to your metallic paper, and then die cut the handles and apply to your brushes. Tuck your brushes into the jar. Assemble your page as shown, and enjoy your finished planner page!

Happiness and Love Nicole Wright, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Ranger Yupo alcohol ink paper, alcohol ink, blending solution and Archival ink, Stamper Anonymous Tim Holtz, Wild Whisper Nicole Wright stamp, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L E-Z Runner Grand and 3D Foam Squares, unknown heat gun, kraft paper, binding ribbon and chipboard.

TECHNIQUE TASTERS

ALCOHOL INK BACKGROUNDS

1. Drop several drops of a variety of colours of alcohol ink on a piece of Ranger Yupo paper. I sprinkle the alcohol ink like I would shake a pepper shaker.

3. Use a heat tool to blend the alcohol colours as well as set and dry them. Turn the heat gun on and off during the drying process to help reduce the curling of the Yupo paper.

2. Once the alcohol ink is added, shake a little Ranger Alcohol Blending Solution over top. For this step a little goes a long way. This will blend the alcohol ink colours together, creating a mottled effect. Move the Yupo paper around to create drips and pools of colour.

4. I stamped Stampers Anonymous Glorious Bouquet in the corners with Ranger Archival jet-black ink.

There are no limits to what you can make—a background for cards, tags, or scrapbook pages. Stamp over top, diecut, and add embellishments.

CREATE AN ASYMMETRICAL PAGE BORDER WITH THE MONSTERA LEAVES BORDER PUNCH

1. Fold a piece of double-side patterned paper in half from corner to corner.

3. Continue punching all the way to the folded edge. Remove the strip and unfold to reveal an L-shaped border.

5. Add the red geometric border stickers along two edges of the square.

2. Place the paper in the punch, lining up the edge where the two corners matched with the black line on the front of the punch. Punch, then move the paper along the base plate until the punched shape matches the shape printed on the base plate.

4. Flip over the L-shaped border strip to show the pattern on the opposite side. Adhere to a piece of dark green patterned paper as shown. Trim the large square to 10″ and adhere to base, leaving approximately ¼″ border all around.

6. Cut one of the large Variety Mat Cards in half and tuck under the edge of photo for journaling. Finish by adding embellishments as shown or desired. Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023 71

USING DIE CUTS FOR ADDED POP

3. Die Cut a piece of Pink &Main patterned paper with the largest die from the Pink & Main Stitched Rectangles die set #1. Use liquid adhesive to adhere Sunburst cover die cut on top.

6. Die cut your sentiment using the Pink &Main Stitched Circle die set, and then use the same die set to cut a larger circle from vellum.

4. Heat emboss your sentiment from the Pink & Main Spring Sayings stamp set in frosting embossing powder, using your heat gun.

String of Hearts

Welcome to "Love Letters" a series of lettering articles written and illustrated by Kelly Klapstein. In each issue, Kelly will guide you through easy-to-follow tips and tricks as you learn the beautiful art of hand lettering.

76 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023

LOVE LETTERS

1

In previous articles, I’ve shown how to use your brush pens “out of the box” for lettering. In this issue, I’ll show you a different technique for making “heart strings” to use on Valentine greetings or wedding/anniversary cards and tags. Making hearts with brush pens is a fun technique to create lettering or design embellishments.

2

The brush tip is flexible, and when you can push down on it, you can create a teardrop shape. When two teardrops are connected, they form tiny, perfect hearts! Practice making a bunch of these hearts before stringing them together to create letters on your card or tag. NOTE: Push the pen tip down so that the entire side of the brush tip is in contact with the paper; then lift straight up to avoid smudging.

1. First, use a pencil to draw script or block letters on white cardstock. 2. Use your brush pen to make hearts along the pencil lines of the letters.

Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023 77

3

4

3. Draw connecting lines between the hearts with a black fine-liner to create the strings of hearts.

You don't even have to use this technique for lettering a word or phrase. You can just draw swirls or even vertical lines of hearts on your cards and projects. Filling a white card background with swirling strings of hearts would also be super cute. If you think outside the box, your creativity will surprise and delight you!

4. Add a written sentiment, or just leave as is.

What’s All the Fuss About?

What is the ultimate classical technique for paper crafters? Fussy cutting! It may even be that scissors were invented just for this. Anything can be an embellishment as long as your scissors can reach it, and there is no more economical way to add elements to your designs. With fussy cutting, you can add mementos to your layouts, cut a notch into beautiful, patterned paper to tuck your photo behind, crop images from pictures, and add layer after gorgeous layer. All it takes is a pair of scissors, the memory of your first-grade teacher guiding you through good cutting techniques, and perhaps a little patience, and you’ve got yourself instant elements for all your projects.

Brick contributes an excellent design element to cards and scrapbook pages by adding texture, a geometric pattern, and a sense of solidity. It can feel traditional, industrial, rustic, or edgy, depending on how the creator uses it in the project. A brick motif is a surprisingly flexible element, providing the option to use bold or soft colours, an embossed texture, or flat image to create a subtle background or a major feature. We give a solid 10/10 and stack up the kudos for this gallery filled with brick-spiration!

Journaling is the very heart of scrapbooking. Not only does it record important facts for future generations, such as who, what, when, and where, but it can also be cathartic to the storyteller who is sharing their intimate thoughts and feelings. Given its integral role in scrapbooking, why not add some creativity by twisting those words into interesting shapes that also help tell the story. For example, journaling about reading habits become the pages of a book or Christmas memories become part of the Christmas tree. What a delight to see stories come alive and take shape in your memory books! . 98 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023

Yes, I have chosen pigment ink, again, for its extreme light-fastness, as I want to use this banner from year to year. The pigmented markers have the same capabilities and blendability you will love. So, if you are ready to announce the spring, grab a selection of your Art Impressions Rubber stamps, spring-like colours from your Tsukineko pigment ink stamp pad collection, some paper raffia, and let’s make a banner that will make you smile for many springs to come.

Spring Banner Cathie Allan, Stony Plain, Alberta SUPPLIES: Art Impressions rubber stamps and dies, VersaColor pigment ink, VersaFine ink, OLFA cutting mat and craft knife, Faber-Castell PITTpens, Tonic Studios Nuvo watercolour pencil, gamsol, blending stump, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L 3D Foam Circles, unknown raffia, embossing powder, kraft cardstock, blending brushes.

See Cathie’s instructions on how to create this banner next page >

Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023 103

IT’S ALL ABOUT RUBBER

1. Using an Art Impressions tag die set, cut out the largest tag from kraft coloured cardstock.

2. Using a blending brush, apply white pigment ink to the edges, leaving a small portion in the centre untouched.

3. Use the eraser end of a pencil and white pigment ink to stamp white dots on the tag. Repeat Steps 1 to 3 to create five more tags. Set tags aside.

4. Stamp a variety of the Art Impressions bunny images, using black VersaFine ink on a white piece of cardstock.

5. Colour the images FIRST with Faber-Castell PITT artist pens. Add shading over top with Tonic Studios Nuvo highly pigmented watercolour pencils. Blend the colours, using gamsol and a blending stump.

6. Fussy cut TWO of the same bunny images using an OLFA craft knife and cutting mat. Leave a slight white border around ONE of the images and NO border around the second image.

104 Creative Scrapbooker | Spring 2023

IT’S ALL ABOUT RUBBER

7. Use 3D foam tape to adhere the bunny with NO border onto the bunny with the white border. Repeat this process for five more images.

8. Using Art Impressions alphabet die and white cardstock, cut out the letters to spell SPRING. Ink letter S with turquoise ink, and emboss with clear embossing powder. REPEAT using different colours on the remaining letters.

SCRAPS OF INFO This detail shows the dimension created from the 3D foam and layering process ~ done in Step 7.

9. Die cut white tags from heavy Super Stock. Adhere them to the back of the decorative kraft coloured tags. This will make them STURDY. Assemble the tags as shown. Embellish with raffia and string together to form a banner.

By Jammie Clark

1 Stamp 3 Ways

How many times have you looked at a stamp and thought, “What else could I do with it?” I literally ask myself that every time I purchase a stamp. This particular stamp was a no-brainer for me, as I saw so many possibilities. The brown bear with blonde companion was the first thing that came to me. However, I wanted to change the ethnicity of the human, while making the bear seem like they would be from the same region of the world. While pondering how I could make the entire image look different, I had a stroke of inspiration: bears don’t always have to be one specific colour. OMG, panda bear! What goes better with a black-and-white palette than bright red? Stamps can be re-imagined simply by changing your colour palette, or stepping back and taking a different perspective. Think of all the possibilities for using one image (i.e., holidays, occasions, even layouts and colour plays). This adds so much value to your stamp and your entire collection as well. Your only limit is your imagination. This stamp was created as a symbol of me and my husband (who is literally named “Barry”). I have struggled with panic and anxiety disorders from a very young age. Reading is my escape from the irrational thoughts that cloud my brain in anxiety-inducing situations. My husband told me that no matter what happens, he will protect me. The image of the girl reading is the escape from reality. The bear is not necessarily listening to her read aloud, but keeping watch to protect her from everything around her, even herself.

Frosty days behind us; a warmer feeling descends over the earth. Snow trickles away, leaving mud, puddles and gentle breezes in its place. Nesting birds return as the earth springs forth with new leaves and blossoms. There is a fresh spirit in the air and the less hardy among us return to the outdoors. New memories are created. New life begins. New hope emerges. And so, a new cycle of life begins…and scrapbookers capture those precious, tender moments. Enjoy this gallery filled with spring inspiration!

Sealed with a

Kiss

Sending your mom a card on Mother’s Day is a tradition with heart. Whether you see your mom weekly or yearly, a card with a note telling her what she means to you means the world to her. Taking the time to create a card just for her adds to the written sentiments in the card. It wordlessly shares your love and appreciation of her, while letting her know she is worth more than anything that can be bought in a store. Take some inspiration from our SWAK gallery and create something for your mom, your favourite mom friends, and for women who uplift and inspire you!
