VILLAGE I NSPIRED PEOPLE OF

See you at the Village! If there is one thing that COVID has taught me more than anything else this past year-and-a-half it’s how incredibly important it is to stay connected. Community really is everything. Not only for the amazing things that we can accomplish when we come together, but more importantly for our mental health and general well-being. As I sat at home missing my scrappy friends, longing for a coffee with my peeps, browsing through our favourite stores, and taking part in those AMAZING weekends away paper crafting all night long, I turned to the Internet, as many of us did. I knew I wasn’t the only one feeling this way. Thousands and thousands of people were searching for the same thing—a tiny piece of community. Everyone was looking for that one place (insert theme song from the 1980s hit sitcom “Cheers”) where everybody knows your name! BOOM! The Creative Scrapbooker Magazine VIP CLUB (or Village of Inspired People) was born. We want you to join our community—our little Village online. Here you will find like-minded crafty souls, ideas, inspiration, giggles, classes, tips, demos, and so very much more. Our Village was created for YOU to make friends, to stay connected, to share the love of scrapbooking, while all the while interacting, learning, and getting to know everyone on a more personal level. Did I mention fireside chats with your favourite beverage? I am so excited to get to know you all outside the pages of the magazine, to see what you are crafting, and to learn from a sea of amazing instructors. Did I mention prizes, challenges, crops, and pyjamas? Just another creative day in the Village!!! Visit CreativeScrapbooker.ca/VIP for all the details and to sign up to be a Villager! See you there.

Jackie

There is nothing that compares to that little bit of well-being you experience when you have your favourite beverage in hand. It could be the moment of peace you get when you sip coffee during a busy work day. Or the fellowship experienced sharing a pot of tea while catching up with a cherished friend. It could even be the feeling of joy as you toast an accomplishment with champagne or unwind with a beverage to ease out of a hectic day. Whatever you have in hand, your favourite drink is sure to give you pause and bring a smile— and so will these cards and scrapbook pages!

Meet My Best Friend!

Pets give us unconditional love, a listening ear and faithful companionship. Many people took advantage of the time afforded them during global shutdowns to finally get a “pandemic puppy” or “covid kitty.” Now, approximately 70% of North American households have at least one pet, and they are considered full members of the family. From pedigree to rescue, every pet adds so much to the families they are part of, and as you can see from our overflowing gallery, their families are grateful for the gift of their furry friends!

Storytelling Photo Fun –through Part 2 Photos By Allison Orthner

I LOVE A GOOD STORY. Comedy, romance, suspense, intrigue. I love it all! As humans, we are drawn to stories. It is why we watch TV, read novels, and go to the movies. It is also the foundation of why we scrapbook—to tell our stories. With photography, every photo captures a moment, but not all photos tell a story.

Why are some photos just a picture, while others draw you into a story? I’ve been analyzing this recently while following a few “photog-crushes” of mine (JeremyCowart.com and BenjaminCole.com), who are master storytellers through their images. This type of photo not only requires skills in composition, lighting, etc., but storytelling images also seem to contain a few other common traits:

EMOTION. We are drawn to emotion, especially extremes: happy is nice, but ecstatic is magnetic; sad is moving, but despondent is compelling. In Figure 1, we are immediately drawn to the deep emotion on the face of the man dancing with the bride. It tugs on our heart, and once we know the real story, it intensifies even more.

Photo Scavenger Hunts Who doesn’t love a scavenger hunt? Part 2 of our fun photo activities explains three ways to enjoy a photo scavenger hunt perfect for families, friends, or groups from church, school, or any community. Simply grab your people, cameras, or cell phones and come together for a fun way to connect and enjoy the warm outdoor days of summer!

1. Photo Scavenger Hunts The easiest way to create a photo scavenger hunt is to choose a topic/theme for participants to collect images of in a specific location (time limit optional) and go!

BY ALLISON ORTHNE

R

Some examples are: • First group to capture their entire team playing on five different playgrounds. • Capture photos of as many different animals at the zoo in 1 hour. • Build and photograph as many different sand creations in one month. • Best creative selfie taken within the next 5 minutes. Repeat as you change locations. • See how many different flowers (or live critters) you can find and photograph during our walk. Figure 1. THE REAL STORY: This bride danced with her uncle who lost his wife (her aunt) the week prior to the wedding. Before passing, the aunt requested this dance in her honour. LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

2. The Great Photo Race This one takes more preparation, but can be a ton of fun for several groups to do together. Choose key places within an area, come up with clues for each, seal in envelopes, and then send groups driving, biking, or walking to solve the clues to find each location. At each spot, they must capture a creative photo of their entire group, then move on to the next envelope and location. Be sure to all finish at a common spot to share photos and give BONUS points for the most creative team photo from each location. 3. Photo Bingo Combine a photo scavenger hunt with a bingo game! Select a wide variety of topics and themes dependent on age of participants and location, and then fill a Bingo card. The goal is to capture the entire card, have fun, and be extra creative with each image.

Each of these photo scavenger hunts can be adapted for all ages and not only develop your photography skills, but help you enjoy the beautiful weather and have fun exploring different areas around your city.

Plastic is ubiquitous in our lives. There are so many different kinds and some of the plastic lying around our household is potentially useful for scrapbooking and card making. Check out your cupboards and recycling bin and see if anything catches your eye. Some plastics can be used as is, such as plastic straws, tablecloths, mesh bags, and bread tags, while other plastics can be transformed by heating or colouring. Some plastic is easily cut

with dies and scissors to make stencils, masks, and other embellishments, or it can be dry embossed or foiled if it’s fairly thin and flexible. Clear plastic packaging often is well suited for dry embossing and die cutting. If you don’t have suitable plastic in your house, you can buy craft plastic and acetate at scrapbooking stores to try some of these techniques. Check out some of these ideas for using plastic in your paper-crafting projects.

Workspace Organizers

One thing that is often overlooked is staying organized with the project you are physically working on in the moment. If you find yourself with no workspace because your desktop is covered with supplies you’re currently using, then you need a workspace organizer.

What is a workspace organizer?

Before A workspace organizer is a simple tool that gives you a place to put the materials and supplies you’re currently using. A couple of examples are the Craft & Carry Workstation and the Die, Stamp & Supply Organizer. These are part of the Totally-Tiffany brand, but you may have something similar at home. Look for something with a variety of heights and sections.

Three reasons for using a workspace organizer 1. Having an organizer for all of your tools and materials reduces clutter and frees up space on your work surface. Less clutter and more open work surface will contibute to your creativity. 2. You’ll get more craft projects completed in less time. When using a workspace organizer, you’ll avoid burying things such as your scissors, pens, rulers, or tape runners. Your tools and supplies will be more visible and accessible. The wasted time and

After frustration you experience while “tapping for buried treasure” under your paper and supplies will disappear.

and move around your room, easily putting your remaining supplies back where they belong.

3. Clean up is simplified. Cleaning up after a craft project is often the worst part of crafting. One of the biggest advantages to using a workspace organizer is that everything is already in one place. You can pick up the organizer

Added BONUS – If you don’t finish the project, you can simply move the organizer off your desk and onto a shelf or into a closet, and when you have time to craft again, everything is ready to go. Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2021 71

Game On Noreen Smith, Calgary, Alberta SUPPLIES: All supplies by Creative Memories including the new Circle Cutter.

74 Creative Scrapbooker | Summer 2021

Scraps of Info Trust Creative Memories to create a new tool that can cut AND draw circles in any size from 3” to over 11”! See how Noreen used it to cut the circle and outline it in the layout shown.

TIPS FOR USING THE NEW CREATIVE MEMORIES CIRCLE CUTTER

1. Place your paper onto the 13″ × 13″ Custom Cutting System Mat. Use

a pencil and the zero-centering ruler to mark the centre of your circle with intersecting lines on your paper. These lines will help you position the Circle Cutter.

3. Place the dial/guide on top of the intersecting lines, lining up the two

black guidelines on either side of the dial with the vertical pencil marks. Ensure that the horizontal pencil marks are in the centre of the window as you look down from above.

5. When drawing circles with the Circle Cutter, use the black markings

that run from 11.25″ to 3″. Unscrew the white dial and slide the guide along the cutter until the black line matches the desired circle size. Tighten white dial. In this example, an 8.5″ circle will be drawn.

2. When cutting circles with the Circle Cutter, use the white markings that

run from 3″ to 12″. (Note that the white markings for cutting on the opposite side are shown in cm.) Unscrew the white dial and slide the guide along the cutter until the black line matches with the desired circle size. Tighten white dial. In this example, an 8″ circle will be cut.

4. To cut the circle, press down on the blue dome on top of the dial/guide

to secure the cutter to the paper. Press in the white button on the blade housing to engage the blade, and rotate the blade around, just as you would rotate a protractor. When finished, release the white blade button and lift the cutter up.

6. To draw the circle, place the dial/guide in the centre of the circle.

(Note that you may want to measure to find the centre.) Press down on the blue dome on top of the dial/guide to secure the cutter to the paper. Place the Fine Tip end of a Creative Memories Dual-Tip Pen into the pen receptacle on the end opposite from the blade housing, and rotate the pen around, just as you would rotate a protractor.

COFFEE FILTER FLORALS

1. Lay your NWD stencil on a coffee filter, and add a few random sprays

with Ranger Dina Wakley Gloss Spray. Remember to protect your work station when using sprays.

3. Create at least three patterned coffee filters. This is such a fun

process, I know you will create more.

2. Repeat Step 1 with two complementary colours of the Ranger Dina

Wakley Gloss Spray. I spray each colour three times in a triangular pattern to achieve even coverage.

4. Select your favourite floral die cut, and start cutting out your flowers.

Then start building and adhering as many layers together as you like to create beautiful paper flowers for your next project.

Scraps of Info I have found that I am able to cut six coffee filters at once with my die cut machine. However, separating the cut petals can be tricky. Much like opening a produce bag at the grocery store. It helps to have a paper pick on hand to separate the die cut petals.

Article by Connie Nichol.

Brushstroke is an easy-to-use iPhone app that allows you to turn the photos on your phone into paintings. It was free when I installed it a few years ago, but now it looks like it costs a few dollars to buy. It’s worth it, in my opinion. It offers more than 50 different presets in a wide variety of painting styles, including watercolour, acrylic, oil, lead pencil, gloss, and abstract. Simply open your photo in the app, and select the style that you want to apply. You can then adjust the intensity, contrast, saturation, and many other factors to achieve just the look you want, whether it be subtle or well defined. It’s fun to play with and can give a special picture that extra-special touch. I decided to start a “Self-Care” journal, using a Traveler’s Notebook (TN) from Echo Park. These TNs come with one notebook insert and have elastics that can hold many more inserts. Echo Park has a wonderful assortment of inserts in various themes, lined and blank pages, and daily calendars. There is

also a wrap-around elastic binding to slip around the entire notebook, plus an elastic pen holder. The pockets inside can hold pens and other items you want to use in designing your journal pages. Some people use their TN for scrapbooking, planning, organizing, etc. These versatile

notebooks are also easy to slip into your handbag when you’re on the go.

I was excited to use some new Zebra pens to add happy colours and write notes in my TN and other planners. Zebra has a set of six black, waterresistant brush pens with three different tip sizes.

I designed simple monthly cover pages for this self-care journal, with space to write reflections and activity ideas/ goals. These pens glide effortlessly on the smooth paper in this TN insert.

is so challenging when we have families, work and busy lives, but the rewards are immense. I highly recommend starting a self-care journal to bring creative calm into your daily life.

They write beautifully, and the pigment is a true black. I used these black brush pens to write “Self-Care” on the first page of my TN insert. The Zebra Mildliners come in both brush pen and highlighter sets. They are double-ended, and the colours are so pretty! I like using the other side of the brush pen to draw monochromatic shadows on the letters I write.

I use Zebra Mildliner highlighters to ‘cross off’ things on lists and also to identify important notes, but they are also fun to use to draw lines on the blank pages in these inserts for an extra pop of colour. Stationery shopping is another selfcare activity for me! Haha! I’m loving these Zebra pens and am motivated to write in my Traveler’s Notebook every day. Focusing on our ourselves

CATHIE’S CHOICE

BIRTHDAY LAYOUT Cathie Allan, Stony Plain, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Impression Obsession stamps and dies, Embossable Window Plastic, Glitter Ritz glitter, StazOn and Tsukineko ink, Tombow markers, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L, unknown ribbon.

Summer is here and because of my spring-cleaning ritual I will be cruising into summer with some GREAT new ideas. Spring cleaning in my craft space is actually like a treasure hunt. I never know what I will find, and a couple weeks ago I struck gold. As I was sorting through a few of my boxes of old projects, cards, scrapbook pages, and altered cardstock, I came upon something that I had not done for a long time. I used to call them swing cards. A swing card has an element that “swings away” to reveal something underneath it. The moment my eyes laid on one of those old projects, I needed to play again.

I decided to take the idea to a whole new level. I love it when an idea leads to another idea. I applied this new evolution of the swing card to a birthday card for my grand-handsome son, Liam. We now have the “stacked swing card,” in which I stacked four tags, each revealing a new photo of Liam. The only issue was that the front panel was heavy. So, I designed a special tent card format that supports the weight of this very special front panel. This is how new card formats evolve. This wrap-around tent card base actually has a section that comes forward and tucks underneath the bottom tag, thus locking the tent card base in place so it stays erect.

The swing card/tag idea is a great element to add to your scrapbook page. Check out the matching scrapbook page I created, using similar techniques that I used to create the card. If you are looking for something extra special to create for your loved one or a cool embellishment for your scrapbook page that reveals a hidden message, journaling, or just another photo, this Cathie Choice idea just may be what you are looking for. Happy summer, everyone … may it be your swingiest!
