Hello, Division 30 South! I hope these past few months have been an extraordinary one for you all. We’ve reached half of our term already, and despite us initially being a bit worried about the pandemic, we’re all doing our best so far, and we’ve still managed to uphold our division values of service! I can’t wait to see what the rest of our term holds. Also, thank you to all of the Key Club editors who sent in these absolutely amazing articles for this edition! You may notice that this edition has a certain spooky Halloween theme to it, which is something I’ve been waiting to do ever since the beginning of the term! I hope you enjoy these visuals throughout the entirety of this newsletter! -- Tran Pham
What’s Poppin’ Suns? Happy October! I hope you all enjoyed our Self Care Service week last week, and remember to keep taking care of your mental health! If you’re feeling burnt out or drained because of the current circumstances we’re in, be sure to reach out to a friend or trusted adult! Anyways, upcoming this month will be Regional Training Conference on October 17th, which will be open to both members and officers! At each session, we’ll have 7-9 different workshops to choose from. We have officer training for those who are currently officers or seeking to become one, contest workshops for those who are trying to apply for Distinguished or International contests, workshops about mental health, staying motivated, and more! The Region 3 LTGs and I worked really hard on this event and although it won’t be hosted in person like last year’s, we hope that you’ll still get the chance to meet some new friends from other divisions and learn some new things! -- Jennifer Vo
Kiwanis Backpack Distribution By Timmy Bui | Oxford Key Club Yet again, our Kiwanis family asked us to help out with a supplies distribution for disadvantaged kids who are starting school, so we delivered. Six students from Oxford Academy came to help out with the proper mask protection. It was actually a fairly sunny morning, but that didn’t matter to us. We were enjoying our rare, precious moment at an in-person event, conversing about summer, school, and whatnot. In each backpack were notebooks, paper, and folders. Definitely reminds me of what I still need to get this fall semester! Who knew they were still necessary for virtual learning! Also in each backpack were papers with Kiwanis meeting details on them. Quite interesting, it appears like they’re instilling the Kiwanis spirit into these families early on, trying to recruit those kids at a young age!
Anaheim Vineyard Food Drive By Augustino Nguyen | Magnolia Key Club Throughout Summer, Vineyard Anaheim sponsored a Food drive that happened weekly on saturday at a local community center. This event was one of the few in-person events throughout quarantine and was very limited in spots. Even though not many members signed up, there were only 3 slots open for sign up in order to maintain 6 foot distancing. There was extra precaution with extra face masks and gloves available to volunteers. At this event, our members were able to volunteer at different stations ranging from picking up food, directing traffic, to loading food in cars. Each of us was distributed to different stations, and I was able to load food into people’s cars and was able to see the happiness that was caused from volunteering. The other members had chances pushing grocery carts to fill with food and directing traffic so that things went smoothly. The event lasts around 2-3 hours with a break in between for water and snacks. At the event, over 100 families are usually served each weekend. It is a great feeling being able to volunteer at in-person events again and give back to the community. Even though only there were not that many events for members to go it was a good experience for those who went and volunteered.
Animal Crossing Week By Thien Transqu | Kennedy Key Club From the beginning of August to the 8th, JFK’s Key Club participated in the Animal Crossing Service Week. The service week was created by Andrea Kang and I to celebrate the release of Animal Crossing New Horizons. Also, we wanted to do a video game theme because there is a more chance of the Suns participating when it involves something with a new video game. This service week is very special to me because it was my first service week I’ve worked on since my term. At first, my partner and I trouble finding a theme because there are so many themes out there that can help contribute towards making a service project special. We alas thought of Animal Crossing because we
Back To School Donation Drive Kateleen Torres| Loara Key Club
My favorite event of the month was the Back to School Drive. Our inspiration to make this event was going to Starbucks and seeing a little basket and a flier asking for donations. It was technically the first in person event we had since the beginning of quarantine. Members had to go to their local Starbucks and donate back to school items. Since it is back to school season, kids in Anaheim are in need of school supplies (the less fortunate ones)- so we thought it would be a good idea to join in on this event. Personally, I donated 5 notebooks since those are a staple for any grade level. I hope we can do more charitable events this school year, it is awesome to be able to give back to our community any way we can. It was nice to see a lot more items in the bin later that week.
Paper Crane Social
By Anna Nguyen | Cypress Key Club Cypress has held a couple socials every month throughout the past few months in quarantine, but the paper crane one we had in August is one of my favorite ones I’ve joined. Playing FreeRice, BeanBeanBean and Freekibble over Google Meets every month with my home club is fun, don’t get me wrong, but those questions can get repetitive and old real quick. The paper crane social was super fun because we all had to learn how to make paper cranes together at the start, I guess it all slipped our minds how to make them again. Throughout the social I got to talk to my fellow board members and catch up with a few of our members. I think it’s always great getting to know our members, especially our fresh/ sophomore class because they’re our next “generation.” We played music, talked about everything on our minds all while struggling to simply make a few paper cranes. At the end we all were able to make a couple in all different colors, shapes, and sizes. Socials are my favorite types of key club events because it’s just an amazing feeling talking to your friends or making new ones while doing something fun together. Cypress hs socials have definitely become my favorite stuck in quarantine key club events!
All Paws On Deck
By Nicholas Dinh | Western Key Club All Paws on Deck was a service project developed by Western High School Key Club to create fun and enjoyable toys for our dogs along with other dogs to play with. This event focused on using at home materials such as bottles, socks, t-shirts, and tennis balls as a way to create DIY toys while at home. A video linked to the flyer that gave volunteers reference to the types of toys they could create for their furry friend. All of the submissions were due by August 31 at 11:59 PM. Volunteers had a number of products they could of created. From tug a war shirt ropes, bottles filled with pop kernel, and even even tennis ball toys that dogs can chew on. Having this amount of variety make sure that dogs can choose from a catalog. All of these DIY products were doable and easy to follow to which made it ten times better. For my experience, I personally loved this event since in the beginning if this year we got ourselves a dog. Never did I really have a passion at first but now knowing I can first hand see the joy, it fills me with so much glee seeing the light in her eyes. Luckily for those who don’t have a dog, they still can volunteer by donating these to the chosen dog shelter. Nonetheless, it was a happy day for everyone.
Pause For By Sean Peralta | Savanna Key Club During this warm month of August, Savanna Keyclubbers took some time off of their phones in order to help out their communities through the app, “Pause For.” Pause For is an app that allows you to contribute to a cause such as planting trees and providing meals for families in need. All you have to do is pause the use of your phone for a set amount of time. Although when I first used the app, I was scared that I was going to miss an important message in the hour I paused my phone. However, thanks to the help of my fellow members who did it along with me, I felt confident that I could last an hour without my phone. Eventually, I forgot about my phone for the rest of the day and I felt more aware of the things around me. It’s amazing how putting your phone down for an hour or two can change the way you view your day. When I finished my pause, I felt very accomplished at myself and also very happy at the fact that I was also able to help someone in my community. Many other members also felt that way. Giang Ong, a sophomore at Savanna, said “I really love how it helps you stay focused on your work while also helping global causes. It not only benefits me when I use it, but also those who are in need of assistance so it’s a very good app in my opinion.” Along with the many other users of the app, I would agree with her opinion. Pause For has provided our members an unlimited amount of opportunities to work more effectively while also helping out another cause. By pausing for an hour, you could provide one meal for a person in need. One hour could also provide a vaccination for a newborn puppy or plant a new tree. This app has helped me realize that how we spend our time is very important and that rather than continuing to scroll mindlessly on my phone, I could pause for an hour, do something more productive and contribute to a cause. This is why Pause For is truly a wonderful app. It allows you to continue supporting your community while helping better yourself and becoming more mindful of the world around you.
BACK TO SCHOOL SOCIAL By Tiffany Ong | Oxford Key Club Since we’re going back to school soon, OAKC had a Back to School Social with Whitney and Savanna. It was a really great opportunity to bond with other Key Clubbers that I have never really talked to before. :) The social was held on Zoom, and there were around 60 participants which was a great turnout! Before being put in breakout rooms, the Lovebox messages were read out loud, and I was super surprised that someone actually wrote me one. :)) It was really sweet and totally unexpected! After we were put in small breakout rooms of around 9 people, we played the UNICEF Math Games for Good Challenge, where we answered math questions to raise money to help children go to school. While answering the math questions, we also talked a bit about some random stuff. It was actually one of the only times I’ve had both my camera and mic on during the recent online events, so I was able to break out of my comfort zone during this social! After the math challenge, the people in my group decided to play skribbl.io because we couldn’t figure out how to use the Zoom whiteboard feature. We had a fun time, and some of the drawings were pretty funny too! Our breakout room ended before we could finish the entire game, but it’s okay because we continued to play afterwards :) Overall, the social was a really fun experience because I talked to people I’ve never talked to before and the activities were really entertaining too. Hopefully there will be more socials and events where we can play more games together!
