Killarney photographer front and centre of Presidential visit

Julien Behal from Woodlawn was front and centre of the action as he was the official photographer during the Irish leg of the Presidential visit.

The 46th President of the United States of America arrived to Belfast on Tuesday as part of the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

On Wednesday he travelled to Dublin Airport where he was greeted by family and friends of US Embassy staff at the Fire Station, by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD, Ambassador of the United States to Ireland H.E. Claire Cronin, and Ambassador of Ireland to the United States H.E. Geraldine Byrne Nason. But it was Julien who got the first glimpse as the president descended Air Force One.

Julien, who now lives in Dublin, runs Julien Behal Photography and regularly works for the Department of Foreign Affairs.

With a team of six they covered the three-day visit to Ireland with Julien covering the airport and then sorting through thousands of images taken by the photographers each day before sending them to world media agencies such as Reuters.

And it's not his first time photographing Biden as Julien was hired as the official photographer during his visit to Ireland in 2015 when he was Vice President.

"It's such an honour, a good privilege to be asked," Julien told the Killarney Advertiser this week.

"I was at the airport on an elevated stand

and it was lashing. It was just like the movies. They come off the back of the plane and they all stand in different directions around the plane. Then there's a big motorcade. It's blink and you miss it."

Next Julien was in the fire station where the US President greeted waiting guests. "I got very close to him, I could have

put my hand out and touched him, but I wouldn't have done that."

In March 2020 Julien's company got the Royal seal of approval when it was also chosen as the only agency to officially photograph the Royal visit and were subsequently distributed to Sky News, the BBC, ITV and other news outlets.

A Killarney photographer was one of the first in the country to capture American President Joe Biden as he stepped onto Irish soil on Wednesday afternoon.

AWARD: Glen Bowler took second place at Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year 2023 competition at the Fresh International Film Festival.

Killarney filmmaker takes second place in national competition

A young Killarney filmmaker narrowly missed out on winning Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year 2023 competition at Fresh International Film Festival.

Glen Bowler (16), took second place in the competition which was announced on RTÉ on Wednesday night.

The St Brendan’s College Transition Year student’s film ‘The Legend of Patrick Greenwood’ was one of many award recipients at the Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year which were broadcast on national television this week.

The film, which is about a retired soldier turned gardener who considers what legacy he will leave behind, was filmed on location in Killarney National Park. While the crew behind the short film

Major new sporting development to be launched in Gneeveguilla

A major new development involving three clubs in the Gneeveguilla area will be unveiled at a special meeting in the village tonight (Friday).

Gneeveguilla Basketball Club, Gneeveguilla Athletic Club and Gneeveguilla Community Council are launching a three-way project that will result in a new basketball hall and running track being built in the East Kerry village.

Planning permission was recently granted for the project. Tonight’s meeting in the Gneeveguilla GAA Clubhouse at 8.30pm is the first step in a major fundraising drive - and drawings of the new project will be unveiled.

“This is a huge project and we need all the support we can get,” Mary O’Leary, one of the organisers, said.

“We hope all can come along to the information meeting and support this wonderful new development which will hugely benefit our community.”

knew the result of the national competition for nearly two weeks they were sworn to secrecy until the awards ceremony was broadcast on television.

“It was a long-kept secret but it was very exciting to finally see the film on television,” Glen told the Killarney Advertiser.

“My phone has not stopped with messages of congratulations.”

Glen is not the only Kerry award winner as 18-year-old Malachaí Ó Ciardhubháin from Dingle won Best Screenplay for his Irish language short ‘Nellie’ while Killarney’s Rachel Griffin saw her film shortlisted as a nominee for Best Art Direction.

Council refuse planning in time of housing crisis

Local councillor Maura Healy-Rae has hit out against Kerry County Council after the local authority refused planning for 12 houses in Faha.

The Council said a housing estate of this scale was inappropriate in such a rural location and that it “contravenes the

Kerry County Development Plan". Woodlands Equestrian Club and Showgrounds hoped to build 12 houses on the site adjacent to their horse riding facility.

Cllr Healy-Rae and her father Danny Healy-Rae made representations on behalf of the builder to Kerry County Council’s planning department as they felt there is a need for new house builds in Kerry.

“This area has significant residential development already, a local pub, restaurant, GAA pitch and an equestrian centre, welding iron workshop and a shop which is to reopen shortly,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.

“In the County Development Plan that we operate under at the present time, it has now become crystal clear that only farmer's sons or daughters will be considered for planning now in any part

of the county. Many young people are excluded from buying or building their own houses and the only place they can buy a house now is within Killarney town costing between €500,000 and €600,000. It was proposed that these houses in Faha would be sold for €240,000 approximately.”

Kerry County Council declined to comment on the matter when contacted by the Killarney Advertiser this week.

New creative hub to bring film industry together Killarney father calls for Cystic Fibrosis support

“I have three wonderful sons, who all happen to have CF," Tim said.

David Coffey Wheatley from Killarney set up Kingdom Studios which he dreams will become a bustling creative hub where people in the industry can work on films together.

This new voluntary service he feels will help people boost their own CVs in the field they specialise in such as acting, directing, hair and make-up, editing etc.

"I just want to help as many people as possible when it comes to films in Ireland and this will be a start," David, who was part of the 2021 Olivia Colman film 'Joyride' in the stag do scene, told the Killarney Advertiser.

David has also made a few short independent films via D&R Productions including 'The Mob'. He also writes a lot of the scripts for D&R including 'Spin on Reality' in 2020 and 'The Mob 2' in 2021.

"I've always felt there needs to be something to help small creative minds in Kerry. We all know it's a struggle to get into that industry of acting and so on, so I felt we definitely needed something in this day and age. I've spoken to several people over the years that have said this. I took it upon myself to do it. I had the idea two years ago because when we had D&R Productions I was being intro-

duced to new people around Kerry that are into acting and movies. The whole idea is the creative hub is a place where people in different fields can come and work together. Everyone will be getting experience from it in the field they are in so the actors that get brought on to help the scriptwriters will get more acting experience and so on."

A Killarney father of three boys - who were all born with Cystic Fibrosis - is calling on the public to donate to the 65 Roses Day today (Friday).

Tim O'Donoghue says the access to vital CF services is what helps them to lead a full and healthy life.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited chronic disease that primarily affects the lungs and the digestive system. Ireland has the highest incidence of CF in the world and some of the most severe types. There are more than 1,400 people living with CF in Ireland and the number is increasing each year as a result of improvements in treatment and care.

Today volunteers will be out in force collecting for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s annual fundraising day. It is called 65 Roses Day as it derives its name from the way in which young children often first say the words "Cystic Fibrosis".

Funds raised on 65 Roses Day will help to provide exercise equipment, counselling sessions and grants for people with CF undergoing a transplant or fertility assessment, or for families with CF who have recently been bereaved. Funds also go to support Cystic Fibrosis research and the building of new CF hospital facilities and the funding of specialist CF staff.

"We have always worked hard as a family to keep the lads healthy and keep them on track with their treatment. The eldest is 21 now and while there have been challenging times over the years, we have found that it isn’t just family support that is needed, but access to facilities, grants and services that can help the lads live their best life. That is why I am supporting 65 Roses Day this year, to call on people to donate and help CFI continue to provide these vital supports, which I, for one, am very glad to have availed of.”

Radio stations have been playing ‘Breathe Easy’ sung by Stephanie Rainey in the lead up to today's fundraiser. All royalties earned from every radio play are being donated to Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. ‘Breathe Easy’ is an original song written by professional songwriter Myles Gaffney in memory of his late-niece Ciara O’Gorman, who died from Cystic Fibrosis complications in 2017 aged 24, 12 days after giving birth to her son, Rocco.

To support Cystic Fibrosis Ireland on 65 Roses Day today (Friday), donate online at 65roses.ie or buy a purple rose in Dunnes Stores or other participating outlets nationwide. People can also donate to the ‘Breathe Easy’ 65 Roses Day fundraiser on Just Giving at www.justgiving. com/fundraising/BreatheEasySong.

Marie Meets

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

Smiles all round as Deenagh Lodge Tea Rooms reopens

The sun and the buzz of the Bank Holiday weekend brought many visitors to the National Park where The Deenagh Lodge Tea Rooms just reopened for the tourist season.

Proudly supporting Down Syndrome

Kerry, they also support local, where I enjoyed a delicious Killarney coffee and homemade apple pie.

I put in a call to Catherine Doyle who I know gives her time generously to Down Syndrome Kerry and the operation of the Deenagh Lodge Tea Rooms.

On a well deserved school break, Catherine put me in touch with Ann Ladden (Family Liaison Coordinator) and Norma Doherty (Tea Rooms Manager). The ladies gave me the run down on operations before I had the pleasure of meeting employees James Doyle and Ann Marie Ladden.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE DEENAGH LODGE TEA ROOMS?

"The main aim here at the Deenagh Lodge is to set up training for our young Down Syndrome adults who are 18+ years, to eventually move out into mainstream work in their communities. There are approx 30 Down Syndrome adults employed at the lodge where they are all paid, working two to four hour shifts where we are now open seven days per week from 9am to 5pm. It is a fantastic facility providing a welcoming environment where they can interact with customers and gain confidence in safe surroundings. The social aspect of dealing with people is hugely important. This year there will

be a Instructional Coach on board, hands on in reaching that goal of employment for our Down Syndrome adults, whose parents travel to The Deenagh Lodge Tea Rooms from as far as Listowel, Causeway, Limerick and Cork," Norma explained.

WHAT'S ON THE MENU?

"We are fortunate to be supported hugely by the community of Killarney, tourists arriving off the horse and carts as well as tour groups in the evenings. All our produce here at the Lodge is home baked. We have hot and cold drinks, toasties, sandwiches, an array of cakes, ice cream and snacks. It's a welcome stop for dogs and their owners to rehydrate after a run or walk in the Park. Norma is a fantastic

manager. She and the staff worked hard through COVID and they are the creators of the great atmosphere that is Deenagh Lodge Tea Rooms. Together with Norma and her team, the OPW work hard in making it the only facility of its kind in Kerry.

HELLO JAMES DOYLE...

"I am James from Beaufort and I've been working here for five years. Some days I do two hour shifts but mostly four hour shifts. My favourite thing is the wash up, meeting people, I love carrying trays and thankfully there have been no catastrophes so far! I am lucky to have great strength to carry the trays because I go to Owen Browne for personal training at his

gym 'Farm Athletic' in Beaufort," James said.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB JAMES?

I attended MTU in Tralee and I spent four years on the Skills4Life course there. I think if I was to pick any job in the world, I would love to go back there to work in one of their offices one day. That would be the dream."

HELLO ANN MARIE LADDEN....

"I am Ann Marie from Castlemaine and my parents bring me to work most days. I am the same as James, I work two to four hour shifts every week. My favourite thing is making new friends here in Killarney and I love to chat to the customers. I get on well with everyone here so it has given me confidence and experience that I can do it!" Anne Marie explained.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB ANN MARIE? I THINK YOU'D MAKE A FANTASTIC MODEL!

"Do you think so? Maybe I would like to be a model one day, but my dream is to become a classroom assistant. I would really love that to help people every day. The young adults at The Deenagh Lodge Tea Rooms are paid directly by Down Syndrome Kerry. Like every young person, they love the independence of spending and learning the value of their own money. Their tips go directly to Down Syndrome Kerry where they are pooled for needed services. The artwork that hangs in the Lodge is the creation of Betty Rohan who sells her work donating a percentage to Down Syndrome Kerry. There is also a beautiful painting at the Lodge by popular local artist Phil O'Grady, currently being raffled where all the proceeds will go to Down Syndrome Kerry.

Housing refugees costing allied tourism industry €1.1bn

The reliance by the Government on tourism beds to house refugees and asylum seekers could cost the tourism economy

€1.1bn this year.

Paul Kelly, Chief Executive Fáilte Ireland was speaking to a Joint Oireachtas Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media just before the Easter Break when he made the claims. The Fáilte Ireland official told the meeting that 32% of all registered tourism bed stock outside Dublin is now contracted to the State and is not available to tourists. This will have a negative effect on downstream activity providers, visitor attractions and many in impacted areas will have their business survival put at significant risk, according to Mr Kelly. “We estimate that this will cost the non-accommodation tourism sectors over €1.1billion in lost revenues this year. This will be a real loss as we know

from inbound agents that many visitors who want to come to Ireland are now booking other countries simply because they cannot find accommodation in Ireland,” he told the meeting. The news comes as the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY) confirmed that one of three hotels in the Killarney area previously used to home International Protection Applicants has resumed trading as a tourist business. Hotel Killarney is one of four premises nationwide that has returned to its traditional business model – the other three are in Dublin - the DCEDIY confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser. There are two other unnamed hotels in Killarney providing accommodation for applicants of International Protection, they added.

CONCERNS: There are concerns that the lack of bad space could have a negative impact on allied tourism trades like gift shops, tour operators and attractions.

Over €3k donated to Turkey appeal

Over €3,000 from local donations has been given to help those left devastated after the Turkish earthquakes.

Turkish barber Michael Kaya based in High St had pleaded for funds to help people devastated by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake rebuild their lives after 41,000 people died while millions more lost their homes.

It was the biggest earthquake Turkey has experienced in over 200 years and 10 cities were affected.

Thanks to Michael's quick action he organised a full truck load of essential aid donated by the people of Killarney.

Michael, who is from Kuşadası and who been living in Killarney for 19 years, put a call out for donations and was overwhelmed by the response, especially as he says there has been more devastation since as floods have destroyed the area.

"It's still bad," Michael told the Killarney Advertiser.

"There has been big floods and lots of rain there since the earthquakes. 13 million have been affected in total. Thank you everyone for your kind donations. We collected €3,440 which has been sent to Erdal Guntas, a volunteer worker on the ground in Turkey who has helped 120 families daily with groceries and hygiene products. We're grateful to everyone who donated."

The aim is to provide adults with an opportunity to gain skills and the experience of cycling as a group on the open road in a safe and enjoyable environment.

Experienced cycling club members will accompany beginners on the weekly cycles extending the distance gradually from 20km the first evening to 70km after seven nights.

“If you are interested in developing your cycling but don’t feel ready to turn up on a Sunday morning for the club weekly spins this is an excellent opportunity to get started,” said organiser Fiona O’Donoghue.

“One of the many advantages of cycling is that it is far easier to increase distance than in some other sports. Anyone finishing the programme will be well on the way to cycling the Ring of Kerry and all the other charity events organised throughout the year."

One of the evenings will include a maintenance and basic repair skills demonstration to help anticipate potential bike problems and decrease risk.

Participants will need a roadworthy bike, helmet, a drink, front and rear lights, a spare tube and an eagerness to have a go. The programme will begin at 6.45pm from outside St Oliver’s National School on Thursday next (April 20) and more details are available from Fiona on 085 7897725.

Young rugby club members shine in Florida tournament

Several members of Killarney Rugby Club’s underage team enjoyed the trip of a lifetime over the Easter weekend.

Five players were selected to take part in a Rugby 7s tournament in Florida after US-based academy Hawkeyes spotted them in action in Killarney last summer. The Tropical 7s is one of the biggest underage rugby tournaments in the United States.

Players are selected from all over the world to form teams in their own underage bracket before the competitive element in Tampa over the Easter weekend. Local players were selected after impressing Hawkeyes officials last year. Beaufort girl Clodagh Foley played in the Under 18s competition and her team won the plate competition.

Listry’s Emjay Leslie and Beaufort’s Luke O'Malley both played in the Under 14 boys competition.

The Under 16 girls competition was cocoached by Killarney Rugby Club’s underage trainers Diarmuid O’Malley and Josh Whelan.

They managed a team of girls from all over the world, including Fia Whelan and

Ava O’Malley who played with Fijians and Western Samoans and this international selection on the Under 16 competition outright.

“What was so interesting about this group is that the girls just met for trials on the Wednesday before the tournament and gelled immediately. The standard of rugby they played was off the charts but more important they all learned so much from the experience and have now formed friendships which will last a lifetime,” said O’Malley. “Played in the searing Florida heat, the players acquitted themselves very well in the international tournament."

The trip was made possible thanks to support from the following businesses, Killarney Brewery, Tim Jones Butchers, Cromane Foot Clinic, Heavenly Touch Therapies, Jacks Restaurant Cromane, Four Star Pizza, Kerry Woolen Mills, Great Southern Killarney, Plaza Hotel, Café du Parc, Yoga by Jo, Alan Devane Fitness, Aghadoe Heights Hotel, Milltown Dental Practice, Meadowlands Hotel Tralee and Be Pro Therapy.

Hundreds support Kerry Hospice Walks

Over 700 registered walkers turned out to support the annual 5k and 10k Kerry Hospice Good Friday Walks.

It's a long held annual tradition around Muckross in memory of two amazing Killarney ladies, Sheila (Mac) Kelliher and Vivien O'Shea.

Athletic Ambassador Sarah Leahy cut the ribbon and the walks began at 10.30am.

"It was a great testament to two wonder-

ful ladies to see people turn out in their hundreds. There were many that didn't register but made donations also whom we are most grateful to. There was a great atmosphere amongst the family and friends of Sheila and Vivien and the weather played ball giving us sunshine and a cool breeze which was ideal for walking," Cathal Walshe said.

Over €70k funding for festivals and community groups

The future of some of Killarney’s biggest festivals are secure after receiving €70,000 funding under the Community Support Fund.

A total of 26 groups and projects in the wider Killarney area are set to receive funding. The biggest project was Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce which will get €25,000.

The Wander Wild Festival is in line for €10,000, a total of €8,000 has been allocated to the Christmas in Killarney Festival, and the 4th July Festival will get €4,000.

These are just some of the local organisations and clubs in the area that received funding.

The hugely important role played by annual festivals in generating visitor num-

bers and boosting the profile of Killarney has been stressed by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.

The Chamber said the financial support will help to ensure the events can prosper and grow and continue to provide a great entertainment outlet for local people as well as visitors.

Joint Chamber President, Pádraig Treacy, thanked the officials and elected members of Kerry County Council for recognising the role the annual festivals have to play and for their ongoing support which is greatly appreciated.

“Working together, Kerry County Council and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, together with other agencies

involved and the dozens of dedicated volunteers, can ensure that Killarney continues to be a great town to visit, a great town to do business in and a great town to live in,” he said.

“Our festivals are hugely popular and, in addition to attracting so many people, they greatly enhance Killarney’s reputation as a quality place to spend time in,” Mr Treacy said.

Kerry County Council managed the allocation. A total of €750,000 in funding support was granted to community groups and projects across the county. The fund, which is in its ninth year, has now supported 1,974 projects since 2015 to the value of €6.256m.

Councillors in the five Municipal Districts met last week to decide on the allocations and unanimously welcomed the provision of support to the recipients.

Keith's perfectly timed photo is a winner

He might have waited patiently for two hours but it was well worth it for amateur photographer Keith Johnson. His image of a bird in flight trying to catch a fish won the most recent Water/Reflections theme Killarney Camera Club competition.

28 images were submitted in total. The top three in each category are as follows:

Novice category:

1st Place: Katie Angland, Gougane Barra Reflection

2nd Place: Trish Scully, Reflections at Dundag

3rd Place: Klaudia Topór, Water Reflection

Unrestricted category:

1st Place: Keith Johnson, Water Reflections

2nd Place: Conor Healy, The Jersey

3rd Place: Paul Garnett, Buttermere Reflections

Keith gave the following insight into his winning image.

“I used my Canon 5D with a 200mm lens, a 5.6 aperture, 1250 shutter speed and 400 ISO. I was just about close

enough to get the shot, and I probably spent over two hours waiting to get the bird in the frame. I first pre-focused an area where I hoped the bird would be. I took numerous quick shots in succession and this one worked best. I am happy with the result. It's sharp with a good reflection which was what I was aiming for.”

The next presentation is online on April 20 on the Zoom platform by landscape photographer Ruth Grindrod. Anyone interested in joining the camera club can email secretary@killarneycameraclub.ie.

52-year-old veil makes special wedding appearance

March 23, 2023 was a very special date for Louise Daly and Niall Woulfe as the couple sealed their love in front of family and friends in St Mary's Cathedral.

The couple have known each other for 10 years and been a couple for five. They got engaged in the summer of 2020 and were delighted to welcome guests to their special day followed by a reception in the Killarney Oaks Hotel. Both are duty managers in local hotels; Louise in Hotel Killarney and Niall in The Killarney Court.

Louise grew up in Pinewood where the couple reside now and Niall is originally from Donerail in Cork.

"We got engaged just after the first lockdown lifted in a cave in Dingle on June 19, 2020," Louise, daughter of Joe and Teresa Daly who now live in Faha, told the Killarney Advertiser.

Louise explained that she met Niall, son of Geraldine Duane (France) and Patrick Woulfe (Mallow) in The Gleneagle Ballroom 10 years ago and they stayed friends before becoming a couple five years ago.

"Our first date was in Courtney's Bar." Maid of Honour was Laura Daly who is sister of the bride, while bridesmaids were friends Meadbh McSweeney, Aoife McCarthy, Rachel O'Sullivan and Stephanie Maher.

Best Man was Ciaran Lynch, the couple's best friend. Groomsmen were Ian

Deery, Jack Woulfe, Darren Roche and Jordon Quilligan, the groom's friends. Flowergirls were Violet Sheehan (4), Kayla O'Carroll (6), Amelia O'Carroll (2) and Inés Dubois (4).

Guests included both Louise and Niall's grandmothers Nora O'Carroll and Nora Woulfe as well many who travelled from France, England and all over Ireland.

Louise wore her grandmother's 52-year-old wedding veil for her "something old" which added a very special touch to the day.

"It was a surprise for her. It is old embroidered lace. I wanted something old and short. I was the first granddaughter to wear it but took it off soon after."

After their 2pm wedding the weather went against them so local photographer Dylan Clifford brought them to Killarney Railway Station.

Afterwards they enjoyed a reception in the Killarney Oaks Hotel. Later, Louise who plays saxophone with the Gleneagle Concert Band, joined her wedding band The Pearls and played two songs alongside them.

"It was brilliant, it was good fun in fairness."

Easter at the Killarney Outlet Centre

Sunday was an egg-citing day for the little ones as they got to meet the Easter Bunny during a family fun day in the Killarney Outlet Centre.

Organisers had a super line-up of activities from 2pm to 5pm including the arrival of the Easter Bunny.

The free party included a super magic show, balloon modelling, face painting and a fun children’s disco. There was a candle making workshop with expert guidance on how to make your own personalised candle and a bouncy castle, fun and games courtesy of A Time to Party.

Sam Bolger best of Kerry riders in Rás Mumhan

Killarney Cycling Club’s Sam Bolger was the best placed Kerry rider in the four-day Kerry Group Rás Mumhan over the Easter weekend.

Kerry’s only international cycle race attracted the top competitors from around the country as well as a number of very strong teams from the UK. Fast aggressive racing was on the cards for all four stages which produced for excellent spectating and a race title that came down to single-digit seconds on the final day in the iconic Killorglin Town circuit stage.

Killarney Cycle Club hosted the second stage which started from St Oliver's School Ballycasheen, and finished in Sneem via a processionary roll out through Main Street and High Street and an ascent of the challenging Ballaghisheen Climb.

“The club had two teams of five in this year's race,” said club secretary Niamh Sheehan.

“Throughout the Easter weekend, the team experienced some highs along with its share of bad luck. Sam Bolger rode aggressively for the four days which saw him take home the Liam Brick Memorial Shield for the best Kerry rider, and also finish second in the A2 Classification. The club also had Shane Spellman and Ewan Buckley chasing the A3 classification and both were unlucky to narrowly miss out on taking home the jersey on the final day.”

Frank Doherty, Mark McGlynn and Lorcan Daly were the other local riders

Local riders Richard Maes and David Culloty competed in this year’s race for Team All Human - VeloRevolution and both rode well to protect their team

leader - last year's Rás Tailteann winner Daire Feeley, as well as finishing inside the top third of the General Classification.

Benny Cassidy also took part in the Rás Mumhan with Blarney Cycling Club and finished the weekend strong inside the top 100.

Opus’96 Choir to raise the roof

The choir have enjoyed performing annually at Muckross House for their Christmas celebrations for the past 26 years. Now they show a different style of programme in St John’s Church, Castle Street, Tralee where they'll be celebrating over 400 years of glorious music by William Byrd and Beethoven. The choir will be accompanied by Kenmare pianist and teacher, Bogumila Sokirko.

"We have four of our choir members from Killarney, so they would be well known in the community," Martina Ryan Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. Byrd's work which they'll perform is his Mass for Four Voices - a must-sing work for any choir, she explained.

"2020 was the year in which we should have celebrated Beethoven’s 250th an-

niversary, but COVID took care of that, so now we are delighted to perform some of his most beautiful pieces arranged for choir.

"It is an enormous task for any choir to get back singing after the silence for the dreaded COVID years! This choir have worked so hard to achieve this."

Special guests include Joel, Sheridan and Briana Reid who will play some beautiful pieces on string and piano.

"Joel is a very accomplished string teacher in Kerry, and his two daughters are superb string and piano players. We look forward very much to hearing their beautiful Beethoven pieces."

Biden to visit cathedral built by great-great-great grandfather

President Joe Biden’s trip to Ireland will draw to a close today (Friday) in a Ballina cathedral built by his great-great-great-grandfather.

It's part of a four day visit to the island of Ireland.

Since his arrival on Belfast on Tuesday night he has met with senior politicians on both sides of the border.

He gave a keynote speech at the University of Ulster on Wednesday morning where he reiterated his support of the Good Friday Agreement.

This week marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the agreement and Biden’s sole reason to visit Ireland.

“I think the President feels very strongly that there is benefit, both here as well as in the United States, to mark the anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

He is here two days after the 25th anniversary of that and, I think, feels it’s important to send a powerful signal of support by the United States for the progress that’s been made, the sustained support going ahead,” a White House spokesperson said. Yesterday (Thursday), President Biden attended a number of political engagements in Dublin.

He started by meeting with President Michael D Higgins who he previously met on his visits in 2016 as Vice President, and in 2017 when he came in a personal capacity.

Afterwards he participated in a tree planting ceremony and the ringing of the Peace Bell.

Following that ceremony, he met with the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, who he hosted last month in Washington for St Patrick’s Day.

The President addressed a joint session of the Dáil and Senate, where he spoke about the strong ties between the United States and Ireland, as well as the deep and enduring historical, cultural, political, and economic ties between both countries.

Last night (Thursday) he attended a

World's richest become the poorest

An Indian artist has taken the world's richest and turned them into some of the poorest - by using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

It may be a controversial technology but artist Gokul Pillai, who used AI-programme 'Midjourney', images went viral online. It depicted a reimagined Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezosof amongst others without their their lavish lifestyles.

The images took about two days to create using the software and Photoshop, and Pillai says he took some inspiration from the Hollywood movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

"It was very coincidental," he told the Daily Mail.

banquet dinner hosted by the Taoiseach at Dublin Castle.

Today (Friday) he will visit Knock Shrine and the North Mayo Heritage Centre.

“The trip will then culminate with a speech in front of St Muredach’s Cathedral in Ballina, which is the very cathedral where, in 1828, President Biden’s great-great-great-grandfather Edward Blewitt’s bricks were used to construct 12 pillars that support the nave,” the spokesperson added.

"The movie is set in the slums of India and I wanted to recreate something based on that. The word ‘millionaire’ in the movie title and juxtapositioning it with actual billionaires, that’s how it started."

Pillai has more than 36,000 followers on Instagram and added that he was ‘completely overwhelmed with the response’. "I knew it would be funny and few might find it hilarious too but the response I received was unprecedented!"

When asked which AI image was the most popular, he said, "Probably Bill Gates. It’s hard to say".

Limerick firefighters save US TV host's home

The childhood home of a Bloomberg TV presenter was saved by Limerick Firefighters this week.

New York-based anchor Vonnie Quinn who grew up in Limerick and moved to the States in 2004 was devastated to learn that her family home had gone up in flames following an alleged arson attack.

“Immeasurable gratitude to Limerick, Shannon, and Cappamore firefighters for saving our childhood home after an

hours-long effort," she tweeted afterwards.

Firefighters from the city arrived to the scene on the Ennis Road within two minutes last week. They spent over four hours there and also brought the fire at two adjoining buildings under control.

“Fought a well developed fire in a roof in two semi-detached properties," Limerick Fire and Rescue Service said.

“Given the limited access around the properties to use an aerial appliance, crews fought the fire from several fire

service ladders."

A man in his 40s was charged by Gardai in connection with the fire and appeared before Ennis District Court.

Vonnie joined Bloomberg in 2006 after the completion of her studies at Columbia University, where she earned an MA and MS in Journalism. Now internationally recognised, she has been awarded the ABC Frank Reynolds Fellowship, a French Government medal, a Swiss Government Scholarship, and a National University of Ireland Travelling Studentship.

Volunteer doctor to take on Ring of Kerry Cycle

A Wicklow-based doctor will take on the Ring of Kerry charity cycle this summer to raise funds for CRITICAL, the emergency medical response charity.

Dr Mark Ruddy is the newest addition to the organisation’s team of volunteer responders. The charity that formally provided the Community Air Ambulance in the Southwest of Ireland now delivers pre-hospital emergency care to critically ill and injured patients in their local communities.

It now has volunteers in Mayo, Donegal, Dublin and Wicklow and will soon have volunteer doctors in Meath, Kildare, Waterford and North Cork.

Tralee nominated for Best Kept Towns Competition

Tralee has been nominated to participate in the Ireland’s Best Kept Towns Competition for 2023.

The town, which had another impressive result in this year’s Tidy Towns Competition, is an entrant in the Best Kept Large Urban Centre category.

Adjudication will take place during the month of May and the results will be announced at an awards ceremony in Dublin in June.

The judging criteria is similar to what is used for the SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition each year.

“The announcement that Tralee has been

nominated to participate in Ireland’s Best Kept Towns Competition is a further endorsement of the incredible work being done locally and is recognition of what has been achieved in recent years,” Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, said.

“There is fantastic collaboration between the local Tidy Towns team, staff of the Municipal District, local businesses and the community generally. This competition will be keenly contested with our town taking part in the Best Kept Large Urban Space category and I hope everyone will get behind the effort to secure yet another important honour for the town.”

Bid to bring Euro 2028 finals to Ireland

A bid to jointly host the Euro 2028 football finals has been lodged by the five football associations in Ireland and Britain.

This week the Irish Government agreed to support the submission of a final bid by the Football Association of Ireland for the co-hosting of the tournament with the Irish Football Association, the Scottish Football Association, the Welsh Football Association and the Football Association.

Hosting the tournament here will present a wonderful opportunity to showcase Ireland and our world-class tourism offering to Europe and the wider

world. It’s also a great opportunity for both North-South and East-West cooperation on a project that will mean so much to communities across Ireland and the UK.

“I am happy that the Government has agreed to support the Ireland and UK joint bid for UEFA Euro 2028. This tournament represents a huge opportunity for Ireland to welcome Europe and the world to our shores, to display our world-class facilities and to host an event that benefits all. It is also an opportunity to ensure long-lasting benefits for League of Ireland, local and youth football,” said An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar.

CRITICAL has been chosen as one of the official beneficiaries for the 2023 Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. The 170km event takes place July 1 starting and ending in Killarney.

Dr Mark Ruddy works as a GP in Arklow and has a strong background in pre-hospital emergency medicine. He qualified as a doctor in 2010 and has worked in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Dr Ruddy previously worked for the Royal Flying Doctors Service and LifeFlight in Australia as well as Essex and Herts Air Ambulance in the UK. He still travels to the UK and covers two or three shifts each month with Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance in Lincoln.

Dr Ruddy is available to respond to incidents and emergencies after hours and during his commute between North Wicklow and Arklow. He will be tasked by the National Ambulance Service and his vehicle and equipment is provided by CRITICAL but funded by events like the Ring of Kerry.

“I’m delighted to volunteer my time with CRITICAL. I developed my critical care skills in Ireland, Australia and the UK over the last decade and this is a way of sharing my expertise with my neighbours in Wicklow should they ever need it. I will be called to time-critical emergencies like cardiac arrests and skill-critical incidents like serious crashes. I can start the patient’s intensive care journey at the side of the road in Wicklow if necessary. The funds raised during the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle will help CRITICAL to expand into more communities across Ireland. The equipment we use is expensive and only really found in an Emergency Department, so effectively we’re bringing the hospital to the patient,” said Dr Ruddy.

It costs an average of €25,000 to establish an advanced level volunteer doctor in the community; and €120,000 to put a new Critical Care response vehicle on the road.

To register for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in aid of CRITICAL visit www. ringofkerrycycle.ie/our-charities/critical-emergency-medical-response/.

But now a peace has settled with the country nearly united – only Lord Uhtred of Bebbanburg, ruling over Northumbria, is yet to pledge his land to the throne. But when King Edward dies the peace is threatened as his two potential heirs, Aethelstan and Aelfweard, battle to claim the crown. When Uhtred hears

that Aethelstan – once his ward and protégé - is to fight, he rides to help him secure victory, but the young prince has fallen under a dark influence and is not the same boy Uhtred once knew. And when Aethelstan’s actions threatens the life Uhtred has known, Uhtred must decide where his loyalties lie – with the king, or with his homeland.

The Raines 'Reverie'

Galway-based folk Americana group, The Raines, have released their eagerly awaited debut album 'Reverie'. The album showcases the band's deep connection, unique blend of musical styles and features a collection of captivating songs.

The Raines, comprised of Ruth Dillon, Yvonne Tiernan and Juliana Erkkonen, have been making waves in the music scene with their last five singles going to No.1 in the iTunes charts.

“My warmest feeling about working on ‘Reverie’ is the beautiful musical union and friendship built between myself, Yvonne and Juliana," Ruth said. "We

worked hard to bring an album that is full of connection, textured and melodic but that would also honour our own individual voices and styles.” 'Reverie' is set to be a standout album in the folk Americana genre, a reflection of female sensitivity, intuition, sincerity and inspiration and showcases the distinct musical style and skill of The Raines.

Award-winning Producer Brian Masterson, famous for his work with The Chieftains, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson and The Bothy Band to name just a few, mixed and mastered the album.

40 cars for classic club’s Easter Monday run

Nearly 40 cars participated in the Killarney Valley’s Classic and Vintage Club Easter Monday charity road run.

The club is based at the Kerry Mental Health Association's facility on Lewis Road and funds from Monday’s run will go to the local charity to help with the upkeep of the facility.

The wide variety of cars included a rare DKW, a pristine Volkswagen Beetle, several versions of the newer Golf and a collection of Toyota Celica sportscars.

The drivers followed a route to Sneem via Moll’s Gap which included a photo stop and Ladies View.

The Sneem Hotel hosted the lunch halt before a final stop off in Kilgarvan where the drivers went their separate ways.

“We are delighted with the turnout,” said Paul O’Shea, who organised the event on behalf of Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club.

Monday’s road run was the club’s second event in as many weeks. The previous weekend they organised a tractor run for the same charity.

Rally of the Lakes to be launched on Sunday

Killarney and District Motor Club will launch the Assess Ireland International Rally of the Lakes at the Gleneagle Hotel on Saturday, April 22.

The 42nd running of the biggest rally in Kerry will take place on April 29 and 30. So far over 220 crews have entered, setting an all-time record for the event and beyond doubt proving the rally’s popularity. Along with a high volume of entries, there is strong representation across all the categories, including the Juniors and Historics who will run separately from the main field, allowing for an extra 50 cars to take part in the event.

The club plans to have over 200 cars at the start line trying to ensure that all who have entered will be able to enjoy the iconic stages.

Rally fans can expect an action-packed weekend, beginning with the now-traditional ceremonial start on Main Street on Friday night (April 28).

The rally returns to the Beara Peninsula on Saturday for the first time since 2019 and the route will include the favourites like Cod’s Head, Ardgroom and the Healy Pass.

Sunday’s route also features some new roads, and after two runs over Moll’s Gap and Ballaghbeama the rally heads to east Kerry.

The sting in the tail includes two runs over Gortnagane and a stage that has not been used for rallying since the 1983 Circuit of Ireland – the last time the famed five-day event visited Kerry.

“We will have a couple of special announcements regarding the town centre at the launch,” said Clerk of the Course Dermot Healy.

With entries set to close on Friday, April 14, the club will be in a position to reveal some of the big names that will tackle the rally in just over two weeks’ time. New for 2023 is title sponsors Assess Ireland - front runners when it comes to providing automotive and engineering inspection services. It provides a nationwide service through its network of engineers.

Established in 1999, Assess Ireland currently employs a team of more than 80

highly skilled people throughout Ireland including engineers, finance, customer support and logistics teams. With headquarters based in Tralee, the firm has been undoubtedly a longstanding supporter of the local economy. Assess Ireland offers a range of motor services to the corporate insurance sector as well as providing engineering/ work equipment inspections to a wide range of businesses both locally and nationally.

“Give our involvement in the automotive and engineering sectors, the sponsorship of the Rally of the Lakes is an ideal event for our company to be associated with.

“We are delighted to be supporting one of the most famous annual motorsport events.

“It is our intention to continue as the main sponsor for a minimum of three years.” Conor Deasy, Managing Director of Assess Ireland, said.

The launch is scheduled for Saturday afternoon (April 22) at 5pm.

Local drivers, including Muckross man, defending champion and recent Circuit of Ireland Rally winner Noel O’Sullivan will be on hand to answer queries about the rally.

The launch is open to the public and all are welcome to attend and hear about the 2023 rally.

FINANCIAL ADVISOR DIRECTORY FOR KILLARNEY

A handful of winners

There seems to be a narrative in the market suggesting that stocks typically go up over time, and therefore, with a little homework 'my stock picks' will go up even more - but it isn't that simple. This isn't a 50/50-coin toss.

The concentration of winners is more severe than you think.

The Russell 3000 Index has returned an average annualised return of 13% since 1980, but the disparity of returns that generate these profits is rarely focused on.

The vast majority of the positive returns over time can be attributed to just 7% of stocks - the 'mega winners'.

In a similar report studying the historical performance of the S&P 500, only 22% of the stocks in the S&P 500 outperformed the index from 2000 to 2020. Over that measurement period, the S&P 500 gained 322%, while the median stock rose by just 63%.

Put simply, the probability of picking a

winner is lower than you think, but all is not lost. A couple of big winners are all you need.

A FEW GOOD DECISIONS

Warren Buffett - arguably the most successful investor in history, recently attributed his success to just 'a dozen truly good decisions'.

"Over the years, I have made many mistakes - our satisfactory results have been the product of about a dozen truly good decisions — that would be about one every five years. "

That's right, the best investor in history made one good decision every five years. So how can someone who claims this be heralded as an investment guru?

ASYMMETRY

A stock can only drop by 100%, but there's no technical limit to how high a stock can go, so when you invest in some truly great companies, the handful of winners can more than offset the graveyard of losses you accumulate along the way.

Let's take one of Buffet's most notorious

investments as an example;

Over a period of seven years ending in 1994, Buffett accumulated 400 million shares of Coca-Cola at a total cost of $1.3 billion. As of the end of 2022, that position was worth $25 billion. And let's not forget the $704 million in annual dividends.

For me, stocks like TTD and Nvidia have more than offset some very questionable investment decisions. (24-year-old me has a lot to answer for, but you live and learn, I guess).

Obviously, the goal is only to pick winners, but on the off-chance you can't perfectly predict the future, here's a good place to start:

1. Stop trying to jump on every opportunity. Focus on making a few good decisions and give them time to work in your favour.

2. Don't be fooled into thinking every investment will be a winner. You won't stick it out very long if you expect to be in the green 24/7. There will be guaranteed losses along the way, but over time, a handful of big winners is all you need. The RSA motor business in the UK represents about £120 million of annual premium but the 'Insurance Times' reported that the RSA’s private motor segment was operating at a loss, meaning the lost

premium does not represent an operating loss to the business.

“When we completed the acquisition of RSA, we were clear that we would take necessary actions to drive sustainable outperformance in UK and Ireland," Charles Brindamour, CEO of the Intact Financial Corp, said. "[The] announcement represents a further step in delivering against our strategic roadmap to optimise our footprint around Personal Lines, Home and Pet, and our Commercial and Speciality lines businesses.”

Car premiums in the UK have increased

by 21.1% from February 2021 to February 2022. Market sources concluded that inflation and supply chain disruption are pushing up the costs insurers face in fixing and replacing vehicles. The average annual car insurance premium in the UK is £929 which rises considerably in London to £1,419.

At the time of writing, it has just been announced that RSA are also exiting commercial mini fleet insurance in the UK from June 1, 2023.

RSA have not made any comment on their Irish operations. In the Republic of Ireland, RSA Insurance offer car insurance products via Insurance Brokers and Bank of Ireland. RSA also own 123.ie. John Healy of Healy Insurances.

Home owners urged to pay Local Property Tax

Revenue has this week defended its system for the payment of the Local Property Tax (LPT) after a number of homeowners said they have paid but still received letters telling them they owed the tax.

150,000 letters have been issued by Revenue to property owners who haven't yet paid their Local Property Tax (LPT) or made an arrangement to pay.

Last November letters were issued to property owners who had paid last year’s property tax using a credit/ debit card or a single annual debit instruction to inform them of their liability for this year and advise of due dates for payment.

Revenue said over half of the 150,000 property owners who received these letters have already corrected their position by either paying the liability or putting a payment method in place. Under the legislation, all residential properties were required to set up their payment method by January 10 this year.

To date, over 1.7 million properties have payment arrangements in place for

Superbly located 3 bed semi-detached home situated on the edge of Killarney town just off Muckross Road.

Well maintained throughout, the property is not overlooked from the rear and represents a great opportunity to purchase a home in this strong residential area. Generous Private rear garden (not overlooked) with side access and concrete block built shed.

Ideal starter home or investment property.

2023, which includes 350,000 payments scheduled for March 21. The total take for LPT so far this year is €314 million.

While the large majority of property owners have met their payment obligations Revenue advise that those who haven't yet paid or set up a payment arrangement, leave themselves open to collection and enforcement action.

It is important to note that 2022 was the first year that newly liable properties came within the charge to LPT on an annual basis. The owners of properties built last year were required to submit a LPT return and set up a payment arrangement for 2023.

A spokesperson for Revenue has urged all property owners who haven't made arrangements to pay their LPT to take immediate action.

LPT payment method can be set up online at revenue.ie or contact the LPT Helpline at 01 738 36 26.

Gear up in aid of Ballyfinnane NS

Locals in Ballyfinnane are ready to gear up for their annual cycle taking place next week.

Due to the resounding success of the previous year’s cycle the ‘Tour de Ballyfinnane’ will take place on Saturday, April 22, at 10am.

This is the eight year of the cycle, which is organised by the Parents Association of Ballyfinnane National School, along with the support of the school staff, the wider local community and generously sponsored by local businesses in the area. All funds raised are in aid of Ballyfinane NS, a two-teacher school which is situated in the parish of Kiltallagh, at the crossroads near the well-known Shanty Bar. The cycle was a homegrown initiative started by the Parent’s Association of the school which has grown incrementally each year and has now become a regular outing on the calendar of cycle events that take place in Kerry.

Proceeds from the cycle greatly benefit the children of the school where past funds raised have supported projects such as a new playground, school IT devices, sport, swimming, yoga and music, to name a few.

This year’s cycle was launched by Brendan Griffin local TD and Junior Minister for Sport with Kingdom Warrior and Irish boxer Kevin Cronin at Divane’s Volkwagen showroom Castleisland who are a proud sponsor.

School Principal Catherine O’Shea thanked all involved in its organisation at the launch and commended the professionalism at how each year the event has

all about stamina in the final term of Leaving Cert!

been run. She noted the feedback from all cyclists involved at the finish line was fantastic.

"The energy from that makes it easy for us to continue with the event the following year again and build on it further," Catherine said.

Daniel O’Shea Chairperson of the Parent’s Association added that they are really looking forward to welcoming everybody to their annual cycle.

"Preparations are well under way for what should be another fantastic day out for everyone involved. It has been a hugely successful event over the years and we are sure this year will be no different. Pre-registration is now open on our website www.tourdeballyfinnane.ie."

ROUTES

The cycle has two routes; a 70km and a 45km, both commencing from Ballyfinnane Community Hall at 10am. Refreshments will be provided along the route and again at the finish with the now infamous complimentary BBQ and entertainment at The Shanty Bar, Ballyfinnane.

Route 1: 70km - €25. Route takes you west to Castlemaine, Inch, Annascaul, Gleann na nGealt, Camp, Tonevane, Caherleaheen, Farmer’s Bridge and over the final climb of the day at Garraun on the return to Ballyfinnane.

Route 2: 45km - €20. Route takes you east to Currans, Castleisland, Ballymac, Tralee and back to Ballyfinnane via the Killarney Road and Gortatlea. Participants can pre-register online or on the day from 8am. All proceeds will go to Ballyfinnane National School.

As you return to school for your final term your focus will certainly be on making the best use of your time in the countdown to the exams.

With just over seven weeks to the start of the exams on June 7, it is really important that you look after yourself, revise effectively and work on your exam technique. The year of the Leaving Certificate is often compared to a marathon, so pacing yourself at this stage is essential so that you conserve some energy for the exams themselves. It can be tempting to try to pack in as many hours as possible of study in the final weeks as you grapple with the feeling that you don’t have enough done. Push those thoughts to one side and be sensible in your approach. Just like any long distance runner, if you exert yourself, you will have a lot less energy to perform well in the exams. It is all about striking the right balance between revision, rest and relaxation. Emotions can vary for Leaving Cert students at this stage of the year. You may feel stressed, anxious, overwhelmed while also feeling excited about finishing up in school and moving on to the next stage. Whatever you are feeling is normal and you are not alone. If you need to, chat to family and friends and reach out to those who support you in school.

PLAN, PREPARE AND PRIORITISE

Approach this final term strategically. Plan ahead for each week. Make a list of exactly what you are going to revise for the week and draw up a daily priority list. At the end of each day tick off what you have achieved and plan for the next day. Review your mock exam papers and marking schemes. Prioritise the areas that need attention and fill in the gaps in your learning. At this stage it is essential that you practice lots of exam questions. Make sure you are clear on the layout of the paper in each subject, the breakdown of marks for each section and the time allocation for each question. When you are completing full exam questions, practice against the clock. Do your best to switch off all distractions particularly notifications on the phone and social media, so you can concentrate fully to maximise the use of your time. Study sessions work best in short bursts at this stage, just like a High Intensity Internal Training (HIIT) session. Keep revision sessions to 45 minutes and take quick breaks to get up and move around regularly. Prepare glance notes and Mind Maps which will be really helpful

Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore and a member of Kerry Branch of IGC. See www.mycareerplan.ie or follow @mycareerplan on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

in the days leading up to the exams. Always finish revision sessions by looking at an exam question on the topic. Using a break down as follows might help:

• Survey the key headings, sub-headings, key points, diagrams, tables, maps etc (5 mins)

• Read the important information carefully, take very brief notes if it helps, but don’t overdo it. Concentrate on learning the content (20 mins)

• Recall what you can by brainstorming what you can remember on a blank sheet of paper (5 mins)

• Review what you are unsure about and have a look at an exam question on the topic to see how confident you would be to attempt it. Then check out the solution and marking scheme (15 mins)

SELF-CARE IS KEY

Above all else, you need to take care of yourself in the lead up to the exams. Eat well and stay hydrated. Avoid too many caffeinated drinks. Get plenty of fresh air and exercise. Don’t study too late and always allow time to do whatever relaxes you after study – take the dog for a walk, listen to music, try some meditation/ mindfulness if it helps, watch Netflix for a short while. You know what works best for you. Keep things in perspective. The Leaving Cert attracts a lot of media attention every year, try to keep that hype at a distance and focus on staying on track with your own exam preparation. This year has been tough and tiring but you are almost there now so keep it going! Remember that whatever happens in the exams, you have lots of options and pathways open to you and a ‘study-free’ summer to look forward to!

Kerry hoping to end 32-year wait

High-flying Kingdom on brink of first Division 1 title since 1991

Kerry will be looking to cap a brilliant league campaign when they take on Galway in the Division 1 final on Saturday.

The Kingdom have been sensational so far this season, putting established teams like Meath and Dublin to the sword en route to a thoroughly deserved first-place finish. Their form is remarkable considering the fact that they are just back in the top flight following a number of difficult years in Division 2.

Victory over Galway in Croke Park will see them secure an impressive backto-back following that league final win

over Armagh 12 months ago, while also capturing the county’s first Division 1 title since 1991. There is another incentive to winning on Saturday: doing so will bring Kerry level with Cork as the most successful team in the competition’s 44year history. Cork currently have 12 Division 1 titles to their name while Kerry are sitting on 11.

Last year’s All-Ireland runners-up will have their work cut out against a strong Galway side who won five of their seven league games; the only teams they failed to beat were Meath, with whom

they drew, and Kerry, who defeated the Tribeswomen 3-11 to 0-17 in the final round.

“Galway have been building nicely,” Kerry captain Síofra O’Shea told reporters this week. “They’ve got their players back from Kilkerrin/Clonberne as well. They’re a great team. They have players who are fast and fit and they like to run the ball. It will be a challenge for us but we’ll be well prepared.”

O’Shea (21) has been in terrific form for Declan Quill and Darragh Long’s side and she will no doubt be an important figure

if Kerry are to prevail on the day. The AllStar quintet of Kayleigh Cronin, Aishling O’Connell, Cáit Lynch, Niamh Carmody and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh – fresh from their All-Star trip to Texas - will also play key roles.

The Division 1 final, which will throw in at 5pm, will be preceded by the Division 2 decider between Armagh and Laois, with this game fixed for 3pm. Both matches will be shown live on TG4.

Club 7s launched at Ladies View

Earlier this week the rugged terrain surrounding Killarney provided the stunning backdrop as Spa GAA launched the second edition of the Killarney Club 7s.

Kerry stars Paudie Clifford, Dara Moynihan and David Clifford were on hand at Ladies View to mark the announcement,

with local photographer Paudie Healy capturing this beautiful image of the players kitted out and ready for action. This year’s seven-a-side Gaelic football tournament for men and women will take place over the June Bank Holiday weekend with two days of sport and entertainment in store at the club’s home

grounds in Tullig. The first Killarney Club 7s in 2022 was hugely popular with all who participated and attended and organisers are busy putting together another cracking event.

Pro boxer Keogh to direct Killarney course

An intensive six-week course on the fundamentals of boxing will be held at the Peak Performance Academy in Killarney from next Tuesday, April 25.

The course, which is being directed by professional fighter Darragh Keogh, will teach participants various boxing techniques with an emphasis on building strength and fitness.

Keogh has gained great experience on the boxing circuit in Australia over the

past number of years. He has won several amateur titles and was crowned the Australian Gold Coast champion and North Queensland champion in 2018. He won an Australian Golden Glove Championship in 2019 and was an Australian Boxing Council Champion in 2021. He turned professional after this in July 2021 and has gone undefeated in his three fights to date, the most recent in November 2022 in a Queensland super welterweight title bout. Since his recent

return to Killarney he has signed up with Elite Sports Promotions and is expected to make his Irish professional debut later this year.

“Those completing the course should benefit from enhanced cardiovascular fitness; improved mental strength, agility and hand eye coordination; greater stress relief; and improved confidence and self-esteem,” Keogh said.

The course is open to males and females aged 18 and over at a cost of €50 per person. No previous experience is required.

Girls fly the green and gold flag in Milan

The Kerry U15 girls squad recently headed off to Italy to take part in the prestigious Yes Cup Tournament in Milan.

The girls, who were accompanied by manager Natasha O’Sullivan, U14 manager Siobhán Cushen, and coaches Caragh and Aisling Kelly, played four matches over three days in the Pero Sporting Centre. They came up against three professional or semi-professional Italian teams, namely ProSesto, Como Women and Inter Milan. The ties against ProSesto and Como Women ended in 1-1 draws (both Kerry goals were scored by Jocelyn Cushen of Park) and Kerry were defeated 2-0 by Inter Milan, the eventual champions.

Kerry then met Swiss side Ticino in the 5th/6th place playoff. The girls fought a tremendous physical battle but there was no joy at the final whistle. Never-

theless their performances were very impressive throughout, especially considering the high standard of opposition. The Kerry players enjoyed a wonderful Saturday afternoon as they visited Milan Cathedral and enjoyed a parade around the streets. As the only Irish team in the 120 team entrants, they sang the Irish national anthem with pride while waving their Kerry and Ireland flags. They even had time to spare for a bit of shopping afterwards.

All 18 girls togged out and played a massive part in what was a very well organised tournament. They did themselves, their families, clubs, county and country proud.

AROUND THE WORLD

| LeBron leads Lakers to the playoffs

It may be his 20th year in the NBA but LeBron James still has that X-factor. The decorated veteran had a big night as he carried the Los Angeles Lakers through to the NBA playoffs following a 108-102 overtime victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Play-In match.

The 38-year-old posted 30 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the Lakers’ dramatic comeback win.

Towards the end of a rollercoaster encounter, Minnesota had a six-minute drought which allowed the Lakers to take the lead with just 1.4 seconds left on the clock. The drama wasn’t finished yet, however. Mike Conley was fouled in the act of shooting by Anthony Davis with 0.1 seconds remaining and Conley held his nerve to drain all three free throws and force OT.

With James to the fore, the Lakers eventually came out on top to set up an appetising match-up with Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies in Round 1 of the playoffs.

| Bruins break NHL record for most wins

The Boston Bruins made National Hockey League history Sunday night when they secured a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

The win at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center was the Bruins’ 63rd of the sea-

son, breaking the NHL record for most wins in a single season.

On Saturday, the Bruins tied the 19951996 Detroit Red Wings and the 20182019 Tampa Bay Lightning for most wins after capturing their 62nd win. Their record now stands at 63-12-5 for the season. They have clinched the President’s Trophy and home-ice advantage in the playoffs.

| Foster saves the day for Wrexham

Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds says he will “never be the same again” after watching Wrexham AFC take a huge step towards promotion in dramatic fashion on Monday.

Reynolds watched from the stands with co-owner Rob McElhenney as the Welsh club beat National League title rivals Notts County 3-2 in a match billed as the biggest in the league’s history. It was a chaotic encounter between two clubs fighting for promotion and culminated in Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster saving a penalty in the last minute to ensure the Welsh club sealed a victory which moved it three points ahead of second-placed County at the top of the league having played one game fewer. Wrexham has four games of the regular season remaining to secure automatic promotion to the Football League. Only the league champion will be automatically promoted, with second place having to navigate a tricky playoff.

Kerry boys help New York to historic win

Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on New York’s first ever win in the Connacht Senior Football Championship

I should have believed him but it was too hard to comprehend that New York could capture a scalp on one of the home teams in the race for Sam.

Exactly one year ago I met Larry McCarthy and having discussed so many aspects of his post, including weighty matters pertaining to the GAA, I ignited the passion for a subject very dear to his heart: the GAA in New York.

I was interested to find out the state of the GAA in New York and no better man to give that insight.

The New York football position I knew had changed radically. No wonder. John Kerry (O’Donnell) was the guru of the GAA in New York for decade after decade. The Castlegregory native made it good in NY and never forgot his own, including Thady Fitzgerald, the barman for half a century in Gaelic Park in the Bronx.

The O’Donnell stranglehold on Gaelic Park ended as the New York Board took control. New York were always able to pull good hurling and football teams together and were a match for most Irish teams when they met in New York.

The searing sun of midsummer in the Big Apple and the small pitch and hard surface was used to full advantage by the home side. However, when it came to the All-Ireland championships, New York invariably failed.

During Covid they were very weakened

as the normal flow of students was halted due to travel restrictions. That, of course, is why the local clubs in Ireland did not suffer the usual summer exodus of student players during the pandemic.

HEART AND SOUL

Larry McCarthy, President of the GAA, is a native of Bishopstown in Cork. He has a sister living in Killarney and up until he was elected to the top job in the GAA in 2021, his heart and soul was in New York GAA.

A PE graduate of Thomond College, it was there he showed exceptional administrative skills in pulling together a college team. Student club teams are quite different to the regular club teams, with no age difference between the top table and the players.

The qualified PE teacher then emigrated to New York where he advanced his studies to PhD level at Ohio State University. He has lectured at the Stillman School of Business since 1998. He was hugely involved with the Sligo club in New York. (Carlow was the club steered to success by Eddie Tatler Sr when he lived and worked Stateside.)

When I put it to McCarthy that New York had no realistic chance of success to lift the Sam Maguire or the MacCarthy Cup, his message was succinct and clear.

58 14.04.2023
At the Bronx on Saturday night a team with Kerrymen to the forefront did what Larry McCarthy said they would do.

“We’re not far away, you know”. I didn’t believe him, but when I saw how close New York came in the Tailteann Cup, last year his words were came to mind again. He was one of the very proud New Yorkers at the famous GAA mecca in the Bronx on Saturday last when New York defeated Leitrim. The historic victory couldn’t have been more dramatic. It took a penalty shootout to decide the outcome.

It was all square at the end of normal time and still deadlocked on 15 points each AET. Then the whole drama of penalties and the immigrants won 2-0 in a welter of excitement. History was made: the first ever win by a New York football side in the Connacht Senior Football Championship.

EUPHORIA

I can just imagine the scenes of overwhelming joy and euphoric embraces when Mikey Brosnan scored the winning penalty. He is a fine player. I was very impressed with his father, Mike Brosnan Sr, in colleges games here in Kerry and in the 1988 county final when he starred for St Kieran’s as they won their one and only Kerry SFC title.

I had pencilled him in as the emerging Kerry senior full back, the natural successor to John O’Keeffe and Sean Walsh. Instead the troublesome number 3 geansaí fell to Tom Spillane, Liam Hartnett, Ambrose O’Donavan, Kieran Culhane, Tom Spillane again in 1991, Anthony Gleeson, Mike Hassett, and Barry O’Shea. Then in 2000 the play-well-anywhere Séamus Moynihan propelled Kerry to the All-Ireland by dominating his great college friend Pádraic Joyce.

For Brosnan, fate intervened after that 1988 county final. Job prospects were poor in his native Knocknagoshel so he departed for New York. The rest is history as Kerry struggled for 13 years to get a worthy successor to Johnno and Seánie. Back to the Bronx on Saturday night last and the team with Kerrymen to the forefront did what Larry McCarthy said they would do. Leitrim had no luck in the penalty shootout. Two shots were saved, and the woodwork deprived them of the other two goals.

No wonder Johnny McGeeney, the New York manager, savoured this remarkable win. Man of the Match was Gavin O’Brien, who is a big loss to Kerins O’Rahillys. Readers will recall that Mushy flew back to Ireland to play for his home team

on their journey to Croke Park for the All-Ireland Club final, where they came surprisingly close to Kilmacud Crokes, the eventual winners.

Another Kerryman, Rob Wharton, anchored the defence for New York. The Renard man won a minor All-Ireland with Kerry in 2014.

CONNACHT

Not so fortunate were the other team of exiles. London lost out to the ever-improving Sligo 2-20 to 0-12, who now progress the Connacht semi-final against New York. Pat Spillane Jr played a major part once more, scoring a fine goal. Proudest of all in attendance at the other Croke Park on 240 and Broadway on Saturday night last was McCarthy, a man who was so involved with the New York Board before he took the three-year sabbatical to fulfil his role as Uachtarán CLG. He promised to relocate to Ireland for the duration of his presidency, which he continues to do, but last weekend’s return to New York was extra special as he celebrated with the New York team.

He told me so a year ago and whatever happens from now in Connacht, the New York team has surprised so many, including myself. Arise Kocknagoshel and take your place among the nations of the earth.

The surprises did not end there. The league champions Mayo were beaten by Roscommon in their Connacht quarter-final tie. The Rossies took the game to hot favourites Mayo and defied the tough weather conditions to emerge as deserving winners. McStay’s honeymoon is over, but it may well be a blessing in disguise.

So, in Connacht you have Mayo, Galway, Sligo and New York in the mix. I expect Mayo to regroup and along with Galway they will have a big say on Sam’s abode for 2023.

I wasn’t too surprised that Clare won at home,

denting the hopes of the emerging Cork team energised by John Cleary’s management style. Cork are better than that but are well off the mark for final honours.

In Leinster, Dublin will canter, with only Louth offering any real opposition. How come Kildare and Meath (even under Colm O’Rourke) are so poor with the explosion of players at their disposal as so many Dubs migrate outside the Pale?

In Ulster, Derry will have to shore up their defence quickly after leaking all those goals to Dublin. Donegal County Board structures are in disarray so Armagh and Tyrone will fly the flag for Ulster, with Cavan that unlikely to overcome the challenges that lie ahead.

Meanwhile, back home, Kerry will soon begin their defence of the cup that brought cheer to the county and dispelled the darkness of winter 2022. They will run out at the Fitzgerald Stadium here in Killarney on Saturday next (April 22) for a 4pm match-up against Tipperary. Only one result is expected and, indeed, will be tolerated.

Killarney Athletic

SENIOR B: Killarney Athletic B 3-2 St Brendan’s Park B (Conor Collins, Darren O’Doherty, Aaron O’Sullivan). Our senior Bs came up against a youthful and spirited St Brendan’s Park B side in the last 8 of the Tommy Healy Cup. We got off to a great start when Conor Collins latched onto a pinpoint through ball and lashed the ball into the far side netting with a finish any forward would dream of. Darren O’Doherty got his head onto a loose ball from a corner to double our advantage before half time. We started the second half right where we left off when a Conor Collins corner was kept alive brilliantly by Armend Gashi, who knocked it into the path of Aaron O’Sullivan who finished it off to put us in firm control. Park Bs would not give up though as they took advantage of a slight Athletic mix-up from a set piece and found a way back into the game to make it 3-1. Shortly after, beautiful free kick scored over the wall from Park set up a very nervy final 20 minutes. With some great saves from Conor O’Riordan and dogged defending from David Naughton, James Suter, and two centre halves Cillian Hickey and Frank Cronin, our composed midfield of Jason O’Grady, Eoghan Lawlor and Darren O’Doherty helped the side get to the 90+ minutes at 3-2 with great help from all the boys off the bench. We now look forward to the semi-finals of the cup as a great season continues.

U16: The U16s had a good 4-0 win v Fenit in the cup and can now look forward to a quarter final against Kenmare. Overall, a good night’s work but still plenty of room for improvement.

U14 DIV 2: Killarney athletic 2-2 Castleisland (Mark Corkery, James O’Callaghan).

We started strong with a 3-0 lead with goals from Tristan Cryan and 2 from Darragh Curran. All the boys should be extremely proud of themselves and best wishes to the remaining 2 teams playing on Monday. U12 Premier Division - MEK Galaxy 3 Tralee Dynamos 0. Another great result by these boys. Goals from Shea Driver, Darragh Burke, and Gerry Moroney. U14 Division 2 - St Brendan's Park 6 MEK Galaxy 4 (HT 3-2). Goals: David O'Shea (2), Ivan O'Shea (2). MEK went into a two-goal lead and dominated play for the opening 15 minutes but conceded three before half-time, including a penalty. Scoring from set pieces, MEK finished strongly and deserved more from an entertaining game. MOTM Ivan O'Shea. U16 Division 1 - MEK Galaxy 1 Camp 0 (Ronan Bennett). Tough game, only 12 players, and unbelievable effort from all. Special mention to Diarmuid Quirke, Noah O’Shea and Ronan Bennett.

Dr Crokes GAA

SFL DIV 1: Dr. Crokes 1-17 Spa 1-12. We continued our winning streak in round 3 of the Senior Football League with a 5-point win over neighbours Spa in tough conditions on Saturday last. In a game of two half’s, which was largely dominated by the strong wind, we got off a great start, playing with the advantage of the wind. Half times score Dr. Crokes 0-12 Spa 0-04. Spa started the second half the stronger, playing with the advantage of the strong blowing wind. After just 3 minutes of play, Spa’s Cian Tobin tapped a high ball passed Bryan O’Shea in the Crokes goals. Spa continued to up the pressure in all areas of the pitch, playing some really physical football. Crokes continued to play patient football, regaining composure and controlling the game from here. Their patience was rewarded in the 29th minute of the second half when young Charlie Keating found the back of the Spa goal, giving us a comfortable 4-point lead with 1 minute of normal time to be played. Michael Potts kicked the last score of the game securing a 5-point win. Next up is Killarney Legion away on April 23.

Fossa GAA

COUNTY LEAGUE: Skellig Rangers 1-06 Fossa 0-12. Fossa retained their 100% record in Div. 3 of the Credit Union County League with a hard fought away win in brutal underfoot conditions in Portmagee on Saturday evening. Fossa selected to play with the strong wind and settled well after a few poor wides. Fossa were in control of the game, until a sloppy goal midway through the first half brought Skellig back into the game, Fossa regained composure and led at the break by 3 points, Skellig 1-02 Fossa 0-08. Fossa were under pressure in the

MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE FINAL: Div 2 - Tarbert 2-6 Kilcummin1-7. Played in Brosna on Monday evening both teams played their part in an entertaining game in difficult conditions. Kilcummin were on top throughout the first half and lead 1-4 to 1-1 at half time. Sean Doolan scored the goal after a brilliant pass by Luke Daly while Gavin Morrissey, Keelan O’Shea, Cian Forde and Sean Doolan were our point takers. That goal just on the stroke of half time and another one shortly after the break gave Tarbert the confidence and impetus and try as did we were unable to recover the control we had in the first half. Points by Keelan O’Shea Aaron Buckley and a beauty from Gavin Morrissey gave us a chance but, in the end, we came up short. This team have given great entertainment and pleasure over the league and have some very promising players. Well done to mentors Tommy Brosnan, Paul O’Donoghue, Kieran O’Donoghue and Dave Kearney for the work being done.
