It still is fabulous to be a woman in America. stomping the stigma around

MENtal Health

"Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of but stigma and bias shame us all." M E N TA L H E A LT H D O E S N ’ T D I S C R I M I N AT E . It has faces. A

powerful statement that shoulders stigma is men’s mental health. Men are expected to be strong, stoic, and provide. The pressure associated with “being the man of the family” makes it trickier to admit they are not okay. The preconceived male stereotype, combined with the portrayal of mental health as a weakness, is a recipe for disaster. Society correlates mental health with shame. This impacts how men seek professional help. The destructive generational cycle must end. We, as society, must Stomp the Stigma around mental health, especially for men, the military, and first responders. In 2021, 46 million Americans experienced mental illness – 1 in 4 adults. Men are less likely to seek professional help, with suicide being a leading cause of death. Men are 4x more likely to commit suicide. When are we, as a society, going to act and overcome this silent crisis? The shadows of men's mental health are cast in negative proportions for “men to be strong." True strength comes from being honest, vulnerable, and proactive. Being strong does not mean that there aren’t challenges. It is the ability to overcome - express emotions, maintain relationships, and utilize efficient coping strategies!

lakenormanw oman.com

The time is NOW to hold hard conversations, actively listen, and educate ourselves. Barriers can be removed so challenges that are unique to men are addressed. Most find it difficult to identify their feelings and don’t recognize when they are mentally unbalanced. Even when they sense “something isn’t right,” they mask it for fear of judgment or repercussions. Men are less likely to talk, becoming isolated and choosing harmful coping mechanisms – alcohol, drugs, or gambling. This creates lower self-esteem and places strain on relationships, which compounds depression. Men, especially within the military and first responders, have learned to “push things down” or avoid. It is “easier” (not healthier) to evade rather than work through. Six million men suffer from depression with 75 percent saying “I’m fine." Truthfully, they are scared, feeling helpless, and struggling. Have you noticed these personality and physical shifts within a man? • Aggressiveness & Irritability • Aches & Pains • Changes in Appetite • Chest Pain & Heart Rate • Digestive Issues • Frustration • Substance Abuse • Trouble Concentrating • Trouble Sleeping • Unusual Behaviors

Spouses, friends, and family notice changes in personality. Be honest - “You seem off lately, I am here however you need.” There are unknown variables as to how to start the conversation, yet honest admission is paramount. Most men claim to be "tough enough to fix it on their own" OR “therapy doesn’t work.” Healing takes perseverance, time, and effort. It may unlock painful memories that need attention, not denial. Healing is worth it! As you think of your loved ones OR yourself, know that mental illness has symptoms … very real and recognizable symptoms! It is not your job to “fix”; it is your job to be supportive through their healing process. It is their journey. The difficult part is breaking barriers, understanding the complexities, and offering non-judgmental support. Having the courage to ask for help is the ultimate strength. w LKN EXPERT

demon st rat ing ad mirat ion FOR THE MAN IN YOUR LIFE in our lives for one day! These annual celebrations may include cake, neckties, tools, kind words, dinners, cologne, or greeting cards. Men accept the sweet expressions of love with appreciation and gratitude, so why do we affirm the men in our lives only during Father's Day? I propose that we demonstrate a fondness for our loved ones all year. I N J U N E , W E C E L E B R AT E T H E R E M A R K A B L E M E N

My counseling work with couples has taught me that men and women usually crave many of the same things from their partners. We all want to be respected, loved, appreciated, desired, heard, safe, and supported. Unfortunately, these intimate expressions can decrease over time with the strains and stresses of life. The friction can distract us from the blessings of a meaningful partnership and cause us to focus on the negative attributes of our partners. Over time, life's challenges can chip away at the foundational needs of healthy relationships. Therefore, we must intentionally recognize and express what we admire and appreciate about the other. Being intentional does not require lavish gifts, expensive getaways, or huge celebrations. Instead, the smallest changes can have the most significant impact. Daily gestures of love and admiration are an effective method of demonstrating how much someone means to you.

Here are three ways to demonstrate admiration for the man in your life: LKN EXPERT

• Encourage him through words of affirmation. Words of affirmation are one of The Five Love Languages, which I believe is the most important. We can build one another up or tear one another down with one statement. Words are containers for power, and we must wield them carefully. Try not to say things mindlessly but speak from the heart. Point out attributes you value about him by affirming his worth and abilities. Communicate what he does well or thank him for the things that make you feel special.

lakenormanw oman.com

2

• Consider his requests and preferences. Usually, the men in our lives will tell us what they want, how they feel, or what makes them feel loved. The problem is we don't always listen. We may hear requests as complaints or think we know best, resulting in frustration. Try not to invalidate his feelings and needs. If the man in your life says, "I'd enjoy a weekend getaway with just the two of us." Rather than making excuses or telling him what you think and want, ask, "where would you like to go and what would you like to do?" Inquiring about their desires communicates that he is respected and heard, and his needs matter to you.

3

• Bless him and pray for him. It is so reassuring when we speak blessings over those we love. When you recognize he is stressed or facing a difficult task, take his hand or embrace him and bless him with your words. Use declarations such as, "I pray that the Lord gives you strength, courage, and wisdom to handle the challenges of the week…" or "I pray that God's blessings and favor would be with you always.” Such statements offer support and protection and demonstrate that he is not in the struggle alone. w

• Create Zones. Sports equipment, gardening, tools, car care—each activity gets its own cabinet or shelf so everyone knows where to find items and, more importantly, where to return them. You may have to enforce a new rule: “Put it back where you found it!” • Expand Your Pantry. No room for those Costco runs? Build a closed cabinet right by the doorway into your house where you can store extra nonperishables such as paper towels, water, and detergents.

• Use Wall Space Organizers. Not everything fits in a cabinet. You can find sleek wall tracks that come with various hooks to hold everything from bikes, to yard blowers, to ladders … a great way to keep larger items off the floor.

• Build a Workbench. Tools can be stored on an alternate wall above the bench for easy access, and it creates the perfect space to do those home improvement projects you don't want to do in the house. If you're an avid gardener, a workbench is a must-have. Fertilizers and the like can be stored in an overhead or locked cabinet where little hands can't access them.

• Use Custom Flooring. With the variety of custom flooring available these days, it’s easy to make your garage feel like another room in your home. For example, the Flextile system is impervious to many chemicals and oils and has a micro-grid system that allows small debris to drop through the track to the cement floor—the tiles stay clean, and the debris below can easily be cleaned using a leaf blower. w

ost of us have an idea of what it means to be successful, and that concept typically includes working hard and reaching goals. For Michael Holdenrid, Partner and Executive Vice President with Leavitt Elite Insurance Advisors and Leavitt Elite Wealth Management, success is built on a personal philosophy of service and mission–and begins at home. “I think success starts at home,” Michael relays. “I know a lot of men who will read a stack of books on business success but never one on being a good spouse or a good dad. It takes time and commitment.” Michael and his wife, Meredyth, met shortly after he graduated from UNCCharlotte. The couple has two boys, Braden and Caleb, and will celebrate 18 years of marriage in September. “I love the family my wife Meredyth and I have built,” Michael says. “We have an amazing relationship, and I can’t begin to tell you how much I love our kids and the time we get to spend together. That’s the most important thing to me. Professionally I would just say that my work doesn’t feel like work. I really enjoy my career and the opportunity to serve clients and help lead our team every day. It’s a blessing!” For Michael, a love of numbers and statistics began early. “I’ve always had a love of numbers which started with analyzing baseball statistics as a kid,” Michael shares. “This attracted me to investments and capital markets which I explored in college. After college I started my career as a portfolio manager with Wachovia/Wells Fargo, where I had the opportunity of investing client assets into stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. This past August I celebrated my 20th year as an investment manager.” Michael has surrounded himself with a solid support system, starting with family and extending to his church family and community. About seven years ago, he started a bible study with a group of guys who meet every Tuesday morning and talk about their home life, faith, work, and the struggles that they have. “It’s priceless to get insight and guidance from likeminded people that I trust and who want me to become the best version of myself,” he smiles.

PARTNER & EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, GRIFFIN INSURANCE/ LEAVITT GROUP

MICHAEL HOLDENRID

One of Michael's guiding principles is laid out in a scripture verse from Apostle Peter: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” … “It’s a great reminder for me,” Michael says, “that we all have been given specific talents and we should use them each day. I feel called to serve people and that’s what motivates me. I keep an 'I get to' perspective versus an 'I have to' attitude. It keeps me humble and grateful for what each day brings.” w *Leavitt Elite Insurance Advisors operates under DBAs Griffin Insurance Agency and Holdenrid Insurance Group. WRITER

Upon graduating, the school asked him to join their teaching staff, so he taught a senior anatomy and physiology class for the next three years. During that time, he opened a private practice at a chiropractic office in the University area. “That’s when I started working with the UNCC Athletic Department,” Bob shares. “Leslie and I then opened Lkn Massage in Davidson in 2004 (Leslie is a professional and skilled massage therapist as well) at which time I went to work with the Davidson College Athletic Department. From 2010-2015 Lkn Massage expanded into a 2,000 squarefoot clinic that employed 15 massage therapists. Since then, I’ve gone back in private practice and have worked from home for the past five years. Bob’s creative side emerges in his woodworking skills and life as a musician. While Bob has been interested in carving wood sculptures since he was a kid, it wasn’t until 1995 when he saw someone demonstrating how a scroll saw worked that he truly became hooked on the craft and all its artistry. “I am considered an Advanced Scroll Saw Artist,” Bob explains. “I hand cut pictures and portraits in wood, make fretwork clocks, and I particularly enjoy making games and heirloom wooden toys.” The other artistic outlet for Bob is his music. Having played drums pretty much his entire life (professionally at one point), he has always been in one band or another. He now joyfully shares the stage with his kids in their musically talented group called the Townley Road Band. “It features my son Zach on guitar and vocals and Leslie’s son Aaron on bass and vocals. My daughter Sarah will also come up and sing a couple of songs occasionally. I really enjoy playing in a band with my children … it’s priceless!” w

That’s not too surprising for a man born and raised in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Although he dreamed of a career in professional tennis (there’s that passion again!), dentistry also grabbed hold of him in middleschool … and it didn’t let go. His twice-yearly dentist visits – plus trips to

The Huntersville native was working for a large finance company when a friend called him one day and said the words that changed his life: “I bet you’d be great at real estate.” Those words stayed with him. “I’ve always loved meeting new people and connecting with them on a personal level, so I decided to give it a shot,” he says. Even though Josh wasn’t sure what to expect when he started a new career, he says his healthy love of competition gives him the motivation he needs to be the best at what he does. “Just knowing there is someone out there working harder than I am fires me up and keeps me hungry,” he smiles. “I didn’t get in this business to be number two. It’s easy to stay motivated because I love people so much. I can’t wait to meet the next family we get to help.” Hard work and a commitment to families come easy to Josh. He studied at Montreat College and UNC Charlotte, and now lives and thrives in Cornelius with his wife and business partner, Charlene, and three massive fur babies: Lincoln, Oakleigh, and Gracie Blu. “I’ve lived here my whole life and have no plans on leaving! We are regulars at our favorite locally owned restaurants in the area. We love supporting our community.” He also loves taking in his favorite sport – baseball. And now that summer is just around the corner, game time is almost here. “I love everything about baseball,” he says. “I grew up playing it, watching it, and traveling to different ballparks with my father.”

Though his basement apartment in Queens was a little far away from his family in New Jersey—and despite the fact that the bone-deep exhaustion of a medical internship made a social life difficult—Dr. Patel found not only companionship, but love, right under his own roof. “My landlord had a very friendly, down-to-earth, gorgeous daughter,” he explains. “And that amazing person became my lifelong friend and wife.” Inspired by healthcare providers on the front line, be it a natural disaster such as Hurricane Katrina or a viral outbreak, Dr. Patel wanted to enter a field of medicine in which he could make a positive impact on the quality of life of his patients. In particular, it was the special patient-doctor relationship that encouraged him to specialize in oncology and hematology. As a physician at Southern Oncology Specialists, Dr. Patel is keenly aware that upon hearing a diagnosis of cancer, patients face a multitude of issues in addition to their diagnosis, such as fear, pain, and financial hardship. He takes very seriously his role in helping them navigate those concerns. “It is my honor to help patients through their challenges,” he says. “Caring for cancer patients has been the most rewarding experience in my life.”

rowing up in Gujarat, India, Poras Patel was fascinated by science. But it wasn’t until his grandmother was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer that he knew with certainty he wanted to become a physician.

Because of the determination and sacrifices of his parents, Poras was encouraged to strive high and work hard. He attended Rutgers University in New Jersey for his undergraduate degree and completed his residency in internal medicine and a

As a healthcare professional, Dr. Patel also knows that in order to help others enhance the quality of their lives he must also take care of himself. That’s why he chose to make Lake Norman his home, where he and his wife could enjoy kayaking, hiking, biking, and just taking in what he refers to as “the beautiful vibes” of the area. In addition, Dr. Patel helps those most in need by serving as a volunteer physician with the Medical Reserve Corps, a citywide emergency preparedness program. In being such a devoted advocate of strength and hope to all his patients, Dr. Patel is living proof that if you do what makes you happy, success will follow. w WRITER

here are a lot of things about life that John McKeown loves but being a father, he says, has been the greatest adventure of them all. “My wife and kids,” John smiles, “are definitely my biggest blessing. I love spending time with my family. We love saltwater fishing, traveling, and pretty much anything outdoors. We have family in Australia, Europe, and South Africa and have been fortunate enough to see a lot of the world. My wife and I lived in St. Thomas USVI for a year, but our favorite locale would have to be the Florida Keys … it is hard to beat the fishing, fresh seafood, and crystal-clear waters.” No stranger to temperate zones, John grew up in Tampa, Florida, and attended the University of Miami. He moved to North Carolina shortly after college and met his wife, Christy, a North Carolina native. They have two children, Lila (11) and John Christian (10). Shifting gears to the business side of life, John shares his interpretation of a “9-5” that doesn’t feel like work. “I always wanted to have ownership in a business,” he says. “It seems every job/career I have had was successful based on making people happy and providing more value than the money they were spending. When the opportunity arose to partner with Spray-Net, I could not turn it down! The results from our patented coatings and process are pretty incredible … there really is not another company out there that does what we do. I love the satisfaction that comes from helping people fall in love with their homes all over again.”

Spray-Net’s process has been featured on HGTV and is a U.S. patent holder. Quick to point out their uniqueness—from their four-part pressure wash to preparation, application, and clean-up— John says customers can expect a brand-new looking home free from brush strokes and roller marks of traditional painting … and a 15-year warranty. “We’re excited to help customers find a high-quality and costeffective way to transform and update their homes,” he continues. “While our process and product are unique, what drives us most is the smiles on our customers’ faces. We want to give the absolute best home renovation experience on the planet, every time, with no less than 100 percent customer satisfaction.” w

hen Dr. DiOrio was a young boy, he wrote down 100 things he wanted to accomplish in his life. They were youthful and ambitious goals that included dunking a basketball, swimming in all five of the Earth’s oceans, and visiting all seven continents. Somewhat less detailed but much more important was becoming a doctor and being a great father! Dr. DiOrio points out, “My brother Mark is also a doctor, and he inspired me to think that a doctorate was an attainable pursuit. Briefly, I thought about being a veterinarian. I even worked with Jack Hannah at The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and a local veterinary hospital in my hometown. But I didn’t want to mix my love for animals with my passion for medicine, so I found my calling in taking care of people. This calling changed for me when my father had cancer during my high school and college years.” Dr. DiOrio went into medicine to help others and make a more significant impact not only on his community at large but also on the individual people within his community. “I did not want to be the kind of doctor who was unapproachable nor aloof,” he smiles. “Instead, I want to be the type of doctor who is intent on listening, resolved toward making patients know that I care. I take great pride in sitting with patients, listening, sharing, and seeking to understand their worries and concerns.” Caring is at the core of how Dr. DiOrio impacts patients daily. And this is the foundation of what his practice, Physician’s Plan Weight Loss + Wellness, does as well. “I set out to fundamentally change a patient’s life through health and wellness. If we do one thing best, it is that we genuinely care! We do healthcare better because of that promise to care for patients as if they are my family.” Born and bred in Ohio, Dr. DiOrio has found his home in Lake Norman. The father of two impressive daughters, Bria and Kendal, his pride is evident when he speaks of them. “Kendal is 18 and Bria is 20,” he grins. “Bria is studying pharmacy at the University of South Carolina, and Kendal is going into public health. “I am so very proud to be their father!” With a passion for providing compassionate, authentic, and sympathetic care, Dr. DiOrio believes that being a physician does not have to be about illness, disease, or trauma. Despite being trained initially in emergency and trauma medicine, he is more passionate about his patients living well and being healthy. “Physicians are trained to treat disease and illness,” he explains, “even though we may best serve our patients by learning to identify, provide, and maintain their health and wellness. Physician’s Plan Weight Loss + Wellness originated from this vision and it’s our prime mission!” w

LKN men going against your fundamental beliefs or virtues—is much less appealing. No one knows that better than Brian Echevarria, candidate* for District 73 North Carolina House of Representatives. In fact, you could describe Brian as “uncompromising”: He’s a man who sticks to his principles, period. A husband, father, Christian, financial advisor, and business owner, Brian believes that the affordable and family-centered way of life he and his wife, Cynthia, moved to the Tarheel State for in 2006, is slowly slipping away. “North Carolina is a great place to live,” asserts Brian. “But policies put in place over the last decades are eroding our way of life. Every policy touches the home, and those policies need to change if we want the bright future that our children deserve.”

Brian believes that together with the people of Cabarrus County, he can ensure that brighter future comes to fruition. The policies he’d like to see put in place include a zero income tax, school choice, capping property taxes, removing regulations that hinder businesses, voter ID, funding the police, term limits, and a parents bill of rights. As far as the economy goes, Brian is a “free market” kind of guy, embracing wholeheartedly less government and more personal freedoms. “I want to keep more of the money that my constituents earn in their homes where it belongs and I want to help our businesses flourish,” he stresses. Inspired by his love for his own family, Brian is determined to never stop fighting for the families and communities that make up Cabarrus County. “My story is my family. And I am passionate about preserving the values that made this community a dynamic, vibrant, safe, and ideal place where my family—and all families—can thrive and prosper.” Those values aren’t something he’ll ever compromise on—there’s just too much at stake. “I’m just the guy next door,” he explains. “I love God, I love my family, I love my community, and I work hard to protect what I love. I won’t pretend to be anything else…I’m Brian and that’s ok with me!” w

MIKE SWEENEY CO-OWNER, BRAINWISE SOLUTIONS

"W

ith awareness, comes choice” – and subsequently intentionality to all that we do. These wise words from Eckhart Tolle struck a chord with Mike Sweeney, co-owner of BrainWise Solutions in Mooresville, and he incorporates those insights into all that he does. “Once a person knows the benefits or dangers of an action or mindset,” Mike says, “they are responsible and cannot blame anyone else for the outcome. Personal responsibility is indispensable in forging successful relationships and businesses.” Mike grew up in a small town called Sheridan at the base of the Big Horn mountains in Wyoming. He met his wife Stacy in the fifth grade; however, they did not start dating until college. Married for more than 28 years now, they have seen their share of parenting hurdles—from a serious health issue to adoption challenges.

30

“Stacy and I have raised eight children,” he explains. “We had triplets ( Janika, Ellison, and Kael) who are now 24. We then adopted Layne who we loved as a foster baby from 14 days old; she is now 16 and a junior in high school. Four years later, we adopted 5-year-old Gavin from Ethiopia, and he is now 18 and headed to Liberty University in the fall. We then adopted a sibling group from Ethiopia (Micah, Leah, and Hallie) who are now 24, 23, and 19.”

that we could lose one of our precious jewels,” Mike painfully recalls, “totally changed my perspective on life. The night we were given this news, even though I was already married and a father, I truly became a Man.”

Mike graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and later served as a logistics officer in the Navy. When their son Kael was born, they discovered he had a coarctation of his aorta that required surgery. At that time, he was the smallest infant that the children’s hospital in San Diego had operated on, weighing in at only 3 pounds. “The stark realization

BrainWise Solutions was born in response to the medical journey they have experienced … forever searching for effective cognitive solutions for children. “We have witnessed the amazing results of neurofeedback and hyperbarics first in our own kids and then in ourselves,” he continues. “Our goal was and is to bring healing

modalities to as many people as possible at affordable pricing.” With a strong faith, Mike and Stacy put their trust in Christ and it has seen them through the valleys. “A servant leadership mindset,” Mike says, “is the most important quality for success in both life and business. A servant leader seeks to empower and praise others. Through humility, servant leaders do not seek out glory for themselves but delight in seeing others reach their potential. My success in life and business, aside from God’s blessings, has come at the hands of seeking to serve others first.” w WRITER

released a song that only he can write. Titled “A Lot to Drink About,” you wouldn’t have to alter the lyrics much to match today’s world: “There’s the price of oil, The war of the spoils,

Here’s your bucket for the big bailout, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan,

We’ve got a lot to drink about.”

While drinking doesn’t solve our problems, ACTION does and in today’s uncertain and hightech world, keeping your business in front of your audience can be a daunting task. Nevertheless, it is a very important one. In fact, experts agree that combining print and digital in your marketing is a much more effective strategy than using either one alone. But that can get tricky when you consider ROI and getting tangible, traceable results from

lakenormanw oman.com

your advertising dollars. Well, fear not! There are some creative ways to get your message to the right people at the right time at the right price! With inflation hitting a 41-year high just a few weeks ago, it may be time to rethink your business and marketing strategies. Programmatics advertising is a techy definition but in layman’s terms it’s the ability to place a client’s ad on any customer’s device at any time.

As we like to say here at Lake Norman Woman Magazine, “Fish Where the Fish Are” and that is exactly what programmatics does. It allows you to target users on a granular level. With access to incredible amounts of data, we can directly and specifically target your viewers. This means you’re using your ad budget smarter, eliminating waste on people who are unlikely to be interested in your product. w

In order to help you stay current and proactive in your business, here are a few more facts about programmatics advertising: Specific Targeting Capabilities: With programmatics, we have the ability to deliver your ad to prospects who we know with certainty (through their behaviors such as keyword searches, website visits, location, and interests) are already interested in your product or service. Site Retargeting: This targets users who have already visited your site while they are visiting other sites across the web. Site retargeting is a highly effective method of converting site visitors into purchasers. Keyword Retargeting: We’ll create a custom keyword list containing

hundreds of words and phrases to capture users whose searches match your messaging. We’ll then track each word’s results and update this list throughout your campaign. Geo-Fencing: This is the drawing of a virtual barrier around a location. When prospects enter this parameter, ads are delivered on their devices. We can help you target by neighborhood and other specific locations (including your competitors’ cities, towns, or zip codes).

Conversion Zones: These zones are a powerful means of tracking those who have seen your ad and then walk through your door … think EVENTS! You can target a relevant event, such as a Panther’s game, collect the users, and then market to them at the event and/or up to 30 days prior. w

Geo-Targeting: Delivering ads to prospects that meet specific criteria and are inside a defined radius is another benefit of programmatics advertising. Each campaign needs a geographic target when using the keyword tactic and you can target by cities, towns, states, or zip codes.

Tooth Injurywhat to do?

OUT OF PLACE

or a basketball court, watching your child’s team compete…when suddenly a player takes a hit to the mouth. Upon inspection, it is realized that their front permanent teeth have been knocked loose or completely out. What is the right thing to do? S O, YO U ’ R E S I T T I N G AT A B A L L F I E L D

Unfortunately, this happens more often than we would like to imagine. With my own two sons playing sports, I have seen my fair share of mouth injuries. In fact, during my son’s baseball practice last month, I received an urgent call that a teammate had taken a direct hit to the mouth and was missing his front tooth, with others out of place. With proper action, we were able to save his teeth. Discussions with coaches and parents following this incident motivated me to write this article, with the hope that similar situations can also be addressed promptly and correctly in the future.

KNOCKED OUT

If someone falls or gets hit in the mouth with enough force, the entire tooth (including the root) can be knocked out of the socket. This whole tooth is about twice the length of what is normally visible in the mouth—about 1 inch long. There will be a visible hole (bleeding) in the gums. When this happens, the nerves and blood vessels will be damaged, but the tooth can be reattached to the bone. The odds of saving a tooth are highest in children but very possible in adults if swift action is taken upon injury: 1

Find the tooth. Hold

it by the crown (chewing end) and try to avoid touching or wiping the root, as this surface contains vital cells that aide in reattachment. If dirty, water can be gently poured to rinse off, but caution should be used to handle as little as possible. • If a tooth cannot be found after being knocked out, it is important to control the bleeding of the gums by placing pressure on the socket with a napkin or gauze.

40

|

JUNE 2022

|

Put the tooth back in the socket. This is the best option for 2

the tooth when possible. Be sure to orient the tooth in the proper direction and insert without using too much force. Hold or bite in place with a napkin until a dental professional can take over.

• If the tooth cannot be clearly and easily reinserted, it is important to keep it moist by placing in a cup of milk, saline, or in the mouth next to the cheek. Avoid tap water, which can cause the root cells to swell and burst. • If a child knocks out a baby tooth, the tooth should not be reinserted, as this could damage the adult tooth growing underneath.

lakenormanw oman.com

Call a dentist immediately. 3

The sooner a tooth is reimplanted and stabilized, the better the chance the tooth will reattach permanently.

After an injury, a tooth may not be completely knocked out, but can be pushed back, forward, or upward into the gum. When this occurs, a dentist should be called immediately, as the tooth root or socket could be fractured. An x-ray and exam can determine the presence of any fractures and help determine the course of action. Loose and displaced teeth can be repositioned and stabilized with a splint for up to two weeks or longer if a bone fracture is noted.

PREVENTION

Athletic mouthguards are the best protection from sport injuries to the mouth. They not only protect the teeth, but also the gums, tongue, cheek, and lips. They act as a cushion to absorb and disperse forces, which reduces the severity of injuries. They can be customized by a dental provider for the best fit, comfort, and protection. Boil-and-bite guards and stock appliances are also available but have proven less effective due to design. Talk to your dental provider about the right options for you. w

THINGS MY FATHER TAUGHT ME E V E R Y D AY B U T E S P E C I A L LY O N

1

Dad teasing me about my bowling score pushed me towards striving to always do my best and be my best at all that I set my mind to do.

2

Failing miserably in math as a high school student, partly because I disliked my teacher. At that time, his advice was: “Your teacher is in charge and what he / she says goes. You’ll be out in the workforce one day and you can’t just change jobs because you don’t like your boss.”

3

Going to see a Broadway show in NY. I resisted it like the plague but ended up loving it! He always said, “Dare to explore what is different because you never know until you’ve experienced it.”

4

Having a father & son talk with him after I had messed up and expecting him to be upset at me, only to be told that it was ok because what had transpired was a life lesson.

5

Taking things at face value. I’d say, “But what if someone’s lying to you?” He would smile back with a twinkle in his eye saying, “They’re only lying to themselves.”

6

When he took me aside and told me that when interacting with a woman, treat her with gentleness and listening ears to understand her before I spoke.

FAT H E R ’ S D AY

I’m reminded how fortunate to be celebrated by my wife and three amazing children. At the same time each year, it’s also bittersweet because I yearn for my dad that we lost to a heart attack when I was 20 years old. There are special lessons that a dad brings to a relationship with his child(ren) … Indelible pieces of wisdom that keep his memory and spirit alive. Simple things that translate to life lessons! Wissam E. Nadra, MD, MHA, FAAP, AIHM, is the president and clinical director at Lakeshore Pediatric Center in Denver. He is a boardcertified pediatrician and is also certified in integrative medicine. For more information, visit www.lakeshorepediatric.com or call 704.489.8401.

Finally, and the best advice he gave me:

7

“My advice is free, so take it while you can because other people charge a lot of money for it.”

Peace and Love to all the dads around the world. Happy Father’s Day.
