After all, exposed and relatively defenseless, our ancestors stood a fairly good chance of being eaten by a member of a predatory species. Although I don’t have firsthand experience, I presume it doesn’t take long to discover there is safety and comfort in togetherness when you’re being stalked by a gi-normous tiger. Though we don’t have to dodge saber tooth cats today, the protective bond of family is as important as ever. Unlike in the past, though, and especially since covid has transformed our lives, us modern-day humans tend to live and work in relative isolation from one another. And with headlines dominated by stories of crime and violence, we have good reason to insulate ourselves from strangers—our world can be a downright terrifying place. I know that I had begun to lose my faith in the goodness of people, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that. But then a complete stranger treated me like family. As lake dwellers, you might not be familiar with Independence Boulevard in Charlotte, but think Daytona 500, only with six lanes of traffic. So when my car stalled, I was filled with fear as my son and I pushed it across the lanes of oncoming cars as drivers honked and shouted not-so-helpful suggestions. Just as I was about to give up, a stranger was there pushing with us. At the shoulder, I thanked him profusely, expecting him to be on his way— after all, his beach-bound family was waiting for him in his car. Instead, this complete stranger waved down drivers, procured jumper cables, and tried to jumpstart my battery. When that failed, he drove to Auto Zone, purchased a new battery, then returned to put it in my car. When that didn’t work either, he called a friend with a towing business and waited with us until he got there. Nearly three hours later, when he should have been sitting on a beach with a cool beverage in his hand, he finally turned to leave. As I hugged him and once again expressed my gratitude, he replied, “That’s what family does, right? And the way I see it, we’re all just part of one big family.”

What a wonderful world it would be if we all treated each other—both friend and stranger alike—as family. After all, we are all part of the human family, trying to make it in this crazy adventure called life. But then again, perhaps this experience was meant to show me that many of us already do just that. Maybe, because I had begun to expect the darkness in people, that’s all I was able to see. This kind stranger showed me that the world is full of good people—family, really—I just had to look for them. So the next time I meet a stranger in the line at the grocery or in the waiting room at the dentist, instead of politely nodding and then burying my face in my phone, I’m going to ask, “How’s your mom and them?”…because that’s just what family does.

With each family member’s own unique set of skills, strengths, and personality traits, a winning team is there to be honed. When each is functioning in their zone, with the betterment of the team as motivation, the family unit is strengthened and individual relationships are solidified. Participating in walkathons/marathons (especially for a charity) is a great way to come together for a common cause. Camping is also tons of fun and lends itself particularly well to team-building exercises (pitching tent, collecting firewood, cooking, etc.). Catheran Quintero is a student in FeedNC’s Warehouse/Grocery Workforce Development Program and employed at Harris Teeter through FeedNC’s Platinum Partnership. Catheran is not only the first female student to enroll in FeedNC’s Warehouse Workforce Development Program, but she is also the first student in the pilot program to gain employment.

LKNW RECOGNIZES A WOMAN DOING EXCEPTIONAL WORK IN THE LAKE NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.

on SELF-RELIANCE & RESILIENCY: I have had many challenges and losses in my life, but I always try to pray through any and all of those moments that life inevitably presents …at the end of the day, those losses have led me to great things. Obtaining my master’s degree (Master of Education Curriculum and Instruction & Educational Leadership) and then moving to North Carolina were life-altering experiences that taught me a lot. In accomplishing all of this on my own, I learned that I am much more resilient than I thought.

on WHAT INSPIRES ME: My grandparents were a big influence in my life and raised me with good Southern values. They taught me the importance of hard work and loving what you do. Currently, FeedNC has used its Platinum Partnership with a local Harris Teeter store to solidify a part-time position for me until I finish my training. The thing I love the most about this position is that it helps me give back to my community by mirroring the mission of FeedNC, and it contributes to what I am learning in the classroom.

WRITER Leslie Ogle PHOTOGRAPHER Chelsea Bren on FINDING MY NICHE: I grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and attended Concordia University; I now live and work in Mooresville. In June, I started as a student in FeedNC’s Warehouse/Grocery Job Training Program. I saw a way to marry my goals of getting my forklift certification and working in an industry that is in high demand. I found a warehouse modernization position, so I know that there are positions available to use my skills in project management and as a Scrum Master (the head of a team that produces, develops, and strategizes within an organization—basically a human resource professional).

on BEING THE CHANGE: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” –Mahatma Gandhi. That quote has always resonated with me. I have lived a life of service from a very young age and the Southern values I was raised with help me move forward—treating others not only as I would like to be treated, but how they would like to be treated. w

catheran QUINTERO FEATURES WOMAN TO WATCH 16 | SEPTEMBER 2022 | lakenormanwoman.com

on THINGS THAT MAKE ME SMILE: My favorite hobbies are reading, listening to music, and being creative. I have started a voiceover business called Luminous VO and am hoping to book something within the next year. I love all of the performing arts and participate in many. I also spend a lot of time at Lake Norman State Park or at the boat docks because I love the water and nature in general. I have traveled to California, Las Vegas, Spain, and up and down the East Coast. Until recently, my most memorable trip was to Spain because it was my first time out of the country; however, I recently went to Cherokee County which was very special since I am Native American … it was an honor to go to the reservation and take in all the culture that I embrace.

Here are some guidelines to bring peace to the soul:

EMOTIONALLY- Talk to a therapist or call an emotionally healthy friend to process your feelings and fears, but also focus on what's going well for you. Try writing down two things you are thankful for every day. Practice positive self-talk and be kind and patient with yourself. Explore who you are, not what you have or do, but whom God created you to be.

We welcomed 2022 with the hope of some normalcy. Still, the world experienced another wave of tumultuous events—Ukraine war, cyber and nuclear threats, skyrocketing gas and grocery prices, supply chain shortages, human rights issues, and new virus concerns. Living through historic threats like these often has a lasting, traumatic impact on generations, leading to unprecedented stress levels. Emotions tied to uncertain and unsettling times can make simple tasks feel draining when re-adjusting to social interaction, education, work, and travel. Long-term stresses constantly test boundaries and patience, so finding peace is essential to mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and relational health.

The division drastically reduced the muchneeded emotional support and the human connection necessary to manage stress. These unmet needs resulted in some unhealthy ways of coping during isolation. A 2021 survey conducted by the American Psychological Association with 3,013 participants revealed:

The rapid and volatile events caused massive changes to daily living. The aftermath of grief, chaos, and stress left many people physically exhausted, mentally depleted, and emotionally overwhelmed. The fear and panic caused severe racial and political tensions that damaged familial and social relationships. Sadly, I witnessed many people lose their most important and loving relationships because of intense emotions and opinions tied to these events.

Finding peace During chaos

RELATIONALLY- Set aside quality time with your loved ones and talk about the good times together. Plan and cook meals together—avoid making tasks so complex that it feels like a job. Set boundaries; try to start and stop the workday at reasonable times. w

or family-matterscounseling.com.michon@ LKNE XPERT

MENTALLY- It's so easy to lose yourself and wrap your life around work and family. Find healthy distractions to unwind and relax with activities such as reading or listening to a book, doing something creative, decluttering your home, learning a new skill, or rediscovering your passions. Try to focus on things that encourage you and bring you joy.

FAMILY FAMILY MATTERS WITH MICHON WRITER Michon McCorkle18 | SEPTEMBER 2022 | lakenormanwoman.com

SPIRITUALLY- Inviting God into your daily schedule with prayer can frame your entire day. God cares about the smallest detail of your life, and He hears and answers in unique ways. Try joining a bible study, playing worship music, dancing around your home, or subscribing to a daily devotional.

for

PHYSICALLY- Add self-care to your weekly calendar like any other meeting. Increased anxiety and depression can manifest as muscle tension, irritation, headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, insomnia, and restlessness. Incorporate short walks or yoga stretches into your daily routine. Develop a good sleep routine and avoid social media and the evening news.

LIKE ANY RELATIONSHIP, the one between parent and child must be cultivated and nurtured. From the moment they are born, you write on the slate of who they will become. Proper communication, trust, and respect are key, and the relationship you build with your child will determine the success of how he or she interacts with others when they are adults. With that in mind, here are some tips on fostering good communication skills between parent and child: Your Child

5 WAYS TO FAMILY Communicate With

20 | SEPTEMBER 2022 | lakenormanwoman.com

Be Present This means you must stop what you are doing and really hear your child. Try not to criticize or question their point of view but simply engage in questions and conversation so they feel that you are there for them—not to parent but to support. Respect Your Child Express interest in what they are saying without being intrusive, and let them complete their train of thought before you reply. Focus on your child’s feelings rather than your own. Don’t Be a Right Fighter You can agree to disagree and let them know you value their opinions. Having open, intelligent debates fosters mutual respect and arms them with valuable skills for the adult world. w For more information on building a strong parent/child relationship, visit www.psychologytoday.com 1 Schedule Time Set some time aside each week to converse with your child. Perhaps schedule a parent/child date night so that you can have some one-on-one time.2 Soften Your Replies It is human nature to guide your child or disagree with their thought process, but kids will tune you out if you respond with criticism or negativity. 3 4 5 ASSISTING CHILDREN, INDIVIDUALS, COUPLES, & FAMILIES COPING WITH LIFE CHALLENGES NOW ACCEPTING PATIENTS IN-PERSON OR VIRTUALLY: Birkdale Office Suites 300, Huntersville, NC BAYOUMENTALHEALTH.ORG Bayou Mental Health Services continues to expand its reputation as an exemplary service provider in the mental health field and community support services from Louisiana, & now coming to Lake Norman. LKN SPEECH-LANGUAGEPATHOLOGY

The Best Part of Waking Up Being well rested, starting my day in prayer and meditation with a great cup of coffee, and going to the gym to work out with my personal trainer and lady friends … now that’s a great day! It’s funny how a perfect day can change over time—22 years ago, it was a baby who was healthy and could sleep through the night … today, it’s hoping I can be healthy and sleep through the night. The seasons of life certainly change your perspectives, and we must trust the transformations that only time can bring us. I have learned to be more present, intentional, and grateful. I have had a blessed life but have also dealt with my share of challenges, and these are the things that stretch you and make you stronger if you allow them to. It’s your attitude, relationship with God, and those around you that make the difference.

Our First Cup I grew up in Wilmington when it was still a sleepy little beach town. My parents moved there when I was 5, and we spent lots of time at Wrightsville Beach. I went to school and church with all the same people my entire life, so when it was time for college, the mountains and Appalachian State University caught my attention. I earned my undergraduate degree in communication sciences and disorders and a North Carolina teaching certificate. I then attended the University of South Carolina to earn my master’s degree in speech language pathology with a minor in audiology.

A sit-down chat with MARIANNE UMPHLETT of LKN Speech-LanguagePathology

Family, Faith, and Fortitude My mother always encouraged me to pursue higher education, find a career that I loved, and to be independent. My dad said that as a toddler I would sit in his lap and hold his face in my hands and make him look at me to answer my questions. I also took an active role in teaching my 4-year-old brother how to read when I was only 10. As an anxious teenager, I prayed so hard for God to show me what my purpose and career calling should be, but I guess I always knew it would be helping people in some capacity.

WRITER Leslie Ogle PHOTOGRAPHER Chelsea Bren

A Warm Cup of Gratitude In 2009, armed with more than two decades of clinical experience in hospitals, outpatient settings, home health, and management of rehabilitation services, I finally opened my own private independent practice. I’m proud of the courage it took and that we have stayed true to our mission of creating strong relationships with the families that we serve. They remain our priority and bottom line. We are not owned or managed by a large corporation or hospital-based network and do not operate under productivity models. I am so proud of our team and feel they are some of the absolute finest speech language pathologists. I’m not sure how I got to be so lucky … it humbles me, and I am grateful.

A Strong and Beautiful Blend Kevin and I were high school sweethearts and married in 1987. After we both landed jobs in Charlotte, we quickly discovered Lake Norman and bought an old sailboat; we named it The Spirit of 1976 and kept it docked at the old Outrigger marina and campground that is now known as the Peninsula Yacht Club. We built our home in 1994 and have been here ever since. Our kids, Sarah and Will, are strong individuals—compassionate, bright, and hardworking, and we couldn’t be prouder as we adjust to the empty-nest years.

Parents are often looking for activities that bring their family members together, but it can be quite the challenge—especially if the kids are at different stages and ages. But volunteering is a great way to bring everyone — parents, children, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and more — together around common missions and goals. Here are a few local organizations to support.

Gabe’s Heart Foundation’s mission is to keep the heart of Gabriel Michael Jacobs, who passed away at just 12 years old, beating by sharing his spirit of giving and always helping those around him. They do this through random acts of kindness that allow them to share the message of anti-bullying as well as raising awareness of sudden pediatric cardiac death. Their purpose was birthed out of the service of Gabe who was an anti-bullying mediator and was affectionately known as “Guardian Gabe” by his peers. Gabe’s Heart Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that orchestrates various volunteer projects throughout the community, including a 5k walk the fourth Saturday in September. This year’s event will be on September 24th –the walkathon raises funds for Doing It Gabe’s Way Random Acts of Kindness. For details, visit www.gabesheartfoundation.org.

Jodie Golab, Fundraising and Project Assistant with DKMS-Charlotte, announces an array of family-oriented fundraising activities scheduled for October. DKMS is an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders by creating awareness; recruiting blood stem cell donors to provide a second chance at life; raising funds to match donor registration costs; supporting the improvement of therapies through research; and supporting patients from day one of their diagnoses. “We hope to extend our reach and our donor registry,” Jodie says. “Only 30 percent of patients find a matching donor within their family,” she continues, “and heritage matters … a patient’s best chance of finding a matching donor is someone of similar ancestry. Our goal is to add as many new and diverse donors to the registry as possible.” Please visit www.dkms.org for a full list of events or contact Jodie at development@dkms.org.

The black-tie gala emceed by WBTV’s former top news anchor Paul Cameron will feature a cocktail hour, three-course sit-down dinner, live entertainment, silent auction, and several prominent keynote speakers. “FAITH AND FAMILY … being intentional in giving priority and energy to these areas allows everything else to fall into place for me,” Dr. Julianne Colvin says with a smile as big as her heart. As co-owner of Crawford & Colvin Family And Cosmetic Dentistry in Huntersville, this busy wife and mom of two relies on her team at work, at home, and at the ballfield— where her boys (including her husband) spend much of their time. Despite the mad rush of practices, games, and life in general, Dr. Colvin would not change a thing. In fact, she is a good example of recognizing the Now and being able to fully appreciate this precious, fleeting time in her and her family’s life. “Tyler (12) and Carson (9) both play travel baseball, and my husband, Jason, is the head coach of Carson’s team,” she explains.

“But the boys love their sports more than anything else right now and getting to watch them grow, learn, and succeed on the field (and on the basketball court in the winter!) is so fulfilling. They are learning life lessons and making memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. We sit along the fences and sidelines with other parents who have become our best friends. We all cheer and love on these kids as though they are all our own. And as the seasons go by, it is becoming more apparent that these hectic, stressful, exciting, beautiful days will come to an end one day … and I will miss them with all my heart.”

Originally from Charleston, West Virginia, Dr. Colvin had an early interest in healthcare. Both of her parents were pharmacists and were great influences in her desire towards medicine. Although she was unsure of the exact direction she would take, high school gave young Julianne an opportunity to volunteer and shadow professionals in hospital settings. One fortuitous day she was offered the chance to observe her childhood dentist: “That’s the moment when I knew what I wanted to do,” she recalls. “I went home that day and told my mom, ‘I want to be a dentist!’ It was the tangibility of the profession that was initially attractive. “Our goal was and is to create an office centered on service—an experience that surpasses great dentistry alone,” Dr. Colvin says. “We have always tried to offer a comfortable, inviting atmosphere where patients feel more like family … a place where your time is valued so you’re not kept waiting; where your desires are heard; where clear communication, patient education, and state-of-the-art technology ensure the best of care. We opened the doors of Crawford & Colvin Dentistry in 2012, and we are proud of the amazing team of hygienists, dental assistants, and treatment coordinators who have helped us achieve these goals and make them the daily reality for our patients and community.”

“I was able to serve a physical need while connecting on a deeper, personal level,” she recalls. "I was emotionally moved through empathy to demonstrate compassion, gentleness, and a desire to meet others where they were … to understand the person behind a problem and make a real difference … to see the potential for a healthy, genuine smile that reflected more than just their teeth. A passion for serving others became the motivation for my career.”

After dental school, Dr. Colvin was accepted into the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program at UNC-Chapel Hill where she gained invaluable experience in implant dentistry, complex cosmetic cases, and practice management. Before her residency completion, however, it was a dental mission trip to Guatemala that gave her clarity of purpose in her career.

w lakenormanwoman.com | SEPTEMBER 2022 | 29

Having faced her share of challenges, Dr. Colvin’s positive attitude and healthy perspective have been shaped by life experiences. Diagnosed with thyroid cancer after the birth of her second son, she saw the fragility of life firsthand. “I grew as a listener,” she says, “and became more aware of God’s presence, direction, and hand in my life. I recognized that disappointments and failures are His way of reminding me that I cannot do it all on my own. I lean on this in raising my boys, hoping to instill this lesson in their lives: there is a bigger picture that requires our trust and understanding that things may not always go the way we would choose, but they are for a greater purpose. This gives me peace and hope for anything the future may hold, personally or professionally. It all circles back to faith and family … the foundation of my life.”

I had observed that a patient’s issues could rarely be solved in an immediate, hands-on way. Having the ability to address a patient’s pain and problem in a single visit, to have them leave better than they arrived, seemed extremely satisfying. I also appreciated the artistry involved in the process and was drawn to the direct patient interaction.”

More than a decade ago now, Dr. Colvin was presented with the opportunity to partner with a colleague of hers, Dr. Brent Crawford, whom she had known for many years. The two shared a similar vision for dentistry and their patients, so Dr. Colvin didn’t hesitate, knowing the partnership would be a good fit.

So why are so many of our clients requesting bidets be added to their plan? What are the options?

OH, NOT THE ONE IN VEGAS.

3. Bidet seat topper What needs to be done to install this creature comfort? Amy and I agree, every new construction bath or bath renovation now gets an electrical outlet next to the toilet. The electrician is already there, and this is not much of an additional cost, but allows the homeowner the choice to add a bidet seat at that time or later on. We also add blocking for grab bars to be added later to allow for aging in place. What are the features you may want? Comfort, UV light, everyday cleaning, spray options with water temperature control, warm air drying.

2. TRAVEL - people who have traveled to other countries (or even luxury hotels in the US) are able to experience bidets, as they have had a long history in other cultures and countries. When these folks return from their travels, they want the same experience available to them every day, in their own homes. It’s one of those products that once you’ve been able to experience the comfort and cleansing, you don’t want to be without it.

That didn’t last long. When the pandemic hit, she says, “That’s really when my new career began brewing. I was just trying to find my passion and purpose while navigating through motherhood. I was a full-time stay-athome mom to my babies for about six months and during that time I tried everything under the sun. I started a surveying job that was work-fromhome; I purchased pallets of various items for resale; I bought resin and gems to make resin art … my creative/artistic side has always tried to shine through in whatever I do. After working up the courage to register for a course in microblading, Rachel headed to Atlanta for her first class. When it wrapped up, she was hooked! “I fell absolutely in love with everything about it,” she smiles, “every little aspect of it!” Rachel would continue to further her training and education through a course at PhiAcademy in California and two other trainings in Miami.

“At the time,” she explains, “writing for a magazine was my dream job and I was overthe-moon!” But she quickly realized the hours were less than family friendly. With two small children (Adelynn, 6, and Kobe, 5), the schedule was a bit chaotic. “I could feel myself starting to doubt that career path,” she recalls, “but at 25 years old and with two kids, I felt it was safer to stay with what I knew.”

Juggling family life and researching potential careers, Rachel became curious about microblading – a kind of permanent makeup usually performed on the eyebrows. “I started looking into having it done for myself,” she says, “and then I discovered some beforeand-after pictures of eyebrows and lips and saw how it changed so many women’s lives. I became completely obsessed about the process … it’s like the universe was saying ‘This is it!’ I could feel an odd pull toward this industry, like it was on my mind for a very specific reason.”

That creative streak led her to Rowan Cabarrus College where she temporarily shelved her interest in fine arts and pursued journalism—which led to an internship at Cabarrus Magazine.

LKNE XPERT WHY DO WE HAVE wisdomteeth IF NEEDTHEYTOBE taken out? HEALTH WRITER Dr. Michael Foran38 | SEPTEMBER 2022 | lakenormanwoman.com

WISDOMTHEBEHIND Teeth

When patients have their wisdom teeth removed, they should remember that it is a surgical procedure. It involves having anesthesia, surgical removal of small amounts of surrounding bone and teeth, and a recovery period. Some patients feel great the next day while others may take several days to recover. During this time, patients should limit their activities at home, especially athletics, and stick to a softer diet. Syringes are given to patients to care for and clean the extraction sites.

AS ORAL SURGEONS, we perform many different surgical procedures. One of the most common procedures is removal of wisdom teeth, also called third molars. One of the most common questions that we get is, “Why do we have wisdom teeth if they need to be taken out?”

Knowing some of the facts surrounding wisdom teeth and their removal can help you plan to take care of them and prevent future, more serious issues down the road. w

Impacted wisdom teeth create a pocket that bacteria can live in and cannot be effectively cleaned out. When these bacteria multiply, can damage the adjacent molars and supporting tissues. It can also cause cavities in hard-to-reach places that may not be fixable and can end up causing loss of the adjacent teeth. Additionally, impacted teeth can cause different cysts and tumors to form, which need to be removed. Even when wisdom teeth erupt into the mouth, rarely can they be maintained or kept clean, resulting in The best time to remove wisdom teeth is between the ages of 14 and 20 as a general rule. Everyone in this age group should have a full mouth x-ray, called a panorex, to check the positioning of their Wisdom

wisdom teeth so a more individual plan can be formulated. Waiting until one’s late 20s, 30s, or 40s generally makes the removal much more difficult and increases the risks for complications and longer, slower recovery periods.

““

While there are several theories proposed for the presence of wisdom teeth, no one particular theory has been proven. What we do know is that whether they are impacted or erupted, they can and often do present an array of oral health problems.

Sometimes patients may be slow to heal or have pain that continues beyond a few days. This is generally referred to as a “dry socket.” While dry socket is not dangerous, it can be uncomfortable and refractory to oral pain medications. In these cases, patients should follow up with their surgeon to have medicine placed directly into the extraction sites to ease the discomfort.

LIFE’S ADVENTURES

LOVE WHAT YOU DO AND WORK HARD

I have always had a good work ethic that has followed me through my entire life. At 77 I am still going strong. I love my work and I believe in it—hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the best kept secret in medicine. Seeing the results it gives our patients is the most rewarding experience both personally and professionally. Autistic children start to put words together for the first time; a young athlete avoids long-term brain injury after a concussion; a military veteran finds healing for his PTSD and is able to live a fulfilling life … it is all so rewarding, and I am very blessed to be a part of it. This salad is anything but boring with its crunchy mix of shredded coleslaw, chopped veggies, and ramen noodles. Toss it all up with an amazing sweet and spicy Thai peanut sauce for a salad that’s healthy and satisfying. The sauce is extra peanutty, citrusy, and sweetened ever so lightly with honey. It’s delicious on everything from noodles, to grilled chicken, to vegetables, or makes a perfect dip for spring rolls or chicken kabobs. You can make this salad ahead of time for summer dinners or working lunches. If you’re making this ahead of time, just keep the salad and peanut sauce separate until you’re ready to serve.
