FROM THE
WOMEN power MOST OF US WOULD AGREE THAT CANCER IS NOT A LAUGHING MATTER.
It’s not funny in the least. In fact, it’s the opposite of funny—it sucks.
But maybe we’re missing something. Our ancestors, after all, seemed to understand that laughter is not only good for the soul, it’s also good for the body. The Book of Proverbs references the healing power of humor. Ancient Greek physicians prescribed visits to comedians for their patients. Clowns were highranking members of many Native American tribes. And more recently, Tania Katan, in her book My One-Night Stand With Cancer, describes how humor helped her defeat breast cancer not once, but twice.
DANA JORDAN
Tania was as terrified as any cancer patient when she was diagnosed at the age of 20…and then again at age 30. In fact, she even contemplated ending her life. But when her mother’s kleptomania of waiting room magazines ramped up to an absurd level, Tania found herself smiling. And when her best friend suggested they mock everything to do with breast cancer instead of shying away from it (they said things like “breast wishes instead of “best wishes” and “that’s the breast idea I’ve heard!”), she found that its terrible power over her was diminished. I discovered the healing powers of humor at the planning of my father’s funeral, of all places. My father passed away rather suddenly, and my brother and I fought shellshock as we made the arrangements. We could do little more than nod our heads to the funeral director’s questions, tears streaming down our faces. The last thing we had on our minds was laughter. That is until the director looked at us with the most serious of expressions and said, “I see that your father elected to perform the cremation himself.”
LAURA ADAMS
My father was both a thrifty and a self-reliant man—he abhorred the thought of wasting money, and he would often rely on his own skills to accomplish a task in lieu of hiring someone else, even when he had neither the knowledge nor skills to get the job done. But I was fairly certain that even Sam Jordan had not figured out a way to save a buck or two by cremating himself. So when the director said this with a straight face, I started laughing and I couldn’t stop. He finally realized what he had said and corrected himself, but I guffawed until tears were streaming down my face, this time with jocularity instead of grief. The staff was certain I was having a nervous breakdown, but the truth is, imagining my costconscious father stubbornly handling his own cremation in order to avoid the expense simply cracked me up. I finally composed myself enough to get through the rest of the planning and the funeral, but not without several more laughing episodes. There were plenty of tears, too, of course; but that image of my father caused the laughter to bubble up in me time and again and got me through the hardest parts. Heck, I’m chuckling about it even now. Life can be hard; sometimes we need to laugh hard at life. Laughter may not be able to solve our problems completely, but it sure does provide some muchneeded distance between the situation and our fears about it. So go ahead, give laughter a try … it is indeed the best medicine! w

It still seems surreal but we lost our dad last year to pancreatic cancer, and the universe definitely shifted. We were so close to him … it’s been quite the adjustment, but it’s brought us even closer as sisters and bonded us stronger as a family. Our bond cannot be broken.

Savory Moments
We make it a priority not to bring work home. It’s important for us to engage in fun activities with our families where there is a lot of laughter. We also like to follow a healthy diet and get our exercise in, but we make it fun. It all circles back to our dad—he is why we are such close sisters, sharing so much in business and family and, quite frankly, why we are so successful 10 years in. He taught us everything, and we know he is smiling down and celebrating with us.

I have never met a woman across the spectrum of adulthood that is not apprehensive each and every time they lean into the mammography machine. It does not discriminate and fear is the great equalizer. Phaedra Pistone of Mooresville is a two-time breast cancer survivor but, like all Pink Warriors, she does not let that define her. And, like many fellow warriors, when it got darkest, she straightened that crown and forged on … quite literally since Phaedra was recently crowned Mrs. U.S. Continental after a weekend-long competition in Stuart, Florida. Phaedra is the owner of Classic Bride & Formals bridal boutique in Cornelius and an active community volunteer, donating her time and talents to numerous local organizations. Her platform while serving as Mrs. U.S. Continental includes the American Cancer Society, Shirley’s Angels, and National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. During her reign, she will advocate for breast cancer awareness and continue her mission to empower, encourage, and educate people about the importance of early detection through mammography. “I will continue to help provide FREE or low-cost mammograms to all women,” Phaedra says, “and I will continue to educate all about the importance of early detection with mammograms because it saved my life twice. Ladies, get your mammogram … it could save your life, too!” In her leisure time, Phaedra enjoys skydiving, running, crafting, and road trips with her husband and four-legged family members.

Amy Rubacky “There are some moments in our lives that are so pivotal that we never stop drawing on them for wisdom, courage, and direction.” (From Matthew Kelly’s book, “Life is Messy”)
For registered nurse and mom of three Amy Rubacky, there was no history of cancer in her family tree and she was diligent about annual mammograms; but, in late October of 2013 all that changed. “There are moments in everyone’s life,” Amy says, “when the world just stops spinning...even for a few seconds. When my doctor requested that I meet him at the office at 6:30 pm, I knew what was coming. His exact words, ‘I regret to inform you, you have invasive ductal carcinoma,’ just hung in the air. My only thought was of my children who were 11, 9, and 6 at the time. My only prayer was to be able to raise them. I went into nurse mode … time to make a plan.” There was much ahead for Amy: lots of testing, surgery, radiation, and postoperative treatments that would all take its toll on her body— even the eventual removal of her ovaries which propelled her into menopause. But through it all, she went step-by-step following the plan as directed by many specialists. “This month I am eight years cancer free, and I am very clear on what I want to do with the rest of my life and what gifts I have to contribute to make the world a better place. I am grateful to be raising my children and to know deep friendships and the value of connection with those I love. I know how very lucky I am to be here, and not a day goes by that I forget to take note of the small things that make life so beautiful … a good cup of coffee, a meaningful chat with a friend, candles that crackle and smell of lavender, hearing my kids laugh, a gorgeous sunset, live music … life is good!”
Vickie Hamilton In September 2019, Vickie Hamilton had her yearly mammogram at Iredell Health System’s Women’s Health Center. Knowing that the breast x-ray detects cancers too small for an individual to simply feel, she has always been diligent to follow recommendations to have an annual mammogram starting at age 40. Vickie had always heard that breast cancer was hereditary and stemmed from the mother’s side, and since that didn’t apply to her, she never considered herself at risk. Then she was notified of her test results; the radiologist who reviewed her results had seen something suspicious, and additional images were needed. It was soon after that she learned she had cancer, and a million thoughts and emotions flooded her mind. Vickie recalls: “I thought, ‘Maybe it’s nothing.’ But then you begin to think, ‘Gosh, they’re kind of serious about this.’ Your mind naturally asks, ‘How bad is it?’ and ‘How sick am I going to be?’” After the additional imaging showed her lymph nodes were clear of any cancer spreading, Vickie underwent a lumpectomy just a month after her initial mammogram. “I have done very well since my treatments ended, and I see my oncologist regularly. I am very diligent about keeping all my appointments, taking the prescribed medications, and following the advice of my doctor. My advice to others is to get your mammograms done! Early detection is key to your outcome.” w

reducing your risk of breast cancer
A Special Q&A With Dr. Poras K. Patel of Southern Oncology Specialists
ACCO R DIN G TO T H E A ME R I CA N CA N C E R S O C I E TY,
about 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States for 2021. And while breast cancer remains the most common cancer in women, there are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. What are my risk factors? Alcohol consumption: 2-3 drinks per day increases breast cancer risk by 20 percent. Lack of physical activity: Regular physical activity reduces breast cancer risk, especially in postmenopausal women. Overweight/Obesity: Having more fat tissue after menopause can raise estrogen levels, which increases risk of breast cancer. Nulliparous: History of multiple pregnancies and/or becoming pregnant at an early age reduces breast cancer risk. Not breastfeeding: Breastfeeding may slightly lower breast cancer risk, especially if it is continued for a year or more. Birth control: Some birth control methods use hormones, which may increase breast cancer risk. Hormone therapy: Use of hormonal therapy with estrogen after menopause increases risk of breast cancer. LKN EXPERT
22
OCTOBER 2021
What are unmodifiable risk factors? Genetics (5-10 percent of breast cancer cases are hereditary). Mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the most common cause of hereditary breast cancer. Personal or family history of breast cancer. Race/ethnicity (White women have slightly higher risk than African American women; however, in women under age 45, breast cancer is more common in African American women). Having dense breast tissue. Abnormal breast tissue. Early menstruation and late menopause. Radiation exposure to chest before age 30.
Poras K. Patel, MD, is board-certified in hematology/oncology and received his residency and fellowship training at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. He was honored as chief resident and chief fellow during his training and has published several medical articles and journals. Dr. Patel is a physician with Southern Oncology Specialists. What should I consider in cancer risk assessment? Women above age 35 should have their risk for breast cancer estimated according to the modified Gail model—which is a computerbased model that uses several factors, including age, race, age at menarche, age at first live birth or nulliparity, number of first-degree relatives with breast cancer, number of previous breast biopsies, and histology of the breast biopsies to produce estimates of future breast cancer risk. Women at high risk for breast cancer may benefit from riskreducing intervention. Options for risk reduction should be discussed in a shared decision-making environment. Risk-reducing mastectomy is generally considered in women with a pathogenic genetic mutation conferring a high-risk for breast cancer, compelling family history, or possibly with prior thoracic radiation therapy before age 30. Some women may benefit from bilateral oophorectomy (removal of both ovaries). There are four approved riskreducing agents - tamoxifen, raloxifene, anastrozole, and exemestane. Tamoxifen can be utilized in premenopausal and postmenopausal women, whereas the other three agents can only be used in postmenopausal women. Tamoxifen and raloxifene are contraindicated in women with history of blood clot, and none of the agents are approved in pregnancy. Uterine malignancy was reported in a very small number of patients taking tamoxifen. w WRITER DR. PORAS K. PATEL

together by love, Soul Sisters are forever yin and yang … from the very first breath to the very last, they have each other’s back. WHEN IT MATTERS MOST
In 2019, I went through the fight of my life with breast cancer. I was so grateful to have my two soul sisters by my side. They came to most of my chemo treatments and cooked meals for my family. I feel so blessed to have them. Today I am cancer-free, and I owe so much to Joanne and Kim. They truly showed up when I needed them the most and demonstrated what real love and friendship look like … I am forever grateful. I lost touch with them after I got married in 1997, but we quickly reunited when Joanne and Kim both moved to Mooresville from Raleigh in 2015. Today, the three of us are closer than ever … and I love and appreciate them more than ever, too.
BON VOYAGE
Our favorite trip together was a trip to Aruba we took with our families. Our favorite girls’ trip was to Nashville last year. It was during Covid, but we were celebrating a 50th birthday so we took all the necessary precautions and made it happen … it turned out to be an amazing trip! My favorite road trip story, however, was when we went to a last-minute Darius Rucker concert in Charleston. We thought it was an indoor concert … we were wrong! Our favorite thing to do is getting together with our families. Our husbands are great friends, and our kids also get along well. We are most content to just gather in the backyard for a cookout or go find fun on the lake. w

With this being Lake Norman Woman Magazine’s 10th annual Breast Cancer Awareness/ Pink Pages edition, we take a look back at some memorable quotes, life lessons, and sage advice
found in past issues -
In October of 2018, the physicians of Southern Oncology Specialists showed us how it takes coordinated teamwork to battle cancer. Today, they continue to stress the importance of early detection, promoting regular mammograms, and working together as a team to fight the complexities of this disease.
“THE FIGHT” OCTOBER 2019:
“For those of you who have experienced or are experiencing the breast cancer battle, please know that your fight is shaping not only your life, but every single life that you touch, and many lives beyond those direct connections.” –LKNWoman Kim Branum

a passion FOR WHAT’S possible … M E E T J OSE P H I N E F E RM A N I A N , a 53-year-
old entrepreneur, inventor, brand manager, consultant, author, wife, mother, and daughter … and, oh yeah, a medical student! Josephine’s long list of passions and interests was birthed by some challenging life events. In 2004, when her son Roman was born with a severe case of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), Josephine decided to stay home with him. After noticing that she and young Roman began coughing every time cleaners were used, she set out to make a pure household cleaner with organic and natural ingredients and launched her product Germs Begone. When she couldn’t find a pure electrolyte drink for her sick infant, she created PediaOrganic. Fast forward to 2017 when Josephine’s world shifted, and she once again found her creativity and quest for knowledge fueled (and challenged!) by the vicissitudes of life. In January of that year, Josephine’s mother, 67 at the time, was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of gall bladder cancer. “This was a woman who spent her days and nights helping others and volunteering to do what she called God’s Work,” Josephine says with palpable love and admiration. “She rarely complained about anything. I don’t even remember her getting a cold or flu. She was pretty much always healthy. She was the first person our church called when a family was in need, often spending her entire day running around doing things for others, sometimes until bedtime.
And indeed she was. Josephine called upon her mother’s last oncologist and shared with him what she had discovered, and he immediately connected her with a surgeon at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center. “That surgeon, Dr. Cho, asked me to build out a clinical trial and bring it back to him so he could try it,” Josephine shares. “When I told him that I was not in the medical field, he said I was innovative and creative and he believed I could do it.” In January 2019, Josephine’s mom lost her battle with cancer, and Josephine and her husband decided to make a move from Michigan to Davidson, and it quickly became their happy place. “It was during the months of staying home after the move that I decided to further my education in clinical trials,” she says. “I never imagined I would be studying clinical and translational research at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, but here I am! I look forward to continuing my medical studies in my mother’s honor, developing my skills in clinical and translational research, and to someday put to the test what Dr. Cho and I believe will change a death sentence to one of hope and healing.” To learn more about Josephine’s journey from inventor to medical school, follow along @motherofinnovation on Instagram, and visit her website at www.motherofinnovation.com.
Something struck Josephine the day of her mother’s gallbladder removal. When the surgeon said she “cleaned up the margins,” but that the cancer would likely return in the same spot, Josephine was stumped as to why the doctors knew the cancer would return, yet they could do nothing about it. “I couldn’t sleep that night,” she recalls. “I began to research and read everything I could get my hands on … that turned into two years. I dropped everything else I was doing, but I knew I was on to something.”

Remembering Melody Whitaker Hall Melody Whitaker Hall was a wife, mother, and friend. We both attended and graduated from Bennett College in Greensboro. Bennett College is an historically Black college for women and it was there that I first met Melody. She was friendly and full of laughter and possessed a smile that could light up the room! During her time at Bennett she was also a member of the North Carolina A&T State University Marching Band and its drumline—affectionately named “Cold Steel.” Melody was a human resources manager at Rooms To Go in Charlotte when she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in 2006. She endured numerous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and a mastectomy. After going into remission, she and her husband, Howard,
welcomed their daughter Lauren into their lives. In 2011, Melody received the news that the cancer had returned and advanced to Stage 4 metastatic cancer. To know Melody was to know that she was a fighter! She fought valiantly, enduring years of treatments and clinical trials so that she could have a little more time with her husband, daughter, and friends. Although we lost Melody on October 20, 2017, she is now cancer free and pain free and resides in heaven with her new glorified body. Melody always had a word of encouragement ready on her lips and was sure to ask you how you were doing, despite what she had been going through. My hope is that her daughter, now 11, and husband find a bit of comfort in knowing that Melody’s legacy still lives on in the lives of so many in this area and across the country.
Until we meet again Melody, my sweet friend …

CONS
KNOW YOUR OPTIONS
Breast reconstruction can: • make the chest balanced when wearing a bra or swimsuit • make clothes fit better • eliminate the need for a prosthesis • provide an overall good feeling about one’s body
There are many different options and types of breast reconstruction procedures. Some are done at the time of the mastectomy, while others are done later. Talk to your surgeon in depth about what is right for you.
Disadvantages with breast cancer reconstruction include: • risk of infection • development of scar tissue • leaking or breaking (implant failure)

It takes the strength of a woman to realize the power of a mammogram. SURGERY
• Some women are just more comfortable not wearing either a breast form or a prosthesis (going flat). RECONSTRUCTION
This means that rebuilding is started later, after the cancer surgery is done. For this type of reconstruction, a short-term tissue expander is placed during the mastectomy to help prepare for reconstruction surgery later. The expander is a balloon-like sac that starts off flat and is slowly expanded to the desired size to allow the skin to stretch. The expander will be replaced by the implant. w

MARIANNE UMPHLETT, speech language pathologist, has been on a mission of service her entire life. Her interest in communication began early; her family enjoys relaying that Marianne taught her brother to read when he was just 4, a rather remarkable feat for a 10-year-old sister!
“I think I always knew I wanted to work with people and somehow be in a helping profession,” Marianne says. “As an anxious teenager, I prayed so hard for
God to show me what my purpose and career calling should be.”

Part of her process with discovering where her talents were most suited included a close-up look at healthcare providers in her hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina. “In high school I took health occupations both my junior and senior years,” Marianne explains, “and as a senior we were assigned mini-internships in various healthcare fields. Our teacher, an amazing Army nurse, told us about an opportunity to work in the speech and hearing clinic at our local hospital. I had never heard of the profession before and was openminded to what that might entail.” The opportunity to be onsite in a clinical setting proved to be no less than inspiring. While working and observing at the clinic, Marianne saw the audiologist provide hearing assessments of toddlers and she was in awe. She then got to observe speech therapy sessions with adults and young children at which time Marianne became even more fascinated with the field. By the time the internship ended, Marianne's career path felt certain. She earned her undergraduate degree in communication sciences and disorders at Appalachian State University and then her master’s in speech language pathology (with a minor in audiology) from the University of South Carolina.
After graduation, Marianne and her soon-to-be husband, Kevin, decided to look for career opportunities in Charlotte. “Kevin and I were high school sweethearts and after many years of long-distance dating in college, we were married in 1987 and both landed jobs in Charlotte,” she shares. “We discovered Lake Norman quickly and bought a very old sailboat … we called it The Spirit of 1976 keeping it docked at the old Outrigger marina and campground that is now known as the Peninsula Yacht Club. We decided to move to Lake Norman and built our home in 1994 and have been here ever since.” In 2009, armed with more than two decades of clinical experience in hospitals, outpatient settings, home health, and management of rehabilitation services, Marianne made a bold move and opened her own practice, LKN SpeechLanguage Pathology. This gave her the opportunity to not only serve her community, but to share her philosophy of work-life balance with other professionals who joined her practice.
Be intentional, and when you can share your vulnerabilities there will be others who can support you. You are not alone!

“I am proud of the courage I had to start my own business,” Marianne says, “and that we have stayed true to our mission of creating strong relationships with the families that we serve. We do what we believe is right, both clinically and ethically, while taking time to really get to know our families and clients. I am so proud of our team and feel they are some of the absolute finest speech language pathologists. I’m not sure how I got to be so lucky … it humbles me, and I am always grateful.” Gratitude and a strong faith have been the cornerstones in Marianne’s personal as well as professional life. She and Kevin have two children, Sarah and Will, both college students. The couple have been committed to making sure their family is a priority. “I’ve always done my best to keep family first, and it's one of the reasons I started my own private practice,” Marianne says. “I wanted to do it the way I felt was best and make a difference in the lives of others while at the same time keeping the balance of family time. I do my best to promote this with my staff and show that family,
We do what we believe is right, both clinically and ethically, while taking time to really get to know our families and clients. work, and your own health are the investments that deserve equal time. There are seasons and phases of life that throw things off at times, but that’s when you must step back and re-group and re-set priorities.” Part of Marianne's journey through the seasons of life includes that both she and Kevin are cancer survivors. These healthcare challenges called upon her deep faith and expanded her understanding of both gratitude and service. She is quick to emphasize that there can be blessings in life's difficult situations—often through the kindness, love, and support of those around us. “You don’t have to have a cancer diagnosis to see the support and
love around you,” Marianne advises. “Be intentional, and when you can share your vulnerabilities there will be others who can support you. You are not alone! It is true that there are blessings in tragedies and messes, and these are the things that stretch you and make you stronger if you allow them to. The information and noise in our world today are so loud and can be all-consuming. It’s healthy to get away from all of that and focus on the here and now … have faith and a positive attitude. As one of my favorite pastors, Jody Seymour, said: In life you are either dealing with a current challenge, coming out of a challenge, or about to face a new challenge. It’s your attitude, your relationship with God and those around you that make the difference. We all have the power to choose.” w

what
is permanent makeup, PERMANENT MAKEUP is a
popular and growing cosmetic technique which implants pigment into the skin to resemble makeup such as eyebrows and eyeliner, as well as adding other enhancing colors to the lips and face. In the beginning, those who made permanent makeup (especially eyebrows) popular were actresses and fashion models. Now, everyday women are getting permanent makeup and cosmetic tattoos. The most popular form of permanent makeup is microblading, which originated at least 25 years ago in Asia and has been growing in popularity in the United States and Europe throughout the past decade. It is a detailed service that creates hair-like strokes to result in fuller and more symmetrical eyebrows. It made me smile large when Kristi sent me this message … I am so blessed to work in an industry I love and to help women such as Kristi feel like the beautiful person (and Warrior!) they are:

can it benefit,
With eyebrows being the most important feature that frames the face, microblading continues to be a growing trend and “must-have” in the beauty world. The tiny, feather-like strokes heal to a soft and very natural looking set of eyebrows. Before developing better techniques, eyebrows were tattooed on women’s faces with tattoo ink—which actually changes color over time. The pigment used now for permanent makeup will not change colors or shift in the skin over time. The eyebrows are measured and mapped out according to specific facial structure and features, so it is proportionate to each individual’s face. There is little to no pain in permanent makeup and no down time for healing. There will be strict guidelines to adhere by following the service, including staying out of the sun and keeping the treatment area clean and moist. Most cosmetic tattoos will heal in ten days or less. Everyone can benefit from permanent makeup, especially those who have lost eyebrows and hair from chemotherapy, old age, or alopecia. It is also useful to
and

cover scars, white spots on the skin, or any other disturbances. Nobody’s face or features are perfectly symmetrical, but permanent makeup helps correct asymmetry and enhances natural color and shape. It is great for those looking for an easier makeup routine that is less time consuming … and with the price of cosmetics these days, it saves money too! Most women feel more confident and comfortable with makeup on. Due to medical reasons, convenience, and cosmetic desires, permanent makeup is a service that more and more women can embrace. Through fuller eyebrows, brighter lips, and eyes that pop, women’s natural features can shine through … with or without makeup! w LKN EXPERT

Most people are very aware that brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day are very important in fighting both cavities and gum disease. Almost all of us brush regularly, and we know statistically about 25% of everyone flosses daily … moving on!
IT’S FUN TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT all the options you
have for a smile makeover with porcelain veneers or moving your teeth into perfect alignment with clear aligners. But often the most important conversation we have is discussing the many possible reasons people are still getting cavities as adults. Over 90% of adults aged 2064 have had cavities develop in their permanent teeth.

What we coat our teeth with everyday has a big impact. Most people know that more sugar equals more cavities. Many people really watch their sugar intake and still get cavities! This is where it gets interesting. Exposure to acids is the factor many don’t consider. Many foods, drinks, and candy are flavored with acids. Citric acid is very common and one of the worst for teeth. Many diet drinks and flavored waters have significant amounts of citric acid. Even though they may have no sugar, they will soften your enamel and allow small amounts of sugar to cause cavities. This is why citrus flavor drinks, citrus fruit, and sour candy are so bad for your teeth if allowed with enough frequency. Unfortunately, not even diet drinks are tooth-friendly. Fortunately, if you take some proactive steps in reducing your risk with any or all of these factors, you should get less cavities. Teeth can handle quite a lot, and everyone has a different tipping point. The important thing is trying to stay below yours! w

We know how busy life can get—kids, work, family, friends … sometimes just getting dinner on the table is a Herculean feat! So in an effort to save our readers some time, effort, and money here are a few tips, tricks, and hacks that might come in handy in your busy world!
CHILLIN’ …
PAMPER YOUR PEEPERS!
Soak a hand towel in water, spray it with lavender, and chill it in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes before you get into your bubble bath or faux steam room. Once you’re ready to relax, grab your chilled towel and place it over your face and breathe in while your worries melt away.
Try slices of cucumber, soaked green tea bags, or slices of potatoes. The tea’s caffeine will help constrict the appearance of blood vessels and the antioxidants will reduce inflammation. Potatoes and cucumbers are also a natural way to reduce puffiness and swelling.
TIPS, SET THE TONE.
AHHH … STEAMY!
& HACKS
Run your shower as hot as possible (with all the doors closed) for a few extra minutes before getting into your bubble bath. Also, tie a bouquet of eucalyptus around your shower head to really bring in the natural spa energy and aroma.

WHAT’S YOUR POUR?
EASY FACIALS.
To really make it feel spa-inspired, make some infused “spa waters.” Flavoring a pitcher of water with strawberries and mint, citrus and cucumbers, or berries will make your experience more luxurious and help keep you hydrated! Of course a nice glass of wine is très bien as is a nice cup of hot tea—try chamomile, mint, or lavender tea for ultimate relaxation.
Mash half a ripe banana with honey and baking soda. When the ingredients are well-mixed, gently apply it to your face. The mask might feel runny at first, but it should dry quickly. Let the mask sit for at least 10 minutes before washing it off.

exterior painting service, Spray-Net offers a 15-year no-peel warranty. That’s almost unheard of in the painting industry. Spray-Net can offer this warranty because they manufacture their own specially formulated paint. To provide you with superior durability and a flawless finish, Spray-Net formulated a polyurethane paint for kitchen and bathroom cabinets that combines the best of all worlds: • the adhesion of a soft alkyd • the flexibility of urethane • the hardness of a polyurethane

efinishing your kitchen and bathroom cabinets is one the most cost-effective ways to update your home and boost your home’s value. After all, you know what they say, “Kitchens and bathrooms sell homes.” Now, Spray-Net offers you a way to easily transform the look of your kitchen and bathrooms without having to spend a ton of money on replacing your cabinets or live through a disruptive remodel. Whether you want cabinets in the popular color of Chantilly Lace or a trendy choice like Hale Navy, or maybe you want to paint your island one color and other cabinets another color, Spray-Net can make your dream come true.
Here’s more good news: It can take Spray-Net as little as one day to transform your cabinets. Spray-Net’s cabinet painting process is so unique that it’s been featured on HGTV and endorsed by Sarah Richardson, TV personality and one of the leading interior designers in North America. You can head to their website to check out the range of colors offered for cabinets (custom colors are always an option, too) and try out the Visualizer to imagine what your kitchen cabinets would look like updated with Spray-Net. The best part is the price will blow you away. Just like its
This formula makes the Spray-Net coating flexible enough to avoid cracking, hard enough to avoid chipping, smooth enough to wash easily and tough enough to block stains. Their paints come in a low toxicity, waterbased formulation that conforms to Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association standards. The result is a seamless factoryquality looking finish that will have your friends asking you where you bought your “brand new” cabinets.
“I am just beyond thrilled! My favorite thing about Spray-Net was the guarantee. No chipping, peeling, fading… you just can’t beat that!” – Jaclyn Colville, Interior Designer
Spray-Net’s founder and President Carmelo Marsala explains: “Using our proprietary line of industrial-strength coatings and patented application processes, we renew and transform existing surfaces that most people think can’t be painted but, instead, replaced. We revamp and transform stucco, brick, aluminum, and vinyl siding, front and garage doors, aluminum, and vinyl windows, and even kitchen cabinets. In just one day, we deliver a permanent factory finish that won’t peel and that looks just like new, not repainted. We’ve taken the process of factory painting and optimized it for application outside the controlled environment of the factory." By bringing factory results directly on-site, we give property owners a real alternative to replacement. The cost of our solution is immediately outweighed by the increase of curb appeal and overall property value. Unlike some renovations that don’t pay off, our solution allows property owners to see a return on their investment. Whether it's inside or out, faded, outdated and in need of a spruceup. Spray-Net asks you to Rethink Renovation.
BEFORE Local Spray-Net Franchise owner John Mckeown is excited about helping homeowners throughout the entire Charlotte area find a high-quality and cost-effective solution to transform and update their homes. “While we offer a unique solution customer service is our true passion. The smile on our customers’ faces after they see their home for the first time is what drives and inspires us.”

she can make her work truly meaningful. “By making other people’s lives better, I get way more than any bank account can hold,” she asserts. Even though she initially intended Elizabeth Leigh (named after her daughters) to serve as an “easy” extra income stream for her family, the boutique has become Tammi’s magnum opus when it comes to social responsibility. She combined her love for boho-inspired goods with her passion for the environment and economic equality to create a business that prioritizes handmade items from independent partners across the globe who share Tammi’s ethos of valuing people, respecting the earth, and doing good whenever possible. “I wanted to do more than just sell things,” Tammi explains. “I wanted to accelerate positive change through the power of shopping!” One of the ways Tammi accomplishes positive change is by handpicking the artisans who create the unique items she sells—artisans who themselves are effecting positive change. Take, for example, her partnerships with Jungle Culture and Strings for Hope. Jungle Culture works with artisans in Vietnam to provide high-quality, handmade products that reduce the consumption of single-use plastics, while Strings for Hope utilizes musical strings donated by Nashville musicians to provide second chances for survivors of addiction, domestic violence, and sex trafficking. In addition to these purposeful partnerships, Tammi donates ten percent of sales to nonprofit organizations, proving that doing good is always possible.

As the savvy business owner of both Blarney Stone Marketing & Design and her new venture, Elizabeth Leigh Online Boutique, Tammi is keenly aware that earning a living requires keeping her businesses profitable. However, as a social entrepreneur—a management style that combines a for-profit business model with sustainability and goodwill— she also firmly believes that it is only by giving back that

What isn’t always possible for Tammi is enough down time. She deals with the busyness trap by being intentional in carving out family time whenever she can. That’s not always easy with a teenager and a preteen at home who are spreading their own wings more and more, so Tammi prioritizes stepping away from work and connecting with them, whether through a weekend getaway or just an afternoon shopping. “It somehow balances out, so I just have to remind myself during stressful times that this too shall pass,” she says.

Tammi channels that same persistence and faith when it comes to her businesses, too. Like most entrepreneurs, even though she spends a great deal of time honing her mission and planning out her growth strategies, Tammi has moments when she wonders if she’s on the right track. At those times, she reminds herself that it will all come together: “Things may not always work out perfectly, she notes,” but they do work out. You just can’t give up. The end result may look different, but it doesn’t mean you failed. It just means you adjusted the path!” w

Core Values are the motivation for behavior. An intrinsic motivation is the act of doing something without any obvious external rewards. You take action on a core value because it is enjoyable and interesting, rather than reacting to an outside incentive or pressure, such as a reward or deadline.
WHY
An amazing example of living out a core value is Martin Luther King, Jr. He lived and died for freedom. He declares in his famous Washington, DC, speech in the first sentence, “I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.” He goes on to repeat the word freedom twenty times. He is clear on his core value. His impact was immeasurable!
W H Y D O YO U D O W H AT YO U D O ?
At your core, you value certain ideals that shape how you believe life must be lived. My aim is to help you consciously see, claim, and act on these core values. Left dormant without conscious ownership, your core values may become inconsequential. This means that while they are in you they are not producing an effect that creates an impact. One of my core values is possibilities. I believe at my core that possibilities exist at every turn. That humans have potential to do much more than they realize. You cannot convince me that a human life cannot make a positive impact by simply seeing what is possible and taking action to make it probable. If you value love, if you own the core value of love, then you behave in ways that make love a reality. It is simple.

My favorite example of living a vibrant life through knowing your “why” is Ann Starrette. Ann, my mentor, has the core value of providing sacred space for others to tend their soul. Notice, notice, notice that while Martin had a broad and big core value, Ann’s core value is specific, detailed, and focused. Ann owns a retreat center in Statesville (Starrette Farm) where people can tend their souls, gain peace, and discover their “Why.” w As principal coach and CEO of Vibrant Coaching and Consulting, IncTM, Nicole Greer helps individuals, corporations, government, faithbased organizations, and non-profits become the people they were created to be through fulfilling a mission, to work in teams, and exemplify VIBRANT LeadershipTM.
