Jardín de Lava Pedregal’s Lava garden

La inspiración del Jardín de Lava proviene del suelo donde se ubica. El paisaje rocoso formado tras la erupción del volcán Xitle hace más de 2,500 años da el nombre a El Pedregal; una colonia residencial modernista imaginada por Diego Rivera y desarrollada en los años 40 por el arquitecto Luis Barragán, quien buscó crear, a través de sus jardines, espacios de retiro y meditación para disfrutar de la naturaleza del paisaje de roca volcánica. Hoy en día, la mayoría de los jardines ha olvidado su relación con el antiguo terreno, al remover la capa de lava volcánica o recubrirla con nueva tierra para instalar amplias y planas áreas de pasto. En el contexto de la pandemia de COVID-19, con la revalorización de los espacios exteriores, Estudio Ome fue invitado a reimaginar y retransformar este jardín.

The inspiration for the Lava Garden comes from the soil where it is located. The rocky landscape formed after the eruption of the Xitle volcano more than 2,500 years ago gives El Pedregal its name; a modernist residential neighborhood imagined by Diego Rivera and developed in the 40s by the architect Luis Barragán, who sought to create, through their gardens, spaces for retreat and meditation to enjoy the nature of the volcanic rock landscape. Today, most gardens have forgotten their relationship to the old terrain, removing the layer of volcanic lava or covering it with new soil to install large, flat areas of grass. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the revaluation of outdoor spaces, Estudio Ome was invited to re-imagine and re-transform this garden.

El proyecto comenzó con el deseo de trabajar con la oscura y porosa piedra. El reto fue el de encontrar el balance perfecto entre lo construido y lo vivo, desde la composición de elementos geométricos en contraste con un patrón orgánico de vegetación. Las líneas rectas definen tres variaciones de caminos desde los más amplios y cómodos hasta los más angostos y discretos. Dos rectángulos crean nuevos usos del jardín, uno es un huerto, y el otro funciona como sala exterior rodeada de vegetación exuberante. En la sala ubicamos el círculo, que acumula agua dentro una piedra volcánica tallada para los pájaros, la humedad y la posibilidad de plantas acuáticas. Trajimos nuevamente la piedra volcánica a este sitio en forma de bloques de recinto, que se consiguen fácilmente en la ciudad, para el nuevo suelo. La geometría del plan maestro se construye como plataformas elevadas e independientes que parecen flotar entre la vegetación.

The project began with the desire to work with the dark and porous stone. The challenge was to find the perfect balance between the built and the living from the composition of geometric elements in contrast to an organic pattern of vegetation. The straight lines define three variations of paths from the widest and most comfortable to the narrowest and most discreet. Two rectangles create new uses for the garden, one is an orchard, and the other works as an outdoor room surrounded by exuberant vegetation. In the room we locate the circle, which accumulates water inside a carved volcanic stone for birds, humidity and the possibility of aquatic plants. We brought the volcanic stone back to this site in the form of enclosure blocks, which are readily available in the city, for the new soil. The geometry of the master plan is built as free-standing elevated platforms that seem to float among the vegetation.

Utilizamos dos tamaños distintos para los pavimentos, los caminos más amplios utilizan el bloque chico y los caminos más angostos el grande, para generar una ilusión de escala con las grandes hojas de las plantas. La sutileza en estos detalles busca tener un efecto en el ritmo y la atención al caminar, para tener un recorrido de meditación y contemplación mientras se descubren discretas veredas o íntimas plataformas. Bajo la estructura de los árboles existentes, definimos la ubicación de las nuevas especies en tres diferentes áreas entre la luz y la sombra. Los árboles cítricos y frutales aportan además una escala de cercanía alcanzable. El huerto extiende el tiempo de estancia en el jardín con su invitación a la experimentación. Al enriquecer la experiencia y dar nuevos usos al jardín, observar y oler los árboles frutales, cosechar las hierbas aromáticas y los arbustos medicinales… los límites del jardín pueden desaparecer.

We used two different sizes for the pavements, the wider paths use the small block and the narrower paths use the large block, to generate an illusion of scale with the large leaves of the plants. The subtlety in these details seeks to have an effect on the rhythm and attention when walking in order to have a meditative and contemplative journey while discovering discreet paths or intimate platforms. Under the structure of the existing trees, we define the location of the new species in three different areas between light and shade. Citrus and fruit trees also provide an achievable scale of closeness. The orchard extends the time spent in the garden with its invitation to experimentation. By enriching the experience and giving the garden new uses, observing and smelling the fruit trees, harvesting the aromatic herbs and medicinal shrubs… the limits of the garden can disappear.
