The 2023 Budget numbers don’t lie

.In 2015 the Palaszczuk Labor Government watered down our laws and now Queensland is the car theft capital of Australia.

Presently, figures show that about 55 cars are being stolen in Queensland every day. The Crime Crisis is impacting community safety and driving up the cost of living.

The Palaszczuk Labor Government is in a constant state of chaos and crisis and they’re refusing to listen to Queenslanders calling for change.

It’s time to put the rights of victims before offenders, remove detention as a last resort and for goldstandard early intervention.

Whilst the state parliament extended a trial of the GPS tracking devices by two years to 2025 and dropped the minimum age of participants to 15. At this time only 13 juvenile reoffenders have been fitted with the devices as part of their bail conditions.

It’s time to make our communities safe again.

To summarise my thoughts on the 2023 - 2024 Queensland budget

It has not done anything for youth crime

It has not created any new social housing

I do acknowledge and welcome the announcements around free kindergarten and swimming lessons

There is no funding for the Pioneer-Burdekin Dam - a fundamental component of the government's energy and jobs announcement

Not a lot to show for the extra $60 BILLION of revenue seems the government has received

There is no funding for problematic roads in the electorate of Glass House.

Coalition observations of the Federal 2023 -2024 budget

In the opposition reply to the 2023 - 2024 Australian budget

I'm calling for a DiggerBill for veterans' education - a #GIBill for modern Australia. The original Digger Bill was signed on June 22, 1944 by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt which gave returning servicemen access to unemployment compensation, lowinterest home and business loans, and—most importantly—funding for education.

The G.I. Bill became one of the major forces that drove an economic expansion in America that lasted 30 years after World War II.

Labor have repeatedly slashed funding for this kind of thing. It's not good enough.

I'm fighting for a DiggerBill to bridge the gap and give back to those who've given so much to

Rate changes at a glance

On June 22nd the Sunshine Coast Council has announced the 2023 - 2024 budget. This year the budget will pass the ONE Billion dollar mark and there have been rate increases across the board in spite of the present cost-of-living crisis which local residents are facing.

A schedule of rates as is hereunder are:

Rates for the owner-occupiers on the minimum general rate – the majority of residential properties – will increase by $74 ($1.42 per week) to $1,406.50 per annum - a 5.55% rise

The environment levy will increase by $2 to $82

The Transport Levy will increase by $2 to $47

The Arts and Heritage Levy will increase by $2 to $18

A 240 litre wheelie bin service charge will increase by $27.60 to $360.30.

Overall, rates and charges for the majority of owner occupiers on the

minimum general rate will increase by $107.60 to $1913.80 - or 5.96%

All eligible pensioners will benefit from a 7% increase in their pensioner rate concession.

Sole homeowners on full pensions will receive a $290 annual concession (up from $271 in 2022-23) and those with joint title to the property will receive a maximum of $227 per annum (up from $212).

Those on part pensions will also benefit, with their annual concession increasing to maximums of $145 and $83 (single and joint title), increasing from $136 and $77 last financial year.

Whilst some owner. occupiers will pay an annual rate cost of $1930.80 the majority of owner-occupiers will remain on the minimum general rate of $1,406.50 per annum – an increase of $74 per annum or $1.42 per week.

Included in the budget is $1.3 million to continue work on Maleny Business Centre Streetscape works in Maple Street.

My key priorities are to keep our division connected on our country roads which is why this budget delivers on gravel road upgrades, lane widening, intersection upgrades and pedestrian improvements to several roads.

New Welcome Sign to Maleny

The Sunshine Coast Council is to locate a new welcome sign soon to greet motorists visiting Maleny. It will be located near the intersection of Landsborough Road and McCarthys Road. . Much thought has been given to the custom design for the sign, ensuring it reflects the features of our town, including:

A weathered steel sign that incorporates a silhouette of the Glass House Mountains, as viewed from Mountain View Road.

Timber pillars that celebrate the original forested vegetation of the Maleny plateau.

Locally sourced basalt stone cladding reflecting the geology of the range, and landscaping that includes locally occurring plant species.

A planting area at the base of the sign, in keeping with the lush surrounds.

Works are scheduled to start on August 1st, 2023, and be completed by mid-September, weather and site conditions permitting.

When is a “Burger not a Burger”?

Australia is about to join the emerging lab-grown meat industry, which so far has been dominated by food-tech start-ups in Europe, Israel and California's Silicon Valley. There is a plan to have cultured meat on Australian shelves as soon as 2024 and this is close to becoming a reality. Australia's first application to sell cultured meat is from cell-based meat. This is not the same as plant-based meat which is produced from plant sources such as soy, pea, fungi, wheat and rice. Initially it is expected that cultured meat patties suitable for burgers will initially sell for $5 to $6. The same technology will lead to a cell-based pork and lamb meat substitute.

Why you need an Air Purifier in Australia

Air pollution is a pressing global issue, including here in Australia and it's not limited to the outdoors. The EPA states that indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Air purifiers help combat this by filtering out pollutants, allergens, and other harmful particles, creating a cleaner and healthier environment both at home and at work.

Air purifiers eliminate common allergens like dust, pollen, and pet dander, which are typical triggers for allergy flair-ups.

Air purifiers can help minimise the spread of airborne illnesses by capturing bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens.

Queensland teens who grew up in the late 1950 an through the 1960’s generally believe that they lived in an exciting decade as everything was changing at a rapid pace and a new style of living was quickly overtaking the post World War 11 style of living with its austerity and conformity.

Queensland Teenagers Growing Up in the 1960’s started a life journey of Social Change and Cultural Revolution. It really was a time of significant change for all of Australia’s population as Australia began to change to embrace world globalisation. This was a decade of major changes to the Australian society.

The 1960s was a transformative decade, globally marked by social, political, and cultural changes. In Queensland, teenagers growing up during this era experienced a unique blend of traditional values and the emerging influences of a rapidly changing world. This essay explores the experiences of Queensland teenagers in the 1960s, highlighting the societal shifts, cultural revolution, and significant events that shaped their coming of age. For many it was still a childhood life full of strict discipline, ignorance about gender roles and sex.

It's difficult to emphasise the importance of radio in our young lives in the pre-television days of the early 1960’s in the Queensland regional areas. Whilst television sets went on sale in Queensland on July 1, 1959 for the first time they were in Brisbane only and were seen as a luxury item only!

world. The impact of the Beat Generation, the rise of rock 'n' roll, and the counterculture movement from the United States and Europe ficantly influenced young people's attitudes, fashion, and music preferences. The rebellious spirit of icons like Elvis Presley and the Beatles provided an avenue for selfexpression and challenged traditional norms. Whilst the 1960’s teens took to Elvis Presley, or “Elvis the Pelvis” as he was known because of his gyrating stage actions, their parents were not amused.

The decade saw the birth of the civil rights movement, greater moves towards equality for women in the workplace and the beginnings of legal recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Queensland teenagers were witnesses to a remarkable shift in societal values and norms. They began questioning authority, challenging traditional gender roles, and embracing progressive ideologies. Teenagers became more politically aware, participating

in civil rights movements and advocating for social justice. The Vietnam War and its antiwar protests were prominent issues that sparked passionate debates and fuelled activism among young Queenslanders.

1. Changing Fashion and Personal Style in the 1960s saw Queensland teenagers adopted new fashion trends that reflected the evolving cultural landscape. Young people gravitated towards bold, colourful clothing, rejecting the conservative styles of their parents' generation. Mod fashion, characterised by miniskirts, go-go boots, and geometric patterns, became increasingly popular. Queensland teenagers embraced these trends as symbols of rebellion and liberation.

2. The Emergence of Youth Subcultures saw teenagers in Queensland finding solace and identity in various subcultures that emerged during the 1960s. The surf culture, with its emphasis on sun, sand, and music, held a significant influence. Surfing became more than just a sport; it encompassed a way of life, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among young people. Other subcultures, such as the hippies and the bikers, emerged as alternatives to mainstream society, offering alternative ideologies and lifestyles.

4. The British Invasion, led by bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, left an indelible mark on Queensland's youth culture, inspiring a generation to pick up instruments and form their own bands.

5. As Queensland teenagers grew up in the 1960s, education and career opportunities expanded. The Baby Boomer generation, which included many teenagers at the time, benefitted from increased access to higher education and vocational training.

6. As a result, more young people aspired to pursue professions beyond traditional trades, seeking intellectual and creative pursuits.

Queensland teenagers growing up in the 1960s witnessed a remarkable era of social change, cultural revolution, and personal transformation. The global influences of the time, combined with local experiences, shaped their coming of age and challenged the status quo. The decade's impact can still be felt in the generations that followed, as the Queensland teenagers of the 1960s embraced new ideas, expanded their horizons, and set the stage for the progressive society that exists today.

The sexual revolution was fuelled by a number of social and cultural factors, including the women's liberation movement and the widespread availability of the birth control pill and medicine to treat venereal diseases, which contributed to changing attitudes about casual sex!

It was the decade when TVs really arrived on the scene, men landed on the Moon, and we changed to decimal currency. What an era of changes to be a part of.

3. The 1960s witnessed a boom in entertainment and popular culture, providing Queensland teenagers with an array of new experiences. Drive-in theatres, music festivals, and live concerts became popular venues for socialising and enjoying shared interests.

Many of those who grew up in the 1960’s, whilst they themselves do not think of themselves as being old would get a shock today when their my grand kids tell them that they are old and get asked the question: “What was it like being a kid back in the olden days?”

Growing up as a child in the 1960’s was magical!

Be prepared for a home fire by having an escape plan

Winter time is a time of year when there are more fires in homes than other parts of the year. In homes where there is a “well-known” fire plan there is much more chance of the family escaping.

If fire breaks out in your home, it’s too late then to plan your escape. Think ahead and plan how you will get out

It is not enough to actually have a fire plan and each member of the family does not know about it. Practise your escape plan at night with the lights on, and then with the lights off. Distance can be hard to judge in the dark, and heavy smoke can make it difficult to find your way out.

Find two ways to get out of each room - there always should be two ways, through the door or through the window. Leave keys in a safe spot, near the door or window, and ensure everyone in the house knows where they are and can reach them.

Remember you need to get down low and crawl to avoid the smoke. As soon as each person is out of the house go to a pre-designated point so that a check can be made to ensure that everyone is out.

Apart from having a plan it is most important to have working fire alarms and they should be checked that they are working correctly on a regular basis.

Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

The Palaszczuk government has spent $423m on contracts with the “big four” consulting firms in the past five years –about $234,000 a day to complete reviews and give advice to Queensland government departments on how to complete government projects. This was work that in the past was handled within the public service thus saving huge amounts of. money on private consultancies.

In spite of the big increase in the costs of private consultancies the number of middle ranked public service, those who normally did those tasks did not fall, in fact those numbers continued to increase. This means that the Queensland taxpayers were in reality paying for that work at least twice as much as they should have. That resulted in the big four consultancy groups operating in Queensland – KPMG, EY, PwC and Deloitte swimming in buckets of taxpayer’s money. Queensland’s public sector grew by nearly 45,000 since early 2015 and in the 2023 budget it will grow by almost 5000 within the next 12 months. Also there will be a 11% wage rise over 3 years.

Approximately $2 in every $5 in Queensland’s budget goes in public servant wages alone which equates to almost $30 billion a year.

At the present time there are at least 1067 media and marketing staff work across the state government. In the Premier’s office there are up to 30 journalists reporting directly to her with a further 18 fulltime-equivalent media staff which includes content, graphics artists, camera and video operators and special projects staff, fully equipped with specialist broadcast and professional graphic producing equipment also reporting directly to her.

This is more in number than employed by Queensland’s major daily newspaper. Mostly those journalists exist to keep watch over and protect the Premier’s back against information that would be detrimental to how the public sees any media about how the government is being perceived by the people of Queensland.

Daily the TV show “Yes Minister” becomes more of a reality when it is compared to the actions of the present Queensland Government. It is important that the number of “bean counters and media personnel” are radically reduced and the number of front line people such as doctors, nurses, ambulance officers and police increased The number of frontline workers such as police and disability workers in the state’s public sector has fallen to the lowest level in at least the past three years. Figures show that police numbers in 2020 stood at 11979 but in June 2023 stood at 11907.

The Queensland population as of 01.06.23 is 5.316 million. At the same time the Queensland population is growing at about 104,000 people each and every year since 2020 making the state the home to 1 in every 5 Australians. Are Queenslanders getting “enough bang for the buck”?.

Truthful’s neighbour

Paddy feared his wife Mary wasn’t hearing as well as she used to and thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family doctor to discuss the problem. The doctor told him there is a simple informal test that paddy could perform to give the doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. Here’s what you do said the doctor, stand about 40 feet away from her and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not go to 30 feet away and then 20 feet and so on until you get a response. Later that day when Paddy gets home from the pub he sees Mary in the kitchen cooking dinner and he was in the hallway. He thinks to himself I’m about 40 feet away let’s see what happens. In a normal tone, he asks “Mary what’s for dinner my lovely?” No response so he moves closer 30 feet he says” Mary what’s for feckin dinner ?”. Still no response. He moves closer about 20 feet. “Mary, for Christ’s sake can ye be telling me what’s for dinner ?” Still nothing and again at 10 feet still nothing. So he walks up behind her and says Mary, can you tell me what’s for dinner?

She replied, FOR F*** SAKE PADDY FOR THE FIFTH TIME CHICKEN!!!

Morale. “Never underestimate just how much your wife sees and hears. It could be your downfall!!!

Selling or buying a property!

Don’t be alarmed!

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

The new year has brought with it numerous changes in the law around real estate sales in Queensland, not the least of which involve utterly essential smoke alarms.

For example, the new laws state that smoke alarms must: be installed in each bedroom; on each storey of a house and in hallways which connect bedrooms to the rest of the house; be photoelectric and comply with AS 3786-2014; be powered by either 240 volt or a 10-year lithium battery; and be interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the house so they all activate together.

Smoke alarms must meet these requirements prior to the contract being signed and if the

seller doesn’t comply, the buyer is entitled to an adjustment (read penalty) at settlement equal to 0.15% of the purchase price

If the seller has not complied after settlement, the buyer must install compliant smoke alarms. With so many new laws to adhere to, it is recommended that sellers use a professional smoke alarm provider to upgrade the smoke alarms in their properties.

We strongly recommended sellers book their properties in for a smoke alarm upgrade when listing their properties for sale as they are competing for available smoke alarm providers, with hundreds of rental properties that also need to comply with the new 2022 laws.

Since the 1st January 2022 all rental properties must comply with the new law at

commencement of a new lease or a lease renewal.

Research suggests only 50% of Queensland rentals are currently compliant, creating a wait time of four to six weeks for a smoke alarm upgrade according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ).

Australian-made

On-grid and off-grid energy storage systems

RedEarth Energy Storage is a proud sponsor of The Block 2022

RedEarth Energy Storage chief technology officer Chris Winter designed RedEarth’s BlackMax Power System, available from 3.3 to 12kWh, for off-grid systems, expecting it would be put to use in sheds or small applications. “Then people started using them for running their homes,” he says. “I didn’t realise there were so many homes running off truck batteries. We had to increase the size. Now it’s one of our most popular products.”

The system, which comes with PV panels, is the only Australianmade off-grid system to have made the Clean Energy Council’s approved products list. The company’s other off-grid solutions include the Honey Badger, up to 26.4kWh, and the Drop Bear, up to 65kWh.

Sizing storage for a low-load, off-grid application takes finesse. If you run out of power, you’re left in the dark. Many owners will reply on a small diesel generator, perhaps, “but if they’re careful – not running air-con and so on – [storage] works really well”.

The company uses lithium iron phosphate (or “LFP”) cells, which Winter says last a lot longer if charged and discharged over four hours, for example, than one hour. RedEarth’s Troppo battery comes with a 63-amp breaker, for 3kW capacity. “If you put a 5kW load on there after a short time that breaker is going to trip to protect everything,” he says. “You shouldn’t be running a battery that hard anyway. Just put a second battery in.”

Cells are sourced from manufacturers in China and there have been discussions with an operation looking to start out of Western Australia. RedEarth is not likely to switch to lithium-manganese-cobalt-oxide, or “NMC” technology, he says. Yes, the chemistry delivers higher energy density, but there have been fires. “It’s a big difference between different chemistries,” he says. “But in my mind I’m not going to use any other chemistry [but LFP]. There is just no point.”

The company has turned out about a thousand systems since kicking off in 2013, at around 10kWh per system.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”

“Back in Queensland” ….. continuing on with my mission!

One story I heard, especially at a time when there is so much juvenile crime being committed around our country touched me and I wish this project all success.

A former jackeroo in New South Wales north is mending more than just fences by taking in troubled teens and helping them turn their lives around.

This is such an amazing cause. To those in areas such as Townsville and Cairns, right across to Kunnunara in WA Youth crime is a huge issue. I’ve personally seen kids driving around me in stolen cars and seen them roaming the streets at night up to mischief. The fact that Bernie has taken the initiative to create BackTrack Youth Works and is giving it a go to solve this problem speaks volumes about the man and his organisation.

Youth crime affects us all in one way or another and it’s only with the help of organisations such as this that focus on rehabilitation rather than just locking kids up with their mates for a few weeks/months in Juvie(don’t get me wrong there are some really bad ones that should be locked up but it’s not a blanket solution), it’s only with men and women like this who are stepping in to create change do I think personally that we can really move forwards as a nation with Youth crime, especially in Rural areas. At BackTrack, one of their big focuses is preparing young people to transition into work, when the

time is right for them. This is a huge part of their journey towards lifelong independence. Well. I was at the Hatton Vale Show shaking the tins again when this great opportunity arose. I had flight in a Vietnam War vintage Huey Helicopter. Just how awesome is that?

All I’m hearing in my head is “Fortunate Son” playing on repeat , this is absolutely bloody incredible, this 1966 Vietnam Veteran Huey chopper run by Heli Biz is not only just a Warbird but is in immaculate flying condition.

The history of this aircraft really makes you think, especially doing low passes over the rainforest of Vietnam and of just how tough the veterans of Vietnam would have had it fighting in Jungle terrain.

We have to thank every one of them for doing their bit to keep Australia safe.

Maleny and the timber industry

The timber getters and their bullock teams that worked the big timber forests are long gone but they played an important part in the development of the early settlements. The timbermen were able to advise the settlers who followed them just where the best land was located for future farming pursuits.

Logged timber was either pit sawn and used locally, or shipped south for milling and export to overseas lands.

The bush men wielded axes and other tools of their trade like the cross cut saw, barking bar, maul and wedges and brush hook.

A good bullock was a valuable resource and two good leading bullocks were essential for the smooth operation of the team. Each bullock had a name and recognised it when spoken to Initially, the timber was transported to Coochin Creek then via Pumicestone Passage or by sea then by ship to overseas market.
