Juvenile Crime Is running “Out of Control”

Queensland Justice Department figures show that at least 85 per cent of Queensland’s most serious young criminals are reoffending within 12 months and the tally only continues to climb at an ever increasing rate, and offenders age is getting younger.

Queensland has been grappling with a persistent juvenile crime epidemic that has raised concerns among policymakers, law enforcement, and the community at large. The surge in juvenile crime rates has prompted widespread discussion on the root causes of this issue and the appropriate measures to address it.

Car theft is a significant problem and many of those stolen vehicles are involved in serious traffic accidents, many of which result in fatalities. These fatalities are placing huge emotional and financial costs on innocent Queensland families.

Frustrated police say hardcore kid committing serious are thumbing their noses at rehabilitation and the law as new data shows 449 youths are categorised as the most serious offenders in Queensland, responsible for the majority of youth crime across the state – up from 374 last year. The present soft juvenile justice system and the “opt in” rehab programs failing to turn around the state’s youth crime crisis. Of those, 319 went on to commit another crime within 12 months – a shocking 85 per cent reoffending rate based on the 2022 average.

Some factors contributing to the Juvenile Crime Epidemic, but not limited to include; Socioeconomic Disparities, Family Instability, Substance Abuse, Gang Involvement and Educational Disengagement.

These factors can push vulnerable youth toward criminal behaviour as a means of coping or gaining social acceptance.

The present soft approach to juvenile crime is not working and it is having detrimental effects on the living conditions of innocent law abiding people of Queensland.

Early intervention, community engagement, and educational reforms are key components of a comprehensive strategy to curb the juvenile crime epidemic and foster a brighter and more secure society for all.

Diversion programs should aim to steer young offenders away from the criminal justice system by offering counselling, education, and skill-building programs as alternatives to incarceration only.

Nothing should be ruled out in formulating an efficient program - just throwing money at the problem is not enough.

Joyce Newton’s Legacy lives on the hinterland

Mrs Joyce Newton, along with her husband Greg and her family were long time residents of Maleny. They came to Maleny who came to Maleny in the late 1970s. Joyce had been a teacher who was well versed in history and civics. Unfortunately she succumbed to motor neurone disease in October 2018.

During her time in Maleny she was instrumental in the original Maleny swimming pool and in finding a new home for the planned Indoor Aquatic Centre and Hydrotherapy Pool. She singlehandedly ran the Maleny Blood Bank at the Maleny hospital each month during the 1980s, served on the executive of the Maleny swimming club, soccer club, Girl Guides, state and high school P&C’s and was a key figure in the formation of a nursing mothers group and kindergarten in Maleny.

In her memory Member for Glass House Mr. Andrew Powell MP launched an annual bursary in memory of Joyce for Year 11 and 12 students who reside in the electorate of Glass House.

Mr. Powell MP has announced the 2023 Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary winner as Year 12 Beerwah Stage High School student, Nikita Emhofer.

Miss Emhofer has been crowned as this year’s winner after providing a written application and impressing both Mr Powell and the late Mrs Newton’s daughter, Jen Tunley, in an interview. She demonstrated a very high level of academic achievement, ambition and community involvement.

Nikita will receive a $1,000 voucher to spend at Concept IT in Maleny, as well as dinner for her and her family and acknowledgement of her achievement in Queensland Parliament.

Around the 1930’s the kitchen was one of the parts of the house that was normally the centre of entertainment and family life. Electrical goods and extra space were very sparse

But this year, the wins don’t stop there. Andrew and Jen Newton decided to award two runners up prizes of $500 vouchers to Kelly Schofield from Maleny State High School and Nina Taylor from St Columban’s College.

“In their interviews, both Kelly and Nina embodied a real community spirit that I know mum would have been proud of.” said Mrs Tunley.

“And to the other applicants who didn’t quite succeed this year, thank you for your efforts. Each of you are amazing. It was our immense pleasure to get to know you through the process. And our future is safe in your hands,” concluded Mr Powell.

New Council Procurement and Disposal Policy

The 2023-24 Procurement and Disposal Policy was endorsed by Council at its June 2023 Ordinary Meeting.

The 2023 - 2024 policy would continue to prioritise and support local businesses. It is important that council assists suppliers to win more work with council.

Maleny Show now on film

The Maleny Show has just passed 100 years of tradition and through wars, droughts and floods, this grand tradition has continued for a century. It has been an an event that survived and thrived over that time.

The film preserves an essential part of our Sunshine Coast heritage through the stories of these volunteers and captures the smells, sounds and sights of show time. It shares the stories and memories of many people closely involved with the show over the years including members of the Corkin and Hankinson families, Winston Johnston, Ed Lawley, Monica Skerman and Lois White.

From the excitement of the wood chop to prized cattle and champion sponge cakes or marmalades that used secret family recipes,

Now, the Maleny Show is one of Queensland’s proudest regional traditions. And those who made it great, feature in a special documentary film.

The film is an initiative of the Sunshine Coast Council Arts and Heritage Levy program.

Maleny Visitor Information Centre

The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for profit, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny flavour along with information about places and events around the area.

The Centre is situated at 2/23 Maple Street, Maleny. It is open 7 days a week between 9.30am-4.00pm. Closed only on Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Some Telstra Upgrades in Maleny area!

Following representations I made to Telstra last month regarding mobile reception in Maleny, I have been provided with information about upcoming upgrades in your area.

A project is underway to expand the 4G and 5G at the Maleny base station. These upgrades will commence 13 June 23 and may take up to two weeks to complete. The upgrades will require work to be carried out throughout daylight hours and technicians will need to turn off some sectors for the purposes of the upgrade.

Supreme Wax Polish Aftercare

Regular Cleaning

Surfaces treated with Fiddes Supreme Wax Polish can be dry wiped with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove surface dust. For minor surface stains, scuffs and marks, wipe with a slightly dampened (not wet) cloth with water and Fiddes Floor Surface Cleaner.

Maintenance

When maintaining pre-waxed wood it is advisable to use a clear wax (Fiddes have a very lightly tinted wax called 'Light' for paler, wood coloured surfaces and a wax with no pigment at all called 'Clear' for painted surfaces or for surfaces which require no colour change). Additional coats offer an improved patina and overall durability. Fresh wax coats can be applied annually or as required.

Repair

Coloured waxes are best used for repairing fine scratches, for example when a lighter shade is showing through. They are also used to change the colour of wood when the initial finishing process is done. The coloured waxes offer greater depth than the clear wax.

Baba, from Senegal had a kitchen accident at his home when he picked up the lid of a pot. Minutes later his hands and arms caught on fire, leaving him with burns so severe that he could no longer use his arm.

Two years later, in 2021, Baba enrolled in the Mercy Ships ‘Food for Life’ program. This program has trained more than 800 people in nine countries since 2007. The 22-week course covers sustainable agriculture and food processing, helping community members become independent growers and distributors of healthy, nutritional products. Today, he is capable of producing ginger syrup, yoghurt, and infantfeeding porridge to alleviate severe malnutrition issues in his community - all using natural resources.

He was used to manual labour as his family were peanut growers. After the accident, he was unsure how he would continue to work and take care of himself financially, let alone his family.

Baba was able to receive free reconstructive plastic surgery on board the “Africa Mercy” in 2019. After the operation, he regained the use of his arm and hand so that he could resume farming. He

Police warn about Sunshine Coast Scams

Police are warning members of the public to be vigilant after several people fell victim to a scam which appears to be targeting elderly residents. People claiming to be from their banking institutions call victims and advise them to withdraw money for a representative from the bank to collect in cash from their home address as an employee is emptying customer accounts internally.

The victims are told its to safeguard them, and the bank representative will deposit the cash in a safe account while internal investigations identify their own employee who is stealing.

Several people across southeast Queensland have already fallen victim to this heartless scam.

A man has since been charged with three counts of money laundering and one count possess tainted property and is due to appear in the Magistrates Court, Maroochydore on the 15th September, 2023..

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

A rich father who wanted his son to know what it was like to be poor brought him to live with a farming family for a few days.

The child stayed there for 3 days and 3 nights. Back in the car on their way to the town, his father asked him:

"And your experience?"

"Fine," replied the boy.

"Did you learn anything?"

The boy then explained:

"1 We have a dog and they have four of them.

2 We have a pool with treated water. They have a river with crystal clear water, fish and other good things

3 We have electric lights in our garden, but they have the stars and the moon to light them up.

4 Our garden extends to the fence. Theirs up to the horizon.

5 We buy our food; they cultivate, harvest and cook it.

6 We listen to CDs ... they hear a sustained symphony of birds, crickets and other animals ... ... all this, sometimes accompanied by the singing of a neighbour who works on the farm.

7 We use the microwave. What they cook tastes much better cooked on a slow fire.

8 We are surrounded by alarm fences to protect ourselves ... They live with open doors, protected by the friendship of their neighbours.

9 We are connected to the telephone, computer and television. They are in communion with life, sky, sun, water, fields, animals, friends and families. "

The father was impressed with his son's feelings. Then finally the son comes to the conclusion:

"Thanks for showing me how poor we are! Every day we get poorer because we no longer look at nature !!! “

Oh! how things in our lives have changed in the term of just one or two generations!

Truthful tells us that he knows a woman who decided to give herself a big treat for her 70th birthday by staying overnight in a really nice hotel.

When she checked out the next morning, the desk clerk handed her a bill for $250.00. She demanded to know why the charge was so high "I agree it's a nice hotel, but the rooms aren't worth $250.00 for just an overnight stay - I didn't even have breakfast!”

The clerk told her that $250.00 is the 'standard rate,' and breakfast had been included had she wanted it. She insisted on speaking to the Manager. The Manager appeared and, forewarned by the desk clerk, announced: "This hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference centre which are available for use.”

"But I didn't use them.”

'Well, they are here, and you could have." He went on to explain that she could also have seen one of the inhotel shows for which they were so famous. "We have the best entertainers from the world over performing here.”

"But I didn't go to any of those shows.”

"Well, we have them, and you could have.”

No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, she replied, "But I didn't use it!" and the Manager countered with his standard response.

After several minutes discussion, and with the Manager still unmoved, she decided to pay, wrote a check and gave it to him. The Manager was surprised when he looked at the check. "But Madam, this check is for only $50.00”

"That's correct I charged you $200.00 for sleeping with me.”

"But I didn't!" "Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have.” said the woman.

Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club The Chatty Cafe in Maleny - come and join us!

The Chatty Cafe is being held at the Maleny Library every Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 and provides locals with an opportunity for a cuppa and a chat with fellow Chatty Cafe guests and friendly volunteers.

Although this is a Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club initiative, we welcome anyone who has an hour a week to spare, to enjoy a chat with an interesting bunch of local residents. The excellent facilities of the Witta Recreation Club are available for hire for events such as weddings, sports days, family gatherings.

The club has a Certified Kitchen/Catering facilities including a stove, pots & pans, dishwasher, crockery and utensils. The Bushman’s Bar is practically fitted out with a large capacity for the cold storage of a range of beverages. The Bushman’s Bar is located at the core of the Witta Recreation Club. Service from the bar can be provided to customers on the covered hard standing overlooking the playing pitches, or directly into the Clubroom.

Arts Alive to take over Maple Street on August 4th

The Maleny Arts Alive event is being billed as a circus of the senses where everyone is invited to come and immerse themselves in the world-class talent event. Arts Alive Maleny will be held on August 4th and will feature lanterns, light shows, art projections, live music, street performances and art exhibitions. There is no central focus to Arts Alive, rather an atmosphere of many facets, colours and experiences, all happening at the same time.

Maleny Bowls Club Junior Academy

Since Saturday July 15th the Maleny Bowls Club are holding their third Junior Bowlers Academy. These free sessions will be continuing on a fortnightly basis starting at 1.30p.m. and finishing about 3.30p.m.

The sessions include an hour of coaching and drills to introduce attendees to to the skills needed to play lawn bowls. Following a short break there are structured games to give an idea about what it is like to actually play lawn bowls.

New students are still most welcome to attend - the Maleny Bowls Club would love to see you there.

We are back into the Queensland Show Circuit and once again I am travelling as part of the Show Circuit collecting donations from the small country towns. They’re always friendly.

One cannot describe the sheer horror/panic of opening your eyes not even 10ish minutes later and seeing a tree directly in front of you with a cane field illuminated by headlights, still wearing my UHF headphones with the drone of static….. thinking that I’d fallen asleep driving. Far out that’s not something I’m gonna forget in a hurry.

Timber getters and their families had a hard life.

From the 1880s until the middle of the twentieth century, one of the principal themes in the history of South East Queensland was the promotion of settlement on the land. As part of this small settlements and towns often grew up in places associated with the gathering of timber

Many of the pioneering parents raised large families in homes constructed of nothing more than saplings and bark, the readily available materials harvested from the local bush and dirt floors were not uncommon.

The timber-getters and their bullock teams which worked the big timber forests are long gone but they played an important role in the development of the early settlements.
