AMS provides A-Frame onboard Cantiere delle Marche’s Flexplorer An A-Frame crane is designed and built by AMS in collaboration with Cantiere delle Marche for the first Flexplorer, MY Aurelia. The crane comfortably moves tenders and toys larger than those feasible with a classic 3-deck layout where, normally, the garage or upper deck is used for transport. The A-Frame is designed for perfect integration into the yacht’s deck. In retracted position, cranes and hydraulic actuators are hidden by three flaps that open and close automatically, allowing the crane to exit and re-enter when the tender is launched. For this reason, the crane guarantees maximum functionality and efficiency, respecting the aesthetics of the yacht without scarifying important areas such as the upper deck and the garage.

Project Paint-It The Azimut Benetti Research and Development Office took part in the European Project Paint-it. This project is a new environmentally friendly manufacturing approach for a marine antifouling coating, a major international research effort co-financed by the European Union through the Life Programme in the area of antifouling coatings for hulls, confirming its intention to contribute to a yachting industry that is respectful of the marine ecosystem. The scope of this project isn’t limited to the yachting industry. In addition to the marine sector, the formula tested can be used in civil engineering, in wastewater treatment plants and, more generally, in plants that use water systems in various industrial production processes.

The fourth yacht sold by Bering in 2020 means a total of seven yachts are currently in construction at the brand’s dedicated facility in Antalya, Turkey. PALMA SUPERYACHT SHOW 2021

Show must go on SO FAR, THIS YEAR’S BOAT SHOW CALENDAR HAS BEEN MORE ABOUT THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC AND EVENT CANCELLATIONS THAN ABOUT EXCHANGING BUSINESS CARDS AND SCOPING OUT THE LATEST additions to the brokerage market. However, the Palma Superyacht Show’s team members have hardly been resting on their laurels. Not only are they working towards the show’s next edition, but they are also committed to hosting a show which will be stronger and more unifying than ever. ith its award-winning marinas, capable yards, and catch-all array of services, Palma de Mallorca holds all the cards when it comes to accommodating yacht owners, captains and crew. Additional reasons behind the island’s maritime allure are its cyan waters and perfect sailing conditions, not to mention the ever-growing Palma Superyacht Show. The capital’s annual mustering of industry influencers and display of nautical eye-candy has gone from strength to strength since its 2013 launch. Whether you’re an experienced owner keen to explore exciting additions to the brokerage/ charter market or if you are new to the illustrious world of yachting, the Palma Superyacht Show features some of the finest superyachts currently for sale and/or charter. The show’s sweeping array of shore-side exhibitors, showcasing anything from the latest advancements in sail design to cutting-edge marine electronics, is another huge attraction.

It’s a date New dates for the Palma Superyacht Show 2021 event have been announced. The show, which was due to take place in early May, will now be held from 3 to 6 June. The Palma Superyacht Show organisation believes that a postponement is the right choice for everyone involved, both on a local and international level. The new dates coincide with the reopening of most of the island’s hotels and a projected restart of Balearic tourism. They are mindful that preparing to exhibit at a yacht show like the Palma Superyacht Show is a timeconsuming process and hope to have given their exhibitors and partners sufficient advance notice to make logistical adjustments. Although later than initially planned, the Palma Superyacht Show will go ahead and when it does, it will be

First things first Whether by taking part in the 2021 event, sharing our news on social media, or sending emails with encouraging words, the date change was followed by a huge amount of support from past and present Palma Superyacht Show exhibitors. Through this support for the team and show, exhibitors demonstrate how much they value the show and appreciate its place in the local and global yachting community. “Together with our exhibitors and partners, we can not only deliver a great show but also pave the way for a swift nautical Balearic recovery”, Palma Superyacht Show team members share. With regard to safety, the Palma Superyacht Show team states, “We have of course put all processes in motion so everyone can enjoy the event without having to worry about their health and wellbeing. This remains our most fervent priority.”

PALMA SUPERYACHT SHOW 2021

The Palma Superyacht Show 2021 will be held from 3-6 June.

Quality over quantity Although the show will look a little different this year, it will nonetheless be an innovative, exciting, and fruitful event. It’s imperative to showcase the island’s unique position as a stunning cruising destination and preferred base for superyacht owners, captain, and crew. A thriving Balearic yachting industry and healthy yachting-related businesses are the event’s principal raisons d’être. The 2021 edition will focus on quality, not quantity. There will be a heavier focus on professionalism through the offering of professional passes. A dedicated Refit & Repair area distinguishes itself from the rest of the show by specifically targeting yachting experts and professionals. This is a must-visit for captains and engineers wanting to discuss highquality refit or repair work. The show’s trademark relaxed atmosphere, another nautical ace up its sleeve, is evident through the many parties, events, and impromptu get-togethers, which are predominantly casual, all-inclusive affairs. The Palma Superyacht Show is the first boat show to take place in Europe since the Genova Boat Show in October 2020.

Exhibitors From bespoke interior furnishings to the latest technical advancements in sail design, the Palma Superyacht Show annual exhibitor list encompasses everything you’d expect from this event. From the wide-ranging exhibitors, over 40 of yachting’s finest companies have already signed up to take part in the Palma Superyacht Show 2021 edition. Generali Nautico and North Sails are two examples of such industry leaders, as are the IPM Group and Baltic Yachts.

One thing leads to the other AZIMUT YACHTS CAME ABOUT IN 1969, WHEN THE YOUNG UNIVERSITY STUDENT PAOLO VITELLI FOUNDED AZIMUT SRL, AND BEGAN CHARTERING SAILING BOATS. ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF AZIMUT YACHTS.

I

n 1970 some prestigious yachting brands appointed the company to distribute their boats in Italy. Azimut quickly expanded its operations. Apart from distribution, it began to design new yachts. In a joint venture with Amerglass, it designed the AZ Bali, a massproduced fibreglass boat, which was an immediate success. The company gradually expanded its range, focussing on the lower end of the market with the launch of the AZ Targa in 1977 and on the upper end too with the memorable début of the Azimut Failaka in 1982, the biggest massproduced yacht in fibreglass at the time.

The acquisition of Benetti In 1985 Azimut acquired Benetti. This historical brand, based in Viareggio, had been building

boats since 1873, and designed the concept of the megayacht. Azimut was now able construct its own yachts, defining new style and industry standards that would go on to revolutionise the boat building industry, such as large frameless windows, electric seats, and walnut interiors. From the late nineties onwards, with the acquisition of new boatyards at Fano, the restructuring of the Benetti boatyards at Viareggio and the construction of a new site in Avigliana, Azimut went on to become the foremost builder of yachts and megayachts.

Currently Gathering all this experience and knowledge throughout the years, Azimuth Yachts has grown into a well-respected international yacht builder. Azimuth’s collections, Grande, Flybridge, S, Magellano, Atlantis and Verve include yachts and superyachts in every possible shape and size to meet everyone’s specific needs. Azimuth Yachts is part of the Azimut Benetti Group, who also owns the prestigious brands Benetti Yachts, Yachtique, Lusben, Marina di Varazze and Royal Yacht Club Moscow. The Azimut Benetti Group offers the most extensive range of motor boats from the 34 foot to the 100 metre plus yachts built by Benetti. Azimut Benetti has the most

extensive sales network in the boating industry worldwide, with 138 sites in 68 countries.

Recently launched Magellano 66 The new 20m long Azimut Magellano 66 is a modern Navetta for gentle cruising. With the recent debut of the 25 Metri, followed by the announcement of the arrival of the 30 Metri, the Magellano collection is enjoying an extended moment in the spotlight with the new Magellano 66. The Magellano 66 takes this philosophy even further with surprisingly spacious interiors for its 20 x 5.4m. The first unit of the new Magellano 66 will touch the water in spring, and fortunately, spring is just around the corner.

Comfort and versatility Just like its larger siblings, the new Magellano 66 manages to combine timelessness with modernity and it belongs to the carbon tech generation. But what is it exactly that makes this Navetta so special? If we had to choose just one element, it would most definitely be the internal layout, which, thanks to the boat’s generous dimensions, offers an extraordinary level of comfort and versatility. The spacious day zone is designed to optimise onboard living, distributed over a single level, with vast windows creating an airy, lightfilled environment. Owners wanting to clearly delineate crew and guest areas can easily do so. A sliding door separates the pilot station and galley from the salon, while access from the main deck to owner and guest accommodation is via a decentralised stairway, ensuring total independence and privacy.

On the lower deck, in addition to the owner’s suite and two guest cabins, there is a fourth cabin which can be fitted out as a storage area or with bunk beds. Outside, there is also no shortage of space, and there is no better example of this than the impressively large flybridge, with a stern lounge area that can also incorporate an American bar. The dining zone can be transformed into a spacious relaxation zone where the owner and guests can stretch out in the shade, just a few tantalising metres

above the water. The second-generation Dual Mode hulls deliver smooth cruising even in moderate seas, and outstanding stability whether you’re in displacement mode or steaming along at the maximum speed of 23 knots. The Magellano 66 is powered by a pair of MAN 850hp engines, is EC category class A and comes with an HTS declaration, attesting that it was designed to – and meets – rigorous High Technical Standards.

Beautiful, spacious and smart Azimut 53 Another recent launch was of the Azimut 53, which was scheduled to make its official debut early in 2021. This new yacht from Azimut will compete in the mid-range Flybridge market segment, where Azimut Yachts has always played a leading role with some incredibly successful models. The yacht’s flowing lines hide surprisingly spacious interiors, making it perfect for families who want to enjoy long cruises in absolute comfort. The official reveal of the yacht took place on 12 March via an exclusive live streaming.

It’s all in the details The exterior design characterised by a sophisticated aesthetic is by Alberto Mancini, who continues to work in the direction defined with the Shipyard for the latest models in the Flybridge and S collections. The generously proportioned day area is laid out on almost the

same level, with the galley near the entrance and the living area separated by a difference in height of just 25cm. The surprising sense of airiness and freedom of movement that this creates is enhanced by side windows that run uninterrupted, with no uprights, from just beyond the entrance area to the windscreen. The storage spaces, the depth of the armchairs and sofas, and the galley appliances have all been studied down to the smallest detail to ensure functionality, comfort, convenience and durability.

Propulsion The naval architecture developed by the AzimutBenetti R&D team combined with the choice of a propulsion system featuring two Volvo Penta IPS 950s, ensures not only more volume on board, but also comfort, efficiency and manoeuvrability. The two engines deliver a top speed of 31 knots and a cruising speed of 27 knots, significantly reducing consumption and noise and making mooring operations even simpler.

REFIT & REPAIR

THE FEADSHIP YARD IN MAKKUM HAS WELCOMED HOME THE 57.30M AMARA, FIRST LAUNCHED BY FEADSHIP AS CACIQUE IN 1986. ORIGINALLY DESIGNED BY FRITS DE VOOGT WITH AN INTERIOR BY TERENCE DISDALE, THE CURRENT OWNERS PURCHASED AMARA IN 2020.

New helicopter deck Having spent some very enjoyable times on this classic Feadship, the owners decided to use their experiences to refit Amara to their personal preferences and uses. One of the key aspects of an extensive list of activities will be the installation of a new helicopter deck. This will require the removal of this part of the construction, building a new helideck at the yard and placing this entire section onto Amara. Meanwhile, the teak on the sundeck will be replaced and the foredeck will be fully re-laid in teak.

Back to peak condition The Feadship paint experts are gearing up to showcase their talents on the new helideck, the foredeck, and a range of other areas. Various interior activities and technical work will also be carried out to return Amara to peak condition as she joins a growing fleet of Feadships placed by owners in the uniquely capable hands of the Feadship Refit and Services division.

Leave it up to Feadship Other recent examples include the refit of Feadship W (ex. Larisa) which renewed this modern Feadship to full pedigree status during a project of ten months. The restoration of the classic Feadship Istros also made global headlines both for her beauty and the eco-friendly ethos underpinning every aspect of the rebuild. Regardless of style or requirements, the only way to ensure a Feadship remains a Feadship after a refit or rebuild – with all the benefits that brings in terms of heritage, quality, and resale value – is to have Feadship take care of the work.

Innovation can build a bridge to digitalisation A TRULY INNOVATIVE BUSINESS IS ONE THAT CAN ANTICIPATE ITS CUSTOMER’S DESIRES WHILE ALSO PROVIDING FOR THEIR NEEDS. IF THAT SOUNDS LIKE A CONTRADICTION, THEN IT ONLY SERVES TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHALLENGE THAT MANY BUSINESSES FACE IN ADAPTING to the era of rapid digitalisation. Being able to marry these competing demands requires the ability to adapt a, sometimes traditional business-to-business mindset to a market where the speed of technology adoption can outstrip product development cycles. NAVCOM & MARINE ELECTRONICS

Every superyacht bridge is bespoke and no two are the same, yet superyachts are fully oceangoing vessels, so safety is a priority. Aesthetics vs. type approval The evolution of superyacht bridge design has been driven by increasing requests from designers for systems that combine a very strong aesthetic quality with the type approval that provides high levels of safety and reliability. It is even more true when the area of operation is not concerned with fuel savings or schedule keeping, but the regulated safety space on the bridge. The requirement for type approved standards-based systems for navigation safety is a far cry from an app-based efficiency gain or drone-based spare parts delivery. As a company that has navigation systems in its DNA, it has become a natural extension for us to think about what digitalisation can do for our customers, since more and more of them are working to combine enhanced functionality with improved connectivity from bridge to shore.

Safety first Sperry Marine and long-time partner Telemar Yachting cooperated on the design, delivery, and installation of a complete integrated bridge onboard the superyacht Severin, built by Baglietto, Italy.

James Collett, Managing Director of Sperry Marine.

Sperry.indd 19

Every superyacht bridge is bespoke and no two are the same, yet superyachts are fully ocean-going vessels, so safety is a priority. A type-approved bridge system must provide the look and feel that owners demand, but also the redundancy and backup that the vessel needs. Sperry Marine’s technology is trusted by navies and merchant shipping world-wide, but there is little to match the demanding constraints on space and ventilation for a superyacht bridge that still meets the owner’s requirements for a slick appearance. There are several elements to innovation on the bridge, of which the first centre around gathering data to analyse system performance, better plan servicing and maintenance of the bridge components. Digital updates for the electronic chart display are already happening, but there is a need to improve the procedure for getting the data into the front of the bridge navigation system. Rather than relying on USB flash drives for transfer, there should be an independently hosted back of the bridge system with a secure connection to the front of the bridge system. The data-on-demand model is quickly being replaced by real-time monitoring of vessel systems, and customers are already exploring the benefits of a richer data stream that can enhance safety and efficiency of bridge operations.

bridge system, whether the vessel is alongside or on voyage. This data can also be used to deliver more data from shore such as weather updates, safe routing or berth availability. These changes are already taking place, however we think that customers, rather than vendors, should decide how and at what speed such tools – as well as more advanced ones – should be applied. This new era requires that the supplier changes as well and builds a new skills base with employees experienced in connectivity and data, so that the outcome is an improvement and not a further complication to an already complex business.

Layered cyber security strategy We are also aware that with greater connectivity and increased data transfer comes an increased security risk which must be managed. Our approach is to build a cyber infrastructure that can maintain more than just an ‘air gap’ between the ship’s network and the front of the bridge navigation system to provide a robust physical component of a layered cyber security strategy. This approach to innovation could be viewed as small steps in the right direction, but it is critical that the strategy actually provides tangible results, instead of innovations in search of a business model. By building a platform that can be used to deliver services as well as systems, we will be able to make giant leaps too. It also reflects the fact that – whenever possible – our service engineers are present on the vessel. This will allow us to see how customers use our products and hear first-hand about the improvements and enhancements they want to see. That gives us a unique perspective on how to create new services that meet these changing needs.

A new approach

Customers decide

For a company that has been the go-to for radar, ECDIS, gyrocompass, and autopilot – and that always left operations to the captain – this is a completely new approach. History and heritage are not enough to protect any company from the challenges of digitalisation, but change does not need to be a threat to survival. Instead, it enables a much closer dialogue on how we can support customer operations and deliver real digital value, rather than create disruption for its own sake.

We also employ the same secure data stream to deploy software updates and patches directly into the

he Bilgin 263’s twin MTU Series 4000 V16 engines can power up to a top speed of 20 knots, making it faster than its predecessors, and its MTU SCR system ensures the yacht stays within IMO Tier III exhaust emission limits. Bilgin Yachts has also been announced as a new entry in the 2020 Global Order Book’s Top 20 list.

Having launched its flagship 80m Tatiana in February 2020, Bilgin Yachts has currently built three units of the 80m Bilgin 263 series. The second hull, which has already been sold, is planned to be launched in 2021 and following that, the third hull of the model will be delivered to her owner in 2022. The series emphasises eco-friendliness, featuring a special exhaust system that provides 100% clean air emissions. With two 2,560kW engines, Tatiana can speed up to 19 knots, while the cruising speed of 12 knots keeps her fuel consumption at 250l/h. She is built in compliance with IMO Tier III certification and is the most environmentallyfriendly yacht in her class. Tatiana was designed and engineered by Unique Yacht Design, whilst the interior was once again entrusted to H2 Yacht Design studio. The third unit of the 263 series, namely NB78, is being produced with a completely new layout and shifted to the outfitting facility in West Istanbul Marina. The new 85m ordered superyacht is currently under construction with the planned delivery in 2023.

According to Emrecan Özgün, CEO and Founder of Unique Yacht Design, “The Bilgin 263 has a design attitude that will dominate the yachting sector around the world. This will clearly make her a trendsetter among

steel-aluminum superyachts of today. The owner of 80m Tatiana, code name NB75, loves the sportive and contemporary lines and pays a lot of attention to aesthetical details. From the very first meeting, we focussed on creating a sport superyacht with elegant living areas. In fact, it was a challenge for us to design a yacht both sportive and masculine. Bilgin 263 yachts are full of surprises on both the inside and the outside. The Beach club, which is connected to the main living room, is very approachable and large enough for big gatherings. Tenders and sea toys are located on the front deck, which is how we managed to realise an 8.5m by 1.4m swimming pool. As the size of a yacht increases, it becomes somewhat more difficult for the owner to feel connected to the sea. In order to avoid this, we used large windows, private terraces, and outdoor socialising areas on the board of the Bilgin 263. Each Tatiana cabin now offers different perspectives to those who stay there. Tatiana has a well-balanced and optimised superstructure that leads her to sail up to 19 knots with zero dynamic trim. This makes her a very economical yacht compared to her contemporaries. Additionally, while sailing at a speed of 12 knots with the power of 2,560kW twin engines and a generator, the fuel consumption is around 250l/h per, which we have only seen on a 40m yacht until now.”

Layers of luxury modern Jonny Horsfield, Owner and Design Director of H2 Yacht Design, shares, “Tatiana is a result of a work with an emphasis on details with special and unique materials. Textures used in the living areas attract people from the first moment. The yacht owner is an extremely family-oriented man, he loves to socialise with his family and friends and spends summer months on end on his

yacht. The client has been involved in the industry for years and has owned several yachts, so he knew exactly what to like and what not to like. As a result of our work together, Tatiana appeared. This yacht is contemporary in layout with generous living areas, a huge spa, and a beach club on the aft deck. The Bilgin 263 offers accommodation for up to fourteen guests; eight suites comprising one owner cabin on the owners’ deck, three VIP cabins on the main deck, and four guest cabins on the lower deck. She is also capable of carrying up to 23 crew members on-board to ensure a high level of service and a relaxed luxury yacht experience. Despite the client’s demands, H2 worked hard to create a functional experience and every room on board Bilgin 263 is generously sized and offers a true connection to the sea via multiple large windows. The design can be described as layers of luxury modern. We wanted to achieve an open airy feel for a clean, sleek look, so the best option was to use light and textured luxury materials. With her sharp, crisp interior lines providing that feel of modernity, we have made extensive use of a contrasting combination of rich Macassar veneer and a light eucalyptus, while a book match pattern and gloss finish give a luxurious

feel. And all of this is combined with plenty of marble and touches of detail such as backlit marble, 3D carved stone, and strong textures.”

New projects One of the new projects that Bilgin is currently working on is an on-spec project of a 74m superyacht construction which is coming along for 2022. The design for this yacht has been signed by Unique Yacht Design. The superyacht’s sleek lines allowing large living areas are well-reflected in her interior design. Having six decks, the 74m long Bilgin 243 will offer the owner and their guests alternative living areas while sailing in oceans. As well as a flybridge and sunbathing areas, the superyacht will have a lounge on the upper deck, a salon with a bar section on the bridge deck and a living room including a 16-person dining table on the main deck. The owner’s suite located on the front part of the main deck will be available with a jacuzzi, working space and a private lounge. While a VIP cabin will be located by the owner’s cabin, the layout includes four guest cabins located alongside the crew area on the lower deck.

MARINE PROPULSION

Azipod technology is based on a steerable propulsion system of which the electric drive is contained in a submerged pod outside the ship’s hull, rotating 360 degrees.

A greener marine future Image courtesy of ABB.

A DEBUT CONTRACT WITH DUTCH LUXURY YACHT BUILDER OCEANCO ON AN AZIPOD TECHNOLOGY INSTALLATION PROJECT PAVES the way for a broader cooperation on sustainable electric propulsion in a market expected to exceed EUR 8.4 billion by 2025. ABB’s integrated project scope covers the supply of two 2.5MW Azipod units, together with propulsion drives and controls, specified for a superyacht built to the highest sustainability standards.

Eco-friendly The Azipod system is well-known for superior fuel efficiency and manoeuvrability over conventional setups across a broad variety of vessel types, from cruise ships to tankers and ferries. The scalability of Azipod propulsion

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y.c om

ABB.indd 25

means that it is equally well-suited for the environmentally-conscious superyacht sector, a market in which owners also place special value on the highest comfort standards brought by lower noise and vibrations. Azipod technology is based on a steerable propulsion system of which the electric drive is contained in a submerged pod outside the ship’s hull, rotating 360 degrees. Launched three decades ago, Azipod propulsion has become an industry benchmark for environmentally-friendly vessel technology, with its proven ability to cut fuel consumption by up to 20% compared to traditional shaftline propulsion systems.

The first step “With Oceanco’s ultimate goal of zero impact on the environment, we are delighted to collaborate with ABB Marine & Ports, whose leading-edge technologies are known for delivering the sustainability benefits increasingly sought by superyacht owners”, says Remco Jurgens, Naval Architect at Oceanco. “The two companies are assessing the potential for the integration of complete power and propulsion systems in future projects”, Mr Jurgens adds. Thomas Hackman, Market Development

Manager Superyachts at ABB Marine & Ports, shares, “We are very pleased to have closed this first deal with Oceanco and we look forward to collaborating in the future. Our two companies share an ethos of sustainable business development that provides a strong foundation for our relationship.”

Ambitious targets ABB and Oceanco have both recently underlined their commitment to sustainable development and ambitious targets that will also help decarbonise the marine sector. As part of its Sustainability Strategy 2030 that was launched in November 2020, ABB will achieve carbon neutrality across its own operations and will support its customers in reducing their annual CO2 emissions by at least 100mt, which is equivalent to the annual emissions of 30 million combustion cars. Meanwhile, the superyacht builder has launched the Oceanco NXT initiative to collaborate with partners across different business sectors with the ultimate aim of designing and building zero-emission superyachts.

he judges at Boat International were impressed by the interior architecture, designed in a particularly progressive style by British studio Bannenberg & Rowell, as well as the innovative exteriors and layout by Giorgio M. Cassetta and his team. This success replicates that of the award that Benetti received at the 2019 event for motor yacht Spectre, which was also held by the highly respected yachting magazine Boat International.

Benetti core values The experienced yacht owners who form the World Superyacht Awards jury recognised in Metis the Italian elegance and excellent quality that are the core values of the Benetti brand. The judges particularly appreciated how Metis’ layout was designed to suit the needs of her owner, while extending the modern design trends, including interiors with such good visibility that they are at one with the surrounding seascapes. The beach club, which directly opens towards the sea via three huge shell doors, was another feature that caught their attention. Motor yacht Metis is a distinctively contemporary 63m custom yacht with impressive volumes expressed in flowing lines and innovative details. The steel hull and aluminium superstructure offer six decks and a maximum beam of 11m. The touch-and-go helipad, the 160m2 master apartment with an exclusive outdoor terrace, and the extensive deck areas are just a few of the yacht’s outstanding features. The 20m2 fly deck gym is the cherry-on-the-pie that Kurt Lehman from Yacht Moments is particularly proud of, since it was his idea and one of the features that truly impressed the judges.

Proof of the excellent result is this prestigious award, as well as the sale of four yachts based on Metis’ design that were sold to owners from four different continents.” Giorgio M. Cassetta, who was responsible for the exterior design and layout, comments on the style, “Our goal for Metis was to create a set of essential lines that would give the yacht a subtle sensuality and a recognisable character. She is unmistakably a Benetti yacht, with an added boldness and exquisite balance of proportions. Her refined volumes were precisely crafted to highlight three-dimensionality with precision surface contouring, while offering uncompromised lay-out functionality. Phygital edition of Benetti Yachtmaster Another fruitful event for Benetti was the 21st Benetti Yachtmaster, organised in phygital format on 18 and 19 February 2021. Over 250 people, of which 125 captains, visited the event and connected from all over the world to follow a rich programme of meetings, workshops, analyses and the virtual trade show, the online environment in which event partners showcased their products.

Next generation The theme for this edition of Yachtmaster was next generation yachts characterised by advanced technology and design excellence. The event started off with a welcome speech by Giovanna Vitelli, Vice President of Azimut Benetti, who emphasised the importance of an event like Yachtmaster in the yacht world as it opens up a communication channel between yacht industry professionals and the shipyard. Azimut Benetti Group Marketing Director Benedetta Moreno then spoke about the Shipyard’s history from the Benetti Museum Lounge. Marco Valle, CEO of Azimut Benetti Group, made an appearance at the end of the opening to celebrate the live launch of award-winning yacht Metis. After many other speakers, all with their own areas of expertise, guests turned their attention to the virtual trade show, discovering the initiative’s partners and the products and technologies that were showcased on the virtual platform. Later that day, it was time for the eagerly awaited owner’s team perspective, which featured custom motor yacht Metis and her Captain, Frank Hesse, who spoke online from the yacht’s bridge about his experiences, career milestones, and life on board, seen through the lens of sustainability. The live stream then moved to the galley of the motor yacht, where award-winning chef Italo Bassi delighted guests with an outstanding demonstration of show cooking. In the afternoon, two workshops led by Benetti investigated retrofit-related issues. Two other workshops for stewardesses discussed onboard hospitality and the relaxing effects of tea, with a tasting organised by ‘tea sommelier’ Domenico Gradia. The morning of 19 February got underway with a yoga session streamed live from the main deck of Luminosity, the 108m giga

ith almost 50 years of collective experience in the superyacht charter sector, founding partners Neil Hornsby and Amanda Armstrong launched Yomira in the last quarter of 2020 to offer a highly bespoke consultancy approach to charters, with the 360º client journey at its heart.

Time for an update 2020 will be remembered as a transformational year in which we saw the world come to a virtual standstill, with superyacht charters along with the travel industry especially afflicted. On the positive side, clients are recalibrating their lifestyle priorities by demonstrating a strong

appetite to travel and go yachting again. This is fuelled by the overriding desire to enjoy fulfilling, expertly curated experiences shared with family and friends. “High-end travel clients have been well served over the last decade by a new breed of exclusive travel consultancies specialising in a very personalised proposition for the entire client experience”, says Mr Hornsby. Surprisingly, the yacht charter service model has hardly advanced at all, remaining somewhat archaic and formulaic. “We were therefore motivated to modernise and breathe new life into the charter process with Yomira, going the extra mile in designing life-enhancing superyacht

CHARTER

Our mission is to elevate the experience that clients can enjoy on a charter, and we very much see our role as providing the inspiration and logistics to make this happen. For the more traditional cruising destinations, Yomira offers hidden gems which are usually excluded from ‘milk run’ itineraries such as the Southern Grenadines, the Southern Exumas, the Aeolian Islands, and the Northern Sporades. Customised offerings range from special nutritional programmes coordinated with superyacht chefs and staging blow-your-mind parties on board complete with DJs and live music, to arranging activity schemes for children of all ages, private tours of Tuscan vineyards, coral safaris to Australia’s Outer Barrier Reef, sourcing archaeology or marine biology guides, and much more. Yomira’s vast insider knowledge and expertise of the charter market accumulated over decades combined with being a specialised bespoke consultancy gives the company the agility to innovate and break new ground. “Our mission is to elevate the experience that clients can enjoy on a charter, and we very much see our role as providing the inspiration and logistics to make this happen”, Mr Hornsby explains.

experiences to become more relevant in a changing world”, Mr Hornsby adds.

Superyachting as a lifestyle Yomira not only dives deeper into understanding the vacation aspirations of clients by applying perception and insight to foster enduring professional relationships, the company also simplifies cumbersome procedural complexities and ensures transparency. Even experienced charter clients begrudge the convoluted booking process and want a more streamlined system that is faster and more efficient. “This is a critical factor in being able to attract new clients to the concept of chartering a yacht, especially next-generation clients”, says Ms Armstrong. Yomira positions itself as an approachable, highly discrete, and trusted resource, promoting superyachting as a lifestyle choice rather than a stereotypical status symbol.

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y.c om

Yomira.indd 31

“We aim to build a more favourable perception of the yacht charter by making it more appealing and accessible to a wider audience in order to grow the market”, Ms Armstrong adds. According to Yomira, clients today yearn for more immersive experiential travel opportunities, and Yomira’s consultancy service is designed to guide clients through the limitless scope offered by chartered yachts.

Elevating the experience For clients with wanderlust, Yomira’s options include stay and sail programmes in the Maldives incorporating a private island, spa, and wellbeing cruises in Indonesia, diving trips in French Polynesia’s Tuamotu Archipelago, bone fishing in the Bahamas, arctic expeditions, and a variety of naturalist voyages in Australia, including whale watching and participation in reef projects.

Going forward Yomira is confident that the charter industry will gradually recover its ground once travel restrictions are relaxed. In the meantime, the company exercises in-depth due diligence to reassure clients regarding health, safety, and travel protocols during these continuing uncertain times. Equally importantly, Yomira is committed to supporting sustainable yachting, from promoting the often-underestimated pleasures of chartering a sailing yacht to engaging in carbon footprint reduction initiatives. “We also foresee increasing interest from clients in ocean conservation projects going forward, and we will be developing some exciting voyages with customised aspects to meet this demand”, says Ms Armstrong.

The schooner Vagrant is a living sailing legend, now also recognized by the World Superyacht Awards.

Vagrant’s owner decided to bring her to Royal Huisman’s dedicated refit division – Huisfit – for a major refit and provided a very clear brief to the Huisfit team, “Reconstruct Vagrant’s magnificent elegance and style inside and out, with the utmost respect and care for her appearance to reflect the past decades of family ownership. Also, re-engineer Vagrant with the finest materials and most advanced board systems for sensible, effortless and safe operation, allowing her to cruise with a small and happy crew. In summary, Vagrant should be ready to last another 100 years.” What ensued was a very extensive rebuild

project, carried out by Huisfit’s inhouse team at the Royal Huisman shipyard, which was supported by expert consultation with Dykstra Naval Architects on the upgrade of Vagrant’s rig by Royal Huisman’s sister company Rondal.

A living sailing legend Although Huisfit projects are never a typical refit, the vast scope of this 22-month Huisfit project made it more like a new build, both for those involved at the shipyard and likewise noted by outside observers. The rewards of this project are plentiful though. The report by the jury states, “It stood out, not only for the painstaking manner in

which the rebuild was undertaken, but also for the magnificent result.” The judges were impressed with the detailed work undertaken and believe, “It has undoubtedly helped to preserve this magnificent yacht for another 100 years at least.” Thanks to her owner, Vagrant will not become forgotten history. The schooner is a living sailing legend, now also recognised by the World Superyacht Awards.

Atlantide

Atlantide was designed by naval architect Alfred Mylne and built by the British shipyard Philip & Sons in 1930.

Having received the award for the rebuild project in November 2020, Huisfit looks forward to starting a new restauration in addition to the current refit projects – a project so grand in scale, that they will be allocating it the same status as a new project. According to Huisfit, “It’s a very special, unique, and historic project, which we are certain to make into a success thanks to our skilled craftsmen and women, together with the owners and their team!”

The team of Royal Huisman and Huisfit is honoured to merit the continued trust of Dr. Jim Clark, who commissioned the shipyard to carry out the very special restoration of his most recent acquisition, the 1930’s yacht Atlantide. This 37m classic motorsailer was shipped from Newport, US, to the Netherlands, and arrived at Royal Huisman’s headquarters in Vollenhove in the first week of 2021. Following the successful 2020 refit by Huisfit of Jim and Kristy Clark’s famous J-Class yacht Hanuman, and with three newbuild orders already completed by Royal Huisman in recent decades (Hyperion in 1998, Athena in 2004, and Hanuman in 2009), Dr. Clark decided the same craftsmen and women are best suited to take on this new project, rebuilding Atlantide at the quality level Royal Huisman is known for.

Realising yet another dream Atlantide was designed by naval architect Alfred Mylne and built by the British shipyard Philip & Sons in 1930. Following Atlantide’s rich history spanning over 90 years, the team of Royal Huisman and Huisfit is grateful for this opportunity to preserve the legendary yacht well into the future. The shipyard’s team has an established track record of success with the restoration of classics, conversions, and rebuilds of historical yachts. Structural work, updates, and conservation work are all embarked on with keen interest and great skill. Jan Timmerman, CEO of Royal Huisman, comments, “If a discerning client commissions a fourth very substantial project to the same shipyard, you just know that the work you perform is truly appreciated. We are most honoured to find ourselves in the position to realise yet another dream for our esteemed clients Jim and Kristy Clark.” The rebuild of Atlantide is scheduled for delivery in spring 2022.

The right choice

Innovative lines and timelessness

“The RJ range of yachts is definitely a game changer for Cantiere delle Marche. With three sales and five interior designs commissioned to Francesco Paszkowski, the cooperation with a multi-awarded designer has already proven to be the right choice”, says Vasco Buonpensiere, co-founder and Sales & Marketing Director of Cantiere delle Marche. “It was a great pleasure to work with an owner who was keen on bringing his experience to Cantiere delle Marche”, says Mr Buonpensiere. “By choosing Cantiere delle Marche, he offered a serious statement of trust in our yard’s reliability and construction quality. I’d like to add that it’s inspiring and a reason for pride to see that a growing number of experienced and motivated owners prefers Cantiere delle Marche to build their yachts”, Mr Buonpensiere continues. “Our clients have fantastic ideas for cruising, diving, luxury toys, and serious boating. combining the owner’s wishes and the design and technical aspects. The brief was for an explorer with large social spaces both inside and outside, offering close contact with the sea in order to enjoy staying on board during a long cruising period . We worked on several fundamental design features, namely the shape of the superstructure and the overhangs and windows on the main deck. Priority was given to the exterior spaces, with special emphasis on the idea of contact with the sea which we obtained by lowering the gunwales on the main deck and by creating several alfresco areas. One of the outstanding points of the exterior spaces is the sun deck, a wide terrace with living, dining, sunbed areas, and a swimming pool to allow guests to enjoy most of their cruising time on this deck. The

central section of the superstructure is rounded, sloping fore and after and is hence almost invisible from the sun deck. Combined with the transparency along the outer perimeter, there is no interruption to the view in all directions and it enhances visual contact with the sea and surrounding environment. The upper deck provides two further large social areas for sunbathing and dining aft and forward.”

Welcoming and elegant interior Interior Designers Mr Paszkowski and Margherita Casprini share, “The owner had a specific idea of what his yacht should look like. We had already worked with him, and we were confident that we could meet his wishes for his new yacht. This means that we have been able to start with the interior design process from a Lobby.

Cantiere delle Marche has been strongly dedicated to achieving these goals and the synergy we established with the yard served as a great support for us in creating the new yacht and turning the owner’s wishes into reality. We can really say that it was a case of perfect teamwork between the owner, shipyard, and our studio. The owner’s brief for a welcoming and elegant interior was achieved by placing emphasis on predominantly light and neutral hues, alternately combined with dark shades, designing some unique furniture pieces, matching the same materials in different ways, all while maintaining the same atmosphere everywhere. Polished bleached and brushed oak was selected for the walls, together with rosewood and leather combined with brushed oak slats, while lacquered panels were used for

the ceilings. Polished rosewood was also selected for the furniture exterior, while the furniture interior features rosewood with a matt finishing. Jerusalem Stone is the marble chosen for all the bathrooms, in combination with rosewood and oak to provide the contrasting colour decoration between dark and light hues and to match the overall interior decoration. Careful attention was given to the different types of finishing of the materials. For example, extra clear glass was selected for the doors in the lobby and the shelves in the living on the main deck, and smoky glass for wardrobe doors and the top of bedside tables. Made-in-Italy manufacturers such as Minotti, Poltrona Frau, and Flexform were selected for sofas, armchairs, chairs, and coffee tables, while all custom-made beds, bedside tables, and furniture has been designed by our studio.”

Main specs RJ hosts twelve guests in five suites and seven crew members in four cabins. The yacht features twin heavy duty MTU engines 10V2000M72, delivering 900kW each at 2,250rpm, allowing a top speed of 14.5 knots. At the economic speed of 9 knots, she will have a remarkable range of around 5,500nm with about 10% fuel left upon arrival.

Investing in sustainability

MB92 HAS ANNOUNCED IT WILL EMBARK ON AN INTENSIVE DRIVE TOWARDS BECOMING MORE SUSTAINABLE.

M

B92 has been working towards more environmentally-friendly practices for several years, but in 2020 the group decided to vastly increase its efforts and make sustainability one of its principal strategic pillars across both shipyards. As such, the group has launched a 2021-2025 sustainability plan targeted at consolidating its position as a leader in environmental care in the superyacht refit industry. The five-year plan will tackle six key areas of focus. The focal areas boil down to reducing the shipyard’s carbon footprint, decreasing combustible gas emissions, minimising non-recoverable waste, improving port and sea water quality, reducing VOC emissions, and improving social responsibility.

Sustainable future “The problems we face as an industry are simply too big and too important to face alone, so we must all work together to evolve towards a more

4 0 | S Y I  2 0 2 1 | Volum e 1 6 | Issue 1

MB92 Group.indd 40

sustainable future as quickly as possible”, says Pepe García-Aubert, CEO of MB92 Group. “The journey ahead of us is long and we understand that there are many challenges to overcome that will involve major changes, not only for our company, but also for our supply chain and in the nature of the solutions we propose to our clients.”

infrastructure and innovations. A number of initiatives are planned for this year that are designed to not only reduce an activity’s impact on the environment, but also to offer benefits to clients in terms of greater efficiency and simplify ample processes such as shore power connections and waste management.

Local and international commitments

The company has two superyacht destinations that are available throughout the year: MB92 Barcelona and MB92 La Ciotat. Each site is equipped with the latest in shipyard facilities and technology and is supported by a trusted network of suppliers. A sustainability committee was formalised in La Ciotat consisting of representatives from the entire shipyard, including procurement, HSE, project management, and communication. MB92 La Ciotat is currently researching and developing a new filtration system for VOCs and is working

As part of the plan, MB92 has forged alliances with local and international organisations such as the United Nations, the Water Revolution Foundation (as one of the first anchor partners), and the Catalan Government through the Climate Change Agreements. A significant multimillion euro investment will be allocated for the next five years enabling the group to execute the set goals, with a large proportion to be invested in environmentally-efficient

with La Ciotat Shipyards on a number of projects to improve shore power connection and water treatment. In addition, the company is investing over EUR 40 million in the future 4,300t Atlas yacht lift, which will provide clients with an environmentally-friendly drydocking solution with features including the largest port-based artificial fish nursery worldwide.

Sustainability report Finally, an important part of the plan is overseeing and reporting progress. The group will hence begin publishing an annual sustainability report outlining its actions and deliverables. The oversight committee will include external sustainability auditors and will be EMAS-certified.

FOCUS ON ITALY

Italian craftsmanship FOR MORE THAN HALF A CENTURY, SANLORENZO HAS BROUGHT ARTISTRY TO THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF BESPOKE MOTOR YACHTS. A Sanlorenzo yacht or superyacht is the embodiment of Italian mastery seamlessly blended with the most advanced technology, with all yachts made to measure in resin-infused fibreglass, steel or aluminium. ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF SANLORENZO.

New model in the Explorer line Founded in 1958 by Gianfranco Cecchi and Giuliano Pecchia who opened the first shipyard near Florence, Sanlorenzo was taken over in 1972 by Giovanni Jannetti who launched the first fibreglass hull boat in 1985. In 2005, Massimo Perotti, the actual Executive Chairman, took the baton. Continuously evolving innovation and creativity at the highest level of customisation, with the unique capacity to break the mould, and to always be recognised; these are the ingredients that have permitted Sanlorenzo to become the world’s first single-brand shipyard in the production of yachts over 30m. The emblem of this approach is the 500Exp, the elegant and

advanced interpretation of the Explorer line that continues to demonstrate its success with the sale of the nineth unit, a 47m long superyacht sold by Sanlorenzo Asia and represented by Simpson Marine. To be delivered in 2022, the new superyacht is a model that gives the owner a true sense of adventure in the open sea, offering spaciousness on board and the latest generation technology for the most complete autonomy to explore secluded and unspoiled destinations. The 500Exp model, an evolution of the 460Exp, is distinguished by her aesthetic characteristics and exceptional navigational performance.

The 500Exp is distinguished by her aesthetic characteristics and exceptional navigational performance.

Unthinkable spaces The imposing external lines that recall the profiles of large explorer vessels liberate the area from bow to stern to allow storage for the tender, a sailing yacht of up to 9m or, depending on the owner’s request, a seaplane or a submarine, with spaces unthinkable in a yacht of similar dimensions. The lower deck houses a beach club with a bar which, thanks to the opening and folding hatch, becomes another terrace overlooking the sea that can be transformed into a garage to accommodate tenders up to seven metres long.

Full speed ahead Sanlorenzo Superyacht does not stop here. Among numerous deliveries such as the recent one of the second unit of the 44Alloy and two imminent launches, they also commenced three simultaneous builds; the eighth unit of the 52Steel, the third unit of the 62Steel, and the sixth unit of the 44Alloy, which is currently under construction. Large interior volumes and exterior spaces under the banner of maximum comfort are combined in the 52Steel, an exceptional fivedeck model under 500GT, highly appreciated by the international public thanks to advanced solutions that have allowed it to achieve numerous important awards. One of the revolutionary elements of the 52Steel is the

entire stern area: the main deck includes the glass-bottomed swimming pool that allows natural light to filter from the main deck into the area below and an exclusive beach area with fold-down balconies on three sides to create small beaches at the water’s edge. The same area can be quickly transformed into a flooded garage for the owner’s tender: the floor of the beach area is raised to make way for a space that can accommodate tenders up to 8m in length. The new 62Steel and 44Alloy superyachts are characterised by a strong focus on liveability of the interior and exterior spaces and their relationship with the sea, and are full of cutting-edge solutions.

The 62Steel: New standards for metal superyachts With two units already sold and a third under construction, the new 62Steel superyacht offers surprising solutions designed to guarantee exceptional comfort and on-board liveability. The emblem of Sanlorenzo’s extraordinary approach is the new 62Steel that sets new standards for the sector of metal superyachts. The concept of 62Steel is translated into the incredible spaces of the vast, sumptuous owner’s suite, the large main living area, and the majestic Beach Club on the lower deck. Other 62Steel project’s special features are the owner’s apartment that extends as far as

215m2, of which 75m2 are indoors and 140m2 outdoors at the bow of the upper deck, also known as the owner’s deck. The apartment is divided into various zones: the bedroom area with a 180-degree panoramic view towards the bow and sides thanks to large full-height windows, a studio, two spacious bathrooms, and a walk-in dressing room. The forward part of the suite offers a swimming pool for counter-current exercise, as well as large sunbathing and relaxation areas. Towards the stern, the owner’s cabin also contains a 6m2 sky lounge, a space for entertainment and play completed on the outside by an open-air dining area with panoramic view. The convivial focal point of the vessel is the living area on the main deck, which shares its 90m2 space with the indoor dining room outfitted to welcome sixteen persons. Towards the stern, this deck offers outdoor living areas bordering the pool, designed with a sliding roof that transforms into a large sundeck of almost 8m2. The main deck furthermore contains six cabins, five guest units of which two with king-size beds and three double cabins with twin beds, as well as a massage room. The extraordinary beach club to the aft of the lower deck with a covered area of 92m2 contains relaxation areas, a bar, a fitness zone, and a steam bath, joined by 40m2 of folding terraces at the stern and on two sides.
