10 Ways Print and Digital Media Can Work Together to Improve Your Business
editor’s note
EDITOR’S NOTE
Are you innovative? These days, the fact is that unless we’re innovating within our own industries, we’re standing still, and if we stand still long enough, we perish. So we must be constantly moving, constantly moving forward. What exactly is INNOVATION? According to the Oxford Dictionary it is : NOUN The action or process of innovating. A new method, idea, product.
with Vickie Magic
DERIVING FROM THE WORD INNOVATE VERB Make changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.

Introduce (something new, especially a product). A new method, idea, product.
Never fear starting. Fear never starting.” Ryan Lilly.
Have a look at your business, have a look at your industry – what is the industry doing? How can you do it differently? For Business Matters we know that we constantly have to think outside the square, look for new ideas and ways of doing what we do differently and think of new ideas constantly to put us ahead of our game. For us our innovation is interaction – interaction within the pages of the magazine, through videos etc, interaction with the magazine and the website, interaction between our readers and our advertisers, helping them meet through our events, helping them to connect with each other. I slam it home time after time, but people buy a product or a service from someone they know, someone they like, someone they trust. Step one is that you must meet. Our innovation is that we are catalysts in making that happen. Others do now, but we were the innovators for a magazine to have a new issue launch every single issue, a party if you like, to celebrate and entice our advertisers and readers to get together, being the first step towards creating business with each other. We have to keep asking, “What else, What else, What Else?” over and over and over. What else can you do within your business to innovate, to stand out, to be different, to become famous? It comes back to creating a unique point of difference for you and your business. What’s yours? Is it constantly being upgraded? Have a brain-storming meeting in the next few weeks with your team, invite some of your top clients and come up with some new ideas and innovative ways of doing what you do. Have a look at pages 6 and 15 in this issue to see a very innovative way of raising funds for a cause you might be passionate about.

unityaid.com STEPHEN BOIKE CREATOR AND FOUNDER STEPHEN BOIKE 0413 294 465
HERE’S THE COOL PART
‘Businesses and individuals can nominate an amount of their product or service to their beneficiary, this is a win-win situation for all.’ Once the master of residential development, builder turned philanthropist Stephen Boike is now the face of (and more importantly, the brains behind) a different kind of enterprise altogether. He wants us to be a force for social good - resulting in stronger communities and more reliance on the kindness of others through the ‘social good economy’. With the recent launch of his new platform, Unityaid, Stephen is on a mission to empower businesses and individuals seeking financial support for individual causes - even if it’s their own. “Unityaid came from many thoughts about the economy,” explains Stephen. “Why is it that when the economy struggles, as it recently has post-recession, society falls apart? We still have the same amount of skills, services, and resources - arguably an abundance of most of these - so isn’t there another way we can move things around? And that tapped into the idea of using technology to point out those possibilities in our increasingly complex societies”. Stephen didn’t know how, what or when but with his passion, desire and enthusiasm accelerating full speed; Stephen’s answer was to create a platform. He had researched blogs, forums, articles, web sites, charities, traditional methods of fundraising and brain storming constantly for answers to his burning questions. Stephen discovered crowdfunding and realised how life changing crowdfunding is, but there had to be some kind of difference incorporated, something innovative, something that hasn’t been done before, something that would set ourselves a part from others and something that would benefit the fortunate and unfortunate businesses and individuals at the same time - something where people can help themselves or others. After sixteen months of strategy and development 6 ISSUE 64

work, Unityaid was born. It can be accessed by anyone and is fully functional for both desktop and on any mobile device. The possibilities of what or who to raise funds for are endless. Most people raise funds for what matters to them - which means that the campaigners can be raising funds for themselves or to support another person, group, business, organisation, non-profit or a foundation they’re passionate about. You may need funding for a project that would benefit you, or to change the life of an individual. You may want to support education, fight hunger, help a family that has fallen victim to floods or fund a business you know is making a difference. Each campaign is created and crafted independently by the business or person behind it. Campaigners have complete control and are responsible for creating and publicising their own campaigns. They create their campaigns, shoot their videos, determine their funding goals, and brainstorm on what rewards to offer contributors. When they’re ready, campaigners launch their campaigns and share it with their communities. If people are inspired and like the campaign, they can contribute or claim an offered reward in exchange for their contribution.
“I think the way we construct ideas of what’s possible is very culturally limited and relative, whereas what’s actually possible is so much bigger than what we might imagine.”
What are the benefits of launching a campaign? An act of social good draws companies and individuals into the community. It improves engagement and brings tremendous rewards for a business or individual. It’s good for your brand and it presents the opportunity to interact with fans, followers, customers and potential customers, while having a positive impact on the community. Social good captures the attention of media outlets, and of social media users around the globe. When you make the decision to do social good, it can have a seismic impact on your organisation – there’s no better way to earn the trust and admiration of people, invigorate your workforce, and change lives for the better. Kudos to Matt Dominiak Unityaid Matt is the senior architect developer and a true asset for the community of Unityaid. Without his dedication and highly competent skills as an engineer, Unityaid would not be changing people’s lives for the better and he’s a top bloke too! Words by Vickie Magic Business Matters Magazine I personally was searching for a platform to raise funds for my brother and sister in-law, culminating in shaving my head at the end of September. Unityaid is the perfect vehicle for me to raise funds and also seek support from my own community, while offering cool rewards in exchange of their contribution. View more on page 15.

10 Ways Print and Digital Media Can Work Together to Improve Your Business by Steve Goodman I have a friend who is a major audiophile – he swears that the only way to listen to music is on vinyl. This same fellow, incidentally, is also a filmmaker and director of photography who swears by film, as opposed to video or any other digital acquisition media. To hear him tell it, you’d think there is digital and there is analogue, and never the twain shall meet. I’ve heard these two camps fight like cats and dogs. And yet, I also know many people who have real life cats and dogs living together under one roof, that are perfectly happy and even love one another. It is all about how you raise them, and teach them how to get along.
When it comes to your business, it really is the same thing with using both traditional and digital media. Rather than an oil and water relationship that cannot mix, they are more of a Yin and Yang – different, but not exactly opposite and each needing a little bit of the other. Here, then, are 10 ways for digital and print to happily co-exist for the improvement of your business.
8 ISSUE 64
1. T raditional to Drive Digital This is first and foremost the best way to use traditional media and social media together to achieve your marketing goals. Use print and traditional media to drive traffic to your website, Twitter, Facebook, or other social media outlets. This can be everything from a doorhanger to a huge billboard! 2. T raditional as the Reward Announce and create some kind of contest in your social media, and the winner gets a full writeup in your company newsletter or featured in a press release, magazine article, or television spot. 3. B usiness Cards Think business cards are so last century? Think again! Business cards are still a great way to network, and now with the option of adding QR codes to the back of the card, they not only provide your contact info, but can connect directly to your digital marketing. 4. P romotional Brochures Like business cards, traditional print media such as your company brochure are far from dead. A slick, beautifully designed brochure is still a great way to make your company shine and tell your story. Create on online version of the same brochure, but in that one you can have additional rich content such as videos and animation, and again you have print and digital working together to deliver one powerful message. 6. P rint to Drive Feedback Traditional and print media can be great ways to tell your story and reach a vast audience. The problem is they have always been one-way communication.
Use them as you always have, but let them be a gateway to feedback and two-way communication that is the hallmark of digital media. 7. M agazine Ads Niche or industry publications (like this one!) are still a great way to reach a target audience. Your ad can again drive the reader to social media, with a CTA to a specific landing page, or QR codes. Ask the publisher about a package deal that may include an editorial piece in the magazine, a blog post or featured newsletter. 8. D irect Mail Direct mail is another vestige from the marketing past that is receiving a digital makeover. Did you know there are high-tech direct mail pieces that can now have video or other rich digital
RESTAURANT Absolute Waterfront dining Under the Tower at the Mooloolaba Wharf
content directly embedded into the piece? That’s right, consumers can receive a print piece in the mail and access digital content without the need to go online - talk about synergy! 9. Newsletters The term ‘newsletter’ has been adapted to the digital age to usually mean an email blast or alert about some breaking news relevant to your target audience, or the traditional three to four page company newsletter, but an online version. However, do not overlook the value of a traditional print newsletter sent to a targeted demographic. Done correctly, it can be an informative and visually stunning way to enhance your digital presence, by driving readers to get more of the story online. 10. O nline to Drive Offline Events, seminars, and workshops are another form of traditional media. In sort of the inverse of number one, be sure you are using your digital media to drive bodies to your offline events.

Lunch special with dessert & a glass of wine from $27.50 123 Parkyn Pde “The Wharf” Mooloolaba Tuesday to Saturday from 10 til late Sundays 10 til 5
Going back to my friend who is the audiophile – if you think about why he and many others like vinyl so much, despite what they say or think, it isn’t because they sound any better than digital recordings. It’s because it is ‘real,’ and because of the emotional attachment that comes with owning something tactile, that can be picked up and held. It’s the same thing with print media – it can be touched and felt, preserved forever, and adds a level of legitimacy that purely digital cannot.
Like a piece of fine art, print media touches on the emotions, and reaching the emotions of your potential customer and is at the core of any successful marketing strategy.

BY BRUCE CONRAD WILLIAMS Innovation is a mindset, an attitude, a culture. It’s about embracing the process of transformation and involves at least three key factors – adaptability, iterative development and authenticity. In evolutionary terms it’s not the strongest, fastest or fittest who survive. It’s those who are most able to adapt. Change is inevitable. It’s not what happens that’s important, it’s how we respond. Mark Twain said, “If you always do what you always did, then you’ll always get what you always got.” But that’s no longer true. Just ask Kodak. To thrive in today’s fluid and irregular market place, adaptability is essential. Sometimes innovation is letting go of the old so the new has room to grow. Innovation also means recognising that failure is guaranteed. It’s an integral part of the process. Bottom line, we have to be OK with mistakes. The goal isn’t to not make mistakes, the goal is to create something of value. Innovation is iterative development. The Japanese word for the process is kaizen, which literally means ‘good change.’ Kaizen is a philosophical commitment to continuous gradual improvement. We’re often looking for the next breakthrough, the next killer app, the next big thing. But in reality true
innovation is slow and steady. It’s a daily commitment to listen to feedback, analyse the stats, ask ourselves the hard questions and continually improve what we do. Perhaps most importantly, true innovation is about authenticity. As Emerson said, “Envy is ignorance, and imitation is suicide.” If we compare ourselves to others or try to emulate them, we never rise to our full capacity. Know yourself, be yourself, love yourself, holds true for businesses as much as it does for people. Being crystal clear about our mission, vision, values and purpose is the best way to cultivate lasting and effective innovation. The more congruent our goals and actions with our core values, the more likely we are to create products and services that are unique. Bruce Conrad Williams is an author, speaker, consultant and Demartini Method® facilitator who helps people (re)discover their vision, mission and purpose. He provides people with simple tools and repeatable systems that enable them to smash through perceived limits and live the life they love with imagination, inspiration and gratitude. Bruce firmly believes the secret to a fulfilled life is found in the Delphic Oracle’s ancient
wisdom, “Know yourself, be yourself, love yourself.” Or as Shakespeare put it, “This above all, to thine own self be true.” For over 35 years, Bruce has been inspiring people from all walks of life to define and empower their personal mission. “I just love to help people wake up their own unique inner genius and see them inspired and empowered to live their dreams,” Bruce says. “Everyone has a unique gift to bring to the world, my mission is to help them find it and live it.”

one year on! A massive congratulations to the entire Noosa tourism industry! It is now just over one year since Tourism Noosa launched the Welcome to Noosa online regional induction and customer service training program and we are delighted with the take up of the program, with now over 1,020 participants signing up. Well done! One year on and the Welcome to Noosa program is still achieving fantastic results! Aimed at revitalising quality service culture in the Noosa region, the program provides basic information on Noosa – why the region is so special, its history, key things to do in Noosa, information on the Noosa Biosphere and more as well as providing great customer service strategies and information on workplace health and safety. The program helps operators to deliver a memorable experience for Noosa visitors and local customers alike. This in turn is increasing the likelihood of increased and repeat visitation which will help retain and build local jobs. I would encourage anyone in Noosa who hasn’t already done so, to complete the Welcome to Noosa program and boost our entire region’s economic prosperity into the future. A big thank you to everyone who has embraced and supported the program and well done again Noosa from the whole Tourism Noosa team!
Damien Massingham
Chief Executive Officer - Tourism Noosa
“Firstly, I wish to congratulate you on the program being such a success. It is great to see that you have achieved high numbers of participation and received very positive feedback. I commend the efforts and enthusiasm of Tourism Noosa in its cooperative approach to strengthening your local industry.”
Campbell Newman
Hon. Campbell Newman MP Premier of Queensland
“Congratulations on the success of your Welcome to Noosa Program. I look forward to seeing the Welcome Mat out across the Sunshine Coast for the 2014 DestinationQ Forum.”
“This is a great initiative by Tourism Noosa. When it comes to customer service, there is no such thing as too much training. I have personally done the Welcome to Noosa course and will be supporting our Council front line staff in doing the same.”
Brett de Chastel
“The Welcome to Noosa program is of value to anyone who wants to learn more about Noosa. The well-researched content improves your knowledge of local people, history, geography and attractions and makes you better able to help anyone who asks you for assistance. Noosa’s economy still depends on the quality of the visitor experience and our knowledge and willingness to help visitors with good advice is a big part of that. The course was easy to do and has given me a renewed and deeper appreciation of where we’re lucky enough to live and work.”

Hon. Jann Stuckey MP Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business & the Commonwealth Games
“This is without doubt the best delivery I have seen across any property or tourism organisation. To cover such a broad spectrum on such a base level with such a professional approach is brilliant. Congratulations and thank you.”
Niel Mason
General Manager Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort & Spa
“I am really pleased to have my team from the Surf Club complete Welcome to Noosa. We are in the business of hospitality and to be able to provide that extra level of service with a really good understanding of Noosa will give our guests a truly unique and special welcome. My team consists of many Noosa locals as well as people from interstate and overseas and we all came away learning something new about Noosa.”
“Welcome to Noosa was excellent! It offered invaluable information and tools for our team. We have ‘long term’ and a couple ‘new to the area’ team members and everyone learnt something...some without even realising it! We had some sceptics initially but all agreed it helped to identify ways we can better serve our patients and the local community. There is no such thing as too much knowledge about the cultural and environmental elements of the Noosa area.”

“Welcome to Noosa is celebrating its first birthday and celebrates its success by exceeding its take-up target of 500 trainees by more than 500. Not only that, those trainee ambassadors for Noosa are drawn not only from the tourism industry like restaurants and tour operators, but also from pharmacies, optometrists, real estate agencies, school-leavers and others who wish to pursue a career in tourism. IRT Queensland
IRT Group is
one of Australia’s largest community based seniors lifestyle and care providers. We have been providing seniors lifestyle and care solutions for over 40 years. The multi-award winning IRT Group manages communities in more than 30 locations across NSW, ACT and QLD, providing care solutions to over 9000 customers.
Innovation on the Sunshine Coast
IRT Innovation IRT Group is an innovator in the aged care industry and has been recognised with a number of awards for its successful ventures into aged care, training and catering.
IRT has a $75 million plan to create communities and opportunities on the Sunshine Coast and in southeast Queensland where people can age without barriers.
IRT was recently named the Employer of Choice at the Australian Business Awards 2014. This is the fifth consecutive year the organisation has claimed an ABA.
In 2012 IRT acquired three retirement properties in Queensland at Bracken Ridge (IRT The Ridge), Buderim (IRT The Palms) and Currimundi (IRT Parklands). IRT’s Queensland strategy also includes a greenfield site at Kawana Forest, where the organisation has gained Federal Government approval to develop a 60bed care centre. One hundred lifestyle units will be developed at the same location. This community will be known as IRT Woodlands. IRT also provides In-Home Care packages throughout the Sunshine Coast community, which complement the organisation’s existing presence across the region.
If you are interested in finding out more about IRT’s In-Home Care program, contact Melissa on 07 5406 0153.
IRT COLLEGE is a specialist training organisation providing aged care courses, which have been developed by a team of aged care industry experts.
Buderim Progress Local retirees are taking advantage of a major expansion at IRT The Palms’ Lifestyle Community at Buderim on the Sunshine Coast. Stages Five and Six of the expansion include 20 new villas and will add to the 37 new homes completed as part of the first four stages. Stage Five of construction, undertaken by local firm Gauld Project Services, is expected to be complete by the end of September.
A virtual college is part of the vision for the future to increase accessibility and flexibility to meet our increasing and diverse learner needs.
The success of the early stages of expansion – and the interest from local retirees – has prompted the move for further expansion at Buderim which is fast becoming one of IRT’s most popular Queensland communities.
The newly established IRT FOUNDATION that will be launched in Queensland on September 29, will have three priority programs a community grants program to fund local initiatives which improve the lives of older people; an education and advocacy program to influence policy and decisions which impact older people; and a research program where will we fund important research into ageing.

by Jasmine Sharpe In 1946 Daryl F. Zanuck of 20th Century Fox said, “Video won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.” If we compare this quote to the success that television has had over the last 70 years, it’s clear that innovation has played a large part in maintaining the success of television, starting from black and white TV, moving to colour, then progressing into the DVD Player, pay TV and now as far as 3D televisions in family homes. The point of this is, innovation starts off as a small creation, but guided with the process of what consumers want and need and adapting to this, something that may not seem so necessary can become a well-used and needed tool, whether it be in business or personal life.
Let’s look at the iPad. Do you have one? Do you need one? A little under 10 years ago there wasn’t much in the way of smartphones – the market was ruled by Nokia, with most people amazed at the fact they could make phone calls and send text messages on the go, not to mention the game Snake that everyone crazed over. Nowadays you can do almost everything on the go thanks to iPhones and iPads. The innovation that Apple has built to revolutionise the way people do everyday activities is forever improving, keeping them at the top of sales charts. Since the first release of iPads in 2010, Apple has sold over 200 million iPads to take the tablet industry by storm. But Apple didn’t just chuck a single iPad in the mix and hope that the first and only iPad suited the needs for people to come in the future, they have ensured that the need for innovation has been addressed. From
the Retina iPad Mini, iPad Air, iPad Mini to the general iPad 4, there is an iPad to suit everyone, and Apple has ensured this. With over one million apps in the App Store and over 60 billion downloads of these apps as of June 2014, it’s more of a question as to ‘what doesn’t the iPad do?’ With a choice of cellular iPad allowing internet access on the go through a prepaid sim or Wi-Fi access only, consumers can choose based on their needs. Not all features on the iPad require internet – such as the camera used to shoot videos and photos, music and any many other apps that you have previously downloaded to your device. Apple has also used innovation to replace the requirement to have other devices by including their feature on iPads for things such as cameras, GPS’s, video cameras, music players and computers. iPads have revolutionised the way people do business by creating the ease of business functions that can be done on the go on the 9.7 inch screen. Emails are sent and received within seconds, five megapixel cameras take photos or videos of anything, voice recorders record speeches or phone calls, notepads take down notes. There are apps such as Dropbox, QR code scanners and e-book readers, music players to listen to inspiring audios and music, GPS to direct where to go and FaceTime to video chat to anyone, anywhere in the world at any time. These are just some features that the iPad allows people to use on the go, making business easier than ever. iPads are leading the pack when it comes to devices for business people, because of their ease of use and portability due to their lightweight design.

Below are three great apps for your iPad (or smartphone)
VICKIE MAGIC SHAVES HER HEAD FOR A CAUSE By Vickie Magic
1. Hootsuite – social media management scheduler As many business professionals and owners would understand, the busyness of each of their days often leaves little time to do simple things such as a load of washing, let alone maintaining a regular, strong social media stream across the diversity of social media platforms such as Facebook, Google +, Twitter and LinkedIn. However, they still understand the importance of keeping a regular presence on these sites. Hootsuite, a social media management scheduler, allows the function of scheduling posts to as many social media websites/accounts as you wish in the single click of a button, allowing you to schedule one post or week’s worth of posts, so you don’t have to frantically remember to post every day. At BM, we use Hootsuite to schedule our posts at the times we know get the most reach, to all our Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook networks. This allows ease of mind so that we don’t have to use extra time on social media every day. 2. Dropbox–file sharing for business Dropbox is the go-to software for sharing your photos, documents, videos and files. What makes Dropbox so convenient for personal and business use is once you save something to Dropbox, it will show up on all your computers, phones and on the Dropbox website, so you can access your files anywhere. In addition, sharing files with friends and family or business partners is just as easy with the click of a button. At BM, we use Dropbox to share files between each other in the office as well as to our designer who works from home, as it allows quick access and we don’t have to refresh our email every two minutes waiting for large documents to send/receive. 3. Audionote - combines note-taking and voice recording software Audionote is an app available on Android and Apple which allows for synchronised note taking and audio recording. Do you ever sit in an important meeting with most of the information going in one ear and straight out the other? You can record your meetings, lectures, classes and interviews and synchronise your notes and audio. The combined features of note taking and audio recording create a tool that saves time, whilst also increasing the quality of notes. During the playback of audio, text and drawings will be highlighted to help you remember the context in which they were taken. You can also tap the notes to seek in the audio, allowing you to instantly hear what you want to.
On Sunday the 28th of September, I have a plan to shave my head to raise money for two causes. This fundraising event will be an afternoon event starting at 4pm. You are invited, can you come? More details on my cause page at www.unityaid.com. The first cause is for my brother in law who has cancer. He and his wife have three wonderful children, but he has been the home carer for their little one who has the rare Rubinstein Taybl Syndrome and hasn’t been well most of her life. He now has cancer and I have a goal to raise as much money as possible for the family to make things a little easier for them. They don’t want me to draw attention to just them so I am not naming them or showing pictures or videos. The second cause I want to raise money for is The Cancer Council Queensland. Lots of people raise money for Breast Cancer and for Leukemia, which of course are equally important, however, I thought I would like to raise money for Cancer Research, to help find a cure. The council says, “Medical research has successfully beaten most disease – it will beat cancer.” Cancer Council Queensland raises funds which are dedicated to eliminating cancer and diminishing suffering from cancer through Research, Treatment, Patient Care, Prevention and Early Detection. One in two Queenslanders will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. Unfortunately, we all know someone who has been affected by cancer. During the whole month of September I want to encourage you to host a dinner party in your house. There are two options for the dinners. The first is that you cook for it. You invite six or seven people to host a dinner party for eight. The plan is that your guest each pays $55 to attend and that two people host the dinner (with their hundred and ten dollars going towards the food). The second option is that we provide you with a chef for the dinner party, he brings all the food and cooks at your house, you just invite a total of eight people. The chef is Santos from Talking Turkey www.talkingturkey.com.au. Santos has agreed to do these events for cost price so that the money raised can go to the cause. In both cases you simply contact me vmagic@ bmmag.com.au to let me know you want to hold a dinner party, we can organise a date in September and then set you up as a reward on our Unityaid fundraiser page, we then send your guests to that page and ask your guest to choose the $55 or $70 dinner party reward. Take a look you will see there are other rewards you can choose as well. Of course you can just donate, plus we have a plan for even more events. These will be updated on our Business Matters Facebook page as well. Business Matters Magazine Sunshine Coast.

businessmentoring enriches business models. Enhanced delivery channels, new operational efficiencies and developing new value propositions are continuous innovation. Electric motor innovation replaced power engines replacing steam. Internet innovated information accessibility, use and storage. Apple innovation, not invention, introduced new value mobile phones – 1000 songs in your pocket and innovated appreciation for lush design. FRONTIER DISRUPTIONS
INNOVATION - LIVING BUSINESS MIND OPEN Innovation is business introducing something new. Innovation creates new value and growth for business and customers. Innovation maintains market relevance and extends business model lifecycle. Innovative evolutions. During the 80’s I designed automated nursery transplanting equipment, innovation then labelled Research and Development. Innovation has shaped business, industry, markets and governments by introducing new value, growth and better mousetraps. INCREMENTAL CONTINUATION The process of innovation is either incremental and continuous or disruptive. Incremental innovation is new versions of existing models or products; new model car, new televisions and new mobile apps. Continuous innovation increases business growth, value to customers and
Disruption innovation is the slayer of status quo, kicking open the doors of establishment. Technology, new business systems, services and products that never before existed create new markets, and in the process kill off existing markets and industries. Video killed the radio stars, websites killed printed Yellow Pages, Go cards killed bus tickets, credit cards killed cheque books. Email kills post offices. Online democratised information and social media pervade and disrupt life and Bitcoin and crowd funding threaten banking status quo. Entrepreneurs dream disruptive innovation. Radical ideas, vision and passion for experimentation, courage to fail and learn, chasing audacious dreams for better value products and liberating markets are disruptive innovative business attitudes. 10 VALUABLE INNOVATIONS 1. Ask customers why – why do they buy from you? Innovation is learning new insights.
2. Value proposition – write a mantra that your apprentice, counter staff and receptionist can promote. 3. Write a new marketing budget – action schedule; measure outcomes. 4. Implement a finance system (Xero), customer database (ACT), bookkeeper if you haven’t already. 5. Implement an invoicing app on smartphone for tradies and new startups. 6. Innovate with a new complimentary product line that connects to what you already sell. 7. Map out your current business model – find innovative opportunity and new efficiencies. 8. Get niched – get out of the clutter. Become an expert, or get a new market to shine in. 9. Prove your website and Facebook generates customers and sales – if they don’t innovate them. 10. If customers aren’t buying, stop and review your business model. Write a new plan – doing the same or nothing is destined to fail. TAFE Queensland East Coast has welcomed a new General Manager, with Paul Wilson joining the organisation to lead the business into the future. The challenge of guiding the largest training provider in the region through an increasingly competitive marketplace is no small task, but is something Mr Wilson is looking forward to.
I am delighted to have been appointed to the position of General Manager, TAFE Queensland East Coast and am eager to lead the organisation through the next period of change, as we enter the new VET market in Queensland.
I’m passionate about making a difference for our community’s students and have a strong background in the education sector, with previous roles including the Chief Executive Officer at Tai Poutini Polytechnic in New Zealand and Community College Gippsland in Victoria. It is this knowledge and expertise I’m able to apply to the position and I share TAFE Queensland’s vision in providing high quality training, recognised and valued by employers throughout the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia and beyond. I feel privileged to be a part of TAFE Queensland as we move into the future and I want this region to create an
experience for our students that we can all be proud of. We have a strong history as the state’s most experienced training provider, with TAFE Queensland delivering VET education for more than 130 years, giving graduates practical skills that lead to employment.
I’m looking forward to this role and to meeting local businesses across the Sunshine Coast to create training solutions for our local employers and students, and to meet the needs of our growing region. We have a lot to be proud of and I know there are exciting times ahead for TAFE Queensland East Coast.

A true blend of business & pleasure with a twist of generosity It’s becoming harder and harder to find independently owned, rapidlygrowing, successful companies with over 50 employees here on the Sunshine Coast, let alone ones with founders who have a genuine altruistic concern for human welfare. Ausfit is one such company which started from humble beginnings back in 1992 and grew from a one-man band, to one of Australia’s leading payment services providers to the Health and Fitness industry. Ausfit grew slowly and steadily until, in 2007, a chance opportunity which was forged off the back of some solid, long-term relationships with some key figures in the Health and Fitness industry, saw the growth of Ausfit skyrocket! The team went on to double and triple in size until today, where the current headcount sits at 51. Marc Osmond and Teena Osborne, Ausfit’s founders, could have taken the business anywhere in Australia however they chose to remain in beautiful Noosa where they, along with their three kids, call home. It also means that Ausfit’s employees get to benefit by combining working for a dynamic and inspiring company, with the lifestyle that the Sunshine Coast offers.
That’s why they introduced People First which is a program that enables Ausfit’s major client, Anytime Fitness, to run fundraising initiatives in their clubs in order to support charities in their communities. Since its inception in October 2013, Ausfit’s People First program, has donated over $24,000 to charity organisations. In addition, Teena is working with local charity, Sunshine Butterflies, to help raise money for a piece of land they are about to purchase in order to construct their own purpose built premises, where they can expand the already amazing work they do improving the lives of children with disabilities. With additional office space now secured in Noosa to provide much needed space for this growing enterprise, Ausfit is going from
strength to strength as they explore other markets through the Ausfit group, which comprises a number of other companies. With this kind of expansion and rapid growth, it’s no wonder they are constantly on the look-out for new talent and recruiting for new roles.
It’s certainly exciting times at Ausfit and a company Marc and Teena are very proud to call their own. Contact 07 5335 9999 for information about Ausfit, including employment opportunities.

Get & Keep Better Clients by Peter Gjersoe
First: ‘Get’
Attend any business get-together these days, and soon the conversation will turn to the subject: “How can I get more and/or better clients?”
There are only two reasons people or companies spend money: to fix or avoid pain. Alternatively, to acquire something desirable.
Just like personal relationships, we may spend time identifying: ‘For my perfect partner, I want them to be so and so,’ and then in detail describe your perfect partner. That’s a good start, but it’s not enough. To be a good match, the following question is equally important: ‘What kind of partner is my perfect partner looking for?’ And unless those standards are met, you had better start developing them to have any chance of competing.
It used to be that we were more willing to spend money on fixing pain than on fulfilling desires. However, today expenditure is more often based on a desire for a feeling more than fixing a pain. Ideally, you should try and meet both opportunities.
It’s no different in business. Buyers today are much more sophisticated and have much less time to consider options. Part of the problem is that we are facing something never experienced before – today there are more sellers than buyers. This means that traditional selling and advertising techniques simply don’t work anymore. Today, especially for a new business, it’s fundamental to invest the time to fully understand and quantify: (1) Who is the ideal client we want, and should be selling to? And (2) How can we present ourselves as our ideal clients’ ideal provider? ‘Get and Keep Better Clients’ is a fourpart model you may want to consider when answering the above questions. And the first rule is: It’s always about the client, never about you!
There are 7+ billion people in the world currently. Not everyone is your prospect, so you need to start identifying who are your ‘better clients.’ Better clients are those who are the biggest beneficiaries of what you offer. Then separate your better client prospects into demographics. This usually means identifying characteristics such as personal (ideal age, gender, income, marital status, etc.), organisational (turnover, employees, structure etc.) and geographic (suburb, town, state, etc.). Then consider what the optimum media channel is to attract their attention, and finally, what type of advertisement attracts your prospects? Next you need to build an attraction model based on building trust before any financial transaction, combined with a best-of-breed client support service. Bottom line: you need to get very clear on exactly who your clients are today and why they would shop at your place.
Second: ‘Keep’ One of the major consequences of living at a time characterised by having many more
providers of products and services than there are clients, is that there is no longer any loyalty given, and an accepted fact is that 82 per cent of clients go elsewhere simply because they do not feel loved. To keep your better clients, you need to start with a review of every component of your business that a prospect or client can come into contact with and ask, “Is the level of quality experienced at this step of the relationship the quality I want my business to be judged by?” Note: consistency and speed of response are more important than anything else. Then review how much and how often you’re showing your clients that you love them, and are making it attractive for them to come back to you again and again.
Third: ‘Better Clients’ At least quarterly you need to review ‘who are my better clients?’ by applying the Pareto or 80:20 principle: make being a client of yours something that’s desirable. Once you’re aware of who your top clients are, you can apply ‘whole of life’ calculations. Based on whole of life, you can much more clearly determine expected profit margins, which enables you to run a better business. Further, it enables you to estimate how much you can invest in client acquisition cost to ensure you only work with the right prospects, and have a high probability of turning them into better clients.
Last: ‘Clients vs. Customers’ Clients are individuals or businesses that make repeat purchases from the same provider because that provider continues to provide the best solution. Successful businesses have clients, not customers. Customers are individuals or businesses who make a purchase based on the best price for a product or service. Next time they need that product or service they’ll look around for the cheapest supplier of that product or service. Supermarkets have customers, not clients.

Shianne Mohommed is a university student studying media at Sunshine Coast University. In December last year she received the news that she was one of the lucky fourteen university and college students selected from Australia and the USA to travel to Cambodia in July to participate in a documentary outreach program. The organisation, Actuality Media, is a documentary production organisation that takes crews of media students to different places around the world, to produce short documentaries about changemakers in the local community and promote change.
Along with two fellow group members, Bayleigh as director, Rebecca as cinematographer and Shianne as the producer, their chosen changemaker was the Soria Moria Boutique Hotel, the first employee-owned hotel in Cambodia.
Shianne and her crew produced, directed, filmed and edited the short film called Soria Moria, which follows the story of an employee named Sina, who, through working at the Soria Moria, is sponsored to attend English school. Furthermore, through the income she receives, she can now support her family and create a better future for her children. Shianne shared that their goal in making this film is that the promotion on the hotel’s website and other media platforms will increase the number of tourists who choose to stay at the Soria Moria. She told us that the more guests who stay at the hotel, the more employees are sponsored to receive a higher education and the more local NGOs are supported. Shianne says, “My experience with Actuality Media has shown me that changemakers, however big or small, can have huge impacts on the community.”
The Soria Moria employs around 40 local Khmer people, many who by working at the hotel are sponsored to attend English school or university. The hotel also supports a large number of local nongovernmental organisations that perform a variety of services and functions in the community, such as raising funds for children to have access to education.

for business with Amanda Oxley, Amanda Hair Design
INNOVATION IN HAIR SALONS ON THE SUNSHINE COAST Amanda Oxley from Amanda Hair Design is one of the award winning colour experts on the Sunshine Coast. Amanda and her international team pride themselves on thinking outside the square, not just in their creative hair colouring and design, but now they have come up with something new for the Sunshine Coast. Amanda having been an educator for Toni and Guy has a Cert IV Training and Assessment and also an Education Teaching Degree, in London she taught at Hairdressing Tafe and is absolutely passionate helping people to be the best that they can be. One of Amanda’s Innovative ideas is the creation of ‘THE SUNSHINE COAST SALON NETWORKING GROUP’. The group will bring like minded hairdressers together to share ideas and support each other by demonstrating new techniques in colouring and styling.
Every hairdresser has a different strength and by sharing knowledge it will improve the quality of hairdressing on the Sunshine Coast. The group will meet once a month in Amanda’s salon to share some wine and nibbles and ideas. They will also get different speakers and various companies, such as Wella demonstrate their products and invite some high profile hairdressers.
and how to use them safely. This course is designed for people who have always had an interest in hairdressing but not had the opportunity to do it for whatever reason, being a parent or having worked straight from school, it is suitable for school leavers or mature age students.
Another innovation Amanda Hair Design has in the pipeline is offering educational workshops to their clients once a month at no charge, she will just ask for a donation towards her favourite cancer charity, a charity that the salon regularly donate to including giving hair.
THE COMPLETE HAIRDRESSER This course is aimed at recently trained hairdressers to give them the confidence, speed and extra skills to perfect their knowledge. We have found through experience that hairdressers that have come straight from college still don’t always have the skills and confidence to provide salon quality and they often sadly lose confidence and end up quitting the industry. We want our industry of highly trained hairdressers to grow.
There will be various workshops; how to use blow dryers, curling irons and straighteners, and things like doing celebrity hairstyles at home.
THE REFRESHER – This course is for hairdressers who might work from home or haven’t been in the industry for a while and want to come back.
It is certainly happening at Amanda Hair Design as Amanda’s third innovation is training courses for hairdressing.

LEE BOND SUNSHINE COAST GRAMMAR SCHOOL
INNOVATION IN SCHOOLS On a worldwide scale, high educational value is currently given to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, (STEM), whereas less importance is placed on sport or the arts. Australian schools provide a broad curriculum and are assessed using a Measurement Framework, which goes beyond literacy, numeracy, science and ICT to include alternative pathways and vocational courses. Rote learning has been a staple component in education systems for decades. Remembering facts and memorising formulas to answer closed questions are techniques used by many professions including law, mathematics, medicine and the military. Learning by rote is the quickest way to grasp a concept and gain technical proficiency, but can be tedious and requires discipline and stamina. Adding a narrative through storytelling helps to provide contextual understanding for learners. Recalling my own schooling, maths and science, whilst excellent subjects, were not high on my learning agenda. Conversely, music and technology fascinated me. They sparked my interest. People are motivated by different subjects, which is articulated by Ken Robinson who identifies a greater need for creativity in education. Using music as an example, most musicians agree that scales, drills and theory are somewhat boring (rote), but are gateways to becoming a proficient instrumentalist. To master their instrument, musicians must dedicate hours of time to practice. Beyond a natural ability, they should foster a sense of teamwork and an awareness of the ensemble to appreciate the power and beauty of music. Creative musicians might compose and innovative ones compose previously unheard genres. So what does innovation look like in schools? Many schools contain pockets of innovation and it’s apparent that the differences within schools are greater than between them. Innovative educators motivate students through curiosity, by personalising the curriculum and encouraging an inquiry-based approach to learning as students discover the world around them. Students are not forcefed with facts and figures, or even the answers, but are given time and space to overcome challenges and explore a range of topics. This is augmented with guidance in the use of technology as a learning tool, to avoid ‘off task’ behaviours.
Innovation and creativity are intrinsically linked. The challenge for schools is to reach a healthy balance across the learning spectrum between traditional command style tasks, which incorporate rote learning, right through to student-oriented projects which embellish knowledge and understanding through self-discovery and creativity. Not everyone is destined to become a doctor, engineer or lawyer. The world also needs digitally literate, versatile and creative people, who can design innovative solutions for a range of issues, whilst systematically managing projects, balancing budgets and communicating effectively.

THE FIVE ADVANTAGES OF DRINKING PH PERFECT WATER IN THE MORNING 1. Drinking water on an empty stomach aids with purification of the colon, making it easier to absorb nutrients. 2. Regularly drinking water increases the production of new blood and muscle cells. 3. Drinking at least a litre of water daily can assist with weight loss – boosting your metabolism by up to 24 per cent in the morning. 4. Regular intake of water helps purge toxins from the blood, which in turn will help clear your skin and make it glow. 5. Your lymph system will love water as it gets back into balance. Your glands fight infection, perform daily functions and balance your body fluids.
THE BEST WAY TO DRINK WATER
If you’re serious about the water you put in your body, then consider using a PH balanced product. Our bodies function better in an alkaline environment, and diseases like cancer and other major ailments all flourish when the body is in an acidic state, so it makes sense to drink water that has a balanced PH level. For optimal health results drink two glasses of water when waking up in the morning. Then drink a glass or two, half an hour before each meal, and two glasses before going to sleep at night It’s as simple as that!

INNOVATION IN REAL ESTATE MARKETING Innovation in real estate marketing, and marketing across the board, is an ongoing evolution in line with continual improvements in today’s technology. There have been some very important advancements in the real estate landscape over the years, with professional photography, property staging, floor plans and virtual and video tours all refining the appeal of properties listed for sale. Unfortunately, the new technology has also allowed for an overflow of gimmicks, stunts, screaming headlines and fanciful promises bashing away at the public senses. Be aware of the differences and think of how you would be attracted to a property. Identify your objective. More than just buying or selling, try and specify the exact reasons for stepping forward and putting yourself on the line. Is it lifestyle based, or future income driven? Is it a long-term family home, or a short-term need only? Understand the property, good and bad. There is no such thing as the ‘perfect property.’ Reconciling the fact that ‘not all second-hand cars come with new tyres’ will let you sleep soundly at night when dealing with the property you love. Understand your target audience. When selling, go back to the days when you purchased the property. What attracted you to it? What stage of life were you in? Has the property changed since then? Solve your buyers’ problems. When you’ve identified your target, put yourself in their shoes. What are their needs? Does my house provide a solution to those needs? Can it be done cost-effectively?
Be real. Don’t apologise for what your property has, or doesn’t have. Understand that everyone has different ideas of value and differing perceptions of the market reality. Be honest and let someone else see what you do! Innovations in technology and marketing are a wonderful thing and can help in many ways, but remember, real estate deals are completed by real people in the real world.

INNOVATION: FINDING A BETTER WAY TO DO PARTNERSHIPS On the day I got married, my father said nine words that changed my life. Dad was a simple man from Elmore in Victoria. He didn’t say much, but would often expose absolute gems of wisdom.
So here’s the room for innovation. Here’s how you can do your partnerships better. Purposefully give your relationships equal attention to marketing, administration, sales, business and financial planning.
“Your success will reflect the relationship with your partner.” I’ve contemplated that concept for many years now and while there’s clearly room for objectiveness around the definition of ‘success’, I’ve found truth in his words. I’ve also found myself investigating to great lengths the nature of ‘relationship’.
Start by constantly asking these questions in relation to your communication with your partners: 1. How does what I just said (or didn’t say) affect the third? 2. How does what I just did (or didn’t do) affect the third?
And now I ask: is there a better way to do relationships in business? Is there an opportunity to be innovative in your relationships? Absolutely! I believe there is and I believe the answer was found approximately 2500 years ago.
3. What can we do to keep improving and building the third? If you are in a partnership of any description, be responsible for both your game and improving the third.
Around 550BC, Pythagoras showed through sacred geometry that when a second circle is mirrored, three shapes are created (see below).
Then Aristotle around 350BC expressed, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. Looking at the image, you see that 1 + 1 can indeed create 3. The third is the yellow shape in the middle. This shape is known as the ‘Vesica Piscis’ and throughout the world it can be found in the symbolism of all religions, as it carries with it the representation of manifestation. The third has a power and an energy that many people in sport, business and life have experienced. Intangible, yet impossible to ignore. When two or more people, groups or companies come together and pool their talents and abilities toward a common purpose, this power is created and therefore can be harnessed.
The concept of 1+1= 3 has been around for a long time. However, there’s more than enough evidence out there to suggest that harnessing this concept in our business partnerships has not made it into the forefront of our minds. Most partnerships don’t last and many due to the fact that the third was not nurtured and strengthened as the business grew. It’s in the relationships where the magic happens and the ‘baby’ is manifested. It’s in the relationships where the success of the partnership will be established and maintained. So if you need to find a better, innovative way of doing things in your partnerships, begin by looking at the third.

ROD RUSSELL SAVVY BUSINESS SALES
MAKE YOURSELF REDUNDANT Most successful businesses are carefully guided by hands-on owner operators who have an in-depth understanding of all facets of their business, including administration, staff roles, customers, sales and marketing, suppliers and service providers.
A buyer’s greatest fear will always be what happens when the previous owner walks out the door, especially if the seller is the only key person with the skills to run the business.
The owner will often have years of experience in their field and is likely to have forged solid relationships with key industry players, and an understanding of competitors’ strengths and weaknesses. This scenario will work until the owner requires time away for family reasons, an extended holiday or if illness strikes. Unfortunately, it’s likely this will occur at some stage, but what happens if they are forced to sell the business? Would a business be attractive to a buyer if it didn’t have key staff in place?
Making yourself redundant will not only protect your asset to ensure it can operate without you, it will also allow you to have time away and concentrate on working on the business rather than in it. More importantly, it will make your business more saleable to a buyer when you want to sell.
To achieve this scenario you need to build a great team and share your knowledge, so they can step up in your absence. This requires plenty of training, multi-tasking and being open with your skills and responsibilities. Get team members involved in the decision making and give them the chance to take the lead and reward them. Acknowledging effort often results in greater commitment. A business opportunity with an owner who has made themselves redundant is generally a very attractive option for buyers – one they are normally prepared to pay a premium for.

MONEY MANAGEMENT SKILLS Money Management skills are an essential life skill. Going through school we learn about our history, maths, English and even cooking and carpentry skills. However what we don’t learn is how to properly manage our money. Unfortunately for most of us, we develop bad money management and spending habits as we go along. This can lead us to a life long struggle with finances and debt. Better money management can help you get in front of your finances so you never have to struggle with money again. Here are a few things you can try to improve your money management skills to avoid a life of financial struggle and bad debt. KNOW WHERE YOU STAND You should be asking yourself a number of questions to get to know your situation better. These questions include: What is your total income? Where is your money is going? How much do you owe on your debts? Who do you owe money to? The number of people who can’t answer these questions is surprising. The best way to develop better money management skills is to first start with monitoring your spending habits for a month by writing down every single transaction. This should really get you thinking about your finances and whether your spending is in control.
Cutting out certain entertainment costs, such as magazines, cigarettes and coffees can help reduce your spend. Budgeting is a crucial part of better money management. ARE YOU IN DEBT? Are you keeping up with your credit card and loan repayments? By paying the minimum repayment amount you are paying maximum interest and fees. You should be paying as much off your loan and credit cards as soon as possible to reduce the lifespan of your debt and therefore reduce the interest you have to pay. The longer you are in arrears the worse your debt becomes and the less options you have available. Act quickly and pull your debt into line while it is still manageable. If you think you may need some budgeting help or debt relief, talk to Debt Relief Hotline for a free confidential chat. Remember, the best advice is to act quickly while you still have options available.
PULL IN THE SPENDING REIGNS Now you are starting to look at how you spend your money, you need to determine whether you are spending more than what you are earning. If your expenses exceed your income, you are going to have to use money management skills to make some serious cut backs and prioritise your expenses. Make sure you always have enough cash for your bills and financial commitments. BUDGETING By creating a budget, you can see exactly where your money is going, and if you need to slow down your spending, it will help you identify areas you could cut back on.

HOW DO WE MOVE FROM TALKING INNOVATION, TO DOING INNOVATION? In a time when both customers and the business environment are constantly changing and evolving, a team who are skilled will be more able to adapt and keep up with these changes.
Providing training and supporting the development of your team are essential elements in becoming and staying innovative. Training provides the opportunity for you and your team to step back from the day-to-day business operations and consider best practice, learn from others and work on the business rather than in it. The right training will develop the skills, capabilities and knowledge of your team and enable them to engage in a wider range of responsibilities and tasks within the business. The result is continuous improvement and the benefits you are likely to realise are:
However, delivering these outcomes requires a considered approach to training. Simply passing through a training program does not ensure improvement or lead to innovative outcomes. The type and quality of training your team receives is very important. To create a training program that works, you need firstly to identify skill gaps. A training needs analysis will help you identify opportunities within the business, understand which skills need to be improved and categorise the different skill levels of the team. You can also use this opportunity to measure the innovation capacity of your team – do they have the will and skill to innovate? Once these key areas are understood, you’re in a strong position to source the best training providers to assist in establishing a program of learning that moves beyond functional training and delivers the outcomes you require. Training and development are an investment in the future of your business. In the words of Bill Gates, “In a changing world, education is the best preparation for being able to adapt.”

WHAT IS INNOVATION? Innovation put simply, is finding a different or better way of doing something. How important is this concept to each of us in everyday life? It is of paramount importance! You only have to stop for a second and think about daily duties such as preparing food, washing clothes and transporting ourselves around to appreciate how much simpler our lives are compared to centuries ago. All of these mod cons that we’ve grown to rely on have arisen through invention and innovation. Today, I believe that innovative ideas are occurring at an accelerated rate thanks to technology and the ability to share information around the world so rapidly. In completing a little bit of research into innovation, I discovered the three key components to the innovation process as identified by the American robotics engineer Joseph Engelberger. These components are fundamentally:
end result, businesses become more productive. This is beneficial for all parties involved – the business, its staff and the end consumer. I also learned during my research that it’s possible for businesses to encourage and foster innovation in their staff. Changing business processes, giving staff access to technology, different management styles and allowing staff to work on any aspect of the business (not just their immediate job) are all ways that businesses can foster an environment of innovation. Large companies that are considered leaders in their field, such as

RESTRAINTS OF TRADE A business may spend considerable time, effort and resources developing a relationship with its customers. Such relationships are an integral part of the good will of a business. It is entirely appropriate for a business to then take steps to protect such matters in the form of a post-employment restraint.
then necessary to ensure that the contractual terms go no further than is necessary to protect that interest.
The historical starting point for the matter is that the common law would find such agreements unlawful for public policy reasons. Contracts should not have the effect of sterilising a productive labour market. The historical position is not absolute. A restraint in an employment contract will be upheld by the court as long as it goes no further than is reasonable to protect the legitimate interests of the employer. The matter requires an assessment of two issues – the nature of the interest and the extent to which the employer has sought to protect that interest.
This ordinarily involves an assessment of the activities being restrained, the geographical area of the restraint and the period of the restraint. It is these issues which most often engage the attention of the court. In Queensland, if a court considers that the restraint is broader than is necessary to protect the interest in question, it will not redraft the contract to make it enforceable. If the clause cannot be saved by severing the offending provisions, the restraint will be unenforceable as a matter of law.
The legitimate interests which an employer may seek to protect are matters such as trade secrets, confidential information and customer connections. With customer connections, it is often the case that employees will develop strong bonds with customers of the business such that, if the employee were to leave the enterprise and move to a competitor, the customer may be motivated to follow. Accordingly, not every employee will have the requisite connections with a customer base to create a legitimate interest to be protected. Where the employee is in a position to influence such relationships, a court may be minded to enforce a restraint which not only protects confidential information and solicitation, but prevents the employee from taking up a new business opportunity within a period of time.
Having established a legitimate interest that may be protected by a post-employment restraint, it is Mitch Devine
The drafting therefore of post-employment restraints is a matter which business should consider as a means of protecting any confidential information, good will and customer connections which it develops. However, care is needed in the drafting of such matters to ensure that they are broad enough to protect such interests, but not so broad as to become unenforceable. 5-4-3-2-1....ENGAGE! Though each of us is unique, there are many things that make us very much the same. One aspect is how we as humans engage with our world through the five senses. Sight, Smell, Taste, Touch and Hearing. As a business owner, it can be useful to remind yourself of this when developing your brand, product/service and operational procedures to improve customer engagement opportunities. Some businesses rely heavily on engaging customers through one sense over another. A restaurant may have lovely decor and relaxing music, but if the food tastes like your uncle’s footy socks, I doubt any ongoing customer engagement will develop.
Whereas, I have patiently lined up to eat at one of the most visually unappealing, noisy and cramped, hole-in-the-wall eateries that has ever failed a Council inspection to savour the best seafood laksa known to man!

Why? Because that business knows their core business (food) and which sense to prioritise (taste). They may lose some customers to the empty restaurant next door with the spacious banquet room and comfortable seats, but it’s obvious where the majority of the market prefer to eat. Now, not every business can offer the fragrance of flowers, the sounds of live music or a meal cooked by Heston. However, every business has something to offer to engage with their customers. At the least, the humble business card (sight and touch) is a VERY cost effective tool, often overlooked because of its simplicity and broad usage. However, with some simple enhancements to design, stock type, texture and thickness, colour coverage and finishing treatments, a business card can make a MAJOR impact at the first engagement opportunity. So, is your business card engaging your target market? Or should it be retired due to lack of sensory interest?

FIVE KEYS TO A GREAT EVENT Organising an event should be easy. Book a venue, create the agenda and invite people! Creating a great event that achieves your objectives, is value for money and doesn’t take forever to organise takes a lot more skill.
lots.” Sadly, people forget most presentations! As a rule, you should allow 50 per cent of the time for group interaction – casual chats during breaks or guided group exercises. Adults learn from participation.
Here are five ideas that will help improve your next event:
EQUIPMENT – I mentioned before that venue equipment is critical. Today the standard is high quality data projection and screen, flipcharts, power to desks, internet access, use of computers, tablets and variable lighting. I’m shocked when venues don’t have good internet access (or charge a premium).
PURPOSE – As Steven Covey once said, “Start with the end in mind.” Often when I ask a company their purpose I will hear, “It’s a planning session – we hold them every year”, or “A training workshop for our new products.” These certainly describe the process but not the purpose. I’m keen to understand what the planning is for – perhaps improve next year’s revenue by 10 per cent. What about the new product? Gain 23 per cent market share in 12 months. These start to describe the purpose and will drive your event – who you invite, the topics and the theme you need to communicate to your team. VENUE – The environment you choose has a great impact on your results. Offsite venues provide better reflection and fewer interruptions.
A venue with all the equipment puts the attention on the content, not trying to get technology working. A well-catered event feeds your crew and adds to the enjoyment of the day. SESSION TIMES/BREAKOUTS – The best events have lots of group interaction. A mistake is to jam the agenda with presentations. Often I hear, “It’s the only time we have everyone together so we need to cover
AGENDA AND CONTENT – Use your purpose and the ideas from above – lots of breakouts and group sessions. Use the internet in sessions for research or showing examples. As a guide, you should break the day into three sessions of two hours each and aim for one or two key topics in each session, remembering to keep lots of time for group work. This structure also leaves time at the end of the day for work catch-up or networking.

Innovation through by Paul Barrs It seems to be the buzzword for the time. Innovate. Be different. Set yourself apart. And yes, these are great business strategies and ideal if possible. But before you go ahead and set your plans in place, I have one more simple suggestion. Let me explain…. Last week, while having coffee with a friend, I listened while he shared with me his frustration at how one company whom he’d been dealing with seemed to be ignoring him. It was a customer complaint, something which he wasn’t happy with and hadn’t been happy with for some time. He’d sent an email to them. He’d contacted them through their social media Facebook page. He’d even tried phoning, but they were a big company. They seemed to have better things to do. Whether or not they’d agree with his dispute is irrelevant. The fact was simple. The systems that they had in place to deal with customer complaints were pretty much non-existent. Let’s compare that to my own situation two weeks earlier, where after attending a conference on the Gold Coast, I returned home to check my credit card statement and noticed an extra debit of $13.50, two days after the conference. Of course, being curious, knowing that I hadn’t knocked off any of their cups, glasses, or silverware, I rang them to find out what the charge was for. It took a little while to get through to the right person, but once there he sorted through his financial records and asked me, “Did you happen to have lunch around the corner, at XYZ Tavern?” I said, “Yes, I did.” He said, “We own ISSUE 5656 ISSUE 6464
it. That’s why the charge showed up as us.” Ah. Now, I understand.
Occasionally? From time to time?
There was an opportunity there for that situation to go quite wrong. But instead it was handled with care and dealt with swiftly and efficiently. I call these things customer service 101, but it seems to me, more and more often, these things become moments of excellence. Why? Because so few of us actually do them!
I do. At least, I try to. Even I’ve fallen short
Do what? Provide awesome, unbelievable, incredibly awe-inspiring customer service. Yes, we all like to think we can. But in today’s age, with the internet, computers and smart technologies, we’ve become less connected with our customers when we should be closer; and we respond in kind.
So my call to action today for you is
Tell me this – what’s your gut feeling? Should a business’s Facebook page be used for communication? For understanding? For sharing? For engaging? The answer is simple – “Yes, all of the above.”
the sale has been completed, after the
I attended a business lunch recently where the speaker shared this concept: their business’s Facebook page was for LISTENING. Ah. What a concept! Innovation through excellence. Doing what we should be doing, but have forgotten to do at the same time. How often is it, when you finish dealing with a customer, that you then send them a survey or a questionnaire form to say, “Hi. Thanks very much. How did we do? Please let us know.” Rarely?
How about with every customer? in this, which is why I say in this matter of customer service, we can innovate with excellence just by DOING IT! We’ve fallen short of the bar. We haven’t measured up to the mark. Though in our hearts we feel we have, sadly it’s rarely true. this: when you take a moment to sit down and have that morning tea or afternoon coffee… stop… pause just a few moments with pen and paper and ask yourself, “Where are the touch points with my customers after the sale?” What is it that you do with your customers once money is in your pocket? Do you still care for them? Do you still look after them? Do you have any of your innovations on that back end? Or are they all up the front, looking for new business? Someone once said to me, “Paul, if you want to be successful in business, you have to be different.” So here’s my challenge to you in the areas of customer service, where we are all sadly lacking. Be different. Be awesome and innovate with excellence.

WAKE UP TO THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE! You have heard the phrase “how to stand out in a crowd” many times, I’m sure. Why does it matter to stand out in a crowd, to be different? Because it makes you memorable! All businesses compete and constantly search for that extra bit that makes a difference. They want to be remembered for something – to stand out in people’s minds.
businesswakeup What’s the difference that makes the difference in you – and your business? Some people stand out by changing their appearance; being seen wearing hats or colourful jackets. The outside can catch someone’s eye initially – but it’s what’s inside that makes the real difference.
What about your business? What’s the difference that makes the difference in your business? Is it truly great customer caring and service? Is it a fabulous product that really makes a difference to people’s lives? Is it that you’re fantastic listeners and really take time to understand the customers’ needs?
People who are comfortable with themselves, who like and love themselves, are always those we want to be around. They feel good about themselves and can then focus on making others feel good. THAT is what makes the difference! If you focus on making other people FEEL good about themselves, you’ll be successful.
Being different, innovating and embracing change will all make your life, and your business, develop and grow. Work out your unique qualities – what’s the difference that makes the difference between success and mediocrity in your business?

Tourism, sports and major events is one of our seven high-value industry sectors identified in the Regional Economic Development Strategy, (REDS), as a sustainable industry which will add to, not subtract from, our lifestyle and image. In recent years Council has worked hard to attract events such as Tough Mudder, the Ironman 70.3 and the National Touch Football Championships. And we have no better promotional
mayoralbusiness champion than our economic development – tourism, sports and major events portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray. We have appointed a Major Events Board comprising some of the most visible names in their field, who are voluntarily putting some of their valuable time into developing strategies for increasing our share of events across the spectrum. Our many regional and national events tally is now being joined by world events, like the World Outrigger Sprint Titles and the Ironman 70.3 World Championships, along with huge internationally recognised national events like the Australian Surf Titles. In the REDS we talk about our natural advantages, and as far as these are concerned, when it comes to attracting tourism and major events we have an embarrassment of riches. We have an all-year great climate, excellent venues, topdrawer facilities for training and performing, clean beaches, quality accommodation, and roads and the airport to get here easily. But perhaps most importantly, we have the lifestyle and the image which reflects so well upon so many of these events – which means the performers and the

Under REDS, Council will continue to work hard to attract more major events, and it’s worth remembering much of the tourism and events levy goes into this effort. By the time you read this, we will have hosted the first-ever arrival of a cruise ship – in this case P&O’s Pacific Pearl – at Mooloolaba. P&O is very pleased the first cruise exSydney was booked out quickly, and have at least four more cruises to Mooloolaba scheduled for 2015 and 2016. ‘Booked out’ as far as Pacific Pearl is concerned means 1800 passengers will be on board, many of whom will disembark to enjoy all that the Sunshine Coast can offer – that’s a major economic boost for this region in anyone’s language.
The word is we might see cruises ex-Melbourne arriving soon, too – watch this space. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson keeps BM readers up to date on what’s happening on the Coast.

Complete with a scenic and accessible test-track around Kawana Lake, the experts at Electric Bike Centre take the time to recommend the perfect e-bike for each and every customer. With no licence required, the cycling experience with an electric bike is both unique and memorable. Cyclists can enjoy freedom and the outdoors more often, knowing that they’re in the hands of what have been labelled ‘the safest bikes in the world’. How much or little the motor kicks in is entirely up to who’s behind the wheel; commuters can enjoy a sweatfree ride to work, while off-road cyclists can opt for a gentle push uphill. Catering to every category of cyclist, Electric Bike Centre’s superstore stocks premium-quality cruiser, mountain, cargo, folding and commuter e-bikes. For added stability, e-trikes are also available at Electric Bike Centre and make the perfect choice for leisurely rides around the Coast’s scenic pathways. accessories that help to personalise every purchase. Electric bike conversion kits are readily available and are already becoming a popular option amongst consumers who are looking for an inexpensive upgrade. Owner and director Daniel Whiting commented, “Conversion kits are a great, cost-effective option for cyclists who want to keep their bike, but want the option of using electric power. The installation of the kit is surprisingly easy and gives brilliant pedal assistance to any bike.”

Bartercard: helping businesses grow on the Sunshine Coast for over 22 years Thanks Bartercard for the last four years. I have bought so many fantastic things on Bartercard including tickets to motivational speakers, holidays, computers, even a pedigree kitten. I pay rent on Bartercard and just recently purchased a property paying the deposit on Bartercard. I can honestly say it has been great for my business. Thanks again for your service and always smiling demeanour.
The more we investigate the opportunities in Bartercard the more doors open, especially within the hospitality sector. Taking the time to better understand the Bartercard system has shown us how to access revenue previously lost in room nights that would otherwise have expired valueless. Bartercard for us simply means more business.
Vickie Magic Editor, Business Matters Magazine
Bill Darby Director, Rumba Beach Resort
I’m a firm believer in the concept of bartering and saving cash for better uses and I believe that using Bartercard has helped us to keep ahead of the competition and improve our business. We now primarily use Bartercard to win cash contracts as it’s an effective method to close a deal.
I use Bartercard trade dollars to satisfy my travel bug, but I do recognise the value of using them in a way that benefits me financially. I spend trade dollars on services for my rental property that are tax deductible and also allows me to offer a well maintained property to maximise cash rental returns

JUMPING THE RIVER OF INNOVATION Innovation is like a mountain river. If you stand on the river bank watching, you will never get anywhere. If you jump in, the ride will be bumpy and the water may be incredibly cold, but if you survive the journey, you will be way ahead of your competitors. The conservative, big business incumbent may find this ride too frightening and risky, and prefer to set up camp on the river bank. The cold hard truth is, however, that the people who sleep on the river bank every night will still be there a year later. The aggressive innovators will be two thousand miles ahead, having travelled a few miles an hour, day by day, month by month. Customers will stop visiting the river bank, way up in the mountains, and choose the cool new option that is floating past their town. In this way, fortune favours the innovators. Investment banker, strategic advisor, sustainability expert and entrepreneur Nigel Lake has just released a new book called The Long Term Starts Tomorrow, which details innovative thought processes based on the wisdom of experience.
This book is for anyone who wishes to jump into the mountain river and conduct business with innovation, passion and integrity. Lake distils the ideas born out of twenty-five years of living and working in business and finance within the top 30 economies in the world. The Long Term Starts Tomorrow will help you make innovative short-term business decisions that stand the test of time. www.nigellake.com
