Editor’s Note with Vickie Magic
WOW – The feedback from our last issue has been nothing short of amazing, thanks so much for letting us know how much you love the changes we are making to the magazine. We just love hearing from you. We have had a pretty tough five weeks in the BM camp to be honest. Jazzy had her tonsils out, Jen hurt her back, I hurt my back, Magic broke his arm and our brother-in-law David lost his fight with cancer and left behind a wife and three very young children. So yeah, tough is probably an understatement. What I learnt this month above all else is just how absolutely incredibly amazing Mr Magic is, wow we had so many people put their hand up to help us with delivery, most for love, but honestly we are so grateful to every single one of you - thank you Sunshine Coast, the community spirit we have here is second to none. But the even bigger thing about that, I realised when delivering magazines myself for just one day is just how hard it is and just how different our delivery is. We deliver one or two copies to almost every single business (that has a shopfront and that wants the magazine), just one or two and then about five or six to cafes or restaurants. This takes two whole weeks, and as Mr Magic wrote the lists (yes the lists I have been asking for for five years, another good thing to come of this), I realised that he knows every single business. One to this place, two to this place, none to this place and so on, he knows every nook and cranny. It is absolutely incredible and I realised that one of our biggest points of difference in the market place is because of him, yes of course we have to deliver a great product that people love and want to read, but his delivery is such a huge part of our success and now I truly know how hard a job he does. I used to laugh and sometimes say that he didn’t do much, he kind of only really had to work for two weeks, just doing the photography and the books and debt collection in the other three weeks wasn’t much. HOW WRONG I WAS. They say you can’t ever know how a man’s feet feel until you have walked a mile in his shoes, well I have to tell you I couldn’t get those shoes off fast enough and I just want to say THANK YOU MAGIC, you are AMAZING and you DO AN AMAZING JOB, so the next time you see Mr Magic (with the long black hair and the cute cheeky smile) deliver your copy of Business Matters Magazine, don’t forget to tell him he truly is MAGIC.

MINDFULNESS in Business BY STEVE GOODMAN
You probably remember your mother telling you to ‘mind your own business’ and those were wise words to live by - today there is a new wisdom sweeping boardrooms the world over; it’s known as mindfulness in business. The concept of mindfulness traces its roots back to Buddhist philosophers of the 5th Century BC. It is a way of ‘living in the now,’ of being aware of each nuance of each moment, your feelings, your thoughts, your physical sensations and the environment around you. Today, mindfulness has been finding its way into everything from stress reduction techniques, to fitness, to parenting, and now the corporate sector is also becoming aware of its positive impact on productivity. Benefits of a Mindful Workplace Mindfulness, which is most often associated with ‘eastern’ techniques such as yoga, meditation, or Tai Chi, is now proving to be as valuable a skill to improve your business success, as it is to improve your mind, body and spirit!
6 ISSUE 73
A recent study by the University of Toronto found that business owners, and high income earners who expressed a high degree of mindfulness, were less likely to make risky business decisions. They looked more at the big picture, and less on gaining immediate gratification at work, and were less likely to ‘get drunk on success.’ The list of large corporations that have adopted mindfulness programs as part of their work environment and ethics, reads like the Who’s Who of 21st Century innovators - Google, Apple, Sony, and Ikea, just to name a few. Mindfulness is used as a medical therapy for stress reduction, and the treatment of anxiety and addictive behaviours. Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, or MBCT, as it is called, has been proven to promote awareness, resilience, better problem solving and decision-making skills. Individuals who have undergone MBCT for various reasons, reported ‘doing better at work.’ They experienced improved job performance, reduced
absence rates and an ‘improved ability to take on new tasks and learn new things.’ It is no wonder then, that the business world is interested in incorporating mindfulness techniques on a grander scale. How does Mindfulness Work? At its most basic level, mindfulness is very effective at reducing stress. Anything that reduces stress makes for a better work environment. But mindfulness can achieve more than that. At the 2014 Cranfield University’s Mindfulness at Work seminar, Jeremy Hunter, an academic and mindfulness consultant, said that mindfulness programmes can make for more resilient employees and more ethical leaders, and that a resilient workforce is necessary to build a flexible, resilient and successful business. Mark Williams of Oxford University who founded the practice of MBCT, said this discovery of greater empathy, compassion and more ethical behaviour, is a logical outgrowth of mindfulness training. In MBCT, people learn from the ground up to be more aware of feelings of anger and negativity, and the damage they do to their own selves, mentally and physically. So, naturally, they become less likely to be negative towards others. The business world is becoming far more project and task oriented. A recent study of the impact of mindfulness training on IT workers found that mindfulness can make you better at ‘serial-tasking.’ The researchers concluded that mindfulness helped those in the study to ‘concentrate more deeply and to switch focus between objects of attention more fluidly’. Other researchers have found that mindfulness improves your brain’s ‘plasticity,’ that it actually increases the density of grey matter in the regions of your brain linked to learning, memory, emotion regulation, and empathy. Mindfulness Techniques What are the techniques of mindfulness? They do vary, and there are specific exercises more tailored to the workplace, but what they all have in common are breathing techniques, and ways to become more aware of your physical and emotional sensations. One common technique is the ‘raisin exercise.’ This simple exercise introduces you to the concept with food, and slowly using all of your senses, to really ‘experience’ it. The idea is to use all of your senses to observe the raisin in great detail, from the way it feels in your hand to the way its taste bursts on your tongue. This exercise is intended to help you focus on the present moment, and it can be done with many foods from raisins, to apples, to jelly beans. There are some who argue that the very idea of mindfulness in the workplace goes against its origins that were rooted in more spiritual and less materialistic ideals. However, on the other hand, there are those who would say that any mindfulness exercise is a good one. Becoming more aware of yourself, your surroundings, your feelings and actions towards others, is putting you on a path to a more mindful existence; and that can have positive improvements on your life, whether you are introduced to the techniques in a fitness room, or a conference room. f
Authentic Content = Business Success! by Lauren O’Connor We all have one goal; we want the attention of consumers. As an end result, this is easy to ascertain but what you need to discern is whether your business is worthy of the attention you desire. Every business owner thinks they have something unique and special to say about their business, so the question is how do you plan to compete with that? Through the creation of an authentic and genuine content strategy, you can permeate your target audience with your desired branding message. Some tried and true techniques to help you accomplish this are: • Don’t tell your customers that they need your service/ product, show them. Take them on a journey which will lead them to make the discovery that yes, you are what they have been looking for. Human behaviour inherently means that if you tell someone to do something, they won’t want to do it, but if they come to the realisation on their own, then they own the decision. • Good content doesn’t just answer questions, it gets people thinking and asking even more questions. It raises awareness of the value of your service/product and the customers’ resolve to have/need it. If your content can stir conversation, then it’s doing its job. It means it’s revolving around the customer. Always remember, content without direction will not help you with your return on investment. Invest in a strategic content plan, follow it and reap the rewards.

MIND OVER MATTER?
Nice idea! But it’s not that simple... with Ted Fitzgerald
David Hume, 18th century Scottish philosopher, suggested ‘Reason is the slave of the passions!’ French philosopher Rene Descartes gave us ‘Cogito ergo sum’ (Latin..I think therefore I am!). Walt Disney said ‘If you can dream it…you can do it!’ Like all successful entrepreneurs, he was pointing out that passion rather than reason drives most human behaviour. The heart decides what it wants and reason (i.e. the mind) has to achieve it and tidy up any mess. So how might this ‘heavyweight philosophy’ be put to work commercially? A good start would be to read some papers on applied psychology available online. Particularly the work of Abraham Maslow. The concept is displayed as a pyramid, a ‘hierarchy of needs’, noting people tend to satisfy needs in a given order starting with basic ones before focusing on the more complex. Levels one to four are driven by the desire to be healthy and avoid threats or problems. With safety relatively assured, Level five and six are about growth, and ‘embracing opportunities and fulfilling dreams’.
The need for self-actualisation
Experience purpose, meaning and realising all inner potentials. Esteem Need The need to be a unique individual with self-respect and to enjoy general esteem from others. Love and Belonging Needs The need for belonging, to receive and give love, appreciation and friendship. Security Need The basic need for social security in a family and a society that protects against hunger and violence. The Physiological Needs The need for food, water, shelter and clothing.
8 ISSUE 73
● Level one focuses on warmth, food, health and reproduction ● Level two on physical and financial security, health and wellbeing ● Level three on family, friendship, community, a sense of ‘tribe’ ● Level four on recognition, status, prestige, and self-respect ● Level five on the desire to become the most that one can be ● Level six seeking some higher goal outside oneself, in altruism and spirituality Maslow helps understand why customers choose one brand over another. Smart firms don’t sell ‘features’ at the bottom of the pyramid. They create brand loyalty by connecting customers with the highest levels. Their products and services fulfil higher-level needs of esteem, prestige, social interaction, and self-actualisation. They become irreplaceable in the mind of customers. The key to brand loyalty is to have customers always believe (and tell the world) that your brand has no equal! Think Apple! The concept is also relevant to motivating staff so they feel valued and passionate for the business to succeed. When employees grow to higher levels they are more effective and their growth produces skills, behaviours and wisdom directly transferable to effectiveness in the business. For instance, you can’t motivate someone to achieve a sales target (Level four) while they are struggling with marriage problems (Level three). Or you cannot expect someone to work well as a team member (Level three) if they’re having their house repossessed (Level two) or suffering health problems (Level one). So to put ‘mind over matter’ to work, it helps to know both customer’s needs and wants, and the underlying motives that drive their purchases. These underlying motives are the gold mine that clever marketers strive to analyse, understand and tap into. The key question then becomes which customer group should you be targeting and how should you go about it? e

Is Car Gap Insurance Worth It? Car gap insurance is a special kind of insurance that covers the shortfall or ‘gap’ between what you owe on a loan and the payout amount if your car is written off as a total loss, or stolen, during your insurance coverage period. Let’s say you owe $20,000 on your car loan. A huge truck slams into your parked car and completely writes it off….you are safe! The truck driver’s insurer will pay $15,000 agreed value. Gap insurance will make sure you’re not out of pocket by $5,000. Car gap insurance will settle the loan, and you won’t have to pay back a loan on a car that’s written off and no longer have any more. How do I get it? Firstly, you’ll need to start a loan contract. You’ll also need to take out a comprehensive car insurance policy.
be staggering. It’s peace of mind for borrowers who are concerned their comprehensive insurance payout won’t settle the loan. It significantly reduces and eliminates the risk of your own finances being used to pay off a car that you can no longer use. In some cases, gap insurance potentially provides you with additional funds to purchase a new vehicle and protects your credit history from any negatives. Usually, the premium covers you for the full term of the loan and can be included in the amount being lent out.
Remember, always speak to a Finance expert.

MIND OVER Matter BY VICKIE MAGIC
This issue’s theme is ‘Mind over Matter’. For those who know me, and I guess those of you who have been reading the magazine over the last few years, you know this is the stuff I love the most. I am an avid believer in the fact that we create/ design/ make our lives whatever we choose. Sometimes we think that others are making us do/be or act a certain way, or that an outside influence or thing is the reason for our mood/ happiness or success. It is hard to really understand that we are the reason for all of it, that it is not what THEY did or didn’t do, it’s always what WE did or didn’t do, or did or didn’t say, or did or didn’t choose. The power of choice is a gift that takes some of us a lot longer than others to see, even though it is staring us right in the face. So if you think you are influenced by something outside of you, I challenge you to THINK AGAIN. Whatever we say is OUR truth, so how can we change what we say to be the truth we want, not the one we think it is; the one we don’t particularly like, but the one we do want, the future we want to create for ourselves. Things happen in life not just to me, but to you too, to everyone. We choose the ‘what then’. We choose to be the potato, the egg, or the coffee. What? Ok, so the potato, the egg and the coffee each come up against the exact same adversity, boiling hot water. The potato becomes soft and just falls apart, the egg becomes hard and then cold, but the coffee actually changes the water into something beautiful. My goal in life is to be the coffee. We choose if we become the potato, the egg or the coffee and sometimes that is pretty difficult. The outcome, the
‘what then’ lies not in the adversity, but in us, we choose, even though sometimes we feel like we have no choice. It comes down to Mind over Matter – Mind over Matter simply means that we use our minds to select what matters. We can hold on, hold on, hold on, get bitter, get bitter, get twisted, get angry, get even, or we can choose to ask ourselves the question, ‘Do I want to be right, or do I want to be happy’? Being right is highly overrated, being happy is easier than you think. Sometimes people say they are happy however they are unhappy about this, or unhappy about that, but overall they are happy. Is that you? Once again I challenge you to look at every single situation and remember that it’s MIND OVER MATTER in every area of our lives. And don’t forget one of my absolute favourite sayings ever ‘BE WHO YOU ARE AND SAY WHAT YOU FEEL BECAUSE THOSE WHO MATTER DON’T MIND AND THOSE WHO MIND DON’T MATTER’. What can you do? For starters think about your life in general. Look for the ‘what’s right’, list five things that are great in your life. Then think about all the important people in your life, both family and friends. List five things about those people that you totally love. Forget about looking for and asking yourself what’s wrong with them, ask yourself instead what you love about them. Once you take the time to do this, it will help you pause and look for the great things about these people and this helps you forget about the ‘what’s wrong’ and instead surround yourself with the ‘what’s right’ - REMEMBER IT’S MIND OVER MATTER! f

digital business with Greg Searle, Anypoint
The Build - ing Quick recap.
Designing for Growth and Flexibility
You have an idea, tossed it around, tested it in the field, planned what needed to be done and obtained funding to build and bring your idea to market. If you have been tracking along with my articles, that process has taken three months.
This leads to the second issue, the Architecture of the solution. An application designer will generally select either a ‘use what is out there and cobble together’ approach, or a ‘develop a core and add layers approach’. The two diagrams below represent these two approaches.
How did you go? How did you work out what it would cost to build and bring your Digital Product to market? Did you find that when you received quotes back for the ‘build’ they ranged from less than $5,000 to anything up to say $50,000. That’s a big range. If you are like most people the contract was awarded to a company/mate/person that was at the low end of the range. Here is a sanity check. Do you think a $10,000 investment in the build with a $30 per month hosting fee can support a business that generates say $5 million per annum? It can’t. So what is the ‘gotcha’ here? There are two issues that are likely to cause an underestimation on how much it will cost to build your product. Understanding the Scope of the Digital Solution The first is that you may think you are building an all in one website with an ‘off the shelf’ CMS like Wordpress, Joomla etc. and a few ‘plug-ins’ but this is not the case. Too often you are quoted on just the website with some ‘plug-ins’ to manage the Application functionality and a few interfaces. You really need the Four Pillars of Digital Business:
Brief Case Study from a Real Start-up. A follow-up with a known start-up revealed the following scenario. First year contracted a single developer to build the system, approximately $7,000. Developer decided to pursue another opportunity, the company was forced to find a second developer to continue with the work, another $10,000. This Developer started to dictate product direction contrary to founder’s desires, terminated services and found a third supplier, another $20,000. This supplier did not have the resources or capacity to continue with the product development, which led to current developer. Our start-up is now completely vulnerable, has little control of product and security of corporate IP, has spent another $20,000 with more to spend. The message, find a developer that will take ‘skin in the game for lower price’, make sure they are LOCAL so you can spend face to face time working through the design and functionality and most importantly, the solution can SCALE. Finally, make sure you have a realistic BUILD BUDGET.

mayoral business
with Mark Jamieson, Sunshine Coast Mayor
Shaping our future Consistently delivering a strong financial result is arguably the greatest responsibility of this Council. Why? Because the decisions we make today have the potential to affect our community, our environment, our economy and our lifestyles tomorrow and for generations to come. Council’s 2015-16 budget is based on sound financial management and a foresight very few councils have been willing – or indeed able – to even imagine. This is a budget that has the community of today and tomorrow at its very heart. A budget that protects and enhances our environment – for without our environmental assets, what is the Sunshine Coast? It maintains and develops our vibrant and distinct communities, focuses on creating opportunity and prosperity, and encourages new businesses to set-up and create jobs, especially for our younger people. In 2013, the region set itself a goal to increase household incomes to above the state average – to give all residents more employment options, and put more money into your weekly pay packets. It unacceptable the average household income on the Sunshine Coast is some 20 per cent lower than the state average. Council’s $588 million budget in 201516 is all about shaping our future. At its very core is a focus on delivering infrastructure and services to cater for our residents and for a growing population. It provides the focus and investment needed to continue our efforts to build the opportunities and prosperity of the region. This budget is squarely focused on the essentials. Over the next 12 months, we have allocated: • $98 million to maintain, renew and replace local roads,
bridges, pathways and our extensive stormwater system. That includes $17 million for our road reseal program. • $34 million for libraries, galleries and community facilities. • $40 million for economic initiatives, including supporting major events, airports and holiday parks and to assist businesses already here and attract new ones. • $58 million to maintain, renew and upgrade council’s hundreds of parks, gardens and sporting facilities. • $74 million to the environment, protecting our greatest assets including our beaches, foreshores bushland and our way of life and establish clean energy projects. • $6 million for community events and grants placing a premium on arts and sports, and giving a helping hand to our groups, associations and clubs who help others. • And $32 million to begin works at SunCentral Maroochydore which will provide opportunities for existing Sunshine Coast businesses to expand, attract new investment to our region and generate up to 10,000 new jobs over the project’s life span. We expect to see the first stage precinct released to market by the end of the year. It is no secret that the Sunshine Coast is writing one of its most important and exciting chapters in our history and creating a future where we can live, work and play in the most beautiful place on Earth.

MINDSET
Management BY PAUL BARRS
Watching some tennis recently I found it compelling viewing as one of the up-and-coming young players began to chop away at a more experienced veteran and former world number one player half way through the match.
He was just one point away from claiming a vital set that would have put him in the driver’s seat. Instead, he lost the next three service points with double faults and lost the next eight points, all in a row.
As they came to a headway, the younger player seemed to be more at ease than his rival and was leading, with three set-points to his advantage.
He lost the set and went on to lose the match.
If you know anything about tennis, then you’ll know that coming back from three set-points down is extremely difficult. But in this case, the older, more experienced former number one had something that the younger player didn’t – The right kind of self-talk.
Did the weather conditions change? No. Did the balls or courts change? No. His racquets’, clothes, water…? No.
Now here’s the thing, I’m only assuming from watching that this is the way it went down; but as the younger player held the opportunity to take the set with just one more strike he seemed to ‘freeze up’. In sport, that’s a term for the tightening up of the muscles. From one moment to the next he was loose, flowing and relaxed to not being able to hit a ball in the right direction.
16 ISSUE 73
What went wrong?
Only his mindset. But he’s not the only one who does this. In the sporting world it’s not uncommon to see someone in match-winning form one moment turn to not being able to do a single thing right in just a few moments. It begins when they hit a wall, then, after their first failure to climb that wall, they start to doubt themselves. After a few more failed attempts, all their training seems to count for nought – as everything falls apart. In business, we do it too.
And that’s when you begin to ‘freeze up’. Be it in sport or in business, no one can operate at a highly effective level if they’re feeling negative towards the task at hand. It’s physically and mentally impossible.
Have you ever failed at something you’ve been trying to do? Have you ever seen someone else spring off from the starting blocks to achieve incredible success while you are left at the starting line wondering why your product launch went nowhere?
In sport we’ve known this for years, the most effective sports person is the one who is relaxed in their mind and focused on the positive outcome. In business it’s the same.
I have. In fact it happens more often then you’d imagine. And without doubt, each time it happens I find myself struggling wondering, ‘What the hell am I doing wrong?’
The more times you think about (focus on, question, wonder about) the negative, the less relaxed, focused and productive you become. It’s a proven psychological fact. Negative thoughts affect more than just the outcome of the thing at hand; they affect your concentration levels, your emotions, your relationships, your clarity… your everything.
The thing is, it may not be that I’ve done something ‘wrong’, it may just be that it didn’t work that time. Sometimes that happens. My mindset determines what happens next. I’ve asked this question before, ‘How is it that two different people can do the same training program, do the same ‘things’, but get two completely different results from the same actions?’
So next time you hit that ‘wall’ and meet your old nemesis ‘failure’ (the word we use when something didn’t work out the way we want it to), receive it as just ‘something that happened’. Accept that it in itself is neither good nor bad; it’s just a thing that happened.
Simple answer – different people were used to measure the results. Those different people are the customer on the other end. The point is though; what happens next is determined by your mindset.
If action needs to be taken to improve upon it, do so. If you’re feeling anxious and perhaps somewhat frustrated because you didn’t receive your desired outcome in what you were trying to do, no problem, set aside your ‘evaluation’ of the event for 24 hours – go do something else and come back tomorrow with a clear mind.
I believe that long term success in business can only begin after your first failure. I believe that long term success in business can only begin after your second failure… and your third, and your fourth and your fifth, and so on. I believe that long term success (lifelong success) goes hand-in-hand with long term failure. I don’t believe that you can have one without the other. They complement each other; they work together in a careful balance that makes the whole experience. They are, simply put, part of life.
Remember… you cannot operate at capacity if you are feeling negative (I’ve failed, it failed, why doesn’t won’t it work etc). These types of thoughts can (and will) destroy your business if you let them in.
When it comes down to it, what you might call success or what you might call failure is really nothing more than the label you put on whatever has happened. If you put negative things (negative self talk) on whatever it is that has happened (or not happened) then you will think negative things about it.
Just as they could make you lose the match, even though nothing has changed. This article is also available as a short video. Listen and be inspired here: https://goo.gl/TB2B1p. f

Challenges of running your business! On my recent push bike ride across America, I managed to take in a lot of the countryside, despite my aching bones and weary eyes. However, what was interesting was that the start and finish points were both coastal towns that were only about an hour’s drive from a major city. The two were vastly different in terms of economic activity. One was a sleepy town with beautiful beaches and a large pier and was ostensibly a holiday destination. Development was almost non-existent and the economy was visibly struggling with “vacant” signs littered across many of the commercial properties. By contrast the other was vibrant and bustling and there appeared to be no vacant shops. The people I talked to had a clear and positive vision about what the future held for their region. It occurred to me that the second town had a vibe that seemed to resonate from their small bars, café and standalone food courts. The people I spoke to either lived in this town or were visiting someone that did. A lot of the town’s residents were well educated and drove to work in the larger,
neighbouring city where they were well paid. They simply preferred to live on the coast for the lifestyle. The other thing I noticed was the amount of commentary in the business media about “talent attraction”. It appears to be the new buzz word and this is where, if you put the two together, you have the foundations to start building a vibrant economy. As a business you are going to be competing against other business, potentially from all around the world. To be successful today you are going to need world class staff and to attract those people you will need to entice them with more than money. It is time for the Sunshine Coast to really start to be actively focussing on the social aspects of the talent required for a vibrant world class region. To do this we must embrace all forms of hospitality, business and cultural events because this, along with our natural advantages, puts us right at the top of everyone’s list of places to live if they are able to make a living at the same time.

Safe is Risky Business Business is about timing, being in the right place and doing something about it. Business is about leadership of the team not just being leader. Business is about finding courage to pursue your vision and creative instincts. Business is attitude to execute the vision, plans and strategies of a goal. Happiness and success are achieved more easily when you are invested in activities and pursuits that challenge, inspire and reward. Hence the ‘follow your passion’ mindset; create meaning and purpose in business and life. First we think, then plan, take actions, get a result to measure, review the outcome, refine and go again. Business Mindset The major factor in shaping outcomes and creating success is attitude and mindset. The power of the mind to achieve or believe is ‘mind over matter’. Remember as a child being encouraged by the phrase – if you put your mind to it you can achieve it. And the plea to a Nation - Yes we can. The belief and attitude for a desire to achieve, is a powerful energy force. Success in the face of adversity and winning against all odds is pure mindset. Mindsets can fall into two basic categories. People with fixed mindset and attitudes believe you are only as smart as your inherent or developed talent and skills and you live with what you’ve got. For this mindset, failure is a big issue where any slight setback sabotages tasks easily achieved and where issues fall apart quickly and are slow in recovery. In business, this could be losing sales to competitors, customer rejection or general fear of failure in changed markets and economic conditions. Whereas a growth mindset does not harbour a fear of failure and is not limited by qualification or given skill set. This group have an attitude of persistence and ability to overcome obstacles and setbacks, more interested to discover why they had failed rather than failure itself. Failure or poor outcomes are errors of insufficient effort so let’s try again. Goals Mindset When I relocated to Queensland from Gippsland’s winter chills and purchased a sailboat to live aboard, I had no knowledge of marine matters or sailing. Family and friends thought the idea was folly and a bad business move to establish a marine engineering business. Winning Brisbane, Gladstone and Hamilton Island Race Week three years later and achieving Queensland Government Ship Builders Accreditation were success of sorts. Failure and feeling limited by competitor’s reputations and histories never constrained a vision and goal to win. Mistakes were plenty with rudder designs that broke, mishandled sails destroyed and early racing moments of sailing in the wrong direction. When you believe you won’t achieve, you will be right. A growth mindset with vision and goals works best for success. Rod has 27 years’ experience as a company owner, director and entrepreneur, and 10 years as a Business Mentor and educator. He is a founding Director of the Business Enterprise Centre Sunshine Coast and Queensland Director of BEC Australia (non-profit Network). ca 1300 133 058 // www.businessenterprisecentresunshinecoast.org.au

HOW TO HAVE THE RIGHT MINDSET
TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS
By Chris Childs
Mindset is a choice. You can be as happy or depressed, or as excited as you decide to be. It helps if you decide to have a happy, positive and motivational attitude. In business, a positive attitude will benefit at least three major areas; you, your staff and your customers. You spend most of your life (or so it seems) working in your business. If you are motivated and positive, you’ll always find ways to enjoy it each day. You’ll approach everything with an ‘opportunity’ mindset and not a ‘missing out’ mindset. I guarantee you will make better decisions. Be assured; good decisions will never come from a bad mindset. The right mindset will also ensure you attract and retain the best staff. Your staff will also be more inclined to bring mistakes and issues to you if you have a positive can-do/ can-fix attitude. So you’ll find out problems faster and be in a better position to make better decisions. You’ll attract the right customers. You know the difference between good and bad customers, so I don’t need to explain that. With the right mindset, you will most certainly attract the customers you want. Elevate your business and bring a level of service that enables you to have exceptionally happy clients. Happy clients lead to more referrals and positive feedback into the community, and in turn generates more business and attracts more of the ‘perfect’ client.
The following list can help you to develop (and keep) the right mindset. 1. GET THE BEST INFORMATION ONLY Find the very best information in your field. Then focus on learning this information. One of the most critical personal skills today is not to find information, but to select the best information, avoiding the rest. 2. ROLE MODEL THE BEST PEOPLE Look for the best people in your field and try to model what they did right. Adopt their kind of thinking and mindset. 3. EXAMINE YOUR CURRENT BELIEFS Examine your current belief system. Are these beliefs supporting you? Or are they self-limiting? You have to identify those possible blocks and turn them around. Because whether you know about limiting beliefs or not, they are working in your subconscious mind. 4. SHAPE YOUR MINDSET WITH VISION AND GOALS A proactive approach to building your mindset is to see where you want to go. Seeing a vision, images describing your result clearly in your mind’s eye, will create a strong pull towards this result. Then go on and shape your vision into goals. It will shape your mindset to conform to your vision. 5. PROTECT YOUR MINDSET One thing you have to do is to protect your mindset against the naysayers and people who want to drag you down. Keeping your confidence is a big thing. Stay on the right path, look to improve yourself and help others along the way. Anything is possible with the right mindset. www.chrischilds.com.au 0419 744 193

Website Matters
SHOULD YOUR WEBSITE BE MOBILE FRIENDLY? Based on our statistics of Australian websites usage, 50 per cent of visitors are on a mobile phone, 15 to 20 per cent use tablets, and 30 per cent use desktop or laptop computers. Broadly speaking, websites handle these device types in three different ways:
MEL MYERS Jetpack Web Design
on the type of device. Great examples are bank websites where the mobile experience is more lightweight and streamlined compared to the desktop counterpart.
1. The website is displayed the same no matter what device. This represents the majority of websites, and almost all older websites fall into this category. The same website is loaded in all scenarios and it is up to the device to resize or display it. Desktops and tablets usually display these sites as intended but they are often small or hard to read on mobile devices.
3. Responsive websites adapt based on the device. Websites can be browsed on all devices and take advantage of the screen size available. For example, an online shop might show two to three products abreast on a mobile, four to five on a tablet, and six to 12 on a desktop computer. In fully responsive websites, large desktop screens can look completely different to a smaller screen.
2. Desktops and tablets display the main version of the website, and mobiles are served a special ‘mobile only’ version. This style of website allows completely different presentation and/or content depending
For new websites the latter two options are preferred. Existing websites can either be replaced or upgraded to be mobile friendly. The right answer depends on the business and what is commercially realistic.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mel has been running successful online businesses for 18 years and has written numerous websites and online applications including manufacturing facilities, accounting systems, shopping carts, and even a search engine. Legal Matters
WHAT YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR IN YOUR LAWYER Obviously everyone’s first thought is someone who is going to be able to ‘win’ for you. This is certainly a very good attribute for your lawyer to have although there is much more you should also look for in your lawyer. Perhaps the most important thing you should look for is someone who makes you feel comfortable. As a client you have to disclose a lot of information to your lawyer and this can be quite upsetting and distressing for some clients. You as the client should feel you can honestly and openly tell your lawyer about your issues.
Look for a lawyer who understands and acknowledges what you as the client wants. This is so important because your lawyer needs to have an accurate understanding of your issue to be able to accurately advise and act on your behalf. Your lawyer cannot represent you well if they’re not aware of all the facts pertaining to the issue. Not having all of the relevant information could lead to a lot of extra time being spent on the case, which means more costs for you or even the loss of the case. This idea of comfortableness links into having compatible personalities - it won’t be healthy for you and your lawyer to constantly not see eye-to-eye.
TARYN EASTWELL
Your lawyer should be good at communicating. This means they regularly contact you with details about the progress of your issue or simply they are able to articulate clearly and simply their advice. You do not want to be walking out of their office uncertain of exactly what advice they have given. It is also important for you as the client to tell your lawyer you do not understand what they are saying and hopefully they will explain it again with less legal jargon. You should look for a lawyer who is available. This relates back to the idea of communication and even comfort. You want someone who can return your phone calls and is available for meetings. This is important as often you will need to contact your lawyer frequently about further incidents or new facts pertaining to the case. Yes, your lawyer might have 10 other really important cases going on but if they do not have time for your case, is that really who you want representing you? Look for a lawyer who understands and acknowledges what you as the client wants. This is particularly important for people establishing businesses, as you want your lawyer to understand what your goals are and where you want your business to go. Lastly, your lawyer should be reasonably priced. You don’t want to end up paying an exorbitant fee for something another firm could have done for a lot less.

Brokerage Matters
WHAT IS MY BUSINESS WORTH? Over the years, many business owners have suggested they know exactly how to value their business. Generally, they’ve been misled on an assumption that, there is a simple calculation for their industry to arrive at the figure a buyer will agree to pay. If only it was that easy! You could have two identical businesses in the same town with the same profitability, similar product lines, stock holding and clientele yet one may achieve double the price of the other. A common myth is, a business is worth its annual turnover or, a multiple of three to four times its net profit. Whilst there are select industries that work to formulas (such as Childcare or management rights), most businesses have to be valued on their own merit. When appraising a business, we assess to a myriad of variables that may affect the value
Whilst some sellers are disappointed to learn they may not achieve their dream price, we often exceed business owner’s expectations. This is common for medium to large sales, where well established businesses with solid profit and management structures are offered. Wealthy buyers have a strong appetite for these and are aware they will have to pay a premium to secure them. One thing for sure is, there is an enormous amount of buyer activity at the moment. If you really want to know what your business is worth, now may be the best time to find out!

Building Matters
VISION IS THE KEY TO BUILDING YOUR DREAM HOME Your home is very personal to you and so is the architectural design and building process. With that in mind, here are a few guidelines for helping you select your land and building requirements. Firstly, get inspired, starting with a vision of what you wish to achieve. Look closely at your building site. Every block tells a story so ensure you view the site objectively prior to purchasing. Question and ask yourself does the block suit our requirements, will this suit my family lifestyle by going two storey, single storey or is this site too narrow? Look at your surroundings and observe privacy from neighbours, cross ventilation, sun orientation, road noise, and don’t forget to ask about flood levels, storm and sewer locations, building covenants and setbacks.
PAT & PETRINA RYAN Ryan Designer Homes
Define your ‘wish list’ for zoning rooms to suit your family lifestyle. Your builder can assist with fine tuning your wish list, giving invaluable feedback. Determine the number of bedrooms, living spaces, bathrooms and group them to ensure the home reflects how your family wish to congregate. For example, if you have children perhaps have a family room, bedrooms and bathroom are all in one zone. Decide on the theme or styling for your home, like modern or resort and define clearly what fit-out the builder is offering for the budget perimeters you have set. Spend time going over this detail. Once you have decided on your ‘wish list’, your builder can start creating your vision.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Husband and wife team, Pat and Petrina Ryan have over 30 years in the building industry. Pat currently presides as Chairperson of H.I.A Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay region and sits on the Queensland executive committee. Petrina won the 2012 Master Builders Sunshine Coast Woman in Building award and currently serves on the QMBA committee on the Sunshine Coast.
Individuality and Flair It takes six steps to achieving a home that reflects your personality and styling. Ryan Designer Homes team are here to listen, understand and plan for the success of designing and building your home. ‘Living Design’ is our philosophy! Laurie and Tricia Wilson had this to say, “Go through the process with a quality builder (you may be surprised at how affordable it really is) and get what you want. We love our home – thanks Pat, Petrina, and the team at Ryans”. Expect the unexpected when you sit down to discuss the latest developments in homebuilding with the RDH team.

Property Development Matters
PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT – WHERE DO YOU START? Firstly we need to remember that nothing is achieved without effort and sacrifice. You must have belief, persistence, perseverance and you need to take a long term view. Property development is one of the most rewarding things to do in real estate investing.
• Are great with coordination and organisation – property development is all about managing people and processes. Having good project management skills will definitely be one of your biggest assets.
Interest rates are down. Optimism is up. People are considering capitalising on market conditions and either developing, or investing in the property market. Development is a long term strategy, even though we live in a world of instant gratification with quick fix and get rich quick schemes, with property development slow and steady is the key.
• Have great time management – time management is crucial for every project, we all know that time is money. You must be organised, proactive and on top of what is happening at all times.
Whether you are considering taking on a complex renovation, a splitter, a subdivision or developing master communities. Developers are the coordinators of these activities and really orchestrate the process from the inception to the end. Successful Developers: • Are great negotiators – have good listening skills, communication skills, and above all are good negotiators helping you to reach the best price and terms for the purchase of the land or property. Your profit depends on how much you purchase it for. • Are team players – leading the team with understanding and communication, getting the best results from the team.
SUSAN LINDEQUE Linzen Group
• Are problem solvers – life doesn’t always go perfectly to plan and property development is no exception. Solving problems will rely knowledge and experience. Sometimes you won’t have the answer so you need to build a strong team around you. • Have the financial skills needed to create the detailed financial model necessary for development, ensuring you make a profit. Most developments encounter unforeseen problems which cost money, so you have to ensure from the start that there is enough profit in the deal. Development can be perceived as high risk activity however financial institutions today have stringent financial models to ensure that help to minimise their risk. It is vital that you develop the skills need, but even more important that you perform stringent due diligence processes and negotiate good terms and conditions when you acquire any property or land for development.

Office 365 Matters
OFFICE 365: WHY ALL THE FUSS! Office 365 is not a product, it is a bundled set of business productivity tools that we use in our businesses every day. By using Office 365 we can increase our investment in information technology while reducing our costs in doing business. Office 365 improves our bottom line profits! So what do we get when we decide to join the ‘cloud computing tsunami’ that is not only hitting the Coast but globally? This month we will focus on the tools we use every day – the Office suite and emails. Next month we will look at the Office 365 collaboration and data storage components with OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online and Instant Messaging using Skype for Business. Business Productivity Let’s start with what we all know and understand – Microsoft Office. Office 365 contains a bundle of Microsoft Office business productivity tools including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote, Access, Publisher, Outlook and Infopath. Office 365 also provides Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook as Web Applications meaning you can edit your documents on any device even at an internet café! Moving your business to Office 365 means that all staff are now operating on the same version of software that is updated automatically whenever any enhancements are released by Microsoft. Each user is able to load these applications on five separate devices.
TERRY O’BRIEN Netbase Solutions
Communication Tools Many businesses have a server to store their data and manage their emails using Microsoft Exchange. If you don’t have a server your emails are possibly managed through a hosting provider and use what is known as a POP or IMAP account. These accounts rely on you creating a backup of any emails once they are transferred to your computer. Office 365 includes Microsoft Exchange meaning that all staff have a business grade email system, are able to share calendars, book resources such as meeting rooms and access their email through any device or on any computer. Magic happens when you respond to an email on your mobile phone and when you return to your office you can see your sent email in the sent folder of your Outlook. Tips and Tricks If you need to create a survey, form, or questionnaire, Office 365 has you covered. You can use Excel Online to create a survey with a shareable link that saves responses in a back-end spreadsheet, allowing you to analyse your data however you wish. When reviewing a Word document you can add comments to advise the author of recommended changes. Comments have had a makeover with Word 2013 and now you can reply to comments and mark them complete, and the overall function has a much more streamlined visual look.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Terry O’Brien has been working with ITC and business application for the past 28 years. He now specialises in Office 365, particularly working with small to medium sized businesses. HR Matters
SMALL, CALM STEPS LEAD TO BIG, SCARY CHANGES Change is scary, yet change is the only constant in life, especially in business. Employees come and go, technology improves, services become obsolete then new opportunities arise. What really matters is how we deal with these changes. As a business owner, the way you handle change ultimately affects the evolution of your company. The concept of maintaining a sustainable business model is daunting. Just thinking about what is involved, short term versus long term goal setting – it’s exhausting! We are taught to think ahead, predict consequences. However, thinking about the future too much can cause anxiety and worry, daily. This can cause our freeze response, a primal instinct; the downfall of business ventures. Failing to evolve your service or product means eventually becoming irrelevant. So when thinking about the company future, ensure you don’t become consumed with fear of change. You can achieve this by implementing mindfulness techniques in the workplace. Mindfulness is not just a HR buzzword, or religious philosophy. Studies have found mindfulness actually enhances employee performance and wellbeing. Your plans probably for the new financial year might be small, like an updated payroll system, or large – like a rebrand. Instead of overwhelming staff with numerous ideas for the future, share mindfulness skills they can employ in the workplace, to minimize barriers.
KATHARINE BOGARD Workplace Central (formerly Haycroft Workplace Solutions)
30 ISSUE 73
Benefits of mindfulness in the workplace: • Staff are encouraged to engage in self-directed learning. • Improves health, wellbeing and safety of employees. • Improves performance, confidence and concentration. • Reduces frustration and increases multi-tasking capabilities. • Encourages positive leadership behaviours and teamwork. • Proactive approach to communication and problem solving. Practicing mindfulness doesn’t mean you have to conduct yoga classes in your boardroom. Simply practice adjusting your mindset, to embrace mind over matter. Achieve mindfulness in the workplace: • Visualise your end product/achievement. • Say yes, instead of focusing on obstacles. • Break your big plans down into small actions you can accomplish each day. • Monitor and celebrate small milestones as you approach goals. • Keep an open mind and accept that timeframes and plans may also change. • Limit distractions and outsource where possible, so you don’t sweat the small stuff. Change is scary but fear can prevent you from achieving your dreams. Don’t risk falling behind your competitors who adapt to change by becoming stagnate. Consider it a case of mind over matter; put your mind to business and make change happen!

Advertising Matters
A LITTLE CAN GO A LONG WAY One problem that commonly occurs in the advertising world with new clients is getting them to tell their advertising agency their budget. A new client approaches an agency to promote their business and asks “How much?” The agency’s first question is “What is your budget?”. At this point clients often start avoiding the question or making statements like “You give me suggestions”. There are two main reasons for this: First there is the group that have no idea how to work out a marketing budget and is looking for guidance. The second, and more prevalent group, doesn’t want to say what their budget is because they fear the agency will spend it all. Yes you read that right, they don’t want to reveal their budget for fear the agency will perhaps make up stuff to spend their money. Any good advertising agency can create an effective campaign for your actual budget, and

So don’t be afraid to share your budget with agencies giving you a marketing proposal. they will make sure you are getting ‘bang for your buck’ because if they don’t, you won’t come back. There have been instances where agencies lose work based on Agency A’s proposed spend being more than Agency B; the potential client not realising that the suggestions are not at all equal. The more you spend the greater the reach but if you have a limited budget there are still effective ways to advertise. So don’t be afraid to share your budget with agencies giving you a marketing proposal. At least that way if you are getting multiple proposals you can compare apples with apples. And in the end you are only hurting yourself if you don’t.

Commercial Real Estate Matters
INSIGHT INTO INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES Affordability, thanks to the Reserve Bank Australia’s low interest rates, is fostering the best-selling market since the pre-GFC environment of 2007 and this is being reflected in the increase in the level of enquiries on commercial properties across the region. Government agencies employment contracts have stimulated the commercial office sector and an increase in funding and governmental department staff has consequently increased the demand for larger premises. There are investment opportunities, in both office and retail, in the medical and research hub of Kawana located in close proximity to the Hospital. There has been no further marked difference in availability across the Maroochydore CBD area, with much of the A Grade space available already leased by the food and beverage industry. The River Markets Shopping Centre is fully leased and trading well above expectations and Bli Bli Village Centre, a three-staged, multi-level commercial precinct mix of retail, food and beverage, and professional services is well-positioned to

align with its success and has already attracted significant interest from prospective tenants. Industrial stock is tightening in the Kawana district with the market driving demand due to its proximity to the Hospital, and medical and research precinct. Overall, the current climate is encouraging a buying mentality and funding options have improved, although 100 per cent loan approvals have stagnated across lending institutions. The largest major industrial land release in Brisbane’s northern growth corridor, North East Business Park (NEBP) in Morayfield, is currently on the market. Zoned industry it is ideally positioned adjacent to the M1 which carries over 78,000 vehicles per day. Sunshine Coast Council’s focused drive on attracting overseas investors to the Sunshine Coast region forms part of its Regional Economic Development Strategy deployment and, over time, demand for commercial real estate will naturally surge and the region will reap the rewards as international businesses recognise the value in investing in the area.

Training Matters
WHAT IS RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING? I can RPL that qualification… I’ve been doing the job for years!! RPL stands for Recognition of Prior Learning and it is an assessment-only pathway to a nationally recognised qualification. There are two main pathways that you can take towards gaining your qualification. 1. Training and Assessment Pathway • Gain new knowledge, or build on your existing knowledge by participating in both the learning, and the assessment phase of the training process OR • Attend classes, and complete assessment tasks set by your trainer OR • Work at your own pace, by studying online, and completing set assessment tasks OR • Work individually as a trainee or apprentice, learning on the job and in set classes, and completing assessments both at work and at college.
RPL is an option definitely worth looking into.
TERRI CARR Ballinger Training & Consultancy
34 ISSUE 73
2. RPL Pathway • Candidates already possess the skills and knowledge required by the unit or qualification, and want these to be formally recognised. • The learning part of the training has already occurred over time, the assessment part involves collecting evidence to prove this. • Each piece of evidence needs to be assessed by a qualified trainer and assessor as being valid, current, sufficient and authentic. • RPL is not a practical pathway for everyone as it requires that you can produce the evidence that specifically matches the units of competency you choose. You may not be able to RPL an entire qualification. However, you may be able to provide evidence for five units out of nine, for example. The remaining units could be achieved via the Training and Assessment pathway. Vocational Training is definitely not a ‘one size fits all’ process. It is in your best interest to understand the many options available to you and your staff... so that you can find the best fit for you! RPL is an option definitely worth looking into.

Professional Management Matters
MANAGING YOUR BUSINESS RISK – ARE YOU SWIMMING NAKED? ‘You only find out who is swimming naked when the tide goes out.’ Warren Buffet was referring to risk management in the stock market when he made this quote, but it applies equally to small business. Risk management isn’t just something for big business to consider and if you don’t consider your business risk than you may be left exposed. Put a risk management framework and strategy in place for this new financial year, allowing you and your stakeholders to better manage your business.
What would you do if your largest customer left or became insolvent? Can you access critical IT infrastructure in case of hardware or internet failure? Do you have a business continuity plan in case of inability to access your business premises due to natural disaster? Is your business model reliant on government policy that is subject to change?
Here’s some hints to help get started with your risk assessment.
What would be the impact on your business of a rapid appreciation or depreciation in the value of the Australian dollar?
Step 1 – Start with five categories to set your risk framework: Strategic Risk – your business strategy becomes less effective i.e technological changes, new competitors
Key Person risk – what would happen if you or a key staff member was unable to work for extended periods of time
Compliance Risk – failing to comply with all laws and regulations applying to your business Operational Risk – an unexpected failure in your company’s day to day systems, operations or processes
Financial Risk – the risk of a sudden financial loss
Reputational Risk – damage to the business’s reputation due to lawsuits, product recalls, poor customer reviews or negative publicity.
Step 2 – List all the risks you can think of for each of the categories listed above. Here are some examples.
MICHAEL McMANUS CFO Outsource
RISK ASSESSMENT QUESTIONAIRE
Do you have internal controls in place to prevent employee fraud and theft? Are you competing against large, well capitalized competitors? If so, what are their plans with relation to your location? Do have processes in place to control the key processes within your business? What would happen if one of these failed?
Step 3 – Rate the likelihood (almost certain, likely, possible, unlikely or rare) and consequence (catastrophic, major, moderate, minor, insignificant) of each risk occurring. For example if your largest customer left, probably unlikely, but the consequence is catastrophic. This would flag this scenario as high-risk and you should put some attention into your business strategy to mitigate this risk. Step 4 – An assessment of your current business risks will highlight your appetite for risk going forward.

Lending Matters
WHAT DO MORTGAGE BROKERS DO? Research shows that home loans sourced through mortgage brokers are now greater than 50 per cent. As the market becomes increasingly complex, one in two consumers now use mortgage brokers. And this number is increasing but many consumers do not fully understand the services a mortgage broker provides. Here’s what they do: Consumers that want home loans mostly choose between a broker or their bank. Brokers offer choices across a large range of lenders, often from a panel in excess 35 bank and non-bank lenders. Brokers work with their clients to assess borrowing needs and capacity, selecting a loan through the use of sophisticated software that suits the borrower’s aims and objectives and manage the process through to settlement. Brokers work for their client, NOT the bank, and enable consumers to consider a far broader range of options and choices. Brokers normally meet customers face-to-face to discuss and understand a client’s requirements and explain options and choices. Most brokers are mobile and will meet at a time and place convenient for the customer. This is often a client’s home. Weekends and evenings included. Brokers speak in plain language, explain the process and help clients compare apples with apples. • • • • • •
RICHARD WEST Top Ten Home Loans
Understand options and choices Use information to act now or plan for the future Save time Save money Free service Peace of Mind
Brokers act as a personal adviser, intermediary, counselor and coach throughout the loan application process. They will act as project manager until settlement. After settlement the broker continues supporting their client’s needs, assisting whenever they want to make loan amendments, switch products or purchase another property. Most finance brokers don’t charge a fee for their service since lenders pay them commissions for the loans successfully completed. Brokers use software that must be continually updated with changes to lender products, conditions, rates, fees and special offers etc. Some products seem to offer a great deal but they could have penalties, fees and charges not obviously apparent. Or, they may not have the flexibility required in the future. A mortgage broker helps customers choose the right loan and avoid taking a product that they might regret later. Market information, choices and options can offer peace of mind. Often busy work and family schedules don’t allow consumers the time for complex research or lengthy trips to bank offices. A broker saves customers time, money, legwork and stress. Industry oversight organisations such as the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) require that brokers holding MFAA membership adhere to a code of conduct and receive mandatory ongoing annual training to stay updated with industry developments. This particular organisation also requires that the finance broker be diploma qualified as a credit adviser. Sleep well.

powering business potential with Kimberley Lynch, CCIQ
When Queensland small businesses can think big The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) described the 2015 Federal Budget as the most small business friendly budget in more than two decades.
The one measure that stood out above all others, designed by Treasurer Joe Hockey to give small to medium sized businesses an immediate lift, was the writeoff mechanism for all assets up to $20,000. This has enabled small businesses to buy that much-needed work vehicle, computer, tools and other equipment. And the bonus was that it didn’t have to be done before the end of this financial year, with the government running it through until June 30, 2017. CCIQ partners, accountancy network BDO Sunshine Coast said it represented a significant increase from the previous write-off threshold of $1000. Hundreds of businesses on the coast will qualify. BDO advises that if a small business entity is registered for GST, the GST exclusive amount is taken to be the cost of the asset for the purposes of the $20,000 threshold. Accelerated depreciation will apply to the majority of capital asset types including cars, machinery and equipment. Both new and second hand assets are eligible. A small number of assets will not be eligible for the immediate write off, including horticultural plants and capital works as these types of assets generally have their own specific depreciation rules. A small business, for the purpose of these measures, is an entity (sole trader, partnership, trust or company) operating a business with turnover less than $2million (when aggregated with turnover of associated entities). Assets costing $20,000 or more will not be immediately deductible. However they may be placed in the small business depreciation pool and depreciated at 15 per cent in the first year and 30 per cent in subsequent years. The balance of the pool can be immediately deducted if it falls below $20,000 over the period (including existing pools).
Kimberley Lynch is the Regional Manager for the Sunshine Coast & Wide Bay Area for CCIQ, the peak industry body for businesses in Queensland. Your own mind business Many people are unsure of what a psychologist actually does, how they differ from psychiatrists, and when it might be beneficial to consult one. Psychologists are trained in the science of human behaviour and must be registered by the Psychology Board of Australia. They occupy the professional space between psychiatrists, who possess medical qualifications and can prescribe medication, and counselors, whose training tends to be less scientifically grounded and are not governed by a regulatory board.
Alternatively, the desire to enjoy life more, break bad habits, improve the quality of relationships or to maximize professional performance are other reasons to consult a psychologist.
Individuals consult psychologists for many reasons; ongoing management of chronic mental health issues, managing short term difficulties, personal development and optimising life experience. If you have concerns about your thoughts, emotions or behaviour, or others have expressed concerns, it may be time to consult a psychologist.
Whether it’s overcoming difficult situations, or striving for improvement in thought, feeling, or enjoyment of life, a psychologist can assist by being a confidential and objective listener and offer practical and achievable solutions. A brief therapeutic intervention may be all it takes to provide clarity and to refocus life. ca
Many are unsure about what happens during a consultation. In essence, you and your psychologist explore the issues that are of concern to you, discuss the outcomes that you would like to achieve, and, most importantly, identify the personal attributes, social supports and other resources that are available to you to assist you to work towards those outcomes.

vehicle business with Ron Hill Auto
How’s your mindset when you car doesn’t GO? Whether your car has broken down or is at the workshop for servicing, it could be a hassle and a major inconvenience – if you let it! Please have patience with your mechanic as cars have become more complex these days requiring diagnostics and problem solving to fix. We are currently seeing new technologies that are becoming more common on vehicles, which help with vehicle safety, convenience and are of benefit to the environment. One of the latest technologies is regenerative braking... Regenerative braking is when kinetic energy is recovered during braking. Usually, braking results in heat which is wasted. Hybrid and electric vehicles, and vehicles that have a small battery for certain functions such as drive-
by-wire systems, can make use of captured energy from braking. A portion of the kinetic energy is captured by a generator then stored in a high-voltage battery. It helps preserve your brake linings because the generator gives you braking power without needing as much pressure on the brake pads, which means your brakes don’t wear out as quickly. Our aim at our workshop is to give clear communication, professional servicing and meet customer expectations, keeping up to date with new vehicle trends and technologies. If we can work together with our customers to reduce stress associated with the inconvenience of being without wheels then we have done our job well. From the workshop to the customer ... Attitude is everything! ca

COMMUNITY
Welcome to our community feature. We believe that here on the Sunshine Coast ‘community’ is a big part of who we are. This feature gives some of our local businesses an opportunity to give a shout out to some great businesses, charities and causes in our community and also an opportunity for them say thanks to their team and or clients. The feature gives you an insight into their philosophy on business, on mindset or on community. We are proud to be part of a community that really does look after each other, spending our dollars locally is an important part of that. Business Matters’ community philosophy is very much about encouraging you to understand that we truly believe that in both business and in life, ‘the more you give – the more you get’. We love helping local charities and causes and whilst we can’t help all of them all the time, we certainly pick some great ones to support each year. Our business philosophy is no doubt very obvious, we want to be the positive media, and it is intentional that you won’t read anything negative in the magazine, we want to inspire you by giving you motivation to take your business and life to the next level, and we believe that a big part of that is through connection. GIVE GIVE GIVE Connection with like-minded business AND YOU WILL professionals, connection with business GET GET GET owners through the pages of the magazine, but also connection with our community.
MINDSET PHILOSOPHY
One would think that after surfing for so many decades, I’d be able to balance on my surfboard without falling off. Unfortunately that isn’t the case. When the surf is large, the ability to cope with extended periods of being held under water is a fundamental survival skill. Fortunately, with the right training and some practice, ‘mind over matter‘ is of tremendous assistance in such circumstances. The ability to ‘relax’ under water while being tossed about like a rag doll and not to panic and needlessly expend valuable energy and air is truly a triumph of ‘mind over matter’.

COMMUNITY PHILOSOPHY
I am passionate about people - I don’t like them all, all of the time - but I love that we all think differently, even though most of us think we are right. And I know that most people care about others - I see acts of courage and humility every day. And that’s why I know that business is not about technology or manufacturing processes or selling a product or discovering the latest idea. It is about people, their needs, their abilities, and relationships. Without people every unit of currency in the world would be worthless. People are the ultimate consumers of every product and service, and at this point in time, still the creators of new technologies. Even in business-to-business sales, people make the decisions. So be with people who invigorate, motivate and challenge you.

BE THE CHANGE CONVERSATIONS with Lisa Wain
from Jerakala Beef MAKE IT HAPPEN! Business Matters and Life Matters caught up with Lisa Wain at the Big Top in Maroochydore, where she and husband Jasen recently opened their business, Jerakala Beef. We found Lisa and Jasen to be truly inspirational, as they are not only making things happen for themselves, but are also being the change within their industry.
Tell us about your journey so far?
I’ve certainly done my fair share of jobs over time, from admin work when I left school to cleaning houses when I had my babies. I’ve poured beers and managed pokie machines, and done accounting, small business consulting and economic development consulting. But I’ve also been involved in farming and butchery plus a fair bit of retail since the age of 15 when my mum bought a small corner store.
We hear there’s a big trip on the cards?
I’ve travelled a little bit for work and been to the Gulf fishing with the family a couple of times but I’ve never been out of Australia. But that’s about to change in December. India, here I come!
Tell us a little about Jasen?
Jasen is a fifth generation beef cattle farmer, born and bred in Queensland. He has always lived in Mundubbera. He has been involved with cattle farming his whole life and also spent 15 years developing The Golden Mile Orchards for Australian Food and Fibre, among many other things. Property development is his thing!
Tell us how Jerakala began?
We bought our first small cattle property of 250 acres in 1997 and that’s when we started the Jerakala Foundation. Jasen already had a lease on some state forest country where he ran a few breeders and we grew from there. We now have over 22,000 acres and run around 800 head of cattle.
What are you doing within your industry to BE THE CHANGE?
Understanding that traditional agriculture on a property of our size was simply not viable, we have significantly diversified and value-added to our enterprise over the past few years. Four years ago we moved a house onto one of our properties and spent a year renovating it into a gorgeous little bed and breakfast business. Then, two years ago, we purchased a small abattoir and butchery 40 kilometres up the road in Eidsvold to close the supply chain. We also have 2,000 olive trees of which we are currently harvesting olive leaf for powder and extract. 52 ISSUE 73
Wow, you’re working very hard! What is your goal?
Our goal is to grow the foundation so that it can sustain (and pay) us, as well as our three children. And now we have a grandchild, I guess we had better keep going so that we can sustain our grandchildren over the longer term, too! It’s about planning for the next 100 years, rather than just the next five.
Tell us a little about the Freshfood Markets and your shop in there?
One of our strategies for growing the meat retail side of the business was to sell through farmers’ markets. We tried for almost two years to get into an existing farmers’ market within 300 to 400 kilometres, without much luck. Shane Stanley’s Noosa Farmers’ Market was number one on my list and through my persistent following up, they offered us the opportunity to open a stall at the refurbished Big Top in Maroochydore.
And how is it all going?
We are in four different farmers’ markets and experiencing substantial growth because of this. It’s scary and exciting at the same time!
How important is it for our local economy for the community to support the markets?
The Shane Stanley Farmers’ Market at the Big Top is the first of its kind in Australia. Never before has a traditional farmers’ market been integrated with a modern retail environment, as it has at the Big Top. Farmers are basically selling produce direct from their farms outside the doors of Woolworths. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us farmers to get in front of people who may not normally shop at farmers’ markets and to become price-makers instead of pricetakers. This, in turn, is great for the local economy with stall holders employing people to help out on market day. The markets also provide another reason for visitors to spend some of their travel dollars locally.
What will community support achieve?
With support from the community the Big Top Farmers’ Markets will continue to grow and be something that other regions are jealous of.
What is your number one point of difference?
Family owned and operated, Jerakala Beef is one of only a few closed supply chains of its kind in Australia. We breed, grow, process, value-add, and retail our own beef. While we do employ a couple of locals, we have one of our own family members involved in every step of the process.
Why do people buy from you?
We are the real deal when we it comes to ‘paddock to plate’. We are the farmer and we are the people serving you at the farmers’ market. We can intimately answer your questions and we know exactly where the produce has come from, how it was raised and how it was processed.
What do you love about what you do?
I love that as a husband and wife team we have been able to couple my passion for small business and his passion for farming and property development to create a solid foundation for the future generation of our family. Jerakala is made up of two words - jera, being a viking symbol for ‘harvest’ and kala - being Celtic for ‘destiny’ so basically we are harvesting our destiny.
What are some of the challenges?
Well, other than droughts and floods I would say our biggest challenge is people and communication. We are nothing without the people around us working as a team toward a common goal. Employing people is one of the most challenging aspects of growing any business and it is even more complex when over half

of the team are family members. It is also one of the more rewarding aspects though. I am proud of the young adults my children have grown into and I look forward to working with them for the rest of my life - after all, they will be funding my retirement eventually!
What opportunities are ahead for you?
The beef industry is currently experiencing a massive upturn and record prices with a strong long term outlook. Fortunately we are in a great position to finally reap the rewards of our decades of hard work. Since opening our stall in the Big Top, we have been invited to take our produce to three other markets and we are now selling at Hervey Bay Pier UP Markets, North Lakes Markets and the first week in July will be a regular at the Noosa Farmers’ Markets. This is keeping us pretty busy at the moment. e JERAKALA FARM, 20024 Burnett Hwy, Mundubbera Phone (07) 4165 4909, www.jerakala.com.au

EYEBROW MATTERS
BY SARAH CHAPMAN, ALLURE MEDI SPA & BEAUTY LOUNGE
Raising eyebrows with the latest colour trends With the eyebrow trend snowballing in recent years it is quite obvious that colouring methods follow suit. But what makes a great brow or lash tint and how can this be the perfect ‘finishing touch’ for your professional brow design? And with so many colouring methods available, which is best for YOU? Most eyebrow specialists will recommend a colour best suited to your skin tones and hair type. Too much colour or product will result in scary Groucho look, while too little will cause a washed out, tired look. Whether the texture of your hair is thick or thin, you may struggle with ‘sparse’ hair. For this brow type it is best to avoid darker tints or concentrates. A lighter undertone that can be left on longer during developing time will give depth and fullness to the hair without showing the imperfections. On wiry hair with grey or white hairs, a lighter tone will give the white hair time to develop without overdoing the finer hairs preventing a potential ‘salt and pepper’ look from using a darker undertone! Thick brows are much easier to determine and can be created using a variety of colours. Have fun with your colour choice! Bring out your best features by using the likes of concentrate colours such as índigo black, midnight sky, henna chestnut and pearl granite - make your features pop! Redheads suit earthy mocha brown or henna chestnut, while Nordic blondes should opt for something like a chocolate cocoa lash tint and pearl granite brows.

does your child love learning? So do we.
Ready for ? We are in an era of considerable social change and as a result, the work related skills that people will need in the future are evolving. The Institute For The Future (2011) identified six drivers that they predicted would change the nature of skills required by work forces by 2020. They argued that people living longer, sophisticated workplace automation (removing repetitive jobs), the capacity for larger-scale data usage, the rise of visual media, super structured organisations that use social media to work at extreme scales and a globally connected world where power has become more widely spread would drive significant change in the work place. We are almost half way through this period and it is useful to reflect on how important their ten nominated skills have become.
Sense Making: Ability to determine the deeper meaning or significance of what is being expressed.
Social Intelligence: Ability to connect to others in a deep and direct way, to sense and stimulate reactions and desired interactions.
Novel and Adaptive Thinking: Proficiency at thinking and developing solutions and responses beyond those that are rote or rule based.
Cross Cultural Competency: Ability to operate in different cultural settings.
Computational Thinking: Ability to translate vast amounts of data into abstract concepts and to understand data based reasoning.
New Media Literacy: Ability to critically assess and develop content that uses new media forms and to leverage these media for persuasive communication.
Transdisciplinary: Literacy and ability to understand concepts across multiple disciplines.
Design Mindset: Ability to represent and develop tasks and work processes for desired outcomes.
Cognitive Load Management: Ability to discriminate and filter information for importance and to understand how to maximise cognitive functions.

(IFTF, 2011, Future Work Skills 2020, viewed 30th June 2015, www.iftf.org/uploads/media/SR-1382A_UPRI_future_work_skills_sm.pdf) As I reflect on this list as an educator, they are all proficiencies required for an effective teacher in 2015. I would suspect for many occupations the response would be the same. Businesses too require these capacities in a changing marketplace where global factors impact on local decisions. Schools need to immerse young people in a culture of thinking that grows these capacities and simultaneously draws on the wisdom of the millennia in enhancing well-being. Staff and students need to have the capacity to reflect wisely, discern possible ways forward and then have the character to act towards better outcomes even when first efforts result in failure. There is a requirement for creativity, flexibility, discernment and persistence. We are in a constant cycle of reflection and action as we create new ways of being.

YOUR BODY MATTERS
BY DEBBIE CHAPPELL, REVIVAL CLINIC
Ageing is NOT like the weather! We CAN do something about it. Pull up a pinch of skin on the back of your hand and hold it there for a few seconds. If it springs right back you’re probably younger than thirty. The older we get, the longer it takes to spring back into position. This is because of the loss of ELASTIN in our skin. It’s one of the main reasons for sagging skin, lines and wrinkles. Every cell in our body has our genetic instruction manual, detailed in our 20 to 25 thousand genes. Epigenetics [the study of gene expression] shows that genes do not just sit idly by and do nothing. If you think of genes as the musical notes of an opera you will get the idea. The music on paper is the same but different musicians play the music very differently. Some notes will be played louder or longer than another orchestra playing the same music.
The good news is, science has come up with ways to improve gene expression through specific botanical interventions that reset the profile to that of a much younger person. It’s the same with our genetics. Some genes will be loudly expressing and some softly. The genes don’t change but their degree of activity does.

This gets us back to elastin. When we’re young the genes controlling elastin production are operating a quite a high level. As we age, genes ‘downregulate’. This lowers elastin production and our skin loses its spring. Bummer! Genes that produce melanin upregulate with age, hence age spots. The good news is, science has come up with ways to improve gene expression through specific botanical interventions that reset the profile to that of a much younger person. There are products now available that are proven to do this. Whether it is elastin in your skin, your energy levels, general ageing or age related fat accumulation, these issues can all now be positively impacted by Epigenetics, the science of the 21st century.

FAMILY MATTERS
BY JOANNE BOUGHTON, BOUGHTON LEGAL
Family Law:
Determining the fact from fiction
YOUR FAMILY
matters!
There is a common misconception that parents have a right to spend equal time with their children after separation; in fact it is children that have the right to know and be cared for by each of their parents and the right to spend time and communicate with their parents including having the benefit of both parents being involved in their lives, to the maximum extent that is consistent with the child’s best interests (Section 60B of the Family Law Act).
The court is concerned mainly with the best interests of the children and the interests of the parents must take a lower priority if those interests compete with those of the child. The Family Law Act states that there is a presumption that parents have equal shared parental responsibility for making decisions about long term major issues regarding children. The presumption does not apply where a parent has engaged in family violence or abuse of a child or where it would not be in the best interests of the child. Inability of parents to communicate well or other circumstances may cause parents to be in a position where they are not able to equally participate in making decisions for the long term welfare of their children. When the courts are called upon to determine parenting issues the court is concerned mainly with the best interests of the children and the interests of the parents must take a lower priority if those interests compete with those of the child. Seeking advice from an experienced lawyer will help you determine Family Law fact from fiction.

YOUR CAT MATTERS
BY TANIA BARTON, HOBBITS KNOB CAT RETREAT
Choosing the best nutrition for your cat Your cat’s nutrition is the foundation to optimal health and wellbeing providing a complex balance of energy, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fibre and proteins to promote good health and vitality inside and out. How do I choose what is best for my cat? Here are five simple guidelines: 1. Age: Cats of varying ages have very different nutritional and health requirements from promoting healthy development for kittens to support with medical issues as they age. 2. Overall health: From diseases to skin disorders and weight loss, general health concerns can be overcome or maintained completely through certain dietary requirements and restrictions. 3. Lifestyle: Nutrition selection through the appropriate diet, according to your cat’s activity levels, will be the difference in developing preventable diseases or remaining in good health. 4. Palate: Providing a food that tempts and excites your cat’s taste buds, can be challenging. Some cats need the right aroma, the right texture and the right size. This may just be a matter of trial and error but don’t give in to your cat too easily, otherwise you can make them fussy. 5. Treats: Using raw meats as treats is preferable as it promotes their natural instincts, digestion and healthy teeth and gums. Steer clear of commercially packaged treats.
Work closely with your veterinarian, be educated, and get in tune with your cat’s ‘normal’ to assess your cat’s nutritional health from a complete perspective to ensure a long, happy, healthy lifestyle.

JEWELLERY MATTERS
BY ADRIAN SCHULZ, DIAMONDS OF DISTINCTION
How is your jewellery really made? In this day and age, customers are often concerned if their jewellery is made and manufactured in Australia rather than mass produced goods. Generally speaking, Australian precious jewellery is either individually handmade or it is mass produced on home soil. It is either forged directly from precious metals or cast. The benefits and suitability of each depend on the wearer. Handmade jewellery in this context suggests that an individual piece is designed and created exclusively, and is the only one of its kind in existence. Mass produced suggests a piece that is a copy of an original, molded for replication. This could be one of a limited number of units, or may be one of hundreds of thousands produced by a factory and shipped all over the globe. We’ve all heard the adage ‘back in the good old days when things were made to last’. Forging an object directly from metal is the only way to guarantee the integrity of the metal and strength of the item. Mass produced ‘cast’ parts cannot compete, due to the technique used. These castings often contain tiny air holes (porosity), an inherent side effect which can result in metal failure. Be sure to speak to your local Manufacturing Jeweller with any concerns or queries you may have.

Why adventure? Adventure is fun, adventure is free, and adventure is the Sunshine Coast’s biggest asset. ● Sunshine Coast - The Sunshine Coast is like a big playground; we have endless amounts of hiking tracks, mountains to climb, beaches to swim, passages and rivers to kayak, and many adventure businesses to enjoy. ● Nature - The great thing about adventure is that it gets you outdoors into nature. When you’re in nature you get to connect to Mother Earth, you get to connect to you - it is one of the biggest tools to creating contentment and balance within your life. Feel the sunshine on your face, breathe in the fresh air, and wake up every cell in your body. ● Comfort Zone - We all have one. Spice up your fitness training with adventure and it will allow you to get out of your comfort zone. This is where growth occurs, especially if you inject a little adventure up on a mountain ● Adventure - It’s fun! Wake up your inner child and be playful. It makes life way more awesome and it wakes up the creative, fearless and fun you that is just waiting inside to have permission to come out!
I challenge you to try it, watch your world change in a positive way, watch your life light up, watch the people around you want more of what you’re having, adventure is contagious; adventure is waiting for you.
Here are five adventures you could try this winter month: 1. Climb Mount Coolum 2. Hike Kondalilla Falls Circuit or challenge yourself to Baroon Pocket 3. Explore Noosa National Park 4. Kayak through Pumicestone Passage on a glassy winter’s day 5. Bike ride Caloundra foreshore
What I love most about adventure is that it allows you the opportunity to see and do awesome things all around the world. Instead of doing a bus trip, get your hiking pack and hike a country and see places on a level you never thought was possible and meet people that you would never meet on a bus.
We only have one life, so live it big and while you’re at it, do some star jumps because life is totally worth celebrating!

mindset for life
with Mandy Napier, Mindset for Success
Free your brain, energise yourself and boost productivity Why is it so many people are excellent at beating themselves up when they don’t get things done? Why do so many people set lofty goals, take quantum leaps and then stall? While there are many answers, a common reason is because most don’t know how to consistently harness the power of their brains so it can be freer to perform optimally. Here are a few tips to FREE your brain and boost your productivity. F - Formulate. Make a written list of all your uncompleted projects. Getting them out of your head and onto paper is the key. Notice how you instantly feel energised. R - Review each project diligently. If this was a ‘not to do’ list, what would you cross off? Review what’s left and select the most imperative project to tackle first. E - Evaluate the project and break it into small steps. Your brain is a focusing tool not a storage bucket. When you clearly see the way forward you will instantly feel more energised. E - Energise yourself into action! Schedule small tasks into your diary everyday and make them nonnegotiable. Every time you complete a task, tick it off and say ‘done.’ Your brain loves rewards. In return, it will release serotonin, which will help you feel more energised and motivated to do more. Momentum fuels momentum. You are optimising your brain for what it does best, focusing on things not about things. Try it out and watch yourself become an energised action taker. Let me know how you go!

Local knowledge
key to Latin America experience Travel surveys over the last few years have revealed an increasing demand for ‘authenticity’. Travellers don’t want to simply sit in hotels or visit standard attractions - they want to meet real locals and get a real feel for the country they are visiting.
“Latin America is a place full of hidden jewels and we love to make the people feel the places more than just visit them.”
As far as Horacio and Stella Passeggi are concerned, a holiday should be nothing less and they are experts in delivering exactly that through their business, Latin America.
“We have been going there since our honeymoon and it not only brings back good memories but also is a marvellous city with all the right ingredients - great food, weather, friendly locals, caipirinha (Brazilian traditional drink) and the best music!
Mind you, it does help when your heritage is South American! Horacio and Stella moved to Australia 18 years ago from Uruguay in South America. Horacio was the general manager of Nissan and Stella was involved in designing tours for employees, customers and dealers who wanted to visit the Nissan factories in Mexico, Spain and Japan.
When it comes to their own favourite destination, it has to be Rio de Janeiro.
“We specialise in Latin America, which comprises Mexico in North America, Central and South America.” And it seems the couple’s clients can be assured of three things - the most comprehensive combination of value for money, authentic activities and excellent service delivery.
Launching their own travel business seemed the obvious thing to do given their intimate knowledge of Latin America and their belief in excellent service. “We extensively travelled throughout my different jobs and always tried to plan it ourselves,’ Horacio said.
“Our main destinations are Peru, Argentina and Brazil in South America, and Mexico, Guatemala and Cuba in North and Central America. There are many more magnificent places if your time is unlimited but if you have three to four weeks, those are the places to go,” Horacio said.
“We love what we do, the satisfaction of giving our passengers a real experience.
“Our speciality is escorted groups but people can come to us so we can help design their own itineraries.”
64 ISSUE 73
As successful as their business is, Horacio and Stella’s goals go a little higher than that. For example, in Peru they have designed a strong social justice program with Mary McKillop International to help schools and women in need of education and income. They are also very selective in choosing local guides. “On top of the accreditation and experience, we always give the chance to choose those with indigenous ancestry. Stories told by an Inca, Maya or Aztec descendant give you more insight of their culture. These people are the very fabric of their communities and always will take us to that special place, festivity or religious celebration that is absent in the tourist board.” Indeed, with youngest daughter Mariana now involved in the business, they are tapping into missionary tours for young adults. They say they will continue doing what they do for many years to come.
with a group of people interested in going to the World Orchid Show in Ecuador in November 2017. The most exciting thing about what we do is the chance to learn more from the local people.” It’s no surprise then, that the couple regularly receive great feedback from their clients. A common one is: ‘It was much more than I thought’. “We pride ourselves on designing fully escorted or individual itineraries with the expertise that only local knowledge will provide, to give the best and most cost-effective experience.” The next big tour is the Wonders of the South Tour, which departs 2 October, and takes in Peru, Argentina and Brazil. To find out more about all the tours, visit www.latinamericadestinations.com e
“We love what we do. I am going with a group of high school students in September to Peru to work for a week in a school and afterwards do the Inca Trek. In October we have our traditional four weeks tour and we are in full swing promoting our 2016 programs with several bookings already confirmed,” Horacio said. They also see themselves expanding their programs. “Other opportunities like the theme tours are starting to generate real interest. We are actually working

Organic Fruit and Vegetables
Scrub Turkey was founded on the principal of sourcing local, organic and sustainable products. Their fruits and vegetables are handpicked from local farmers and 100% organic.
Why Choose Organic?
Do you remember being a kid and picking fruit straight off the tree? Do you remember the taste, texture and flavour? This is what has come to be known as organic produce. Essentially it is grown in chemical free soil and is free of all pesticides and is produced and consumed seasonally. It is thought that simply by washing fruits and vegetables you are able to remove any pesticides but in most instances this is not the case. If the produce has been grown in treated soil the possibility of these chemicals being absorbed through the root structure means that they are now inside the fruit and veg and obviously cannot be washed away.
The Ripple Effect
Choosing organic is not simply about good nutrition and reducing the toxins we put into our bodies. By choosing organic produce you are also contributing to the sustainability of the earth and our environment. Soil that is repeatedly treated with chemicals becomes unusable as farming land.
Making a Difference
By making the change to choosing organic produce you are making a difference in many ways. It begins by improving your own health and wellbeing, including that of your family. In turn you are giving back to your local community by supporting local growers, producers and farmers. And most importantly, you are helping to reverse the damaging environmental effects to our beautiful earth. Now imagine that every person made the change to organic…
Meet our SCRUB TURKEY Family… Mael Kelly Tell us your Scrub Turkey story: I moved back to the Sunshine Coast from Victoria and began working at BFresh (our sister store). I love the concept and the vibe at Scrub Turkey What do you love about being part of the Scrub Turkey family: I have found that being part of the family here I have changed my own habits and lifestyle. I understand the importance of choosing organic products and it has really opened my eyes to avoiding the chain stores and supporting the little guys locally. What is your favourite Scrub Turkey Product: I just love everything! Two of my favourites are the Saya Skin Care Range from Noosa. I love that it’s a local product made from natural ingredients. I also love the cold pressed juices made from local organic produce.

need to call us at all. The other option is to book via phone earlier in the day, or even earlier in the week. We can set bookings up to a year in advance, so it is always a good time to call if we have enough notice. The advantage of the app, is that you can track the booking. You can see if there are vacant cars and get notified when a cab does take the job. Once your job has been accepted, you can then actually contact the driver direct via text or phone if you want. It’s all about being a bit smarter!
That doesn’t mean that it is impossible to catch a cab, but it is best to be prepared. With a high volume of calls our time to dispatch bookings increases, so the best way around this is to ensure you are in the queue of jobs, not in the queue of phone calls. Using the App, or booking via the internet are two ways to by-pass the
