Once you know what course you want to apply for you can head over to our website: www.mbro.ac.uk

We have online application forms available for you to complete, simply find the course you want to study and click apply now. Remember to get your application in to us as soon as possible as places are offered on a first come, first served basis and many courses fill up fast!

4 Offer

You will then be offered a place on your course. This will either be on completion of your information session or by letter. If you change your mind about what course you want to study, don’t worry. Contact us and we will be able to get you onto your preferred course!

1 Be application ready

To apply to study with us you will need to get application ready. To do this you’ll need to make sure you have created an email account so that you can apply online.

Our Admissions Team will communicate with you through your email address and send you details about your information session and your offer of a place at College.

You’ll also need to know what course you want to apply for. You can come along to our campus Open Events to find out everything you need to know about our courses, meet our tutors and see our incredible facilities.

Information session

Following your application, you’ll be contacted by our Admissions Team to arrange an information session. This is nothing to worry about, it is a good chance to visit the College and meet your tutors. It also allows us to get to know what your career goals are and helps us work out if your chosen course is right for you.

Enrolment

Once you have received your GCSE results, you will be able to enrol onto a course in August ready to start your studies in September. If you have any questions about your application then get in touch with our Admissions Team on 06142 333601 or email: studentapplications@mbro.ac.uk

Can’t decide what course to study? No problem! You can apply to multiple courses and make your final decision during enrolment. We also hold taster sessions across the year so come along to those and find out more about the subject you wish to apply for.

A Level student Lola Becket secured a place at Durham University to study Japanese Studies after achieving an A* in English Language, an A* in English Literature and an A in Religious Studies.

Construction and the Built Environment Level 3 student Sulimaan Mohammed has secured his dream apprenticeship with manufacturer Gestamp after gaining a triple distinction star in his results! Sulimaan is set for an engineering technician apprenticeship with the company.

Niamh Else is set for the stardom as she progresses to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Following in the footsteps of Judy Dench, Laurence Olivier and Andrew Garfield, who also studied there, Niamh will study Experimental Art and Performance for three years before hopefully studying for a Masters in Acting.

Our courses

A Levels

A Levels are a great option if you are looking to progress to University. They allow you to keep your options open with focused study of three or four subjects across two years. A Levels are assessed through examinations.

Vocational Courses

Vocational courses are more practical and hands on and will equip you with skills in a specific sector area which can lead to a job or to University. Vocational courses are assessed through a series of assignments, presentations, practical observations, projects and examinations.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships allow you to earn whilst you learn! You will come to College alongside your job. An apprenticeship is a great choice if you are eager to earn money straight away and build your skills alongside experienced staff. Apprenticeships are assessed through workplace observations, exams and professional discussions.

T Levels

T Levels are a new qualification which are an alternative to A Levels. This 2-year qualification will help you to build the future that you want. You’ll spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% of your time in the workplace, putting the skills you’ve learnt into action.

Every T Level student will take an industry placement that lasts at least 45 days, helping you to gain valuable experience in the workplace and allowing employers to meet the new talent in their Tindustry.Levelsprovide the skills, knowledge and experience you need to open the door to highly skilled employment, University or an apprenticeship.

T Levels are assessed through practical employerset projects, assignments and examinations.

Course Levels and Entry Requirements

Entry Level: These courses will help you build up skills, experience and gain confidence to progress to Level 1. No formal qualifications are needed.

Level 1: These courses will help you progress on to Level 2 courses or into employment. These courses will prepare you with the skills in a specific trade/career.

Level 2: These courses allow you to begin specialising in an area you want to pursue as a career.

Level 3: These include A Levels, vocational qualifications (including Extended Diplomas, Diplomas, Certificates), T Levels and apprenticeships. A triple distinction star grade (D*D*D*) on a Level 3 vocational course is equivalent to three A* grades at A Level. You must have achieved an appropriate Level 2 vocational qualification and/or five GCSEs at grade 4/5 (C) or above.

Please note for some courses you will be required to start at Level 1 to gain the technical skills required.

It has been interesting learning the skills needed to carry out everyday tasks whilst at work as well as learning the background knowledge needed to work safely in a range of different laboratory environments whilst at TTE. Mollie Miller hasn’t let health issues stand in her way. The 18-year-old from Stockton has functional neurological disorder, which can cause seizures – seizures which have in the past been triggered by exam hall environments. We ensured that Mollie had the support and adjustments she needed to do her exams, sending an invigilator to her home to hold her exams there.

“If I hadn’t had the opportunity to have that kind of support, I simply wouldn’t have been able to do my exams. The College were so supportive throughout my studies and were very flexible in helping me get what I needed to complete my A Levels. Alumni student Emily Baxter is enjoying success in her new role at Frozen the Musical in the London West End production!

Emily, who studied Level 3 Production Arts at Middlesbrough College in 2017, was successful in gaining a place at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) to study Technical Production in Stage and Screen. Now, she has landed her first job since graduating, working as a Production Technician for the Disney smash hit musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Lourdes studied A Levels at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form in 2020 and is now studying for a degree in Biology at the prestigious Oxford University. Lourdes is hoping to progress to pursue a career in animal conservation.

Fin Preston’s career has taken off at Teesside International Airport as he is now working as a Multi-Skilled Operative, thanks to the support of the Aviation team at Middlesbrough College. Finn studied Level 3 Aviation Operations and progressed to study BA (Hons) Airport and Airline Management at Middlesbrough College.

“I decided to continue studying for my University course with Middlesbrough College as I wanted to stay local whilst also gaining a fantastic qualification. Whilst studying here I’ve gained experience at Teesside Airport working alongside the Duty Manager and the Air Traffic Control team- it was beneficial for my CV and helped me to decide what I wanted to do once I graduate. Matthew first came to study at Middlesbrough College back in 2013. He completed the first year of his Level 3 Diploma in Business and then progressed to a Hospitality Management apprenticeship. Matthew returned to Middlesbrough College to complete a degree in Business Management with Marketing.

Now, he has a teaching position back in Middlesbrough College’s business department, teaching first year Level 3 business students and the Access to Higher Education Diploma in business.

Taking A Level students higher

A Levels are academic courses and Universities, and employers love them!

A Levels are a good option if you are academic, and you want to progress to University. They allow you to keep your options open and study a range of degree programmes or progress straight into employment.

We also offer a range of A Level equivalent applied courses. These are vocationally orientated qualifications and are generally assessed through a mix of coursework and external examinations. These courses are ideal if you enjoy learning in a practical and workrelated way.

Our A Level students are based in MC6, a modern and vibrant environment which promotes independent learning and study. Our state-of-the-art facilities will provide you everything you need to succeed. Our A Level tutorials are designed to give you the essential life and career skills for your future! All of our teachers are A Level specialists and only teach Level 3 programmes.

We offer careers advice and guidance to help you make your decision about University. We also offer guest speakers from Universities across the country and visits to University Open Days, organised and funded by the College. Your personal tutor is central in supporting you with your UCAS application and you will receive dedicated 1:1 time to be supported.

Our dedicated Russell Group Co-coordinator also provides support with application and interview preparation if you are thinking of progressing to a Russell Group University! Our students are offered specialist support, advice and guidance on making applications to the top Universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. A Level students have access to at least three supported entry schemes for University. This can lead to lower UCAS offers from the likes of Durham, Leeds and Newcastle University. Types of degrees you can progress to

❱❱ Single Honours Degree

A bachelor’s degree is the most common undergraduate degree which typically takes three years of full-time study. Choosing a course in one subject is known as a single honours degree.

❱❱ Major/Minor Honours Degree

You may also be able to study a minor subject alongside the major subject for a portion of your degree, also known as a major/minor honours degree. The degree title names the major subject with the minor subject afterwards, for example Psychology with Criminology or Law with International Relations.

❱❱ Combined or Joint Honours Degree

Studying two or three major subjects as part of a bachelor’s degree is called a combined or joint honours degree. You’ll pick several modules per subject. Each subject you take will hold equal weight towards your final degree grade. Examples of joint honours degrees include Law and Spanish or Accounting and Business.

❱❱ Degree with placement year

Referred to as a ‘sandwich year’, this qualification is typically a four-year degree with the third year spent either studying abroad or working in a placement. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience learning in a new country or working in the sector you wish to be employed in.

❱❱ Degree apprenticeship

Degree apprenticeships allow you to study towards a bachelor’s degree part-time while also working. They can take between three and six years to complete and are offered by Universities in partnership with companies and professional bodies. You won’t be required to fund your degree apprenticeship, as both your employer and the government will do so.

In component 1, you will develop work for a personal investigation into an idea, issue, concept or theme supported by written material which will count for 60% of your total A Level mark. In component 2 you will produce personal work which will count for 40% of your total A Level mark.

There are three written exams at the end of the 2nd year. Within the qualification there are 12 assessed practical activities stipulated by the awarding body over the 2 years resulting in the completion of the Practical Endorsement Certificate – this is a Pass/Fail element of the course.

The qualification consists of one written exam based on the Theme of Love through the ages (40%) and one written exam focusing on texts with shared contexts (40%) which are taken at the end of the 2nd year.

You will also complete an independent piece of work which is a comparative critical study of two texts, at least one of which must have been written pre-1900, this accounts for 20% of the total A Level.

Assessment is made up of two 3-hour exams at the end of the course, questions are a combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions.

There are 2 written exams at the end of the second year, one focussing on varieties of film and filmmaking (35%) and the other on Global filmmaking perspectives (35%). There is also a production piece (screenplay or short film) with evaluative analysis which accounts for 30% of the total qualification.

This course is 100% examination. You will complete three written papers at the end of the second year.

Assessment on this course consists of three written papers taken at the end of the second year: - Physical Systems (22%), Human Interaction (22%) and Geographical Debates (36%). There is a also a Geography Investigation that is an independent project worth 20% of the final A Level grade.

There are 3 assessments in this qualification – 2 written examinations on Fundamentals of Geology (41%) and Scientific Literacy in Geology (37%). Then there is a practical assessment in timed conditions Practical Skills in Geology (22%), and the practical endorsement element of the course also must be completed.

The course is assessed through two 2-hour 30min written examinations with essay style questions that cover breadth and depth of the historical content (80%) and a historical investigation (20%)

There are three 2-hour written papers taken at the end of the second year, each paper is 33% of the final grade and questions are a combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions.

Coursework based - Students keep a sketchbook (either a physical sketchbook or online sketchbook), design sheets, presentation, journal or similar to keep a log of how their ideas have developed throughout the course and how they have produced a set of carefully considered final outcomes. For A Level students, there is a 15-hour period of supervised time at the end.

This course has three examinations, each 2-hour in length and worth 33.3%, taken at the end of the second year. The areas covered are: 1. Government and Politics of the UK. 2. Government and Politics of the USA and Comparative Politics and 3. Political Ideas

Our performing arts course allows you to specialise in three areas (Acting, Dance and Musical Theatre) and you will get the opportunity to build skills in your chosen area in our Christmas pantomime and end of year musical.
