GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

This, Too, Shall Pass A few years ago, Women In Trucking (WIT) decided to hold the Accelerate! Conference and Expo. We partnered with MindShare Strategies to create an exciting, new annual event that focused on empowering women working in supply chain. Our very first conference attracted over 300 women and men who came to learn, network and support the mission of WIT – all while having some fun.

Ellen Voie, CAE, President & CEO Women In Trucking Association, Inc.

Every year, we ask for feedback and we consistently hear common themes. The top reason for attending the conference is to connect with others (particularly women) who share a passion for transportation. Attendees want to learn how to be successful in a male-dominated environment and, ultimately, make an impact on the paradigm shift to more gender diversity and neutrality in the industry.

Ensuring relevant content is also important. Our speakers talk about negotiation skills, communication styles, industry trends in recruiting and retaining talent management, best practices across all disciplines, and so much more. We hold break-out sessions with panels and speakers and pre-conference events for networking and self-defense. Attendees clearly appreciate the quality content, peer networking, and access to resources. They have told friends and colleagues and encouraged them to attend – and, in 2019, we had more than 1,100 registered attendees!

We kept hoping we could meet in person. We watched as other conventions and conferences cancelled their in-person events, one by one. Yet, we closely monitored the situation, kept our fingers crossed and scheduled our speakers and our exhibits. Rooms were booked and flights were scheduled. After much thought and research, we ultimately made the decision to cancel the in-person event due to safety concerns. However, for the past several months we have been diligently focused on delivering a powerful networking and educational experience as we transition the in-person event to a virtual Accelerate! Conference and Expo in November. We’re adapting. We are learning. We’re mastering virtual meetings and finding new ways to engage and give you the best value for your investment. Thank you for supporting us and attending our virtual conference. We have designed a conference that is as interactive as possible, but we need your understanding that we’re still learning and adapting. We value your feedback, and we look forward to seeing you in Dallas next year. Remember, “this, too, shall pass,” and we hope to be back in person in 2021!

The 2020 conference was scheduled for September, and we expected to attract over 1,500 people. Then, COVID-19 hit.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

COVID-19’s Impact on Transportation and Gender Diversity What an unusual year this has been! The threat of COVID-19, dramatic changes in buyer behavior and an unusual economy have placed new pressures on transportation organizations to focus on keeping core transportation systems operational, supply chains nimble and workforces safe.

Brian Everett, ABC Group Editorial Director and Publisher Redefining the Road magazine

Long-term, companies are looking to strike a balance between reducing operations and providing enough capacity for key workers to practice social distancing and ensure workplace safety. Investment programs may need to be replanned and reprioritized in light of decreased revenue. Volatile capacity and pricing add an additional layer of complexity. When you add in working from home due to safety concerns – while under quarantine with children – life quickly gets even more complicated. Fortunately, many companies are working closely with their workforces to support valued employees as they navigate life at the intersection of working from home and parenting. In fact, several of this year’s Top Companies for Women to Work For in Transportation are doing just that. Many of the companies on this year’s list are focused on these factors: • Corporate culture supportive of gender diversity • Flexible hours/work requirements which help employees to meet family needs, personal obligations and life responsibilities – especially in these strange times of working from home and virtual classrooms • Competitive compensation/benefits for more educated women with specific training and skill sets

6 REDEFINING THE ROAD Edition 3 | 2020

• Training, continued education and development, including tuition reimbursement, professional training and attending events like Women In Trucking’s virtual Accelerate! Conference & Expo • Well-maintained/safe equipment and facilities to continue to attract more female professional drivers to this traditionally male role As the editorial team at Redefining the Road magazine rolls out our third annual list of the Top Companies for Women to Work For, these are the characteristics we looked for in the nominations received. In this unusual year, we are impressed with what these progressive companies are doing to create more gender diversity in their workforce — and continue to encourage other companies to follow their lead. Keep up the good work!

“We’re thrilled by the enthusiastic response to this initiative. It’s exciting to see people so passionate about their workplaces,” says Ellen Voie, President and CEO of Women In Trucking (WIT). “We applaud the companies on this year’s list for making a concerted effort to provide a positive working environment for women in the industry. Their best practices help to raise the bar for workplaces industry-wide.” The list, which begins on page 10, recognizes the 2020 Top Companies for Women to Work For in Transportation and identifies just a few of the qualities that helped them to earn a place on the list. While it is impossible to detail all of the initiatives underway, following is a closer look at some of the creative ways in which companies are supporting women in the workplace.

Fresh Facilities at Artur Express Female employees feel comfortable and welcome with women working in every department and a culture that recognizes the need to balance family and career. The company’s newly constructed headquarters facility offers unique features such as a fully equipped gym, free laundry room, showers and a fresh, clean common space for drivers. Financial Stability at Averitt Express As a 50-year old, privately held and financially independent company, Averitt offers a stable environment for females who may be a single parent or head of household. For added financial security, every associate, regardless of their title, has a retirement account and participates in a long-standing profit-sharing plan. The company offers women opportunities to learn and grow in their careers with the same rewards as male employees. Driver Training at Booster Fuel Booster supports the professional development of its female drivers. All drivers are certified to transport fuel and undergo extensive training to enhance their skills. For those who have their CDL but are interested in a career in the fuel area, an apprenticeship program is available with reimbursement for tanker and hazmat endorsements as well as the training program. A professional development program helps Service Pros to make the most of their career and advance with the company. Booster also offers flexible work hours, early equity opportunities and full benefits for drivers. Expanded Coaching at Frito-Lay Frito-Lay’s LIFT sponsorship program helps connect junior-level women with higher-level executives who can provide coaching, career development, visibility and networking opportunities. In return, sponsors gain insights into gender, generational and cultural differences that can improve awareness and drive cultural change within the organization. The company’s Women’s Inclusion Network (WIN) added a “Men Who WIN” subcommittee to ensure that male leaders have the tools and training they need to help coach and develop female leaders. Wellness Support at Peach State To support women and families, Peach State Truck Centers offers flexible work schedules that accommodate picking up and dropping off children while floating holidays allow for “sick” time. The company also offers a wellness

program with a personal health coach, workplace chaplains, personal financial planners and Dave Ramsey’s Smart Money program – all at no cost to employees. Empowering Women at Riverside Transport RTI recognizes strong women leaders and utilizes their skills — as drivers and in administration. Female brand ambassadors drive hot-pink Volvo rigs and vlog about their work as drivers to help promote women in the industry. The company cultivates a family atmosphere – from family-style meals prepared by the company

president to wedding and baby showers for all staff and drivers. Family Focus at Trimble MAPS Evidence of the company’s family-friendly culture can be seen in the private wellness room for nursing mothers (complete with television and refrigerator), six weeks of fully paid maternity or paternity leave and flexible working hours that help to provide work/life balance. A women’s group meets to discuss career development, foster personal growth and even hold book club meetings. n

ADVERTISER SPOTLIGHT: Peach State Truck Centers

Company Culture Creates a Great Workplace for Women at Peach State Statistics show that companies that support women in the workplace tend to be more successful than their competitors because of the contributions, skills and diverse thinking these women bring to an organization. At Peach State, 20 percent of the employees are women, with an average tenure of more than seven years. These women hold a variety of roles from entry-level to senior management. And that’s in a male-dominated trucking industry. Women have been influential contributors at Peach State Truck Centers since the company started in 1974. Peach State values their contributions, and the company culture has fostered empowerment and amplified female voices to great success over the years.

A company that fosters successful women has created a culture and environment where diversity in gender roles is a non-issue. Each female employee is a thread that is woven into the fabric of the organization and how the company functions. Women have the oppor-

tunity to step out of the confines of traditional thinking and take calculated risks. Rather than following a worn path, they feel empowered to create a new one. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has said, “If you push through that feeling of being scared; that feeling of taking risk, really amazing things can happen.” Part of being able to do that, is feeling supported by your leaders and your company’s culture. That’s what we have here at Peach State. Great workplaces for women also consistently realize an employee’s potential and provide additional opportunities for success. Recent research shows that women want new challenges at work. The Salary Project ™ research also shows women are actively (or passively) searching for new job opportunities. Although women in the workplace have made significant gains in the past six years, the 2020 annual Woman in the Workplace Study from McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.org shows that COVID-19 is threatening to erase those gains. The trucking industry will need to remain diligent and focused on supporting women and providing opportunities for growth. n

ARTUR EXPRESS is proud to be named a TOP COMPANY for women to work for in transportation for the second year in a row by the Women in Trucking Association.

This passion has been fostered by great mentors who have supported my drive to be a positive influence on those who work for me, provide accurate and timely information and develop solutions that improve financial performance for the company and our customers. According to the Wall Street Journal, the number of professional female truck drivers in the United States has risen 68 percent in the last ten years. Women are increasingly attracted to the profession because of the equal pay and the greater demand for truck drivers, but, as we look at the transportation and freight logistics industry more broadly, we see there

We recognize the incredible influence, contributions, skillsets and talent these women bring to the workplace and pride ourselves on creating an environment that provides equal opportunities for growth and leadership.

There are many opportunities for a prosperous and rewarding career. It’s all about finding a company culture that understands that outcomes are improved when people with different viewpoints have a seat at the table. In my 27 years at Estes Express Lines, I’ve seen this in practice throughout the organization every day. As Estes has grown tremendously over the past 89 years, it has never lost its family-owned mindset that views employees as its most important asset – providing them with the resources and support to grow professionally while still maintaining a healthy work-life balance.  One example of this is our in-house driver training program. While this is open to all employees, my female colleagues especially appreciate it because it allows them the opportunity to obtain their CDL license during their workday. FEATURE: Corporate Leaders Q&A

The View from the Top

Leadership in a Pandemic The coronavirus pandemic has tested the mettle of leaders around the world. To better understand the experience of executives in the transportation industry, Redefining the Road invited two of the finalists for the 2020 Influential Women in Trucking Award to share their perspective. The daughter of a truck driver, wife of a truck driver, mother of a truck driver, and a driver herself, Crystal Anderson has more than 40 years’ experience in the transportation industry. Today, she co-owns Donald D. Anderson Jr. Trucking with her husband and is Owner and President of loss-consulting firm, CL Anderson Consulting, LLC. She also serves as the Executive Chairman of the Nebraska Trucking Association and Secretary of the Great Plains Chapter of the American Society of Safety Crystal Anderson Engineers (ASSE).

24 REDEFINING THE ROAD Edition 3 | 2020

Kristy Knichel began her career in the transportation industry straight out of high school, working in a variety of roles for a local third-party logistics company in order to understand the inner Kristy Knichel workings of a successful operation. In 2003, she founded Knichel Logistics with her father and siblings, and she took over as President in 2007. She currently serves as Intermodal Logistics Conference Chair on the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) Board of Directors. RTR: What steps have you taken to help your clients weather the challenges of the pandemic? KK: We are doing our best to be flexible with customers as far as procuring equipment and navigating the challenges of capacity and peak season surcharges.

Communication is also vital. We need to ensure that our customers are not blindsided by changes that are occurring within the freight market, so we are communicating with them on a regular basis if their shipments may be impacted in any way. CA: This is a whole new world for transportation. We’re working to build even stronger relationships with customers by acting as a real team member. We’re talking to them about the problems they’re facing, asking how we can help and working to provide services they need. RTR: What are you doing to help navigate the current environment internally? KK: Keeping lines of communication open is even more valuable now than it was prior to these new challenges. We’re holding company Zoom meetings to help ensure that everyone knows what we are planning, provide a snapshot of how the company is performing and give employees an opportunity to ask questions.

CA: I make sure I’m aware of what’s going on – watching the news, seeking information from regulatory agencies and other sources – and sharing that information with drivers. As a consultant, I advise my clients to do the same. It’s also important to check in with drivers about what’s happening at customer sites. For example, are gates closed? Do they have specific PPE requirements? RTR: Are there any resources that have proved particularly valuable in this process? KK: While we always utilized communication platforms such as Join Me and Slack, we are all becoming experts in almost every video-conferencing platform that is out there!

Who’s the next Influential Woman in Trucking? Crystal Anderson and Kristy Knichel are two of six finalists for the Influential Woman in Trucking Award. Presented by the Women In Trucking Association (WIT) and sponsor Freightliner Trucks, the award recognizes women in the trucking industry who make or influence key decisions, have a proven record of responsibility, and mentor and serve as a role model to other women. This year’s finalists will participate in a panel discussion on Nov. 13, 2020, at the virtual Accelerate! Conference. The award winner will be announced following the session.

CA: We’re looking to organizations like Women In Trucking, state and local trucking associations, regulatory agencies, even insurance companies. We are all part of a great big team – all learning together, working together. We need to collaborate more. One hundred percent more. RTR: What have you learned, to date, from managing through this crisis? KK: You have to be nimble and agile. There was no playbook for this situation. In many cases, as we were receiving more information about this virus, we were reacting in the best way possible. CA: It is important to be a team player and communicate. Everyone is going through similar things. We can learn from each others’ experiences. Rather than reinvent the wheel, we need to share the wheel. RTR: With continued uncertainty ahead, what are your top priorities from a leadership perspective? KK: I’ll continue to set and communicate the vision I have for the company and ensure that our team has the appropriate resources to achieve that. CA: My first priorities are the health and safety of our team in conjunction with the financial stability of my organization and my customers’ organizations. Then, recognizing that the industry is going to grow, how do we prepare for and manage through these growth opportunities? We need to sit down and work with customers to make joint decisions on what will be needed. n

FEATURE: Selling in a Pandemic

Selling in the New Normal More than half of industry professionals (52 percent) reported that the coronavirus pandemic has made their jobs more challenging, according to a survey conducted earlier this year by Women In Trucking (WIT).

What specific challenges are sales professionals facing? Redefining the Road recently connected with two sales executives who are WIT members to discuss the current sales environment (virtually, of course).

Forging Connections at TransForce Group “The biggest issue with COVID is how to connect with buyers,” explains Kimberly Castagnetta, Kimberly Executive Vice President, Castagnetta Marketing, at TransForce Group, who sells workforce solutions for motor carriers. “Transportation is a people’s business first. Our branch managers and recruiting

26 REDEFINING THE ROAD Edition 3 | 2020

teams have always interacted with customers face-to-face at yards, docks, et cetera. Today, they can’t get in.” The need for social distancing and travel restrictions also has altered the look of sales presentations. “Previously, we would bring all our constituents together for an in-person presentation and outline our full value proposition,” Castagnetta says. “Now our sales presentations are more targeted – 30- to 45-minute virtual meetings with multiple individuals instead of a two-hour meeting with the whole buying group.” This more fragmented approach makes it challenging to showcase the company’s integrated portfolio of solutions, she points out.

Castagnetta predicts that a more virtual sales process likely will be the new normal. “I think it’s here to stay,” she says. “We’re going to adjust and determine how we can best support our sales reps and our customers.” Already the sales team has implemented virtual weekly sales huddles with small groups to provide coaching tips, share what’s working, etc. They recently launched a video platform utilizing gamification to assist with lead generation and a sales training program which focuses on virtual delivery. TransForce also has focused on a buyer persona approach and has partnered with an outside firm to conduct “voice-of-the-customer” research.

“Taking a much deeper dive with our core audience has helped us to better understand the value we bring to our customers, so we can maximize our scope of influence and expand into other sales workstreams within the same client,” Castagnetta explains. The company has beefed up communication tools and adapted marketing content to be more effective via virtual delivery mechanisms. They are also investing in autodialing technology to support outbound sales efforts.

hiccups seven out of 10 times, but we’ve made it work!” The company has even transitioned to virtual pilot reviews. “Usually, we would fly people to our customer center in Virginia to inspect their new trucks, but now we’re unveiling them virtually,” she explains, noting that customers have responded positively to the video walkarounds. One advantage of a more virtual sales process, Ameigh points out, is that customers generally

are able to schedule virtual meetings much more quickly than in person. As a result, deal cycles have been noticeably shorter in the past six months. “Obviously, the pandemic has caused numerous challenges, but there actually have been a lot of positives to come out of it as well,” she says. “Everyone has tightened up, reset. We’re reevaluating how we’re doing things. We’re working smarter.” n

Finding ways to connect with prospective customers personally is a top priority. “We need to find ways to get the human touch back into the sales process,” she says.

Offering Greater Flexibility at Volvo Trucks “COVID definitely has been challenging,” says Christina Ameigh, Regional Vice President – Western US, Volvo Trucks North America. “It has changed the way we’re doing business. We had to reset quickly – find new ways of working, new sales tools,” she explains.

Christina Ameigh

Moving inventory between locations, extending uptime services through year-end, modifying payment structures, and offering flexible terms for trade-ins are just a few of the ways the company has tried to support customers that are struggling in the pandemic, Ameigh says. “You have to be able to look at the whole situation and have empathy,” she says. “We need more creativity and flexibility than ever before.” The sales process has changed as well. The sales team now uses a mix of virtual and face-to-face meetings. “In the past, we would meet customers or dealers in more casual scenarios, such as business lunches or dinners. Today, we reserve in-person meetings for discussing critical issues,” Ameigh explains. Like so many companies, Volvo Trucks has turned to Skype and video conferencing for much of its interactions with clients. “Presenting can be tricky since we usually have three organizations involved – Volvo Trucks, the dealer and the customer,” Ameigh explains. “You run into firewall issues, bandwidth issues… There are probably technological www.WomenInTrucking.org 27

I Trucking Photo Contest Winners! Caught on Camera: HERoes of the Highway Professional drivers have been unsung heroes during the COVID-19 pandemic — putting their health at risk and working long hours to deliver essential goods and supplies. Inspired by their heroic efforts, the theme of this year’s “I Trucking” photo contest was HERoes of the Highway. Over 90 participants broke out their cameras and captured their favorite superheroes in front of their trucks. Women In Trucking (WIT) then invited industry professionals to vote for their top pick.

More than 8,000 votes were cast for the People’s Choice Winners. With over 1,300 votes, “Hero-like Strength” by Armour Transportation Systems Driver Susie De Ridder was the clear winner. Marcus Thompson’s entry featuring seven of Volvo’s professional truck builders came in second while Owner-Operator Ingrid Brown rounded out the top three with her self-portrait. “At Volvo Trucks, we are so grateful and proud of every professional driver, the HERoes of the Highway, and our employees for their time and commitment to the industry during these

challenging times,” says Thompson. “Each of the over 500 women at our NRV manufacturing plant are dedicated to providing premier products to all of the HERoes of the Highway!” In addition to the People’s Choice Awards, a panel of judges selected their favorite photos. Their top pick was “Rosie the Riveter” by J.B. Hunt’s Nancy Davis. Runners up include photos featuring cape-clad J.B. Hunt Driver Shunta Price and ReedTMS Logistics Driver Dawn Anstead.

practices and recognize creative solutions in different areas.

INCLUSION

In a male-dominated industry, best practices in diversity and inclusion can be hard to find. Women In Trucking is working to change that. In November, the organization will launch the WIT Diversity & Inclusion Index, developed in partnership with online driver training provider CarriersEdge. The new initiative will take a deep dive into industry-wide efforts to create a more inclusive workplace for both driving and non-driving staff. Industry fleets will be invited to participate in the program which will help to document diversity programs currently in use, share best

The program will benchmark diversity and inclusivity efforts enterprise-wide, from hiring to onboarding, management, coaching and leadership development. Interviews with company representatives and anonymous employee surveys will be used to capture program ideas and feedback on overall effectiveness. “Women In Trucking has made great strides in improving the workplace experience for women, both on and off the road but there’s still more to do,” explains WIT President and CEO Ellen Voie. “This Index will help us to quantify where we are today with diversity and inclusivity efforts, provide a benchmark against which to measure our progress, and establish a set of proven steps to help on that journey.” The Index is the culmination of a months-long effort from a task force led by WIT Vice President Debbie Sparks and comprised of WIT members

Many look to engage members in various ways, while others simply want to tie their company brand to WIT’s mission. This year, WIT has created a number of new opportunities to enable companies to formally accomplish any of the above through sponsored content, advertising and integrated marketing opportunities. “Last fall, we conducted an extensive communications audit to assess WIT members’ communication needs and preferences, gauge the effectiveness of current communication channels, and identify editorial topics of greatest interest in the future,” says Brian Everett, strategist for WIT. “Through this ‘voice of member’ research we learned that there were underutilized opportunities to help our members to communicate with each other while generating additional non-dues revenue to support WIT’s operations and mission.”

These opportunities include: • Advertising, sponsored content and thought leadership in the Redefining the Road magazine (published three times annually) and in the WIT eNews (published weekly) • Dedicated sponsored emails and sponsored content via social media channels • Whitepaper campaigns and lead generation packages • Thought leadership, exhibit and sponsor opportunities at the Accelerate! conference and at the Salute events. “The mission of WIT is to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, to promote their accomplishments and to minimize the obstacles they face,” says Ellen Voie, WIT President and CEO. “These channels bring together a powerful community of professionals seeking to educate the market and encourage gender diversity.
