from the president As we all navigate the pandemic in our own unique way, our Members’ usage of the Club varies widely. We understand and respect that some Members have not spent much time at the Club in several months. Please know you are missed, and we look forward to seeing you in person soon. On the other hand, our Club is open, and many of our Members utilize the Club on a daily basis. The Club continues to adhere to protocols that include temperature checks for everyone entering our Clubhouses, masks for our employees and Members as they move about the Clubhouses, hand sanitizing stations and appropriate social distancing where possible. In addition to fitness, indoor and outdoor dining, hair care and the pools, Members use the Clubhouses for workspace as an alternative to their home or office. Our recent events and specials have been a huge success. At the Cigar-B-Que event, our Members enjoyed perfect weather while spread out on the garage rooftop with great food, cigars and live music. It was fun to see some smiles and joy after many months without much of either. The Wine Society held a magnificent evening in the Missouri Room. Our Thursday afternoon grill nights on the patio at the West Clubhouse are a favorite for Members. We even held an event where Members entertained new and prospective Members. These recruitment events will be held monthly and represent a great way for our Members to introduce the Club to prospective Members, which are the lifeblood of the Club. Whatever your comfort level, the Club offers a safe place to dine, work, work out and meet friends and colleagues for a drink or a meal. Also, thank you to the more than

750 Members who completed the MAC COVID-19 survey. Your responses provide excellent insight into how you currently use the Club, what services and amenities you value, what concerns you have and how we can make your Club experience more valuable during this time. Several themes emerged from the responses. F We are pleased to hear that our members largely believe we strike the right tone with our COVID response, have confidence in Club leadership and are optimistic about the future of our Club. F With respect to COVID, those using the Club convey a high comfort level in all areas, specifically fitness, the barbershop, the pools, dining and the hotel. We are pleased that we only experienced a handful of COVID cases among our employees since reopening and that, to date, no case transferred to another employee or Member. F You also offered many excellent ideas on how the Club can enhance programs and services to add more value to your membership. MAC staff intends to incorporate many of these responses into the programs and services offered at the Club. We recently convened a Member engagement task force to, along with the staff, focus on Club life during the pandemic. Our ask is that you continue to share your thoughts, ideas and feedback as to how we can continue to improve our Club and make it more relevant to you during the pendency of the pandemic. You can reply to any of the daily communications, and we welcome your feedback. Additional good news is that our Club remains on stable financial footing. Last month, the Board approved a breakeven budget for fiscal year 2021 that

recognizes revenue challenges resulting from low hotel usage, diminished banquet revenue and a reduced membership. The budget optimizes operating costs while maintaining excellent Member services and amenities and delays discretionary capital spending as we await clarity surrounding the pandemic. This budget assumes COVID restrictions continue in their current form into 2021. The Board will monitor the situation on a weekly basis and act promptly if the situation merits adjustments to the budget. In the meantime, we continue to conduct long range strategic planning for the Club. Thank you to the Board and staff for their hard work in these areas. The Club offers some exciting events in October. On Oct. 9, we will host the Women of Distinction event. At this event, the MAC will honor seven local women who have been revolutionary in business, civic engagement, philanthropic programs and mentorship. The event will be a hybrid with live and virtual attendees. Spots remain available. Also, the annual Classics and Cocktails will take place at the West Clubhouse on Oct. 15. Please join your fellow Members at the Club at these events. Thank you for your continued commitment to the Club. Our Board, management team and employees continue to work extremely hard to make our Club relevant and sustainable. Our Club is open, and we look forward to seeing and hearing from you and your guests at the Club!

Dan Lett, President Missouri Athletic Club

from the general manager At the end of August, we sent a survey to all MAC Members to gain a deeper understanding of how COVID-19 is affecting your lives and your usage of the MAC facilities. A professional private club survey provider conducted and collected the survey, which ran from Aug. 19 to Sept. 2. More than 750 Members completed the survey, and we learned that nearly 85 percent of those surveyed believe the Club has had a “good” or “excellent” response to the pandemic. Following the survey, we sent a series of five emails detailing some key highlights and statistics from the survey results. Topics included an overview of the survey, Club finances, security, dining and athletics. In the included videos, I talked Members through each of the subjects. We had a lot of great feedback and are taking your comments and notes into consideration.

We were thrilled to find out that nearly 85 percent of those surveyed are optimistic about the future of the Club and nearly 90 percent are confident in the Club’s leadership team to keep them informed. Recently, an older Member of the Club told me that the MAC is the only place they’ve visited regularly over the past several months because it’s where they feel the safest. At the end of the day, that’s the intent. We want you to come on back out. Those interested in reviewing the results of the survey can find the full PDF on the Member Documents page of our website. On another important topic, our Nominating Committee, led by Past President Keith Phoenix, just convened its first committee meeting for the 2021 Board of Governor election. Wow, how time flies! Last year, the Nominating Committee, Governance Committee and Board of Governors presented

our first Orientation to Club Governance event to a great group of engaged members. It was so well-received that we did it again in February and have decided to do it again. This year, the Orientation to Club Governance will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the West Clubhouse. If you would like to get involved by serving on the Club’s committees or Board of Governors, I encourage you to attend. There will be an informal presentation, but more important, you will have an opportunity to ask questions and hear from Members just like you who stepped up to serve our wonderful Club. Come get involved!

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

SECURE YOUR PLATINUM PARTNERSHIP The Platinum Partnership has been a recruitment tool for the Club since its inception approximately 10 years ago and it has added a great boost to Club Members referring their friends and colleagues over the years. One side-effect of this program has been the negative effects of losing a Platinum Partner who resigns or takes a leave from the Club. This negative aspect as especially come to light during the pandemic and unfortunate lockdown of the MAC facilities. In an effort to make the Platinum Partnership program an entirely positive experience, the Membership Committee and Board of Governors have approved the following changes to the plan. F Effective Oct. 1, all Members who are in the Platinum Partnership dues category will remain in the category even if their Partner should resign or go on a leave from the Club. F This will remain in effect until such time as any Board of Governors could make changes to the Membership categories in the future. F To form a new Platinum Partnership, any current Member of the Club must also be the new Members Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. F Now is the perfect time for any Member in the Diamond Club or A la Carte categories to recruit a Member and lock in their Platinum Partnership.

MAC EMPLOYEE Holiday Fund

The holiday season is fast approaching, which prompts us to reflect on the outstanding year of events and accomplishments that we have enjoyed. None of these events would have been possible without the diligent work throughout the year of our wonderful staff. We see them every day, or if we don’t see them, we see the effects of their work in the locker rooms, the kitchen, the basement laundry room and engineering offices. Our hardworking staff is what keeps both clubhouses running smoothly. Annually, the Employee Holiday Fund extends a holiday bonus to the MAC staff and supports the MAC’s charitable entities. The MAC’s employees are always incredibly thankful to the Club’s membership for this outpouring of appreciation, and a small portion of the funds are allocated to the Preservation Foundation and the CSC and used to carry on the Club’s values of tradition, community and culture. On your Oct. 31, 2020 statement (both paper and digital), please notice a Voluntary contribution charge in the amount of $100 shown as “Empl Holiday/Foundations Cont.” The funds will be allocated as shown unless you notify the accounting office otherwise. F $95 Employee Holiday Fund F $2.50 Preservation Foundation (tax deductible) F $2.50 MAC Charitable Society for Children (tax deductible) Remember, these contributions are Voluntary and can be left as is or be adjusted in any proportion, if desired, by contacting the Accounting Department or using the form available on the MAC website.

MAC CATERING: DiningDifferently

During the pandemic, it has been the Missouri Athletic Club’s mission to help Members feel safe coming to the Clubhouse. This means our staff has gone above and beyond providing new opportunities to be a part of the Club during COVID-19. The MAC’s catering staff have also adapted during this time to bring private parties the premier quality the MAC is known to have. out. We can reserve the parking lot patio “beer garden” for events and are able to have a bar outside. As far as food, we offer plated meals and are doing boxed lunch, which seems to be working out well for meetings. We are constantly keeping up with the guidelines and how things are changing. We have taken the displayed items such as the meat and cheese boards and made them into skewers. Or breakfast we have created a continental plated with the fresh fruit and muffin individualized.”

Downtown Assistant Director of Operations “Now more than ever, we are tailoring events to meet clients’ specific needs. We ensure that

guests have the social distancing they are looking for at their events and have become increasingly flexible in room usage, etc. An event that previously was held in the Laclede Room may now be in the much larger Crystal Room or even Missouri Ballroom. We have also noticed a trend that guests are more comfortable attending events outdoors during these COVID times, so we offer our garage rooftop or building rooftop options. Currently, we are able to accommodate events at 50% of the venue capacity, so we have lots of options to provide our guests to be social and feel safe and secure all at the same time. We are providing individually wrapped grab and go meal options, or chef attended buffets rather than the previous self-service style. Plated meals are also a great option to minimize contact and cross-contamination.”

Vote for the Top 50 Sports Personalities

OF THE PAST 50 YEARS VOTI N G C LOS E S OC T. 3 0

The 2020 Jack Buck Sports Awards, presented by Redbird Carriers, will take place in December 2020. Follow MAC emails and social media for further details.

CRAIG BERUBE, BOB GIBSON, VLADIMIR TARASENKO, KURT WARNER, LOU BROCK, ALBERT PUJOLS, JACKIE JOYNER-KERSEE, BRETT HULL, ADAM WAINWRIGHT AND OZZIE SMITH

This year has been unlike any other in sports history, with abbreviated seasons and teams playing in empty venues. For the 2020 Sports Personality of the Year, the Missouri Athletic Club is taking a look back and celebrating the 50 years of the award. In 1970, Missouri Athletic Club Member Jack Buck established the Sports Personality of the Year Award to annually honor the top figure in St. Louis. For a half-century, beginning with Bob Gibson winning the inaugural award and through the most recent honoree Craig Berube in 2019, an impressive list of Hall of Famers, star players and coaching legends have received the prestigious trophy at the MAC’s Jack Buck Awards Banquet. Previously, only Members of the MAC have been eligible to vote for the Sports Personality of the Year Award. But to commemorate the golden anniversary of the award, voting will be open to all St. Louis sports fans this year. You will have the 12 F Cherry Diamond F OCT 2020

opportunity to vote for the top 50 St. Louis Sports Personalities of the past 50 years (1970-2020). It is open ballot and not limited to past Sports Personality of the Year winners. Online voting will conclude Friday, Oct. 30. Go to mac-stl.org and vote for as many as 50 local sports figures from the past 50 years. A first-place vote is worth 50 points, 2nd place 49 points and continues in descending order. You do not have to submit all 50 spots to have your vote counted. In December, the results of the Top 50 will be revealed through a countdown at the Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet presented by Redbird Carriers. The show will air live on KMOX Radio and will be recorded for a show on FoxSports Midwest. For more on the history of the Missouri Athletic Club’s Sports Personality of the Year Award and a complete list of past winners, go to (mac-stl.org/awards/jack-buck-awards). This event always sells out early, so be on the look out for more information in the MAC’s emails or on social media.

Queen of the Court

MAC Squash Champ Margaret Pruett Recruited by St. Lawrence Universtiy MP: I committed to St. Lawrence University in New York, and I will be going there next fall to play squash. CD: Was that one of the schools that you were looking at attending or was it even on your radar? MP: It was one of my top three schools. I sort of fell in line with St. Lawrence because of the coaching. Scott Denne [head coach of St. Lawrence], who had worked here a number of years before I came here, knows Mike Puertas who has held tournaments here and is one of my Burroughs coaches. So I decided to go that route since I knew him, and that’s where I was recruited. CD: Were you recruited by any other schools? MP: I was recruited by Vassar, Haverford, St. Lawrence, Franklin and Marshall and Bowdoin. CD: When did you start playing squash? MP: I started playing since I could hold the racquet, so probably about age three or four. Competitively, I’ve only played for about six years. CD: Tell me a bit about your squash journey. MP: My dad played in college, so he had my brother and I play at a young age. My brother quit playing, but I took off. I think it was when we moved to the MAC that I started playing competitive tournaments and worked my way up. It wasn’t until this last year that I broke into Gold Level matches. Before that, I was consistently placing well in Silvers, but I hadn’t really gotten to winning a couple rounds in a Gold until the last couple tournaments that I played when I won two rounds in each of the two last Golds that I played. I started to get even better, and of course we were hoping for more, but then COVID happened. CD: Tell me about your experience here. MP: I’ve had a lot of coaches and think it has been good for me, but I was really excited when Alex [Ingham] came back because he was one of my best coaches. That’s been a real help in the past year since he’s helped push me a little further. Overall, I think the MAC has been great. After all, I’ve been able to play with other

juniors because there’s not many juniors in the St. Louis area. Being able to play with the MICDS guys is important because Dena and I are the only girls that play in the St. Louis area who are very competitive. CD: So what has your experience been with Alex as a coach? MP: As I said before, I honestly think Alex was one of my best coaches. It was great when he came back because there has been a lot of coach turnover. It was great to get one that I have had before especially one that worked so well with me. Alex specifically has helped me at tournaments by traveling to the majority of my tournaments. He and Matt Jensen were the only coaches who have traveled with me. CD: What is your favorite aspect of playing squash? MP: I don’t want to sound weird, but I think it is the competition. That’s definitely one of my favorite things. I like the community as well because I feel like I know a lot of people up here at the Club since we all play squash. CD: What are you most excited about your future playing squash? MP: I think I’m just excited for college squash in general. I’m really excited to keep playing and to have a coach who knows my other coaches as well as my strengths and how to pull those out of me.

A Hole-in-One for Foundations Foundations’ Month culminated in the annual sold-out Preservation Foundation Golf Tournament, which occurred on Monday, Aug. 31, at Glen Echo Country Club. This event gave Members a chance to get together for a day of golf and camaraderie with the unified MAC spirit after a long hiatus. The day began with registration starting at 10:30 a.m. Participants were given time to explore the club and other vendors and bagged lunch before they were off to golf starting at noon. Although rain was in the forecast, the slight showers cut the humidity and made for great weather for golfing. The highly anticipated event was presented by Redbird Carriers and the Stacie Lee Belew Scholarship Fund this year. After golf play concluded, MAC meembers regrouped at Glen Echo’s clubhouse for a delicious meal followed by a silent auction and a eventually a live auction honoring past MAC president Kim Tucci. Among the auction items was a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Floridian Golf Club, which was donated by Mark Belew of Redbird Carriers.

GOOD FOUNDATIONS Project to Restore the Downtown Clubhouse Nears Completion

The exterior renovations on the Downtown Clubhouse are nearing completion. The project began earlier this year as part of the Building on Tradition Campaign to restore and beautify the Downtown Clubhouse. This project was made possible through a grant from the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation and generous donations from our Members to the Building on Tradition Fund and at the Preservation Foundation Ball, which took place

earlier this year on Feb. 15. Thank you to the many generous Members who were integral in making this project a possibility. These renovations on the exterior of the building are taking place on both the eastern and southern-facing elevations. This project includes tuckpointing, power washing, wood windows, metal rails, window lintel and sills, terra cotta, granite and limestone. Other work includes masonry cleaning and brick water repellent.

Leaving a Legacy

AFTER

Do You Have a Will? An Estate Plan? Amazingly, more than 50 percent of adults in the United States do not have a will or an estate plan, and many wills and estate plans have not been updated in many years. Writing wills and estate plans and updating them takes time and can be expensive, but one easy and inexpensive way to ensure that your heirs and favorite charities receive assets at the time of your death is through beneficiary designations. Beneficiary designations are easy to make and easy to change. In order to leave a lasting legacy here at your Club, please consider designating the MAC or one of its three foundations (Preservation, Sports and Arts) as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts (IRAs, 401ks, 403bs, etc.) or a life insurance policy.

PREPARE FOR A HEALTHY FUTURE From the youngest to oldest, caring for one’s body by living a healthy lifestyle can positively impact physical and mental health. Health concerns increase with age, so it is important for seniors to pay attention to their bodies and understand that there are multiple ways to keep the mind and body sharp as they age. The following are some ideas for seniors to improve their health: LEARN TO COPE WITH CHANGE The senior years can be a time of joy and stress. Building resilience and exploring new ways of coping with challenges are crucial. Learn to make the most of good times and keep things in perspective during times of hardship. A few ways to do this: focus on your blessings, learn to acknowledge and express feelings, accept the aspects of life that cannot be changed, stay positive and learn from mistakes, and face daily challenges with a can-do attitude. KEEP LAUGHING Maintain a sense of humor throughout the senior years. Laughter triggers physical responses in the body that are crucial to wellbeing: F Boosts the immune system by decreasing cortisol, a stress hormone F Protects the heart and improves blood vessel functions F Decreases blood pressure and improves overall circulation and oxygen intake F Releases endorphins into the body resulting in a sense of wellbeing and even temporary pain relief

At the MAC: Cultivate friendships at the MAC and celebrate good-hearted camaraderie with plenty of laughter! STAY ACTIVE Fitness is often seen as a hardcore workout in the gym, but it is much more. Staying active in little ways is extremely beneficial to maintaining a healthy life. For those who are older, going for daily or weekly walks can greatly improve body strength and mobility.

At the MAC: Attend water aerobics classes at the MAC. Both the West (seasonal) and Downtown clubhouses offer water aerobics classes a few mornings each week. EAT THE RAINBOW Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is important for all people, but as everyone ages, it becomes imperative to monitor what people put into their diet. Eat healthy to maintain a healthy weight, consume all the right nutrients, and most importantly, feel
