LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT I

hope everyone who attended the 120th Anniversary Gala on Feb. 11 had a fantastic time as I know I did! Thank you to all Club staff and first-year Board of Governors especially Jodi Peterson for putting this event together. The décor, food stations, and live music from the Naked Karate Girls kicked off the Club’s 120th anniversary year in such a festive way!

As we are celebrating the Club’s 120th anniversary, Don Nies is celebrating his 75th year as an MAC Member. I was honored to attend Don’s luncheon in the Sportsman’s Club’s Hall of Fame room on Monday, Feb. 6. It was another great opportunity to reminisce on the history of the Club. Don’s contributions to the Club have not gone unnoticed! The Board of Governors made a proclamation recognizing Feb. 26, 2023 as Don Nies Day at the MAC.

The year is moving fast, but those who participated in the MAC Commit to Fit Program have not regretted it! Thank you to Courtney Hutt, Paul Helfrich and all of our training staff who have been keeping so many MAC Members on track with their health journey. To Members looking to create healthy habits, our full wellness team is ready to assist!

As the air gets warmer, Members are reminded that golf season is right around the corner! I am pleased to report that we have finalized an agreement to continue our Dual Member program with Glen Echo Country Club. Members who participate are eligible for full membership privileges at GECC. Space is limited. Contact Rodney Stoyer, MAC Director of Membership, at rstoyer@mac-stl.org for more information.

The full MAC golf calendar has not yet been finalized, but the Dalhousie Play Day in Cape Girardeau has been set for June 17. Call their golf shop at 573-332-0818 ext. 309 to reserve a tee time starting at 11 a.m. The MAC Golf Club has also finalized a date for their 2023 season kick off event. Join other golfers at the Downtown Clubhouse on March 29.

With athletics being our middle name, the Jack Buck Grille is the place to be before professional sporting events. St. Louis CITY SC starts playing at CITYPARK this month, and the Battlehawks will also begin filling the

Dome at America’s Center just across the street from the Downtown Clubhouse. Enjoy dinner and drinks and then hop on the shuttle to a CITY SC game, Blues game and Cardinals game beginning in April. Tailgates will start two hours ahead of Battlehawks home game days at the rear entrance of the Club on Lucas Avenue. Buy your tickets from mac-stl.org/XFL and use the password MAC in order to get the group rate and have $3 per ticket donated to the Youth & Family Center.

Construction is underway on the YFC gym restoration project. We are excited for the efforts of the MAC Sports Foundation to come to fruition! Details will be forthcoming regarding properly recognizing and celebrating the generosity of all those who donated to the project and the completion of the same.

As we look forward to Easter on April 9, be sure to reserve your spot for the Easter Egg Hunt at the West Clubhouse along with Easter Brunches held at both Clubhouses. Reservations for all three of these events open on Monday, March 6 at 10 a.m.

I am privileged to attend the MAC Employee Service Awards Dinner on March 9. It makes me proud to be part of a Club that values the best staff and exceptional Members. I want to extend an additional thank you to Harry Lanfersieck, the West Clubhouse’s distinguished employee.

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Aproject that we are all very passionate about is off to a grand start! Missouri Floor Company began work on the Youth & Family Center’s basketball court on Feb. 20. This project has been in the works since Member Michael McMillan, President and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, brought it to our attention. This initiative fit perfectly within our civic engagement mission of purposefully reaching out in impactful ways to assist our neighboring downtown community.

We started by raising $50,000 from the MAC Sports Foundation, then we inspired the American Hellenic Foundation to donate $50,000, and we encouraged Club Members and staff to participate as well and they have donated an additional $15,000.

Recently, First Mid Bank & Trust, the MAC’s current banking partner, announced a $25,000 donation to the YFC initiative. So far, the transition from Jefferson Bank, our banking partner for over 30 years, to First Mid has been seamless and when we told them about our work with the YFC, they immediately wanted to support the effort. Thank you to Kathleen Tallis, VP of Commercial Lending at First Mid, and Brian Gibson, First Mid’s SVP of Corporate Community Development, for their help in securing this generous donation.

Also, the MAC Foundation for the Arts will be contributing to the initiative by helping with aesthetic enhancements to the YFC’s main entrance and lobby space outside the gymnasium. Past Governor Chris Hyams and his company GS&S Construction deserve a huge thank you for their time and expertise shepherding us through this impactful undertaking.

Members, and some of us staff have given money to this effort, but there is more work to be done. I encourage any business or individual interested in directly impacting the lives of our downtown neighbors to contribute to our $200,000 goal. We are close. To the MAC Members who have already donated – thank you for your support! To donate, visit mac-sportsfoundation.org, or contact

Kara Kelpe at

to get involved.

The relationship between the MAC and the YFC won’t end when the court and main entrance enhancements are completed. This partnership will continue as we bridge gaps in St. Louis.

Of course, we’re always working to improve ourselves at the same time. Already this year, we have redone the women’s locker room, men’s locker room and pro shop at the West Clubhouse. The 1903 dining room and fitness renovations were also completed recently out at West.

Now we plan to wrap up the year by giving the Town and Country Room, our banquet room in the back, a total refresh. We plan to have it open in the first part of April. It’s going to be a great space where Members will be happy to have events, business meetings and more. To reserve space, be sure to call Emma Pranger at 314-539-4490, and take a look at the renderings posted at West to get a feel for how the space will look and feel.

I want to give a big shoutout to those who helped to make the 120th Anniversary Gala a success! It was an incredible night! It truly was a team effort with people from the West Clubhouse collaborating with Downtown to make it all magnificent! Thank you to our catering team, event planning team, culinary staff, Chef Bart, Chef Charles, servers and more! Thanks to the freshman class of Governors who assisted our staff with designing and brainstorming, and of course I must tip my hat to the Naked Karate Girls who helped us keep the party going well past midnight!

The gala helped us kick off the Club’s 120th Anniversary campaign. More events throughout the year will feature this anniversary campaign culminating in a final celebration in September.

See you at the Club!

Brings the XFL to MAC Members

Brandon Williams, former NFL wide receiver, MAC Member and native St. Louisan, has taken over as the Vice President of Business and Event Operations for the St. Louis Battlehawks. Prior to his position with the Battlehawks, Williams worked in innovations marketing for Anheuser-Busch.

He’s excited for the Battlehawks to return to The Dome at America’s Center.

“I’m looking for the fans of St. Louis to be fully engaged, selling out the Dome, filling the Dome, making sure that the fans are having a great time, and that we have a winning team on the field and everybody’s just having fun,” Williams explained.

It’s no secret that the XFL game-day atmosphere is different from that of other football leagues. Williams said he is excited for fans to get to “literally touch the players pre-game, post-game, get on the field, get autographs, do high-fives, have young fans live their dream and come on the field and interact with the players.”

MAC Members will have the opportunity to access even more.

“They can see some of the behind-thescenes things and get more experiences with our players, with our coaches and even our staff, just to start building that relationship.”

Don Nies Celebrates 75 Years at The MAC

Don joined the Club on Feb. 26, 1948. He is only the second MAC Member to reach a 75th Club anniversary.

“It’s a marvelous Club and a great experience I’ve had throughout my life,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Throughout his time as a Member, Don has been extremely involved in Club life. Although he himself never ran for Club governance, he always helped others with their campaigns and worked on Club Election Day. For 52 years he played Gin Rummy on Tuesday evenings with a group of 15 MAC Members. Sometimes the games lasted late into the night. Now, he occasionally plays bridge on Tuesday evenings at the West Clubhouse. When it comes to sports, Don played handball, swam laps and, once MAC West opened, was a frequent tennis player. At 96 years old he still works out at West four times per week.

Four generations of the Nies family have been MAC Members. This tradition started

with Don’s father, Adolph Peter Nies. In 1975 Don’s daughter Connie Nies Finger and her husband Jim Finger joined the Club and two of Don’s granddaughters, Julie Finger Fowler and Laura Poindexter, joined the Club along the way as well.

Don and his wife attended countless New Year’s Eve parties at the MAC, where men wore tuxedos, women wore ball gowns and the countdown to midnight was always televised.

He remembered those nights fondly saying, “Now that was a lot of fun!”

He and his four daughters also attended numerous Father-Daughter Dances.

Don’s daughter Connie married Jim Finger at the MAC in 1975 and four of his granddaughters had their weddings at the MAC in 2001, 2004, 2006 and 2009.

“It was always so beautiful,” Don said about the weddings he attended in the

Missouri Room.

His grandfather started their family printing business, Nies-Kaiser Printing Company. Don eventually became president of the company, which was later sold, and the name changed to Nies/Artcraft. The company printed the Cherry Diamond for 25 years.

Throughout Don’s 75-year membership, a lot has changed.

“It’s so much different than it was many years ago, especially in athletics with the swimming and the competitions,” he said.

Mr. Nies was honored with a luncheon on Monday, Feb. 6 in the Sportsman’s Club’s Hall of Fame room. Members of his family, MAC General Manager Wally Smith and Club President Brent Beumer among others were in attendance. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch and an indulgent chocolate cake.

“It worked out like a dream,” he said.

The MAC Book Club Monthly Readings

Wednesday, March 8 F 6 p.m. F Downtown Clubhouse

Thursday, April 13 F Stay tuned for updates

The MAC Shuttle will be available for Book Club Members and will depart the West Clubhouse at 5:30 p.m. to travel to the Downtown Clubhouse.

On Wednesday, March 8, John Salter will guide the MAC Book Club through a discussion of State of Terror by Hillary Rodham Clinton, the 67th secretary of state, and Louise Penny, a multiple award-winning #1 New York Times bestselling novelist.

After a tumultuous period in American politics, a new administration has just been sworn in. To everyone’s surprise, the president chooses a political enemy for the vital position of secretary of state.

There is no love lost between the president of the United States and Ellen Adams, his new secretary of state. With this appointment, he silences one of his harshest critics, since taking the job means Adams must step down as head of her multinational media conglomerate.

On April 13, the Book Club welcomes Patrick Fleming, author of Gaia’s Revenge who, with Helen McGlynn, will lead the discussion of this debut novel.

Gaia, Mother Nature herself, is secretly waging war on humanity. Her desire for revenge will not relent until we listen to her warnings. The world’s press reports a series of mysterious, deadly disasters. Four unlikely heroes, a Catholic nun, a Hindu priestess, a gay Protestant minister and a Tlingit Indian woman marine biologist receive a shocking vision and message for humanity.

Gaia’s Revenge is a Book of Revelation for the 21st century, an apocalyptic fantasy based on the very real crisis of global warming and its threat to the future of humanity. Email Dr. Genie McKee, Book Club Chair, for reservations at evmckee@gmail.com.

CELEBRATING THE PAST, LOOKING TO THE FUTURE The 120th Anniversary Gala

On Saturday, Feb. 11, more than 300 Missouri Athletic Club Members donned their best black-tie attire and stepped back in time at the 120th Anniversary Gala. It was a journey through the ages as guests immersed themselves in a world of luxury and elegance, celebrating the incredible Club’s most memorable milestones.

As guests entered the Club, they were transported to the inception of the MAC in 1903. They were greeted with live music, delicious food, entertainment and drinks that set the scene of the 1904 World’s Fair.

As the night progressed, guests visited different eras of the Club and immersed themselves in the unique atmosphere of each. From the glitz and glamour of the roaring 20s to the exceptional moments of the 2000s, guests had a far-out time dancing the night away, socializing and honoring the Club’s brilliant legacy.

The 120th Anniversary Gala was a resounding success, with guests raving about the experience and the memories they created.

Relive the celebration by checking out our photo gallery on Facebook @macstlouis.

The 120th Anniversary Gala was the signature kick-off for what will be a celebratory year for the Club, with a calendar full of unforgettable activities for Members. The MAC’s Annual Boxing Championship and Good Fellowship Day are legendary events that bring Members together to celebrate the spirit and camaraderie of the Club; on March 11, the MAC parade float will be featured in the 54th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade downtown; and the legendary Apollos will lift their voices in their Spring Concert. Each event will feature a unique 120th-themed element to celebrate this momentous milestone.

Look for upcoming exclusive event details in this issue of the Cherry Diamond and the MAC Minute e-newsletter. Stay connected through the MAC Member App, on social media and visit mac-stl.org/History to learn more about the MAC’s legacy.

Recognizing the Remarkable Women of the Missouri Athletic Club During Women’s History Month

In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity, and shortly thereafter, the first female Member was welcomed to the exclusive Missouri Athletic Club. She also happened to be the first American athlete to win a gold medal in the Olympic long jump and the first woman to win back-to-back gold medals in the heptathlon. Jackie-Joyner Kersee is considered one of the greatest female athletes in history, and her membership opened the doors for many women as the MAC expanded its facilities and programs to serve the needs of its female Members better.

Since then, women have played an essential role in the Club’s history and its continued success, including history-making leadership roles. In 2021, Angie Minges, a Strategic Planning Leader at Nestlé Purina, became the MAC’s first female president. Minges also chaired the Women’s Initiative Group (WIG), a committee established to support and encourage the involvement of women at the Club. The WIG hosts events and programs specifically for women, as well as promotions, networking, and mentorship

opportunities for its Members. Currently, MAC treasurer Cheri McLaughlin and Jodi Petersen are serving terms on the Board of Governors. McLaughlin is poised to begin her term as newlyelected First Vice President in May 2023. In recent years, Julie Ahrling, Judith Hanses and Rebekah Kingston have also dedicated their time and expertise toward guiding the Board of Governors. Their valuable insight and contributions to the Club significantly and positively impacted the status of the Club today.

Women’s History Month celebrates women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements throughout history. It’s a time to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of the women who came before us and recognize the ongoing efforts to achieve true equality.

Today, after 120 years, the MAC is a thriving community of men and women from diverse backgrounds and interests who come together to socialize, network and participate in a wide range of athletic and cultural activities. The Club’s commitment to promoting fitness and wellness in a welcoming and inclusive environment for all Members remains a cornerstone of its mission. The MAC is opening its vault of treasures to commemorate the Club’s 120th Anniversary, where Members will discover rarely seen original images, artifacts, and storytelling. YOUR MAC MOMENTS SHARED

CK Aces New Role as Tennis Coordinator

Now that Kim Steinmetz has stepped down from her position as the MAC’s Tennis Director, Scott Stutz is taking her place and Carolyn Kramer (CK) is the new Adult Tennis Coordinator. Kramer previously held the Tennis Communication Coordinator role. In her new position, she will manage the MAC Ladies Interclub program and organize many adult tennis offerings at the MAC, including special events, adult matchmaking and clinics.

Kramer has played tennis since she was three years old and moved to St. Louis when she was 10. In high school at St. Joseph’s Academy, Kramer helped the Angels win team State three out of her four years. She also won State in individual doubles her freshman year. She went on to play at Virginia Tech on a full-ride scholarship. She played top 6 singles and number 1 doubles for the Hokies. Kramer specializes in doubles and transferred to Mizzou in her senior year. There, she was part of a doubles tandem that was ranked #30 in the ITA rankings.

The new Adult Tennis Coordinator has coached tennis for over 20 years in multiple locations including The Hamptons. Before joining the coaching staff at the MAC, Kramer coached at Frontenac Racquet Club and Creve Coeur Racquet Club.

“I immediately felt welcomed with open arms since my first day,” Kramer said. “I thrive on the energy and enthusiasm for learning that the Members possess. Every lesson, whether individual and group, as well as every clinic has had eager Members wanting to be the very best tennis players they can be.”

In her new role, Kramer aims to bring all MAC tennis players together.

“I am committed to getting all adult tennis players to know one another,” she said. “We have so many wonderful groups of gals, and my aim is to bring them all together as a true team. I also want to create events for men and women to interact on the tennis court. Whether through Cardio Tennis or mixed doubles events, I would like for the adult Members to feel a true sense of tennis community at the MAC.”

Health Tips from Nutrition Coach Maggie Dickinson

Making changes each day can help you reach your goals, whether it’s to lose weight or eat healthier. Contact Coach Maggie to learn how to balance your day with the right foods and the right portions!

SIMPLE CHANGES TO A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

1. Drink more water: Start your day with hot lemon water and drink at least 80 ounces per day.

2. Eat to lose: Eating the right combination of meals and snacks throughout your day plays a significant role with weight loss and healthy eating.

3. Snack on high-protein, high-fiber foods: When it’s time to snack, make your food work for you. Stay away from highcalorie foods like chips and crackers, and instead go for protein and fiber-rich foods that will fill you up.

4. Move more: Schedule your workouts into your week like an important meeting or appointment you must be at. Track your steps and set goals to reach each day.

5. Don’t drink your calories: Stop drinking soda, juice and limit alcohol –it’s not worth the extra sugar or calories. Stick to 80 ounces of plain water or flavor it with fresh ingredients like cucumber, lemon, ginger or mint.

For more information or to schedule a consultation, contact Coach Maggie at weightlosscoachmd2014@yahoo.com

PICKLEBALL: STAYING IN THE GAME

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the United States with more than 5 million people playing. As the sport grows in popularity, pickleball-related injuries are on the rise as well.

Pickleball injuries can sideline a player for weeks to months at a time. At SSM Health Physical Therapy, our therapists help players return to the court quickly and effectively. We help athletes recover from a variety of injuries, including muscle strains, ligament sprains and fractures.

We also work with athletes who wish to decrease their risk of a future injury, as well as athletes who feel physically restricted in their performance. Whether beginner or advanced, young or old, our goal is to keep players in the game for longer and to play at their highest level.

After an in-depth evaluation and assessment, our therapist will provide an individualized treatment plan that may include:

• Muscle strengthening

• Addressing motor control and body mechanics to refine technique

• Targeted stretches for soft tissue and joint restrictions

• Cardiovascular and endurance training

• Balance, speed and agility work

• Proper warm-up and cool-down to reduce injury

Our specially trained therapists may also provide you with:

• Blood flow restriction

• Footwear recommendations/orthotics

• Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

• Manual therapy techniques

• Dry needling

• Athletic taping

FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT: SSM Health Physical Therapy - MAC West Clubhouse. Call 314.822.3205 or stop by the clinic for assistance scheduling. We look forward to serving the needs of you and your family!

You’re in Good Hands WITH MAC MASSAGE THERAPISTS

The complete wellness team at the Missouri Athletic Club is ready to help you feel your best with four massage therapists on staff.

Jerrad Benton, Jennifer Blaha, Kelly McNally and Teah Sparks keep Members’ aches and pains at bay at the Downtown and West Clubhouses. Members can receive massage services from Blaha and McNally at the West Clubhouse while Sparks works out of the Downtown Clubhouse. Benton can be booked at either location.

Now more than ever massage therapy has gained recognition with allied wellness and healthcare professionals as a safe and effective treatment for improving overall wellness and healing. Whether Members want to optimize their recovery after a workout, improve performance, rehab an injury or simply de-stress so their shoulders don’t touch their ears, the MAC has a treatment that can help.

This is why MAC massage therapists offer an assortment of outcome-based massage treatments including a range of circulatory, connective tissue,

musculoskeletal and specialized techniques. Each treatment option seeks to accomplish a specific outcome and optimize the body’s natural processes. Many of our services complement physical therapy and corrective exercise, helping to prepare the muscles and joints for functional training. Some of these may qualify, with a doctor’s referral, for reimbursement through a Member’s health insurance.

MAC massage services are helpful for Members who are hurting, stiff, or just want to get away for an hour and unwind. With over 70 years of combined experience and hundreds of hours of specialized training, it’s safe to say you’re in good hands.

Visit mac-stl.org/Fitness_Wellness to learn more about how the MAC’s massage services can aid in your health journey.

Massage therapy with Jennifer Blaha has become an essential part of my weekly MAC fitness regimen. While working with personal trainer Chris Lueken he helped me recognize the chronic shoulder and upper back pain I suffered could be remedied. Work and my favorite activity of cycling led to constant muscle tension which I tried to ignore. Chris referred me to Jennifer for massage therapy and it has transformed my work, cycling and sleep. I can better withstand hours on my feet and hours on the bike because Jennifer is there to provide the necessary therapy. This allows me to stay focused on my training and get the pain free sleep and recovery that are essential to improving my fitness. The massage therapy with Jennifer Blaha is now an integral aspect of my ongoing MAC training program.

MICHALAK – TEAH SPARKS’ CLIENT

I’ve suffered from lower back pain for most of my adult life. Several years ago, I started seeing Teah at the Downtown Clubhouse. Wow, she’s a miracle worker – immediate relief! She showed me what was happening in my hips and lower back, worked extensively on that area, and then gave me some exercises to do at home. Teah has given me the ability to remain active. She is a professional through and through, really knows her stuff. I highly recommend Teah to anyone in need of a top-notch massage experience.

GARNER – JERRAD BENTON’S CLIENT

I started going to Jerrad about a year ago amidst training for a full marathon. His knowledge of muscle recovery and deep tissue massage was crucial to my ability to train and perform at my highest potential. I’m still working with Jerrad at the MAC every few weeks to make sure that I’m staying healthy. I have minimal joint pain and more importantly, my muscular recovery is better than ever. Thanks to these massage services, I am strong, confident, and staying in shape. Recovery is key.

MARY ANN BOYD – KELLY MCNALLY’S CLIENT

Kelly McNally is amazing! She is a skilled, versatile therapist who individualizes massages based on each client’s need. I am impressed with her dedication to excellence and commitment to seeking the latest massage techniques. She is a warm and compassionate person who works hard to provide the best massage whether male, female, pregnant, young or old. The MAC is fortunate to have such a dedicated employee.

Walton to Headline College Basketball Awards

Three-time Oscar Robertson Trophy winner delivered the greatest game in NCAA Tournament finals history 50 years ago in St. Louis.

Fifty years ago in St. Louis, Bill Walton delivered what is considered the greatest game in NCAA Tournament finals history when he scored 44 points, making 21 of 22 shot attempts to lead UCLA to the national championship. On April 12, the basketball legend is returning to St. Louis and will be the featured speaker as the Missouri Athletic Club hosts the U.S. Basketball Writers Association College Basketball Awards. The three-time Oscar Robertson Trophy winner is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and is currently one of the most colorful commentators in the game with his coverage on ESPN.

The MAC became home to the College Basketball Awards in 2018. Members have enthusiastically responded as it has quickly become one of the Club’s most popular events. Reservations to this year’s banquet sold out in less than ten minutes.

Some of the biggest names in college basketball have visited the MAC for the banquet, including Trae Young, Rick Barnes, Megan Gustafson, Zion Williamson, Aliyah Boston, Tommy Lloyd, Jabari Smith, and Oscar Tshiebwe. This year’s banquet will recognize the male and female of the year, coach of the year and player of the year. The award winners will be announced in the coming weeks. You can follow all the latest news regarding the banquet and the lineup of honorees at @MACbballawards on Twitter.

Celebrating St. Louis Soccer Legends and CITY SC

Native St. Louisan and former U.S. Men’s National Team Player Taylor Twellman visited the Downtown Clubhouse on Friday, Feb. 17 for the MAC’s Speaker Series event: A Celebration of St. Louis Soccer.

Twellman, a 5x MLS All-Star, got the crowd in the Missouri Room excited for St. Louis CITY SC’s inaugural season. He then welcomed Al Trost, Lori Chalupny, Ty Keough, Brad Davis and Steve Trittschuh to the stage. Twellman addressed each of them and their legendary careers and dove into why St. Louis has been and will remain an incredible soccer hub.

When the St. Louis legends left the stage, CITY SC’s Head Coach Bradley Carnell took their place. Carnell explained that he coaches the person first and then focuses on their skill. He told Twellman that he has been looking forward to the debut of his new team for over a year.

CITY SC will play their first game at CITYPARK on March 4.
