I was on a recent call where brothers expressed their lack of vigor in voting for the general presidential candidates. I will leave that for the General President to handle but I feel it is appropriate to address Mu Lambda’s recent election. Anxiety regrettably follows many elections – and since Alpha Phi Alpha is no different – it is important that brothers create a more inclusive Mu Lambda Chapter by taking the necessary steps to negate harmful attitudes and misconceptions. Some things that can be done to prevent anxiety surrounding the May election – being informed about the elected officers and how they plan to lead; increased brotherly engagement to dispel misinformation and calm fears; and encouraging brothers to share more positive stories of the chapter and how the new administration deserves a fair chance. I have no anxiety about the new leadership. I know Brother John “Tony” Wilson to be a fair, organized, and righteous brother. He is the right man at the right time to lead this chapter in the right direction. I remain a member a Mu Lambda because of him. There was a point not long ago that I was preparing to renounce my membership in Alpha. I do not need to retell the story but to make a long story short, it was Brothers James Wilson and John “Tony” Wilson who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with me. More important, he is everything I am not. Brothers implied they did not like two-hour long chapter meetings – I assure you his meetings will be shorter. You did not like the long presidential addresses – I assure you he will not do a lot of talking. You said I had the chapter doing too much work – I doubt if he will load the calendar. You said I sent too many emails – I assure you he will not send a lot of emails. There is no reason for anxiety, you are getting everything you want. Mu Lambda withstood some ugly years in Alpha. It withstood the infantile supremacy reigned over the chapter and the kissing of the ring of the grand imperial potentate because some wanted IMDP more than they wanted the sanctity of the fraternity. It overcame him trying to bankrupt the chapter. It overcame a prior leader of Mu Lambda declaring to bankrupt the chapter because of his bruised ego. It overcame him giving chapter records to others in an attempt to hurt the chapter. It overcame renegade brothers trying to create their higher level of Alpha. Though your memories are short and we have had some good years, do not let an election divide us. Nothing divides a chapter more than elections and IMDP. You are the key to the success of the chapter – “United we stand, divided we Fail.” We have more important issues facing us. As the United States reopens it is also important to stay safely connected to family and friends during lockdowns. A call or text might brighten someone’s day, so stay in touch with those close to you. It is important that brothers know that they will be cared for and not shunned by their new leadership. Supporting each other and working together to raise awareness of coronavirus prevention, counter myths and calm fears about the disease are vital for getting through this crisis. Congratulations to Brother John “Tony” Wilson and his incoming administration. Fraternally, Brother Eddie Neal, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

I pray that you and your families are safe and at home during these troubling times. This new norm that we are living in is forcing many of us to become confined within our homes. With that said, let us not forget to utilize some of this time to reach out to our brothers to check in on them from time-to-time. Sometimes just a phone call will do the trick. While we are all creating new routines day-to-day, continue to add some type of physical activity followed by a good nutritional meal. I know this has helped me a great deal each and every day while also aiding in the passing of time. Speaking of passing time, I cannot believe it has been a year since I entered into office as vice president. I believe this is proof that keeping busy will definitely make time swiftly pass. There was no secret while serving under our president staying busy would be an understatement, but as a result, much was learned and accomplished. As I prepare to transition over my responsibilities and task to the incoming vice president, I once again would like to say it has been an honor to serve the brothers of Mu Lambda under the leadership of Brother Neal. As I’m sure the new administration will continue to lead Mu Lambda to new heights, I often wonder how many times I will pick up my phone to check if it is still working because of the silence due to a decrease in incoming calls. I can truly say that the opportunity to get to really know brothers while serving in this position has been most rewarding. As I pass the torch to Brother LaRoche, who will no doubt serve the brothers as I have, I once again would like to thank each and every one of you for believing and trusting me to assist with leading our great chapter. Take care and always Onward and Upward! 06 Brother Garrett Miller Vice-President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

MU LAMBDA CHAPTER JUNE 2018 TO JUNE 20201 Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha is an Alumni chapter and was chartered on October 1, 1923,2 in the District of Columbia. Mu Lambda Chapter will be celebrating 97 years on October 1, 2020. Mu Lambda has 356 men on its rolls.3 Most of the members reside in Washington, DC, with several residing in Ward 5. In April 1998, Mu Lambda purchased its headquarters in the Bloomingdale Neighborhood at 2405 First Street, N.W. The house has been a center of social activity, activism, and philanthropy for African Americans for decades. This is the third site that Mu Lambda has maintained as its headquarters. The first was purchased in 1928.4 The second was purchased in 1950 and located at 1800 New Hampshire Avenue, N.W.5 Mu Lambda was one of the first chapters in Alpha to purchase a house.6 Mu Lambda has been an innovator, a builder, and a molder of men, making a difference in the lives of many in the Washington Metropolitan area. Mu Lambda is working diligently to ensure that our programs and social activities continue to impact the community in a positive way by being a catalyst of change. Today, Mu Lambda stands as a beacon of light to the community and a strong source of leadership. Through its Henry Arthur Callis Academy, Mu Lambda continues to facilitate the growth of young males, so they understand that leadership is not a burden but a responsibility. Staying true to Alpha’s core: Mu Lambda successfully implements the fraternity’s National Programs: Go-to-High School Go-to-College,7 A Voteless People is a Hopeless People,8 Project Alpha,9 and Brothers’ Keeper.10 These four programmatic efforts are implemented through “out-of-the-box” formats to ensure that Mu Lambda Chapter is reaching its target audience. serve. • •

MU LAMBDA CHAPTER
We have accomplished a lot in two short years. Mu Lambda is the first chapter in Alpha to have its own app. We revamped the chapter’s and foundation’s websites. The chapter is in a better financial position than it was prior to June 2018. We developed relationships and partnerships during the two years that will realize financial gains for Mu Lambda in years to come. We secured grant money and moreover we are leaving the chapter with a departing gift – we started the process to rename First Street between Bryant and Michigan Avenue as Alpha Phi Alpha Way. Mu Lambda received the 2020 Best of Washington Award in the Philanthropy category,34 was recognized as the 2019 Partner of the Year by the House of Ruth,35 and is also a member of the Bloomingdale Civic Association. When I stood before you in May 2018 seeking the office of president of this illustrious chapter, I stated we would not be talking about the elephant in the room when I leave office. Most of you do not recall the elephant and that is okay. If you can remember only one thing, let it be that from June 2018 to June 2020, Brothers Garrett Miller, Jason Jefferson, Timothy Fitzgerald, Chatman Young, Antonio King, Michael Young, William “Tony” Hawkins, Silas Woods, Jeremy Triplett, Andre Lucas, Kenneth Williams, Charvis Campbell, Sean Perkins, Frank King, Byron Williams, Mark Jones, LeRoy Lowery, Brent Radcliff, George Mc Neal, Mikael LaRoche and I served as your Executive Board and worked hard for you. Message from the House of Ruth Committee Greetings Brothers, Mu Lambda sponsored the meal for the ladies at the House of Ruth on Saturday, May 2, 2020. We practiced social distancing and ordered 52 meals from Olive Garden in Bowie. Brother Eddie Neal and I delivered the order to the front door. The Director of Development for the House of Ruth stated, “It is rare that words fail me --- but your generosity, and that of Mu Lambda, always blows me away. This will be a huge, huge treat. Thank you.” The menu was Lasagna Classico, Chicken Parmigiana, salad, Gnocchi soup, bread sticks, Hostess cupcakes, Klondike bars, coca cola, and water. We also provided the ladies yellow roses and individually wrapped utensils and mints. We provided a secondary meal in the event the ladies were hungry later in the night. We provided Fettuccine Alfredo and Spaghetti with meat sauce. The next meal is Saturday, June 6th to be sponsored by Frank King’s team. Brothers voted for the chapter to sponsor the dinners during the odd months (July 11th, September 5th, and November 7th). Teams of brothers will sponsor the even months (June 6th (Frank King’s team), August 1st (Tony Wilson’s team), October 10th Tim Fitzgerald’s team), and December 6th (Alvin Reave’s team). Message from the Health and Wellness Committee
I Can’t Breathe
We are fathers, sons, spouses, uncles, nephews, grandfathers, cousins, friends. We are Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated united by our aims “manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind”. We are black men. We are black men living in America. We are black men dying in America because of the 400 year painful and deadly schism of racism and the subsequent injustices perpetuated against African Americans in this country.
diseases, particularly as they relate to our individual family histories, as these diseases may have a greater impact on our mortality. We, as African American men, are at greater risk for prostate cancer and have higher complications and mortality from it. According to the Office of Minority Health, a division of Health and Human Services, African Americans are 40% more likely to have hypertension than whites and less likely to have it controlled when compared to whites.
As I compose this article, we are in the midst of radical protests across the the country, protests that began peacefully and now have morphed into more violent demonstrations borne from sentiments of anger, disgust, trauma, and emotional fatigue related to the strangulation and murder of another unarmed black man at the hands, and this time at the knee, of an unchecked law enforcement officer and his associates who passively watched in silence the committal of this heinous crime. Sadly, preliminary autopsy reports suggest that Mr. George Floyd died due to complications of pre-existing health conditions and possibly from illegal substances in his system, suggesting that he was responsible, the one to blame, for his untimely death at the hands of the police.
Brothers, let us take the time to invest in ourselves, protecting our families, as we preserve ourselves, to continue to be as an instrumental part of our family fabric, by knowing our numbers. Let us be cognizant of blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol, as these relate to cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke; prostate specific antigen (PSA) and digital rectal exam (DRE) as this test and exam are needed to evaluate for prostate cancer; and colonoscopy for detection of colorectal cancer.
For the last several months, our lives, our daily routines, our financial security, our mental and physical health and wellbeing have been threatened by “the invisible enemy” of COVID19, the coronavirus. Our country has lead the global pandemic in the number of positive cases as well as mortality, as over 100,000 people to date have succumbed to this incurable disease. A disproportionate number of deaths are attributed to the African American community due to the high prevalence of pre-existing conditions in the black community. The message from the highest governmental officials and leaders of this country has again suggested that they, the deceased, too, were to blame for the health disparities, their preexisting conditions, that lead to their deaths from the coronavirus. The month of June is designated as Men’s Health Month. June 10 - 16, 2020, is Men’s Health Week and Fathers’ Day will be celebrated Sunday, June 21, 2020. June is also National Safety Month. As we wrestle with the plight of racism, social injustices, and health disparities, let us be intentional in having a greater awareness of our own health and risk factors for
Earlier this month, Brothers Samuel Armstrong and Anthony Moore presented a virtual Let’s Talk Health and Wellness series on the subject of mental health. It is imperative that we acknowledge the pain and disability that can be associated with depression, posttraumatic stress, and even moral distress, particularly in light of police brutality on men of color that we are so vividly witnessing and experiencing today. Give yourself permission to allow your mental health to have tantamount importance to that of your physical health. As we move forward in this perilous era of uncertainty and as we strive for social justice, health equity, and financial independence, we must not allow the malicious partisan vitriol to shake us. We are people of talent, intellectual prowess, strength, and resilience. However, in order to continue as the Kings that we are, we must take care of ourselves. Below is a link to the Office of Minority Health; its contents are enlightening and educational. https://www.minorityhealth.hhs.gov Brothers, be blessed and stay safe. First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All. Respectfully, Brother Alvin L. Reaves, III

Where Does Mu Lambda Stand in 2020
Brothers, I apologize for overwhelming you with multiple messages but it is necessary. Too many things need addressing and documenting. At the time of this writing we are dealing with a pandemic; coming off stay at home orders in Maryland, District of Columbia, and Virginia; approximately 1.78 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the United States; approximately 104,000 confirmed coronavirus related deaths; the senseless death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the knee of police officer, Derek Chauvin; the shooting death of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery while jogging in Georgia; riots in Atlanta; riots in Minneapolis; riots in Los Angeles, California; a Caucasian woman, Amy Cooper, calling the police on an African American man, Christian Cooper, in Central Park for asking her to put a leash on her dog; African American journalist arrested while covering the Minnesota riots; burning a police precinct in Minneapolis; Caucasian venture capitalist, Tom Austin, calling the police on African American male tenants alleging they did not belong. I do not condone violence. Fox News reporter Leland Vittert was covering protests in Lafayette Park near the White House when as many as a dozen masked protesters surrounded him and the news crew. “This was the scariest situation I’ve been in since I got chased out of Tahrir Square by a mob, and this was equally scary,” said Vittert. “Imagine what it’s like to be a black man, feeling like this every f###ing day,” a woman in the crowd is seen shouting at the crew as they hurried away. People are sick and tired of being sick and tired of black men being subjected to unnecessary violence and loss of life. I pondered what can Mu Lambda do. I think it is time for Alpha and particularly Mu Lambda to set aside personal agendas, have some grown up conversations, and work towards unity. Does it really matter whether you are young, old, wealthy, live in SE versus NW, went to Harvard versus UDC, when the first thing others see is your race? I have heard countless arguments as to why Alpha is divided but I say to all, the longer you are the divided, the longer African Americans will be gunned down in the street, have knees on their necks, and life choked out of our bodies. Why is it that college educated African American men in 2020 still assemble within their groups and orchestrate foolish protests against one another? Chapters in Alpha spewing negative rhetoric about another chapter. Brothers buying into the rhetoric because it fits their faction. If you fit into the aforementioned category, are you not as detrimental to the African American race in some ways as the other racists who are not of your same pigmentation? Fraternally, Brother Eddie Neal President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

FRAT FUN PART 2 THE BROTHERS OF MU LAMBDA CHAPTER When I first joined Mu Lambda chapter, the very Reverend Brother Brown, a great man of the cloth, was President and if my recollections serves me well, it certainly took a great lot of cloth to cover his girth! True to his ecclesiastical bent, he welcomed me to the chapter, was supportive and did his best to make me feel at home. We had many congenial conversations and over time he shared that he had been branded while on line. He told me how the brothers had smacked his chest repeatedly and with a super-heated coat hanger, burned an “A” into the left side of his chest. According to him, the “A” was about two inches in height when administered. He opened his shirt to show it to me and we both laughed because of his subsequent corpulence and the attendant dermatological distension that he had acquired, the “A” was now about ten inches in height and traversed his entire left side! These early chapter meetings were worthy of note. Many of the distinguished brothers arrived about an hour prior to the scheduled meeting time, to participate in the social hour. Most of them had, ensconced within the deep folds of their outer garments, pint sized flat flasks, filled with their preferred alcoholic concoction. Some of these flasks were entirely of metal, sized and shaped to fit into a jacket pocket and often personalized with their initials engraved upon them, as benefited men of their stature. As they communed and consumed prior to the call to order, they imbibed these beverages copiously while discussing the issues of the day, week or month and quite often when the presiding officer tried to call the meeting to order that was what he literally had to do. The tower of Babel had no advantages upon these gentlemen since most, if not all of them, cared little for the tender ministrations of the grape but opted for the more intense and vitriolic enhancement of alcohol distillates. Some even jokingly bragged that their libations had been distilled and bottled within the last twenty four hours, aging be damned! As my stock improved among these brothers, I was occasionally summoned to their tables and allowed to share in a splash or two from the aforementioned flasks. I learned quite quickly that while I was an occasional visitor to the shrine of Bacchus, I was

no match for those venerable doyens who virtually worshiped there! These men were not run of the mill, they were a cut above the rest, the Bailey’s Irish crème de la crème so to speak, bibbers to be reckoned with! One of my first shared “splashes” set me back a few years. Cognizant of my Caribbean roots as a native of Barbados and card carrying West Indian rum drinking man conversant with the vagaries of and the lethal toxicity of Jamaica’s Wray and Nephew white rum, I quaffed the proffered libation without thought. That was my first mistake! A flash of liquid fire traversed my lips, searing its way through my mouth to create spontaneous conflagration. I felt that I had been struck by lightning! In hindsight, it occurs to me that such a thought might have been correct as the lightning may have been of the “white” assortment! It engulfed my entire oral cavity! Flames shot from my nostrils! To protect my nasal sinuses, I stopped breathing and to save my tongue, I swallowed rapidly. Mistake number two! The scorching lava swept past my virgin and now liquefying tonsils, immolating them on its way down through my esophagus, finally coming to rest in my unwitting stomach. My internal thoracic cavity was ablaze! I believe now that “come to rest,” is a contradiction in terms, because my next memory was of a facsimile of the cloud that arose over the city of Hiroshima after the dropping of the atomic bomb. On reaching the gastric portion of my stomach, it exploded, spuming its way upwards through my already tortured esophagus to once again assail my oral cavity and envelop my entire person! Dazed, I rocked back on my heels as my breath was wrenched from my body. I hadn’t even realized that I had stopped breathing! I then gasped to vent my alimentary canal of the toxic build-up of incendiary fumes that had coalesced within me! Beads of sweat appeared upon my brow, my mind became befogged, my vision dimmed, I temporarily lost my hearing and I was simultaneously rendered speechless! I struggled mightily to contract my anal sphincters to avoid embarrassment and to hang on to my kidney function although I cannot be entirely certain that a few drops of ureic effluviate did not escape of their own volition! I learned two things that day. One, there was a vast difference between an occasional visitor to the hallowed halls of the shrine of Bacchus and those epicureans who dwelt constantly therein and two, any liquid blessing offered by these same gentlemen had to be severely diluted before any attempt at normal human consumption was executed! As the senior brother who had shared his libation continued to engage in proliferate oratory, I could only sit back and nod my head, as speech was still rendered impossible! I believe that he took this as a sign of my agreement with his tenets which probably added to the Continued on the next page

FRAT FUN PART 2 continued rise in my stock! When I had partially recovered, I had to be shown to my seat by a kindly senior brother who had observed my condition as I had no idea where it was! I wonder now if somehow the incident had been arranged as a rite of passage! After I had regained a modicum of coherence, I surreptitiously checked my person for defective mal-odors and ureic effluvia. To my relief I had survived the ordeal intact! When Brother Leroy Lowery first took the chapter gavel for the first of many such forays, he was so concerned with the amount of fraternal inebriation amongst these august brethren that he wondered if this indeed were not a new virus, possibly a Vat19! Lowery, at this time, in his great naivete and not fully comprehending the import of the social hour, mandated to the brotherhood that no liquor be drunk during the meeting. Like Trump, he had no clue as to the repercussions of such an edict! What this now meant was that the liquor that had been previously consumed throughout the entire meeting, a period of about two hours, now had to entirely ingested in the social hour, since there was no intent of any of these brothers to return home with anything less than an arid and empty container. Lowery soon discovered that much of the rapt attention from these miscreants that brought a smile to his face which he thought was as a result of his pronouncements and subsequent scintillating discourse, was no more than glassy eyed paralysis concordant with abundant alcoholic stupor! Not only were they oblivious to his ardent entreaties but worse yet he came to realize that they were not in a condition to even care and had no recurrent knowledge of his perorations! Reclining contentiously in the weeds was Brother Wayland McClellan, attorney at law, a very vocal and passionate member of the chapter. Like the most revered Brother C.C House, he had a leonine countenance; a full head of long, striking white hair, with mustache to match, more Caucasoid in feature than the African wooly cranial covering with which I am endowed. I observed that as meetings progressed he would get more and more lugubrious and lachrymose in his utterances and his visage would become more cherubic and flushed. This phenomenon, I discerned, after much investigation, had to do with President Lowery’s edict. Brother Wayland apparently took umbrage with Lowery’s insistence that no liquor should be consumed during the meetings so he therefore adroitly and studiously avoided being in open opposition to his chapter President by presenting at the meetings with a jumbo sized slurpee cup loaded with liquor, which was now twice the size of the original offending flasks! Gently sipping on a straw, he
continuously consumed his “soda” during the meeting. The situation now was that instead of McClellan only imbibing a pint of his favorite elixir, he was now guzzling an entire quart! Half way through the meeting his cerebrum would become profoundly inundated with the oaken flavored spirits and the meningeal fluids that were supposed to bathe his corpus callosum to prevent dessication, became replaced by fermented alcohol. This served to liberate his glossopharyngeal musculature, setting free a propensity to garrulous extemporaneity, and precipitously casting him several veritable sheets into the wind! His voice would increase in tenor, his face in torpor, and his words would became garbled and intelligible, sometimes sounding as if he were strangling. His visage, normally somewhat florid became crimson and as one with a frigid version of Santa Clause’s backside! On occasion he would become so overwrought that he would dissolve into tears and sob as he impassionedly described some Inconsequential incident or other. Needless to say, President Lowery made no more pronouncements which referred to alcohol intake after that! Subsequently Brother McClellan departed these earthly climes which, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on one’s perspective, restored some semblance of calamity and general sobriety to chapter meetings, albeit far less entertaining. His final terrestrial farewell, however, was replete with its own drama. Brother McClellan’s wife was a lovely lady, as dusky in hue as he was florid. She had preceded him across the River Jordan on that final trek that we all one day must make. On second thought, there are some of us who may never see the River Jordan but may be directed to the River Styx, conduit to Hades, a venue quite different from the pearly gates! On subsequent rumination also, I believe that her quiet and dignified preceding departure may have contributed somewhat to his unfettered ingress and subsequent lay wasting of the fortifying spirits. Brother Mac loved his lady dearly and I could sense his feelings of deep sorrow and loss after she had departed. Ultimately he too took that same journey, although I think, in a far more corporally preserved condition than she was. Embalming him may have been overkill and an exercise in futility! The day of his Omega service, held at an Anglican church on Piney Branch Ave, was one befitting his need. It was clear, crisp and refreshing. His devoted spouse must have intervened with the Father Almighty to decrease his alcoholic haze so that he could ultimately find his way to her. The woman was a saint! I believe that Brother Lowery may have been the presiding chapter president at the time but Continued on the next page

FRAT FUN PART 2 continued my recollection is somewhat shrouded on that issue. However, as usual, brothers were chosen to read the requisite parts of the Omega service as is commonly done. The brother chosen to read the Litany of the dead, which is the part of the service necessitating a call and response from the brothers, was a tall, thin, narrow faced, softly spoken, slightly balding individual who always reminded me of a mortician or a hangman in the old westerns. All he needed was a black top hat. I cannot recall his name but I do, however, remember the pained expression that perennially covered his pinched face as if his dogs were always on fire and his hemorrhoids were pulsing in unison! His raspy voice reminded me of Victor Borga’s! As the service was held reasonably early in the morning, I do not believe, although, I may be in error, that he had already succumbed to the seduction of the spirits delivered from the oaken barrel. I choose to believe that he had forgotten his spectacles at home, or at last that morning had a vision problem, for the words that he read, to which the brothers had to respond, made it quite clear that he either could not read or see, or both. Fortunately the majority of the congregation was quite elderly and probably could not hear very well and so missed the faux pas that he cavalierly doled out, mercilessly delineating a pugnacious juxtaposition between call and response! He would say something like, “On the third day he arose from the dead,” to which we had to respond “...and grant us thy blessing!” Needless to say after a few of his pronouncements, our responses ebbed to a few vague mutterings as we could not utter cogent replies. To top it off, Brother Hunnigan conducted the Alpha and Omega chapter hymns! As Jesus did, I wept, for nothing more cruel has ever been foisted upon humanity! It was in this environment that my dear friend and our delightful brother McClellan was laid to rest. Brother Kenneth Holbert, attorney-at-law, is from Texas, if you please, and if you did not previously know it, he will make sure that you know it in the opening salvo of any discussion in which you and he are involved. Though diminutive in stature, his mind is as expansive as the universe. No subject in the world is beyond his ken nor far from or cannot be related to Texas. He will sinuously and cogently weave it in no matter the genesis of the conversation. Brief discourse is not in his compendium and his every pronouncements are delivered with the theatrical elan and panache of Mark Anthony, eulogist to Julius Caesar! When he speaks, like E.F. Hutton in the television commercial, you have to stop and listen! Impeccably attired at all times, mustache neatly outlined upon his upper lip, every hair, though few now remain, slicked to his balding pate, nattily accoutered
in a three piece suit with shoes gleaming a la dog stones on a moon-lit night, he often holds court. His suave and debonair manner is so engaging that even now, fully invested into his ninth decade, he attracts denizens of the fairer sex, in numbers akin to his annual existence. Unencumbered by matrimonial restraints, he continues to engage as an agent provocateur to a bevy of comely sisters of Nefertiti. Conversations with him become a tutorial in law, philosophy and social constructs laced with effusive oratory. His vast knowledge of housing as it relates to governmental involvement is encyclopedic and his wry grins as he postulates on anything, are a joy to behold. He is indeed a beloved human being, and I wish that he would live another hundred years! Brother Horace Dawson, another nonagenarian and diminutive giant, fraternally and universally, is another of Mu Lambda’s most beloved icons. Professionally, he was a diplomat having served the US in posts in Africa. He is revered not only among his fraternal brothers but among his diplomatic colleagues as well. His contributions to his fraternity, Washington, DC and the world are myriad. While not as effusive as Brother Holbert, his mild manner masks a massive intellect and an unfettered admiration for the daughters of the earth! He has been known to share a great story from time to time and like Brother Holbert, he too, loosed from the bonds of matrimony following the demise of his spouse, and likewise in his ninth decade, has eschewed renewing such bonds for the greater pleasure of sharing his bounty! His self-effacing manner is not without cost as some of his opponents have discovered, for he is quick of wit and glib of tongue. I wonder if that is why….. no I won’t even voice such a thought! As a result of his advanced age, I suspect that in these his extended years, his cocktails are liberally laced with derivatives of sildenafil citrate and that both he and Brother Hobart have somehow have elevated their glossal skills, honing them to a fine art in areas more than simple elocution! He, too, is still quite incisive in mind and intellect and serves as a beacon for all who would aspire to greatness! I wish him also another century of convivial existence for he is one of my favorite people upon this earth! I end this segment with the disclosure that for most is not necessary but for the unwitting few, I have a deep and abiding filial love for these aforementioned brothers and none of the prior observations should even remotely be considered anything but laudatory as they all have erected stellar sign posts along the way as we all engage in our terrestrial peregrination. More to come! Brother Ryle Bell

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.
My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

Alpha
is a life long commitment
An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit. JUNE 2020 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 52
